Abstract:The rapid growth of environmental pollution and the destruction of eco-systems force every individual economy to focus on environmentally friendly economic development. This research explores economic growth, energy use, foreign direct investment, agriculture, industrialization, and urban population growth with environmental sustainability proxied as CO2 emissions from 1971 to 2018. Econometric methods are employed for different purposes as the unit root for the stationary check. ARDL determines the long-run relationship, while the Decoupling Index examines the growing speed of variables and CO2 emissions, and VECM has been used for short- and long-run causalities. The study's findings confirm the long-run impact of all environmental pollution variables as ECM-1 is negatively significant. The short-run causality test shows CO2 emissions because of economic growth (GDP = > CO2 ≠ GDP), energy use (ENU = > CO2 ≠ ENU), and foreign direct investment (FDI = > CO2 ≠ FDI) at a 1% level. In contrast, CO2 emissions are not the Granger cause of GDP, ENU, and FDI. Economic growth, energy use, and foreign direct investment will increase CO2 emission, not vice versa. The study findings suggest that governments should move toward adopting green technology by implementation of green fiscal policies.

Abstract:Land use activities mainly for economic and agricultural purposes have converted one third to one half of our planet's land surface into urban expansion and agricultural practice, which has had significant impacts on natural ecosystems, food production, and environmental quality, attracting the attention of researchers and policymakers. Consequently, land use is emerging as a fundamental issue in global environmental change and sustainable development. This study represents an addition to the prevailing literature by investigating the asymmetric impacts of land-use and land-cover changes on environmental quality in Pakistan using time series data from 1961 to 2016. Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions were deemed a dependent variable (a proxy for environmental quality), whereas built-up land, cropland, water bodies, and grazing land were considered independent. A nonlinear ARDL bound testing technique (NARDL) was used to investigate dynamic cointegration among the study variables. Moreover, this study used the BDS test and structural break unit root test to confirm nonlinearity and stationarity of the data set. The results confirm that the variables exhibit asymmetrical co-integration. There is a symmetric unidirectional causation, running from built-up land and grazing land towards CO2 emissions with coefficients of 10.570 and 17.045, respectively. Furthermore, asymmetric causality shows that any positive shocks to built-up land (6.134) and water bodies (20.335) significantly cause CO2 emissions. Similarly, a negative shock to grazing land (16.470) also causes CO2 emissions. By contrast, a neutral effect was found between cropland and CO2 emissions.

Abstract:Carbon dioxide emission and GHGs are associated with fossil fuels which have adverse effects on the environment. The key intention of this paper was to determine the asymmetric effect of CO2 emission on expenditures, trade, FDI, and renewable energy consumption in Pakistan. An asymmetrical technique (nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag) was employed to validate the constructive and adverse relation among variables. Furthermore, the Granger causality test was also used to verify the unidirectional association amid variables. Study outcomes revealed that the adverse shocks of renewable energy consumption exposed expressively to upsurge CO2 emission in the short-run dynamics. Conversely, constructive shocks of renewable energy consumption display an adversative association with CO2 emission. Furthermore, the decreasing trend in foreign direct investment tends to impede the detrimental effects of CO2 emission. Additionally, the variable expenditures also create the non-eco-friendly impacts and manifest the positive linkage through CO2 emission. Trade possesses statistically insignificant linkage with environmental degradation. The results also disclose that positive as well as negative variations in the foreign direct investment expose to degrade the environmental eminence. Long-run results suggest the direct association between downward trend in renewable energy consumption and CO2 emission signifying that the pollution level decreases, and the upward trend in renewable energy consumption, however, demonstrates insignificantly positive effects. The results also disclose that positive as well as negative variations in the FDI lead to degrade the CO2 emission. Moreover, it is found that the expenditures soar the issue of pollution again in the long run. Finally, the consequence of trade on CO2 emission is adverse, as the outcome suggests. In order to improve the environmental policies for sustainable growth, the study provides direction toward a sustainable environment by reducing carbon dioxide emission.

Abstract:Pakistan's economic development and budgetary resilience are greatly influenced by globalization, CO 2 emissions, and oil prices, necessitating a deep understanding of these factors. This study aims to investigate how factors like carbon dioxide emissions (CO 2 ), oil prices, and economic globalization have affected economic growth in Pakistan from 1980 to 2021. This study uses the nonlinear autoregressive distributional lag approach to examine how asymmetric effects of economic globalization, oil prices, and carbon dioxide emissions (CO 2 ) have affected Pakistan's economic growth. Further, the direction of these relationships is determined using Granger causality tests, and the model stability is evaluated by CUSUM and CUSUMQ tests. The results show that GDP is impacted inequitably by economic globalization, oil costs, and CO 2 emissions. Oil price increases have a considerable beneficial effect on GDP, whereas growing CO 2 emissions have the opposite effect. GDP and economic globalization are strongly correlated, and as globalization declines, economic production suffers. Based on the results, it is recommended that Pakistan's government should develop strategies to adapt to globalization's changing conditions, including renewable energy, deforestation control, and population planning for long-term climate change solutions.

Abstract:Primarily, the current study seeks to explore the influence of financial development, economic growth, trade openness, non-renewable and renewable energy utilization on carbon dioxide (CO2) emission in Pakistan from 1990 to 2017. The findings of structural break unit root tests indicated that a few variables are stationary at the level and others integrated at the first difference. The bound F-test and Johansen cointegration tests confirmed the evidence that a long-run relationship exists among concerned variables. The long-run results explore that financial development and renewable energy penetration significantly accelerate the environmental quality, while economic growth, non-renewable energy utilization, and trade openness are responsible for deteriorating the environmental quality. The results from the short-run estimate explore that non-renewable energy utilization and trade openness significantly reduce the environmental quality while renewable energy sources are beneficial for environmental quality. Moreover, the current study discovered the unidirectional Granger causality relationship from economic growth, trade openness, non-renewable and renewable energy penetration to carbon emission in Pakistan. The outcomes of this study provide some insightful policy suggestions to overcome the detrimental effect of environmental degradation.

Abstract:The purpose of the research is to provide light on the network of connections that occurs between tourism spending, gross domestic product, foreign direct investment, trade balance, and CO 2 emissions. The purpose of the research is to scrutinize data from 1990 to 2022 in Pakistan using the nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag model in order to evaluate the hypothesis of asymmetric associations. The research findings discovers that the torism spending, foreign direct investment, trade balance, and gross domestic product are negatively significant with CO 2 emissions in short-run. However, the tourism spending, and foreign direct investment are positively significant to CO 2 emissions in the long-run. Surprosingly, the rerearch didn't find any asymmetric relationship between trade balance, foreign direct investment, tourism expenditure, gross domestic product, and CO 2 emissions both in short- and long-run. Policymakers and stakeholders may utilize the study's results to boost green economic growth and minimize CO 2 emissions.

Abstract:The traditional literature has explored various factors including, but not limited to, trade openness, financial development, energy consumption, foreign direct investment, globalization, and per capita income that significantly contribute to carbon emissions. However, the current study identifies aggregate domestic consumption spending as a novel driver of carbon dioxide, employing the data for the period of 1973-2018 in Pakistan. To this end, we develop the theoretical framework to illustrate the link between aggregate domestic consumption spending and carbon dioxide emissions and deploy autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL), asymmetric ARDL, and the threshold non-linear ARDL (NARDL) techniques. The results of the ARDL method suggest that only in the short run, aggregate domestic consumption spending significantly affects carbon dioxide emissions. Furthermore, the findings of the NARDL approach reveal that the positive and negative shocks significantly deteriorate and ameliorate the environmental quality by increasing and decreasing the pollution, respectively, in the short and long run. Even though the outcome of the threshold NARDL technique supports the results of the aforementioned approaches, the novelty of the current study is to find out the threshold in aggregate domestic consumption spending, which carries a significant role in determining the carbon emissions in both periods. Besides, we infer that fossil fuels energy and trade openness also degrade the Pakistani climate by boosting atmospheric pollution. Additionally, the application of the asymmetric Granger causality test validates the results by asserting the casual relationship between aggregate domestic consumption spending and carbon dioxide emissions. Based on the results, we suggest the authorities to start to promote the deployment of green products publicly to obtain green and sustainable development.

Abstract:Environmental degradation as a consequence of modern technological change is still an unresolved global issue. As countries grow, the cost of this progress has to be born in the form of a rise in carbon emissions. In Pakistan, energy consumption has increased from 34 Million MTOE in 1992 to 98 MTOE in 2019 due to oil and gas-based production. Likewise, the average temperature has risen during the last 50 years in Pakistan. Based on IPAT and Climate change models, this study estimates the two equations model to analyze the impact of economic growth, foreign direct investment, population density and population in urban agglomeration on carbon emissions by using ARDL bound testing methodology. The co-integration relationship was found in both stages with consistency. This study proved the Environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) theory in the case of Pakistan. The more insightful finding is that the large bulge area of the curve between carbon emissions and economic growth highlights that the negative impact of today’s economic growth on the environment will remain for a much longer period in the future. It is also found that carbon emissions are responsible for increasing average temperature resulting in a climatic change in Pakistan. These empirical results indicate that there is a dire need to revisit the growth strategy to achieve sustained economic growth.
Exploring the asymmetric effects of urbanization and trade on CO2 emissions: fresh evidence from Pakistan

Abstract:Over the past few decades, rapid or unplanned urbanization has been a major problem for developing countries, affecting the environment very badly. Pakistan is also the fifth most vulnerable country in terms of environmental impact from socio-economic activities. Mostly, this type of research has been conducted across countries. So, this study intends to analyze the role of urbanization in energy consumption, economic growth, trade, and technology in carbon emissions by evaluating data from 1985 to 2021 in the context of Pakistan. Autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) and non-linear autoregressive distributed lag (NARDL) with Granger causality assessment are employed to experimentally examine the variables' short and long-term associations. The ARDL result demonstrates that carbon dioxide (LCO2) emissions are increased by energy consumption (LEC) and technology (LTech), while they are decreased by economic growth (LEG) and trade (LT). In NARDL, rising and falling urbanization (LU) lead to increased carbon emissions, but insignificantly. Ascending LEC leads to increased emissions, whereas descending LEC leads to reduced emissions in the context of short and long-term asymmetry. Yet, the opposite is true in the case of trade: a rise in LT decreases emissions significantly, whereas a fall in LT increases emissions insignificantly. This paper highlights the importance of international trade for a country facing these challenges. This means that LT is at the forefront of emission-reducing technology. A Granger causality analysis results show that LU and LTech are two critical determinants of LCO2 emissions. Diagnostic tests ensure the model's reliability, ensuring that it could potentially be used without adverse intent. The research concludes that in order to minimize carbon dioxide emissions, the government should encourage the adoption of low-carbon technology through international trade (the exchange or import of low-carbon products) and implement policies tailored to urbanization and energy demand.

Abstract:In this study, the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) is hypothesized to investigate the relationship between CO2 emission, economic growth, energy consumption, trade liberalization and population density in Pakistan with yearly data from 1971 to 2008. The cointegration analysis using Auto Regressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) bounds testing approach is incorporated. The results support the hypothesis both in short-run and long-run and inverted U-shaped relationship is found between CO2 emission and growth. Interestingly we found trade support the environment positively and population contributes to environmental degradation in Pakistan. The energy consumption and growth are the major explanatory variables which contribute to environmental pollution in Pakistan. Moreover, the time series data analysis is used and the stability of variables in estimated model is also assessed.

Abstract:This study investigates the intricate relationship between energy consumption, economic growth, and environmental quality in Pakistan from 1990 to 2022, highlighting the critical role of natural resources rent (NRR) and renewable energy consumption (REC) in shaping carbon dioxide emissions. The study aims to understand how these variables interact and influence each other, particularly focusing on the impact of NRR and REC on CO2 emissions within the context of Pakistan's economic growth and energy consumption patterns. Given the country's rapid economic growth and increasing energy demands, there is an imperative need to investigate how these factors influence environmental quality, particularly CO2 emissions employing the autoregressive distributed lag approach with structural breaks, we analyze the long‐term interactions and causality among NRR, REC, energy use (EU), gross domestic product (GDP), and CO2 emissions. Our findings demonstrate that while NRR and REC negatively correlate with CO2 emissions, a positive association exists between EU, GDP growth, and emissions. These results underscore the potential of strategic environmental policies, aligned with Sustainable Development Goals 7, 13, and 8, to foster sustainable development pathways in Pakistan. By comparing this study's approach with existing methodologies, we highlight our study's unique contribution to the literature, offering policymakers a robust foundation to formulate effective strategies for balancing economic growth with environmental sustainability.

Abstract:The paper is an effort to fill the gap in the energy literature with a comprehensive country study of Pakistan. We investigate the relationship between CO2 emissions, energy consumption, economic growth and trade openness in Pakistan over the period of 1971–2009. Bounds test for cointegration and Granger causality approach are employed for the empirical analysis. The result suggests that there exists a long-run relationship among the variables and the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis is supported. The significant existence of EKC shows the country's effort to condense CO2 emissions and indicates certain achievement of controlling environmental degradation in Pakistan. Furthermore, we find a one-way causal relationship running from economic growth to CO2 emissions. Energy consumption increases CO2 emissions both in the short and long runs. Trade openness reduces CO2 emissions in the long run but it is insignificant in the short run. In addition, the change of CO2 emissions from short run to the long span of time is corrected by about 10% yearly.

Abstract:This research examines the Asymmetric Effects of Green Finance, Financial Development, Financial technology, economic growth, foreign direct investment, and financial development on environmental sustainability. It accomplishes this by applying the Asymmetric Autoregressive Distribution of Lag (NARDL) approach on information obtained from Pakistan from 1997 to 2022. The Data is collected from the Economic Survey of Pakistan and WDI. By analyzing these factors' intricate dynamics within the context of Pakistan, the study seeks to ascertain the short- and long-term effects on environmental sustainability. Using the NARDL paradigm, we address the nonlinearities and asymmetric effects that may exist in this Model. Our findings demonstrate that Pakistan's attempts to protect the environment are aided or hindered by green finance initiatives, technology advancements, economic growth trends, FDI, and financial development. The study investigates how these linkages evolve over time, which aids in developing methodological and policy recommendations for promoting environmental sustainability across the country. This study adds to the body of previous research, Businesses, legislators, and other interested parties attempting to reconcile environmental protection with economic expansion in a world-changing world will find the results to be an invaluable resource. Policymakers should prioritize the development of green financial instruments, support sustainable economic growth, draw in foreign investments with an environmental focus, and use innovations to address the urgent problem of reducing carbon emissions and promoting a more sustainable future for Pakistan. The limitation of the study is that determining the validity of observed trends may be difficult because data for some variables may only be available for a brief period of time.

Abstract:The present study analyzes the asymmetric effects of technical innovation, foreign direct investment, and agriculture productivity on Pakistan’s environmental degradation from 1990 to 2020. A non-linear autoregressive model (NARDL) has been used for the analysis. The asymmetric effects have been computed for both the long and short run. The empirical results show that there is equilibrium long-run relationship among the variables. Moreover, it is found that the effect of FDI on CO2 emission is positive regardless of whether there are positive or negative shocks to FDI in the long run. The short-run results are similar except for the positive shocks to FDIat lag one, which reduces environmental degradation in Pakistan. However, in the long run, population growth and positive (negative) shocks to technical innovation have a negative and significant impact on CO2, whereas agriculture productivity is the main source of environmental degradation in Pakistan. The asymmetric tests show that FDI and agriculture productivity have strong asymmetric effects on the CO2 emissions in the long run, whereas there is weak evidence of, in the short and long run, asymmetric effects of technical innovations in Pakistan. These results are statistically significant, valid, and stable as per most of the diagnostic tests conducted and reported in the study.

Abstract:This study examines the existence of environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) in the perspective of Pakistan over the period of 1970–2016. For this persistence, the impact of GDP per capita, trade openness, financial development, energy consumption, and foreign direct investment on CO2 emissions is empirically scrutinized within the EKC structure. The study employed the autoregressive distributed lagged (ARDL) bound test to scrutinize the long-run relationship between the variables. For robustness, the study applied the dynamic ordinary least square technique. The Granger causality test is implemented to investigate the causal relationship between the variables for short- and long-run. The experimental results of ARDL bound test method recommend the existence of EKC hypothesis for Pakistan. The causality test outcomes indicate that energy consumption and CO2 emissions have a bidirectional relationship, whereas the other variables unidirectional cause the CO2 emissions. The unidirectional causality from other variables toward CO2 emissions supports the confirmation of the EKC hypothesis as this seems in the countries where the EKC is authenticated. These findings recommend that the regulator authorities need to enlarge investment in different new energy plans that might contribute to the exertions of climate extenuation.

Abstract:This paper explores the presence of dynamic causality between economic growth, energy consumption and CO2 emissions for Pakistan. We first test for the presence of bi-variate long run relationships between these variables using Johansen-Julius co-integration test. The robustness of the long-run relationship results has been examined using ARDL approach to cointegration. Existence of Grangers’ long run, short run and strong causalities has been studied in a VECM framework. The short run, long run and strong Granger causality results indicate the presence of bidirectional causalities between energy consumption, economic growth and the CO2 emissions. Implications of the results suggest that government should focus on building resources for ensuring adequate energy supplies in the economy by gradually increasing the share of renewable energy resources in the overall energy mix. Footprints of Denmark, Norway and Germany in Europe and Mauritius in Africa can be followed who have gradually increased energy production from renewable resources over the years. Furthermore, emission abatement activities should be made the central agenda in energy and environmental policies of Pakistan for reduction in damages associated with CO2 emissions.

Abstract:A bulk of literature has examined the asymmetric impact of renewable energy consumption on CO2 emissions by using the advanced econometric approach. While the asymmetric role of renewable energy production in the CO2 equation is largely unknown, our present study quantifies the asymmetric relationship between renewable energy production, natural resources, economic progress, and CO2 emission for Pakistan by using the NARDL approach. It is found that positive change in renewable energy production has a positive effect on CO2 emissions, while a negative change in renewable energy production has a negative effect on CO2 emissions in the long run. Furthermore, a positive and negative change in natural resources contributes negatively to CO2 emissions in the long run. The results reveal that a positive change in economic progress significantly increases CO2 emissions in the long run. Based on findings, Pakistan’s government should encourage local and international investors to increase their investment in the production of renewable energy by reducing environmental degradation.

Abstract:Trade openness is the foundation of economic growth for developed as well as underdeveloped countries. Many countries are now trying to promote their energy sector because energy is an important factor in the production process. A country can trade with other countries only if the country has a surplus of production of Goods and Services. This is the key factor for the development of a country. This study provides empirical evidence of energy use and trade openness on carbon dioxide emission in Pakistan’s economy by using annual time series data from 1976-to 2019. Augmented Dickey-Fuller and Philips Perron tests are employed to check the stationary of the variables, and the ARDL method is employed to check the long-run relationship of variables. The result explores the effect of energy on the trade openness of Pakistan. Trade is the most significant variable in both the long run and short run. The CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) becomes the cause of environmental degradation. This study recommends that government must take serious steps regarding trade policies in Pakistan. Government must also take care of the poor farmers and traders through subsidies. With good policy implications, the trade level of a country will increase.

Abstract:Over the past three decades, global economic development patterns have considerably affected the natural environment, and economies have endured a plethora of environmental concerns as a result of the negative effects of climate change. Among them, Pakistan is the fifth most vulnerable country, and climate change has harmfully affected the ecological and socio-economic conditions of the country. In this regard, this study aimed to investigate the role of green energy consumption, eco-innovation, and urbanization while explaining the dream of low-carbon economy and environmental sustainability in the context of Pakistan using annual time series dataset spanning from 1990 to 2020. The short-run and long-run associations among explained and explanatory variables were investigated using the symmetric, asymmetric, and quantile autoregressive distributed lag models. The findings of the study demonstrated that low-carbon economy, green energy consumption, ecological innovation, urbanization, GDP per capita, and labor force are cointegrated for the long-term association in symmetric, asymmetric, and quantile autoregressive distributed lag models. Furthermore, green energy consumption and effective eco-innovation are the most important paths to ensure environmental sustainability, while urbanization, GDP per capita, and labor force contribute negatively to the low-carbon economy. The findings of the study provide a policy framework for the development of a comprehensive strategy to promote environmental sustainability in Pakistan by emphasizing green energy consumption, ecological innovation, and controlled urbanization, as well as the incorporation of environment friendly policies into economic development policies.

Abstract:All over the world, individuals are becoming more concerned about environmental degradation. This influence on our planet's geographic expansion is worrisome, and environmentalists are worried. So, the present study is being undertaken to determine the nonlinear consequences of consumption-based CO 2 emissions (CCO 2 ), militarism (MITEX), and gross fixed capital accumulation (GFC) on environmental sustainability in Pakistan. The Non-linear Autoregressive Distributive Lag model (NARDL) was used in the current study to investigate the nonlinear impact of CCO 2 , MITEX, and GFC on environmental sustainability from 1980 to 2021. The study's findings suggest the presence of a nonlinear relationship between CCO 2 , MITEX, GFC, and environmental sustainability. Our data show that CCO 2 , MITEX, and GFC all have a negative influence on environmental sustainability.
