Abstract:In vivo plant hormonal detection methods are the strategies executed on living organisms while not taking out the samples from the body. Modern methods like spectroscopy, biosensors, and electrochemical sensors have increased the quality and sensitivity of the detection and decreased the cumbersome, time, and solvent-consuming preparational efforts of traditional methods. Preparational efforts generally consisted of several samplings, extraction, purification, and enrichment steps to analyze plant hormones. Concentrations and levels of plant hormones change concerning biotic and abiotic stresses that plant faces. Spectroscopy, biosensors, and electrochemical sensors detect different plant hormones with specific accuracy and desired results, but their handling and sample preparations are challenging. At the same time, advanced ultrasensitive nondestructive methods are biocompatible and can be used for a lifetime with excellent stretchability performance. In modern science, portable, wearable, and nondestructive measurement is the trend of plant sensors that can make the “Internet of Plants” concept a reality. This review covers the significant aspects of numerous applications, advantages, and disadvantages of spectroscopy, biosensors, electrochemical sensors, and new ultrasensitive nondestructive devices to measure in vivo plant hormones. The of the advanced ultrasensitive plant devices, their challenges, and future prospects within the fields for in vivo plant hormone detections is presented. Furthermore, it can guide researchers to design new experiments using ultrasensitive nondestructive sensing devices for detecting in vivo plant hormones.

Abstract:Although the concentration of plant hormone abscisic acid (ABA) in crops is very low, it can effectively regulate the growth of crops. Traditional ABA detection methods are limited by expensive instruments and cumbersome sample processing. Therefore, a new method for detecting ABA in ultra-low concentrations is urgently needed. In this paper, a new method for fast and accurate determination of ABA content based on Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) was proposed. In this method, a solution of silver-coated gold nanoparticles (Au@Ag) was self-assembled into dense monolayer under the action of capillary gradient force at the air/water interface, which could be transferred to PDMS wafers and filter paper as SERS active substrates. R6G was used as a probe molecule to characterize the Sensitivity and accuracy of PDMS SERS active substrates. When the PDMS active substrate was selected to detect ABA, the detection limit 1×10−11 M was obtained, indicating that PDMS supported core-shell precious metal monolayer substrate can be used as a effective active substrate for detecting ABA. This method is also expected to be applied to the detection of other plant hormones such as corn and soybean.

Abstract:Raman spectroscopy technique with fingerprint features has advantages of simple pre-treating, rapid response, high sensitivity and in-situ nondestructive detecting in acquiring biological information. Raman imaging technique could reveal the molecular structure and realize chemical composition content distribution of tested samples and it has advantages in obtaining information of plant cell and tissue. Based on these characteristics, Raman spectroscopy and Raman imaging have been widely applied in detecting the quality of agricultural products. This review mainly focused on the detection of plant physiological information about cellular morphology, structure, metabolites in six primary organs (seed, root, stem, leaf, flower and fruit). Although Raman technology is still in early exploration stage and it is facing many tough challenges, it has a broad space for development in agriculture.

Abstract:tered Mg-containing medications can cause hypermagnesemia in patients with normal renal function. With the increasing use of multiple doses of Mg-containing cathartic therapy for poisoned or overdosed patients, more patients will receive higher Mg loads. Safe upper limits for Mg dosage by this route have not been established. Therefore, when treating patients in this manner, physicians should consider monitoring Mg levels and renal function and must be vigilant for signs and symptoms of hypermagnesemia. An alternative is the use of sorbitol1'S as a cathartic, although its safety in multiple doses has not been well studied.

Abstract:Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) technology has unique advantages in the rapid detection of pesticides in plant-derived foods, leading to reduced detection limits and increased accuracy. Plant-derived Chinese herbal medicines have similar sources to plant-derived foods; however, due to the rough surfaces and complex compositions of herbal medicines, the detection of pesticide residues in this context continues to rely heavily on traditional methods, which are time consuming and laborious and are unable to meet market demands for portability. The application of flexible nanomaterials and SERS technology in this realm would allow rapid and accurate detection in a portable format. Therefore, in this review, we summarize the underlying principles and characteristics of SERS technology, with particular focus on applications of SERS for the analysis of pesticide residues in agricultural products. This paper summarizes recent research progress in the field from three main directions: sample pretreatment, SERS substrates, and data processing. The prospects and limitations of SERS technology are also discussed, in order to provide theoretical support for rapid detection of pesticide residues in Chinese herbal medicines.

Abstract:Pesticide and veterinary drug residues in food and environment pose a threat to human health, and a rapid, super-sensitive, accurate and cost-effective analysis technique is therefore highly required to overcome the disadvantages of conventional techniques based on mass spectrometry. Recently, the surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) technique emerges as a potential promising analytical tool for rapid, sensitive and selective detections of environmental pollutants, mostly owing to its possible simplified sample pretreatment, gigantic detectable signal amplification and quick target analyte identification via finger-printing SERS spectra. So theoretically the SERS detection technology has inherent advantages over other competitors especially in complex environmental matrices. The progress in nanostructure SERS substrates and portable Raman appliances will promote this novel detection technology to play an important role in future rapid on-site assay. This paper reviews the advances in nanostructure-based SERS substrates, sensors and relevant portable integrated systems for environmental analysis, highlights the potential applications in the detections of synthetic chemicals such as pesticide and veterinary drug residues, and also discusses the challenges of SERS detection technique for actual environmental monitoring in the future.

In vivo surface-enhanced Raman scattering nanosensor for the real-time monitoring of multiple stress signalling molecules in plants

Abstract:When under stress, plants release molecules to activate their defense system. Detecting these stress-related molecules offers the possibility to address stress conditions and prevent the development of diseases. However, detecting endogenous signalling molecules in living plants remains challenging due to low concentrations of these analytes and interference with other compounds; additionally, many methods currently used are invasive and labour-intensive. Here we show a non-destructive surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)-based nanoprobe for the real-time detection of multiple stress-related endogenous molecules in living plants. The nanoprobe, which is placed in the intercellular space, is optically active in the near-infrared region (785 nm) to avoid interferences from plant autofluorescence. It consists of a Si nanosphere surrounded by a corrugated Ag shell modified by a water-soluble cationic polymer poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride), which can interact with multiple plant signalling molecules. We measure a SERS enhancement factor of 2.9 × 107 and a signal-to-noise ratio of up to 64 with an acquisition time of ~100 ms. To show quantitative multiplex detection, we adopted a binding model to interpret the SERS intensities of two different analytes bound to the SERS hot spot of the nanoprobe. Under either abiotic or biotic stress, our optical nanosensors can successfully monitor salicylic acid, extracellular adenosine triphosphate, cruciferous phytoalexin and glutathione in Nasturtium officinale, Triticum aestivum L. and Hordeum vulgare L.-all stress-related molecules indicating the possible onset of a plant disease. We believe that plasmonic nanosensor platforms can enable the early diagnosis of stress, contributing to a timely disease management of plants.

Abstract:Chemical processing and waste management are of paramount importance in the field of agriculture. As the global population continues to grow, the demand for food production is increasing, placing significant pressure on agricultural systems. Chemical processing and waste management pose significant challenges to environmental sustainability and agricultural productivity. Traditional methods of bioremediation often fall short in providing efficient and robust solutions. However, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) has emerged as a game-changing technology in the field of chemical processing and waste management. This review explores the application of SERS in chemical processing and waste management, focusing on its role in monitoring and assessing pollutants, optimizing remediation strategies, and ensuring sustainable practices. It also provides an introduction to the background of SERS particularly for environmental scientists and determines the recent literature regarding the detection of various types of environmental pollutants operating this system. The SERS signals were used to calculate the amount of heavy metal pollution including lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) with a limit of detection of 8 ppb for Pb and 9.3 ppb, respectively. The limits of detection achieved for SERS detection of ultralow concentrations of three dithiocarbamate fungicides showed the detectability at concentrations below 1 nM. Furthermore, soil and water remediation methods and the application of nano-bioremediation have been summarized. Additionally, it highlights the integration of SERS with advanced techniques, such as bioremediation and nanotechnology, to develop environmentally friendly and economically viable solutions for agricultural land remediation.

Abstract:Uncontrolled use of pesticides in agriculture leads to negative consequences for the environment, as well as for human and animal health. Therefore, timely detection of pesticides will allow application of measures to eliminate the excess of maximum residue limits and reduce possible negative consequences in advance. Common methods of pesticide analysis suffer from high costs, and are time consuming, and labor intensive. Currently, more attention is being paid to the development of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensors as a non-destructive and highly sensitive tool for detecting various chemicals in agricultural applications. This review focuses on the current developments of biocompatible SERS substrates based on natural materials with unique micro/nanostructures, flexible SERS substrates based on biopolymers, as well as functionalized SERS substrates, which are close to the current needs and requirements of agricultural product quality control and environmental safety assessment. The impact of herbicides on the process of photosynthesis is considered and the prospects for the application of Raman spectroscopy and SERS for the detection of herbicides are discussed.

Abstract:Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is one of the most special and important Raman techniques. An apparent Raman signal can be observed when the target molecules are absorbed onto the surface of the SERS substrates, especially on the "hot spots" of the substrates. Early research focused on exploring the highly active SERS substrates and their detection applications in label-free SERS technology. However, it is a great challenge to use these label-free SERS sensors for detecting hydrophobic or non-polar molecules, especially in complex systems or at low concentrations. Therefore, antibodies, aptamers, and antimicrobial peptides have been used to effectively improve the target selectivity and meet the analysis requirements. Among these selective elements, aptamers are easy to use for synthesis and modifications, and their stability, affinity and specificity are extremely good; they have been successfully used in a variety of testing areas. The combination of SERS detection technology and aptamer recognition ability not only improved the selection accuracy of target molecules, but also improved the sensitivity of the analysis. Variations of aptamer-based SERS sensors have been developed and have achieved satisfactory results in the analysis of small molecules, pathogenic microorganism, mycotoxins, tumor marker and other functional molecules, as well as in successful photothermal therapy of tumors. Herein, we present the latest advances of the aptamer-based SERS sensors, as well as the assembling sensing platforms and the strategies for signal amplification. Furthermore, the existing problems and potential trends of the aptamer-based SERS sensors are discussed.

Abstract:Phytohormones, as crucial regulatory factors in plant growth and development, have garnered increased interest in improving crop stress resistance. It is essential to comprehend the distribution of phytohormones in plants to assess their health status and investigate their functions. This knowledge also serves as a guide for developing and using plant growth regulators. The advancement of fluorescent probe technology, along with the wide range of fluorophores and improvements in imaging methods, has made it a successful approach for monitoring phytohormones in plants. This technique has been confirmed to be effective in plants, particularly in detecting the response of fluorescent probes to phytohormones. In this Perspective, we highlight the utility of fluorescent probes in measuring and visualizing the distribution of phytohormones in plants under external stress. However, the visualization of phytohormones with high spatial resolution and the achievement of high biocompatibility in living plants have posed significant challenges for researchers. Nonetheless, there are also many untapped opportunities in this field. This paper seeks to delve into the potential for further discussion on the subject.

Abstract:In order to guarantee food safety, preserve the environment, and protect the health of farmers and consumers, it is imperative that dangerous compounds in the agricultural sector be identified. When molecules are adsorbed on nanostructured metal surfaces, a method known as surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) amplifies Raman scattering signals. With its exact insights into molecular structures, this enhanced analytical capacity has significant implications for environmental monitoring, medical diagnostics, and materials characterization. The method is very useful for applications requiring precise molecular analysis and low-concentration detection because of its sensitivity and selectivity. The present work reviews some significant and recent literature that used the SERS method for the identification of trace fungicides, herbicides, insecticides, acaricides, and molluscicides used in the agricultural industry. The authors hope that this review will be helpful for researchers and officials to focus more on early and timely detection of hazardous substances in the agricultural industry in future studies and policies.

Abstract:Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), a variant of Raman spectroscopy, is a powerful analytical technique that uses plasmonics to obtain detailed chemical information of molecules or molecular assemblies adsorbed or attached to nanostructured metallic surfaces. It is being considered for numerous sensing applications including health, food, environmental monitoring, safety etc. Plasmonics, exploits the interaction between light and metallic nanostructures at the metal-dielectric interface. The metal-dielectric interfaces are engineered to optimize for high enhancement factors and molecular specificity with high accuracy and sensitivity. In this review we have focused on the basics of plasmonics, fundamentals of SERS, different methods adopted for fabrication of various types of SERS substrates, applications of SERS in bio-medicine, a brief description of different variants of Raman spectroscopy and a concise introduction on quantum sensing. Fundamental mechanisms of SERS and factors contributing to SERS enhancement have also been reviewed in this article. Latest developments in the field of novel SERS substrates have been explored including different kinds of plasmonic/non-plasmonic materials, different sizes, shapes, and architectures of SERS substrate to achieve high sensitivity and specificity as well as tunability or flexibility. Different forms of Raman spectroscopy have been discussed in terms of advantages and challenges of each technique. With artificial intelligence and machine learning expanding its dominance in almost every field, it is inevitable to discuss the importance of signal detection schemes and data analytics, and its implementation in the detection/quantification of analytes using SERS-based point-of-care technologies. The objective of this review is to provide a comprehensive overview of SERS by highlighting challenges and shortfalls in implementing it and providing a deeper insight of its principle, mechanism, advantages, and limitations of current technology. Different fundamental approaches are discussed, such as label-free and functional assays. We have also reviewed the main advantages and challenges of SERS-based biosensing and presented a brief outlook.

Abstract:Plant wearable detection has garnered significant interest in advancing agricultural intelligence and promoting sustainable food production amidst the challenges of climate change. Accurately monitoring plant health and agrochemical residue levels necessitates qualities such as precision, affordability, simplicity, and noninvasiveness. Here, a novel attachable plasmonic film is introduced and designed for on-site detection of agrochemical residues utilizing surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). By functionalizing a thin polydimethylsiloxane film with silver nanoparticles via controlled droplet reactions in micro-well arrays, a plasmonic film is achieved that not only maintains optical transparency for precise analyte localization but also conforms closely to the plant surface, facilitating highly sensitive SERS measurements. The reliability of this film enables accurate identification and quantification of individual compounds and their mixtures, boasting an ultra-low detection limit ranging from 10-16 to 10-13 m, with mini mal relative standard deviation. To showcase its potential, on-field detection of pesticide residues on fruit surfaces is conducted using a handheld Raman spectrometer. This advancement in fabricating plasmonic nanostructures on flexible films holds promise for expanding SERS applications beyond plant monitoring, including personalized health monitoring, point-of-care diagnosis, wearable devices for human-machine interface, and on-site monitoring of environmental pollutants.
Advances in surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy-based sensors for detection of various biomarkers

Abstract:Surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) allows the ultrasensitive detection of analytes present in traces or even single molecule levels by the generation of electromagnetic fields. It is a powerful vibrational spectroscopic method that is capable to detect traces of chemical and biological analytes. SERS technique is involved in the extremely sophisticated studies of molecules with high specificity and sensitivity. In the vicinity of nanomaterials decorated surfaces, SERS can monitor extremely low concentrations of analytes in a non-destructive manner with narrow line widths. This review article is focused on some recently developed SERS-based sensors for distinct types of analytes like disease-related biomarkers, organic and inorganic molecules, various toxins, dyes, pesticides, bacteria as well as single molecules. This study aims to enlighten the arising sensing approaches based on the SERS technique. Apart from this, some basics of the SERS technique like their mechanism, detection strategy, and involvement of some specific nanomaterials are also highlighted herein. Finally, the study concluded with some discussion of applications of SERS in various fields like food and environmental analysis.

Abstract:Plants are active contributors to the betterment of human living conditions and play a critical role in ecological systems. During the process of plant growth and development, several species such as ROS, RSS, signaling molecules, and metal ions can act as important pathogens. Additionally, heavy metal ions and pollutants can accumulate in the human body and become harmful through the food chain, making it essential to study how the distribution and amount of chemicals in plants change. Molecular fluorescent probes are powerful tools that offer high sensitivity, selectivity, reproducibility and membrane permeability, real-time in situ detection, and straightforward mechanism elucidation, and are widely used in plant imaging. This review presents a comprehensive overview of the progress in molecular fluorescent probes for sensing and imaging analytes in plants. Furthermore, future perspectives and potential applications of these fluorescent probes in plants are suggested. We believe that this review provides important insights that could inspire the development of probes with improved responsiveness for plant imaging.

Abstract:This paper reports a new chip equipped with aptamer-based sensors interfaced with a capillary microfluidics suitable for screening and detecting hormones in plant samples. The microfluidic capillary interface of the chip ensures the samples to be automatically delivered to the sensors on the chip even without any external pumps, making it potentially suitable for operation in the field or source-limited settings if a sample-preparation component is integrated on the same chip. The arrayed sensors can be functionalized with aptamers specific to different plant hormones, hence this chip can screen and identifythe hormones from unknown samples. Since currently only an abscisic acid (ABA) aptamer and a salicylic acid (SA) aptamer are identified and available, as a technical demonstration, in this research, the sensors are only functionalized with ABA aptamer and SA aptamer to evaluate the performance of this chip. Using this chip, the detection of five plant hormones (ABA, SA, auxins, cytokinins, gibberellins) in buffer and plant extracts has been demonstrated with very good specificity and high sensitivity. And the sensors can detect both ABA and SA as low as 0.1 μM. All these measurements require only 1 μl samples and could be carried out within less than 30 min. Furthermore, the sensor reusability has been evaluated by regenerating the sensors. Given its minimal external equipment operational requirement, this chip offers a suitable platform for rapid, sensitive, and inexpensive screening and identification of plant hormones in raw plant samples.
Challenges and Recent Advances in the Determination of Plant Hormones

Abstract:As small organic molecules, plant hormones play vital roles in the growth and development of global plants, but their activity is concentration dependent. Accurate determination of real time concentrations in certain plant tissues is hence the key to understand their exact functions however the lack of analytical methodology currently forms a bottleneck to acquire such information. The greatest challenge is how to locate and quantify the trace and/or ultra-trace target components from limited quantities of fresh samples or directly from living plant tissues. This has led to numerous studies and breakthroughs throughout the world, however the research progress has yet to be summarized. Thus, this review is intended to synthesize the latest progress and discuss prospective trends and potential future research in this field.
Effects of 0 . 2 % Chlorhexidine Gluconate to the Plaque Accumulation on Silk Suture Materials in Oral Mucosa : A Scanning Electron Microscope Study

Abstract:ÖZET Aim: To evaluate the effect of chlorhexidine to the plaque accumulation on silk suture by scanning electron microscope (SEM). Materials and Methods: The study included fourteen subjects. The patients were randomly divided into two groups. Group 1st, the test group, used a % 0.2 chlorhexidine gluconate; Group 2nd, the control group, used saline after the impacted third molars extraction. The sutures were removed after 7 days and kept in 70% alcohol and processed for SEM. The material was critical-point dried using dry ice method and observed in a field emission SEM at different magnifications. The contamination of the suture surfaces was scored and the Mann-Whitney U test was used for statistical analysis. Results: There were obvious differences in the amount of plaque and debris accumulated between the test and the control groups. The amount of contamination was significantly lower in the test group (P<0.01). Conclusion: SEM observation showed that the test group had less contaminated surface area than the control group. The results indicate that CHX was effective in the reduction of plaque accumulation on silk suture. Amaç: Klorhekzidin glukonatın ipek sütur materyallerinde plak birikimi üzerine etkisini SEM ile değerlendirmektir. Gereç ve Yöntem: Çalışmaya 14 kişi katılmıştır. Hastalar rasgele iki gruba ayrılmıştır. Gömülü 3. molar operasyonundan sonra, birinci grup, test grubu, % 0.2’lik klorhexidin glukonat kullandı; ikinci grup, kontrol grubu, serum fizyolojik kullandı. Sütur materyalleri 7 gün sonra alındı ve SEM işlemi için % 70’lik alkolde saklandı. Materyal dry-ice yöntemi kullanılarak kritik noktada kurutuldu. Sütur yüzeylerinin kontaminasyonu skorlandı ve istatistiksel analiz için Mann-Whitney U testi kullanıldı. Bulgular: Test ve kontrol grupları arasında plak ve debris miktarında belirgin farklılıklar olduğu gözlendi. Kontaminasyon miktarı, test grubunda belirgin şekilde daha azdı (P<0.01). Sonuç: SEM gözlemi test grubunun kontrol grubundan daha az kontamine olmuş yüzeye sahip olduğunu göstermiştir. Sonuçlar, klorhekzidinin ipek sütur materyali üzerine plak birikiminde azalmaya neden olduğunu ortaya koymuştur.
