Abstract:We report a novel on-chip approach for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) using a plasmonic slot waveguide. The Raman signal is excited via free-space excitation and is collected by the waveguide. A significant improvement of the signal-to-background-ratio (SBR), as compared to the case of back-scattered Raman spectroscopy with waveguide-mode excitation, is demonstrated using a silicon nitride plasmonic slot waveguide with a 7-mm access waveguide. The flexible adjustment of the incident angle in free space and modification of waveguide geometry enables the further optimization of the pump-to-Stokes conversion efficiency. The combination of high SBR and long access waveguide allows the integration with additional photonics devices (sources, filters, spectrometers) on the same chip.
Hybrid plasmonic grating slot waveguide with high field enhancement for an on-chip surface-enhanced Raman scattering sensor

Abstract:We design and theoretically investigate a surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensor based on the hybrid plasmonic grating slot waveguide. The sensor is formed by combining a dielectric deep slot waveguide and a metallic grating slot waveguide. The proposed sensor exhibits a high field enhancement with a maximum enhancement factor of 7580.9 at the wavelength of 785 nm, revealing that the electric field in such hybrid plasmonic grating slot waveguide can be extremely strengthened. To better characterize the performance of the sensor in the SERS application, the total normalized volumetric enhancement factor (TNVEF) is proposed, which is determined by both the |E|4-approximation-based volumetric field enhancement and Raman scattered light collection efficiency. The TNVEF is utilized to characterize the influences of the structural parameters on the sensor and further optimize the sensing structure. Such on-chip SERS sensor can be integrated with a micro-laser and a micro-multiplexer on a photonic platform to realize an all-integrated on-chip SERS detection system.

Abstract:Surface enhanced Raman scattering（SERS）is an efficient technique to detect low concentration molecules.In this work,periodical silicon nanowires（Si NWs）integrated with metal-insulator-metal（MIM）layers are employed as SERS substrates.Laser interference lithography（LIL）combined with reactive ion etching（RIE）is used to fabricate large-area periodic nanostructures,followed by decorating the MIM layers.Compared to MIM disks array on Si surface,the SERS enhancement factor（EF）of the MIM structures on the Si NWs array can be increased up to 5 times,which is attributed to the enhanced electric field at the boundary of the MIM disks.Furthermore,high density of nanoparticles and nanogaps serving as hot spots on sidewall surfaces also contribute to the enhanced SERS signals.Via changing the thickness of the insulator layer,the plasmonic resonance can be tuned,which provides a new localized surface plasmon resonance（LSPR）characteristic for SERS applications.

Abstract:Two-dimensional crystals-based surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates are a research hot spot in the realm of chemistry and biology. Herein, a novel hybrid substrate based on AuNPs/GaTe/Au-film is proposed and fabricated for SERS activity. Finite-difference time-domain numerical simulations demonstrate that the plasmonic coupling in the hybrid structure, particularly the LSPs coupling of AuNPs and Au-film, promotes an enhanced electric field and consequently, greatly enhances the Raman activity. Impressively, the enhancement factor of 3 × 10 5 and the limiting detection concentration of 10 −14 M have been achieved for the rhodamine 6G molecules, which are equivalent to the best results achieved from the patterned graphene substrates. Due to its simple structure, cost-effectiveness, good uniformity, reproducibility, and stability, it is expected that such a SERS substrate will open up a new way toward the ultrasensitive detection of molecules.
Nasal septal surgery: is routine follow-up necessary?

Abstract:Abstract An audit project was undertaken to appraise the outcome of 95 cases of septal surgery over a 12-month period, taking into account the subjective alteration of symptoms, appearances at anterior rhinoscopy and complications. Seventy-three patients (76.8 per cent) attended the follow-up clinic three to six months (median four months) after surgery. There was an improvement in short-term nasal breathing and in the clinical appearance of the septum in 84.9 and 96.9 per cent respectively; a complication rate of 10.9 per cent and an overall satisfaction rate of 81.3 per cent were also noted. These results support those of other reported series and suggest that routine follow-up of uncomplicated cases of septal surgery is unnecessary.
Design of a Surface Plasmon Resonance Sensor Based on Grating Connection

Abstract:Nowdays, the study of measurement of the biological field focuses on the research of improving surface plasmon resonance (SPR) in the fields of integration and detection sensitivity. We designed a kind of grating connected surface plasmon resonance sensor. Theoretically, we analyzed the wave vector and the effective refractive index relations with the diffraction grating structure. Then we obtained the nanoparticles enhancement SPR structure with a resolution 10 times higher than that of traditional SPR sensors. Also, we used the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) analysis and simulation which showed that it was obvious with coupling effect by the nanoparticles enhancement SPR structure that the reflectance spectral bandwidth results validated the structure significantly which improved the sensitivity. Experimental results showed that the dynamic response of the designed sensor reached 10 −6 RIU (refractive index unit). This study has the certain significance to long-distance and special sensing applications.

Abstract:A surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)-active microfluidic device with tunable surface plasmon resonances is presented here. It is constructed by silver grating substrates prepared by two-beam laser interference of photoresists and subsequent metal evaporation coating, as well as PDMS microchannel derived from soft lithography. By varying the period of gratings from 200 to 550nm, surface plasmon resonances (SPRs) from the metal gratings could be tuned in a certain range. When the SPRs match with the Raman excitation line, the highest enhancement factor of 2 x 107 is achieved in the SERS detection. The SERS-active microchannel with tunable SPRs exhibits both high enhancement factor and reproducibility of SERS signals, and thus holds great promise for applications of on-chip SERS detection.

Abstract:In 1997, the discovery of single molecule-surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SM-SERS) rekindled broad interests owing to its ultrahigh enhancement factor up to the 1014-1015 level. However, regretfully, the advantage of SM-SERS with an ultralow detection limit has not yet been fully utilized in commercialized applications. Here, we report a strategy, which we name confined-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, in which the overall Raman properties can be remarkably improved with in situ-formed active nanoshell on the surface of silver or gold nanoparticles. The nanoshell can confine and anchor molecules onto the surface of plasmonic nanoparticles and avoid desorption from hot spots so that the "on and off"blinking effect can be eliminated. It is the first time the single-molecule detection of analytes with super sensitivity, high stability, and reproducibility based on gold nanoparticles has been realized. In addition, this strategy is suitable for SERS detection in diverse molecule systems, including biomedical diagnosis, catalytic reaction, etc.

Abstract:Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) detection technique has gained much attention as a powerful analytical tool in these years. Nevertheless, the attention was mainly focused on the efficient scattering platform by structuring metals themselves, leading to the more complex platforms and simultaneous the higher cost. Herein, a new and simple strategy to prepare large-area, low-cost, high-performance SERS substrate is introduced. Ultra-thin semiconductor silicon (Si) film is used as the functional layer for the metallic nano-particles based meta-surface. During the SERS sensing process, the emergence of Si layer is observed to provide three key contributions: 1) to produce a maximal enhancement factor (EF) ~470% than that of the bare meta-surface, 2) to keep a higher spectral stability for the Raman signal, 3) to physically interdict the contact between the metal and the molecule. Moreover, the Si film's thickness is down to the scale close to electron's Bohr radius, indicating efficient electronic oscillations for the semiconductor material under electromagnetic excitation. The charge transfer behaviors between the molecules and the Si layer and metal nano-particles can also emerge. These findings could pave new insights on the surface-enhanced spectroscopy and hold applications on the high-performance, large-area, low-cost SERS sensing.

Abstract:A dual-resonance surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) chip which also serves as a localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) refractive index sensor is proposed. The dual-resonance SERS chip can simultaneously enhance excitation and Stokes lines for Raman signals detection in a broad wavelength region with virtually no limitation. Thus, it is especially useful for Raman detection at long wave numbers and hyper Raman. The great performance of this chip relies on the highly independent tunability of the two localized plasmonic resonances from the optical to the nearinfrared region and the strict "hot spot" match in space for both resonant wavelengths. Furthermore, Raman signals of polymethyl-methacrylate (PMMA) from 500 cm(-1) to 3300 cm(-1) are measured in the experiments and an obvious superiority can be seen compared to a single-resonance SERS chip. In an addition, by using the subradiant magnetic dipole resonance, the LSPR refractive sensor gives a high sensitivity of 577 nm/RIU and high figure of merit (FoM) of 14.2. The experimental results are consistent with the simulated results. This dual-functional sensing chip opens a route for dual-modality detection of the concentration of some specific molecules.

Abstract:A hybrid integration of nanoporous gold with silicon nitride waveguide has been realized for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) at 633-nm wavelength. The SERS signal is excited through 580-nm-thick T-shape suspended waveguides and collected through an objective lens. Raman spectra for different mesa width at either transverse electric (TE) or transverse magnetic (TM) mode are measured and compared. The localized surface plasmon resonance of the nanoporous gold can result in a waveguide and polarization-dependent SERS enhancement. The presented miniaturized SERS chips can work from visible to near-infrared wavelength and a wide application prospect could be expected. Abstract:Hyperbolic metamaterials (HMMs), supporting surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs), and highly confined bulk plasmon polaritons (BPPs) possess promising potential for application as surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates. In the present study, a composite SERS substrate based on a multilayer HMM and gold-nanoparticle (Au-NP) layer was fabricated. A strong electromagnetic field was generated at the nanogaps of the Au NPs under the coupling between localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) and a BPP. Additionally, a simulation of the composite structure was assessed using COMSOL; the results complied with those achieved through experiments: the SERS performance was enhanced, while the enhancing rate was downregulated, with the extension of the HMM periods. Furthermore, this structure exhibited high detection performance. During the experiments, rhodamine 6G (R6G) and malachite green (MG) acted as the probe molecules, and the limits of detection of the SERS substrate reached 10−10 and 10−8 M for R6G and MG, respectively. Moreover, the composite structure demonstrated prominent reproducibility and stability. The mentioned promising results reveal that the composite structure could have extensive applications, such as in biosensors and food safety inspection.

Abstract:We design and investigate a hybrid plasmonic nanofocusing waveguide (HPNW) for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) tweezer applied to the on-chip Raman detection and optical trapping. The input mode from the dielectric waveguide can be well coupled into the surface plasmon polariton (SPP) mode of plasmonic waveguide. During this procedure, the HPNW can compress the mode field, thereby significantly enhancing the spot electric field inside the gold slot, where the SERS can be excited coincided with the optical trapping of sample particles. Meanwhile, the Raman scattered light can be collected by the HPNW itself, without other external devices. The electric field enhancement factor, optical trapping potential and the collection efficiency of scattered light are utilized to study and characterize the performance of the SERS tweezer. The simulation results indicate that the optimized SERS tweezer can trap a 20 nm diameter sample particle with only 20 mW excitation power. As far as we know, this is the first time that the SERS tweezer combining both the SERS detection and optical trapping is proposed in an on-chip photonic waveguide.

Abstract:Dual subwavelength Ag gratings with a small gap of about 15 nm are demonstrated to provide a huge additional SERS enhancement, more than 10(3) fold in scattering efficiency over normal SERS on an Ag film due to the strong plasmon coupling, which is simulated by theoretical calculation. The simulation also shows the advantages of the coupled two-layer gratings over the one-layer grating for SERS measurement. Our study provides a promising and feasible way of structure design for extremely sensitive substrates of SERS.

Abstract:Quantifying formidable multiple coupling effects involved in Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is a prerequisite for accurate design of SERS probes with superior detection limit and uniformity which are the targets for trace substance detection. Here, combining theory and experiments on novel 3D periodic Au/SiO2 hybrid nanogrids, we successfully develop a generalized methodology of accurately designing high performance SERS probes. Structural parameters and symmetry, Au roughness, and polarization are quantitatively correlated to intrinsic electromagnetic field (EMF) enhancements from surface plasmon polariton (SPP), localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), optical standing wave and their couplings theoretically, which is experimentally verified. The hexagonal SERS probes optimized by the methodology successfully detect 5*10^-11 M Hg ions in water, and 2.5*10^-11 M R6G with 40 times improvement of detection limit, an enhancement factor of 3.4*10^8 and uniformity of 5.56%, which results from the extra Au roughness - independent 144% contribution of LSPR effects excited by SPP interference waves as secondary sources, beyond the conventional recognization. This study opens up a pioneering way not only for providing the generalized design principles of SERS probe structures with high performance but for accurately designing their structures with particular purposes such as greatly improved detection limit and uniformity which are very significant for trace substance detection.

Abstract:The emerging development of sensing technology initiates innovative sensors achieving low-cost to facilitate practical realization. An interesting crush of the work is to propose a simple structural sensor and to analyze the different schemes of the metal coating by stimulated emission of Raman scattering (SERS) intensification. For the first time, we propose a simple geometrical photonic crystal fiber refractive index based sensor (PCF-RIBS) with three different Schemes A, B, and C, i.e., gold (A) layer-coated surface plasmon resonance (SPR) based D-type PCF-RIBS; Au with titanium-di-oxide (TiO2) layer-coated SPR D-type PCF-RIBS; and Au + TiO2 grating-coated localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) D-type PCF-RIBS. Characterizing the three different Schemes A, B, and C using finite element method simulation shows, a maximum wavelength sensitivity of 48,000 nm/RIU, 52,000 nm/RIU and 75,000 nm/RIU, respectively, for a wide range of analyte-refractive index from 1.33 to 1.45 and operates in the wavelength range from 500–2000 nm. Of all the Schemes, Scheme C is found to excite a relatively larger number of surface-plasmons. Eventually, it exhibits improved sensing performances compared to SPR based Schemes A and B. Consequently, it would turn out to be an appropriate candidate to detect a broad range of biological and chemical sample detection.

Abstract:Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) with unique molecular vibrational fingerprints for identifying analytes provides an effective spectroscopic approach for the detection of trace molecules in biomedical/analytical fields. Although a great amount of efforts has been devoted to developing various SERS substrates with hierarchical micro/nanostructures, challenges remain in completely concentrating the target molecules within a sensitive area and thereby enhancing detection sensitivity. Here, we report trace molecular detection using superhydrophobic microcrater array as surface-enhanced Raman substrate (SMA-SERS). The hierarchically ordered microcrater array with plasmonic nanoparticle clusters is quickly obtained by the two-step process of femtosecond laser texturing and magnetron sputtering. The resultant substrates with hierarchical micro-/nanostructures show excellent superhydrophobicity with a contact angle above 150° and satisfactory plasmonic nanostructures with the easily attainable Raman signal enhancement factor of ~4.82 × 108. The signals on the SMA-SERS maintain uniformity with a relative standard deviation of <15%. These findings manifest that the SMA-SERS is an extraordinary strong candidate for obtaining high-quality and reliable SERS, facilitating a widespread use of SERS for practical applications.

Abstract:Recent advances in near-field technology with an ultrahigh spatial resolution breaking optical diffraction limit, make it possible to further identify surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) enhancement theories, and to monitor the SERS substrates. Here we verify the electromagnetic enhancement mechanism for SERS with a close-up view, using scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy. The array of metal-insulator-metal (MIM) subwavelength structures is studied, in which the field enhancement comes from the strong coupling between gap plasmon polariton and surface plasmon polariton modes. The near-field optical measurements reveal that SERS enhancement factor (EF) varies from one MIM subwavelength unit to another in a finite array. Besides the enhancement of isolated unit, the loss exchange phenomenon in strong coupling with a large Rabi splitting can give rise to an additional enhancement of more than 2 orders of magnitude in periodic arrays and close to 3 orders of magnitude in finite arrays. The SERS EF of the array composed of only 5 units is demonstrated to yield the best SERS performance. Our near-field optical measurements show evidence that finite-size structures embodied with strong coupling effect are a key way to develop practical high-performance SERS substrates.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) plasmonic metamaterials have become a trend in the application of nanophotonic devices. In this paper, a convenient and inexpensive method for the design of 3D multilayer plasmonic metamaterials is constructed using a one-step self-shielded reactive-ion-etching process (OSRP) and a thermal evaporation system, which provides an efficient and low-cost method for the preparation of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrates. The near-field enhancement of the 3D plasmonic metamaterials provides highly efficient electromagnetic resonance, and highly sensitive and uniform SERS sensing capabilities. The SERS detection results of rhodamine B (Rh. B) and rhodamine 6G (R6G) on this substrate show that the detection limit could reach 10–13 mol/L, and the signal could give expression to excellent uniform stability. The results show that high sensitivity and high robustness SERS substrates can be prepared with high efficiency and low cost.
