Abstract:Objective The prevalence rates of injury and bullying victimization in adolescents are continuing to rise; however, little is known about the influence of social determinants, especially for vulnerable adolescents. We aimed to estimate the prevalence of serious injury and bullying victimization in vulnerable adolescents with mental health issues or poor social support and examine the associations between social indicators and these two outcomes. Method We used the most recent datasets from the Global School-based Student Health Survey, and vulnerable adolescents aged 12–15 years from 54 countries were included. The pooled overall and regional estimates were obtained by random-effects models. Multivariable logistic regression was performed to estimate the adjusted association between five common social indicators and the two outcomes. Dose-response association was estimated by using a restricted cubic spline. Results The prevalence rates of serious injury and bullying victimization were high in vulnerable adolescents, with apparent variation between regions and countries. The pooled prevalence of serious injury ranged from 45.10 % to 50.11 %, whereas the pooled prevalence of bullying victimization ranged from 35.54 % to 45.21 %. Social indicators of national wealth, health status, income and gender inequality were significantly associated with the prevalence of serious injury and bullying victimization in vulnerable adolescents. Conclusions Serious injury and school bullying victimization are prevalent in vulnerable adolescents aged 12–15 years. Social indicators were prominent associated factors of serious injury and bullying victimization in vulnerable adolescents. The results emphasize the importance of social environment when developing intervention measures to address injury and bullying among disadvantaged teenagers.

Associations between School-Behavior-Health Difficulties and Subsequent Injuries among Younger Adolescents: A Population-based Study

Abstract:Objective: School-behavior-health difficulties (SBHDs) may alter physical/mental capabilities and consequently increase injury risk during daily activities. This study assessed the associations of potential SBHDs and their cumulative number (SBHDcn) with various injury types among younger adolescents. Methods: The study population included 1,559 middle-school adolescents in France (10-18 years, 98% under 16,778 boys and 781 girls). They completed a questionnaire at school-year end collecting socioeconomic features (nationality, family structure, parents' education/occupation/income), school/out-of-school injuries during the school-year (dependent variables), and SBHDs starting before the school-year (low academic performance, alcohol/tobacco/cannabis/other-illicit-drugs use, physical/verbal violence, sexual abuse, perpetrated violence, poor social support, poor general health status, sleep difficulty, depressive symptoms, and suicide attempt). Data were analyzed using logistic regression models and Kaplan-Meier estimates. Results: Injuries were frequent during school-physical/sports-training (10.9%), other-school-training (4.7%), school-free-time (7.4%), out-of-school-sports-activity (16.5%), and traffic (2.2%). Single injury (one injury all injury types combined) and ≥2 injury types affected 23.3 and 7.9% of subjects, respectively. The proportion of adolescents without SBHDs decreased with age more quickly among those with each injury type than among those without injury. Various SBHDs were associated with most injury types, single injury, and ≥2 injury types (sex-age-adjusted odds/relative-risk ratios reaching 11, p < .001). A dose-effect association was found between SBHDcn 1-2/3-5/≥6 and both single injury and ≥2 injury types (sex-age adjusted relative risk ratios reaching 12.66, p < .001, vs. SBHDcn = 0). Socioeconomic features had a moderate confounding role in these associations. Conclusions: SBHDs strongly predict injuries among adolescents. Our findings may inform healthcare providers about their prominent role in detecting/reducing SBHDs and injuries.
Prevalence and Behavioural Associations of Unintentional Injuries among Chinese College Students: a 50-University Population-Based Study

Abstract:Objective To assess the prevalence, demographic characteristics and behavioural correlates of unintentional injuries among Chinese college students. Methods A cross-sectional multistage survey sampling process was conducted among 11770 undergraduates from 50 universities in China. Students were asked to report different types of unintentional injuries that required medical attention from a doctor over the past year. The (2) test and multiple logistic regression analysis were used to identify factors associated with these injuries. Results The overall unintentional injury prevalence was 47.9% (95% CI 47.6% to 48.2%). Most injuries occurred at sport venues (24.0%), following by home/dormitory injuries (20.5%) and traffic injuries (13.0%). Some behavioural factors exhibiting significant associations with overall unintentional injuries were: sleeping less than 7hours (OR=1.32, 95%CI 1.27 to 1.37), smoking (OR=1.28, 95%CI 1.23 to 1.32), alcohol consumption (OR=1.74, 95%CI 1.69 to 1.78) and heavy internet use (OR=1.60, 95%CI 1.52 to 1.67). Male students were more likely to be involved in traffic and sport injuries than female students. Students majoring in non-medical fields had a higher risk of sport and home injuries than students majoring in medical fields. Those who drank alcohol, slept less than 7hours or who reported heavy internet use were more likely to experience all types of injuries than students who did not participate in these behaviours. Finally, students who smoked had a higher likelihood of traffic and sport injuries than non-smoking students. Conclusions A substantial number of college students reported injuries in the past year, and several key behavioural factors were associated with injuries. These findings could be beneficial for the design, implementation and assessment of injury intervention programme with college students. Based on these findings, policy implications for unintentional injury prevention and control were also considered.

Abstract:Objective To assess the prevalence and characteristics of unintentional injuries among 5 to 9 grades students for both urban and migrant children groups, and probe the major socio-demographic and psychosocial risk factors. Methods A cross-sectional survey was conducted from May to June in 2013 with 2266 urban and 1770 migrant children among 5 to 9 grades from 13 schools in Yinzhou, Southeast China. Unintentional injuries and psychosocial factors were measured via self-administered questionnaires. Descriptive statistics and binary logistic regression were employed in data analysis. Results The annual prevalence of unintentional injury in the past year was 38%. Compared with urban children, migrant children reported lower prevalence of sprains/fractures (15.5 vs. 18.7%), but higher in animal bites (15.7 vs. 9.6%), burns (20.7 vs. 16%), nonfatal drowning (6 vs. 2.7%), and unintentional injury (40.9 vs. 35.7%). Binary logistic regression analysis revealed that male, young age, attending migrant children school, scoring high in emotional symptoms, conduct problems or hyperactivity, with suicide ideation, and experiencing verbal maltreatment were associated with unintentional injury incidence in the past 12 months. Conclusions The annual prevalence of unintentional injury among 5 to 9 grades schoolchildren in Yinzhou was high. Child unintentional injuries were associated with multi-level psychosocial factors. Although the direct correlation between migrant status and unintentional injuries was unobserved, migration could have an indirect relationship with injury. The findings could inform some implications for prevention strategies in urban area.
Violence victimization and suicide attempts among adolescents aged 12-15 years from thirty-eight low- and middle-income countries

Abstract:Objective: The association between violence victimization and suicide attempts in a large representative sample of adolescents from low- and middle-income-countries (LMICs) of multiple continents has never been investigated. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to examine the relationship between being a victim of physical attacks (independent variable) and suicide attempts (dependent variable) in a sample of 117,472 students aged 12-15 years [mean (SD) age 13.8 (0.9) years; girls 49.4%] from thirty-eight LMICs in Africa, the Americas, and Asia. Methods: Cross-sectional data from the Global School-based Student Health Survey (GSHS) were analyzed. Self-reported data on past 12-month suicide attempts and exposure to physical attacks were collected. Logistic regression and meta-analysis were conducted. Results: The overall prevalence of suicide attempts and physical attacks were 10.1% and 39.4%, respectively. Overall, the results of the meta-analysis based on country-wise estimates adjusted for potential confounders (i.e., age, sex, food insecurity, alcohol consumption, bullying victimization, anxiety-induced sleep problems, low parental support/involvement, loneliness) showed that physical attacks were associated with a 1.71 (95%CI = 1.62-1.81) times higher odds for suicide attempt. Conclusions: In this large sample of adolescents from multiple LMICs, violence victimization was associated with significantly increased odds of suicide attempts. Future longitudinal studies are required to assess causality, and whether addressing exposure to violence can positively impact on adolescent suicide rates.
Global burden of all cause-specific injuries among children and adolescents from 1990 to 2019 : a prospective cohort study

Abstract:Background: To assess the burden and change in incidence, death, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) for all-cause-specific injuries among children and adolescents in 204 countries and territories between 1990 and 2019. Materials and Methods: Data were extracted from the Global Burden of Disease, Injury, and Risk Factor Study 2019 (GBD 2019). Global, regional, and country-level age-standardized rate (per 100,000) of incidence (ASRI), mortality (ASRM), and DALYs (ASRD) with 95% uncertainty interval (95% UI) of injuries were estimated by age, sex, socio-demographic index (SDI), and all-cause specific injuries from 1990 to 2019. Results: Overall, the ASRI, ASRM, and ASRD of injury were 9006.18 (95%UI: 7459.74 to 10918.04), 23.04 (20.00 to 26.50), and 2020.19 (1759.47 to 2318.64) among children and adolescents worldwide in 2019, respectively. All the above indicators showed a downward trend from 1990 to 2019. In level 2 cause of injury, both the global transport injury and unintentional injury declined during the study years, while self-harm and interpersonal violence-related injury showed an increasing trend. High SDI regions had higher ASRI of injuries, but low SDI regions had higher ASRM and ASRD of injuries globally in 2019. Males had a higher burden of injuries than those in females. The ASRI of injuries is higher in adolescents aged 15-19 years, whereas the mortality and DALYs rate are higher among children under 5 years old. Moreover, adolescents aged 15-19 years and individuals living in Central Asia, Middle East, and Africa had higher ASRI, ASRM, and ASRD of injuries owing to self-harm and interpersonal violence. Generally, falls and road traffic injuries are the leading cause of injury among the population aged 0-19 years worldwide, but self-harm, interpersonal violence, and conflict and terrorism are also leading types of injuries in some regions, particularly in Low- and Middle-Income Countries. Conclusions: Injury remains a major global public health problem among children and adolescents, although its burden at the worldwide level showed a decreasing trend from 1990 to 2019. Of concern, the burden of injuries caused by transport injuries, and unintentional injuries has shown a downward trend in most countries, while the burden caused by self-harm and interpersonal violence has shown an upward trend in most countries. These findings suggest that more targeted and specific strategies to prevent the burden of injuries should be reoriented, and our study provides important findings for decision-makers and healthcare providers to reduce injury burden among children and adolescents.

Abstract:In the early years following the Chinese revolution in 1949, the Chinese mounted mass campaigns against the preventable communicable diseases including the venereal diseases. These were characterized by mass education, a national health insurance system, training and dispersion of the “barefoot doctors,” elimination of prostitution, emancipation of women, and full employment. By 1996, the Chinese claimed that they had virtually eliminated venereal diseases.This was confirmed by western visitors in the 1970s. However, following the economic reforms which began in the 1980s, sexually transmitted diseases reappeared. Later, HIV infection appeared, and STDs today constitute a major public health problem in China.This resurgence parallels the privatization of the economy, the breakdown of the national health insurance system, the return of prostitution, and other factors.
Parent-adolescent relationships and their associations with adolescent suicidal behaviours: Secondary analysis of data from 52 countries using the Global School-based Health Survey

Abstract:Background: Despite the potential benefits of parents-adolescent relationships on suicidal behaviours among adolescents, research on these topics are importantly limited by lack of comprehensiveness, difficulties in cross-country comparisons, and limited generalisability, among others. We aimed to estimate the prevalence of various aspects of parents-adolescent relationships and suicidal behaviours by sex and region, and to investigate their associations. Methods: We used data from the Global School-based Health Survey (GSHS) from 52 countries in 2009-2015 for 120 858 adolescents (53.9% girls) aged 12-15 years. Using meta-analysis with random effects, we estimated the prevalence of parents-adolescent relationships (i.e. understanding problems, monitoring academic and leisure time activities, and respecting privacy) and suicidal behaviours (i.e. suicidal ideation, suicide planning, and suicide attempt). Multi-level mixed-effect logistic regressions were used to investigate their associations. Findings: Overall, boys and girls reported similar levels of parental understanding of problems (35.8% vs. 36.8%), monitoring academic activities (41.8% vs. 41.1%), and respecting privacy (69.6% vs. 69.7%), whereas girls reported higher level of parental monitoring of leisure time activities than boys (44.9% vs. 40.0%). Adolescents in the Western Pacific region reported the lowest level of parental understanding of problems and monitoring activities, while those in South-East Asia region least reported that their parents respected their privacy. The overall prevalence of any suicidal behaviour was higher in girls than boys (26.2% vs. 23.0%). Suicidal behaviour was less likely in adolescents if their parents understood their problems (odds ratio, 95% confidence intervals: 0.70, 0.68-0.73), monitored their academic (0.81, 0.78-0.84) and leisure time activities (0.73, 0.71-0.75), and respected their privacy (0.83, 0.80-0.86). There was evidence of heterogeneity in those associations by sex and regions. Interpretations: Although the prevalence of parents-adolescent relationships and adolescent suicidal behaviours varied particularly by sex and region, there were strong and independent associations among them.
Impact of an injury hospital admission on childhood academic performance: a Welsh population-based data linkage study

Abstract:Background: While injuries can impact on children's educational achievements (with threats to their development and employment prospects), these risks are poorly quantified. This population-based longitudinal study investigated the impact of an injury-related hospital admission on Welsh children's academic performance. Methods: The Secure Anonymised Information Linkage databank, 55 587 children residing in Wales from 2006 to 2016 who had an injury hospital admission (58.2% males; 16.8% born in most deprived Wales area; 80.1% one injury hospital admission) were linked to data from the Wales Electronic Cohort for Children. The primary outcome was the Core Subject Indicator reflecting educational achievement at key stages 2 (school years 3-6), 3 (school years 7-9) and 4 (school years 10-11). Covariates in models included demographic, birth, injury and school characteristics. Results: Educational achievement of children was negatively associated with: pedestrian injuries (adjusted risk ratio, (95% CIs)) (0.87, (0.83 to 0.92)), cyclist (0.96, (0.94 to 0.99)), high fall (0.96, (0.94 to 0.97)), fire/flames/smoke (0.85, (0.73 to 0.99)), cutting/piercing object (0.96, (0.93 to 0.99)), intentional self-harm (0.86, (0.82 to 0.91)), minor traumatic brain injury (0.92, (0.86 to 0.99)), contusion/open wound (0.93, (0.91 to 0.95)), fracture of vertebral column (0.78, (0.64 to 0.95)), fracture of femur (0.88, (0.84 to 0.93)), internal abdomen/pelvic haemorrhage (0.82, (0.69 to 0.97)), superficial injury (0.94, (0.92 to 0.97)), young maternal age (<18 years: 0.91, (0.88 to 0.94); 19-24 years: 0.94, (0.93 to 0.96)); area based socioeconomic status (0.98, (0.97 to 0.98)); moving to a more deprived area (0.95, (0.93 to 0.97)); requiring special educational needs (0.46, (0.44 to 0.47)). Positive associations were: being female (1.04, (1.03 to 1.06)); larger pupil school sizes and maternal age 30+ years. Conclusion: This study highlights the importance on a child's education of preventing injuries and implementing intervention programmes that support injured children. Greater attention is needed on equity-focused educational support and social policies addressing needs of children at risk of underachievement, including those from families experiencing poverty. Abstract:Objective To explore the correlation between injury and school and peer factors among adolescents,and to provide the scientific evidence for the intervention on injury prevention.Methods 4 408 students in grades 7 to 12 were selected through multi-stage stratified sampling in Beijing and Zhongshan city,Guangdong Province.A self-report anonymous questionnaire involving injury,school and peer factors were completed by students themselves.SPSS 20.0 was adopted for statistical analysis.Results 4 309 valid questionnaires were collected.The total incidence of injuries was 15.5％ while the incidence of repeated injuries was 4.3％.The incidence of boys (17.8％) was higher than that of girls (13.4％).The incidence in junior high school (17.4％) was higher than that in senior high school (13.6％).The incidence in Zhongshan city (17.9％) was higher than that in Beijing (13.0％).Peer relationship was associated with injury among adolescents.School climate,peer's attitude to risk behavior,friends' delinquent behavior were correlated with both initial injury and repeated injury.Conclusions Injury prevention should base on the characteristics of the injuries among adolescent.School should be considered as the primary place for injury prevention.A supportive environment was beneficial to injury reduction.
Self-harm among in-school and street-connected adolescents in Ghana: a cross-sectional survey in the Greater Accra region

Abstract:Objectives: To identify the prevalence, methods, associations and reported reasons for self-harm among in-school and street-connected adolescents in Ghana. Design: A cross-sectional survey. We applied multi-level regression models and model-based cluster analysis to the data. Setting: Three contexts in the Greater Accra region were used: second cycle schools, facilities of charity organisations and street census enumeration areas (sleeping places of street-connected adolescents, street corners, quiet spots of restaurants, markets, train and bus stations, and lorry and car parks). Participants: A regionally representative sample of 2107 (1723 in-school and 384 street-connected) adolescents aged 13-21 years. Outcome measures: Participants responded to a structured self-report anonymous questionnaire describing their experience of self-harm and eliciting demographic information and social and personal adversities. Results: The lifetime prevalence of self-harm was 20.2% (95% CI 19.0% to 22.0%), 12-month prevalence was 16.6% (95% CI 15.0% to 18.0%) and 1-month prevalence was 3.1% (95% CI 2.0% to 4.0%). Self-injury alone accounted for 54.5% episodes and self-poisoning alone for 16.2% episodes, with more than one method used in 26% of episodes. Self-cutting (38.7%) was the most common form of self-injury, whereas alcohol (39.2%) and medications (27.7%) were the most commonly reported means of self-poisoning. The factors associated with self-harm were interpersonal: conflict with parents (adjusted OR (aOR)=1.87, 95% CI 1.24 to 2.81), physical abuse victimisation (aOR=1.69, 95% CI 1.16 to 2.47), difficulty in making and keeping friends (aOR=1.24, 95% CI 0.85 to 1.80), sexual abuse victimisation (aOR=1.21, 95% CI 0.78 to 1.87) and conflict between parents (aOR=1.07, 95% CI 0.73 to 1.56). Conclusions: Self-harm is a significant public health problem among in-school and street-connected adolescents in the Greater Accra region of Ghana. Its origins are very largely in social and familial adversity, and therefore prevention and treatment measures need to be focused in these areas.

Abstract:The effects of 100% oxygen and 10% carbon dioxide on the choroidal circulation were studied by the radioactive krypton desaturation technique in anesthetized cats. One hundred percent oxygen caused an increase in choroidal vascular resistance (CVR) and a decrease in mean arterial pressure (MAP), both of which resulted in a slight decrease in choroidal blood flow (CBF). Ten percent carbon dioxide caused a marked decrease in CVR, a variable change in MAP, with a new increase in CBF.
Associations between excessive screen time and school and out-of-school injuries among adolescents: A population-based study

Abstract:Most adolescents spend excessive screen time (with television viewing, computer/console gaming, discussion forums/chatting online, internet surfing, doing homework, and electronic mails) which may impact the occurring of various types of school and out-of-school injuries. We assessed their associations and potential confounding factors among 1559 middle-school students from north-eastern France (mean age=13.5 ± 1.3). Participants completed a questionnaire including socioeconomic features, daily screen time for various screen-based activities (coded 1=<2, 2 = 2-4, 3=≥5 h; daily-total-screen time level (TDST) was defined as their sum, categorized into <7/7-11/≥12), various injury types during the school-year, behavior and health difficulties (BHDs; alcohol/tobacco/cannabis/other illicit drugs use, suffered physical/verbal violence, sexual abuse, poor family-peer support, sleep difficulty, depressive symptoms, suicide attempt, and time at onset). Most subjects had TDST≥7 (82.3 %). There were dose-effect associations of TDST with school-physical/sports training, school-free-time, out-of-school-sports, and single/repeated injuries (sex-age-adjusted odds ratio reaching 4.45). BHDs explained up to 39 % of these associations. The frequency of subjects without various BHDs decreased with age since age 10 more quickly among the participants with both TDST≥7 and injury than among the others. Our findings may inform health care providers, parents, schools, and public policy that reducing elevated screen time is efficient to prevent injuries and BHDs among adolescents.

Abstract:(N-1)-security is a decisive impact factor on both transmission system operation and network planning as it constrains the permissible states of the grid. Ensuring an (N-1)-secure operation and planning is a particular challenge in the presence of uncertainties. The inefficiency due to constrained network operation can be alleviated by fast corrective actions, e.g. by FACTS devices, HVDC or phase shifting transformers: a corrective (N-1)-security analysis accounts for fast reactions to post-contingency situations. In this paper, first an approach for a techno-economic analysis will be presented that allows for the evaluation of corrective controls in system operation. Second, a real options analysis is proposed to determine the value of the flexibility gained by corrective controls in the course of transmission system planning under uncertainties. Finally, the two methods will be applied in a case study for corrective power flow control by phase shifting transformers in the European transmission system.
Parental role and peer support in adolescent suicidal behavior in eight South-East Asian countries

Abstract:Background: This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of suicidal behaviors, i.e. suicidal ideation (SI), suicidal plan (SP), and suicidal attempt (SA) among adolescents with a focus on parental and peer support in eight South-East Asian countries including Bangladesh, Bhutan, Indonesia, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand. Method: Data were drawn from Global School-based Student Health Survey (GSHS) covering 42,888 adolescents aged 11-17 years. Weighted prevalence of SI, SP, and SA along with country specific prevalence was computed and binary logistic regression was used to identify associated risk factors. Results: Among 42,888 adolescents 19,113 (44.9%) were males and 23,441 (55.1%) females. Overall prevalence of SI, SP and SA is 9.10%, 10.42% and 8.54%, respectively. Myanmar demonstrated the lowest SI (1.07%) and SP (0.18%) whereas lowest SA was found in Indonesia (3.79%). Maldives had the highest prevalence of SI, SP and SA which were 14.13%, 19.02% and 13.38% respectively. Overall suicidal behaviors were associated with being female [AOR: SI-1.26 (1.06,1.50), SP-1.34 (1.14,1.57)], high levels of sedentary behavior [AOR: SI-2.08 (1.62,2.66), SP-1.86 (1.49,2.32), SA-1.96 (1.45,2.64)], involvement in physical fighting [AOR: SI-1.30 (1.07,1.58), SP-1.37 (1.14,1.65), SA-1.50 (1.17,1.90)], being seriously injured [AOR: SI-1.40 (1.17,1.67), SP-1.44 (1.22,1.69), SA-1.74 (1.39,2.17)], being bullied [AOR: SI- 1.68 (1.39,2.02), SP-1.34 (1.12,1.60), SA-1.88 (1.50,2.36)], feeling lonely (most of time or always) [AOR: SI-3.41(2.60,4.46), SP-1.92 (1.48,2.47), SA-2.25 (1.62,3.13)], lack of parental support (never checking homework) [AOR: SI-1.59 (1.25,2.02), SP-1.52 (1.22,1.90)] and not having close friends [AOR: SI-2.19 (1.66,2.89), SP-2.26 (1.74,2.94), SA-4.23 (3.10,5.78)]. Conclusion: Though prevalence of suicidal behaviors varies, a range of cross-cutting risk factors exists that warrant further examination. We recommend focusing on strengthening parental and peer support, targeted programs addressing physical activity, bullying, loneliness and mental-health of adolescents.
Risk factors for non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) in adolescents: A meta-analysis

Abstract:Background: Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) in adolescents is a significant mental health problem around the world. Here, we performed a meta-analysis to systematically delineate the risk factors for NSSI.Method: We searched Medline, Embase, Web of Science and Cochrane for relevant articles and abstracts published prior to 12 November 2021. Pooled odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confident intervals (CIs) were used to assess various risk factors, and publication bias was assessed by Egger's test, the trim and fill method and meta-regression. This study is registered with PROSPERO, CRD42021265885.Results: A total of 25 articles were eventually included in the analysis. Eighty risk factors were identified and classified into 7 categories: mental disorders (ORs, 1·89; 95% CI, 1·60-2·24), bullying (ORs, 1·98; 95% CI, 1·32-2·95), low health literacy (ORs, 2·20; 95% CI, 1·63-2·96), problem behaviours (ORs, 2·36; 95% CI, 2·00-2·77), adverse childhood experiences (ORs, 2·49; 95% CI, 1·85-3.34), physical symptoms (ORs, 2·85; 95% CI, 1·36-5·97) and the female gender (ORs, 2·89; 95% CI, 2·43-3·43). The range of heterogeneity (I<sup>2</sup>) was from 20·3% to 99·2%.Conclusion: This meta-analysis found that mental disorders, low health literacy, adverse childhood experiences, bullying, problem behaviours, the female gender and physical symptoms appear to be risk factors for NSSI.

Abstract:Background: Adolescents with immature mind and unstable emotional control are high-risk groups of non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) behavior. We meta-analyzed the global prevalence of NSSI and prevalence of NSSI characteristics in a non-clinical sample of adolescents between 2010 and 2021. Methods: A systematic search for relevant articles published from January 1, 2010 to June 30, 2021 was performed within the scholarly database search engines of CBM, CNKI, VIP, Wanfang, PubMed, Web of Science, PsycINFO, and Embase. Eligibility criteria were as follows: provided cross-sectional data on the prevalence of NSSI; the subjects were non-clinical sample adolescents; and a clear definition of NSSI was reported. We used the following definiton of NSSI as our standard: the deliberate, self-inflicted destruction of body tissue, such as cutting, burning, and biting, without attempted suicide. The quality evaluation tool for cross-sectional studies recommended by the JBI was used. The global prevalence of NSSI was calculated based on the random-effects model by Comprehensive Meta-analysis version 3.0. Subgroup analyses were performed to compare the prevalence according to sex, living place, smoking or drinking history, and family structure. Results: Sixty-two studies involving 264,638 adolescents were included. The aggregate prevalence of NSSI among a non-clinical sample of adolescents was similar between over a lifetime (22.0%, 95% CI 17.9–26.6) and during a 12-month period (23.2%, 95% CI 20.2–26.5). Repetitive NSSI was more common than episodic NSSI (20.3% vs. 8.3%) but the frequency of mild injury (12.6%) was similar to that of moderate injury (11.6%). Multiple-method NSSI occurred slightly more often compared than one-method NSSI (16.0% vs. 11.1%). The top three types of NSSI in adolescents were banging/hitting (12.0%, 95% CI 8.9–15.9), pinching (10.0%, 95% CI 6.7–14.8), and pulling hair (9.8%, 95% CI 8.3–11.5), and the least common type was swallowing drugs/toxic substances/chemicals (1.0%, 95% CI 0.5–2.2). Subgroup analyses showed that being female, smoking, drinking, having siblings, and belonging to a single-parent family may be linked to higher prevalence of NSSI. Conclusion: This meta-analysis found a high prevalence of NSSI in non-clinical sample of adolescents, but there are some changes in severity, methods, and reasons. Based on the current evidence, adolescents in modern society are more inclined to implement NSSI behavior by a variety of ways, which usually are repetitive, and moderate and severe injuries are gradually increasing. It is also worth noting that adolescents with siblings or in single-parent families are relatively more likely to implement NSSI behavior due to maladjustment to the new family model. Future research needs to continue to elucidate the features and risk factors of NSSI so as to intervene in a targeted way. Limitation: The limitation of this study is that the heterogeneity among the included studies is not low, and it is mainly related to Chinese and English studies. Abstract:Objective To identify the effect of health risk behaviors on accidental injury of adoles-cents.Then analyze the strength and approach of the health risk behaviors. Methods Cluster sampling on various stages and strata methods was adopted. The adolescents from grade one to three in junior school students and grade one to three in senior high school students completed the questionaire. A total of 4408 students were surveyed and 4309 samples were valid. Path analysis was used to understand how factors could influence injury incidence. Results The incidence of adolescent injury was 15.53%. Statistical differences were found between genders (male 17.77%,female 13.36%,χ2=15.91, P<0.01),education levels (junior high school 17.36%,senior high school 13.99%,χ2=11.45, P<0.01) and cities ( Beijing 12.97%,Zhongs-han 17.95%,χ2=20.33, P<0.01) . Those who got injured were found with more health risk behaviors. Health risk behavior was the direct influencing factor to injury,as well as a possible risk factor to multiple injuries. Conclusion Health risk behaviors can strongly affect adolescent injury,and can be an indicator. Reducing health risk behaviors is important in adolescent injury prevention.

Abstract:Background Injury is one of the leading causes for deaths of adolescent at present, and injury in adolescent has become a major concern for international researchers. China Health Statistical Yearbook 2011 reported that injury has become the most prevalence cause of death for both urban and rural adolescents. In order to have a thorough understanding of current situation of adolescent injury, and to give scientific evidence in the future, this article tries to systematically estimate the incidence and to examine factors that contribute to the variations in incidence of adolescent injury among studies. Methods The term "adolescent" in this study is strict to population aged between 10 and 19 years old. Wanfang, CNKI, EBSCO and PubMed Databases were searched for adolescent injury data, based on quantitative studies between 2005 and 2015. Meta-analysis was used to calculate the pooled size of effect and to identify the sources of variation using STATA Version 12.0. Results A total of 71 articles using data from regional surveys were identified in the review. Results showed that the estimated injury number of people and person- time were 26.4% (95% CI: 21.8%–31.1%) and 24.0% (95% CI: 22.4 % −25.7%), respectively. Differences by gender and grade could be found. When summarising data of the past decade, it is found that the incidence of adolescent injury fluctuated, while recent years have witnessed a significant increase. The type occurred in adolescents with the highest frequency is falling. Conclusions Male and middle school students are more vulnerable to get injured, which indicates close attention should be paid to those groups. Moreover, due to increasing incidence of injury during the past years, efficient monitoring and intervention should be taken into consideration for administrators and policy-makers.
