Abstract:This study investigated the influence of alkali and alkaline earth metals (AAEM) and the role of acid pretreatments in the production of sugars during solvent liquefaction of lignocellulosic biomass using 1,4-dioxane and water as solvents. The present study found that removal of AAEM by acid washing/water rinsing did not enhance sugar production during solvent liquefaction of pretreated switchgrass nearly to the extent observed for fast pyrolysis nor did it inhibit lignin decomposition, suggesting that AAEM play less of a role in determining product yields in solvent liquefaction. On the other hand, acid infusion greatly enhanced the yields of sugars during solvent liquefaction, presumably because the strong acid catalytically promoted both the depolymerization and the dehydration of polysaccharides. The main monomeric sugars formed were levoglucosan, glucose, and xylose. Levoglucosan was the predominant sugar when 1,4-dioxane was the solvent, whereas glucose was the major sugar when water was the solvent. When 1,4-dioxane and water were cosolvents, partial hydrolysis of levoglucosan to glucose was observed. The maximum yield of the total sugars (19.8 wt %) from AI switchgrass occurred when 9:1 mixtures of 1,4-dioxane and water were used as cosolvents. In addition, the sugars were more stable in the 1,4-dioxane and water mixture compared to water alone.

Abstract:Three pretreatments, hydrogen peroxide pretreatment (HP), ammonia fiber expansion pretreatment (AFEX), and hydrogen peroxide presoaking prior to AFEX (H-AFEX), were employed to improve enzymatic digestibility of corn stover. Effects of varied chemical loadings on solid recovery, composition changes, and enzymatic hydrolysis by different methods were investigated and compared. The influences of the lignin solubilization and xylan removal from treated corn stover on subsequent enzymatic hydrolysis were assessed. The highest fermentable sugar yields of HP, AFEX, and H-AFEX processes following enzymatic hydrolysis at 15 FPU/g glucan for 72 h were 370.9, 497.8, and 527.6 g monosaccharides per kilogram of untreated dry biomass, respectively. For AFEX and H-AFEX, solubilization of 1520% of the lignin and removal of 510% of the xylan resulted in close to optimal enzymatic digestion. As a result, a certain amount of lignin solubilization and xylan removal were necessary for an effective pretreatment for bioethanol production.

Abstract:Pretreatment of lignocellulosic materials is a prerequisite to facilitate the disruption of the natural recalcitrance of their carbohydrate–lignin shield and to allow enzymes to easily access the crystalline cellulose surfaces. Recently, pretreatment of ionic liquids (ILs) has been widely studied as a promising pretreatment technique; however, it is too expensive to be commercialized. In this study, an efficient acid-catalyzed aqueous IL pretreatment process was developed to optimize the total sugar conversion of pretreated biomass and to reduce IL usage. The experimental results demonstrated that the total sugar conversion was raised to 92.7 % with the synergistic effects of IL (1,3-dimethylimidazolium dimethylphosphate, [MMIM]DMP) and dilute hydrochloric acid (HCl) under pretreatment conditions of 110 °C for 2 h, compared to the conversion of only 27.3 % obtained with untreated corn stover. Moreover, the addition of the inorganic acids, especially HCl, to the IL pretreatment was found to not only significantly destroy the crystalline structure of cellulose in corn stover, promoting the conversion of cellulose and hemicellulose to monomeric sugars, but also provide an opportunity to reduce the usage of expensive IL solvents.

Pretreatment of Biomass with Ionic Liquid to Improve Saccharification Yield

Abstract:The effect of pretreating biomass(bagasse/eucalyptus) with ionic liquids(ILs) EmimAc and AmimCl has been explored by assessing the saccharification yield. Factors including temperature, time and solid-to-liquid ratio have been investigated. The results indicate that two ILs produce the best results for the two kinds of biomass at 140 ℃ when the solid-to-liquid ratio is 1∶15. For EmimAc, the optimum pretreatment time is 12 h for eucalyptus, and 4 h for bagasse, respectively. For AmimCl, the optimum pretreatment time is 14 h for eucalyptus, and 8 h for bagasse, respectively. The saccharification yields of EmimAc pretreated eucalyptus and bagasse are 13.931 and 3.886 times those of traditional methods, respectively. For AmimCl, the saccharification yields are imoroved to 4.665 and 2.835 times, respectively. The results show that EmimAc exhibits a better pretreatment effect than AmimCl.
The Effect of Different Pretreatment Methods on Hydrolysis of Cellulose and Semi-cellulose of Arundo donax

Abstract:Arundo donax is a new energy grass with high yield,strong adaptability,with wide distribution and high cellulose content and can be selected as the raw material for producing fuel ethanol.Four different pretreatment methods were tested to study the effect on hydrolysis of cellulose and semi-cellulose of Arundo donax.The results showed that the total hydrolysis rate of Arundo donax treated by acid catalytic reaction under higher temperature was up to 47.91% and the lignin content could be decreased by 12.99%.There was no significant difference between other three methods and their total hydrolysis rate was about one-thirds of that treated by acid catalytic reaction under higher temperature.

Abstract:Lignocellulosic biomasses are considered the most suitable feedstocks for sustainable bioenergy generation in the future owing to their versatility, availability, and low cost. Pretreatment is considered an essential step for removing lignin and solubilizing hemicellulose to increase the sugar yield of cellulase hydrolysis of pretreated biomass because pretreatment may disrupt the crystalline structure of cellulose. To investigate the effect of ultrasound on ionic liquid-hydrochloric acid pretreatment with rice straw, this study adopted an hydrochloric acid–catalyzed process in 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride and 1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride aqueous solutions under ultrasound irradiation to treat the rice straw at a medium-low temperature. The effects of temperature, acid concentration, and time on the production of reducing sugar were studied; moreover, the benefits of ultrasound during pretreatment were also explored according to the changes of enzymatic saccharification, components, morphology, crystallinity, and chemical structure. The results showed that temperature, acid concentration, and time have significant effects on enzymatic hydrolysis, and the production of reducing sugar, cellulose conversion, and delignification was increased by 20.13–28.96%, 31.69–35.23%, and 18.06–19.33%, respectively. On the other hand, the results of Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis also demonstrate that ultrasound can promote the destruction of morphology, chemical structure, and crystallinity of rice straw in the hydrochloric acid–catalyzed process in ionic liquid aqueous solutions. (1) Temperature, acidity, and processing time had significant effects on the sugar yield of rice straw pretreated with US-IL-HCl. (2) Compared with treatment without ultrasound, the sugar yield, cellulose conversion rate, and delignification increased in ultrasonic-assisted pretreatment samples. (3) Ultrasound-assisted pretreatment can further improve the damage of the surface morphology and chemical structure of rice straw, reduce the crystallinity of cellulose, and improve the enzymatic hydrolysis effect.

Abstract:This study aims to establish a natural cellulosic biomass pretreatment process using ionic liquid (IL) for efficient enzymatic hydrolysis and second generation bioethanol. The IL 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium Chloride/FeCl3 ([Bmim]Cl/FeCl3) was selected in view of its low temperature pretreatment ability and the potential of accelerating enzymatic hydrolysis, and it could be recyclable. The yield of reducing sugars from sugarcane residue pretreated with this IL at 80 oC for 1 h reached 46.8% after being enzymatically hydrolyzed for 24 h. Sugarcane residue regenerated were hydrolyzed more easily than that treated with water. The fermentability of the hydrolyzates, obtained after enzymatic saccharification of the regenerated sugarcane residue, was transformed into bioethanol using Candida shehatae. This microbe could absorb glucose and xylose efficiently, and the ethanol production was 0.38 g/g glucose within 30 h fermentation. In conclusion, the metal ionic liquid pretreatment in low temperature shows promise as pretreatment solvent for natural biomass.

Abstract:Lignocellulosic biomass as a renewable and valuable resource has been a very active research area during recent years. Ionic liquids (ILs) are an attractive approach for the pretreatment of lignocelluloses. In this work, a series of pyrrolidinium-based ionic liquids were prepared simply and were investigated for the pretreatment of corn stalk at 90 °C for 30 min. The characteristics of regenerated lignin and cellulose-rich materials were determined by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis. Both ILs and ILs/H2O were studied. Notably, 10.17% lignin based on the original corn stalk was recovered with [Hmp]Cl-pretreatment; 21.34% and 15.83% reducing sugar based on the original corn stalk were observed during pretreatment with [Hmp]HSO4/H2O and [Hmp]Cl/H2O pretreatment, respectively; 80.54% of reducing sugar was obtained based on the cellulose-rich materials with [Hmp]Cl/H2O-pretreatment. Also, the glucose and cellobiose yields were 73.82% and 8.64%, respectively.

Abstract:Pretreatment is very important for the efficient production of value-added products from lignocellulosic biomass. However, traditional pretreatment methods have several disadvantages, including low efficiency and high pollution. This article gives an overview on the applications of ionic liquids (ILs) and IL-based solvent systems in the pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass. It is divided into three parts: the first deals with the dissolution of biomass in ILs and IL-based solvent systems; the second focuses on the fractionation of biomass using ILs and IL-based solvent systems as solvents; the third emphasizes the enzymatic saccharification of biomass after pretreatment with ILs and IL-based solvent systems.

Noninvasive prediction of the exercise-induced elevation in left ventricular filling pressure in post-heart transplant patients with normal left ventricular ejection fraction.

Abstract:OBJECTIVES At present, there are conflicting data on the ability of echocardiographic parameters to predict the exercise-induced elevation of left ventricular (LV) filling pressure. The purpose of the present study was to validate the ratio of early diastolic transmitral (E) to mitral annular velocity (e') obtained at peak exercise in its capacity to determine the exercise-induced elevation of pulmonary capillary wedge pressure (PCWP) and to reveal new noninvasive parameters with such capacity. METHODS Sixty-one patients who had undergone heart transplantation with normal LV ejection fraction underwent simultaneous exercise echocardiography and right heart catheterization. RESULTS In 50 patients with a normal PCWP at rest, exercise E/e' ≥8.5 predicted exercise PCWP ≥25 mmHg with a sensitivity of 64.3% and a specificity of 84.2% (area under the curve [AUC]=0.74). A comparable or slightly better prediction was achieved by exercise E/peak systolic mitral annular velocity (s') ≥11.0 (sensitivity 79.3%; specificity 57.9%; AUC=0.75) and exercise E/LV systolic longitudinal strain rate ≤-105 cm (sensitivity 78.9%; specificity 78.6%; AUC=0.87). Combined, exercise E/s' and exercise E/e' resulted in a trend toward a slightly more precise prediction (sensitivity 53.6%; specificity 89.5%; AUC=0.78) than did either variable alone. CONCLUSIONS Exercise E/e', used as a sole parameter, is not sufficiently precise to predict the exercise-induced elevation of PCWP. Exercise E/s', E/LV systolic longitudinal strain rate or combinations of these parameters may represent further promising possibilities for predicting exercise PCWP elevation.
A Single Step Fractionation of Lignocellulose in Aqueous Solutions of a Carboxylic Acid-Functionalized Ionic Liquid

Abstract:This paper presents the features of corn stover pretreated under mild conditions in aqueous solution of a carboxylic acid functionalized ionic liquids 1-carboxymethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (IL-COOH). The results revealed that such pretreatment selectively removed hemicelluloses in corn stover, resulting in cellulose- and lignin-rich pulps with moderate enzymatic reactivity. The corn stover pretreated in 40 wt% IL-COOH at 120 degrees C for 4 h demonstrated increases in cellulose and lignin contents from 37.9% to 55.6%, and 21.1% to 26.5%, respectively, while decrease in the content of hemicellulose from 24.4% to 9.34%. Subsequent enzymatic hydrolysis of the pulps achieved from pretreatment in 50 wt% IL-COOH aqueous solution at 105 degrees C for 4 h produced 0.32 g.g(-1) glucose and 0.45 g.g(-1) total reducing sugars. The recyclability and reusability of IL-COOH in the pretreatment system was also investigated.

Abstract:Lignocellulose is the most abundant biomass for sustainable production of biofuels and chemicals, and the pretreatment is essential for efficient saccharification. In this work, the low-cost hydroxylammonium ionic liquids (HILs) with different base-acid molar ratios (BAMRs) were prepared to pretreat non-crop biomass, Jerusalem artichoke stalk (JAS), and the effect of HIL structure on pretreatment performance was evaluated via lignin removal, saccharification, solvent recycling, and structural changes of JAS and regenerated lignin. With BAMR increasing, the lignin removal and saccharification yield increased, while polysaccharide recovery changed a little. When JAS was pretreated at 160 °C for 6 h using ethanolammonium acetate (EOAA) with BAMR varied from 1 to 5 (EOAA(5:1)), the lignin removal increased from 52.3 to 80.7%, glucose yield increased from 81.1 to 93.2%, and glucose yield was still 90% in the fifth use of EOAA(5:1). The spectra of FT-IR and 2D-HSQC NMR indicated that JAS lignin was mainly composed of syringyl (S) and guaiacyl (G) units and a trace amount of p -hydroxyphenyl (H) unit. During the pretreatment, the connection between lignin and hemicellulose was disrupted. The predominant structure (β- O -4, β-β, and β-5) was well preserved in the regenerated lignin, while the S/G ratio was decreased from 3.12 to 2.78. Finally, microbial production of 2,3-butanediol (2,3-BD) and acetoin from JAS residue was carried out, and 92.3 g/L 2,3-BD and 14.4 g/L acetoin were obtained after 78 h of fermentation. This work could contribute to the improvement of lignocellulose digestibility and the production of bio-based chemicals from lignocellulosic biomass.

Abstract:Pretreatment of lignocellulose is a vital step for biological production of bio-chemicals and bio-fuels. In this work, the pretreatment of Jerusalem artichoke stalk (JAS) by hydroxylammonium ionic liquids was evaluated based on pretreatment efficiency including polysaccharide recovery and enzymatic digestibility, and influence of ionic liquids on 2,3-butanediol fermentation using Bacillus subtilis. The results showed ethanolammonium acetate (EOAA) was efficient in JAS pretreatment, and maximum cell density was increased 25% when EOAA concentration was not greater than 0.3 mol/L in medium, while the total concentration of acetoin and 2,3-butanediol was 15% greater than the control at 0.1 mol/L EOAA. After the pretreatment under optimized conditions of 170 °C for 5-h and liquid-solid ratio of 18, about 87% cellulose and 75% hemicellulose were recovered, and glucose yield of 64% and xylose of 66% were obtained after 24-h hydrolysis of JAS residue by cellulase (15 FPU/g) with solid loading of 10 wt%.

Abstract:Extrusion process using 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ([EMIM]Ac) in co-solvent, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), was conducted to improve the pretreatment effect on the enzymatic saccharification of pussy willow (<i>Salix gracilistyla</i> Miq.). The use of a twin screw extruder capable of continuous processing increased the solid loading to 50% in [EMIM]Ac and its co-solvent DMSO. The water-soluble fraction was increased by increasing the [EMIM]Ac amount in co-solvent and the extrusion temperature but decreasing the screw rotating speed and solid loading. The surface morphologies of the extruded product showed remarkable disruption of the cell wall structures and fibrillation with increasing amounts of [EMIM]Ac in co-solvent. With increasing [EMIM]Ac amount in co-solvent and extrusion temperature and with decreasing screw rotating speed and solid loading, the crystalline structure of cellulose was more disrupted, resulting in the increase in saccharification yield. The highest yield of glucose and xylose was 99.0% and 99.5%, respectively, from the pretreated products using only [EMIM]Ac under solid loading of 15% at 160 °C extrusion temperature and 5 rpm screw rotating speed. The initial saccharification rate was faster in the pretreated product precipitated in alcohol and acetone than in water.

Abstract:To evaluate senile gait patterns in octogenarians and nonagenarians, we provided a standardized questionnaire on gait disabilities to 153 elderly subjects over 88 years of age. Subjects represented a relatively healthy subgroup of non-institutionalized residents who participated in a gerontological survey of all inhabitants of the city of Leiden who were 85 years or older. Of the 142 subjects who responded to this questionnaire, 87 persons (61%) claimed distinct diseases as a cause of gait impairment. Of the remaining 55 persons, 42 received a standardized gait assessment. Gait was classified as completely normal in 25 persons (18% of all responders), whereas in three other persons gait could not reliably be classified as either normal or abnormal. A wide spectrum of clear gait abnormalities-mainly with ataxic features-was encountered in the remaining 14 persons (10%). It is concluded that some elderly subjects have a mainly ataxic gait disturbance which seems unrelated to the presence of distinct diseases. Although additional investigations might still reveal underlying pathology in these subjects, their gait impairment may represent the "idiopathic senile gait disorder'. In addition, a relatively high number of very old community residents have a completely normal gait.

Abstract:Using Ionic Liquids (ILs) to convert lignocellulosic biomass (LCB) to high-value products has emerged as an environmentally benign process. The present study reports the potential of recovering reducing sugars and lignin from sugarcane bagasse (SCB) using two novel ILs, N, N-Diisopropylethylammonium hydrogen sulfate (IL-1) and N, N-Diisopropylethylammonium perchlorate (IL-2). The process parameters—reaction temperature, time, and IL concentration have been optimized using the Response surface methodology (RSM). At optimum reaction conditions, a reducing sugar yield of 53.4 ± 0.25% and 55.93 ± 0.7%, and lignin recovery of 28.92 ± 0.23% and 31.35 ± 0.45% were obtained for IL-1 and IL-2 , respectively. The effect of ILs-based pretreatment on SCB was investigated by using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), proton nuclear magnetic resonance ( 1 H-NMR), powder X-ray diffraction (P-XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis. Enzymatic hydrolysis of the IL-1 and IL-2 pretreated SCB has shown a 3.9 and 4.7-fold increase in saccharification efficiency compared to raw SCB. The compositional changes of ILs during recycling have been analyzed using 1 H-NMR analysis. The IL reuse and recyclability studies demonstrate that both recycled ILs could be utilized till the fourth cycle.

Abstract:Lignocellulosic and algal biomass feedstocks are the most plentiful and cost-effective renewable sources of biofuels (sugar, bioethanol, biodiesel, and bio-oil), value-added chemicals (organic compounds), and advanced materials (hydrogels and composites). The lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose complex's recalcitrance, which leads to ineffective conversion into valuable compounds, is one of the most significant challenges in biomass valorization. Some ionic liquids (ILs) have been shown to be efficient decomposers of lignocellulosic and algal biomass. In reality, ILs offer a unique green alternative compared to harmful volatile organic solvents and severe process conditions. Enhanced productivity in the conversion of biomass feedstocks could result from advancements in IL-based pretreatment technologies. The capability of the different types of ILs for conversion, as well as the impact of different properties and operating parameters, are comprehensively reviewed and discussed in this paper. The known methods for the dissolution of three main components of lignocellulosic and algal biomass with ILs are also described. Furthermore, the challenges to be addressed when utilizing IL for biomass pretreatment and processing on a commercial scale are highlighted. The significant promise of ionic liquids for this objective is anticipated to stimulate research and lead to considerable technological advancements in this field.

Pretreatment of corn cob in [EMIM][OAc] and [EMIM][OAc]/ethanol (water)

Abstract:High cost and high viscosity of ionic liquid restricted its commercial application in pretreatment of lignocellulose. Water and ethanol were used as additive in [EMIM][OAc] to pretreat corn cob at moderate temperature (< 100 °C). It was found that enzyme hydrolysis (EH) sugar yield was increased with the increase of IL content. The largest EH sugar yield of 68.8% was obtained when pure IL was used. However, for [EMIM][OAc]/ethanol, the EH sugar yield as high as 66.9% was gained when the IL content was 80%, which was comparable to that for pure IL pretreatment. In addition, Kamlet-Taft parameter was calculated to characterize the polarity solvency of binary liquid phase, to illustrate the underlying reason for the increase of EH sugar and the lignin removal. Finally, to demonstrate the crystalline and microstructure change after pretreatment, XRD and SEM were performed for the raw materials and the pretreated samples.
Effect of ionic liquid-containing system on betulinic acid production from betulin biotransformation by cultured Armillaria luteo - virens Sacc cells

Abstract:The aim of this study is to develop an ionic liquid-containing system for efficient production of betulinic acid by cultured cells Armillaria luteo - virens Sacc ZJUQH100-6. Several parameters affecting betulinic acid formation in the IL-containing system were investigated. The addition of [EMIM][BF 4 ] in hexane-containing reaction medium gave rise to better betulinic acid formation in comparison with other ILs used. The optimal concentration of IL in IL-containing co-solvent system is 50% (v/v). As a co-substrate, butanol is found to be useful for intracellular betulin-28-monooxygenase synthesis during the whole phase. The concentrations of substrate and resting cells have been found to exert a significant effect on betulinic acid. Moreover, the reaction time in this IL-containing system was less than that in the conventional one. The effect of the constructed IL-containing system on cell membrane structure was comparatively observed. Under the developed IL-containing system, the highest yield of product observed was 11.14% at 18 h, higher than that in monophase aqueous one ( P < 0.05), whereas the activity of monooxygenase showed the same variation as betulinic acid formation.
Selective Separation and Recovery of the Lignin from Lignocellulosic Biomass Using Ionic Liquid

Abstract:Lignocellulosic biomass represents a potentially key and sustainable source for transformation into biofuels and other commodity chemicals. However, efficient means of separating and depolymerising the hard components are required. The use of ionic liquids (ILs) in biomass pretreatment has attracted significant attention as promising green solvents for its effectiveness at decreasing biomass recalcitrance. In this study, an efficient pretreatment method using the low-cost IL 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium acesulfamate [BMIM]Ace and organic solvents for the extraction of lignin and recovery of carbohydrate-enriched materials (CEMs) from Eucalyptus. The lignin was recovered from the IL by precipitation with acetone, allowing the IL to be recycled. The results showed a synergy effect with exceeding 89.6% of the CEMs recovery and 14.1% of the lignin obtained. It was found that the presence of some organic solvents have affected the extraction efficiency, probably due to the difference of dielectric constants of the organic solvents. The regenerated ionic liquid showed good retention of structure and properties. The purity of the lignin fractions were characterized by high-performance anion exchange chromatography (HPAEC). Moreover, the lignin fractions were characterized with Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR). The recovered CEMs can be serving as a valuable source for enzymatic saccharification. These results indicates a potential approach in further optimization of the choice of low-cost ILs and organic solvents systems for the efficient utilization of the lignocellulosic biomass, and all constituents can be fully recovered and further processed.
