Abstract:The evaluation index system of urban aquatic ecosystem health is of great significance for the assessment and management of urban river networks, and for urban development planning. In this paper, the concept of urban aquatic ecosystem health was analyzed by the relationship between human, city and aquatic ecosystem, and its evaluation index system was established from environmental conditions, ecological construction, and social service. In addition, the weight value of each index was calculated by the analytic hierarchy process, and the grading standard of each index was set. Jiading New City, a typical city of the river network plain area in Yangtze River delta, was selected as the aquatic ecosystem health evaluation sample. The fuzzy comprehensive method was used to evaluate the aquatic ecosystem health of Jiading New City. The results indicated that the water ecosystem health of Jiading New City reached the “good” level. For the criterion level, environmental conditions and ecological construction reached the “good” level, and social services reached the “excellent” level. For the indicator level, most indicators reached “good” and “excellent” levels, but the river complexity and benthic macroinvertebrate diversity are still in the “poor” state, which indicates that the aquatic environment has greatly improved, but the aquatic ecosystem has not been fully restored. Results suggested that river complexity and biodiversity should be increased in urban construction planning. The evaluation index system established in this paper can be used to reflect the urban aquatic ecosystem health conditions in river network plain areas.

Abstract:Because of the rapid growth in urbanization over recent decades, urban aquatic ecosystems have been subjected to unprecedented threats and challenges. In this study, we visited 48 sites, of which 14 were reservoir sites, in water bodies in Jinan, China, on six occasions in May, August, and October of 2014 and 2015. We sampled fish, macroinvertebrates, and phytoplankton assemblages and physicochemical factors at each site. We used the richness and diversity of fish, macroinvertebrates, and phytoplankton to evaluate the condition of the aquatic ecosystems of the river sites. We also evaluated the water quality of the reservoir sites using the physicochemical factors of the State Environmental Protection Administration of China. We classified the results into five levels—excellent, good, moderate, poor, and bad—with the comprehensive evaluation index (CEI). More than 40% of the sampling sites were in either poor or bad condition. Nearly half of the excellent or good sites were in the south of Jinan. The CEI was significantly different between the reference and impaired sites; it was significantly and positively correlated with the qualitative habitat evaluation index and was significantly and negatively correlated with conductivity, total alkalinity, and ammonia nitrogen.

Abstract:Lakes within river-floodplain ecosystems are key biodiversity refuges majorly threatened by eutrophication and hydrologic river-lake fragmentation. However, an integrative index, specifically designed to comprehensively assess the health of floodplain lakes, considering multiple biological taxa and major stressors, remains unavailable. Based on biological data collected from 68 isolated lakes in the eastern plain lake region of China, we constructed a reliable index for assessing floodplain lake ecosystem health: Integrated Bioassessment Index (L-IBAI). The L-IBAI consists of components of overall health and species diversity, eutrophication, and hydrological connectivity and water level regimes. To construct the L-IBAI, we firstly used the observed species ( S O )-area ( A ) model to predict the expected species richness ( S E ), and then developed observed to expected indices by calculating the S O / S E ratio for fish (F-O/E- SA ) and benthos (B-O/E- SA ). The health level thresholds for the other four indices, namely the ratio of Secchi depth and water depth (Z SD /Z M ), chlorophyll a in phytoplankton (Chl a ), the percent of rheophile fish species, and emergent macrophytes coverage, were determined using cumulative frequency curves. The final L-IBAI score was obtained by summing the weighted values of the three components mentioned earlier. The L-IBAI can significantly discriminate rural from urban lakes, and is a reliable index for assessing lake ecosystem health. Moreover, we developed three simplified three-index integrated bioassessment indices, which consists of three indices belonging to the three elements are also effective. The developed L-IBAI is flexible to be extended and applied to other floodplain lakes, and outcomes of health assessments for the eastern plain lakes in China helped to identify conservation and restoration priorities.

Abstract:Biological integrity refers to the capacity to sustain a healthy ecosystem comprising multiple biological communities within a region. Robust assessments of biological integrity thus require the sampling of multiple biological groups. We evaluated the ecological health of the Qingyi River Basin (QRB) using three indexes of biotic integrity (IBIs), including those based on the phytoplankton (P-IBI), zooplankton (Z-IBI), and benthos (B-IBI), and found that the health of the QRB system was “good” according to P-IBI (75.9 ± 17.9), Z-IBI (74.8 ± 21.8), and WQI (92.2 ± 5.3) and “moderate” according to B-IBI (43.8 ± 16.1). The assessments of the reliability of the three IBIs by exploring the relationships between biological communities and water quality environments from multiple perspectives revealed that the three IBIs were spatially positively correlated with WQI, Pearson and linear regression (P < 0.01). The results of redundancy analysis between the three IBIs, their constituent metris and physicochemical factors indicate that physicochemical factors have varying importance in determining the scores of the three IBIs. However, the scores of the three IBIs were lower than that of the WQI (P < 0.01), and B-IBI scores were lower than those of P-IBI and Z-IBI (both P < 0.001). In conclusion, IBIs are effective for evaluating the health of river ecosystems and could be widely applied. IBIs show greater sensitivity than WQI for detecting environmental damage, and B-IBI was the most sensitive index.

Abstract:In order to provide scientific supports for watershed sustainable development,operation and management, Nanxi River was selected as a typical red-soil region,and ecosystem health assessment methodology and pressure analysis combining remote sensing(RS),geographic information system(GIS)and multi-index were applied.The ecosystem health assessment was classified into two categories:water area and terrestrial area,and the indices were divided into six sections including habitat structure,aquatic organisms,ecological pressure of water area and ecological patterns,ecological function,ecological pressure of terrestrial area,which consisted of 16 sub-indicators.The results showed that the health condition of the study area was good,and only the aquatic organisms and ecological function were in ordinary condition.Among them,83.3% of sub-basins were in good condition,while the others were in ordinary condition,and all of them were located in the downstream areas.Human disturbance was the major reason of the degradation of watershed ecosystem health,such as rapid growth of urban land areas,excessive livestock breeding and fishing. In order to improve the health conditions, more attention should be paid to adjusting the scope of the conservation areas,controlling pollution from point and nonpoint sources as well as protecting the biodiversity.The proposed assessment methodology can comprehensively indicate the health condition of Nanxi River.This case study could make a contribution to guiding the watershed management in ecologically fragile areas,and ensuring the water ecological health of the basin and its downriver.
Linking Land Use Metrics Measured In Aquatic-Terrestrial Interfaces To Water Quality Of Reservoir-Based Water Sources In Eastern China

Abstract:The effects of anthropogenic land use on the water quality of reservoir-based water sources are understudied. We trained a self-organizing map (SOM) to measure the spatial pattern of nutrients over the course of a year in 61 reservoirs located in eastern China. In the linear regression model and one-way analyses of variance, we found that water quality was influenced by period of the year (flood, low, and normal periods based on rainfall conditions) and reservoir altitude (plains vs. mountains). Our results indicated that land use metrics measured in aquatic-terrestrial interfaces significantly influenced the water quality of reservoirs. The land use intensity (LUI) and the proportion of construction land had a positive correlation with ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N) and chemical oxygen demand (CODMn) concentrations, and redundancy analysis indicated that the percent of landscape (PLAND) represented by construction land was positively correlated with CODMn, NH3-N, total phosphorus (TP), and total nitrogen (TN) concentrations. The proportion of cropland was not correlated with any water quality property except for CODMn concentration. The total explained variance for water quality was highest when the scale was large (the area defined by a 1500 m radius around the reservoir), indicating that management which ensures water safety should be carried out at this scale.
An integrated approach for assessing aquatic ecological carrying capacity: a case study of Wujin District in the Tai Lake Basin, China

Abstract:Aquatic ecological carrying capacity is an effective method for analyzing sustainable development in regional water management. In this paper, an integrated approach is employed for assessing the aquatic ecological carrying capacity of Wujin District in the Tai Lake Basin, China. An indicator system is established considering social and economic development as well as ecological resilience perspectives. While calculating the ecological index, the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) is extracted from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) time-series images, followed by spatial and temporal analysis of vegetation cover. Finally, multi-index assessment of aquatic ecological carrying capacity is carried out for the period 2000 to 2008, including both static and dynamic variables. The results reveal that aquatic ecological carrying capacity presents a slight upward trend in the past decade and the intensity of human activities still exceeded the aquatic ecological carrying capacity in 2008. In terms of human activities, population has decreased, GDP has quadrupled, and fertilizer application and industrial wastewater discharge have declined greatly in the past decade. The indicators representing aquatic ecosystem conditions have the lowest scores, which are primarily attributed to the water eutrophication problem. Yet the terrestrial ecosystem is assessed to be in better condition since topographic backgrounds and landscape diversity are at higher levels. Based on the work carried out, it is suggested that pollutant emission be controlled to improve water quality and agricultural development around Ge Lake (the largest lake in Wujin District) be reduced.
Development and testing of a planktonic index of biotic integrity (P-IBI) for Lake Fuxian, China

Abstract:Lake Fuxian has the largest reserves of high-quality water resources in China, and understanding its ecological health status is the basis of its environmental protection. Based on a seasonal field investigation of the plankton community, we established a planktonic index of biotic integrity (P-IBI) evaluation system to assess the lake's ecosystem health. The biological integrity of Lake Fuxian was relatively good during winter and spring, but gradually deteriorated from summer to autumn. Areas with poor biological integrity were mainly distributed near tourist attractions along the lake's west coast. Redundancy analysis (RDA) was performed to explore the relationships between the P-IBI, its selected indicators, and the environmental variables. Water temperature (WT), pH, ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N), and dissolved oxygen (DO) significantly influenced the P-IBI and its selected indicators. NH3-N and DO were significantly positively correlated with the P-IBI, indicating that it could be used as a water quality indicator to indirectly reflect lake biological integrity. We demonstrated that the P-IBI can effectively reflect temporal and spatial variations of biological integrity and could be used as a potential tool to evaluate Lake Fuxian ecosystem health.
Assessment of Chemical Integrity Based on Ecological Thresholds in One of the Largest Basins in China

Abstract:Chemical integrity plays a crucial role in maintaining the ecological integrity of aquatic ecosystems. Despite its significance, assessments of ecological integrity often prioritize biological evaluations, leading to infrequent and inadequate scrutiny of chemical integrity. Additionally, a comprehensive framework for separately assessing chemical integrity has not been established. To address this issue, we established a new index for evaluating chemical integrity, achieved through indicator screening, normalization, and weight assignment. Combined with the threshold indicator taxa analysis (TITAN) and Pearson correlation analysis, main evaluation indicators and their indicator species were identified and the corresponding response threshold was determined. These thresholds were then applied to improve the normalization method, with weights determined by indicator species proportions. This index was applied to evaluate the chemical integrity of the Huai River Basin, which is one of the largest basins in China. The results indicated that ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N), nitrate nitrogen (NO2-N), pH, and turbidity (Turb) were identified as the core parameters for evaluating chemical integrity. The conventional normalization method (max–min normalization) led to overestimation of the assessment results, whereas improved normalization method based on ecological threshold yielded better and more reasonable results. This study provided a reference for the selection of appropriate indicators and improvement of normalization method to better assess chemical integrity. And it would become a useful tool for monitoring and rehabilitating the chemical integrity in such basins.

Abstract:Index of biotic integrity (IBI) based on fish has been applied globally. However, few have considered that fish assemblages change among different aggregate ecoregions when conducted their health assessment. Indeed, some comprehensive indices, such as functional and phylogenetic diversity indices and ABC curve, can be used to identify aspects that are not captured by traditional metrics. Consequently, we try to integrate comprehensive indices and spatial patterns of fish assemblages to develop IBI systems and then verified their effectiveness and accuracy for assessing the environmental health of the Chishui River basin. The comprehensive disturbance index (CDI), based on 11 water quality parameters and 4 human land use, was set to distinguish reference sites and impaired sites. According to the spatial patterns of fish assemblages, the 40 sites were finally divided into 2 aggregate ecoregions, include wadeable streams and nonwadeable rivers. 97 candidate metrics were selected to develop our IBI systems based on the systematic screening method. The result also showed that our IBI systems performed well in discriminating anthropogenic disturbances at both aggregate ecoregions, which suggests that our systems could provide a reliable evaluation. The mean IBI score of the Chishui River basin was 72.09 ± 16.58, and was classified as good status. However, S1 (Chishuiyuan Town), Baisha River, Tongzi River, and Xishui River were disturbed by various human activities. We conclude that the spatial patterns of fish assemblages should be combined with more comprehensive indices to assess river health. On the other hand, we do believe that the process of developing and verifying our IBI systems could be regarded as a reference for biomonitoring in more mountain river systems.

Abstract:Surface water pollution has always posed a serious challenge to water quality management . Improving water quality management requires figuring out how to comprehend water quality conditions scientifically and effectively as well as quantitatively identify regional pollution sources. In this study, Xianghai Lake, a typical lake-type wetland on the Northeast China Plain, was taken as the research area. Based on a geographic information system (GIS) method and 11 water quality parameters, the single-factor evaluation and comprehensive water quality index (WQI) methods were used to comprehensively evaluate the water quality of the lake-type wetland in the level period. Four key water quality parameters were determined by the principal component analysis (PCA) method, and more convenient comprehensive water quality evaluation models, the minimum WQI considering weights (WQI min-w ) and the minimum WQI without considering weights (WQI min-nw ) were established. The multiple statistical method and the absolute principal component score-multiple liner regression (APCS-MLR) model were combined to analyse the lake pollution sources based on the spatial changes in pollutants. The findings demonstrated that the WQI min-nw model's water quality evaluation outcome was more accurate when weights were not taken into account. The WQI min-nw model can be used as a simple and convenient way to comprehend the variations in water quality in wetlands of lakes and reservoirs. It was concluded that the comprehensive water quality in the study area was at a "medium" level, and COD Mn was the main limiting factor. Nonpoint source pollution (such as agricultural planting and livestock breeding) was the most important factor affecting the water quality of Xianghai Lake (with a comprehensive contribution rate of 31.65%). The comprehensive contribution rates of sediment endogenous and geological sources, phytoplankton and other plants, and water diversion and other hydrodynamic impacts accounted for 25.12%, 19.65%, and 23.58% of the total impact, respectively. This study can provide a scientific method for water quality assessment and management of lake wetlands, and an effective support for migration of migratory birds, habitat protection and grain production security.

Abstract:LMB-7 [B3(Fv)-PE38] is a single-chain immunotoxin constructed from the murine monoclonal antibody B3 and a truncated from of Pseudomonas exotoxin PE38. Antibody B3 recognizes a carbohydrate epitope found on solid tumors that frequently invade the intrathecal space and cause neoplastic meningitis. We tested the therapeutic value of intrathecally administered LMB-7 by using a model of human neoplastic meningitis in athymic rats. This model is representative of a clinical situation in that antibody B3 cross-reacts with a number of normal tissues that can be used to monitor potential systemic toxicity. Treatment was begun 3 days after A431 tumor implantation. Without treatment, the animals median survival was 10 days. Intrathecal administration of 10 micrograms of LMB-7 in 40 microliters on days 3, 5, and 7 produced 4 of 10 and 8 of 10 long-term survivors (> 170 days) in two experiments. Of the long-term survivors, 2 of 4 and 7 of 8 survivors had no microscopic evidence of tumor and were considered histologic cures. Lack of significant toxicity in the effective dose range and specificity make LMB-7 an excellent candidate for intrathecal treatment of neoplastic meningitis in humans.
Assessment of River Habitat Quality in Yixing District of Taihu Lake Basin

Abstract:In this paper, an assessment system including ten indices of river habitat quality for three different habitats (channel, bank, and riparian habitats) was established to assess the habitat quality and compare its spatial difference at 42 sites of Yixing district in Taihu Lake basin, and analyzed the differences of the river habitat parameters under different land use types as well as the correlation between river habitat quality index and eutrophication. The scores of the river habitat quality index at the study sites ranged from 29 to 79. 31.0% of the sites had a poor or very poor habitat quality, and 57.1% had a fair habitat quality, indicating the obvious habitat degradation in the whole district. The river habitat quality was better in southern hilly area than in vast plain river area. There existed significant differences in the river habitat quality under different land use types, being much better in woodland than in farmland and construction land. The river habitat quality index had significant negative correlation with eutrophication, suggesting the considerable contribution of water quality to river habitat quality.

Abstract:Indices of biotic integrity (IBIs) are widely used to assess aquatic ecosystem health. However, there are few studies on their relationships. Based on fish, macroinvertebrate and plankton survey data collected in the Ganjiang River system from 2016 to 2017, redundancy analysis (RDA) and canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) were used to analyze how the community structures of these organisms respond to environmental variables. The fish IBI (F-IBI), benthic macroinvertebrate IBI (B-IBI), and phytoplankton IBI (P-IBI) were applied to evaluate the health status of the aquatic ecosystem. A Kruskal–Wallis test (p < 0.05) and Spearman’s correlation coefficient analysis were performed to evaluate the spatiotemporal heterogeneity of the results. Our results suggested that the F-IBI-, B-IBI-, and P-IBI-based assessments indicated good, fair, and healthy Ganjiang River system ecosystem health statuses, respectively, and significant differences existed among these indices (p < 0.05). The main environmental factors affecting F-IBI, B-IBI, and P-IBI were different. At the temporal scale, the F-IBI and B-IBI were stable, while the P-IBI fluctuated obviously. The consistency between the F-IBI and B-IBI results was better than that between each of these indices and the P-IBI results, and the consistency was better on a larger scale. These research results show that comprehensive assessments based on multiple groups rather than a single group can better characterize the impacts of environmental pressures on water ecosystems.

Abstract:Wetland,a unique ecosystem on Earth,is the most import ecological environment for the survival of human beings.The wetland eco-health assessment provides a decision-making basis for ecosystem health diagnosis and ecological restoration.Fully considering the basic status of Shijiu lake wetland,the 24 indices were selected to assess the health of the wetland ecosystem from the ecological character,unitary function and the society-economy environment of the wetland in this paper.The weight for each index was calculated by referring to the opinion of experts.By the model of fuzzy comprehensive evaluation and the model of log-linear,the status of wetland ecosystem health in Shijiu Lake was analyzed respectively and the two models were compared.Finally,the renewal measures of Shijiu lake wetland were put forward according to the evaluation results.

Abstract:Based on a river water environmental restoration project in a downtown area of the Taihu Lake Basin, this study continuously monitored the changes of water quality for two years using five indicators (shore and riparian plants, phytoplankton, amphibians, fish, and microorganisms). The variation characteristics of biological indicators were analysed over the urban water body restoration process. According to the results of water quality analysis, the water quality significantly improved during the restoration of the water environment (from inferior class V to V). With the improved water quality, the diversity of plants and amphibians changed little, which were characterized by single species and small quantities, without showing regular changes. The diversity of fish in 2015 increased significantly compared to that of 2014, and correlated significantly negatively with the concentration of water pollutants. Carps showed a stronger enrichment ability for Mn and Pb. Microbial count, gamma-proteobacteria, and proteobacteria collectively served as a definitive indicator of the degree of heavy pollution in water bodies. Indicators of the ecological impact assessment in the urban water body restoration process screened in this study can be used as indicative reference indicators for the restoration status of urban water ecosystems.
Water quality assessment using optimized CWQII in Taihu Lake

Abstract:To improve the rationality of weight allocation and weight proportion of different periods in the process of water quality assessment, the comprehensive water quality identification index (CWQII) model was optimized in this study. A new improved comprehensive water quality identification index (ICWQIIG) model based on game theory was established to combine subjective weight and objective weight. Based on ICWQIIG, an improved comprehensive water quality identification index (ICWQIIP) model with phased period combination weights was established to determine determined the weight proportion of phased periods was established. In this study, CWQII, ICWQIIG, and ICWQIIP were used to evaluate the water quality of seventeen sites in Taihu Lake in 2020. The models selected nine water quality parameters and six water quality indicators. The assessment results of water quality classification were between “slightly polluted” and “moderately polluted”. The pollution level on the east bank was lower than that on the west bank and north bank. Furthermore, it was also affected by seasonal change, water quality was worse in January and February but better in October and November. The mean value of Iwq calculated by CWQII, ICWQIIG, and ICWQIIP were 2.405, 2.833, and 3.000, respectively. The compared results showed that the ICWQIIG method can more representative identify the location of polluted water than CWQII. Moreover, the ICWQIIP method calculation results not only retained the representative polluted water samples in the ICWQIIG method but can also identify more pollution sites and worse polluted water bodies. Both ICWQIIG and ICWQIIP had high reliability and accuracy in assessment results, and ICWQIIP was more accurate under sufficient data conditions. This study can offer a scientific basis for local water resource management in Taihu Lake, while simultaneously proposing a science-based and valid methodology for the assessment of other similar water bodies.

Abstract:Ecosystem health assessment is one of the hot issues in current environmental science and ecological research,and wetland’s ecosystem health assessment is an important development direction.The assessment takes the northern wetland of the Qinghai-lake as an example,from the conception of the ecosystem health to establish index system which includes 3 elements: wetland organization structure,the whole function and the exterior environment. It has 15 indexes totally. Drawing on medical theories into the ecosystem level,5 class evaluation grades and scoring range are established. It uses entropy weight method and AHP method to determine the index weight. Then calculate the ecosystem health indicators in the past 10 years. To analysis the ecosystem health trend of the northern wetland. Results show that the ecosystem health of northern wetlands in the rising status in recent 10 years.It also provides reference for the study of ecological functions and ecological compensation based on the ecosystem health of the trend analysis. Finally,the research provides decision-making basis for the river basin planning,management,protection and comprehensive management

Abstract:Healthy ecosystem is an indispensable condition for human survival and development.The ecosystem health of the Three Gorges Reservoir Area(Chongqing Section) was analyzed.Based on the 3S technique,a three-grade indicator system model based on Pressure-State-Response mode was constructed,and the methods of AHP and Delphi were used and 10 indices,including population density and geological disaster frequency,etc.,chosen to evaluate the Ecosystem Health Composite Index(ESHCI) in the area.The results show that: ① The method of GIS spatial analysis can be used for the analysis of the ecosystem health and can get a reliable result;② In Chongqing Section,areas with degrading ecosystem health cover 82.6% of the total area,which may be attributed to the human activities;③The distribution of the ESHCI shows an obvious area difference.Distributed by the political region,the Pengshui County and Wushan County are the mostly healthy ones,the Wuxi County and Wulong County are less healthy,and the Yunyang City and Wanzhou are the worst in health.The reason of the distribution was found out by hierarchical cluster analysis.Moreover,the comprehensive countermeasures in a macro-scale were proposed to actively prevent and effectively control the bad ecological results caused by human activities.
