Abstract:Antibiotics in soil environments are a growing concern. Identifying transformation products is key to elucidating degradation pathways and mechanisms of antibiotics and other organic micropollutants. The primary challenge of transformation product identification is the interference of matrices. In this study, stable-isotope assisted nontarget screening was used to identify biodegradation products of florfenicol in soil. A total of 74 candidates were prioritized from thousands of mass features observed by a tiered peak filtering approach. Moreover, with the support of in silico prediction tools, the structures of 12 transformation products were elucidated, and 9 of them were reported for the first time. A biodegradation map of florfenicol consisting of amide hydrolysis, dechlorination, dehydration, defluorination, and sulfone reduction was established based on these identified products. A total of 8 products were also found in 6 field soil samples with manure application. Because of the structural similarity to florfenicol, some transformation products might still keep antimicrobial activity toward a variety of bacterial species. The strategies demonstrated in this study provide a basis for efficient identification of transformation products of other organic micropollutants in a variety of environmental matrices. The results also shed light on the degradation mechanisms, risk assessments, and regulations of these compounds.

Abstract:Azole antifungal molecules are broadly used as active ingredients in various products, such as pharmaceuticals and pesticides. This promotes their release into the natural environment. The detailed mechanism of their influence on the biotic components of natural ecosystems remains unexplored. Our research aimed to examine the response of Ochrobactrum anthropi AspCl2.2 to the presence of four azole antifungal agents (clotrimazole, fluconazole, climbazole, epoxiconazole). The experiments performed include analysis of the cell metabolic activity, cell membrane permeability, total glutathione level and activity of glutathione S-transferases. These studies allowed for the evaluation of the cells’ oxidative stress response to the presence of azole antifungals. Moreover, changes in the nanomechanical surface properties, including adhesive and elastic features of the cells, were investigated using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and spectrophotometric methods. The results indicate that the azoles promote bacterial oxidative stress. The strongest differences were noted for the cells cultivated with fluconazole. The least toxic effect has been attributed to climbazole. AFM observations unraveled molecular details of bacterial cell texture, structure and surface nanomechanical properties. Antifungals promote the nanoscale modification of the bacterial cell wall. The results presented provided a significant insight into the strategies used by environmental bacterial cells to survive exposures to toxic azole antifungal agents.

Mycoremediation of azole antifungal agents using in vitro cultures of Lentinula edodes

Abstract:Azole antifungal agents are widely used as active ingredients in antifungal pharmaceuticals and agricultural fungicides. An increase in the use of azole antifungals has resulted in an increase in the concentration of these compounds in wastewater and surface water, with potential implications for agriculture. In the present study, bifonazole (BIF) and clotrimazole (CTZ) were selected for investigation because of their widespread use in topical formulations and persistence in the environment. The mycoremediation capacity of BIF and CTZ by mycelia of Lentinula edodes in in vitro culture was evaluated. The main aim of this study was to identify the presumable biodegradation products of the investigated active pharmaceutical substances using the LC/MS/MS method. For this purpose, the media were enriched with the following active pharmaceutical ingredients selected for this study: BIF powder, CTZ powder, and BIF cream, each of them at the same concentration of 0.1 mg/mL. Subsequently, thin-layer chromatography coupled with densitometry was used to evaluate the content of BIF and CTZ in mycelium from in vitro cultures of L. edodes. The degradation process was found to affect primarily the imidazole moiety of both investigated compounds. In addition, the amounts of undegraded investigated compounds were found to be 4.98, 9.26, and 4.56 mg/g dry weight for BIF powder, CTZ powder, and BIF cream, respectively. Therefore, the findings of this study revealed that L. edodes could be considered for remediation of pollution caused by azole antifungal agents.

Abstract:The presence of pharmaceuticals (PhACs) in the aquatic environment is an emerging problem worldwide. PhACs reach surface water via the effluents of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). WWTPs, although able to remove organic pollutants, do not always remove PhACs. Currently, in the treatment of sewage with the activated sludge method, numerous microorganisms are used, mostly bacteria. Nevertheless, these microorganisms are not resistant to many drug contaminants, and some may also pose a risk to human health. White-rot fungi (WRF), which degrade a wide spectrum of environmental pollutants, may be used as an alternative to microorganisms. However, little data exists comparing the removal of various PhACs by different WRF. In this study, we aimed to determine the ability of three WRF Basidiomycota species, Armillaria mellea, Phanerochaete chrysosporium, and Pleurotus ostreatus, to remove PhACs from various therapeutic groups over the course of 1 h-4 days. Additionally, we identified the fungal metabolites of PhACs, proposed the degradation pathways, and assessed the toxicity of the post-culture media. All selected WRF removed PhACs, but the degree of removal depended on WRF species and PhACs type. Antidepressants and immunosuppressants were removed most efficiently by P. ostreatus, cardiovascular drugs and sulfamethoxazole by A. mellea, and erythromycin by P. chrysosporium. The vast differences observed highlight the need for more intensive testing of different WRF species to select the best species for removing pharmaceuticals of interest. The structure of metabolites generated during degradation strongly depended on WRF species, but the most frequent xenobiotic transformations were oxidation and dealkylation. The obtained results gave insight into the substrate specificity of selected WRF while also providing a broad extension of the knowledge of pharmaceutical degradation by A. mellea.
Removal of chloramphenicol antibiotics in natural and engineered water systems: Review of reaction mechanisms and product toxicity

Abstract:Chloramphenicol antibiotics are widely applied in human and veterinary medicine. They experience natural attenuation and/or chemical degradation during oxidative water treatment. However, the environmental risks posed by the transformation products of such organic contaminants remain largely unknown from the literature. As such, this review aims to summarize and analyze the elimination efficiency, reaction mechanisms, and resulting product risks of three typical chloramphenicol antibiotics (chloramphenicol, thiamphenicol, and florfenicol) from these transformation processes. The obtained results suggest that limited attenuation of these micropollutants is observed during hydrolysis, biodegradation, and photolysis. Comparatively, prominent abatement of these compounds is accomplished using advanced oxidation processes; however, efficient mineralization is still difficult given the formation of recalcitrant products. The in silico prediction on the multi-endpoint toxicity and biodegradability of different products is systematically performed. Most of the transformation products are estimated with acute and chronic aquatic toxicity, genotoxicity, and developmental toxicity. Furthermore, the overall reaction mechanisms of these contaminants induced by multiple oxidizing species are revealed. Overall, this review unveils the non-overlooked and serious secondary risks and biodegradability recalcitrance of the degradation products of chloramphenicol antibiotics using a combined experimental and theoretical method. Strategic improvements of current treatment technologies are strongly recommended for complete water decontamination.

Abstract:BACKGROUNDAzoles are an important class of compounds that are widely used as corrosion inhibitors in aircraft de‐icing agents, cooling towers, semiconductor manufacturing, and household dishwashing detergents. They are also important moieties in pharmaceutical drugs and fungicides. Azoles are widespread emerging contaminants occurring frequently in water bodies. Azole compounds can potentially cause inhibition towards key biological processes in natural ecosystems and wastewater treatment processes. Of particular concern is the inhibition of azoles to the nitrification process (aerobic oxidation of ammonium). This study investigated the acute toxicity of azole compounds towards the anaerobic ammonia oxidation (anammox) process, which is an important environmental biotechnology gaining traction for nutrient‐nitrogen removal during wastewater treatment. In this study, using batch bioassay techniques, the anammox toxicity of eight commonly occurring azole compounds was evaluated. RESULTSThe results show that 1H‐benzotriazole and 5‐methyl‐1H‐benzotriazole had the highest inhibitory effect on the anammox process, causing 50% decrease in anammox activity (IC50) at concentrations of 19.6 and 17.8 mg L‐1 respectively. 1H‐imidazole caused less severe toxicity with an IC50 of 79.4 mg L‐1. The other azole compounds were either non‐toxic (1H‐pyrazole, 1H‐1,2,4‐triazole and 1‐methyl‐pyrazole) or at best mildly toxic (1H‐benzotriazole‐5‐carboxylic acid and 3,5‐dimethyl‐1H‐pyrazole) towards the anammox bacteria at the concentrations tested. CONCLUSIONSThis study showed that most azole compounds tested displayed mild to low or no toxicity towards the anammox bacteria. Abstract:Although internationally recognized as the “highest priority critically important antimicrobials,” fluoroquinolones are extensively used in both human and veterinary medicine. Poor metabolism and recalcitrance of fluoroquinolones have led to their worldwide presence in municipal wastewaters as well as in manure and, consequently, in several environmental compartments. Being one of the most widely used fluoroquinolones in human medicine and, aside from that, the main metabolite of the veterinary drug enrofloxacin, ciprofloxacin is the most frequently detected fluoroquinolone in effluents of European wastewater treatment plants. Due to serious global concerns about the increasing emergence of bacterial (multi)resistances toward the highly efficient fluoroquinolones, special attention has been paid to their environmental degradation by various microorganisms. This review summarizes research on microbial transformation and degradation of fluoroquinolones with special emphasis on ciprofloxacin, presents an overview of the main ciprofloxacin biotransformation products, and takes a closer look at their biological relevance. Furthermore, own data, experiences, and publications gathered from our recent research in the field are acknowledged.

Abstract:Chlorimuron-ethyl is a selective pre- and post-emergence herbicide, which is widely used to control broad-leaved weeds in soybean fields. However, herbicide residues have also increased as a result of the pervasive use of chlorimuron-ethyl, which has become a significant environmental concern. Consequently, the removal of chlorimuron-ethyl residues from the environment has garnered significant attention in recent decades. A variety of technologies have been developed to address this issue, including adsorption, aqueous chlorination, photodegradation, Fenton, photo-Fenton, ozonation, and biodegradation. After extensive studies, the biodegradation of chlorimuron-ethyl by microorganisms has now been recognized as an efficient and environmentally friendly degradation process. As research has progressed, a number of microbial strains associated with chlorimuron-ethyl degradation have been identified, such as Pseudomonas sp., Klebsiella sp., Rhodococcus sp., Stenotrophomonas sp., Aspergillus sp., Hansschlegelia sp., and Enterobacter sp. In addition, the enzymes and genes responsible for chlorimuron-ethyl biodegradation are also being investigated. These degradation genes include sulE, pnbA, carE, gst, Kj-CysJ, Kj-eitD-2267, Kj-kdpD-226, Kj-dxs-398, Kj-mhpC-2096, and Kj-mhpC-2289, among others. The degradation enzymes associated with chlorimuron-ethyl biodegradation includes esterases (SulE, PnbA, and E3), carboxylesterase (CarE), Cytochrome P450, flavin monooxygenase (FMO), and glutathione-S-transferase (GST). Regrettably, few reviews have focused on the microbial degradation and molecular mechanisms of chlorimuron-ethyl. Therefore, this review covers the microbial degradation of chlorimuron-ethyl and its degradation pathways, the molecular mechanism of the microbial degradation of chlorimuron-ethyl, and the outlook on the practical application of the microbial degradation of sulfonylurea herbicides are all covered in this review's overview of previous studies into the degradation of chlorimuron-ethyl.

Abstract:Following their extensive use, azole antifungals may enter the environment through the discharge of domestic, industrial and hospital wastewaters, agricultural runoffs and as leachates in waste-disposal sites. The presence of the azole antifungals poses potential toxicity risks to non-target organisms and plays a critical role in the evolution and/or selection of azole resistant fungal strains in the environment. Toxicities such as inhibition of algal growth, endocrine disruption in fish, CYP450-effected steroidogenesis, modulating sex differentiation in frogs, and reduction of larval body mass and growth rate have been related to azole antifungals. In addition, the isolation of azole resistant fungi such as Aspergillus fumigatus in both the environment and clinic retaining similar mode of molecular drug resistance mechanism has drawn the attention of many researchers. Therefore, the investigation of the occurrence and distribution of azole antifungals as well as azole resistant environmental isolates of fungi is becoming a trendy research venue. Here we review the occurrence of antifungal azoles and azole resistance in the environment. The major points discussed are (1) an update on the environmental occurrence, distribution and ecological risks of the most commonly used azole antifungals in the environment including surface water and drinking water (2) environmental azole antifungal resistance, predominant molecular mechanisms of azole resistance in the environment, and the implications for human health (3) future trends and perspectives that could help reduce the ecological and human health risks of azoles and tackle the spread of azole resistance in the environment, and hence in the clinic.

Abstract:Synthetic chemicals including organochlorine pesticides pose environment and health hazard due to persistent and bio-accumulation property. Majority of them are recognized as endocrine disruptors. Fungi are ubiquitous in nature and employs efficient enzymatic machinery for the biotransformation and degradation of toxic, recalcitrant pollutants. This review critically discusses the organochlorine biotransformation process mediated by fungi and highlights the role of enzymatic system responsible for biotransformation, especially distribution of dehalogenase homologs among fungal classes. It also explores the potential use of fungal derived biomaterial, mainly chitosan as an adsorbing biomaterial for pesticides and heavy metals removal. Further, prospects of employing fungus to over-come the existing bioremediation limitations are discussed. The study highlights the potential scope of utilizing fungi for initial biotransformation purposes, preceding final biodegradation by bacterial species under environmental conditions.

Oxidant-mediated radical reactions of the azole fungicide TEB in aquatic media: Degradation mechanism and toxicity evolution

Abstract:The degradation of tebuconazole (TEB) by UV/H 2 O 2, UV/NaClO, and ozonation was investigated in this research. The experimental findings unveiled that under the specified conditions, the degradation percentages of TEB were raised to 99% within 40 s, 5 min, and 3 min for UV/H 2 O 2 , UV/NaClO and ozonation, respectively. The mineralization percentages within 1 h were 59%, 31% and 8% for the three AOPs. UV/H 2 O 2 and UV/NaClO technologies mainly acted through OH·, while O 3 treatment primarily relied on the free radicals such as 1 O 2 and O 2 · - . UV-based AOPs achieved almost complete dechlorination within 1 h, whereas O 3 treatment had a less effective dechlorination, reaching only 27.61%. Notably, UV alone achieved a dechlorination percentage of 43.07%. By identifying the TPs, we found that the three AOPs shared three similar degradation pathways. The degradation mechanism of TEB mainly entailed the removal of the benzene ring, tert -butyl group and triazolyl group. Toxicity assessment revealed an initial increase followed by a gradual decrease in toxicity for UV/NaClO and O 3 treatments, whereas UV/H 2 O 2 treatment exhibited a sustained decrease. This was due to the presence of TP278 and TP303 by UV/NaClO and TP168 and TP153 by ozonation. After estimating the costs of the three AOPs, UV/H 2 O 2 standed out as the best choice for achieving a 90% degradation percentage and exhibiting lower toxicity performance, while O 3 treatment was favored for low TOC demands. These research findings provided valuable reference for understanding the degradation mechanism and developing a new technology of the removal of TEB.

Transformation of macrolide antibiotics during chlorination process: Kinetics, degradation products, and comprehensive toxicity evaluation

Abstract:Antibiotics are ubiquitous in wastewater and surface water and their presence is of grave concern. Chlorination, an important disinfection process used in wastewater treatment plants and waterworks, causes antibiotics to be degraded. However, interactions of antibiotics with chlorine result in the generation of multiple transformation products (TPs). TPs may be more toxic than the parent compounds, but their structures, yields and ecotoxicity remain to be ascertained in most cases. This study examined the degradation by chlorine of two typical macrolide (MLs) antibiotics, erythromycin (ERY) and roxithromycin (ROX), and identified the TPs formed as a result of ERY and ROX chlorination. The ecotoxicity of ERY, ROX and their TPs was evaluated using a combination of bioassay and ECOSAR prediction. The degradation of ERY and ROX followed pseudo-first-order kinetic at the molar ratio of FAC to MLs of 10:1, and the degradation kinetic rate depends on pH values. Six TPs of ERY including three chlorinated TPs, and six TPs of ROX including two chlorinated TPs were identified. The tertiary N of the desosamine moiety of ERY and ROX was determined to be the main reactive site. Demethylation and chlorine substitution at the reactive site are the main degradation pathways of ERY and ROX. ECOSAR results showed that the chlorinated byproducts of ERY TP578, TP542 and TP528, and the reduced hydroxylation products of ROX TP851 exhibited higher ecotoxicity than their parent compounds. However, algae growth inhibition assays indicated that the overall ecotoxicity of the chlorinated ERY or ROX mixture was lower than that of ERY or ROX prior to chlorination. This may be attributed to the removal of the parent compound and lower yields of toxic substances. While the yields of the toxic TPs may be low, their accumulation and combined effects of the TPs and other co-occurring pollutants should be examined further.

Abstract:Fipronil is a highly active, broad spectrum insecticide with increasing and wide use. The degradation of fipronil was studied in Brazilian soil under oxic and anoxic conditions. Under oxic conditions, the half-life of fipronil was 16.9 days, with fipronil sulfone as the main metabolite, and no further degradation during 30 days of incubation. This degradation was accompanied by an increase of bacterial and archaeal ammonia oxidizers, as well as denitrifiers, and microorganisms related to Sphingomonas. Under anoxic conditions, a half-life of 15.7 days for fipronil was obtained, with fipronil sulphide as the primary metabolite, and fipronil sulfone at lower concentrations, with no further degradation of these metabolites during 90 days of incubation. In these conditions, complete degradation of fipronil was accompanied by an increase of denitrifiers, iron-reducers and ammonia oxidizers and selection of microorganisms that are related to uncultured Clostridiales (family VIII). Sulphate reducers and methanogens and most of the microbial community were not affected by fipronil and its metabolites. Toxicity evaluation, using in vitro effect-based CALUX assays confirmed that the metabolites have a similar toxic potency as compared to the parent compound fipronil. Therefore, the potential (eco)toxicity of fipronil does not seem to decrease upon microbial degradation.

Abstract:The fluoroquinolone ciprofloxacin occurs worldwide in the aquatic environment and has therefore been listed on the 3rd European union watchlist for monitoring. To eliminate sewage and wastewater treatment plants as entry pathways, advanced oxidation processes have been intensely researched. Hence, photolysis at different pH ranges was studied for its capacity to eradicate ciprofloxacin. High-performance liquid chromatography coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry was used to identify the degradation products and to monitor all compounds. Ecotoxicity was assessed using quantitative structure-activity relationship analysis comprising the Ecological Structure Activity Relationships tool. Two degradation mechanisms were found active: the direct mechanism, i.e. degradation through ultraviolet absorption by the substance, and the indirect mechanism caused by hydroxyl radicals from water photolysis. The radical scavenger tert -butanol and pH variations revealed that the indirect mechanism predominated in general. The direct photo-induced degradation proceeded about 10 times slower. Products could be attributed to the mechanisms. Based on their chemical structures, all identified products were predicted less toxic by quantitative structure-activity relationship than ciprofloxacin. Mechanistic insight suggested that photo-induced advanced oxidation processes proved efficient for ciprofloxacin elimination when generating hydroxyl radicals. Compounds and pH range hampering their occurrence diminish the efficacy of elimination.

Abstract:This study aimed at investigating the degradation of fungicide carbendazim (CBZ) via photo-Fenton reactions in artificially and solar irradiated photoreactors at laboratory scale and in a semi-pilot scale Raceway Pond Reactor (RPR), respectively. Acute toxicity was monitored by assessing the sensibility of bioluminescent bacteria (Aliivibrio fischeri) to samples taken during reactions. In addition, by-products formed during solar photo-Fenton were identified by liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (UFLC-MS). For tests performed in lab-scale, two artificial irradiation sources were compared (UVλ > 254nm and UV-Visλ > 320nm). A complete design of experiments was performed in the semi-pilot scale RPR in order to optimize reaction conditions (Fe2+ and H2O2 concentrations, and water depth). Efficient degradation of carbendazim (> 96%) and toxicity removal were achieved via artificially irradiated photo-Fenton under both irradiation sources. Control experiments (UV photolysis and UV-Vis peroxidation) were also efficient but led to increased acute toxicity. In addition, H2O2/UVλ > 254nm required longer reaction time (60 minutes) when compared to the photo-Fenton process (less than 1 min). While Fenton’s reagent achieved high CBZ and acute toxicity removal, its efficiency demands higher concentration of reagents in comparison to irradiated processes. Solar photo-Fenton removed carbendazim within 15 min of reaction (96%, 0.75 kJ L−1), and monocarbomethoxyguanidine, benzimidazole isocyanate, and 2-aminobenzimidazole were identified as transformation products. Results suggest that both solar photo-Fenton and artificially irradiated systems are promising routes for carbendazim degradation.

Abstract:UV/Cl is a cost-effective process and is often used in municipal water treatment plants as well as in industrial applications. UV/Cl method is found highly effective in degrading contaminants, including pathogens, The conventional methods for water treatment have been proven inefficient for the complete elimination of pollutants and generate harmful by-products in the environment. This study evaluated the efficacy of three different treatment methods, chlorination alone, UV photolysis, and UV/Cl, for the degradation of sulfonamides (SAs) in water. The results highlighted that UV/Cl treatment was an efficient method for enhancing the degradation of sulfisoxazole (SFX), sulfadimethoxine (SAT), and sulfaguanidine (SG), with substrates degrading in 5, 6.5, and 4 minutes. The study also investigated the reactive species generated in the UV/Cl system and found that •OH was the species responsible for the elimination of SFX. Additionally, the study explored the intermediate products generated during the degradation of SFX under the UV/Cl system, identifying VI distinct degradation pathways. The presence of •OH radicals significantly enhanced the degradation of SFX, while some chlorine species also contributed to the degradation. The study predicted the toxicity of degradation products from the UV/Cl system using the ECOSAR (Ecological Structure Activity Relationships) program and found that the final degradation products of SFX were non-toxic, but concerns were raised about acute toxicity.

Abstract:Improper waste disposal or inadequate wastewater treatment can result in pharmaceuticals reaching water bodies, posing environmental hazards. In this study, crude extracts containing the laccase enzyme from Pleurotus florida , Pleurotus eryngii , and Pleurotus sajor caju were used to degrade the fluoroquinolone antibiotics (FQs) levofloxacin (LEV), norfloxacin (NOR), ciprofloxacin (CIP), ofloxacin (OFL), and enrofloxacin (ENR) in aqueous solutions. The results for the fungi derived laccase extracts were compared with those obtained using commercially sourced laccase. Proteomics analysis of the crude extracts confirmed the presence of laccase enzyme across all three tested species, with proteins matching those found in Trametes versicolor and Pleurotus ostreatus . In vivo studies were conducted using species pure lines of fungal whole cells. The highest degradation efficiency observed was 77.7% for LEV in the presence of P. sajor caju after 25 days of treatment. Degradation efficiencies ranged from approximately 60-72% for P. florida , 45–76% for P. eryngii , and 47–78% for P. sajor caju . A series of in vitro experiments were also conducted using crude extracts from the three species and outcomes compared with those obtained when commercial laccase was used confirmed laccase as the enzyme responsible for antibiotic removal. The degradation efficiencies in vitro surpassed those measured in vivo , ranging from approximately 91-98% for commercial laccase, 77–92% for P. florida , 76–92% for P. eryngii , and 78–88% for P. sajor caju . Liquid chromatography–high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) identified the degradation products, indicating a consistent enzymatic degradation pathway targeting the piperazine moiety common to all tested FQs, irrespective of the initial antibiotic structure. Phytoplankton toxicity studies with Dunaliella tertiolecta were performed to aid in understanding the impact of emerging contaminants on ecosystems, and by-products were analysed for ecotoxicity to assess treatment efficacy. Laccase-mediated enzymatic oxidation shows promising results in reducing algal toxicity, notably with Pleurotus eryngii extract achieving a 97.7% decrease for CIP and a 90% decrease for LEV. These findings suggest the potential of these naturally sourced extracts in mitigating antibiotic contamination in aquatic ecosystems.

Abstract:Ametoctradin fungicide's ecotoxicological and lithospheric sorption properties have been thoroughly assessed through a variety of experimental techniques that mimic natural environmental circumstances. To achieve this, the current study examined the sorption and degradation of Ametoctradin in 10 different soil samples under carefully monitored laboratory conditions. The negative values of Gibbs-free energy (Δ G ), which range from − 15.78 to − 23.56 kj/mol in thermodynamic analysis with a C-type curve are extensively assessed using both linear and Freundlich models. SS5 (soil with highest organic matter) depicted the maximum adsorption ( K d = 41.15 μg/ml), while SS8 (depicting low organic matter content) showed the lowest adsorption extent ( K d = 10.38 μg/ml). GC–MS analysis and UV–visible spectrophotometry were used to evaluate the hydrolytic and photolytic processes involved in Ametoctradin degradation. According to the findings, the hydrolytic and photolytic assays had lowest half-life values of 28.7 and 55.2 days, respectively. Furthermore, the Ametoctradin degradation followed first order reaction kinetics. Soil sample SS6 showed the maximum hydrolytic degradation (57%) due to higher sand content (42%), while SS3 showed the lowest hydrolytic degradation (21%) due to higher silt and clay content. The findings indicated that Ametoctradin exhibited above average binding to the chosen soils, resulting in medium to low persistence as shown by degradation values. Overall, this study offers insightful knowledge about the behavior and fate of Ametoctradin in various soil types, which can help with the creation of practical management plans and environmental risk assessments.

Abstract:Sulfonamides (SAs) are widespread in aquatic environments and pose serious environmental risks. The removal efficiencies and degradation mechanisms of SAs in both chemical and biological degradation systems were comprehensively reviewed. Density functional theory (DFT) was utilized to decipher the reaction types and reactive sites of both degradation mechanisms at the electron level. In chemical degradation, the rate of the reactive oxidants to degrade SAs follows the order SO4•- ≈ •OH > O3 > 1O2 > ClO2 ≈ Fe(VI) ≈ HOCl > peroxymonosulfate. pH affects the oxidation-reduction potentials of oxidants, the reactivity of SAs, and the intermolecular force between oxidants and SAs, thereby affecting the chemical degradation efficiencies and mechanisms. In biological degradation, oxidoreductase produced by bacteria, fungi, algae, and plants can degrade SAs. The catalytic activity of the enzyme is affected by the enzyme system, reaction conditions, and type of SAs. Despite the different reaction modes and removal efficiencies of SAs in chemical degradation and biological degradation, the transformation pathways and products show commonalities. Modification of the amino (N1H2-) moiety and destruction of sulfonamide bridge (-SO2-N11H-) moiety are the main pathways for both chemical and biological degradation of SAs. Most oxidants or enzymes can react with the N1H2- moiety. Reactions of the -SO2-N11H- moiety are mainly initiated by the cleavage of S-N bonds for five-membered heterocyclic ring-substituted SAs, and by SO2 extrusion for six-membered heterocyclic ring-substituted SAs. Chlorine substitution and coupling on the N1H2- moiety, hydroxylation of the benzene moiety, oxidation of methyl, and isomerization of the R substituents are the transformation pathways unique to chemical degradation. Formylation/acetylation, glycosylation, pterin conjugation, and deamination of the N1H2- moiety are the transformation pathways unique to biological degradation. DFT studies revealed the same reaction types and the same reactive sites of SAs in chemical and biological degradation. Electrophiles are mostly prone to attack the N1 atom on the amino moiety of neutral SAs and the N11 atom on the sulfonamide bridge moiety of anionic SAs, leading to nitration or electrophilic substitution of the amino moiety and the cleavage of S-N bonds or SO2 extrusion of the sulfonamide bridge moiety. Reactions on the -SO2-N11H- moiety eliminate antibacterial activity in the SA degradation process. This review elucidated SA transformation by comparing the chemical and biological degradation of SAs. This could provide theoretical guidance for the development of more efficient and economical treatment technologies for SAs.

Abstract:Assessing the interactions between environmental pollutants and these mixtures is of paramount significance in understanding their negative effects on aquatic ecosystems. However, existing research often lacks comprehensive investigations into the physiological and biochemical mechanisms underlying these interactions. This study aimed to reveal the toxic mechanisms of cyproconazole (CYP), imazalil (IMA), and prochloraz (PRO) and corresponding these mixtures on Auxenochlorella pyrenoidosa by analyzing the interactions at physiological and biochemical levels. Higher concentrations of CYP, IMA, and PRO and these mixtures resulted in a reduction in chlorophyll (Chl) content and increased total protein (TP) suppression, and malondialdehyde (MDA) content exhibited a negative correlation with algal growth. The activity of catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) decreased with increasing azole fungicides and their mixture concentrations, correlating positively with growth inhibition. Azole fungicides induced dose-dependent apoptosis in A. pyrenoidosa , with higher apoptosis rates indicative of greater pollutant toxicity. The results revealed concentration-dependent toxicity effects, with antagonistic interactions at low concentrations and synergistic effects at high concentrations within the CYP-IMA mixtures. These interactions were closely linked to the interactions observed in Chl- a , carotenoid (Car), CAT, and cellular apoptosis. The antagonistic effects of CYP-PRO mixtures on A. pyrenoidosa growth inhibition can be attributed to the antagonism observed in Chl- a , Chl- b , Car, TP, CAT, SOD, and cellular apoptosis. This study emphasized the importance of gaining a comprehensive understanding of the physiological and biochemical interactions within algal cells, which may help understand the potential mechanism of toxic interaction.
