Robust Indoor Localization and Map Matching Algorithm with Visual SLAM

Abstract:With the rapid development of intelligent robotic technology, global positioning and localization algorithm is attracting much more attention in recent years, especially for unknown indoor environments. In such case, global positioning system (GPS) will lose its effect, and relative positioning systems become more important, including UWB, IMU and VIO, which exist drift phenomenon with time. In this paper, we propose a novel global localization and map matching algorithm suitable for indoor and outdoor unseen environments. Its core algorithm is based on visual SLAM to generate the sparse map point cloud as well as historical trajectory path. After simply annotating the site drawings, a two-dimensional semantic map of the environment can be obtained. Then the point cloud and trajectory path are matched with the semantic map through a global search algorithm. Finally, the global localization in unknown environment can be easily achieved and the historical trajectory path can be displayed accurately on the site drawing. Real-world experiment shows the effectiveness and robustness of the method.
An Off-Screen Object Visualization Approach for Mobile Augment Reality

Abstract:Current mobile augmented reality off-screen visualization methods usually display the digital objects in the center of the screen.However,due to the limited screen size of a handle device,it would be intensive when there are many objects and thus have a low visualizing performance.To address this,we proposed an off-screen visualization method which utilized the edge of the screen to visualize many off-screen objects simultaneously.Based on geographical data and sensors,the method displayed arrows around the screen to indicate the directions and distances of off-screen objects,also a box whose size could be adaptive to the distance between the device and an in-screen building was designed for indicating the building,to increase the system performance.Experiments were conducted to compare the performance of the proposed method and the traditional method which displays the objects in the center of the screen.The results showed that the proposed method had a better performance in terms of locating buildings,with task completion time decreasing 11.02% and user satisfaction increasing 14.72%.

Abstract:This article describes the design and implementation of an online mobile app that is capable of locating users and displaying related information on a digital Augmented Reality map. The users can directly capture and interact with general paper maps using a cell phones built-in camera and GPS Chipset. By registering the map data in the database, this system can provide great assistance to tourists, students, explorers in exploring various locations such as university campuses, theme parks, terrain topographic maps. This application is a two-tier client-server architecture. A paper map must firstly be registered on our website; here, we provide a side-by-side display of the registering paper map and Google map. The users are required to select at least three points on their paper map which correspond to another set of three points on Google Map. The pictorial gist of the paper map and the transformation matrix between coordinates of the two systems are stored in our server. At the client-side, when the users point the camera to a registered paper map, the app could track features on the map and use the stored transformation matrix to identify the users' exact location to be graphically displayed on the cell phone screen. Many applications could be added on top of this platform, e.g. tracking and directing pathways, displaying live updated information, warning hazards. Some will be further discussed in this article.

Abstract:Mobile Augmented Reality (MAR) systems are becoming ideal platforms for visualization, permitting users to better comprehend and interact with spatial information. Subsequently, this technological development, in turn, has prompted efforts to enhance mechanisms for registering virtual objects in real world contexts. Most existing AR 3D Registration techniques lack the scene recognition capabilities needed to describe accurately the positioning of virtual objects in scenes representing reality. Moreover, the application of such registration methods in indoor AR-GIS systems is further impeded by the limited capacity of these systems to detect the geometry and semantic information in indoor environments. In this paper, we propose a novel method for fusing virtual objects and indoor scenes, based on indoor scene recognition technology. To accomplish scene fusion in AR-GIS, we first detect key points in reference images. Then, we perform interior layout extraction using a Fully Connected Networks (FCN) algorithm to acquire layout coordinate points for the tracking targets. We detect and recognize the target scene in a video frame image to track targets and estimate the camera pose. In this method, virtual 3D objects are fused precisely to a real scene, according to the camera pose and the previously extracted layout coordinate points. Our results demonstrate that this approach enables accurate fusion of virtual objects with representations of real world indoor environments. Based on this fusion technique, users can better grasp virtual three-dimensional representations on an AR-GIS platform.

A Visual-Inertial Fusion Based Tracking System For Mobile Augmented Reality

Abstract:Recently, smart phones are usually equipped with cameras and motion sensors. This means that mobile phones have become good platforms to deploy augmented reality (AR) applications. We propose a new tracking system for AR which uses inertial measurement units (gyroscope, accelerometer and magnetic field sensor) combined with a camera to automatically detect and track a dominant plane in the scene without prior knowledge about the environment. Meanwhile, it also estimates the pose of the device, so the rendered virtual objects can be correctly overplayed on the real view. While tracking the plane and computing the camera pose with respect to the scene, the solution also needs to construct and update the map of the scene, which consists of keyframes and keypoints in our scenario. Finally, we implement our system and test its performance on Android smart phones. Our experimental results show that the system can achieve real-time and drift-free performance and the tracking is quite accurate and robust.

Abstract:Augmented reality (AR) has renewed the perspective of how people see and process information in daily life by blending the real world with rich and interactive virtual contents. However, restricted by the limited computation resources of mobile devices, most existing AR applications can process only local features in front of the camera. Such limitation severely hinders the progress of inventing more practical AR applications that demand more complex interaction. To break this barrier, we introduce a novel spatial-aware AR application framework for the indoor environment in this work. The core techniques include a large-scale indoor layout reconstruction system that can reconstruct the 3D layout of an entire floor plan from few panoramas taken via commodity cameras, and an online localization system that can accurately align the virtual 3D layout with real world environment in real time. By incorporating the perception of global scene structure with the AR interaction pipeline, our system can support more sophisticated applications with the complex interplay among the users, virtual objects and the real world scene. We tested our framework on a large-scale indoor environment and demonstrate its effectiveness on practical AR applications, a first-person-shooting game and an indoor navigation.
AR Mapping: Accurate and Efficient Mapping for Augmented Reality

Abstract: Augmented reality (AR) has gained increasingly attention from both research and industry communities. By overlaying digital information and content onto the physical world, AR enables users to experience the world in a more informative and efficient manner. As a major building block for AR systems, localization aims at determining the device's pose from a pre-built "map" consisting of visual and depth information in a known environment. While the localization problem has been widely studied in the literature, the "map" for AR systems is rarely discussed. In this paper, we introduce the AR Map for a specific scene to be composed of 1) color images with 6-DOF poses; 2) dense depth maps for each image and 3) a complete point cloud map. We then propose an efficient end-to-end solution to generating and evaluating AR Maps. Firstly, for efficient data capture, a backpack scanning device is presented with a unified calibration pipeline. Secondly, we propose an AR mapping pipeline which takes the input from the scanning device and produces accurate AR Maps. Finally, we present an approach to evaluating the accuracy of AR Maps with the help of the highly accurate reconstruction result from a high-end laser scanner. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first time to present an end-to-end solution to efficient and accurate mapping for AR applications.
Crossview Mapping with Graph-based Geolocalization on City-Scale Street Maps

Abstract:3D environment mapping has been actively stud-ied recently with the development of autonomous driving and augmented reality. Although many image-based methods are proposed due to their convenience and flexibility compared to other complex sensors, few works focus on fixing the inherent scale ambiguity of image-based methods and registering the reconstructed structure to the real-world 3D map, which is very important for autonomous driving. This paper presents a low-cost mapping solution that is able to refine and align the monocular reconstructed point cloud given a public street map. Specifically, we first find the association between the street map and the reconstructed point cloud structure by a novel graph-based geolocalization method. Then, optimized with the corresponding relationship, the map accuracy is significantly improved. The rich environment information can also be associated with the point cloud by the geographical location. Experiments show that our geolocalization algorithm can locate the scene on a gigantic city-scale map (173.46 km2) in two minutes and support 3D map reconstruction with absolute scale and rich environmental information from Internet videos.

Abstract:Almost all current location-based augmented reality (AR) services on smart phone are based on GPS and compass. However, in general GPS cannot work in the indoor environment. In this paper, we propose a WLAN-based positioning system for AR services using fingerprint architecture. Taking the feature of AR service into account, fingerprint architecture is improved in the system by the following methods: (1) Considering the power limitation of smart phone, we use k-d tree and the best bin first (BBF) algorithm to replace the traditional linear scanning in order to reduce computational cost; (2) We take advantage of the compass used in AR to improve the KNN algorithm; (3) Other resources such as pose estimation in AR are also utilized to improve the performance. Our result shows that the accuracy, computational cost and real-time performance of the proposed system can meet the demand of common AR services on smart phone.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel image-based indoor navigation web application designed for mobile phone. It is inspired by Google Street View that features 360° imagery for navigation. Ordinary data collection of image based navigation systems implements panorama cameras, so it is difficult to be extended to indoor environment. On the other hand, they cannot provide timely updates because it requires immense image data. This paper introduces a ‘proof of concept’ which only uses ordinary organized photo collections instead of panoramic photo to guide people through the building. It implements SIFT (scale-invariant feature transform) feature detection and ANN (approximately nearest neighbor) search to provide positioning service. People can upload query images to obtain current position. It also enables information sharing by using IPM (inverse perspective mapping) technique to figure out distance from a single query image, and update the query image into the image collection correctly based on the distance calculation.

Abstract:The map recovery and fusion is a key issue in the application of large scale and long-term augmented reality (AR) scenarios. However, they are still not addressed well in an efficient and precise way, especially for complex industrial environments. In this article, we propose a map recovery and fusion strategy based on vision-inertial simultaneous localization and mapping. We first develop a heuristic strategy that can fast search and match map points among multiple maps, and can be used for efficient map fusion. For map recovery, we leverage the inertial sensors for short time motion estimation, and transform the previous lost map to the current map. Based on this strategy, a novel framework for collaborative AR is implemented and can parallelly run in multiple mobile devices in real time. Extensive experiments have been carried out on a public data set, and the results show that the proposed method can recovery and fuse multiple maps with high completeness and precision.

Abstract:Considering the drawback of the traditional iterative closest point(ICP) algorithm and the characteristics of the outdoor environment,a more effective ICP algorithm which is able to avoid the local minimum problem was presented for 3D map building under unknown outdoor environment.A new online multiview registration method and an offline registration method were proposed to resolve the problem of accumulative error.Finally by using a 3D laser radar and a mobile robot,an outdoor 3D map,which was necessary for the positioning and navigation of the mobile robot,was constructed successfully.The experimental results show that the method is fast,precise,robust and applicable to the complex and large outdoor environment.
Mobile Phone Indoor Scene Recognition Location Method Based on Semantic Constraint of Building Map

Abstract:At present, indoor localization is one of the core technologies of location-based services (LBS), and there exist numerous scenario-oriented application solutions. Visual features, as the main semantic information to help people understand the environment and thus occupy the dominant part, many techniques about indoor scene recognition are widely adopted. However, the engineering application problem of cell phone indoor scene recognition and localization has not been well solved due to insufficient semantic constraint information of building map and the immaturity of building map location anchors (MLA) matching positioning technology. To address the above problems, this paper proposes a cell phone indoor scene recognition and localization method with building map semantic constraints. Firstly, we build a library of geocoded entities for building map location anchors (MLA), which can provide users with "immersive" real-world building maps on the one hand and semantic anchor point constraints for cell phone positioning on the other. Secondly, using the improved YOLOv5s deep learning model carried on the mobile terminal, we recognize the universal map location anchors (MLA) elements in building scenes by cell phone camera video in real-time. Lastly, the spatial location of the scene elements obtained from the cell phone video recognition is matched with the building MLA to achieve real-time positioning and navigation. The experimental results show that the model recognition accuracy of this method is above 97.2%, and the maximum localization error is within the range of 0.775 m, and minimized to 0.5 m after applying the BIMPN road network walking node constraint, which can effectively achieve high positioning accuracy in the building scenes with rich MLA element information. In addition, the building map location anchors (MLA) has universal characteristics, and the positioning algorithm based on scene element recognition is compatible with the extension of indoor map data types, so this method has good prospects for engineering applications.

Abstract:Smartphones have become indispensable in our daily lives. Their various embedded sensors have inspired innovations in mobile applications—especially for indoor navigation. However, the accuracy, reliability and generalizability of navigation all continue to struggle in environments lacking a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). Pedestrian Dead Reckoning (PDR) is a popular method for indoor pedestrian navigation. Unfortunately, due to its fundamental principles, even a small navigation error will amplify itself, step by step, generally leading to the need for supplementary resources to maintain navigation accuracy. Virtually all mobile devices and most robots contain a basic camera sensor, which has led to the popularity of image-based localization, and vice versa. However, all of the image-based localization requires continuous images for uninterrupted positioning. Furthermore, the solutions provided by either image-based localization or a PDR are usually in a relative coordinate system. Therefore, this research proposes a system, which uses space resection-aided PDR with geo-referenced images of a previously mapped environment to enable seamless navigation and solve the shortcomings of PDR and image-based localization, and evaluates the performance of space resection with different assumptions using a smartphone. The indoor mobile mapping system (IMMS) is used for the effective production of geo-referenced images. The preliminary results indicate that the proposed algorithm is suitable for universal pedestrian indoor navigation, achieving the accuracy required for commercial applications.

Abstract:Abstract. A novel Laser-SLAM algorithm is presented for real indoor environment mobile mapping. SLAM algorithm can be divided into two classes, Bayes filter-based and graph optimization-based. The former is often difficult to guarantee consistency and accuracy in largescale environment mapping because of the accumulative error during incremental mapping. Graph optimization-based SLAM method often assume predetermined landmarks, which is difficult to be got in unknown environment mapping. And there most likely has large difference between the optimize result and the real data, because the constraints are too few. This paper designed a kind of sub-map method, which could map more accurately without predetermined landmarks and avoid the already-drawn map impact on agent’s location. The tree structure of sub-map can be indexed quickly and reduce the amount of memory consuming when mapping. The algorithm combined Bayes-based and graph optimization-based SLAM algorithm. It created virtual landmarks automatically by associating data of sub-maps for graph optimization. Then graph optimization guaranteed consistency and accuracy in large-scale environment mapping and improved the reasonability and reliability of the optimize results. Experimental results are presented with a laser sensor (UTM 30LX) in official buildings and shopping centres, which prove that the proposed algorithm can obtain 2D maps within 10cm precision in indoor environment range from several hundreds to 12000 square meter.

Abstract:Nowadays with the increase of high-rise buildings, emergency evacuation is an indispensable part of urban environment management. Due to various disaster incidents occurred in indoor environments, research has concentrated on ways to deal with the different difficulties of indoor emergency evacuation. Although global navigation satellite systems (GNSSs) such as global positioning system (GPS) come in handy in outdoor spaces, they are not of much use in enclosed places, where satellite signals cannot penetrate easily. Therefore, other approaches must be considered for pedestrian navigation to cope with the indoor positioning problem. Another problem in such environments is the information of the building indoor space. The majority of the studies has used prepared maps of the building, which limits their methodology to that specific study area. However, in this study we have proposed an end-to-end method that takes advantage of BIM model of the building, thereby applicable to every structure that has an equivalent building information model (BIM). Moreover, we have used a mixture of Wi-Fi fingerprinting and pedestrian dead reckoning (PDR) method with relatively higher accuracy compared to other similar methods for navigating the user to the exit point. For implementing PDR, we used the sensors in smartphones to calculate user steps and direction. In addition, the navigational information was superimposed on the smartphone screen using augmented reality (AR) technology, thus communicating the direction information in a user-friendly manner. Finally, the AR mobile emergency evacuation application developed was assessed with a sample audience. After an experience with the app, they filled out a questionnaire which was designed in the system usability scale test (SUS) format. The evaluation results showed that the app achieved an acceptable suitability for usage.

Abstract:Navigating in unknown big indoor environments with static 2D maps is a challenge, especially when time is a critical factor. In order to provide a mobile assistant, capable of supporting people while navigating in indoor locations, an accurate and reliable localization system is required in almost every corner of the building. We present a solution to this problem through a hybrid tracking system specifically designed for complex indoor spaces, which runs on mobile devices like smartphones or tablets. The developed algorithm only uses the available sensors built into standard mobile devices, especially the inertial sensors and the RGB camera. The combination of multiple optical tracking technologies, such as 2D natural features and features of more complex three-dimensional structures guarantees the robustness of the system. All processing is done locally and no network connection is needed. State-of-the-art indoor tracking approaches use mainly radio-frequency signals like Wi-Fi or Bluetooth for localizing a user. In contrast to these approaches, the main advantage of the developed system is the capability of delivering a continuous 3D position and orientation of the mobile device with centimeter accuracy. This makes it usable for localization and 3D augmentation purposes, e.g. navigation tasks or location-based information visualization.

Abstract:People have always relied on some form of instrument to assist them to get to their destination, from hand-drawn maps and compasses to technology-based navigation systems. Many individuals these days have a smartphone with them at all times, making it a common part of their routine. Using GPS technology, these cellphones offer applications such as Google Maps that let people find their way around the outside world. Indoor navigation, on the other hand, does not offer the same level of precision. The development of indoor navigation systems is continuously ongoing. Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, RFID, and computer vision are some of the existing technologies used for interior navigation in current systems. In this article, we discuss the shortcomings of current indoor navigation solutions and offer an alternative approach based on augmented reality and ARCore. Navigating an indoor environment is made easier with ARCore, which brings augmented reality to your smartphone or tablet.
Pedestrian Augmented Reality Navigator

Abstract:Navigation is often regarded as one of the most-exciting use cases for Augmented Reality (AR). Current AR Head-Mounted Displays (HMDs) are rather bulky and cumbersome to use and, therefore, do not offer a satisfactory user experience for the mass market yet. However, the latest-generation smartphones offer AR capabilities out of the box, with sometimes even pre-installed apps. Apple's framework ARKit is available on iOS devices, free to use for developers. Android similarly features a counterpart, ARCore. Both systems work well for small spatially confined applications, but lack global positional awareness. This is a direct result of one limitation in current mobile technology. Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSSs) are relatively inaccurate and often cannot work indoors due to the restriction of the signal to penetrate through solid objects, such as walls. In this paper, we present the Pedestrian Augmented Reality Navigator (PAReNt) iOS app as a solution to this problem. The app implements a data fusion technique to increase accuracy in global positioning and showcases AR navigation as one use case for the improved data. ARKit provides data about the smartphone's motion, which is fused with GNSS data and a Bluetooth indoor positioning system via a Kalman Filter (KF). Four different KFs with different underlying models have been implemented and independently evaluated to find the best filter. The evaluation measures the app's accuracy against a ground truth under controlled circumstances. Two main testing methods were introduced and applied to determine which KF works best. Depending on the evaluation method, this novel approach improved the accuracy by 57% (when GPS and AR were used) or 32% (when Bluetooth and AR were used) over the raw sensor data.
MagLoc-AR: Magnetic-Based Localization for Visual-Free Augmented Reality in Large-Scale Indoor Environments

Abstract:Accurate localization of a display device is essential for AR in large-scale environments. Visual-based localization is the most commonly used solution, but poses privacy risks, suffers from robustness issues and consumes high power. Wireless signal-based localization is a potential visual-free solution, but its accuracy is not enough for AR. In this paper, we present MagLoc-AR, a novel visual-free localization solution that achieves sufficient accuracy for some AR applications (e.g. AR navigation) in large-scale indoor environments. We exploit the location-dependent magnetic field interference that is ubiquitous indoors as a localization signal. Our method requires only a consumer-grade 9-axis IMU, with the gyroscope and acceleration measurements used to recover the motion trajectory, and the magnetic measurements used to register the trajectory to the global map. To meet the accuracy requirement of AR, we propose a mapping method to reconstruct a globally consistent magnetic field of the environment, and a localization method fusing the biased magnetic measurements with the network-predicted motion to improve localization accuracy. In addition, we provide the first dataset for both visual-based and geomagnetic-based localization in large-scale indoor environments. Evaluations on the dataset demonstrate that our proposed method is sufficiently accurate for AR navigation and has advantages over the visual-based methods in terms of power consumption and robustness.
