Abstract:Purpose This study provides a comprehensive overview of the research landscape of Kansei engineering (KE) within the domain of emotional clothing design. It explores the pivotal technologies, challenges and potential future directions of KE, offering application methodologies and theoretical underpinnings to support emotional clothing design. Design/methodology/approach This study briefly introduces KE, outlining its overarching research methodologies and processes. This framework lays the groundwork for advancing research in clothing Kansei. Subsequently, by reviewing literature from both domestic and international sources, this research initially explores the application of KE in the design and evaluation of clothing products as well as the development of intelligent clothing design systems from the vantage point of designers. Second, it investigates the role of KE in the customization of online clothing recommendation systems and the optimization of retail environments, as perceived by consumers. Finally, with the research methodologies of KE as a focal point, this paper discusses the principal challenges and opportunities currently confronting the field of clothing Kansei research. Findings At present, studies in the domain of clothing KE have achieved partial progress, but there are still some challenges to be solved in the concept, technical methods and area of application. In the future, multimodal and multisensory user Kansei acquisition, multidimensional product deconstruction, artificial intelligence (AI) enabling KE research and clothing sales environment Kansei design will become new development trends. Originality/value This study provides significant directions and concepts in the technology, methods and application types of KE, which is helpful to better apply KE to emotional clothing design.

Abstract:Understanding consumer cognitive and affective needs is a complex and tricky challenge for consumer studies. Creating and defining product attributes that meet the consumers' personal wishes and needs in different contexts is a challenge that demands new perspectives because there are mismatches between the objective of companies and the consumer's objective, which indicates the need for products to become increasingly consumer-oriented. Product design approaches aim to bring the product and consumer closer together. The objective of this study is to investigate the application of the cognitive and affective needs of the consumer in product design through a systematic review of the literature of publications carried out in the last 20 years. This article selects research carried out in the specific area of cognitive and affective product design and defines the state of the art of the main areas, challenges, and trends. The conclusion that was reached is that cognitive approaches have been updated, are more associated with technology, and so are focused and oriented toward the ease and friendliness of the product. In contrast, affective approaches are older and focus on the quality of life, satisfaction, pleasure, and friendliness of the product. This review indicates that the emotional focus of change for cognitive complexity is due to an understanding of the affective and emotional subjectivity of the consumers and how they can translate these requirements into product attributes. These approaches seem to lose their strength or preference in the areas of design and engineering for more rational and logical cognitive applications, and therefore are more statistically verifiable. Advances in neuroscience are focused on applications in marketing and consumer psychology and some cognitive and affective product designs.

Abstract:In the fiercely competitive product market, product designs have already moved from the product-oriented approach to a marketing-oriented approach, and gradually to a customer-oriented approach. Therefore, it is of high necessity to study users’ emotional needs aroused by the product's multi-dimensional design variables. This paper contributes a systematically emotional design method of products’ hard interface based on Kansei Engineering (KE), which can be used to design a product that echoes users’ emotions. Based on the representative pairwise Kansei image words and multi-dimensional key design variables obtained by the consumer-oriented techniques, the KE models are established. Finally, the integration of KE models and Genetic Algorithm is employed to search for a near-optimal design scheme. This proposed method is effectively demonstrated in terms of the mini digital camera. It can be used in various design cases to optimise the product emotional design.

Abstract:Due to the changes and complications of emerging society, designers are required not only to know about their design values, but also understand the link between their design and the impacts on the users. This paper aims to show a Kansei focused proposition for sustainable behaviour. By investigating the relationship between Subjective Preference (Like-Dislike) and product evaluation, it shows how affective values, which are used in Kansei engineering researches, influence user’s preferences. In this study, it was considering (1) various factors of product (e.g. the view variation and blackness of products), and (2) Reality Sets (Uninominal–Binominal). Car-front-face, car-side, car-multi-aspect (as Uninominal Reality Sets) and combinations of car front and side (as Binominal Reality Sets) were used as stimuli. The experiment consists of item screening and product evaluation. Subjects were participated in both. The aim of item screening was at selecting subjectively preferred/non-preferred images. Images, which were screened through item screening, were reconciliated per subject. The aim of product evaluation was at investigating if Subjective Preference has related to product evaluation. Semantic Differential method was used as product evaluation method. Evaluation values were preference, aesthetic and pleasure. The findings shows: (1) Subjective Preference is related to product evaluation independently in Uninominal Reality Sets, whereas Subjective Preference is related to product evaluation dependently in Binominal Reality Sets (2) partial preferred images influence product evaluation in Uninominal Reality Sets, whereas Binominal Reality Sets do not influence it.

Abstract:<span>Optimising affective design based on customer needs help to earn competitive advantages. However, affective design has been studied qualitatively and the value of online opinions providing affective design ideas has not been exploited deeply. To fill this gap, a framework is proposed to reveal customer affective needs from a perspective of the Kansei-integrated Kano model. Firstly, inspired by Kansei Engineering, customer affective emotions are extracted contextually from online reviews. Next, related product features are positioned based on syntactic relations and a clustering algorithm. Enlightened by the Kano model, product features are prioritised based on affective emotions to show their importance on customer satisfaction. Finally, experiments with practical data are illustrated to evaluate the effectiveness in innovative product design. Take smartphone for example and camera, material, aesthetic design, safety, service, physical interface, and price are found to be attractive features in this study. Additionally, product reviews are transferred into a structured format by analysing affective emotions and corresponding features. It provides a straightforward perspective on affective needs, which facilitate new product design by including innovative design ideas and the proposed KE-integrated Kano model helps to capture customer affective needs and give inspirable insights for affective design from the viewpoint of companies.</span>

Abstract:This article explores academic literature both domestically and internationally, and organizes knowledge related to users’ perceptual cognitive measurement and its design applications. When facing the problems in traditional users’ perception measurement, deep research should be conducted in two aspects. Firstly, it is necessary to pay attention to the increasement in sample collection volume and the comprehensiveness of measurement. Secondly, we should continue to explore the correlation between users' perceptual cognition and their measurement applications. To address these issues, this article proposes a product design path based on Kansei Engineering and TOPSIS, which is driven by artificial intelligence. By translating the subjective evaluation results of users into design specifications, it can provide strong guidance for product design. In order to verify the effectiveness of this method, a seat design is selected as a case study. The research results indicate that this path aims to deeply tap into user perception, help designers comprehensively understand users’ needs, and provide solutions that better meet user expectations and satisfaction, thereby enhancing users' psychological identification with the product and enhancing its competitiveness in the market.

Abstract:To perfect a service, service providers must understand the fundamental emotional effects that a service may invoke. Kansei Engineering (KE) has been recently adapted to service industries to realize the relationships between service design elements and customers’ emotional perceptions. However, effective service design based on KE is still seriously challenged by the uncertainty and behavioral biases of customers’ emotions. This article tries to propose an uncertain KE methodology for behavioral service design. To do so, an integrative framework is first proposed by linking design attributes, emotional needs, and overall satisfaction, so as to design services best satisfying customers’ emotional needs. Second, multinomial logistic regression is used to build the uncertain relationships between design attributes and emotional attributes. Third, a quantitative Kano model is proposed to model the asymmetric and nonlinear satisfaction functions reflecting the “gains and losses” effect of positive emotions and negative emotions. Next, the Prospect Theory is used to derive customer overall satisfaction by distinguishing the “gains and losses”. Finally, the proposed methodology is applied to a case study of the campus express delivery service in China. An independent tracking study shows that the results are consistent with service acceptance and provide valuable insights.

Abstract:Today’s development focuses on the integration of affective meaning into products and services. Kansei Engineering (KE) is a technology that establishes the relationship between customers’ kansei and design elements to optimize the design for customers. This study aims to identify the research status and emerging trends in KE research by using visualization analysis with CiteSpace. We retrieve 2830 articles from the core collection of the Web of Science (1995–2021). First, based on the chronological distribution and background of research institutions, journals, literatures, countries and core authors, this study analyzes the main contributions, knowledge sources, interdisciplinary characteristics and major research domains of KE. Second, the research hotspots and cutting-edge technologies are intuitively presented and analyzed to reveal the knowledge structure and research frontier. Finally, this research expounds upon the evolution and developmental process of each stage and proposes the emerging trends of KE research, which are the use of big data in the Internet era, multidisciplinary cooperation, and the integration of multiple mathematical algorithms to serve multiapplication practice. This is also the orientation for further research on KE in the succeeding stages.

Abstract:Nowadays, product design for the global market has to meet the needs and demands of more than a single group of users. Besides the required functionality, the emotional value of the product also plays an important role in user satisfaction. One of the aspects that an interdisciplinary design team should consider while developing a new product is the users’ cross-cultural differences in emotional responses toward product elements. The objective of this study was to use the adjusted Kansei engineering methodology, named the Kansei cross-culture (KCUL) model, in order to discover the differences or similarities in emotional responses toward shapes and colors of diverse groups of participants. This study demonstrates this methodology on two groups of students, one from Central Europe and the other from South Asia (India). We presumed that the observed participants will have different associations toward certain shape and color samples, as well as that they will differ in the intensity of responses. The data were collected through Semantic differential questionnaires and the five-level Likert scale. The survey results were then analyzed using the Factor analysis, the Independent t-test, and the Linear mixed models.
Study on Kanzei-driving Knowledge Base Model to Support Rapid Product Design

Abstract:Aiming at the demand characteristic of some arts and crafts whose styles change fast and life cycle is short, the relation between the product characteristic and the Kanzei knowledge of customer toward product was analyzed, and the model of Kanzei-driving product design knowledge base was constructed to support rapid product design. In the model, object-oriented method was used to construct product models. SML (tabular layouts of article characteristics) technology was utilized to express the general product features(style feature, function feature, geometrical feature, material feature, colour feature, technical feature and so on), and main model and SML-based standard design elements base were created to be chosen and variated in the design process. The Kanzei measure metrics of design elements was established, and Kanzei measures of every design elements and product model (combinations mode of the elements) were evaluated according to the aesthetic principle. With HOQ (house of quality), the customers' requirements were converted to the Kanzei requirement for product model and the design elements. The similarity algorithm of characteristics vector space model was used search the optimized product model and standard design elements from the design knowledge base to form the concept sketch and main model of products, so that the final designs of products could be rapidly completed by designers. The application in a jewelry company indicated that the method reduced average cycle of jewelry development, and improved the efficiency of product design.

Abstract:Recent years have shown an increase in the importance of emotions applied to the Design field—Emotional Design. In this sense, the emotional design aims to elicit (e.g., pleasure) or prevent (e.g., displeasure) determined emotions, during human product interaction. That is, the emotional design regulates the emotional interaction between the individual and the product (e.g., robot). Robot design has been a growing area whereby robots are interacting directly with humans in which emotions are essential in the interaction. Therefore, this paper aims, through a non-systematic literature review, to explore the application of emotional design, particularly on Human-Robot Interaction. Robot design features (e.g., appearance, expressing emotions and spatial distance) that affect emotional design are introduced. The chapter ends with a discussion and a conclusion.

Abstract:Industry 4.0 has ushered in a new era of process automation, thus redefining the role of people and altering existing workplaces into unknown formats. The number of robots in the manufacturing industry has been steadily increasing for several decades and in recent years the number and variety of industries using robots have also increased. For robots to become allies in the day-to-day lives of operators, they need to provide positive and fit-for-purpose experiences through smooth and satisfying interactions. In this sense, user experience (UX) serves as the greatest link between persons and robots. Essential to the study of UX is its evaluation. Therefore, the aim of this study is to identify methodologies that evaluate the human–robot interaction (HRI) from a human-centred approach. A systematic literature review has been carried out, in which 24 articles have been identified. Among these, are 15 experimental studies, in addition to theoretical frameworks and tools. The review has provided insight into how evaluations are conducted in HRI. The results show the most evaluated factors and how they are measured considering different types of measurements: qualitative and quantitative, objective and subjective. Research gaps and future directions are correspondingly identified.

Abstract:The product architecture has a significant influence on all phases of the product life cycle. Many literature sources claim modular product design offers a large range of advantages for addressing this influence. For example, it enables mass customisation, allows environmentally friendly end-of-life strategies, reduces development costs and allows efficient work in loosely coupled organisations. However, the generally low level of justification of these advantages together with the lack of commonly accepted theoretical references leads to a rather scattered view of the potential of modularisation. Moreover, the diversity of methodological approaches and the lack of common vocabulary represent a challenge for standardisation of practices and may hinder systematic implementation in product development. In particular, more guidance may be required to allow product development teams to choose the right modularisation approach that fits in with their objectives. This article summarises published literature in order to introduce a common language in the field of product modularisation and to build the theoretical basis of a multi-purpose approach – termed ‘modularization for X’. It is based on a systematic literature review covering a corpus of 163 publications, provides a structured compilation of drivers, design principles and metrics for modularisation, and identifies challenges for further research efforts.

Abstract:Consumer’s emotional requirements, or the so-called Kansei needs, have become one of the most important concerns in product design nowadays. In this regard, the semantic differential (SD) method has been widely used in emotional product design and Kansei engineering to address the relationships between emotions and products. However, the conventional SD method assumes that the survey participants’ understandings on Kansei adjectives or tags are consistent, which might not be true for all design cases. As a result, classification of products using Kansei tags may not reflect a consumer’s genuine opinions. Accordingly, a basic-emotion based semantic differential method is proposed in this work. The proposed method improves the conventional SD method by taking variances of Kansei tags into consideration for better products classification in emotional design. It incorporates basic-emotion systems to identify Kansei variance and mapping functions in determining transformed values on Kansei-tag dimensions. Therefore, the adjusted Kansei mean values, which help classify products using Kansei tags, are obtained. The proposed approach is presented and illustrated using a case study of perfume bottle design. The results reveal that the proposed method is promising for handling product classifications in emotional design.Relevance to industryThis study presents a generic method to establish the relationships between consumers’ Kansei needs and products for new product development. The knowledge gained from the method is beneficial in assisting the mapping of product domain into Kansei domain when applying Kansei engineering. Especially it helps to suggest a quantified range of each Kansei tag for product designers so that the links between products and Kansei requirements can be more clarified to them. It appears that the proposed method can be utilized to better classify products under Kansei tags as well as to facilitate decision-making in practical industrial design cases.

Abstract:The recent increase in digitalization of industrial systems has resulted in a boost in data availability in the industrial environment. This has favored the adoption of machine learning (ML) methodologies for the analysis of data, but not all contexts boast data abundance. When data are scarce or costly to collect, Design of Experiments (DOE) can be used to provide an informative dataset for analysis using ML techniques. This article aims to provide a systematic overview of the literature on the joint application of DOE and ML in product innovation (PI) settings. To this end, a systematic literature review (SLR) of two major scientific databases is conducted, retrieving 388 papers, of which 86 are selected for careful analysis. The results of this review delineate the state of the art and identify the main trends in terms of experimental designs and ML algorithms selected for joint application on PI. The gaps, open problems, and research opportunities are identified, and directions for future research are provided.

Abstract:Meeting the personalized needs of users is the key to achieving the sustainable success of a product. It depends not only on the product's functionality but also on satisfying users' emotional needs for the product's appearance. Therefore, researchers have been conducting research focusing on Kansei engineering theory to determine users' emotional needs effectively. The initial process involves accurately extracting and filtering emotional data and Kansei words from consumers. Thus, we propose an evaluation model to efficiently obtain, screen, and sort these Kansei words based on Kansei engineering, using household portable air conditioners as research subjects. By integrating techniques for online user comment mining methods, users' Kansei terms related to the product's appearance can be gathered efficiently. These terms are then combined with image samples and filtered to determine a final set of 16 Kansei word pairs. Subsequently, the fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (FAHP) is utilized to prioritize these terms, and the fuzzy comprehensive evaluation (FCE) method is used to validate the results and determine the applicability of the evaluation model. The results showed that Kansei words could be quickly and objectively acquired using existing text mining techniques on online reviews. Moreover, the weights of different Kansei terms of the product's appearance in the consumer's perception are accurately produced through the FAHP. This evaluation model marks a significant advancement in accurately obtaining users' emotional data in Kansei engineering. It offers valuable guidance for designing products that meet users' personalized needs, enhancing design efficiency and reducing resource wastage at the early stages of designing, and improving the sustainability development of Kansei engineering.

Abstract:Recent studies show that products and services hold great appeal if they are attractively designed to elicit emotional feelings from customers. Kansei engineering (KE) has good potential to provide a competitive advantage to those able to read and translate customer affect and emotion in actual product and services. This study introduces an integrative framework of the Kano model and KE, applied to services. The Kano model was used and inserted into KE to exhibit the relationship between service attribute performance and customer emotional response. Essentially, the Kano model categorises service attribute quality into three major groups (must-be [M], one-dimensional [O] and attractive [A]). The findings of a case study that involved 100 tourists who stayed in luxury 4- and 5-star hotels are presented. As a practical matter, this research provides insight on which service attributes deserve more attention with regard to their significant impact on customer emotional needs. STATEMENT OF RELEVANCE: Apart from cognitive evaluation, emotions and hedonism play a big role in service encounters. Through a focus on delighting qualities of service attributes, this research enables service providers and managers to establish the extent to which they prioritise their improvement efforts and to always satisfy their customer emotions beyond expectation.
