Abstract:The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the critical need for effective air filtration systems in healthcare environments to mitigate the spread of viral and bacterial pathogens. This study explores the utilization of copper nanoparticle-coated materials for air filtration, offering both antiviral and antimicrobial properties. Highly uniform spherical copper oxide nanoparticles (~10 nm) were synthesized via a spinning disc reactor and subsequently functionalized with carboxylated ligands to ensure colloidal stability in aqueous solutions. The functionalized copper oxide nanoparticles were applied as antipathogenic coatings on extruded polyethylene and melt-blown polypropylene fibers to assess their efficacy in air filtration applications. Notably, Type IIR medical facemasks incorporating the copper nanoparticle-coated polyethylene fibers demonstrated a >90% reduction in influenza virus and SARS-CoV-2 within 2 h of exposure. Similarly, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) filtration pre- (polyester) and post (polypropylene)-filtration media were functionalised with the copper nanoparticles and exhibited a 99% reduction in various viral and bacterial strains, including SARS-CoV-2, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Acinetobacter baumannii, Salmonella enterica, and Escherichia coli. In both cases, this mitigates not only the immediate threat from these pathogens but also the risk of biofouling and secondary risk factors. The assessment of leaching properties confirmed that the copper nanoparticle coatings remained intact on the polymeric fiber surfaces without releasing nanoparticles into the solution or airflow. These findings highlight the potential of nanoparticle-coated materials in developing biocompatible and environmentally friendly air filtration systems for healthcare settings, crucial in combating current and future pandemic threats.

Efficient nanoparticles removal and bactericidal action of electrospun nanofibers membranes for air filtration

Abstract:Human exposure to air pollution and especially to nanoparticles is increasing due to the combustion of carbon-based energy vectors. Fibrous filters are among the various types of equipment potentially able to remove particles from the air. Nanofibers are highly effective in this area; however, their utilization is still a challenge due to the lack of studies taking into account both nanoparticle collection efficiency and antibacterial effect. The aim of this work is to produce and evaluate novel silver/polyacrylonitrile (Ag/PAN) electrospun fibers deposited on a nonwoven substrate to be used as air filters to remove nanoparticles from the air and also showing antibacterial activity. In order to determine the optimum manufacturing conditions, the effects of several electrospinning process parameters were analyzed such as solution concentration, collector to needle distance, flow rate, voltage, and duration. Ag/PAN nanofibers were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Fourier Transform Infra-Red spectroscopy (FTIR), Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). In addition, filtration performances were determined by measuring the pressure drop and collection efficiency of sodium chloride (NaCl) aerosol particles (9 to 300 nm diameters) using Scanning Mobility Particle Sizers (SMPS). Filters with high filtration efficiency (≈100%) and high-quality factor (≈0.05 Pa-1) were obtained even adding different concentrations of Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) to PAN nanofibers. The resultant Ag/PAN nanofibers showed excellent antibacterial activity against 104 CFU/mL E. coli bacteria.

Abstract:According to the World Health Organization, low-quality air results in 3.2 million premature annual deaths of which 21 % are attributed to respiratory infections. The recent coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, responsible for millions of deaths worldwide, has highlighted the issue of airborne pathogens on human health. Air filtration is an established method to ensure good indoor air quality, being effective at capturing airborne particles and dust, as well as pathogens, and preventing diseases such as asthma. Nevertheless, with usage, water from air humidity, dust, and dirt, including fungi and bacteria spores, can accumulate on filters creating ideal conditions for the propagation of microorganisms. Thus, the filter can become a secondary source for airborne pathogens. In this work, antiviral and antibacterial filters were prepared by spray coating Ag 2 O, CuO, and ZnO particles into commercially available air filters. The reliability of the filters was tested through particle release in air, through a scanning mobility particle sizer, and filtration performance was measured against an aerosol of iron nanoparticles in nitrogen gas produced through a spark discharge generator. Additionally, the biosafety of the filters was measured in vitro through cytotoxicity tests against L-929 mouse fibroblast cells. Antibacterial activity was measured in vitro against two clinically relevant pathogens: Streptococcus pneumoniae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa and the anti-viral performance was measured against human respiratory syncytial virus. In general, the results have shown that spray coating is a reliable solution, with no detectable cytotoxicity effects or particle release in the air. After functionalization, both Ag 2 O and CuO compounds have been shown to have total antiviral activity (over 99 %), while only Ag 2 O presented a clear antibacterial action. In conclusion, spray coating as post-manufacturing functionalization of air filters can be an efficient and low-cost solution against airborne pathogens.

Abstract:Ultrafine particulate matter and airborne microorganisms present in the atmosphere significantly affect human health, leading to serious respiratory diseases. Among these particulates are bioaerosols, which include viruses, bacteria, and fungi. When inhaled, these microorganisms can cause diseases, such as influenza, tuberculosis, and COVID-19. Therefore, the development of bifunctional membranes that can simultaneously filter particulate matter (PM) and inhibit microorganism growth is essential. Electrospun filters, known for their high surface area, are effective in capturing these airborne particles. This study presents a novel approach by incorporating various surfactants into electrospun filters made from 8% polyacrylonitrile (PAN). The surfactants used include cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), widely cited in the literature for bactericidal filtering applications, as well as sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC), which are rarely used in electrospun filters for this purpose. The addition of surfactants enhanced the filter performance, capturing particles smaller than 250 nm with over 99% efficiency for particles between 6.38 and 242 nm. The pressure drop across the filters ranged from 111.4 ± 1.2 to 204.4 ± 1.1 Pa. Moreover, the incorporation of surfactants not only improved hydrophobic and hydrophilic properties—where hydrophobic nanofibers performed better for filtration—but also significantly increased antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus (97.25 ± 0.95%) and Escherichia coli (94.52 ± 2.37%). These filters not only capture particles but also inactivate pathogens, contributing to a healthier environment. Filters with biocidal properties are particularly useful in hospitals, laboratories, and other settings where air sterility is critical.

Martins The purpose of this study was to investigate a potential antimicrobial activity of biodegradable cellulose acetate (CA)/ cetylpyridinium bromide (CPB) nanofiber filters produced by electrospinning technique. Samples of these nanofibers were produced over a nonwoven substrate, using a polymeric solution in the electrospinning process. Wettability tests were performed by measuring the contact angle of droplets of water deposited on their surface. The evaluation of the antibacterial properties of the nanofibers was performed for Escherichia coli using quantitative methods. Regarding the contact angle measurement, it presented about 63o, showing that this material can be wetted by water. The antibacterial test results showed that the use of the surfactant provides antibacterial properties to the CA/CPB nanofibers, presenting 100% reduction for bacteria. Further studies are necessary, however, these preliminary results showed that, based on these features, the nanofibers could be applied as a filter media for indoor air conditioning systems, mainly due to their biocidal properties.

Abstract:Often, solid matter is separated from particle-laden flow streams using electrospun filters due to their high specific surface area, good ability to capture aerial particulate matter, and low material costs. Moreover, electrospinning allows incorporating nanoparticles to improve the filter’s air filtration efficiency and bacterial removal. Therefore, a new, improved polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers membrane that could be used to remove air pollutants and also with antibacterial activity was developed. We engineered three different filters that are characterized by the different particles embedded in the PAN nanofibers: titanium dioxide (TiO2), zinc oxide (ZnO), and silver (Ag). Then, their filtration performance was assessed by quantifying the filtration of sodium chloride (NaCl) aerosol particles of 9 to 300 nm in diameter using a scanning mobility particle sizer. The TiO2_F filter displayed the smallest fiber diameter and the highest filtration efficiency (≈100%). Conversely, the Ag_F filter showed the highest quality factor (≈0.06 Pa−1) because of the lower air pressure drop. The resulting Ag_F nanofibers displayed a very good antibacterial activity using an Escherichia coli suspension (108 CFU/mL). Moreover, the quality factor of these membranes was higher than that of the commercially available nanofiber membrane for air filtration.

Abstract:Pathogenic microorganisms are a major concern in indoor environments, particularly in sensitive facilities such as hospitals, due to their potential to cause nosocomial infections. This study evaluates the concentration of airborne bacteria and fungi in the University Hospital Complex of Albacete (Spain), comparing the results with recent literature. Staphylococcus is identified as the most prevalent bacterial genus with a percentage distribution of 35%, while Aspergillus represents the dominant fungal genus at 34%. The lack of high Technology Readiness Levels (TRL 6, TRL 7) for effective indoor air purification requires research efforts to bridge this knowledge gap. A screening of disinfection technologies for pathogenic airborne microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi is conducted. The integration of filtration, irradiation or and (electro)chemical gas treatment systems in duct flows is discussed to enhance the design of the air-conditioning systems for indoor air purification. Concerns over microbial growth have led to recent studies on coating commercial fibrous air filters with antimicrobial particles (silver nanoparticles, iron oxide nanowires) and polymeric materials (polyaniline, polyvinylidene fluoride). Promising alternatives to traditional short-wave UV-C energy for disinfection include LED and Far-UVC irradiation systems. Additionally, research explores the use of TiO2 and TiO2 doped with metals (Ag, Cu, Pt) in filters with photocatalytic properties, enabling the utilization of visible or solar light. Hybrid photocatalysis, combining TiO2 with polymers, carbon nanomaterials, or MXene nanomaterials, enhances the photocatalytic process. Chemical treatment systems such as aerosolization of biocidal agents (benzalkonium chloride, hydrogen peroxide, chlorine dioxide or ozone) with their possible combination with other technologies such as adsorption, filtration or photocatalysis, are also tested for gas disinfection. However, the limited number of studies on the use of electrochemical technology poses a challenge for further investigation into gas-phase oxidant generation, without the formation of harmful by-products, to raise its TRL for effectively inactivating airborne microorganisms in indoor environments.
Efficient Air Disinfection Achieved by Nanowire Modified Copper Mesh Electrodes

Abstract:Airborne pathogens can widely spread and cause severe diseases in humans, concerning the risks of indoor exposure in hospitals, homes, and malls. Therefore, the inactivation of pathogens in indoor air environments is important. The inactivation of microorganisms in water by nanowire electroporation has been well studied in recent years. But the effectiveness of nanowire-modified electrodes for air disinfection is still unknown. In this study, a disinfection method for the quick inactivation of bacteria in air is reported. The copper meshes were modified with Cu(OH)2 nanowires by electrochemical method. A flow-through device with nanowire-modified electrodes inside was designed to generate, mix, and disinfect bioaerosols. 60-85% inactivation efficiency for bacteria and more than 2-log removal for viruses were achieved with a short air retention time of 0.3 s in high humidity (RH of 100%). Endospores showed a susceptibility to electric disinfection similar to that of the vegetable cells. The inactivation efficiency of bacteria in moderate humidity (RH of 40%) could be significantly improved up to 51% by coating with a high conductive material, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene-4-sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS). The main inactivation mechanism in air was demonstrated as electroporation by detecting membrane integrity. This novel disinfection method may be applied for the disinfection of air-transmitted pathogens in the future.
Photothermal Electrospun Nanofibers Containing Polydopamine-Coated Halloysite Nanotubes as Antibacterial Air Filters

Abstract:Antibacterial air filter media offer an important solution to indoor air pollution from bioaerosols, which pose a serious threat to global public health. In this study, we introduced an antibacterial air filter based on nanofibers functionalized with a photothermal agent, which deactivates bacteria upon near-infrared (NIR) irradiation. Halloysite nanotube (HNT) clay nanoparticles coated with polydopamine (PDA), which heat up when exposed to NIR light, were utilized as photothermal agents to be incorporated into polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers. The resulting PAN/HNT-PDA nanofibers reached 102 °C after 2 min of NIR irradiation and physically destroyed Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) cells that were in contact with the nanofibers. In a simulated air filtration test system, photothermal nanofibers demonstrated a bioaerosol filtration efficiency of 99.97% and a quality factor of 0.14 Pa–1. 107 S. aureus cells captured on the nanofibers were killed via a 10 min NIR-light irradiation, whereas the light-activated antibacterial properties of the nanofibers were maintained over 5 bioaerosol flow/NIR-treatment cycles. The photothermal agent-containing electrospun nanofibers presented here have a strong potential for aerosol removal as light-activated antibacterial air filters.

Doping metal–organic framework composites to antibacterial air filter development for quality control of indoor air

Abstract:Building airtightness for acquiring greater energy efficiency have impacted indoor air quality. The control of pollution requires air filtration. Bioaerosols serve as an essential quality indicator of indoor air. The contamination of bioaerosols is a filtration barrier. The present study proposes a novel metal–organic framework (MOFs) antimicrobial air filter. This study is the first to employ Ag/MOFs/IMI in order to build an air filter for the deactivation and removal of indoor airborne microbes. The media of the Ag/MOFs/IMI/EPA filter was fabricated using the dip‐coating of Ag/MOFs/IMI by imidazole and silver NPs. The deactivation and removal efficiency of the Ag/MOFs/IMI/EPA filter was assessed by bioaerosols, including “Escherichia coli” (E. coli) and “Staphylococcus aureus” (S. aureus) within a closed‐loop chamber at the RH degrees of 30% and 70%. The findings suggested that the Ag/MOFs/IMI filter's removal efficiency by nearly 17.88% without significant increase in pressure drop in comparison to the raw EPA filter for the bioaerosol of S. aureus. Furthermore, the Ag/MOFs/IMI filter media's deactivation efficiency under 3% loading was obtained to be 95.62% ± 1.2% and 99.4% ± 3.25% for the bioaerosol of S. aureus at an RH of 30% and 70%, respectively. Moreover, the E. coli deactivation efficiency under an Ag/MOFs/IMI loading of 1% was found to be 68.33% ± 1.98% and 96.27% ± 3.04% for an RH of 30% and 70%, respectively. The findings indicated the Ag/MOFs/IMI filter's media to be able to effectively inactivate bioaerosols and prevent their spread from the air filter into the indoor place. Furthermore, these findings provide a pioneer contribution to the antibacterial quality development of commercial filters.

Abstract:The demand for improved indoor air quality, especially during the pandemic of Covid-19, has led to renewed interest in antiviral and antibacterial air-conditioning systems. Here, air filters of vehicles made of nonwoven polyester filter media were sonochemically coated with CuO nanoparticles by a roll-to-roll coating method. The product, aimed at providing commuters with high air quality, showed good stability and mechanical properties and potent activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria, H1N1 influenza, and two SARS-CoV-2 variants. The filtering properties of a coated filter were tested, and they were similar to those of the uncoated filter. Leaching tests as a function of airflow were conducted, and the main outcome was that the coating was stable and particles were not detached from the coated media. Extension to other air-conditioning systems was straightforward.
Preparation of multifunctional AgNPs/PAN nanofiber membrane for air filtration by one-step process

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this paper is to fabricate a high-performance filtration electrospun nanofiber membrane with antibacterial function. The Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) gotten by reducing AgNO 3 act as antimicrobial agent. Then the AgNPs/Polyacrylonitrile (AgNPs/PAN) composite nanofiber membrane was prepared by electrospinning. Design/methodology/approach The electrospun Ag/PAN composite membrane was prepared by one step, in which the Ag particles were acting as antibacterial agent and PAN nanofiber as the upholder of the composite mat. AgNPs were obtained by reducing AgNO3 in N,N-Dimethylformamide (DMF) solution at high temperature. Meanwhile, the PAN particles were added to DMF solution and dissolved. Then the Ag/PAN nanofiber was obtained by electrospinning. Findings The thinner nanofiber can be produced with PAN concentration of 12 per cent and AgNPs concentration of 10 per cent. Finally, the filtration resistance of the composite membrane with antibacterial property is as high as 99.1 per cent, and the filtration efficiency is only 83 Pa. Therefore, the AgNPs/PAN composite membrane is the ideal choice for air filtration with antibacterial property. Originality/value The AgNPs/PAN composite nanofiber membrane has high filtration performance for particulate matter (PM)25 and outstanding antibacterial property to Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus , which can be used with masks, air-conditioning filters (including car air-conditioning filters), window screening and other similar objects.

Abstract:Particulate matter and airborne microorganisms are two of the most severe indoor air problems due to their significant risks to human health. Comprehensive research on air filtration with good filtration performance for fine particles and antibacterial function is essential. In this study, after some experimentations and optimization of conditions, polyacrylonitrile (PAN) 10–1% silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) membranes with suitable morphology and uniform diameter distribution are fabricated by an electrospinning method. These electrospun mats exhibited antibacterial activity toward Staphylococcus aureus (Gram-positive bacteria) and Escherichia coli (Gram-negative bacteria). With its small pore size, high porosity, the high specific surface area of 42 m 2 /g, and robust mechanical strength of 7.14 MPa properties, the resultant PAN10%-1%Ag membranes exhibit high filtration efficiency of 99.27%, the low pressure drop of 33 Pa, and higher quality factor compared to the two standard commercial masks including, the three-ply surgical mask and the respirator face mask. After 24 h of the filtration process in a simulated living environment, the obtained air filter still displayed a high filtration efficiency and a less pressure drop variation. In addition, the R 2 value was 0.99, which indicates that the calculation results are in good agreement with the measured results. The fabrication of PAN-Ag membranes will have broad applications, including face masks, indoor air filtration and clean room.

Therefore, multifunctional materials that can filter these pollutants and kill pathogenic bacteria simultaneously are urgently desired. Herein, a copper-coordinated nanofibrous membrane, named PAN-P-Cu, was successfully prepared based on polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers grafted polyethyleneimine (PEI) by electrospinning and coordination assembly method. The PAN-P-Cu showed high filtration efficiency (99.9%) towards PM0.3 under an airflow velocity of 5.3 cm s−1 and high filtration efficiency (99.94%) towards PM10, respectively. Importantly, used membrane could be regenerated by a simple washing process. Moreover, PAN-P-Cu possessed removal property of 60 mg g−1 for hydrogen sulfide through the occurrence of chemical reactions. Furthermore, the PAN-P-Cu also exhibited excellent antibacterial activities against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus (>99.99%). This work may provide new insights on designing high-performance and multi-functional air filtration materials for public health protection in complicated environments.

Abstract:The presence of airborne viruses in bioaerosols is a significant and ongoing public health concern. In this context, this study aimed to develop a new filter that integrates nanosilver into a TiO 2 -chitosan matrix (nano-Ag/TiO 2 -CS) to inactivate the non-enveloped bacteriophage MS2 as a viral aerosol surrogate. The materials were characterized using various techniques, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The SEM images showed that the nano-Ag particles were spheres with a high surface area for virus interactions and that the fiber surfaces were covered by nano-Ag, which enhanced contact with viruses. The optimal 5 wt% nano-Ag/TiO 2 -CS filter combined with a negative air ionizer (NAI) showed the highest viral aerosol removal efficiency, which reached 97 %. The use of an NAI during filtration enhanced the inactivation of the viral aerosols. A long-term antiviral efficacy assessment showed that the nano-Ag/TiO 2 -CS filter demonstrated robust durability, which is vital for real-world applications. The nanofilter proposed in this work is simple, safe, and cost-effective for inactivating viral aerosols to improve indoor air quality.

Abstract:The incorporation of metal oxide nanoparticles (NPs) in fiber filters is an effective approach to enhance the specific surface area and surface roughness of the fiber, hence improving their efficiency for fine dust capture and other gas treatment or biological applications. Nevertheless, uneven distribution of NPs limits their practical applications. In this study, a commercial silane coupling agent (3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane) was used to improve the dispersion of zinc oxide (ZnO) NPs in thin polyacrylonitrile fibers. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed that the fibers incorporating the silane-modified NPs exhibited better distribution of NPs than those prepared with pristine ZnO NPs. The silane modification enhanced the specific surface area, surface roughness, and fiber porosity. In particular, the nanofiber filter incorporating 12 wt% ZnO NPs modified with 0.5 g silane per g of ZnO NPs maintained a filtration efficiency of 99.76% with a low pressure drop of 44 Pa, excellent antibacterial activity, and could decompose organic methylene blue dye with an efficiency of 85.11% under visible light.

Abstract:Two natural products; i.e., grapefruit seed extract (GSE) and propolis, were investigated for use in antimicrobial air filters. Staphylococcus aureus was investigated as a test bioaerosol, and was deposited on the antimicrobial filters, which were treated by spraying with various areal densities of GSE and propolis. The pressure drop and particle penetration were investigated to assess the filtration performance of the bioaerosol, and the bacterial-inactivation performance of the filters was evaluated by quantifying S. aureus. There was little change in the pressure drop as a function of the areal density of GSE up to 185.9 μg/cm2; however, a significant change in the pressure drop was found for the air filter coated with propolis at an areal density of 98.4 μg/cm2. The penetration levels of bioaerosols in both filters were uniform and in the range 1.4–2.0% (based on particle number), regardless of the areal density of the deposited GSE or propolis. The inactivation rates of the filters with identical deposition masses of GSE and propolis were similar in the ranges of 92.1–100%, 75.2–89.1%, and 54.4–75.5% at the control filters with colony numbers of 103, 104, and 105 CFU/mL, respectively. The bacterial inactivation rate could be described by an exponential function of the areal density of GSE/propolis per number of colonies. Copyright 2015 American Association for Aerosol Research

Abstract:The transmission of bacteria and respiratory viruses through expelled saliva microdroplets and aerosols is a significant concern for healthcare workers, further highlighted during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. To address this issue, the development of nanomaterials with antimicrobial properties for use as nanolayers in respiratory protection equipment, such as facemasks or respirators, has emerged as a potential solution. In this study, a silver and copper nanolayer called SakCu® was deposited on one side of a spun-bond polypropylene fabric using the magnetron sputtering technique. The antibacterial and antiviral activity of the AgCu nanolayer was evaluated against droplets falling on the material and aerosols passing through it. The effectiveness of the nanolayer was assessed by measuring viral loads of the enveloped virus SARS-CoV-2 and viability assays using respiratory surrogate viruses, including PaMx54, PaMx60, PaMx61 (ssRNA, Leviviridae ), and PhiX174 (ssDNA, Microviridae ) as representatives of non-enveloped viruses. Colony forming unit (CFU) determination was employed to evaluate the survival of aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. The results demonstrated a nearly exponential reduction in SARS-CoV-2 viral load, achieving complete viral load reduction after 24 hours of contact incubation with the AgCu nanolayer. Viability assays with the surrogate viruses showed a significant reduction in viral replication between 2–4 hours after contact. The simulated viral filtration system demonstrated inhibition of viral replication ranging from 39% to 64%. The viability assays with PhiX174 exhibited a 2-log reduction in viral replication after 24 hours of contact and a 16.31% inhibition in viral filtration assays. Bacterial growth inhibition varied depending on the species, with reductions ranging from 70% to 92% for aerobic bacteria and over 90% for anaerobic strains. In conclusion, the AgCu nanolayer displayed high bactericidal and antiviral activity in contact and aerosol conditions. Therefore, it holds the potential for incorporation into personal protective equipment to effectively reduce and prevent the transmission of aerosol-borne pathogenic bacteria and respiratory viruses.
