Abstract:In situ chemical oxidations are known to remediate PAH contaminations in groundwater and soils. In this study, batch-scale oxidations aim to compare the PAC (polycyclic aromatic compound) degradation of three oxidation processes traditionally applied for soil treatment: permanganate, heat-activated persulfate (60 °C) and Fenton-like activated by magnetite, to results obtained with ferrates (FeVI). Widely studied for water treatments, ferrates are efficient on a wide range of pollutants with the advantage of producing nontoxic ferric sludge after reaction. However, fewer works focus on their action on soil, especially on semi-industrial grade ferrates (compatible with field application). Oxidations were carried out on sand spiked with dense non-aqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) sampled in the groundwater of a former coking plant. Conventional 16 US-EPA PAHs and polar PACs were monitored, especially potential oxygenated by-products that can be more harmful than parent-PAHs. After seven reaction days, only the Fenton-like showed limited degradation. Highest efficiencies were obtained for heat-activated persulfate with no O-PAC ketones formed. Permanganate gave important degradation, but ketones were generated in large amount. The tested ferrates not only gave slightly lower yields due to their auto-decomposition but also induced O-PAC ketone production, suggesting a reactional pathway dominated by oxidoreductive electron transfer, rather than a radical one.

Abstract:Advanced electrochemical oxidation methods have demonstrated significant potential in degrading per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). However, the widespread application of these techniques is impeded by the long term performance and the limited service life of electrodes. This study introduces a novel approach by investigating the impact of polarity reversal (PR) of the applied current on the electrochemical degradation of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonate (6:2 F TS), and aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) samples. A laboratory-scale electrochemical cell equipped with two titanium sub-oxide (Ti4O7) electrodes is used for the experimental investigation. The results indicate 6-h direct current (DC) operation causes fouling and ageing of the electrode (anode) such as the formation of titanium oxide (TiO2). The application of PR effectively mitigates fouling and aging, leading to an enhanced mass transfer and an improved long-term defluorination of PFOA, PFOS, 6:2 FTS, and AFFF samples. The investigation also suggests that PR can help to reduce the energy consumption by similar to 13%. Overall, the application of PR emerges as a promising and practical strategy to augment the electrochemical degradation of PFAS, addressing critical issues related to electrode stability and longevity.
DNAPL remediation with in situ chemical oxidation using potassium permanganate. Part I. Mineralogy of Mn oxide and its dissolution in organic acids

Abstract:Previous studies on in situ chemical oxidation of trichloroethylene (TCE) with potassium permanganate indicated that the solid reaction product, Mn oxide, could reduce the permeability of the porous medium and impact the success of dense non-aqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) removal. In order to address the issue of permeability reduction caused by precipitation, this study investigated the mineralogy of Mn oxides and the possibilities of removing the solid precipitates by dissolution. The solid reaction product from the oxidation of TCE by permanganate is semi-amorphous potassium-rich birnessite, which has a layered mineral structure with an interlayer spacing of 7.3 A. The chemical formula is K(0.854)Mn(1.786)O(4).1.55H(2)O. It has a relatively small specific surface area at 23.6+/-0.82 m(2)/g. Its point of zero charge (pzc) was measured as 3.7+/-0.4. This birnessite is a relatively active species and could participate in various reactions with existing organic and inorganic matter. The dissolution kinetics of Mn oxide was evaluated in batch experiments using solutions of citric acid, oxalic acid, and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA). Initial dissolution rates were determined to be 0.126 mM/m(2)/h for citric acid, 1.35 mM/m(2)/h for oxalic acid, and 5.176 mM/m(2)/h for EDTA. These rates compare with 0.0025 mM/m(2)/h for nitric acid at pH=2. Organic acids dissolve Mn oxide quickly. Reaction rates increase with acid concentration, as tested with citric acid. The dissolution mechanism likely involves proton and ligand-promoted dissolution and reductive dissolution. Citric and oxalic acid can induce ligand-promoted dissolution, while EDTA can induce ligand-promoted and reductive dissolutions. At low pH, proton-promoted dissolution seems to occur with all the acids tested, but this process is not dominant. Reductive dissolution appears to be the most effective process in dissolving the solid, followed by ligand-promoted dissolution. These experiments indicate the significant potential in using these organic acids to remove precipitates formed during the oxidation reaction.
Oxidative degradation of pentachlorophenol by permanganate for ISCO application

Abstract:Potassium permanganate (KMnO4) has been an effective technology for the in situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) of many organic compounds including chlorinated alkanes and alkenes, but it has rarely been applied for oxidizing aromatic organochlorines. This study confirms the ability of permanganate to oxidize an aromatic chlorinated compound, pentachlorophenol (PCP), in an efficient manner at neutral pH. The rate of the reaction between KMnO4 and PCP was calculated and the results indicated that the reaction between PCP and permanganate is relatively fast with a second-order rate constant k″ ∼ 30 M-1 s-1. Besides the kinetic aspect, the authors identified the main reaction by-products, and proposed a possible reaction mechanism scheme. The general pathway shows the formation of chlorinated intermediates, and ultimately, the complete mineralization to chloride, water, and CO2 confirmed by total organic carbon and chloride measurement in solution. Flow-through column experiments, consisting of flushing a PCP-contaminated sandy or natural soil with oxidant, showed the good ability of permanganate to eliminate the pollutant. After 24 h of treatment, 77% and 56% of PCP abatement were obtained for sandy and natural soil, respectively. These findings show the high potential of permanganate for the in situ remediation of aromatic organochlorine contaminated soils.

Abstract:The stable and resistant nature of petroleum, recognized as a primary environmental pollutant, poses significant risks to soil and ecosystems. Recent attention has shifted towards remediating petroleum-contaminated soil through oxidation, utilizing agents like potassium permanganate or sodium persulfate. This study addresses the drawbacks of chemical oxidation methods, known for high agent consumption and potential secondary pollution. Focusing on the combined oxidation of petroleum-contaminated soil with potassium permanganate and sodium persulfate, the research employs a systematic approach. Single-factor experiments assessed the individual impacts of each agent, while Response Surface Methodology experiments optimized conditions for sodium persulfate oxidation. Orthogonal experiments determined the optimal combination of persulfate types, initial pH, and agent ratios for combined oxidation, including the most effective agent application sequence. Using n-hexadecane and naphthalene as model pollutants, the study investigated the chemical oxidation mechanisms. Ecological toxicity of oxidation byproducts is evaluated with the Toxicity Estimation Software Tool (TEST). Results revealed that, at a 2.0 mol/kg dosage and a 5 mL/g water and soil ratio, potassium permanganate and sodium persulfate oxidation effectively remove surface and underground petroleum pollutants within 8 h. Sodium persulfate oxidation was significantly influenced by reaction time, with the dosage and water-to-soil ratio interaction having the strongest impact. Under optimized conditions (5 mL/g water and soil ratio, total dosage of 2.0 mol/kg, 1:1 agent ratio, simultaneous addition of both agents, initial pH of 4, and an 8-h reaction), the combined oxidation process achieved a removal efficiency of 82.90%. The study identified chemical transformations in n-hexadecane and naphthalene oxidation. However, the ecological toxicity of partially oxidized byproducts increased. In conclusion, the combined oxidation of potassium permanganate and sodium persulfate emerges as an efficient method for remediating petroleum-contaminated soil, overcoming limitations associated with traditional chemical oxidation approaches.

Abstract:As one of the remediation reagents, potassium permanganate (KMnO4) is injected to the aquifer, degrading trichloroethylene (TCE) by chemical oxidation. This study investigated the kinetics of TCE degradation by series of batch experiments, as well as the influence of medium size. Moreover, phase-transfer catalyst (PTCs), such as pentyltriphenylphosphonium bromide (PTPP) and sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP) were used for enhancing oxidation. The batch experimental results showed that in the absence of PTC, the removal efficiency of TCE was 36.14% and 86.79% within 4 and 30 min, respectively. However, the removal rate of TCE was up to 67.48% and 49.90% within 4 min for 15 mol% PTPP- and SHMP-added system, respectively. The results indicated that PTPP and SHMP promoted the depletion of MnO4− to oxidize DNAPL TCE, but its effectiveness varied with the addition ratio of PTPP or SHMP. Its promotion was more remarkable when PTC added with a higher proportion. The alleviation of MnO2 by phosphates (PO43−, HPO42− and H2PO4−) or PTC in the presence of media was qualitatively investigated. Results showed that the content of MnO2 in the dissolved phase during the same reaction period decreased by PTC. Moreover, HPO42− and SHMP have apparent beneficial effects of reducing MnO2 formation. The presence of aquifer media has a pH buffer and a negative influence on the reaction between TCE and the oxidant; moreover, as particle size of media decreased, the negative effect increased.

Abstract:Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a class of toxic organic pollutants commonly detected in the aqueous phase. Traditional biodegradation is inefficient and advanced oxidation technologies are expensive. In the current study, a novel strategy was developed using calcium peroxide (CP) and PAH-degrading bacteria (PDB) to effectively augment PAH degradation by 28.62-59.22%. The PDB consisted of the genera Acinetobacter, Stenotrophomonas, and Comamonas. Applying the response surface model (RSM), the most appropriate parameters were identified, and the predictive degradation rates of phenanthrene (Phe), pyrene (Pyr), and ΣPAHs were 98%, 76%, and 84%, respectively. The constructed mixed system could reduce 90% of Phe and more than 60% of ΣPAHs and will perform better at pH 5-7 and lower salinity. Because PAHs tend to bind to dissolved organic matter (DOM) with larger molecular weights, humic acid (HA) had a larger negative effect on the PAH-degradation efficiency of the CP-PDB mixed system than fulvic acid (FA). The proposed PAH-degradation pathways in the mixed system were based on the detection of intermediates at different times. The investigation constructed and optimized a novel environmental PAH-degradation strategy. The synergistic application of PDB and oxidation was extended for organic contaminant degradation in aqueous environments.

Abstract:Permanganate-based ISCO (in situ chemical oxidation) has been commonly utilized to remediate chlorinated ethenes DNAPLs (dense non-aqueous phase liquids), but the treatment is seriously hindered by the formation of MnO2 rinds that encapsulate DNAPLs. We report herein a proactive approach to the MnO2 problem by chelating and stabilizing the Mn(III) species formed in situ, the precursors of MnO2. To identify suitable chelators for chelator-enhanced permanganate-based ISCO, chemical compatibility of sixteen representative commercial organic and inorganic chelators with permanganate was first investigated. Organic chelators generally induced rapid consumption of permanganate and concurrent severe MnO2 precipitation, when mixed with permanganate. In contrast, polyphosphate-based inorganic chelators showed high compatibility due to the redox-inert nature of the chelators. Among all chelators tested, only pyrophosphoric acid (PPA) could effectively stabilize the Mn(III) species and mitigate the generation and precipitation of MnO2, when permanganate was exposed to trichloroethene (TCE, a representative of chlorinated ethenes) liquid. Further studies showed that mitigation of MnO2 precipitation by PPA significantly improved permanganate oxidation of TCE DNAPL in the water/DNAPL biphasic system and in the sand column. Overall, the study indicates the potential of chelator-enhanced permanganate-based ISCO for the remediation of chlorinated ethenes DNAPLs.

Stable Incorporation of MnOx Quantum Dots into N-doped Hollow Carbon: A Synergistic Peroxymonosulfate Activator for Enhanced Removal of Bisphenol A

Abstract:Manganese oxide (MnO)x with earth-abundance and low toxicity have received considerable interest for advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) but suffer from poor catalytic activity and stability. Herein, a unique hybrid hollow structure with ultrasmall size MnOx quantum dots (QDs, 3 nm) homogeneously dispersed on N-doped porous carbon shells (denoted as MnOx/N-HPCS) was designed as heterogeneous Fenton-like catalyst. The ultrafine nanoscaling morphology of MnOx QDs enlarges its specific surface area (227.9 m(2)/g) for providing more active sites. The N-doped carbon (NC) shells can not only greatly improve the conductivity of the hybrid and effectively prevent the aggregation of MnOx QDs, but serve as metal-free active sites for Fenton-like reaction. While the hollow porous structure enables the fast transportation of reactants access to the full-exposure active sites. When evaluated as catalyst for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation, the MnOx/N-HPCS hybrid outperformed other benchmark catalysts toward the removal of bisphenol A (BPA) with highest removal rate of 0.29 min(-1). Results showed that exceed 99% of BPA (10 mg L-1) was removed within 20 min at the dosage of 0.2 g L-1 PMS and 0.06 g L-1 MnOx/N-HPCS. Moreover, the mechanism of PMS activation by MnOx/N-HPCS was studied. The mixed valence states of Mn, the hydroxyl species induced complexation of equivalent to Mn((3+/4+))-PMS and the metal-free N-doped sites synergistically enhancing the generation of reactive oxygen species ((OH)-O-. and SO4.-). Furthermore, the MnOx/N-HPCS catalyst also displayed good reusability (successive 4 runs) with negligible Mn leaching (less than 2 mu g L-1). Together with the investigation of the application in real environment water samples (such as tap water and wastewater), we demonstrated this novel Mn-based AOPs catalyst with unique structure and high activity will hold great potential in environmental remediation.
Degradation of petroleum hydrocarbons in unsaturated soil and effects on subsequent biodegradation by potassium permanganate

Abstract:To date, the oxidation of petroleum hydrocarbons using permanganate has been investigated rarely. Only a few studies on the remediation of unsaturated soil using permanganate can be found in the literature. This is, to the best of our knowledge, the first study conducted using permanganate pretreatment to degrade petroleum hydrocarbons in unsaturated soil in combination with subsequent bioaugmentation. The pretreatment of diesel-contaminated unsaturated soil with 0.5-pore-volume (5%) potassium permanganate (PP) by solution pouring and foam spraying (with a surfactant) achieved the total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) removal efficiencies of 37% and 72.1%, respectively. The PP foam, when coupled with bioaugmentation foam, further degraded the TPH to a final concentration of 438 mg/kg (92.1% total reduction). The experiment was conducted without soil mixing or disturbance. The relatively high TPH removal efficiency achieved by the PP–bioaugmentation serial foam application may be attributed to an increase in soil pH caused by the PP and effective infiltration of the remediation agent by foaming. The applied PP foam increased the pH of the acidic soil, thus enhancing microbial activity. The first-order biodegradation rate after PP oxidation was calculated to be 0.068 d−1. Furthermore, 94% of the group of relatively persistent hydrocarbons (C18–C22) was removed by PP–bioaugmentation, as verified by chromatogram peaks. Some physicochemical parameters related to contaminant removal efficiency were also evaluated. The results reveal that PP can degrade soil TPH and significantly enhance the biodegradation rate in unsaturated diesel-contaminated soil when combined with bioaugmentation foam.

Biogeochemical gradients above a coal tar DNAPL

Abstract:Naturally occurring distribution and attenuation processes can keep hydrocarbon emissions from dense non aqueous phase liquids (DNAPL) into the adjacent groundwater at a minimum. In a historically coal tar DNAPL-impacted site, the de facto absence of a plume sparked investigations regarding the character of natural attenuation and DNAPL resolubilization processes at the site. Steep vertical gradients of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, microbial community composition, secondary water quality and redox-parameters were found to occur between the DNAPL-proximal and shallow waters. While methanogenic and mixed-electron acceptor conditions prevailed close to the DNAPL, aerobic conditions and very low dissolved contaminant concentrations were identified in three meters vertical distance from the phase. Comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC×GC-MS) proved to be an efficient tool to characterize the behavior of the present complex contaminant mixture. Medium to low bioavailability of ferric iron and manganese oxides of aquifer samples was detected via incubation with Shewanella alga and evidence for iron and manganese reduction was collected. In contrast, 16S rDNA phylogenetic analysis revealed the absence of common iron reducing bacteria. Aerobic hydrocarbon degraders were abundant in shallow horizons, while nitrate reducers were dominating in deeper aquifer regions, in addition to a low relative abundance of methanogenic archaea. Partial Least Squares - Canonical Correspondence Analysis (PLS-CCA) suggested that nitrate and oxygen concentrations had the greatest impact on aquifer community structure in on- and offsite wells, which had a similarly high biodiversity (H' and Chao1). Overall, slow hydrocarbon dissolution from the DNAPL appears to dominate natural attenuation processes. This site may serve as a model for developing legal and technical strategies for the treatment of DNAPL-impacted sites where contaminant plumes are absent or shrinking.
Effect of various chemical oxidation reagents on soil indigenous microbial diversity in remediation of soil contaminated by PAHs

Abstract:Chemical oxidation is a promising pretreatment step coupled with bioremediation for removal of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The effectiveness of Fenton, modified Fenton, potassium permanganate and activated persulfate oxidation treatments on the real contaminated soils collected from a coal gas plant (263.6 ± 73.3 mg kg-1 of the Σ16 PAHs) and a coking plant (385.2 ± 39.6 mg kg-1 of the Σ16 PAHs) were evaluated. Microbial analyses showed only a slight impact on indigenous microbial diversity by Fenton treatment, but showed the inhibition of microbial diversity and delayed population recovery by potassium permanganate reagent. After potassium permanganate treatment, the microorganism mainly existed in the soil was Pseudomonas or Pseudomonadaceae. The results showed that total organic carbon (TOC) content in soil was significantly increased by adding modified Fenton reagent (1.4%-2.3%), while decreased by adding potassium permanganate (0.2%-1%), owing to the nonspecific and different oxidative properties of chemical oxidant. The results also demonstrated that the removal efficiency of total PAHs was ordered: permanganate (90.0%-92.4%) > activated persulfate (81.5%-86.54%) > modified Fenton (81.5%-85.4%) > Fenton (54.1%-60.0%). Furthermore, the PAHs removal efficiency was slightly increased on the 7th day after Fenton and modified Fenton treatments, about 14.6%, and 14.4% respectively, and the PAHs removal efficiency only enhanced 4.1% and 1.3% respectively from 1st to 15th day after potassium permanganate and activated persulfate treatments. The oxidants greatly affect the growth of soil indigenous microbes, which cause further influence for PAHs degradation by bioremediation.
In-situ activation of persulfate by emplaced magnetite nanoparticles for degradation of 1,2-dichloroethane in porous media

Abstract:In this study, column experiments were conducted to explore on the method of emplacement of magnetite nanoparticles (MNPs) for in situ activation of persulfate (PS) in sand porous media to degrade 1,2-dichloroethane (DCA), a typical recalcitrant chlorinated compound. Different molar ratios between PS and DCA (0:1, 2:1, 5:1 and 20:1) and mass contents of MNPs in the sand (0 %, 1.9 % and 5.4 %) were tested. In the absence of MNPs, degradation of DCA was negligible for a hydraulic retention time of 7 h. Presence of MNPs at the content of 1.9 % enhanced degradation of DCA and the highest removal efficiency (34.2 %) was observed at the PS-to-DCA molar ratio of 5:1. At the MNPs content of 5.4 %, increase of the PS-to-DCA molar ratio from 2:1 to 20:1 lead to not only increase in DCA removal efficiency but also substantial enhancement in chloride production, indicating that high PS concentration could cause significant degradation of the Cl-containing intermediates. In contrast to MNPs, Fe 3 O 4 solids with much larger size (∼1 μm) were much less effective in activating PS for DCA removal even at a significantly higher content in the medium. The transport data could be well fitted by the one-site chemical nonequilibrium model, which showed kinetic DCA sorption to the MNPs as a key process for the transport. In the long-term injection experiment, a stable and significant removal of DCA (∼50 %) was observed for 254 days at the MNP content of 1.9 %. The results of this study show the potential of MNPs as a sustainable PS activator in injection-based in situ chemical oxidation for groundwater remediation.

In-situ targeted removal of naphthalene from groundwater by peroxymonosulfate activation using molecularly imprinted activated carbon: Efficacy, mechanism and applicability

Abstract:Efficient removal of low-concentration refractory polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) pollutants is crucial for ensuring groundwater safety. In this study, surface molecularly imprinted catalyst (MIP@AC) was developed based on activated carbon (AC) and molecular imprinting technology, and then MIP@AC was introduced into the simulated permeable reaction barrier to evaluate the performance of MIP@AC activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) in in-situ targeted remediation of naphthalene (NAP) contaminated groundwater. The results showed that the relative adsorption selectivity coefficient and relative degradation selectivity coefficient of the MIP@AC material relative to the non-imprinted material AC was as high as 31.47 and 10.88, respectively; that is, MIP@AC can better resist the interference of competitive pollutants and achieve efficient targeted removal of NAP. Additionally, the reactive oxygen species (ROS) yield was higher in the MIP@AC/PMS system compared to the AC/PMS system. The target pollutant NAP was precisely enriched in the imprinted cavity of the MIP@AC, realizing that ROS production and pollutant degradation occurred simultaneously in the MIP@AC imprinted cavity. Therefore, the spatial confinement effect of the imprinted cavity shortened the mass transfer distance between the ROS and NAP, thereby reducing the loss of ROS due to self-quenching. Besides, Cl - significantly promoted the targeted removal of NAP, while HCO 3 - had a slight inhibitory effect; humic acid had no effect because of its larger molecular structure, which does not fit into the small imprinted cavities preferred by NAP. Importantly, the MIP@AC/PMS system demonstrated effective anti-complex matrix interference ability and targeted removal performance for NAP under natural groundwater conditions. This study can promote further research on the surface molecularly imprinted catalyst/PMS system as a new strategy for in-situ targeted remediation technology of contaminated groundwater.

Towards Safety Analysis of Highly Integrated Technologically Heterogeneous Systems – A Domain-Based Approach for Modelling System Failure Logic

Abstract:This position paper from the Airbus Dependability Network (a strategic research partnership between Airbus and three leading European research institutions in the field of system safety) outlines an approach to modelling and safety analysis of technologically heterogeneous systems. The approach builds upon the idea of modelling failure propagation and transformation in a system. These failure behaviour models are extended by introducing a notion of modularity with respect to underlying technology (“domains”). This allows flexibility in the modelling and assessment of individual, technologically homogeneous components (“domain-specific failure logic models” – DSFMs) whilst providing a structure that facilitates the integration of these component models to represent complete system behaviour. The approach also facilitates incremental analysis of the system, whereby DSFMs can be subjected to analysis, such as Fault Tree Analysis, first individually, and then in combination as composition of models progresses. The paper concludes with an outline of the work necessary for implementing the approach as a practicable safety assessment methodology and a discussion of how the methodology can be utilised throughout the development process to maximise the added value.

Abstract:Abstract Fenton’s reaction-based chemical oxidation is in principle a method that can be utilized for all organic fuel residues thus making it a potential all-purpose, multi-contaminant, in situ application for cases in which storage and distribution of different types of fuels have resulted in contamination of soil or groundwater. Since peroxide breakdown reactions are also expected to lead to a physical transport of the target compound, this secondary physical removal, or rebound concentrations related to it, is prone to be affected by the chemical properties of the target compound. Also, since soil conditions are seldom optimal for Fenton’s reaction, the balance between chemical oxidation and transport may vary. In this study, it was found that, with a high enough hydrogen peroxide concentration (5 M), methyl tert-butyl ether–spiked groundwater could be treated even under suboptimal conditions for chemical mineralization. In these cases, volatilization was not only contributing to the total removal but also leading to rebound effects similar to those associated with air sparging techniques. Likewise for diesel, temporal transport from soil to the aqueous phase was found to lead to false positives that outweighed the actual remediation effect through chemical mineralization.

Efficient Activation of Peroxydisulfate by a Novel Magnetic Nanocomposite Lignin Hydrogel for Contaminant Degradation: Radical and Nonradical Pathways

Abstract:A novel magnetic nanocomposite lignin hydrogel (MNLH) was synthesized and applied for peroxydisulfate (PDS) activation in this study. Detailed characterization data indicated that the unique 3-dimensional (3D) structure of the lignin hydrogel is beneficial in dispersing magnetic nanoparticles (nZVI/Ni particles), which enhances the maximum exposure of nZVI/Ni particles. The 3D structure of the lignin hydrogel provides more attachment sites for nZVI/Ni, PDS and contaminants, accelerating the electron transfer between nZVI/Ni and PDS and promoting the degradation of contaminant. Notably, the optimized MNLH0.8 catalyst (where the number 0.8 indicates the mass ratio of [Lignin hydrogel]/[nZVI/Ni] = 0.8) exhibits excellent performance for PDS activation. Under the MNLH0.8/PDS system, 5 mg/L bisphenol A (BPA, 40 mL) can be completely degraded within 15 min with 0.05 g/ L catalyst and 0.66 mM PDS. Quenching experiments and electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra reveal that both radicals (O2 & BULL;?) and nonradicals (1O2) are generated in the MNLH0.8/PDS system as the dominant active species for BPA degradation. In addition, the MNLH0.8 catalyst still shows effectiveness for BPA degradation in the presence of inorganic anions and natural organic matter (NOM). UPLC-Q-TOF-MS system was used to identify the BPA degradation products and four possible pathways for BPA degradation were proposed. According to the results of toxicity prediction, BPA can eventually be transformed into nontoxic products. Additionally, the MNLH/PDS system can effectively degrade different contaminants in water, which highlights promising applications for organic wastewater treatment.
