Abstract:MeV ultrafast electron diffraction (UED) is a widely used technology for ultrafast structural dynamic studies of matters in numerous areas. The development of laser wakefield accelerator (LWFA) envisions great potential of advanced all-optical electron source based on LWFA in UED applications. We experimentally demonstrated that an LWFA-based device with a miniaturized permanent magnet beamline can generate and manipulate electron beams suitable for UED. In the beam transmission, the LWFA electron beams with intrinsic short duration stretch due to energy spread and then are compressed by a following double bend achromat. The optimized double bend achromat can make the beamline isochronous such that the arrival time jitter induced by the shot-to-shot energy fluctuation can be eliminated, and allow the advantage of the natural laser-beam synchronization for LWFAs to emerge. With the energy filtering, the beam energy spread can be reduced to 3% (FWHM) while a sufficient amount of charge (11.9 fC) per bunch for diffraction is retained. Start-to-end simulations showed that the bunch length reaches ~30 fs (rms) with the same experimental configuration. Clear single-shot and multi-shot diffraction patterns of single-crystalline gold samples are obtained and the derived lattice constant agrees excellently with the real value. Our proof-of-principle experiments open the door to the detection of ultrafast structural dynamics using MeV LWFA beams, and pave the way for the UED applications with sub-10-fs temporal resolution.

Experimental Demonstration of High Quality MeV Ultrafast Electron Diffraction

Abstract:The simulation optimization and an experimental demonstration of improved performances of mega-electron-volt ultrafast electron diffraction (MeV UED) are reported in this paper. Using ultrashort high quality electron pulses from an S-band photocathode rf gun and a polycrystalline aluminum foil as the sample, we experimentally demonstrated an improved spatial resolution of MeV UED, in which the Debye-Scherrer rings of the (111) and (200) planes were clearly resolved. This result showed that MeV UED is capable to achieve an atomic level spatial resolution and a approximately 100 fs temporal resolution simultaneously, and will be a unique tool for ultrafast structural dynamics studies.

Abstract:The ability to resolve the dynamics of matter on its native temporal and spatial scales constitutes a key challenge and convergent theme across chemistry, biology, and materials science. The last couple of decades have witnessed ultrafast electron diffraction (UED) emerge as one of the forefront techniques with the sensitivity to resolve atomic motions. Increasingly sophisticated UED instruments are being developed that are aimed at increasing the beam brightness in order to observe structural signatures, but so far they have been limited to low average current beams. Here we present the technical design and capabilities of the HiRES (High Repetition Rate Electron Scattering) instrument, which blends relativistic electrons and high repetition rates to achieve orders of magnitude improvement in average beam current compared to the existing state-of-the-art UED instruments. The setup utilizes a novel electron source to deliver femtosecond duration electron pulses at up to MHz repetition rates for UED experiments. We provide example cases of diffraction measurements on solid-state and gas-phase samples, including both micro- and nanodiffraction modes, which showcase the potential of the instrument for novel UED experiments.

Metabolomics: Unraveling the chemical individuality of common human diseases

Abstract:Sir Archibald Garrod is often referred to in recent perspectives on metabolomics because he was the first to recognize ‘inborn errors of metabolism’. For decades, the determination of metabolites was the domain of those involved in the diagnosis of this class of inherited disorders. With the development of metabolomics, these methods to determine and analyze metabolites have been taken an exciting step forward and are now used to understand common human disease. This concept of looking at metabolites to solve the pathogenesis of human disease touches upon another concept developed by Garrod, known as ‘chemical individuality’. Garrod proposed that each person is biochemically unique due to inherited differences in enzymes, which is reflected in disease predisposition. In a more contemporary perspective, this concept may be extended to chemical individuality of a human disease. This is the domain of metabolomics, which aims to determine as many metabolites as possible in samples from a cohort of individuals. Analysis of the results will identify changes in metabolites that correlate with the presence of certain afflictions. The next challenging step is then to determine whether these metabolites are only biomarkers for the presence of a disease or new leads to an unknown etiology.
High repetition rate ultrafast electron diffraction with direct electron detection

Abstract:Ultrafast electron diffraction (UED) instruments typically operate at kHz or lower repetition rates and rely on indirect detection of electrons. However, these experiments encounter limitations because they are required to use electron beams containing a relatively large number of electrons (>>100 electrons/pulse), leading to severe space-charge effects. Consequently, electron pulses with long durations and large transverse diameters are used to interrogate the sample. Here, we introduce a novel UED instrument operating at a high repetition rate and employing direct electron detection. We operate significantly below the severe space-charge regime by using electron beams containing 1 to 140 electrons per pulse at 30-kHz. We demonstrate the ability to detect time-resolved signals from thin film solid samples with a difference contrast signal, ${\Delta}I/I_0$, and an instrument response function as low as $10^{-5}$ and 184-fs (FWHM), respectively, without temporal compression. Overall, our findings underscore the importance of increasing the repetition rate of UED experiments and adopting a direct electron detection scheme, which will be particularly impactful for gas-phase UED. Our newly developed scheme enables more efficient and sensitive investigations of ultrafast dynamics in photoexcited samples using ultrashort electron beams.

Abstract:Instruments to visualize transient structural changes of inhomogeneous materials on the nanometer scale with atomic spatial and temporal resolution are demanded to advance materials science, bioscience, and fusion sciences. One such technique is femtosecond electron microdiffraction, in which a short pulse of electrons with femtosecond-scale duration is focused into a micron-scale spot and used to obtain diffraction images to resolve ultrafast structural dynamics over localized crystalline domain. In this letter, we report the experimental demonstration of time-resolved mega-electron-volt electron microdiffraction which achieves a 5 {\mu}m root-mean-square (rms) beam size on the sample and a 100 fs rms temporal resolution. Using pulses of 10k electrons at 4.2 MeV energy with a normalized emittance 3 nm-rad, we obtained high quality diffraction from a single 10 {\mu}m paraffin (C_44 H_90) crystal. The phonon softening mode in optical-pumped polycrystalline Bi was also time-resolved, demonstrating the temporal resolution limits of our instrument design. This new characterization capability will open many research opportunities in material and biological sciences.

Abstract:We report the design and performance of a time-resolved electron diffraction apparatus capable of producing intense bunches with simultaneously single digit micron probe size, long coherence length, and $200$ fs rms time resolution. We measure the 5d (peak) beam brightness at the sample location in micro-diffraction mode to be $7 \times 10^{13} \ \mathrm{A}/\text{m}^2\text{-rad}^2$. To generate high brightness electron bunches, the system employs high efficiency, low emittance semiconductor photocathodes driven with a wavelength near the photoemission threshold at a repetition rate up to 250 kHz. We characterize spatial, temporal, and reciprocal space resolution of the apparatus. We perform proof-of-principle measurements of ultrafast heating in single crystal Au samples and compare experimental results with simulations that account for the effects of multiple-scattering.

Ultrafast Electron Diffraction at Surfaces:From Nanoscale Heat Transport to Driven Phase Transitions

Abstract:Many fundamental processes of structural changes at surfaces occur on a pico- or femtosecond time scale. In order to study such ultra-fast processes, we have combined modern surface science techniques with fs-laser pulses in a pump-probe scheme. Reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED) with grazing incident electrons ensures surface sensitivity for the probing electron pulses. Utilizing the Debye-Waller effect, we studied the nanoscale heat transport from an ultrathin film through a hetero-interface or the damping of vibrational excitations in monolayer adsorbate systems on the lower ps-time scale. By means of spot profile analysis the different cooling rates of epitaxial Ge nanostructures of different size and strain state were determined. The excitation and relaxation dynamics of a driven phase transition far away from thermal equilibrium is demonstrated using the In-induced (8x2) reconstruction on Si(111). This Peierls-distorted surface charge density wave system exhibits a discontinuous phase transition at 130 K from a (8x2) insulating ground state to (4x1) metallic excited state. Upon excitation by a fs-laser pulse, this structural phase transition is non-thermally driven in only 700 fs into the excited state. A small barrier of 40 meV hinders the immediate recovery of the groundstate and the system is found in a metastable supercooled state for up to few nanoseconds.

Abstract:We have demonstrated single-shot continuously time-resolved MeV ultrafast electron diffraction using a static single crystal gold sample. An MeV high density electron pulse was used to probe the sample and then streaked by an rf deflecting cavity. The single-shot, high quality, streaked diffraction pattern allowed structural information within several picoseconds to be continuously temporally resolved with an approximately 200 fs resolution. The temporal resolution can be straightforwardly improved to 100 fs by increasing the streaking strength. We foresee that this system would become a powerful tool for ultrafast structural dynamics studies.

Abstract:Herein, we propose a technique for megaelectronvolt ultrafast electron diffraction that can achieve a few-femtosecond time resolution. The technique modulates a relativistic electron beam using two radially polarized laser pulses of varying frequencies, which enable the condensation of the electrons into an ultrashort pulse. Moreover, our study shows that this technique can suppress the arrival-time jitter of the electron beam at the sample location. Numerical simulations show that using realistic laser parameters corresponding to the current gigawatt-power-level laser systems, a 3.3-fs (rms over 45% charge) electron beam can be obtained and the arrival-time jitter can be 1.35 fs (rms). This technique may have a considerable impact on ultrafast electron diffraction, microscopy, and other ultrafast research facilities that require few-femtosecond electron beams with a small time jitter.

Abstract:One of the frontiers in electron scattering is to couple ultrafast temporal resolution with highly localized probes to investigate the role of microstructure on material properties. Here, taking advantage of the high average brightness of our electron source, we demonstrate the generation of ultrafast relativistic electron beams with picometer-scale emittance and their ability to probe nanoscale features on materials with complex microstructures. The electron beam is tightly focused at the sample plane by a custom in-vacuum lens system, and its evolution around the waist is accurately reconstructed. We then use the focused beam to characterize a Ti-6 wt% Al polycrystalline sample by correlating the diffraction and imaging modality, showcasing the capability to locate grain boundaries and map adjacent crystallographic domains with sub-micron precision. This work provides a paradigm for ultrafast electron instrumentation, enabling characterization techniques such as relativistic ultrafast electron nano-diffraction and ultrafast scanning transmission electron microscopy.

Abstract:The conversion of light into chemical and mechanical energy mediates many important processes in nature, e.g. vision, photosynthesis and DNA photodamage. To understand the structure-function relationships regulating such processes one must strive to study them in their natural environment, i.e. in the liquid-phase. This presentation reports on the design of a novel Ultrafast Electron Diffraction instrument capable of resolving structural dynamics in liquid samples. The capabilities of this instrument are showcased in the study of water, where its structure was resolved up to the 3rd hydration shell with 0.6 A spatial resolution, and dynamics were resolved with 200 fs resolution.

Abstract:We present an experimental demonstration of ultrafast electron diffraction (UED) with THz-driven electron bunch compression and time-stamping that enables UED probes with improved temporal resolution. Through THz-driven longitudinal bunch compression, a compression factor of approximately four is achieved. Moreover, the time-of-arrival jitter between the compressed electron bunch and a pump laser pulse is suppressed by a factor of three. Simultaneously, the THz interaction imparts a transverse spatiotemporal correlation on the electron distribution, which we utilize to further enhance the precision of time-resolved UED measurements. We use this technique to probe single-crystal gold nanofilms and reveal transient oscillations in the THz near fields with a temporal resolution down to 50 fs. These oscillations were previously beyond reach in the absence of THz compression and time-stamping.

Abstract:Electron diffraction through a thin patterned silicon membrane can be used to create complex spatial modulations in electron distributions by varying the intensity of different reflections using parameters such as crystallographic orientation and wafer thickness, then selecting specific spots in the diffraction plane using apertures. The patterned electron beams can be used to control phase and amplitude of subsequent x-ray emission, enabling novel coherent x-ray methods. The electrons themselves can also be used for femtosecond time resolved diffraction and microscopy. As a first step toward patterned beams, we demonstrate experimentally and through simulation the ability to accurately predict and control diffraction spot intensities. We simulate MeV transmission electron diffraction patterns using the multislice method for various crystallographic orientations of a single crystal Si(100) membrane near beam normal. The resulting intensity maps of the Bragg reflections are compared to experimental results obtained at the Accelerator Structure Test Area Ultrafast Electron Diffraction (ASTA UED) facility at SLAC. Furthermore, the fraction of inelastic and elastic scattering of the initial charge is estimated along with the absorption of the membrane to determine the contrast that would be seen in a patterned version of the Si(100) membrane.
Imaging Single Electrons to Enable the Generation of Ultrashort Beams for Single-Shot Femtosecond Relativistic Electron Diffraction

Abstract:The generation and control of relativistic electron beams well suited for ultrafast electron diffraction application has rapidly advanced, greatly benefiting from the overlap in techniques and expertise with the accelerator community. However, imaging the diffracted MeV electrons with high detection efficiency has remained an under-explored area. In this paper, we report on a quantitative study of the imaging of MeV electrons using a detection system consisting of a phosphor screen, a lens-coupling optics, and a charge-coupled device camera. It is shown that every MeV electron in the beam yields a signal well above the camera noise. With this detection efficiency, only ∼105 electrons per pulse are needed to obtain a high quality single-shot diffraction pattern from a crystalline sample. We measured that such a low charge beam can be as short as 30 fs rms. Further, we discuss the possibility of compressing these electron beams to sub-5 fs rms bunch length by velocity bunching using a short high gradient rf accelerating structure scheduled to be installed next year at the UCLA Pegasus Laboratory. This opens the possibility of single-shot determinations of structural changes in many ultrafast physical processes like nonequilibrium phonon dynamics or relaxation pathways in systems with strong electron-phonon coupling.

Abstract:Since the discovery of electron-wave duality, electron scattering instrumentation has developed into a powerful array of techniques for revealing the atomic structure of matter. Beyond detecting local lattice variations in equilibrium structures with the highest possible spatial resolution, recent research efforts have been directed toward the long-sought-after dream of visualizing the dynamic evolution of matter in real time. The atomic behavior at ultrafast timescales carries critical information on phase transition and chemical reaction dynamics, the coupling of electronic and nuclear degrees of freedom in materials and molecules, and the correlation among structure, function, and previously hidden metastable or nonequilibrium states of matter. Ultrafast electron pulses play an essential role in this scientific endeavor, and their generation has been facilitated by rapid technical advances in both ultrafast laser and particle accelerator technologies. This review presents a summary of the noteworthy developments in this field in the last few decades. The physics and technology of ultrafast electron beams is presented with an emphasis on the figures of merit most relevant for ultrafast electron diffraction experiments. Recent developments in the generation, manipulation, and characterization of ultrashort electron beams aimed at improving the combined spatiotemporal resolution of these measurements are discussed. The fundamentals of electron scattering from atomic matter and the theoretical frameworks for retrieving dynamic structural information from solid-state and gas-phase samples is described. Essential experimental techniques and several landmark works that have applied these approaches are also highlighted to demonstrate the widening applicability of these methods. Ultrafast energy-dispersive soft-x-ray diffraction in the water window with a laser-driven source

Abstract:Time-resolved soft-x-ray-diffraction experiments give access to microscopic processes in a broad range of solid-state materials by probing ultrafast dynamics of ordering phenomena. While laboratory-based high-harmonic generation (HHG) light sources provide the required photon energies, their limited photon flux is distributed over a wide spectral range, rendering typical monochromatic diffraction schemes challenging. Here, we present a scheme for energy-dispersive soft-x-ray diffraction with femtosecond temporal resolution and photon energies across the water window from 200 to 600 eV. The experiment utilizes the broadband nature of the HHG emission to efficiently probe large slices in reciprocal space. As a proof-of-concept, we study the laser-induced structural dynamics of a Mo/Si superlattice in an ultrafast, non-resonant soft-x-ray diffraction experiment. We extract the underlying strain dynamics from the measured shift of its first order superlattice Bragg peak in reciprocal space at photon energies around 500 eV via soft-x-ray scattering simulations.

Abstract:Ultrafast lattice deformation of tens to hundreds of nanometer thick metallic crystals, after femtosecond laser excitation, was measured directly using 8.04 keV subpicosecond x-ray and 59 keV femtosecond electron pulses. Coherent phonons were generated in both single crystal and polycrystalline films. Lattice compression was observed within the first few picoseconds after laser irradiation in single crystal aluminum, which was attributed to the generation of a blast force and the propagation of elastic waves. The different time scale of lattice heating for tens and hundreds nanometer thick films are clearly distinguished by electron and x-ray pulse diffraction. The electron and lattice heating due to ultrafast deposition of photon energy was numerically simulated using the two-temperature model (TTM) and the results agreed with experimental observations. The ultrafast heating described by TTM was also discussed from an electrical circuit perspective, which may provide new insights on the possible connection between thermal and electrical processes. This study demonstrates that the combination of two complimentary ultrafast time-resolved methods, ultrafast x-ray and electron diffraction will provide a panoramic picture of the transient atomic motions and structure in crystals.
Generation of sub-100 fs electron pulses for time-resolved electron diffraction using a direct synchronization method

Abstract:To investigate photoinduced phenomena in various materials and molecules, ultrashort pulsed x-ray and electron sources with high brightness and high repetition rates are required. The x-ray and electron's typical and de Broglie wavelengths are shorter than lattice constants of materials and molecules. Therefore, photoinduced structural dynamics on the femtosecond to picosecond timescales can be directly observed in a diffraction manner by using these pulses. This research created a tabletop ultrashort pulsed electron diffraction setup that used a femtosecond laser and electron pulse compression cavity that was directly synchronized to the microwave master oscillator (∼3 GHz). A compressed electron pulse with a 1 kHz repetition rate contained 228 000 electrons. The electron pulse duration was estimated to be less than 100 fs at the sample position by using photoinduced immediate lattice changes in an ultrathin silicon film (50 nm). The newly developed time-resolved electron diffraction setup has a pulse duration that is comparable to femtosecond laser pulse widths (35-100 fs). The pulse duration, in particular, fits within the timescale of photoinduced phenomena in quantum materials. Our developed ultrafast time-resolved electron diffraction setup with a sub-100 fs temporal resolution would be a powerful tool in material science with a combination of optical pump-probe, time-resolved photoemission spectroscopic, and pulsed x-ray measurements.
