Abstract:<p>China's economic development is gradually transforming from an extensive expansion mode to a green development mode that pursues environmental quality and environmental benefits. To achieve economic growth and reduce environmental pollution at the same time is the essence of decoupling. This paper combines the Tapio decoupling model and the Stochastic Impacts by Regression on Population, Affluence, and Technology (STIRPAT) model to analyze the decoupling performance and driving factors of economic output and water environment pressure of provinces and cities in the Yangtze River Economic Belt from 2004 to 2018. The results show that the overall water environment pressure and economic growth of the Yangtze River Economic Belt have shown a positive trend (from weak decoupling to strong decoupling). Strong decoupling areas were identified in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River (Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan, and Chongqing), the middle reaches of the Yangtze River (Jiangxi, Hubei, and Hunan), and the lower reaches (Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Anhui). When compared with decoupling in the middle and lower reaches, the decoupling state of the upper reaches is unstable and tends to deteriorate. The driving factors of water environment pressure indicate that population size and urbanization are the main factors influencing wastewater discharge. The direction and size of the industrial structures are affected by policies and markets. Then, economic growth, fixed asset investment, and trade openness have had a positive impact on wastewater discharge. Technological progress and environmental regulations are important factors in controlling wastewater discharge. However, their current effect on wastewater discharge is not ideal. Therefore, while controlling the reasonable flow of population, each region should carry out industrial optimization and technological upgrading, and increase the management, capital, and technical support for the underdeveloped provinces of the Yangtze Economic Belt. This is necessary to achieve green economic development.</p>

Do China’s Urban–Environmental Quality and Economic Growth Conform to the Environmental Kuznets Curve?

Abstract:The environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) expresses the relationship between environmental quality and economic growth. Based on the defects of previous studies on EKC using only environmental pollution indicators, this study holds that environmental quality is the result of pollutants after treatment, absorption, and self-purification, including two dimensions of pollution and absorption. Therefore, the environmental pollution and absorption data of 74 key environmental monitoring cities in China from 2005 to 2017 were selected, and a comprehensive index of environmental quality was constructed using the vertical and horizontal grading method. Then, based on the relevant economic growth indicators of these cities, they were divided into first-tier and new first-tier, second-tier, third-tier, and below. It was found that the EKC of the total sample, the first-tier and new first-tier cities, and the second-tier cities presented an inverted N-shape and had passed the second inflection point, where environmental quality continues to improve with the deepening of economic growth. There was no EKC in the third-tier and below cities. The findings have important implications. China can cross the second inflection point of the EKC and improve environmental quality at a low income level. Therefore, by vigorously developing cleaner production technologies and raising residents’ awareness of environmental protection, it is possible to improve environmental quality at a lower income level than expected, which provides a useful reference for other developing countries.

Abstract:In Zaozhuang, economic development affects the discharge amount of industrial wastewater, chemical oxygen demand (COD), and ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N). To reveal the trend of water environmental quality related to the economy in Zaozhuang, this paper simulated the relationships between industrial wastewater discharge, COD, NH3-N load, and gross domestic product (GDP) per capita for Zaozhuang (2002–2012) using environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) models. The results showed that the added value of industrial GDP, the per capita GDP, and wastewater emission had average annual growth rates of 16.62, 16.19, and 17.89 %, respectively, from 2002 to 2012, while COD and NH3-N emission in 2012, compared with 2002, showed average annual decreases of 10.70 and 31.12 %, respectively. The export of EKC models revealed that industrial wastewater discharge had a typical inverted-U-shaped relationship with per capita GDP. However, both COD and NH3-N showed the binding curve of the left side of the “U” curve and left side U-shaped curve. The economy in Zaozhuang had been at the “fast-growing” stage, with low environmental pollution according to the industrial pollution level. In recent years, Zaozhuang has abated these heavy-pollution industries emphatically, so pollutants have been greatly reduced. Thus, Zaozhuang industrial wastewater treatment has been quite effective, with water quality improved significantly. The EKC models provided scientific evidence for estimating industrial wastewater discharge, COD, and NH3-N load as well as their changeable trends for Zaozhuang from an economic perspective.

An Integrated Specification for the Nexus of Water Pollution and Economic Growth in China: Panel Cointegration, Long-Run Causality and Environmental Kuznets Curve

Abstract:This paper concentrates on a Chinese context and makes efforts to develop an integrated process to explicitly elucidate the relationship between economic growth and water pollution discharge-chemical oxygen demand (COD) discharge and ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N), using two unbalanced panel data sets covering the period separately from 1990 to 2014, and 2001 to 2014. In our present study, the panel unit root tests, cointegration tests, and Granger causality tests allowing for cross-sectional dependence, nonstationary, and heterogeneity are conducted to examine the causal effects of economic growth on COD/NH3-N discharge. Further, we simultaneously apply semi-parametric fixed effects estimation and parametric fixed effects estimation to investigate environmental Kuznets curve relationship for COD/NH3-N discharge. Our empirical results show a long-term bidirectional causality between economic growth and COD/NH3-N discharge in China. Within the Stochastic Impacts by Regression on Population, Affluence and Technology framework, we find evidence in support of an inverted U-shaped curved link between economic growth and COD/NH3-N discharge. To the best of our knowledge, there have not been any efforts made in investigating the nexus of economic growth and water pollution in such an integrated manner. Therefore, this study takes a fresh look on this topic.

Abstract:This paper investigates the relationship between economic development and environmental quality with environmental Kuznets curve during the period of 1991 to 2004 for Jiangsu province.The regression results on EKC indicate that the regular EKC is not supported,but it follows an N-shaped curve,that is the inverted-U relationship initially,but the relationship between environmental pressure and income is positive again,environment quality deteriorates at last.We analyze the mechanism of EKC from the industrial aspect by using the industrial data of Jiangsu province.It is found that(1) pollution intensity of most industries drops to some extent.(2) Sectoral pollution intensities don't change too much.(3) environmental Kuznets curve is rising.This paper holds that we should not only rely on economic development itself to solve environment deterioration,the turning point doesn't appear automatically.Efficient policies cooperating environment and economy is necessary to achieve sustainable growth.
"Green" economic development in China: quantile regression evidence from the Yangtze River Economic Belt

Abstract:As China's economy began transitioning from one focused on high-speed growth to one focusing on high-quality development, sustainable green development has become the main goal pursued by the government. This study empirically measures the marginal impact of per capita GDP, technological innovation level, industrial structure, openness, fiscal decentralization, and urbanization level on per capita wastewater discharge in 11 provinces (cities) along the Yangtze River Economic Belt (YREB) from 2008 to 2018 using a quantile model. The key findings were as follows: (1) factors such as the per capita GDP, industrial structure, foreign direct investment, and urbanization in the YREB significantly increased water resource pollution; (2) the quantile model regression results showed that the relationship between economic growth and ecological pollution followed the so-called environmental Kuznets inverted U-curve. Wastewater discharge per capita was low in areas with low per capita GDP, meaning that the ecological environment in these areas was more fragile and that the environmental pollution costs due to economic growth were therefore relatively much higher in these areas; (3) fiscal decentralization significantly reduced water resource pollution in relatively developed areas although the effects in the relatively developing areas were not significant; and (4) the effects of technological innovation on reducing water resource pollution in the YREB were positive but not very significant. The results also confirmed that traditional patterns of economic growth increased water pollution in the YREB. For this reason, the government needs to urgently improve policies-for example, upgrading economic structures, preventing over-urbanization, speeding up technological innovation, introducing environmentally friendly foreign investment, and providing more rewards to best practitioners of environmental governance-that is conducive to the achievement of green ecological development.
Relationship Between Industrial Water Consumption and Economic Growth in China Based on Environmental Kuznets Curve

Abstract:Global inequity and the unbalance of water resources has been a critical issue for many years; and the Chinese per capita water resources are only 1/4 of the global average. Meanwhile, as the Chinese economy is growing rapidly, the demand of Chinese industrial water use is also increasing. In this case, it is important to balance the relationship between economic growth and industrial water use. In this study, a reduction model is established for the northeastern, northern coastal, eastern coastal, southern coastal, middle Yellow River, middle Yangtze River, southwestern, and northwestern regions to verify the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) for their respective industrial water use and provide theoretical support for decision making from an economic perspective. It adopts the per capita industrial water use and GDP of the eight economic zones from 2002 to 2014. The unit root test and co-integration test were adopted to analyze the stationarity of the data, and the triple reduction model was used for the fitting of variables. The relationship between per capita industrial water use and GDP showed an inverted U-shaped curve from 2002 to 2014 for China, as well as for the eastern coastal and middle Yangtze River regions, with the coordinates of the turning points being (9.8749, 4.6735), (10.3098, 5.4783), and (9.8184, 5.0622), respectively. The per capita GDP at the turning point of the inverted U-shaped curve is 18,000–30,000 Yuan (at constant prices from 2000). This study provides important thoughts and lessons for collaborative research into the relationship between industrial water consumption and economic development. The central government should focus on the central and western regions when creating policies for water resource management and technological development to improve their industrial water use efficiency.

Abstract:China's economy has been under tremendous pressure due to the decoupling from the United States, leading to a prolonged economic downturn. In response, the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee has introduced the concept of “internal circulation”, aiming to stimulate domestic demand and provide new momentum for economic growth. This study examines the relationship between high-quality economic development and environmental regulations by analyzing panel data from 33 cities over an 18-year period. The paper constructs comprehensive indexes for measuring high-quality economic growth and environmental regulation using the entropy method, followed by the variance inflation factor test to detect multicollinearity. The implications of this study are significant for policymakers who strive to achieve high-quality economic development with environmental sustainability. The results indicate that environmental regulation can act as a new driver of high-quality economic growth, emphasizing the need to continue strengthening environmental regulation. Therefore, we recommend that the policymakers should prioritize environmental protection in policy-making, striving to achieve a balance between economic growth and environmental sustainability.
The Relationships Between Industrial Pollution Intensity and Economic Growth Based on Intensity Environment Kuznets Curve: Study on China'S Pilot Cities

Abstract:In order to enrich the study of Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) on pollution intensity, we analyze the relationship between industrial pollution intensity (pollution per GDP) and economic growth (GDP per capita) using data 1993-2012 from 46 Chinese pilot cities. Our study tracks seven types of industrial pollution intensity: wastewater, COD, waste gas, SO2, soot, dust, and solid waste emissions. The relationship statistically follows two stages: industrial pollution intensity begets a rapid initial decrease with development of economy in the first stage and then the reduction rates gradually stabilized in the second stage. Such a curve is named IEKC (Intensity Environmental Kuznets Curve) in this paper. Power function model is suitable for quantitatively describing this hypothesis and a parameter from the model named elasticity coefficient of sustainability (ECS) is utilized for urban sustainability assessment. We find that China cities have a higher level of sustainability in the relationships between industrial wastewater, chemical oxygen demand (COD), dust, soot, and economic growth than the other three pollutants. 'The after effect' could be revealed from studying the relationship between ECS and economic development: cities at medium level of economic development usually have greater ECS values than developed ones because the former have learned the latter's experience of political governance on economy-environment relationship and introduced mature/advanced pollution-controlling technologies.
EVALUATION AND PROSPECT ON THE DECOUPLING TREND OF ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND WATER ENVIRONMENT PRESSURE IN CHINA

Abstract:According to the literature research and data collection,the evaluation model of the decoupling potentiality is given,to analyze the decoupling trend of economic development and water environment pressure of water conservancy stages during 1986-2010,based on the IPAT model and elastic analysis method.The results show that the decoupling trend of economic development and wastewater total amount was weak generally,which was weak in the Seventh Five Year Plan period and Eight Five Year Plan period.Although the decoupling trend of economic development and wastewater total amount was weak in the Nine Five Year Plan period,the decoupling trend was not obvious.The wastewater discharge amount was further increased in the Ten Five Year Plan period and Eleven Five Year Plan period.It means that the wastewater discharge amount was not controlled strictly,and kept in the sustainable growth.The decoupling trend of economic development and COD of industrial wastewater experienced the process of "strong decoupling-weak decoupling-strong decoupling".The decoupling trend of economic development and COD of industrial wastewater was strong in the Seventh Five Year Plan period.Although the decoupling trend of economic development and COD of industrial wastewater was weak in the Eight Five Year Plan period,the decoupling trend of economic development and COD of industrial wastewater was strong in the Nine Five Year Plan period,Ten Five Year Plan period and Eleven Five Year Plan period.Generally,the decoupling trend of economic development and COD of industrial wastewater was strong,accorded with the situation of industrial modernization at present.In the process of economic development,the COD of industrial wastewater was declined,but the COD of cities and countries wastewater and COD of countries breeding industry was increased.Then,according to the changing trend of Kuznets curve of water environment,the wastewater total amount forecasting of general development with Kuznets curve model was given,the results of wastewater total amount was modified combined with country develop program,and the feasibility analysis of the decoupling of water environment pressure was given from the angles of soc-policy and eco-technology.The decoupling trend of economic development and water environment pressure is strong absolutely in 2020,to improve and purify water environment.

Abstract:Based on the famous Environmental Kuznets Curve and in the light of the economical and environmental data from 1985 to 2004 in Nanjing City,the interrelations between economical and environmental factors were analyzed and the dynamic regression models were also established using SPSS and Excel software.The results indicated that the correlation of the discharge amount of industrial water and GDP per capital does not fit the inverted U Environmental Kuznets Curve,but the N shape of cubic model with two turning points,at 9 000 yuan and 29 000 yuan respectively,possibly being the result of rapid change of industry structure.The correlations between the discharge amount of industrial gas and solid and GDP per capital both fit the Environmental Kuznets Curve well,and their turning points arrive early,being around 30 000 yuan and 39 000 yuan respectively.According to the turning point criterion of $500 in developed countries,the discharge amount of industrial gas and solid arrive the turning point earlier than in developed countries.As for the discharge amount of industrial three waste in Nanjing City,it can be concluded that: not all types of environmental indicators fit the Environmental Kuznets Curve relationship,and only the pollutants of industrial gas and solid have the character;economical factor only accounts for about 40% of the discharge amount of industrial water,and other factors,such as environmental policy and environmental planning,can basically explain about 60% of the discharge amount of industrial water;efficient policy and huge investment in environment have brought the turning point forward.
Do environmental regulation and urbanization help decouple economic growth from water consumption at national and subnational scales in China?

Abstract:Moving to economic growth without water consumption growth is essential to sustainability of both water and economy. This work is aimed to estimate the decoupling state between economic growth and water consumption and then to investigate the effects of urbanization and environmental regulation on water consumption at national and subnational scales using panel data of 30 provinces in China from 2004 to 2019. The decoupling results show that (i) there are only two types between China’s water consumption and economic growth: weak decoupling (80%) and strong decoupling (20%); (ii) the weak decoupling has transitioned to strong decoupling after 2013; and that (iii) the decoupling degree of the water-poor region is weaker than that of the water-rich region. The results of causal relationships estimation show that an average 1% increase in urbanization level and environmental regulation leads to 0.3359% and 0.0104% drop in water consumption, respectively, which indicates that urbanization and environmental regulation have inhibited water consumption at the national scale. At the subnational sale, the effects of environmental regulation and urbanization on water consumption are heterogeneous. An average 1% increase in environmental regulation led to only a 0.0161% drop in water consumption in the water-poor region, whereas an average 1% increase in urbanization level led to only a 0.9838% drop in water consumption in the water-rich region. This means that the inhibition of environmental regulation on water use appears in the water-poor region, while the inhibition of urbanization is more prominent in the water-rich region.Graphical abstract

Abstract:The caudal mediastinal lymph node (CMN) has several efferent lymph vessels in most sheep. When investigators cannulate one of the CMN efferent vessels in order to collect lung lymph, it is possible that lymph may be shunted between the cannulated vessel and other vessels which drain from the CMN into the systemic veins. If shunting does occur then an increase in venous pressure could cause lymph to be shunted to the cannulated lymph vessel. This would increase the flow of lymph from the cannula and could falsely indicate that lung lymph flow had increased. To test this possibility we cannulated CMN efferent vessels in 7 sheep and then used a balloon to raise the pressure in the superior vena cava. Because uncannulated CMN efferent vessels ultimately drain into the superior vena cava, an increase in pressure may cause lymph to be shunted through the lymph cannula. We found, however, that lymph flow increased in only one of seven sheep and conclude that lymph shunting is uncommon when operative preparation includes meticulous ligation of collateral common efferent lymph vessels.

Abstract:The city plays a significant role in the economic and social development in China.However,the rapid economic growth of the city has been followed by the enormous resources consumption and great pressures on the environment.In 2005,the per capita GDP exceeds $5000 in Beijing,which equals the one in mid-period of the industrialization and in the heavy-industry.Beijing is in the period of the special development and in the background of holding the Olympic Games 2008,which makes the issue significant that impels the decoupling between the resources consumption,the environmental emissions and the economic growth through the integrated decisions.Taking Beijing as a case,this paper aims to verify the Environmental Kuznets Curve hypothesis and its conditions.This paper builds up an econometric model using the data in Beijing during 1990-2004,analyzing the trace of EKC evolution and stage characteristics for ten types of environmental indicators.It shows that except that industrial waste gas emission indicator and industrial waste solid indicator are shown as N-shape,all other indicators are decreasing or inverted U-shaped.This shows that the environmental indicators have surpassed the EKC peaks and slowly step into the decoupling.Furthermore,we introduce the definition of intensity EKC cluster and compare the harmonious state by determining the relative positions of different cities in a coordinate.Using the Press-State-Response(PSR) policy analysis,we further discuss the driving elements for Beijing's EKC evolution from environmental policy,industrial structure and technology development.
The Relationship Between Pollutant Emission and Economic Development in Shandong Province

Abstract:With the Environmental Kuznets Curve(EKC),the relationship between environmental pollutant emission and economic development in Shandong Province was studied in this paper.The environmental pollution indexes included the effective emissions of industrial wastewater,SO2,smokes,and industrial total solid wastes.Based on the cubic polynomial regression analysis with GDP per capita as independent variable,EKC model was established to describe the changing trend of environmental pollution indexes from 1981 to 2006.The main results are as follows:(1) The Environmental Kuznets Curves of all of the four environmental pollution indexes present an N-shaped pattern.(2) Emissions of industrial wastes have passed through the peak turning points of Environmental Kuznets Curves,which means environmental pollution has been improved in recent years.During the period from 2004 to 2006,the environmental pollution is situated at the valley turning point,which means the emissions of industrial waste may rebound in the future.(3) The complex interactions are determined by such two characteristics as industrial structure and environmental protection policy.For sustainable development,industrial structure should be optimized to reduce the proportion of pollution industries,meanwhile,policies in finance,taxation,and environmental protection should be improved and investment for pollution prevention should be increased.
On the Coupling and Coordination Development between Environment and Economy: A Case Study in the Yangtze River Delta of China

Abstract:The coupling and coordination development of the environment and economy (CC2E) is one of the most vital issues to sustainable development. This paper adopted the coupling coordination model, projection pursuit algorithm, and random forest model to explore the spatial-temporal evolution and influencing factors of the CC2E in the Yangtze River Delta from 2015 to 2019, respectively. The results showed that: (1) The degree of coupling coordination (DCC) of the CC2E in most cities of the Yangtze River Delta has risen from primary coordination to intermediate coordination. (2) In the spatial perspective, the distribution of DCC is correlated with geographical location. The value of DCC in the western region was significantly lower than that of the eastern cities. (3) The influencing factors results showed that the GDP in the economic subsystem and the annual average concentration of PM2.5 in the environmental subsystem were the most influencing factors of DCC in the Yangtze River Delta. The established index system of CC2E and the measurements of CC2E provide a new idea for how to achieve sustainable development. Meanwhile, this study can provide recommendations for formulating the environmental protection and economic development policy.

Abstract:With increasing ecological damage caused by regional development, many countries seek to promote sustainable development through spatial regulation. This study treated China's development of National Key Ecological Functional Zones (NKEFZ) as a quasi–natural experiment, applying a time–varying difference–in–differences model to data from 148 water quality monitoring cross–section points of major river systems in China from 2004 to 2018. The results revealed that NKEFZ improved the mean of comprehensive water quality (CWQ) and individual water quality indicators of dissolved oxygen and ammonia nitrogen content index by restricting urbanization and increasing government investment. The mean value of CWQ was improved by about 0.22 grades, and the optimization effect of spatial regulation on average water quality was more prominent in coastal cities, cities with high–pollution levels, and large–sized cities. Nevertheless, the impact of NKEFZ on water quality exhibited a "Matthew effect", in which NKEFZ were not effective in improving the bottom line standard of water quality in the pilot zones, as NKEFZ did not significantly improve the peak values of CWQ or individual pollutant indicator. In addition, an economic effect estimation indicated that NKEFZ significantly facilitated local economic growth and primary industry development and had a significantly negative impact on secondary industry growth and foreign investment. This study contributes new evidence for measuring the effect of the trans–regional spatial regulation, eliciting policy implications for improving ecological spatial regulation and incentive mechanisms, and promoting the sustainable development of the regional environment and economy.

Abstract:The coordinated development of the economy, water resources, and environment is key to the concept of sustainable development. In this study, in respect to the water footprint, it calculated the water resource input and sewage dilution for the Yangling Agricultural Demonstration Area during the agricultural economic growth period from 1999 to 2019. This study also established the Tapio decoupling analysis model on this basis to study the decoupling relationship between economic growth and the water resource environment, as well as its evolution law. A residual free-complete decomposition model was introduced to analyze the influence of the water resource input and sewage dilution on the agricultural economic growth in the Yangling Demonstration Area and its transmission mechanism. The results showed the following: (1) the economic growth and the blue and green water footprints of the Yangling Demonstration Area were decoupled from one another from 1999 to 2019, and the degree of decoupling between economic growth and the grey-water footprint was poor, indicating that economic growth had a more obvious promotion effect on the reduction of water resource consumption, and the pressure on the water environment was increased year by year; (2) the main factor affecting the reduction of water resource consumption in the Yangling Demonstration Area was the effect of technology, and this was greater than the effect of water resource consumption increments resulting from the expansion of the economic scale; (3) the progress of environmental governance technology was the main reason for the decrease in the grey-water footprint in the Yangling Demonstration Area. To improve the quality of our economic development, the pattern of economic development should be transformed to regulate economic growth and expand the scale, reducing water consumption, improving pollutant emission control technology, and making full use of water resources to provide evidence for a reasonable water resource management policy.

Abstract:As the Chinese economy enters the stage of new normal, high-quality economic development has become the current priority. Economic development should not be achieved at the cost of environment and resources. Clarifying the interactive relationship between water environment pollution and the quality of economic growth can help realize water environment protection and sustainable economic development. Based on the data of 30 provinces and cities in China, this paper studies the bidirectional mechanism between water environmental pollution and the quality of economic growth with the dynamic simultaneous equations model. The paper concludes that environmental pollution and the quality of regional economy growth have strong hysteretic nature; And that water environmental pollution and the development of regional economy display the relationship of bidirectional feedback. Discharge of pollutants into the water environment can inhibit high-quality development of regional economy. As the intensity of water environmental pollution increases by 1%, the quality of regional economic growth decreases by 0.0230%; Hence as the quality of regional economic growth increases by 1%, the intensity of water environmental pollution increases by 0.148%. Therefore, sustainable economic development should be attached with due significance, by removing the factors of environmental pollution, timely adjusting environmental policies, and promoting harmony between ecological environment and economic growth.

Abstract:<p>The Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) is an important tool to analyze the relationship between environment and per capital income. But two significant issues have been overlooked: why some points are above the EKC while others are below it? And what factors caused this phenomenon? Based on the data of 30 provinces in China over 2005–2016, this paper aimed to solve the above two questions. For the first question, we take the point on EKC as the theoretical pollution emission value of the different economic development stages; and use the difference between the theoretical pollution emission and the actual pollution emission under the same per capita income as the pollution emission efficiency. The difference value is used to reflect whether the pollution emission of the corresponding economic development stage of each region exceeds the standard and by how much. The result shows that most of the provinces with low pollution emissions concentrated in the north of the Yangtze River. Great progress has been made in China's pollution reduction work during 2015–2016. Then, for the second question, through the analysis of multiple mediating effects, we find that Environmental regulation, industrial transfer, proportion of output value of heavy pollution industry, energy consumption structure and energy using efficiency are important determinants to the pollution emission efficiency in Chinese province.</p>
