Abstract:In this study, we developed a gas sensing platform that can sensitively and specifically detect trace H2S in a high-humidity atmosphere at RT. Upon integrating a carbon nitride (C3N4) nanofilm and molybdenum dioxide (MoO2) nanosheets onto nanojungle-like TiO2 nanotube arrays (TiNTs), the fabricated chemiresistor showed rapid response (38 s)/recovery (58 s) abilities and remarkable detection sensitivity for H2S at concentrations down to 2 ppb, with an estimated detection limit of 1.13 ppb at RT and room-environmental light (REL). Importantly, the gas sensor exhibited satisfactory H2S sensing performance even in dark conditions with a response of 1.9 at 200 ppb. In this design, apart from the architectural advantages of the nanojungle-like TiNTs for accelerating the gas flow efficiency and the abundant sensing sites provided by the C3N4 film, the MoO2 nanosheets act as the essential electron pump not only for the H2S response but also for the subsequent recovery process in air. After employing the MoO2 pump onto C3N4/TiNTs, the response time and recovery time of the system are shortened to ∼35 and ∼11%, respectively. Moreover, we demonstrated the good performance of the flexible gas sensor in detecting trace H2S in human exhaled breath with good humidity resistance. These results highlight the possibility of designing chemiresistors operating in RT and REL conditions and to use these environmentally friendly TiO2-based sensors in real applications.
Exploiting Free-Standing p-CuO/n-TiO 2 Nanochannels as a Flexible Gas Sensor with High Sensitivity for H 2 S at Room Temperature

Abstract:Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is an extremely hazardous gas and is harmful to human health and the environment. Here, we developed a flexible H2S gas-sensing device operated at room temperature (25 °C) based on CuO nanoparticles coated with free-standing TiO2-nanochannel membranes that were prepared by simple electrochemical anodization. Benefiting from the modulated conductivity of the CuO/TiO2 p–n heterojunction and a unique nanochannel architecture, the traditional thermal energy was innovatively replaced with UV irradiation (λ = 365 nm) to provide the required energy for triggering the sensing reactions of H2S. Importantly, upon exposure to H2S, the p–n heterojunction is destroyed and the newly formed ohmic contact forms an antiblocking layer at the interface of CuS and TiO2, thus making the sensing device active at room temperature. The resulting CuO/TiO2 membrane exhibited a notable detection sensitivity for H2S featuring a minimum detection limit of 3.0 ppm, a response value of 46.81% against 100 ppm H2S gas, and a rapid response and recovery time. This sensing membrane also demonstrated excellent durability, long-term stability, and wide-range response to a concentration of up to 400 ppm in the presence of 40% humidity as well as outstanding flexibility and negligible change in electrical measurements under various mechanical stability tests. Abstract:High selectivity to specific analyte is essential for chemical sensors but difficult to achieve. For most chemical sensors, although the response to the target analyte can be more significant than interference analytes, they still show obvious responses to the interference analytes. Here, highly selective chemical sensors are developed with negligible responses to other interference vapors. Instead of the widely investigated electronically conductive metal-organic frameworks (EC-MOFs), ionically conductive MOFs (IC-MOFs) are used as the sensing materials, and the unique interaction between the ion charge carrier and the analyte is utilized to achieve high sensing selectivity. Through the modulation of the metal nodes (Cu, Co, Ni, Zn, Mg) and organic ligands (H2TCPP, H2THPP, H4BTEC), sensor arrays based on a set of IC-MOFs are fabricated and achieve highly selective detection toward volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs). H2S and CH3SH can be selectively detected at concentrations down to 1 ppb and 1 ppm, respectively. The facile preparation and low cost endow the device with disposability. These results suggest new approaches for the development of highly selective chemical sensors.
T‐Cell Receptor Alpha Haplotype influences Vα Epitope Expression on both Cortisone‐Resistant Thymocytes and Lymph Node T Cells

Abstract:We have previously described a mouse strain congenic for the T‐cell receptor alpha chain locus (Tcra). The strain, B10.D2.C‐Tcraa/Bo, carries the Tcraa haplotype of BALB/c instead of the Tcraa haplotype normally found in B10.D2. By comparing B10.D2.C‐Tcraa and B10.D2 mice, we now show that the Tcra haplotype influences the frequencies of Vα8 epitope expression on T cells detected by the novel B21.14 monoclonal antibody (MoAb). This finding agrees well with our previous observation that Tcra haplotype influences the frequencies of expression of two other Vα8 epitopes, detected by the KT50 and KT65 MoAbs. The specificities of the three Vα8‐specific MoAbs were compared by scatter diagram analysis of staining frequencies obtained in individual mice. The B21.14 and KT50 MoAbs appear to have very similar specificities; these two MoAbs stain slightly more αβ T cells than the KT65 MoAb. Investigations with another novel MoAb, the Vα2‐specific B20.1, revealed that the Tcra haplotype also influences the frequency of Vα2 epitope expression. The effect of the Tcra haplotype on Vα2 epitope expression was evident not only among lymph node T cells but also among mature, cortisone‐resistant thymocytes. Thus, the influence of the Tcra haplotype is imprinted already in the thymus. The most likely explanations for Tcra haplotype dependency of Vα epitope expression are differing numbers of Vα‐gene segment subfamily members and/or allelic polymorphism. The significance of Tcra haplotype‐dependent Vα epitope expression is discussed.

Abstract:Tungsten oxide (WO3) has been intensely investigated as an important gas-sensing materials. Here the sensitive and selective H2S gas sensors based on WO3 quantum dots that were synthesized via a colloidal process using WCl6 ethanol solutions mixed with oleic acid and oleylamine were demonstrated. The solution processability of the colloidal WO3 quantum dots enabled a room-temperature sensor fabrication without high-temperature sintering. The optimal sensor response toward 50 ppm of H2S is 57 with the response time of 47 s, and the response was fully recoverable upon H2S release at 80 degrees C. The sensing mechanism was discussed by using first-principles calculation based on density functional theory (DFT). Their highly sensitive and fast response at lower operating temperature, combined with the benefit of ease fabrication, make the colloidal tungsten oxide quantum dots highly attractive for the construction of low cost gas sensor with reduced power consumption. Abstract:Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is not only a hazardous gas harmful to environment, but is also a marker molecule for periodontitis. In this study, a sensitive H2S sensing chip was developed based on Pt nanocluster (NC) decorated TiO2@ZnFe2O4 nanotube arrays for room temperature (RT) operation. Benefiting from the plentiful defects induced by PtNC and the selectivity of ZnFe2O4 towards H2S, high sensing response and excellent specificity were achieved by the resulting sensing chips. The abundant energetic active defects (Ov and Pt+δ species) were mainly responsible for triggering the sensing reactions of H2S in the absence of traditional thermal energy and UV irradiation. Based on the excellent electron transfer properties and the electron-extracting effect of PtNC, the resulting samples exhibited a remarkably high sensitivity for H2S with a low limit of detection of 0.43 ppb and a response value of 16.6 towards 10 ppm H2S gas. This sensing chip also displayed good selectivity, reproducibility (RSD < 3 %), and long-term storage stability (RSD < 4 %). The successful application of PtNC provides a novel way to improve the sensing performance of metal oxide semiconductor-based chemiresistor gas sensors at RT.

Abstract:Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) gas is one of the highly toxic, lethal, and corrosive gases in the environment that can cause a series of inimical effects after human exposure. Therefore, developing gas-sensitive nanomaterials that could effectively detect the ultralow concentration of H2S is of utmost significance. In this study, a perovskite quantum dot (QD) structure is synthesized through a simple solution method in which CsPbBr3 QDs are surface capped with tributyltin oxide (TBTO). It was employed as a chemiresistor to H2S, exhibiting exceptional repeatability, superior selectivity, and an ultralow limit of detection of 250 ppb with a response sensitivity of 0.58 at room temperature, which is the highest value for H2S sensors based on metal-halide perovskite structure. The response/recovery time is 278/730 s at a 100 ppm concentration of H2S. Furthermore, we proposed the sensing mechanism of dispersion-sensing effect of the metallo-organic ligand by theory calculation to explain the excellent response performance. The chemical adsorption sensitivity of the related chemical groups is amended when the metallo-organic molecular is engrossed on the surface of CsPbBr3 QDs and becomes an isolated ligand. Thus, the H2S molecule is first absorbed by the isolated TBTO molecule, which prevents H2S from penetrating the perovskite CsPbBr3, forming a Pb–S bond, and damaging the sensing performance. Meanwhile, the H2S adsorption also affects the charge distribution of the internal CsPbBr3 QDs through a metallo-organic TBTO molecule, enhancing the sensitivity and response to H2S. Overall, the nanomaterial’s structure and gas response mechanism could be extended to detecting other gases.

Abstract:Coming from natural and anthropogenic sources, hydrogen sulfide gas (H2S) is a smelly hazardous substance at the sub-ppm level, which can lead to poisoning deaths at higher concentrations. Researchers have been working for decades to design sensors with sufficient/good/robust metrological properties and good stability in order to monitor and control in real time the risk associated with this gas. Among the devices proposed, chemiresistive sensors based on conductive polymer appear as a good alternative to the most common solutions such as electrochemical and optical sensors. They present various advantages in terms of design (easy fabrication, easy tuning of physical and chemical properties, low cost, etc.) and performances (good sensitivity, good reproducibility, room temperature operation, short response time, etc.). In this review, we summarize the progresses made on conductive polymer sensors dedicated to H2S detection, including the performance of the different materials and sensing mechanisms. Finally, we identify the limitations of these sensors and highlight the most promising approaches to enable the use of these technologies in real-world applications.

Identification of H2S Impurity in Hydrogen Using Temperature Modulated Metal Oxide Resistive Sensors with a Novel Signal Processing Technique

Abstract:We report here on the results of a study on the response of copper oxide (p-type and mixed) based, low-power microelectromechanical (MEMS) gas sensors to parts per million (ppm) levels of hydrogen sulfide in a hydrogen atmosphere. It is shown that a thermally modulated metal oxide gas sensor can be used for the identification of the H2S impurity in a reducing environment without the need for a reference gas or baseline signal. It was found that by using this material with a method of transient frequency analysis, a resistive gas sensor can operate reliably in a harsh environment, e.g., pure hydrogen and elevated humidity levels. A linear response in gas concentration was obtained from the analysis of transient sensor signal. This novel temperature modulation technique is more effective than an isothermal method where H2 background is introduced, due to the elimination of drift and additive noise in the sensor response that limits the practical utilization of these low-cost sensors.

C60Br24/SWCNT: A Highly Sensitive Medium to Detect H2S via Inhomogeneous Carrier Doping

Abstract:H2S is a toxic and corrosive gas, whose accurate detection at sub-ppm concentrations is of high practical importance in environmental, industrial, and health safety applications. Herein, we propose a chemiresistive sensor device that applies a composite of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and brominated fullerene (C60Br24) as a sensing component, which is capable of detecting 50 ppb H2S even at room temperature with an excellent response of 1.75% in a selective manner. In contrast, a poor gas response of pristine C60-based composites was found in control measurements. The experimental results are complemented by density functional theory calculations showing that C60Br24 in contact with SWCNTs induces localized hole doping in the nanotubes, which is increased further when H2S adsorbs on C60Br24 but decreases in the regions, where direct adsorption of H2S on the nanotubes takes place due to electron doping from the analyte. Accordingly, the heterogeneous chemical environment in the composite results in spatial fluctuations of hole density upon gas adsorption, hence influencing carrier transport and thus giving rise to chemiresistive sensing.
Highly Selective H2S Gas Sensor Based on Ti3C2Tx MXene-Organic Composites

Abstract:Cost-effective and high-performance H2S sensors are required for human health and environmental monitoring. 2D transition-metal carbides and nitrides (MXenes) are appealing candidates for gas sensing due to good conductivity and abundant surface functional groups but have been studied primarily for detecting NH3 and VOCs, with generally positive responses that are not highly selective to the target gases. Here, we report on a negative response of pristine Ti3C2Tx thin films for H2S gas sensing (in contrast to the other tested gases) and further optimization of the sensor performance using a composite of Ti3C2Tx flakes and conjugated polymers (poly[3,6-diamino-10-methylacridinium chloride-co-3,6-diaminoacridine-squaraine], PDS-Cl) with polar charged nitrogen. The composite, preserving the high selectivity of pristine Ti3C2Tx, exhibits an H2S sensing response of 2% at 5 ppm (a thirtyfold sensing enhancement) and a low limit of detection of 500 ppb. In addition, our density functional theory calculations indicate that the mixture of MXene surface functional groups needs to be taken into account to describe the sensing mechanism and the selectivity of the sensor in agreement with the experimental results. Thus, this report extends the application range of MXene-based composites to H2S sensors and deepens the understanding of their gas sensing mechanisms.

Abstract:Copepods are the key group in aquatic ecosystems, and play an important role in energy flow, the cycle of materials and information transfer. This paper summarized the distribution and composition of the copepods that spawn resting eggs in the estuarine and coastal marine areas. It also reviewed the survival time, hatching rates, abundance of resting eggs in the sediments, and the potential recruitment into the plankton population as correlated with environmental factors. The prospects of copepod resting egg ecology were also proposed in order to provide new ideas for future research.
Response Enhancement in High-Temperature H2S-Treated Metal Oxide Gas Sensors

Abstract:Metal oxide gas sensors (MOGS), crucial components in monitoring air quality and detecting hazardous gases, are well known for their poisoning effects when exposed to certain gas molecules, such as hydrogen sulfide. Surprisingly, our research reveals that high-temperature H2S treatment leads to an enhancement effect rather than response decay. This study investigates the time-decaying response enhancement, being attributed to the formation of metal sulfide and metal sulfate on the metal oxide's surface, enhancing the electronic sensitization. Such an enhancement effect is demonstrated for various gases, including CO, CH3CH2OH, CH4, HCHO, and NH3. Additionally, the impacts of H2S treatment on the response and recovery time are also observed. Surface compositional analysis are conducted with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. A proposed mechanism for the enhancement effect is elaborated, highlighting the role of electronic sensitization and the sulfide-sulfate component. This research offers valuable insights into the potential applications of metal oxide sensors in sulfide-presented harsh environments in gas sensing, encouraging future exploration of optimized sensor materials, operation temperature, and the development of hydrogen sulfide poisoning-resistant and higher sensitivity MOGS.
Chemiresistive Room Temperature H2S Gas Sensor Based on MoO3 Nanobelts Decorated with MnO2 Nanoparticles

Abstract:In this work, we develop ultrafast detection and reversible H2S gas sensor at room temperature (RT, 23 degree celsius). The optimized MoO3/MnO2 (MM-10) sensor exhibits remarkable sensitivity to H2S with a response of 32.51-100 ppm H2S at RT, which is approximately 21.82 times higher than that of the MoO3 sensor. Further, the MM-10 sensor demonstrates a fast response of 5.71-1000 ppb H2S with response/recovery times of 40/42 s at RT. More surprisingly, the theoretical limit of the MM-10 sensor for detecting H2S gas is as low as 4.58 ppb at RT, which addresses the limitation of binary heterojunction-based sensors in detecting ppb-level H2S gas at RT. After 49 days, the MM-10 sensor still demonstrates reliable stability, ensuring the long-term detection to ppb-level H2S at RT in practical applications. Notably, as the relative humidity increases from 30 % to 90 %, the response only decreases by about 17 %, indicating an excellent shielding ability against water molecules. Additionally, it is found that 1 % relative humidity change has a comparable effect on MM-10 sensor as approximately 5.58 ppb H2S gas. The significant enhancement mechanism on the sensing surface in the context of H2S/MoO3/MnO2 interaction is also thoroughly discussed.
Polyaniline/CuO Nanoparticle Composites for Use in Selective H 2 S Sensors

Abstract:For ambient use, flexible hydrogen sulfide (H2S) gas sensors based on polyaniline (PANI) and copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) were investigated. PANI/CuO nanocomposites made by in situ (P-1) and bilayer (P-2) methods have shown high performances when sensing H2S of 0–25 ppm concentration in ambient conditions. The P-2 sensor maintained high sensitivity (S = 7.25) and excellent responsiveness (ΔR e = 188%). The P-1 sensor had high responses (<30 s), linearity (R 2 = 99.5%), and stability, while the CuO NP sensor was especially sensitive (S = 13.5) within 0–10 ppm of H2S concentration. In addition, the flexible/conformable composite sensors had excellent H2S selectivity and bending stability. The enhancements of the composite sensors are mainly attributed to the PANI/CuO heterojunction formation that effectively reduced the PANI band gap from 2.51 eV (PANI) to 2.48 eV (P-1) and further down to 2.43 eV (P-2) for improved conductivity and charge-transport efficiency in the semiconductor network. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses identified elements and valence band energy changes before and after H2S exposure. This study used facile methods for preparing nanocomposite-based gas sensors for the development of cost-effective, sensitive, conformable, durable, and ambient workable devices for monitoring fresh food quality in the food supply chain and environment safety for mining and petrochemical industry.

Abstract:Achieving high sensitivity in detecting trace concentrations of toxic gases, particularly under room temperature (RT) conditions, remains a significant challenge. Herein, a 0D-2D heterostructure that can detect ppb-level H 2 S at RT is proposed by self-assembling cobalt-based metal–organic framework (Co-MOF) on Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene. Co-MOFs with high specific surface areas can capture and concentrate target gas molecules, enhancing host-guest interactions and thereby boosting the selectivity and sensitivity. MXene nanosheets with high conductivity enable rapid electron transport at heterointerface, hence efficiently accelerating the reaction kinetics. Thereby, the as-prepared chemiresistive gas sensor based on Co-MOF@MXene 0D–2D heterostructure possessed excellent sensitivity against interfering gases and delivered an excellent response value of 11.1 to 400 ppb H 2 S at RT. Abstract:Conductometric detection of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) gas is highly desired in the fields of environmental protection and noninvasive human health assessment due to its unique merits of real-time monitoring, low cost, and high miniaturization. In this regard, semiconducting metal oxides, such as tin oxide (SnO2), have been extensively employed for H2S detection but suffer from constrained sensitivity, elevated operation temperature, and poor selectivity. To overcome these drawbacks, mixed-dimensional heterostructures of two-dimensional (2D) black phosphorus (BP) nanosheet-templated zero-dimensional (0D) SnO2 quantum dots (QDs) (BP/SnO2) were prepared in this work for trace H2S detection. The constituent ratio-optimized BP/SnO2 sensors showed a high response of 233.8 and swift response/recovery speeds of 16.4/9.5 s toward 5 ppm H2S and ultralow energy consumption at a relatively low operation temperature (10 mW@130 °C), rivaling or surpassing that of most of the sensors in recent academic reports and commercial products. Moreover, excellent repeatability, long-term stability, and selectivity were demonstrated. When exposed to 5 ppm H2S under 80% relative humidity, the sensor displayed a 75% response retention with respect to the dry case, revealing a favorable humidity tolerance. Furthermore, the BP/SnO2 sensors outperformed their reduced graphene oxide (rGO)- and molybdenum disulfide (MoS2)-templated counterparts in terms of response intensity and response/recovery speeds. Benefiting from the abundant p–n heterojunctions and sufficient material utility within the mixed-dimensional heterostructures, the as-prepared BP/SnO2 sensors showcased brilliant application prospects for energy-saving and portable H2S detection systems.

Cough reflex in rabbits 24-h and 48-h after sulphur dioxide breathing.

Abstract:The cough reflex elicitability (CRE), cough reflex strength (CRS) and Hering-Breuer inflation reflex (HBIR) were studied in 51 anaesthetized (Pentobarbital Spofa, 30 mg/kg, i.v.) female rabbits 24-h and 48-h after SO2 breathing. To provoke cough, the interior of the trachea and carina were stroked with a polyethylene catheter. To elicit the HBIR, the lungs were inflated to 1.0 kPa intratracheal pressure. Intrapleural and systemic blood pressures were recorded. The CRE, CRS and HBIR obtained 24-h and 48-h after SO2 breathing were compared with correspondent values of control animals. It was found, that CRE and HBIR were fully recovered 24-h after SO2 breathing, but the CRS was still decreased, however, there were no significant differences in CRE, CRS and HBIR between animals 48-h after SO2 breathing and control animals. It can be concluded, that decrease of the CRS 24-h after SO2 breathing is not due to slowly adapting stretch receptors block of airways.
