Abstract:The inhomogeneity of plastisphere and soil may result in different microbial communities, thus potentially affecting soil functions. Biodegradable plastics offer an alternative to conventional plastics, nevertheless, the inadequate end-of-life treatment of biodegradable plastics may release more microplastics. Herein, we collected PE and PBAT/PLA microplastics in plastic-mulching farmland in Hebei, China. The bacterial communities of soil, PE and PBAT/PLA plastisphere were investigated using 16 S high-throughput sequencing. We found that the structure of bacterial communities in PBAT/PLA plastisphere were significantly distinct from PE plastisphere and soil. The alpha diversities in PBAT/PLA plastisphere were significantly lower than PE plastisphere and soil. Statistical analysis of differentially ASVs suggested that PBAT/PLA microplastics act as a filter, enriching taxa with the capability to degrade plastic polymers such as Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria. Compared to PE plastisphere, PBAT/PLA plastisphere has networks of less complexity, lower modularity, and more competitive interactions. Predicted metabolic pathways involved in human diseases, carbohydrate metabolism, amino acid metabolism, and xenobiotic biodegradation and metabolism were promoted in PBAT/PLA plastisphere, along with the facilitation in abundance of genes associated with carbon and nitrogen cycling. Our results highlighted the uniqueness of plastisphere of biodegradable microplastics from conventional microplastics and their potential impact on soil functions.

Abstract:Biodegradable plastics have emerged as an ecological alternative to conventional petroleum-based plastics. Despite the recent advances in the effects of conventional microplastic on soil ecosystems, the ecological impact of biodegradable microplastics in soil environments remains poorly understood. Here, we performed soil mi-crocosms with conventional (polyethylene and polystyrene) and biodegradable (polybutylene succinate and polylactic acid) microplastics to estimate their effects on the success patterns, co-occurrence networks, and the assembly mechanisms of soil bacterial communities. Biodegradable microplastics significantly altered the soil bacterial community composition with steeper temporal turnovers (rate: 0.317 - 0.514) compared to the con-ventional microplastic treatments (rate: 0.211 - 0.220). Network under biodegradable microplastics showed greater network complexity, including network size, connectivity, average clustering coefficient, and the number of keystone species, as compared with the conventional microplastic treatments. Additionally, the biodegradable microplastic network had higher robustness, which may be potentially due to the enhanced dissolved organic carbon contents in the soil treated with biodegradable microplastics. The bacterial community assembly was initially governed by deterministic homogeneous selection (93 - 100 %) under the stress of microplastics, but was progressively structured by increasing stochastic homogeneous dispersal (17.8 - 73.3 %) over time. The normalized stochasticity ratio also revealed that the application of microplastics increased the importance of stochastic processes following incubation. These findings greatly enhanced our understanding of the ecological mechanisms and interactions of soil bacterial communities in response to microplastic stress.

Abstract:Biodegradable plastics attract public attention as promising substitute for non-degradable plastics that trigger serious plastic pollution, and they are claimed to be environmentally harmless and biodegradable by microorganisms. However, not all biodegradable plastics are completely degradable under natural conditions. Some of them may be disintegrated into microplastics more rapidly than conventional plastics, emerging as another threat to soil environments. As a part of microplastics, biodegradable microplastics may pose stronger negative effects on several soil species than oil-based microplastics under some conditions. Currently, there is a fiercely increasing trend to replace nondegradable plastic commodities with biodegradable ones. Therefore, to discuss the ecological safety of biodegradable plastics is essential before promoting wide application of them during commercial use. This review provided a brief introduction on biodegradable plastics and summarized their deterioration behaviors in terrestrial environments, together with evidences on releases of additives and biodegradable microplastics. Then, potential adverse effects of biodegradable microplastics in soil ecosystems, including responses on soil properties, microbial communities, and several soil species were discussed, suggesting biodegradable microplastics as a potential threat to ecological safety of soil ecosystems. By this token, biodegradable plastics might not be a panacea to the existing “white pollution” and need further exploring.
LDPE Microplastic Films Alter Microbial Community Composition and Enzymatic Activities in Soil

Abstract:Concerns regarding microplastic contamination have spread from aquatic environments to terrestrial systems with a growing number of studies have been reported. Notwithstanding, the potential effects on soil ecosystems remain largely unexplored. In this study, the effects of polyethylene microplastics on soil enzymatic activities and the bacterial community were evaluated, and the microbiota colonizing on microplastics were also investigated. Microplastic amendment (2000 fragments per kg soil) significantly increased the urease and catalase activities in soil after 15 days, and no discernible alteration of invertase activities was detected. Results from high-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA revealed that the alpha diversities (richness, evenness, and diversity) of the microbiota in soil were not obviously changed by the PE amendment, whereas the diversity indexes of microbiota on plastic fragments were significantly lower than those in the control and amended soils. Different taxonomic composition was observed in between the control and amended soils after 90 days of incubation. Bacterial assemblages with distinct community structure colonized the PE microplastics. Additionally, several taxa including plastic-degrading bacteria and pathogens were more abundant on microplastics. Simultaneously, the predicted functional profiles showed that the pathways of amino acid metabolism and xenobiotics biodegradation and metabolism were higher on the microplastics. These results indicated that microplastics in soil, compared with those in aquatic environments, can also act as a distinct microbial habitat, potentially altering the ecological functions of soil ecosystems.

Abstract:Biodegradable plastics were developed to mitigate environmental pollution caused by conventional plastics. Research indicates that biodegradable microplastics still have effects on plants and microorganisms as their non-biodegradable counterparts, yet the effects on vegetable crops are not well-documented. Additionally, the function of soil microorganisms affected by biodegradable microplastics on the fate of microplastics remains unverified. In this study, Brassica chinensis was cultivated in soil previously incubated for one year with low-density polyethylene (LDPE-MPs) and poly (butylene adipate- co -terephthalate) microplastics (PBAT-MPs) at 0.05 % and 2 % concentrations. High concentrations of PBAT-MPs significantly reduced the biomass to 5.83 % of the control. The abundance of Methyloversatilis , IS-44 , and UTCFX1 in the rhizosphere bacterial community increased significantly in the presence of PBAT-MPs. Moreover, these microplastics significantly enhanced soil enzyme activity. Incubation tests were performed with three PBAT plastic sheets to assess the function of the altered bacterial community in the soil of control (Control-soil) and soil treated with high concentrations of PBAT-MPs (PBAT-MPs-soil). Scanning Electron Microscopy and Atomic Transfer Microscopy (SEM/ATM) results confirmed enhanced PBAT degradation in the PBAT-MPs-soil. PICRUST2 analysis revealed that pathways related to substance degradation were upregulated in the PBAT-MPs-soil. Furthermore, a higher percentage of strains with PBAT-MPs-degrading ability was found in PBAT-MPs-soil. Our results confirm that PBAT-MPs significantly inhibit the growth of vegetable crops and that soil bacterial communities affected by PBAT-MPs are instrumental in degrading them.

Abstract:Plastic film mulching, widely used in agriculture, leads to microplastic (MP) pollution in soils. While biodegradable polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT) films may offer a solution, their impacts on subsurface soils and microorganisms remain unclear. To investigate the effects of conventional non-biodegradable polyethylene (PE) and biodegradable PBAT MPs on the properties of sub-surface soils and microbial communities, MPs were added at varying doses in a field experiment and incubated for 160 days. Physicochemical characteristics, nutrient dynamics, and microbial composition, diversity, and networks of soils were analyzed using standard techniques and 16S rRNA/ITS gene sequencing. Correlations between soil properties and microbes were assessed. Both MP types significantly altered soil characteristics, with PBAT-MP elevating pH and the levels of available phosphorus and potassium more than PE-MP. Microbial composition shifts occurred, with low-addition PBAT-MP promoting plastic-degrading genera. The assessment of α/β-diversity indicated that PBAT-MP predominantly influenced fungi while PE-MP impacted bacteria. An examination of microbial co-occurrence networks highlighted that PE-MP primarily disrupted fungal interactions, whereas PBAT-MP streamlined network complexity. Correlation analyses revealed that PBAT-MP promoted fungal diversity/network resilience correlating to nutrients. PE-MP and PBAT-MP significantly altered native soil/microbe relationships. PBAT-MP may exert greater, yet unknown, impacts over time through its biodegradation into newer and smaller fragments. Future research needs to integrate multi-omics and stable isotope science to elucidate the deep mechanistic impacts of degraded film-derived MPs on microbial ecological functions and biogeochemical cycles. Attention should also be paid to the long-term accumulation/transport of MPs in agricultural soils. Overall, this work deepens the impact and understanding of MPs from plastic film on sub-surface soil ecology. Furthermore, it provides a theoretical foundation for managing ‘white pollution’ in the film-covered farmlands of arid and semi-arid regions in China.

Abstract:Wide usage of plastic coupled with mismanagement has created a humongous environmental hazard threatening entire ecosystems. To date, the potential effects of plastic debris-induced soil nutrition substance changes and the relevant microbial metabolic behavior remain unclear. Here, we studied the effect of plastic films polyethylene and polylactic acid in differential soil environments (farmland, woodland, and wetland) for 120 days. Soil enzyme activities (urease, neutral phosphatase, and catalase) and nutrition substance (NH 4 + -N, available P, available K, and soil organic matter) present obvious variations in polylactic acid groups compared to polyethylene-treated samples. 16S rRNA gene sequencing indicates that several bacteria abundance such as Bacteroidales , Actinobacteriota , Nitrososphaeraceae , Pyrinomonadalcs , Muribaculaceae , exhibited obvious up-regulation or down-regulation, and simultaneously, the carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus cycling relevant species Bryobacte r, Bradyrhizobium , and Sphingomonas , expressed wider margin of down-regulation in abundance in plastic treatment soil samples. As a result, the abundance of metabolites including sugar, amino acid, and fatty acids, which may associated with nutrition substance metabolic pathways, were significantly altered in the stress of plastic. These findings provide valuable information on the environmental effects of plastics, and the relationships of subsequent nutrition substance changes and microbial metabolic behavior.

THE EFFECTS OF RATE OF CHANGE IN BODY WEIGHT ON TISSUE DEVELOPMENT AND MEAT QUALITY OF YOUTHFUL BULLS 1 ' 2

Abstract:Forty-eight Angus bulls about 13 mo of age were used to study the effects of rate of change in live weight on muscle fiber, collagen and sensory characteristics of meat. Bulls were fed a finishing diet before treatment, and assigned to three treatments: 1) negative, 2) zero or 3)positive weight gain for 30 or 60 d prior to slaughter. Treatments were imposed by adjusting feed intake. Seventytwo hours after slaughter, carcasses were observed for quality and yield grade characteristics and Iongissimus muscle samples were obtained for fiber type, collagen and sensory characterization. Carcass lean at the 12th rib interface became darker in color (P<.01), softer (P<.05), coarser textured (P<.01) and more physiologically mature (P<.O1) when bulls were fed an additional 30 d. Increases in average daily gain improved lean texture (P<.05), but had insignificant effects on lean color. Marbling scores and percentages of kidney and pelvic fat increased (P<.O1) with length of time fed. Quantities of carcass fat were reduced by reducing daily weight gains through restricting dietary intake. Neither length of time fed nor rate of change in live weight affected (P>.05) muscle fiber characteristics. Increased age of bulls tended (P>.05) to be associated with an increase in red muscle-fiber quantity. Length of time fed or rate of change in live weight did not affect collagen characteristics or tenderness of meat. It was concluded that the collagen content and solubility of muscle from bulls 14 to 15 mo of age cannot be varied through altering rate of weight change. (

Abstract:Concerns about the ecological safety of both conventional and biodegradable microplastics have grown due to the inadequate end-of-life treatments of plastics. In this study, the effects of conventional and biodegradable microplastics on the spread of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and virulence factors (VFs) were estimated in a soil microcosm experiment. The gene profiles and their respective bacterial hosts in soil were evaluated by metagenomic sequencing methods. The abundances of ARGs and VFs in polybutylene succinate (PBS) treated soils were statistically higher than the values in the control and conventional microplastic treatments. In comparison with the control, application of conventional microplastics showed negligible effects on ARG and VF profiles in the soil, while biodegradable microplastic amendments significantly changed the compositions of ARGs and VFs. The host-tracking analysis suggested application of microplastics broadened the bacterial hosts of ARGs and VFs in the soil. The percentage of Proteobacteria as ARG hosts increased from 38.5% in the control soils to 58.2% in microplastic exposed soil. The genus Bradyrhizobium was the dominant host of ARGs and VFs in biodegradable microplastic treatments, while conventional microplastics increased the percentages of Pseudomonas as the bacterial hosts. This study enhances the understanding of the effects of conventional and biodegradable microplastics on the propagation and hosts of ARGs and VFs in the terrestrial environment, providing essential insights into the risk assessment and management of plastics.
Effects of microplastics on soil microbiome: The impacts of polymer type, shape, and concentration

Abstract:Increasing research has recognized that the ubiquitous presence of microplastics in terrestrial environments is undeniable, which potentially alters the soil ecosystem properties and processes. The fact that microplastics with diverse characteristics enter into the soil may induce distinct effects on soil ecosystems. Our knowledge of the impacts of microplastics with different polymers, shapes, and concentrations on soil bacterial communities is still limited. To address this, we examined the effects of spherical microplastics (150 μm) with different polymers (i.e., polyethylene (PE), polystyrene (PS), and polypropylene (PP)) and four shapes of PP microplastics (i.e., fiber, film, foam, and particle) at a constant concentration (1%, w/w) on the soil bacterial community in an agricultural soil over 60 days. Treatments with different concentrations (0.01–20%, w/w) of PP microplastic particles (150 μm) were also included. The bacterial communities in PE and PP treatments showed a similar pattern but separated from those in PS-treated soils, indicating the polymer backbone structure is an important factor modulating the soil bacterial responses. Fiber, foam, and film microplastics significantly affected the soil bacterial composition as compared to the particle. The community dissimilarity of soil bacteria was significantly (R2 = 0.592, p < 0.001) correlated with the changes of microplastic concentration. The random forest model identified that certain bacteria belonging to Patescibacteria were closely linked to microplastic contamination. Additionally, analysis of the predicted function further showed that microplastics with different characteristics caused distinct effects on microbial community function. Our findings suggested that the idiosyncrasies of microplastics should not be neglected when studying their effects on terrestrial ecosystems.

Abstract:Microplastic threats to biodiversity, health and ecological safety are adding to concern worldwide, but the real impacts on the functioning of organisms and ecosystems are obscure owing to their inert characteristics. Here we investigated the long-lasting ecological effects of six prevalent microplastic types: polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polyamide (PA), polystyrene (PS), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) on soil bacteria at a 2 % (w/w) level. Due to the inertia and lack of available nitrogen of these microplastics, their effects on bacteriome tended to converge after one year and were strongly different from their short-term effects. The soil volumes around microplastics were very specific, in which the microplastic-adapted bacteria ( e.g., some genera in Actinobacteria ) were enriched but the phyla Bacteroidetes and Gemmatimonadetes declined, resulting in higher microbial nitrogen requirements and reduced organic carbon mineralization. The reshaped bacteriome was specialized in the genetic potential of xenobiotic and lipid metabolism as well as related oxidation, esterification, and hydrolysis processes, but excessive oxidative damage resulted in severe weakness in community genetic information processing. According to model predictions, microplastic effects are indirectly derived from nutrients and oxidative stress, and the effects on bacterial functions are stronger than on structure, posing a heavy risk to soil ecosystems.

Abstract:Microplastics have become a contaminant of increasing concern in soils. Although biodegradable plastics were considered as alternatives of traditional plastics, some evidence showed that biodegradable plastics might produce more microplastics. Until now, the effect of biodegradable microplastics on soil functions and processes, as well as microbial communities is uncertain. Based on high throughput sequencing, enzymatic activity assay and dynamic analysis of soil carbon and nitrogen, we investigated the effects of biodegradable polylactic acid microplastics (PLA MPs) on soil microbiota and related ecological processes under conditions of high or low carbon content. The results showed that PLA MPs had no significant effect on the overall diversity and composition of bacterial communities or related ecosystem functions and processes. However, co-occurrence network analysis revealed that PLA MPs impacted the interactions between constituent species, which might have legacy effect on soil bacterial communities and functions. Our data also revealed that PLA MPs could trade off the priming effect of carbon source. Our results provided an integrated picture in understanding the effects of PLA MPs on soil microbes, properties and ecological functions, which will help to further understand the effects of MPs on terrestrial ecosystems.

Abstract:The results of a scientific consensus forum on sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) risk factors were recently published in the Journal. At the time of the meeting, the meta-analysis by Hauck et al. on the relationship between breastfeeding and SIDS had not yet been published, although preliminary data on 24 case control studies were presented. The final study examined 288 reports that included data on breastfeeding and SIDS, and found 18 case control studies that were considered appropriate for analysis that dealt with the risk of SIDS in the breastfed (six studies ended up being excluded from the dataset as they did not fulfil the required criteria). Given the results of the study, it is appropriate to emphasise that breastfeeding was found to be protective against SIDS and that this was particularly so when breastfeeding was exclusive, that is, the univariate summary odds ratio for infants who received any amount of breastfeeding for any duration was 0.40 (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.35– 0.44), and for exclusive breastfeeding for any duration was 0.27 (95% CI 0.24–0.31). Thus despite inconsistencies in previous studies as to whether breastfeeding has a protective effect against SIDS, it does appear that this is the case. The reason for this protective effect is uncertain; however, it is recognized that breastfed infants are more easily roused from sleep than those who have been formula-fed. This occurs at 2–3 months of age, which is within the 2to 4-month period when SIDS rates are highest. In addition, it is possible that breastfeeding enhances an infant’s immunological status by providing cytokines and immunoglobulins during a time when their own immunoglobulin production is low and maternally acquired levels are declining. Both failure of arousal and infection have been implicated in the aetiology of SIDS. A study showing that infants who are breastfed have higher levels of docosohexanoic acid (DHA) in brain cortex compared with formula-fed infants was also published in this Journal several years ago. Thus, while associated environmental factors in breastfed infants such as maternal smoke exposure and sociodemographic factors may play a role in an improved outcome, it is also possible that intrinsic metabolic differences may be involved, as DHA is an essential fatty acid involved in neural maturation and therefore possibly in arousal. The recently published data provide further evidence to support the significant role of breastfeeding in improved health outcomes for infants.
Effects of different microplastic types on soil physicochemical properties, enzyme activities, and bacterial communities

Abstract:Global concern continues to mount regarding the accumulation of microplastics (MPs) in soil. However, little is known about how various types of MPs influence the properties of soil ecosystems. Here, we evaluated the effects of six different types of MPs, including low-density polyethylene (LDPE), polyamide (PA), polystyrene (PS), polyhydroxy-alkanoates (PHA), polybutadiene styrene (PBS), and polylactide (PLA), on soil physicochemical properties, enzyme activities, and microbial communities. At the end of a 230-day soil incubation, we observed significant changes in soil moisture content, soil organic carbon, pH, NH4+-N, NO3--N, and available phosphorus. The addition of MPs had a significant influence on the activities of soil β-glucosidase, acid phosphatase, urease, and fluorescein diacetate hydrolase, with effects varying with MP type. Results of 16S rRNA gene high throughput sequencing showed that MP exposure had little effect on soil microbial alpha diversity, but that PHA contamination significantly reduced ACE, Chao1, and Shannon index values. MP contamination also altered soil microbial community composition. In particular, the relative abundance of Firmicutes increased significantly while the relative abundance of Actinobacteriota, Proteobacteria (especially the nitrogen-fixing rhizobia), and Acidobacteriota decreased following exposure to PHA. Redundancy analysis showed that acid phosphatase and pH were the two main environmental factors affecting bacterial community structure at the phylum and order levels. Furthermore, Tax4Fun2 analysis found that MP treatment disrupted fundamental bacterial metabolic pathways. Our findings indicate that different types of MPs can affect soil fertility, bacterial community structure, and function in various ways, and highlight that biodegradable MPs may alter soil bacterial communities more than conventional MPs.

Abstract:Introduction: The impact of plastics on terrestrial ecosystems is receiving increasing attention. Although of great importance to soil biogeochemical processes, how plastics influence soil microbes have yet to be systematically studied. The primary objectives of this study are to evaluate whether plastics lead to divergent responses of soil microbial community parameters, and explore the potential driving factors. Methods: We performed a meta-analysis of 710 paired observations from 48 published articles to quantify the impact of plastic on the diversity, biomass, and functionality of soil microbial communities. Results and discussion: This study indicated that plastics accelerated soil organic carbon loss (effect size = −0.05, p = 0.004) and increased microbial functionality (effect size = 0.04, p = 0.003), but also reduced microbial biomass (effect size = −0.07, p < 0.001) and the stability of co-occurrence networks. Polyethylene significantly reduced microbial richness (effect size = −0.07, p < 0.001) while polypropylene significantly increased it (effect size = 0.17, p < 0.001). Degradable plastics always had an insignificant effect on the microbial community. The effect of the plastic amount on microbial functionality followed the "hormetic dose–response" model, the infection point was about 40 g/kg. Approximately 3564.78 μm was the size of the plastic at which the response of microbial functionality changed from positive to negative. Changes in soil pH, soil organic carbon, and total nitrogen were significantly positively correlated with soil microbial functionality, biomass, and richness ( R 2 = 0.04–0.73, p < 0.05). The changes in microbial diversity were decoupled from microbial community structure and functionality. We emphasize the negative impacts of plastics on soil microbial communities such as microbial abundance, essential to reducing the risk of ecological surprise in terrestrial ecosystems. Our comprehensive assessment of plastics on soil microbial community parameters deepens the understanding of environmental impacts and ecological risks from this emerging pollution.

Abstract:As the use of biodegradable plastics becomes increasingly widespread, their environmental behaviors and impacts warrant attention. Unlike conventional plastics, their degradability predisposes them to fragment into microplastics (MPs) more readily. These MPs subsequently enter the terrestrial environment. The abundant functional groups of biodegradable MPs significantly affect their transport and interactions with other contaminants (e.g., organic contaminants and heavy metals). The intermediates and additives released from depolymerization of biodegradable MPs, as well as coexisting contaminants, induce alterations in soil ecosystems. These processes indicate that the impacts of biodegradable MPs on soil ecosystems might significantly diverge from conventional MPs. However, an exhaustive and timely comparison of the environmental behaviors and effects of biodegradable and conventional MPs within soil ecosystems remains scarce. To address this gap, the Web of Science database and bibliometric software were utilized to identify publications with keywords containing biodegradable MPs and soil. Moreover, this review comprehensively summarizes the transport behavior of biodegradable MPs, their role as contaminant carriers, and the potential risks they pose to soil physicochemical properties, nutrient cycling, biota, and CO2 emissions as compared with conventional MPs. Biodegradable MPs, due to their great transport and adsorption capacity, facilitate the mobility of coexisting contaminants, potentially inducing widespread soil and groundwater contamination. Additionally, these MPs and their depolymerization products can disrupt soil ecosystems by altering physicochemical properties, increasing microbial biomass, decreasing microbial diversity, inhibiting the development of plants and animals, and increasing CO2 emissions. Finally, some perspectives are proposed to outline future research directions. Overall, this study emphasizes the pronounced effects of biodegradable MPs on soil ecosystems relative to their conventional counterparts and contributes to the understanding and management of biodegradable plastic contamination within the terrestrial ecosystem.
The Structural and Functional Responses of Rhizosphere Bacteria to Biodegradable Microplastics in the Presence of Biofertilizers

Abstract:Biodegradable microplastics (Bio-MPs) are a hot topic in soil research due to their potential to replace conventional microplastics. Biofertilizers are viewed as an alternative to inorganic fertilizers in agriculture due to their potential to enhance crop yields and food safety. The use of both can have direct and indirect effects on rhizosphere microorganisms. However, the influence of the coexistence of "Bio-MPs and biofertilizers" on rhizosphere microbial characteristics remains unclear. We investigated the effects of coexisting biofertilizers and Bio-MPs on the structure, function, and especially the carbon metabolic properties of crop rhizosphere bacteria, using a pot experiment in which polyethylene microplastics (PE-MPs) were used as a reference. The results showed that the existence of both microplastics (MPs) changed the physicochemical properties of the rhizosphere soil. Exposure to MPs also remarkably changed the composition and diversity of rhizosphere bacteria. The network was more complex in the Bio-MPs group. Additionally, metagenomic analyses showed that PE-MPs mainly affected microbial vitamin metabolism. Bio-MPs primarily changed the pathways related to carbon metabolism, such as causing declined carbon fixation/degradation and inhibition of methanogenesis. After partial least squares path model (PLS-PM) analysis, we observed that both materials influenced the rhizosphere environment through the bacterial communities and functions. Despite the degradability of Bio-MPs, our findings confirmed that the coexistence of biofertilizers and Bio-MPs affected the fertility of the rhizosphere. Regardless of the type of plastic, its use in soil requires an objective and scientifically grounded approach.

Abstract:Plastic mulching is a common practice in agricultural systems and is often combined with fertilization. Biodegradable plastics (BPs) are becoming an alternative to non-biodegradable plastics (non-BPs) for soil mulching. However, the effects of fertilization on the microbial communities on BPs remain unclear. Here, we explored the responses of the plastisphere to different fertilization practices in soil-based microcosms containing three BPs: polylactic acid (PLA), poly (butylene succinate) (PBS), and poly (butylene-adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT), and one non-BP (low-density polyethylene, LDPE). The 16S and ITS rRNA gene-based Illumina sequencing method were used to identify the bacterial and fungal communities on the plastics and in the soils. Microbial community structure on BPs was significantly different from that in soils and on LDPE. The predicted functional profiles of bacteria on BPs, especially PBAT, were distinct from those in soils. The plastisphere communities on BPs were dominated by microbes adapted to access and utilize carbon sources compared with of the communities on LDPE. Application of manure increased the alpha diversity of bacterial communities on BPs but decreased it on LDPE. The structure of bacterial communities on BPs changed with the application of manure. Our research establishes the baseline dynamics of plastisphere communities on BPs in soils.

Abstract:The heterogeneity of plastisphere and soil can lead to variation in microbiome, potentially impacting soil functions. Current studies of the plastisphere have mainly focused on bacterial communities, and fungal com-munities are poorly understood. Biodegradable and conventional microplastics may recruit specific microbial taxa due to their different biodegradability. Herein, we collected polyethylene (PE) and polybutylene adipate terephthalate/polylactide (PBAT/PLA) microplastics in farmland (Hebei, China) and characterized the fungal community in PE and PBAT/PLA plastisphere. Results from high-throughput sequencing showed significantly lower alpha diversity and distinct composition of fungal community in PBAT/PLA plastisphere compared to PE plastisphere. Additionally, the PBAT/PLA plastisphere demonstrated a significant enrichment of fungal taxa with potential plastic-degrading capability such as Nectriaceae, Pleosporaceae and Didymellaceae. The stochasticity of drift (28.7-43.5 %) and dispersal limitation (38.6-39.4 %) were dominant in the assembly of PE and PBAT/ PLA plastisphere fungal community. Higher stable and more complex network in PBAT/PLA plastispheres were observed as compared to PE plastisphere. Besides, the total relative abundance of plant and animal pathogens were higher in PBAT/PLA plastisphere than that in PE plastisphere, suggesting that biodegradable microplastics may pose a higher threat to soil health. This study contributes to our understanding of the characteristics of plastisphere fungal communities in soil environments and the associated risks to terrestrial ecosystems resulting from microplastic accumulation.

Abstract:As emerging contaminants, the ecological impact of microplastics has attracted worldwide attention because of the limitations of recycling technology and their long durability, leading to their accumulation in the environment and the potential risk to human health. In this study, we investigated the effects of PE microplastics (1 % and 5 % w /w) on soil physicochemical properties, enzyme activity, and microbial community. The addition of PE microplastics pollution promoted the activities of urease and fluorescein diacetate hydrolase (FDAse), whilst the activity of neutral phosphatase was inhibited. The addition of PE microplastics did not significantly affect soil microbial community alpha diversity, however, soil microbial community composition was altered. The 1 % ( w /w) PE microplastics significantly influenced the relative abundance of Arthrobacter and norank_f_Gemmatimonadaceae, and 5 % (w/w) PE microplastics significantly reduced the relative abundance of Arthrobacter , Nocardia , Bacillus and Blastococcus . The environmental factor correlation analysis revealed that pH as well as soil organic carbon and total nitrogen significantly affected the structure of soil bacterial communities at the phylum and genus level, respectively. Particularly, the dominant species on the surface of the microplastics were Nocardia , Aeromicrobium , Amycolatopsis and Rhodococcus , which were remarkably different from those in soils. These bacterial taxa were related to the degradation of microplastics, as well as transmission of diseases and resistance genes. This work demonstrated the influence of PE microplastics on soil ecology, suggesting that microplastics in soils can act as a distinct microbial habitat which can potentially alter the ecological functions of soils.
