Abstract:Objective To evaluate the clinical characteristics, diagnosis and treatment of adrenal ganglioneuroma. Methods The clinical data of 8 cases of adrenal ganglioneuromas at our hospital were reviewed retrospectively. Amang these 8 cases, 5 tumors were located in the right side while 3 were in the left side. The age was 26 to 67 years old.The mean tumor size was 5.0 cm, ranged from 2.5 cm to 9.7 cm. Results Among these 8 cases, 6 cases were performed laparoscopic adrenalectomy successfully. The other two cases were followed up without surgical intervention. The operative time was 45-120 min and blood loss was 30-450 ml without blood-transfusion. one patient whose inferior vena cava has been injured during the laparoscopic adrenalectomy and finally has been repaired with laparoscope successfully.The patients performed operations all diagnosed as adrenal ganglioneuromas by pathology. Eight cases were followed-up 3 months to 5 years. No patient has tumor recurrence. Conclusions Adrenal ganglioneuroma is a benign neurogenic tumor without specific clinic symptoms. Laparoscopic adrenalec tomy is safe and effective, however great vessels nearby must be protected during the operation.

Abstract:e22013 Background: Ganglioneuroblastoma (GNB) is a rare tumor of the sympathetic nervous system composed of both immature neuroblasts and mature ganglion cells. It has an intermediate malignant potential that lies between a low grade ganglioneuroma and a high-grade neuroblastoma and has the capability to transform into a neuroblastoma. While more information is known regarding pediatric neuroblastoma, little is known regarding the epidemiology and clinical features of GNB. To our knowledge, this is the first analysis of ganglioneuroblastoma using the National Cancer Database (NCDB) and potentially the largest and most comprehensive studies of this subtype of tumor to date. Methods: Using the National Cancer Database (NCDB), 273 patients diagnosed with ganglioneuroblastoma (ICD-0 9490/3) from 2004-2018 were identified. Kaplan-Meir analysis was used to estimate survival and log-rank tests were used to compare survival between stage groups. Results: The median age of diagnosis for patients with ganglioneuroblastoma was found to be 4 years. Girls were affected more commonly than boys, with a male to female ratio of 1.6/1. A majority of patients were white (77.7%) and African American (13.6%), followed by minor representations from multiple other races. The most common primary site of ganglioneuroblastoma was the thorax (40.5%), followed by the abdomen (35.7%). A minority of patients (14%) had distant metastases at diagnosis. At the time of disease presentation, 56% of patients were classified as stage I, 9.2% as stage II, 18.4% as stage III and 16.3% as stage IV. Stages I, II, and III conferred an excellent prognosis with a 99.2% survival rate as compared to patients with stage IV disease who had a survival rate of 65.2% (p < 0.001). Nearly all patients underwent surgery of the primary site, with the most common approach being local excision. Around one quarter of patients received chemotherapy while very few patients required radiation or immunotherapy. Conclusions: A number of unique findings help to distinguish ganglioneuroblastoma from the more common variant neuroblastoma. GNB seems to affect slightly older children (median age of 4 years) compared to a median age of 22 months in neuroblastoma. Interestingly, GNB was found to occur significantly more frequently in girls. On the contrary, neuroblastoma has been reported to be slightly more common in males than females. Additionally, the majority of ganglioneuroblastomas arise in the thorax. This is in comparison to neuroblastomas, of which the large majority arise in the abdomen, specifically in the adrenal glands. Stage IV GNB carries a significantly worse prognosis than stages I-III, with a survival rate of 62.5% which is similar to stage IV neuroblastoma.

Abstract:Objective To elucidate the clinical and pathologic characteristics of adrenal ganglioneuroma. Methods The data of 13 patients (5 men and 8 women) with adrenal ganglioneuroma diagnosed pathologically were reported and discussed with review of the relevant literatures. The patient mean age was 38 years. Seven patients had left adrenal ganglioneuroma;5 had the tumor on the right;and 1 ,on both sides. Six patients with asymptomatic mass were detected on routine B-ultrasound,6 had upper abdominal discomfort or intermittent pain,and 1 had hypertension. The blood testing showed no abnormality. The adrenal imaging demonstrated solid space-occupying lesions. The mean greatest diameter of the tumors was 6. 7 cm. Twelve patients underwent open surgical excision of the adrenal tumors; and 1 underwent laparoscopic resection. Results The operations were completed successfully. All patients recovered soon without complications. Pathology showed that adrenal ganglioneuroma contained mature ganglion cells, Schwann cells, neurites and sustentacular fibers. The adrenal ganglioneuroma was partially composed of immature and atypical cells in 3 cases,had partially cystic degeneration in 2 cases,and had partially calcification in 1 case. The mean follow-up period was 43 months (range, 4 - 116 months). Until now no recurrence and metastasis of tumor were detected. Conclusions Adrenal ganglioneuroma is a rare benign tumor and has special pathologic features. The surgical resection has an excellent effect.

Abstract:Objective:To summarize the diagnosis and treatment of primary adrenal ganglioneuroma.Methods: Analysis the clinical data about diagnosis and treatment of adrenal ganglioneuroma in 19 cases from October 1992 to January 2011,and review the relevant literature.Results;12 of 19 patients with adrenal ganglioneuroma were performed by open resection,7 patients were underwent laparoscopic adrenalectomy.Pathologic results confirmed the diagnosis of adrenal ganglioneuroma,they were followed up for 2 months to 14 years,6 patients died during follw-up.4 of 6 were died of heart disease,1 was died of accident and the last one was died of cerebral hemorrhage. The prognosis of adrenal ganglioneuroma is adrenal ganglioneuroma good and there was no recurrence and metastasis related to this disease.Conclusions:Adrenal ganglioneuroma was a benign neurogenic tumor,which was difficulty to identify from the type of resting pheochromocytoma in clinical practice.Patients with clinical symptoms and abnormal laboratory tests should obey the requirement of pheochromocytoma during preoperative preparation. Laparoscopic resection may be used as first-line treatment.Open surgery can be performed for some patients with ill-defined tumors.
Spinal ganglioneuroma: a rare and challenging tumor in the pediatric population

Abstract:Background: "Spinal ganglioneuroma" is a rare entity of neuroblastic tumors, frequent among children, that has been sparsely reported in articles involving both the pediatric and adult populations. These tumors mostly arise from the sympathetic ganglia located in the paravertebral region, near the intervertebral foramina of the spine. This makes their extension into the spinal canal possible but quite rare, in a dumbbell fashion, producing radicular or medullary symptoms. We provide an extensive review of the pediatric cases found in the literature; while reporting a challenging case we have recently got to treat at the CHRU de Brabois in Nancy, France. Methods: We searched PubMed's database for articles and abstracts related to "spinal ganglioneuromas," from inception until June 1, 2024. We combined every case among patients under 18 years of age and divided them between the different spinal areas. We excluded those that originated from outside of the spine. We particularly focused our attention on the thoraco-lumbar region, which involved our case report, since the surgical management is completely different from other regions of the spine. Results: As per June 1, 2024, 21 patients aged between 3 and 17 years were identified with "spinal ganglioneuromas," with a predominance of females (81%). The thoracic region of the spine seems to be the area of predilection for these tumors (42.85%), although some have been found in the cervical (9.5%), cervico-thoracic (4.76%), thoraco-lumbar (19.04%), lumbar (19.04%), and sacral (4.76%) regions. Discussion: Our specific case included long-date abdominal pain and recent progressive paraparesis as the main symptoms, with radiological manifestations of renal atrophy and hydronephrosis, due to the compression and complete displacement of the kidney, as well as scoliosis. To our knowledge, this combination of symptoms has never been seen with spinal ganglioneuromas before in the pediatric population, given the gigantic size of the tumor, and its significant extension to both the spinal canal and the retroperitoneal space, which is quite uncommon. Conclusion: Spinal ganglioneuromas are very rare, benign lesions, that should be included in the differential diagnosis of dumbbell tumors that can cause in the pediatric population, alongside neurological symptoms in the limbs and back pain, thoracic, abdominal, and even urinary symptoms.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: The Transatlantic Australasian Retroperitoneal Sarcoma Working Group (TARPSWG) conducted a retrospective study on the disease course and clinical management of ganglioneuromas.BACKGROUND: Ganglioneuromas are rare tumors derived from neural crest cells. Data on these tumors remain limited to case reports and single-institution case series.METHODS: Patients of all ages with pathologically confirmed primary retroperitoneal, intra-abdominal, and pelvic ganglioneuromas between January 1, 2000 and January 1, 2020 were included. We examined demographic, clinicopathologic, radiologic characteristics as well as clinical management.RESULTS: Overall, 328 patients from 29 institutions were included. The median age at diagnosis was 37 years with 59.1% of patients being female. Symptomatic presentation comprised 40.9% of cases, and tumors were often located in the extra-adrenal retroperitoneum (67.1%). At baseline, the median maximum tumor diameter was 7.2 cm. One hundred sixteen (35.4%) patients underwent active surveillance while 212 (64.6%) patients underwent resection with 74.5% of operative cases achieving an R0/R1 resection. Serial tumor evaluations showed that malignant transformation to neuroblastoma was rare (0.9%, N=3). Tumors undergoing surveillance had a median follow-up of 1.9 years, with 92.2% of ganglioneuromas stable in size. With a median follow-up of 3.0 years for resected tumors, 84.4% of patients were disease-free following resections while recurrences were observed in 4 (1.9%) patients.CONCLUSION: Most ganglioneuromas have indolent disease courses and rarely transform to neuroblastoma. Thus, active surveillance may be appropriate for benign and asymptomatic tumors particularly when the risks of surgery outweigh the benefits. For symptomatic or growing tumors, resection may be curative.

Abstract:Objectives Ganglioneuroma is a rare, benign neurogenic tumor arising from the sympathetic ganglia. In this report, we reviewed and summarized the clinical features, treatment, and prognosis of a posterior mediastinal ganglioneuroma. Case Here, we report on a 29-year-old man referred to us with transient pain in the right side of the chest, lasting for three days. Physical examination revealed no abnormalities. The results of routine laboratory tests were within the normal ranges. Thoracic spinal magnetic resonance imaging showed a well-defined, solid mass in the right paravertebral region at the T5-T8 level, measuring 7.5 cm × 4.2 cm × 1.5 cm. To accurately locate the lesion during surgery, O-arm intraoperative imaging was used in conjunction with the Stealth Station navigation system. The tumor was completely excised and no related complications occurred. The tumor was an encapsulated mass with a solid, homogenous, grayish-tan cut surface. Histopathological examinations confirmed that the mass was a ganglioneuroma. Conclusions Ganglioneuroma is a rare, benign tumor. Prior to treatment, a careful imaging evaluation is necessary in order to obtain an accurate diagnosis. A definitive diagnosis can be made by histological examination. En bloc resection is the preferred treatment for ganglioneuroma as it has an excellent prognosis.

Abstract:Gangliocytomas occurring in the sellar region are extremely rare. We examined a cohort of these tumors to examine their clinical presentations and prognoses. Between January 2000 and December 2012, 23 patients were diagnosed with sellar region gangliocytomas in Huashan Hospital. These patients were retrospectively reviewed for medical histories, endocrinological examinations, preoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), pathological findings and follow-ups. Endocrinological tests revealed elevated prolactin (PRL) levels in 10 cases (43.5%) and elevated growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) levels in 9 cases (39.1%). Scattered ganglion cells admixed with adenomatous components were observed in 16 cases (69.6%). In the remaining 7 cases (30.4%), only fragments with ganglion cells dispersed in the fibrillar matrix without adenohypophyseal components were detected. Immunohistochemistry revealed PRL-positive adenomas in 6 cases (26.1%) and GH-positive adenomas in 8 cases (34.8%). The average follow-up period was 4.2 years (range: 1-12.7 years). Gross total resection was achieved in 20 cases (87.0%). One patient recurred five years after tumor resection (4.3%). One patient died of acute myocardial infarction six years after operation. Gangliocytomas located in the sellar region may represent a unique immunopathological entity. The surgical results and prognoses of the gangliocytomas were comparable with those of pituitary adenomas.
Laparoscopic adrenalectomy in the treatment of adrenal ganglioneuroma

Abstract:Objective To evaluate the feasibility of laparoscopic adrenalectomy in the treatment of adrenal ganglioneuromas.Methods The clinical data of 12 cases of adrenal ganglioneuromas undergoing laparoscopic adrenalectomy between February 2002 and August 2010 were reviewed retrospectively.Results None of them had endocrine function.The average long diameter of ganglioneuromas was 6.5 cm ( range:1.5 - 16.8 cm).Ten tumors were resected through retroperitoneal approach with an average long diameter of 6.0 cm and another two through transperitoneal approach with 7.5 and 10.7 cm in size respectively.Three tumors surrounded renal pedicle and one adhered to kidney. The average operative duration was 144 minutes,average blood loss 194 ml and average postoperative hospitalization stay 5.4 days.None had local recurrence and distant metastasis during a mean follow-up period of 45 months.Conclusion Laparoscopic adrenalectomy is both safe and feasible for adrenal ganglioneuromas if an appropriate approach is chosen and renal pedicle well-protected..

Abstract:Ganglioneuromas (GNs) arise from the Schwann cells, ganglion cells, and neuronal tissues, and are extremely rare, slow-growing, benign tumors. GN has usually grown very large when it is diagnosed since no specific clinical symptoms or laboratory findings indicating GN are available, especially when it occurs in the retroperitoneal space. Total resection of the tumor is the recommended treatment.
Composite Pheochromocytoma/Paraganglioma-Ganglioneuroma: A Clinicopathologic Study of Eight Cases with Analysis of Succinate Dehydrogenase

Abstract:Ganglioneuromas represent the most well-differentiated spectrum of neoplasia arising from the sympathetic nervous system, while neuroblastomas represent the most poorly differentiated counterpart, and ganglioneuroblastomas represent intermediate stages of differentiation. Small series of cases have documented the co-occurrence of ganglioneuroma with a pheochromocytoma (Pheo)/paraganglioma (PGL) component. We report the clinicopathologic features of eight such cases, diagnosed between 2003 and 2015 with a mean follow-up of 22 months (1–47), which were evaluated for syndrome associations, SDHB expression, and clinical outcome. Mutations of the succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) complex subunits (A, B, C, D, and SDHAF2) have been implicated in predicting metastatic behavior and in identifying possible paraganglioma syndromes. The proliferative index was calculated by manual quantification of Ki-67-positive cells at selected hot-spots using ImageJ (NIH). In our series, composite Pheo/PGL-ganglioneuromas predominantly involved the adrenal gland (Pheo 7, PGL 1). The cases had an equal gender distribution (males 4, females 4), with a mean age at diagnosis of 67 years (range 53 to 86 years), an average size of 5.2 cm (range 2 to 8.2 cm), an average weight of 49.3 g (7.8 to 144.7 g, n = 6), and the majority were functionally active (7 of 8, 88%). The mean Ki67 proliferation rate was 2% (range 0.3 to 3%), and all cases retained SDHB expression (8/8, 100%). No patient (0/8, 0%) developed metastatic disease on follow-up. One patient had a retroperitoneal composite PGL-ganglioneuroma in the setting of neurofibromatosis type 1. No recurrent disease or other associations were identified. In our study, composite Pheo/PGL-ganglioneuromas predominantly affected the adrenal gland in older patients, showed no loss of SDHB, and no disease recurrence was identified.

Abstract:Ganglioneuroblastoma (GNB), predominantly observed in children, is an uncommon malignant tumor in adults, with established treatment protocols notably lacking. The present study details the case of a 20‐year‐old woman who presented with a left adrenal gland mass, identified during a physical examination. Additionally, an unidentified mass was noted near the renal hilum in the preoperative evaluation. Following thorough preoperative preparation, both the primary adrenal gland mass and the renal hilar mass were surgically removed. The procedure concluded successfully. Pathological analysis confirmed that the left adrenal mass was a GNB and identified the renal hilar mass as a metastatic extension. Postoperative examination revealed a new formation at the original surgical site, later verified as a postoperative scar. Through the publication of a case report and extensive literature review, the present study aims to enhance our understanding of this condition, providing valuable diagnostic, therapeutic and post‐recovery references for this rare adult disease.

Abstract:Background Adult‐ and adolescent‐onset neuroblastomas are rare, with no established therapy. In addition, rare pheochromocytomas may harbor neuroblastic components. This study was designed to collect epidemiological, diagnostic and therapeutic data in order to better define the characteristics of malignant peripheral neuroblastic tumors (MPNT) and composite pheochromocytomas (CP) with MPNT. Procedure Fifty‐nine adults and adolescents (aged over 15 years) diagnosed with a peripheral or composite neuroblastic tumor, who were treated in one of 17 institutions between 2000 and 2020, were retrospectively studied. Results Eighteen patients with neuroblastoma (NB) or ganglioneuroblastoma (GNB) had locoregional disease, and 28 patients had metastatic stage 4 NB. Among the 13 patients with CP, 12 had locoregional disease. Fifty‐eight percent of the population were adolescents and young adults under 24 years of age. The probability of 5‐year event‐free survival (EFS) was 40% (confidence interval: 27%–53%). Conclusions Outcomes were better for patients with localized tumor than for patients with metastases. For patients with localized tumor, in terms of survival, surgical treatment was the best therapeutic option. Multimodal treatment with chemotherapy, surgery, radiotherapy, and immunotherapy‐based maintenance allowed long‐term survival for some patients. Adolescent‐ and adult‐onset neuroblastoma appeared to have specific characteristics associated with poorer outcomes compared to pediatric neuroblastoma. Nevertheless, complete disease control improved survival. The presence of a neuroblastic component in pheochromocytoma should be considered when making therapeutic management decisions. The development of specific tools/resources (Tumor Referral Board, Registry, biology, and trials with new agents or strategies) may help to improve outcomes for patients.

Abstract:Background: Ganglioneuroma (GN) is a rare, benign tumor that originates from neural crest cells and can potentially affect any anatomical site within the sympathetic nervous system. Typically, GNs are more frequently reported in children and young adults, with a slightly higher prevalence in females. We are reporting a rare case of a giant lumbar spine ganglioneuroma by outlining the clinical presentation, radiological finding, management, and outcome. Case Description. A 37-year-old female presented with low back pain radiating to the right lower limb for few years. Neurological examination revealed bilateral lower limb hyperreflexia (+3). Lumbar spine CT and MRI revealed a right paravertebral soft tissue lesion with heterogeneous signal intensity and enhancement at L1 to L3. The patient underwent complete resection of the lesion via a retroperitoneal approach. The surgery was uneventful. The histopathological sections were suggestive of mature ganglioneuroma. She was discharged in stable condition with follow-up at neurosurgery clinic. Conclusion: Giant ganglioneuromas are rare, benign tumors of sympathetic neurons. Complete surgical resection is the most effective therapeutic option for ganglioneuroma to avoid recurrence. Given the benign nature of ganglioneuroma, chemotherapy and radiotherapy tend to have a limited role following surgical resection.
Mixed Gangliocytoma-Pituitary Adenoma: A Systematic Review of Diagnostic Features, Clinical Management, and Surgical Outcomes

Abstract:Objective Mixed gangliocytoma-pituitary adenomas (MGPAs) are very rare sellar neoplasms. Contemporary understanding of their natural history, clinical characteristics, optimal management strategies, and prototypical outcomes remains poorly understood. Methods Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines, PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane were searched to include studies of patients with histologically confirmed mixed gangliocytomas. Clinical features, management strategies, and outcomes were analyzed. Results Thirty three studies reporting 78 patients met study criteria and were included. Median age at diagnosis was 47 years, with a female predominance (71%). Common presenting symptoms included headache (49%), acromegaly (43%), and visual disturbance (20%). Growth hormone and prolactin were the most commonly elevated hormones. Magnetic resonance imaging identified local infiltration in 86% of patients, most frequently in the cavernous sinus. Transsphenoidal resection was the primary treatment strategy, which achieved a gross total resection in 43%. Postoperative pituitary function was normal in 92%. Median follow-up was 21 months, during which time 14% of patients required secondary intervention for persistent hormonal hypersecretion. Following these secondary interventions and as of last follow-up, radiographic and/or biochemical control was confirmed in all patients, with an overall survival rate of 97%. Conclusions MGPAs are rare, slow-growing tumors that present with a combination of endocrinological and neurological symptoms. MGPAs are optimally managed with transsphenoidal resection, which appears to achieve favorable rates of symptomatic relief and local control despite the high incidence of local infiltration and relatively low attendant gross total resection rate.

Abstract:Ganglioneuroblastoma (GNB) is a rare neurogenic tumor with a predilection for extracranial sites. Its primary intracranial occurrence is anecdotal, with less than ten cases reported in pediatric literature. We report two cases of this unusual entity. The first was a 1-year-old boy who presented with a progressive scalp swelling that radiologically appeared to be a mesenchymal tumor. The tumor was resected completely, and its histopathological examination was suggestive of a pigmented GNB. The clinico-radiological presentation and melanin pigmentation of the tumor were unique features of the case. The second case was a 7-year-old girl who presented with left hemiparesis and raised intracranial pressure due to a large right parietal intraparenchymal tumor that histologically proved to be a GNB. The child succumbed to disease progression a month after undergoing near-total resection of the tumor. Analysis of our cases in the light of a literature review reveals that pediatric intracranial GNBs have diverse clinico-radiological features and can easily be confused for commoner pathologies in both intra- and extra-axial locations.

Abstract:Catecholamine producing tumours of childhood include neuroblastic tumours, phaeochromocytoma and paraganglioma (PPGL). PPGL and neuroblastic tumours can arise in similar anatomical locations and clinical presentations can overlap resulting in diagnostic challenges. Distinguishing between these tumour types is critical as management and long-term surveillance strategies differ depending on the diagnosis. Herein we describe two clinical cases and illustrate key considerations in the diagnostic work up of a neuroblastoma versus PPGL for patients presenting with adrenal, pelvic, and retroperitoneal masses in childhood.

Abstract:Background: Ganglioneuroma (GN) is ranked by the International Neuroblastoma Pathology Classification as a benign tumor. It can occur anywhere along the sympathetic nerve chain and surgical excision is the treatment of choice. Case presentation: An 18-year-old female patient sought medical assistance after 6 months of constant dorsal and back pain radiating from the thoracic region to the right abdominal flank. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a solid nodular lesion with heterogeneous post-contrast enhancement and lobulated contours, centered on the right foramina of D12-L1, with a projection to the intracanal space, which compressed and laterally displaced the dural sac and had a right paravertebral extension between the vertebral bodies of D11 and superior aspect of L2. Ganglioneuroma was diagnosed using immunohistochemical analysis. It was decided to use a surgical approach in two stages: robot assisted for the anterior/retroperitoneal mass and a posterior hemilaminectomy/microsurgical approach to attempt total resection, avoiding the traditional anterior thoracoabdominal surgical incision and optimizing the patient's postoperative outcomes. No postoperative adverse events were noted, and the patient was discharged on postoperative day 5. Conclusion: This retroperitoneal GN presentation was peculiar because it originated at the D12 nerve root, which extended to the retroperitoneal space and inside the spinal canal. We hope that our case report can assist future decisions in similar circumstances.
Clinicopathologic features and surgical efficacy of retroperitoneal ganglioneuroma

Abstract:Objective:To explore the clinical diagnosis and treatment methods and curative effect of retroperitoneal ganglioneuromaMethods:The clinical data of 32 cases of retroperitoneal ganglioneuroma admitted to Peking University International Hospital from Apr 2015 to May 2022 were retrospectively analyzed, and their clinical characteristics, surgical efficacy and prognosis were discussed.Results:Of the 32 patients with retroperitoneal ganglioneuroma, 17 had no obvious clinical symptoms, 7 complained abdominal distension and pain, 6 had lower back pain, and 2 had abdominal mass. Tumors were located near the adrenal and renal regions in 18 cases, on both sides of the spine below the kidneys in 11 cases, and in the pelvis in 3 cases. tumors were single in 28 cases, multiple in 4 cases.Tumors were surrounded by major blood vessels in 12 cases. R 0 or R 1 resection was carried out in 27 cases, and palliative R 2 resection in 5 cases, combined organ resection in 6 cases, and piecemed resection in 8 cases. The maximum tumor diameter was (13.2±4.9)cm, the intraoperative blood loss was 500 (50-6 000 ml), and 6 cases suffered from major postoperative complications. Between patients with tumors encircling and encroaching major blood vessels or not, there were significant differences in age, intraoperative blood loss, R 2 resection rate, and pieceneal resection rate between the two groups ( t=2.44, P=0.021; Z=2.37, P=0.018; χ2=4.57, P=0.033; χ2=11.38, P=0.001). There was no recurrence in patients with R 0 or R 1 resection. Conclusions:The prognosis of complete resection of retroperitoneal ganglioneuroma is good .Major blood vessels encroachment of the tumor often leads to incomplente (R 2) resection.
Pediatric pituitary neuroendocrine tumors-a 13-year experience in a tertiary center

Abstract:IntroductionPediatric pituitary neuroendocrine tumor is a rare condition, and despite previous research focusing on this specific group, the main factors influencing the surgical cure rate have not been identified.MethodsWe conducted a single-center retrospective study on pediatric pituitary neuroendocrine tumor patients who visited Peking Union Medical College Hospital between 2010 and 2023. We collected data on their clinical characteristics, imaging features, surgical outcomes, and follow-up information. Additionally, we used multiple-factor logistic regression to investigate the factors affecting the surgical cure rate of pediatric pituitary neuroendocrine tumor.Results232 patients were diagnosed with pediatric pituitary neuroendocrine tumors, with a higher incidence in females. The most common type was ACTH-secreting adenoma (90/232), followed by prolactin-secreting adenoma (63/232), and growth hormone-secreting adenoma (41/232). The majority of pediatric adenomas were macroadenomas (139/232), and some tumors were associated with cystic changes or hemorrhage (58/232), while a few exhibited invasion of the cavernous sinus (33/232). The results of the multivariate analysis indicated that the different hormone secretion types, macroadenoma or the presence of cystic changes or hemorrhage were not significant risk factors for the cure rate after the first surgery. However, the invasion of the cavernous sinus was found to be an important factor influencing the postoperative cure rate. Most pediatric pituitary neuroendocrine tumors with cavernous sinus invasion were macroadenomas, and some displayed characteristics of refractory pituitary neuroendocrine tumors, with some patients experiencing irreversible complications after surgery.ConclusionPediatric pituitary neuroendocrine tumors are complex, and the postoperative cure rate is particularly poor for tumors with cavernous sinus invasion. Although macroadenoma itself does not significantly impact the postoperative cure rate, it is still recommended to diagnose and treat early to avoid unnecessary surgery or surgical complications.
