Abstract:This work presents the synthesis of N‐doped nanoporous carbon materials using the Ionic Liquid (IL) 1‐butyl‐3‐methylimidazolium tricyanomethanide [BMIM][TCM] as a fluidic carbon precursor, employing two carbonization pathways: templated precursor and pyrolysis/activation. Operando monitoring of mass loss during pyrolytic and activation treatments provides insights into chemical processes, including IL decomposition, polycondensation reactions and pore formation. Comparatively low mass reduction rates were observed at all stages. Heat treatments indicated stable pore size and increasing volume/surface area over time. The resulting N‐doped carbon structures were evaluated as electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and adsorbents for gases and organic vapors. Materials from the templated precursor pathway exhibited high electrocatalytic performance in ORR, analyzed using Rotating Ring‐Disk electrode (RRDE). Enhanced adsorption of m‐xylene was attributed to wide micropores, while satisfactory CO2 adsorption efficiency was linked to specific morphological features and a relatively high content of N‐sites within the C‐networks. This research contributes valuable insights into the synthesis and applications of N‐doped nanoporous carbon materials, highlighting their potential in electrocatalysis and adsorption processes.

Tailoring nitrogen content in doped carbon by a facile synthesis with ionic liquid precursors for lithium ion batteries

Abstract:Ionic liquids have been intensively explored as precursors for doped carbons used as the anode materials in lithium ion batteries. Thanks to the vast number of potential ionic liquids, the types and contents of heteroatoms in the derived carbons can be tailored by appropriately choosing the ionic liquid precursors. In this work, nitrogen-doped carbons are synthesized through facile pyrolysis of ionic liquids with different nitrogen contents. Three types of nitrogen-doped carbons with a nitrogen content of 13.99 at.%, 11.79 at.% and 10.75 at.% were derived from [EMIm]N(CN)2, [BMIm]N(CN)2 and [HMIm]N(CN)2 ionic liquids, respectively. It was found that increase of nitrogen content leads to decrease of charge transfer resistance and increase of capacity. The improved cell performance is related to the change of nitrogen-bonding configuration, microstructure, defect density and surface area of the derived carbons induced by the increased nitrogen content. Eventually, an appropriate selection of ionic liquids can achieve to tailor the nitrogen content of doped carbons and optimize the performance of lithium ion batteries.
Versatile Synthesis of Carbon Materials using Protic Ionic Liquids and Salts as Precursors

Abstract:This account focuses on the correlations between the PIL/PS precursors and the resulting carbon materials in terms of heteroatom doping, pore structure, carbon yield, graphitization, conductivity, and thermal stability. By designing the chemical structure of the precursors at the molecular level, controllable synthesis of carbon materials can be achieved, offering a new general route to synthesizing advanced functional carbon materials. Carbon materials (CMs) hold immense potential for applications across a wide range of fields. However, current precursors often confront limitations such as low heteroatom content, poor solubility, or complicated preparation and post‐treatment procedures. Our research has unveiled that protic ionic liquids and salts (PILs/PSs), generated from the neutralization of organic bases with protonic acids, can function as economical and versatile small‐molecule carbon precursors. The resultant CMs display attractive features, including elevated carbon yield, heightened nitrogen content, improved graphitic structure, robust thermal stability against oxidation, and superior conductivity, even surpassing that of graphite. These properties can be elaborate modulated by varying the molecular structure of PILs/PSs. In this Personal Account, we summarize recent developments in PILs/PSs‐derived CMs, with a particular focus on the correlations between precursor structure and the physicochemical properties of CMs. We aim to impart insights into the foreseeable controlled synthesis of advanced CMs.

Abstract:The structural diversity of ionic liquids can control the properties and structures of carbon materials at the molecular level. A nitrogen and boron codoped and highly crystalline metal porous carbon material was synthesized through cothermal condensation of the [Bmim][BF4] (Bmim=1‐butyl‐3‐methylimidazolium) ionic liquid and cobalt(II) 5,10,15,20‐tetraphenylporphyrin. In this approach, the ionic liquid acted as both a soft template and a heteroatom precursor. The resulting B‐doped Co‐N‐C nanomaterial showed significantly enhanced catalytic performance toward the selective oxidation of ethylbenzene, in that the conversion of ethylbenzene was approximately four times higher than that of the catalyst without the introduced B atoms. Moreover, the CoNCB‐2 catalyst was successfully recycled several times without any significant loss in activity. Such a boron, nitrogen, and metal ternary codoped porous carbon shows promise as a catalyst for chemocatalysis.
A Diazonium Salt‐Based Ionic Liquid for Solvent‐Free Modification of Carbon

Abstract:A novel ionic liquid that consists of p-butylbenzenediazonium ions and bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amidates (Tf2N-) has been synthesized as a task-specific ionic liquid for the solvent-free modification of carbon materials. The use of anions Tf2N- is the key to rendering the hydrophobicity, low liquidus temperature, and ionicity to this novel molten salt. This diazonium salt has a melting point of 7.2 degrees C and a moderate electric conductivity of 527 mu s/cm at 25 degrees C. The thermal stability of this diazonium ionic liquid has been investigated by high-resolution thermogravimetric analysis (HRTGA). The compound is stable up to about 90 degrees C in nitrogen, which is only 10 degrees C less than its solid tetrafluoroborate counterpart. The modification of carbon materials has been carried out through both thermal and electrochemical activations of diazonium ions to generate free radical intermediates without the use of any solvent. The surface-coverage loadings of 3.38 mu mol/m(2) and 6.07 mu mol/m(2) for covalently attached organic functionalities have been achieved by the thermally induced functionalization and electrochemically assisted reaction, respectively. Efficient Biomass Transformations Catalyzed by Graphene-Like Nanoporous Carbons Functionalized with Strong Acid Ionic Liquids and Sulfonic Groups

Abstract:Strong acid ionic liquids and sulfonic group bifunctional graphene-like nanoporous carbons (GNC-SO3H-ILs) have been synthesized by treating nitrogen containing graphene-like nanoporous carbons (GNCs) with 1,3-propanesultone, ion exchanging with HSO3CF3 or H2SO4. Introducing nitrogen is important for grafting strong acid ionic liquids and sulfonic group in GNCs, which were synthesized from carbonization of a mixture of dicyandiamide or melamine and glucose. GNC-SO3H-ILs possess abundant nanopores, nanosheet structure, good dispersion and controlled acidity. By themselves, they are capable of enhancing the fast diffusion of reactants and products, while increasing the exposure degree of acidic sites in GNC-SO3H-ILs throughout various reactions. The above characteristics resulted in their much improved catalytic activity in biomass transformations such as the production of biodiesel and depolymerization of crystalline cellulose into sugars, which was even comparable to those of homogeneous ionic liquid and mineral acids.
Boron "gluing" nitrogen heteroatoms in a prepolymerized ionic liquid-based carbon scaffold for durable supercapacitive activity

Abstract:The incorporation of heterogeneous active sites into the carbon scaffold offers great potential to break the energy limitation in state-of-the-art supercapacitors, but rich heteroatomic motifs essentially thwart the scaffold firmness, leading to poor power/cycling durability under wide operational voltages/temperatures. Herein, a high-crosslinking prepolymerized ionic liquid p[ABA-co-MA][PA] network is designed to initially trap volatile heterogeneous segments during annealing, and gives the final N/B/O-doped porous carbon scaffolds (CPILs) with rich electroactive sites and pre-supposed structural superiorities. B-doped sites on the scaffold are bridged to glue/fix more electroactive N (4.21-9.05 at%) compared with the solely N-doped sample (2.87 at%), and the high binding energy of the consequent B-C bonds further consolidates the porous carbon scaffold for durable ion/electron transfer. As a result, the highly electroactive CPIL surface with 2629 m(2) g(-1) surface area and 23.13 at% electroactive N/B/O enables a large specific capacitance (359 F g(-1) @ 0.5 A g(-1)) and slight capacitance fade (19% @ 20 A g(-1)) in H2SO4 electrolyte, as well as maximized electrode capacitance up to 211 F g(-1) at 3.5 V in EMIM-BF4 owing to the strong electrosorption ability of the electrolyte ions. Moreover, the CPIL-loaded symmetric supercapacitor in TMA-BF4/EMIM-BF4 electrolyte yields a high energy output of 116 W h kg(-1) @ 400 W kg(-1) under a high potential of 4 V, durable service life (98.2% retention after 10 000 cycles) and wide temperature applicability from -3.5 to 82 degrees C. This work highlights the comprehensive improvement of multi-heteroatom doping in supercapacitive activity and durability, which provides an appealing strategy to enrich various applications.

Abstract:A new synthetic strategy, named "carbonization in limited space" and based on the specific interaction between eutectic salt and dual-ionic liquids (dual-ILs), is reported in this article. N-Containing dual-ILs (1,4-diethyl-1,4-diazaniabicyclo[2,2,2]octane imidazolide-4,5-dicyanoiazolide, [2C2DABCO](2+)[Im](-)[CN-Im](-)) were synthesized as new carbon-nitrogen precursors, while eutectic salt was chosen as a reuseable template in order to facilely fabricate the N-doped porous carbon with sheetlike morphology. Nitrogen can be directly and efficiently incorporated into the porous carbon, resulting in the materials with suitable N content, tunable pore structure, and controllable thickness of sheet as well as high surface area. They exhibited good performance as electrodes for supercapacitors, photocatalysts in degradation of methyl orange (MO) under visible light, and the sorbent to capture tobacco-specific N-nitrosamines (TSNAs) in solution, offering a new simplified but effective method to prepare versatile carbon material.

Abstract:Amino-functionalized ionic liquid was synthesized and used as an electrolyte for electrocatalytic activation and conversion of carbon dioxide and methanol into dimethyl carbonate with graphite cathode under ambient conditions. The amino-functionalized ionic liquid was found to be best performance for electrochemical synthesis of dimethyl carbonate from methanol and CO2 in the absence of any other additives due to its effective capture and activation of CO2. Abstract:A ternary copolymerized poly(ionic liquid) of bis-imidazolium-based ionic liquid and crosslinking agents (divinylbenzene (DVB), N, N'-methylene bisacrylamide (MBA)) was rationally designed as versatile precursor to synthesize nitrogen-doped porous carbons by self-templating method for efficient CO2 separation. The ionic liquid monomer and MBA could serve as nitrogen sources to enhance the surface polarity through in-situ doping, while the self-decomposed functional groups (especially-CONH-) along with halogen anions could promote the formation of pores during carbonization. By adjusting the molar ratio of ionic liquid to DVB and MBA, carbonization temperature and activator dosage (KOH), the obtained CVDM0.5-700 (0.5:1:1, 700 C, 2 mol/L) owned a considerable specific surface area (1835 m(2)/g), plentiful (ultra)micropores and moderate nitrogen content (3.05 wt%). The strong van der Waals force arising from ultra-micropores (d < 0.7 nm) within a narrow distribution improved the ability to capture CO2 and the abundant CO2-philic N species further strengthened the binding interactions. Consequently, CVDM0.5-700 was endowed with satisfactory CO2 uptake capacity (4.11 mmol/g), desirable CO2/N-2 (15%/85%) adsorption selectivity (23.6) and excellent cyclic stability at 25 ? and normal pressure. This work provided a new pathway for the modulated fabrication of heteroatoms-doped porous carbon materials by precise design of poly(ionic liquid)-based precursors for appealing applications.

Abstract:Rationally and efficiently controlling chemical composition, microstructure, and morphology of carbon nanomaterials plays a crucial role in significantly enhancing their functional properties and expending their applications. In this work, a novel strategy for simultaneously controlling these structural parameters was developed on the base of a multifunctional precursor approach, in which the precursor not only serves as carbon source and structure-directing agent, but also contains two heteroatom doping sites. As exemplified by using pyrrole-terminated ionic liquid surfactant as such precursor, in conjunction with sol-gel chemistry this strategy allows for efficiently producing well-defined hollow carbon spheres with controlled microstructure and chemical compositions. Remarkably, the dual-doping sites in confined silica channels provide an exciting opportunity and flexibility to access various doped carbons through simply anion exchange or altering the used oxidative polymerization agent, especially the multispecies codoped materials by combination of the two doping modes. All the results indicate that the described strategy may open up a new avenue for efficiently synthesizing functional carbon materials with highly controllable capability.
Nitrile Chain Reactions for Cyano-Based Ionic Liquid Derived Mesoporous Carbon As Efficient Bifunctional Electrocatalyst

Abstract:Different from the intermediate nitrile cyclotrimerization reactions, a new nitrile chain reaction is proposed to interpret the condensation and carbonization process of cyano-based ionic liquids [MCNIm] [TFSI] which is used as a model precursor. The nitrile chain reaction forms several oligomers including dimers, trimers and tetramers during the condensation process at low temperature. The results show the oligomers are pyrolyzed to small fragments at high temperature undergoing a variety of cross- linking and recombination to produce more stable benzene and pyridine based polycyclic aromatic groups prior to the final mesoporous carbon material formation. The cyano-based ionic liquids and nitrile chain reaction mechanism readily yields mesoporous carbon with a specific surface area of 1050 m(2) g(-1) and a high co-doping with N and S and a content of graphitized material. In terms of potential applications, the N, S-codoped mesoporous carbon material facilitates excellent bifunctional electrocatalytic activity toward the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) comparable to the benchmark of those commercial 20 wt% Pt/C and RuO2 catalysts, respectively. Remarkably, our analyses show bis(trifluoromethanesulphonyl)-imide (TFSI) anions display much better thermal stability than imidazolium cations, which suggests future potential for other functional cations with more thermally stable intermediate polymeric structures. Synthesis of Presodiated B, N Co-doped Carbon Materials and Application in Sodium Ions Batteries with Enhanced Initial Coulombic Efficiency

Abstract:Heteroatoms doped carbon-based materials have attracted abundant attention as an anode material in highenergy density and low-cost sodium ions batteries (SIBs). However, the low initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE) resulted from the irreversible Na trapping and the formation of solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) is denounced in the practical application. In this work, presodiated B and N co-doped carbons are fabricated by a facial one-step synthetic process employing graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) as precursor and NaBH4 as both presodiation agent and B sources. The high doping levels of B and N in the resultant carbon materials lead to a promising Na+ storage capability (308 mAh g-1 at 0.05 A g-1) when served as the anode in SIBs. More importantly, desirable ICE as high as 96.1% was recorded for the obtained presodiated B, N co-doped carbon material benefiting from the pre-incorporated sodium, which passivates the irreversible reactive sites. This work provides a novel route to realize simultaneous presodiation and B, N co-doping within carbon materials, enabling promising Na+ storage capability and enhanced ICE for application in SIBs.

Abstract:Porous carbon materials have been regarded as a promising alternative to activated carbon for desalination via capacitive deionization (CDI) due to refined architectures and functionalities. However, it is still challenging to obtain a controlled hierarchical pore structure and considerable nitrogen-doped content by convenient method. Herein, nitrogen-doped hierarchical porous carbon foams (NHCFs) with different microstructural features, nitrogen contents and nitrogen species were successfully fabricated via a stepwise pyrolysis carbonization strategy using easily available melamine foam. Due to the synergistic effect of hierarchical porous structure and doped nitrogen, the optimized NHCF sample carbonized at 800celcius (NHCF-800) exhibited a maximum desalination capacity of 30.1 mg g-1 at the optimal operating parameters (500 mg/L NaCl solution, 1.2 V) and an excellent regeneration performance after 50 continuous adsorption-desorption cycles. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) was also conducted to elaborate the disparity of sodium adsorption energy among the nitrogen species for in-depth understanding, and it mainly benefits from the ascendency of the pyrrolic-N and pyridinic-N over the graphitic-N dopant. This work paves the way of rational regulation of nitrogen-doped process and hierarchical porous structure carbon as CDI electrode materials for desalination.

Abstract:A panel of dicationic ionic liquids (DILs) with different rigid xylyl (ortho, meta, para) spacers and different anions (bromide and tungstate) has been synthetised and characterised through different experimental and computational techniques. Differences and analogies between the systems are analysed using information derived from their DFT structures, semiempirical dynamics, thermal behaviour, and catalytic properties versus the well-known reaction of CO2 added to epichlorohydrin. A comparison between the proposed systems and some analogues that present non-rigid spacers shows the key effect displayed by structure rigidity on their characteristics. The results show an interesting correlation between structure, flexibility, properties, and catalytic activity.

Nitrogen‐Doped Inverse Opal Carbons Derived from an Ionic Liquid Precursor for the Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Abstract:Three-dimensionally macroporous nitrogen-doped carbon materials are fabricated via carbonization of an ionic-liquid-based small molecule precursor, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium dicyanamide, using opal silica colloidal crystals as a hard template. As compared to traditional polymerizable monomer-based precursors such as furfuryl alcohol, the entire process involving ionic liquid does not require any acid catalyst and prepolymerization step. More importantly, nitrogen heteroatoms can be incorporated into the carbon skeleton insitu. The obtained inverse opal carbons possess large surface areas and pore volumes, and high nitrogen content. When acting as metal-free electrocatalysts, the inverse opal carbons exhibit high catalytic activity and selectivity towards the oxygen reduction reaction in alkaline electrolyte, much better than that of the furfuryl-alcohol-derived inverse opal carbon and close to that of commercial Pt/C catalysts.

Abstract:A polymerizable ionic liquid is explored as the precursor to produce nitrogen-doped carbon powders. The ionic liquid is functionalized with NO3 − anions, which decompose and release gases during the pyrolysis process, facilitating the formation of a carbon foam. Scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy analyses show that the carbon foam is composed of curved carbon nanosheets with the maximum thickness of 70 nm. The favorable compositional (nitrogen doping to provide catalytically active sites) and morphological (curved nanosheet architecture to increase the contact area between electrolytes and catalytically active sites) characteristics make the present carbon powders a potential metal-free electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction and oxygen evolution reactions. As expected, the nitrogen-doped and curved carbon nanosheets exhibit a considerable activity towards the oxygen reduction reaction as well as a moderate ability for catalyzing the oxygen evolution reaction in KOH solutions.
Dissolution of Alkali Lignin in Ionic Liquid to Fabricate Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Microspheres for Electrochemical Supercapacitors

Abstract:Ionic liquids (ILs) have been extensively sought after for green solvents, catalysts, adsorbents, and carbon pre -cursors. Herein, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ([Emim][Ac])-lignin nitrogen-doped carbon microspheres (ECLMs) were easily synthesized through pre-oxidation and carbonization processes using a solution containing [Emim][Ac] and alkali lignin. The pre-oxidation process is analogous to the ionothermal carbonization method, wherein [Emim][Ac] serves as a reaction medium for preparing the ELCMs precursor. During the carbonization process, [Emim][Ac] served as a templating agent and heteroatom source to facilitate nitrogen doping and formation of micropores and mesopores. The as-synthesized ELCMs exhibits a considerably high specific surface area of 1267.2 m2/g and an optimal nitrogen-doping level of 2.21 %. This reveals its potential as a promising candidate for electrode materials in supercapacitor. The ELCMs demonstrate a remarkable specific capacitance of 262.5 F/g at 0.5 A/g and excellent rate capability in a three-electrode system. Additionally, the symmetric supercapacitor fabricated with electrode materials of ELCMs and a cellulose separator exhibits excellent cycling stability, with an impressive capacitance retention rate of 91.0 % after undergoing 5000 cycles at 5 A/g. Moreover, it achieves an ideal energy density of 4.17 Wh/kg at power density of 126 W/kg. This study investigates an effective strategy for designing and synthesizing different heteroatom-doped carbon materials from IL-biomass resources to enhance their applicability in energy storage devices.
Cyano groups: New active sites of porous carbon materials achieving a superior K-ion storage

Abstract:N-doping can endow carbon materials with high electrochemical activity. Besides the widely validated sp2-hybridized nitrogen doping, sp-hybridized nitrogen (sp-N) atoms are also expected to be new active sites. However, both sp-N atoms and cyano (CN) groups containing sp-N are rarely produced in carbon materials presently. In this work, the first cyano groups-modified carbon materials are synthesized firstly via an interesting struggle between the chemical etching of KOH and the catalytic graphitization of Co nanoparticles in carbon frameworks. The theoretical calculations and experimental results manifest that the stronger electronegativity of CN groups renders carbon materials a higher electrochemical activity. As K+ storage anodes, the CN-modified carbon materials exhibit an obvious boost in potassium storage performance in both ester- and ether-based electrolytes. Therefore, as a new N doping form, the successful introduction of CN groups into carbon materials opens a door for exploring sp-N doped carbon materials for applications in energy storage and other fields.

Abstract:Molybdenum carbide (MoC) has emerged as a promising material for capacitive deionization (CDI), but the poor electrochemical kinetics in conventional MoC owing to the bulk structure and low electric conductivity limit its CDI performance. To address this challenge, herein, we develop a novel strategy to synthesize ultrafine MoC nanocrystals that are embedded within a three-dimensional nitrogen-doped carbon framework (NC/MoC). This synthesis method involves the space-confined pyrolysis of molybdate precursors within metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). In this process, molybdates are confined into the MOF crystalline structure, where MOFs provide a confined reactor and carbon source. The resulting NC/MoC with the uniformly distributed MoC nanocrystals provides sufficient active sites for the electrosorption of salt ions, while the MOF-derived NC matrix facilitates charge transfer and provides the space-confined effect on preventing the possible aggregations of MoC nanocrystals during the CDI process. The NC/MoC exhibits an impressive salt adsorption capacity (SAC, 84.2 mg g-1, 1.2 V), rapid desalination rate, and high cycling stability (91.4% SAC retention after 200 cycles), better than most previously reported carbon-based CDI materials. Besides, the possible mechanisms are systematically investigated by ex-situ characterizations and density functional theory calculations. This study opens up new avenues for the construction of metal carbide-based nanocrystals for CDI and other electrochemical applications.
