Abstract:Dryolestoids are an extinct mammalian group belonging to the lineage leading to modern marsupials and placentals. Dryolestoids are known by teeth and jaws from the Jurassic period of North America and Europe, but they thrived in South America up to the end of the Mesozoic era and survived to the beginnings of the Cenozoic. Isolated teeth and jaws from the latest Cretaceous of South America provide mounting evidence that, at least in western Gondwana, dryolestoids developed into strongly endemic groups by the Late Cretaceous. However, the lack of pre-Late Cretaceous dryolestoid remains made study of their origin and early diversification intractable. Here we describe the first mammalian remains from the early Late Cretaceous of South America, including two partial skulls and jaws of a derived dryolestoid showing dental and cranial features unknown among any other group of Mesozoic mammals, such as single-rooted molars preceded by double-rooted premolars, combined with a very long muzzle, exceedingly long canines and evidence of highly specialized masticatory musculature. On one hand, the new mammal shares derived features of dryolestoids with forms from the Jurassic of Laurasia, whereas on the other hand, it is very specialized and highlights the endemic, diverse dryolestoid fauna from the Cretaceous of South America. Our specimens include only the second mammalian skull known for the Cretaceous of Gondwana, bridging a previous 60-million-year gap in the fossil record, and document the whole cranial morphology of a dryolestoid, revealing an unsuspected morphological and ecological diversity for non-tribosphenic mammals.
Formulation and resolution of inverse problems for nonlinear, transient structural dynamics

Abstract:ABSTRACT A general framework is proposed for validating numerical models for nonlinear, transient dynamics. Previous work has focused on nonlinear vibration and several difficulties of formulating and solving inverse problems for nonlinear dynamics have been identified. Among them, we cite the necessity to satisfy continuity of the response when several finite element optimizations are successively carried out and the need to propagate variability throughout the optimization of the model's parameters. Our approach is illustrated using data from a nonlinear vibration testbed and an impact test experiment both conducted at Los Alamos National Laboratory in support of the advanced strategic computing initiative and our code validation and verification program.

Abstract:Encompassing global cooling, the spread of grasslands, and biogeographic interchanges, the Hemphillian North American Land Mammal Age is an important interval for understanding the factors driving ecological and evolutionary change through time. McKay Reservoir near Pendleton, Oregon is a natural laboratory for analyses of these factors. It is remarkable for its small vertebrate fauna including rodents, bats, turtles, and lagomorphs, but also for its larger mammal fossils like camelids, rhinocerotids, canids, and felids. Despite the importance of the site, few revisions to its faunal list have been published since its original description. We expand on this description by identifying taxa not previously known from McKay Reservoir based on specimens collected during fieldwork and through reidentification of previously collected fossils. Newly identified taxa include the borophagine canid Borophagus secundus (Matthew and Cook, 1909), the camelids Megatylopus Matthew and Cook, 1909 and Pleiolama Webb and Meachen, 2004, a dromomerycid, and the equids Cormohipparion Skinner and MacFadden, 1977 and Pseudhipparion Ameghino, 1904. Specimens previously assigned to Neohipparion Gidley, 1903 and Hipparion de Christol, 1832 lack the features necessary to diagnose these genera, which are therefore removed from the site's faunal list. The presence of Borophagus secundus, Cormohipparion, and Pseudhipparion is especially important, because each occurrence represents a major geographic range extension. This refined understanding of the fauna lays the foundation for future studies of taphonomy, taxonomy, functional morphology, and paleoecology—potentially at the population, community, or ecosystem levels—at this paleobiologically significant Miocene locality.

Giants beasts updated: A review of new knowledge about the South American megafauna

Abstract:Since the publication of Megafauna: Giant Beasts of Pleistocene South America by Fariña et al. in 2013, much has been published on this fascinating subject. Here, we sum up those contributions according to their aim: taxonomic, geographical and phylogenetic novelty, new approaches to the natural history of those species, and extinction and its aftermath. The traditional centres of interest since the 19th century, especially the Río de la Plata region, have now been complemented as a source of information by many other regions in South America, and the remains are now being studied by biogeochemistry and molecular biology, as well as with finite element analysis and constantly refined statistics. Finally, scholars and the public are becoming more interested in the demise of the megamammals as the starting point of the current process of biodiversity loss.

Abstract:The Great American Biotic Interchange is considered to be a punctuated process, primarily occurring during four major pulses that began approximately 2.5 Ma. Central America and southeastern Mexico have a poor fossil record of this dynamic faunal history due to tropical climates. Exploration of submerged caves in the Yucatán, particularly the natural trap Hoyo Negro, is exposing a rich and remarkably well-preserved late Pleistocene fauna. Radiometric dates on megafauna range from approximately 38 400–12 850 cal BP, and extinct species include the ursid Arctotherium wingei and canid Protocyon troglodytes . Both genera were previously thought to be indigenous to and confined to South America and appear to represent an instance of large placental mammals, descended from North American progenitors, migrating back north across the Panama Isthmus. This discovery expands the distribution of these carnivorans greater than 2000 km outside South America. Their presence along with a diverse sloth assemblage suggests a more complex history of these organisms in Middle America. We suggest that landscape and ecological changes caused by latest Pleistocene glaciation supported an interchange pulse that included A. wingei , P. troglodytes and Homo sapiens .

Abstract:Salinas Grandes de Hidalgo (La Pampa Province) is a relevant locality of the Cerro Azul Formation in central Argentina because of its abundant and diverse vertebrate remains, including representatives of Reptilia, Aves and mostly Mammalia. Concerning previous records, the present faunal list adds one Argyrolagidae marsupial, one Ctenomyidae and two Caviidae rodents, as well as the first detailed analysis and description of glyptodonts from the Cerro Azul Formation in La Pampa Province. New geological information is added about the two fossiliferous outcrops included in Salinas Grandes de Hidalgo area. The classically studied outcrop located in the saline lake and the nearby one in the so-called ex-Autódromo, both herein correlated based on lithostratigraphy, particularly by the presence of paleosols in the intermediate section of the sedimentary succession. These sandy silts deposits in the base of the outcrops indicate the development of poorly confined flows and intervals of surface stabilisation by paedogenesis. We offer a biochronological interpretation based on a recently published U-Pb detrital zircons dating (5.9 ± 0.4 Ma) and the presence of significant taxa such as octodontoid rodents recovered from the dated levels and below it. From a paleoenvironmental viewpoint, we infer variations from woodlands to open environments.

Abstract:Here we present a comparative anatomical study of large late Miocene alligatorids of Argentina (Ituzaingó Formation), in which we analyse their taxonomy, morphological disparity, and phylogenetic relationships. ' Caiman lutescens ' and Caiman gasparinae are two giant Miocene Argentinean caimanines that are assigned to the genus Caiman. ' Caiman lutescens ' was originally described based on the large size of several isolated cranial and postcranial elements. In this study we consider that the lectotype of ' C. lutescens ', an articulated left premaxilla and maxilla (MACN-Pv 5416), is morphologically indistinguishable from rostral morphotypes present in other jacarean caimanines, like Caiman latirostris and Caiman wannlangstoni , and therefore ' C. lutescens ' is here considered a nomen dubium while MACN-Pv 5416 is an indeterminate Jacarea. A partial skull table, MACN-Pv 13551, was originally and historically referred to ' C. lutescens ', and even wrongly considered its holotype, but it is here redescribed and reinterpreted as the holotype of a new genus and species. Additionally, after the comparative anatomical study of the holotype of C. gasparinae ( MLP-Pv 73-IV-15-1), we conclude that it shows a distinctive combination of skull morphological features that allows it to be distinguished from other caimanines, including extant Caiman species. This situation and the results of the phylogenetic analyses lead us to erect a new genus for this species, which results in a new nomenclatorial combination. These new results support the idea that the alligatorid assemblages of the South American late Miocene wetlands were highly diverse at high latitudes ( c . 30–35°S), as evidenced by the taxonomic diversity and morphological disparity present in the crocodylian assemblage of the Ituzaingó Formation in Paraná. Abstract:The fossil mammalian assemblage of the Itaboraí Basin, located in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, was recovered from fissure fill deposits that vertically cut its limestone beds. Previous studies have considered the abundant and diversified fossil mammals excavated from such deposits of this small basin to have been deposited synchronously. An analysis comparing the whole Itaboraí mammalian assemblage with that of the Las Flores Formation, Argentina, estimated its age as early Eocene. The purpose of this study is to test the hypothesis of an asynchronous formation and infilling of the fissures and to conduct faunistic comparisons with other South American local faunas, considering the mammals of each Itaboraí fissure (MN, MCT-1 and MCT-2) separately, as these fissures were formed in distinct areas of the basin and in different topographic levels. To evaluate the faunal similarities between the Itaboraí fissures and other South American local faunas, cluster analysis and parsimony analysis of endemicity were undertaken. Both methods nest all three Itaboraí fissures with the Yacimiento Las Flores fauna, but some analysis show two fissures (MN and MCT-1) to be closer to it than the third. Based on the topographic levels of the fissures, their fossil mammals (diversity, presence/absence, and abundance), marsupial trophic structure and evolutionary stage, we conclude that the Itaboraí mammal assemblage is composed of faunas of different ages/stages: the fauna of the fissure discovered in 1968 (MCT-2) is the oldest (probably late Paleocene to earliest Eocene), and the fissure discovered in 1949 (MCT-1) is the youngest (early Eocene).

Abstract:Cingulata (Early Eocene-Recent) is a very well-diversified clade that reached a high diversity during the early Neogene. In southern South America, there is an evident imbalance in our knowledge of the Neogene diversity along the Northwestern region of Argentina (NWA) compared to the Pampean region (PR), despite the importance of NWA to understanding the hypothetical evolutionary scenarios of several clades. The Palo Pintado Formation ( ca . 10–5 Ma) is one of the richest units in NWA, involving both the global warming of the Tortonian ( ca . 11.6–7.25 Ma) and the global cooling event of the Messinian ( ca . 7.25–5.33), coeval with the widespread of the C4 plants. Despite this, Cingulata from this Formation are still poorly known. Interdisciplinary fieldwork at Calchaqui Valley (Angastaco Basin) yielded several new remains, including Chlamyphoridae Euphractinae Proeuphractus limpidus , Chorobates villossisimus and Prozaedyus sp.; Dasypodidae Dasypus sp.; Pampatheriidae Kraglievichia paranensis ; and Glyptodontidae Cranithlastus xibiensis . The "armadillos" P. limpidus , Prozaedyus sp., and Dasypus sp. increase the previously known diversity. The record of Dasypus sp. reinforces recent hypotheses extending the biochron of the genus to the Late Miocene in NWA. The recognized taxonomic diversity of glyptodonts, limited to one species, contrasts with that known from other coeval formations placed both in the south (Andalhuala and Corral Quemado formations, Catamarca Province) and the north (Maimará and Tafna formations, Jujuy Province), revealing a complex biogeographic scenario for this clade during this period. The analyzed deposits are interpreted as accumulated within the channel and formed during episodes of large discharges of water and sediment mostly under a warm subtropical climate, tough there is an aridization recorded at ca . 6 Ma, which is probably related to the increase in the taxonomic diversification of Cingulata along the stratigraphic sequence.

Carbenoxolone maintenance in cimetidine-healed patients.

Abstract:The effects of 3 months' maintenance treatments with cimetidine, 400 mg at bedtime, or with carbenoxolone, 150 mg/daily, in patients whose duodenal ulcers healed after an initial course with cimetidine were compared. Carbenoxolone promoted a significant enhancement of cimetidine-altered mucus secretion, whereas in the cimetidine group no mucus recovery was found. Within 6 months from healing time 48.1% of the patients in the cimetidine group relapsed, compared with 21.4% in the carbenoxolone group. The difference is statistically significant (p < 0.05). Our results suggest that carbenoxolone maintenance is more effective than cimetidine in preventing recurrence of ulcers, being also a cheaper and shorter maintenance treatment.
A New Species of Docodon (Mammaliaformes: Docodonta) from the Upper Jurassic Morrison Formation and a Reassessment of Selected Craniodental Characters in Basal Mammaliaforms

Abstract:We describe a new species of the basal mammaliaform Docodon, D. apoxys, sp. nov., represented by three nearly complete dentaries from the Upper Jurassic Morrison Formation of central Colorado. This species differs from other known species of Docodon in the relative heights of the principal molar cusps and in the size of the distal molars. In addition, we attribute a partial rostrum preserving much of the maxilla and most of the premaxilla, bearing a complete incisor and premolar count, to Docodon sp. These materials supply previously unknown morphology for this classic North American Jurassic taxon, and help establish a common morphology for Docodonta as a whole. While Docodon differs from the Portuguese docodont Haldanodon in the presence of only five upper incisors (none of which is entirely within the maxilla), an internarial bar is present in both taxa. The new specimens also unambiguously preserve a complete and undistorted angular process that differs conspicuously from the classical interpretation of the holotype of Docodon victor; this structure in docodonts closely resembles the angular process in australosphenidans and trechnotheres. We abandon the concept of a “pseudangular” process and we consider the angular process to be a homologous feature (where present) across Mammaliaformes.

Abstract:The nasal cavity of living mammals is a unique structural complex among tetrapods, acquired along a series of major morphological transformations that occurred mainly during the Mesozoic Era, within the Synapsida clade. Particularly, non-mammaliaform cynodonts document several morphological changes in the skull, during the Triassic Period, that represent the first steps of the mammalian bauplan. We here explore the nasal cavity of five cynodont taxa, namely Thrinaxodon , Chiniquodon , Prozostrodon , Riograndia , and Brasilodon , in order to discuss the main changes within this skull region. We did not identify ossified turbinals in the nasal cavity of these taxa and if present, as non-ossified structures, they would not necessarily be associated with temperature control or the development of endothermy. We do, however, notice a complexification of the cartilage anchoring structures that divide the nasal cavity and separate it from the brain region in these forerunners of mammals.

Abstract:The Holocene, Ahead of Print. This special volume considers major recent changes in southern South American animal communities. Eleven papers consider megafauna, pinnipeds, marine mammals, small terrestrial mammals and birds and are grouped under four sub-headings: (1) Isotopic insights into guanaco populations; (2) Historical sources and marine ecosystem change; (3) Changes in small mammal communities and human impacts; and (4) megafaunal extinction, domestication, avifauna and recent interactions with humans. Although some of these contributions include changes that occurred earlier in the Holocene, many highlight a current decrease in the taxonomic diversity of communities and ecosystems in different environments, which are likely to have been caused by modern human activities. The Anthropocene concept is seen as providing a useful framework for understanding and mitigation of such adverse human impacts.

New fossil Bovidae (Mammalia: Artiodactyla) from Kromdraai Unit P, South Africa and their implication for biochronology and hominin palaeoecology

Abstract:Kromdraai is a Plio-Pleistocene site located in the Cradle of Humankind (Gauteng Province, South Africa). It has produced diverse and abundant faunal assemblages and key hominin specimens like the holotype of Paranthropus robustus and early Homo . We provide the first taxonomic study of the Bovidae Family from the hominin-bearing Unit P at Kromdraai and discuss its potential to unravel its paleoecological context. We describe the presence of an unknown medium-sized buffalo ( Syncerus sp.) that could be closely related to S. acoelotus . The bovid assemblage from Kromdraai Unit P combines older Plio-Pleistocene ( Gazella gracilior , Makapania broomi, Numidocapra cf. porrocornutus ) and younger Pleistocene taxa ( Tragelaphus strepsiceros , Oreotragus oreotragus , Raphicerus campestris , Damaliscus lunatus ). Overall, these bovid species indicate a grassland-dominated environment for Unit P. Comparisons with other Plio-Pleistocene South African sites indicate that Australopithecus was associated with woodland and closed-wet environment-adapted taxa, whereas Homo was found in association with bovid species adapted to open and dry environments. In contrast, the assemblages associated with Paranthropus show an extensive range of environmental adaptation among the bovids. The biochronology indicates that Kromdraai Unit P accumulated between 2.9 and 1.8 Ma. If Kromdraai Unit P were to be confirmed to date to the older end of this scale, it would provide the earliest appearance of Paranthropus robustus , Numidocapra , and Damaliscus in southern Africa.

Abstract:Pliocene and Pleistocene sedimentary successions in the Pampean region of Argentina contain abundant and diverse fossil mammalian burrows. In this paper, we report fossil burrows from eight localities from near Miramar to the northern area of Mar del Plata, spanning the Early Pliocene to the Late Pleistocene, and analyze burrow size patterns. The minimum width of each fossil burrow was measured as an indicator of its diameter. Available allometric equations for extant burrowing vertebrates were used to estimate the body size of potential producers based on burrow diameter. Size distribution patterns indicate that, in the Early Pliocene to Early Pleistocene levels, small burrows (attributed to rodents, typotheres, and small armadillos) were abundant, while medium- to large-sized burrows (attributed to large cingulates) were less common. In the Middle to Late Pleistocene levels, small burrows are very scarce, and medium-sized burrows are most abundant, together with giant burrows (attributed to ground sloths). Our findings indicate a significant size diversity for Pliocene–Pleistocene burrowing mammals in the studied area, from small rodents to giant ground sloths. Although present in Pliocene to Early Pleistocene times, the largest ground sloths began to build subterranean galleries only later in the Middle to Late Pleistocene. Small burrowers were comparatively less active during that time. These patterns are discussed in the light of paleoclimate and paleoecology of the putative guild of extinct burrowers, to develop working hypotheses for future studies. A paleoclimatic shift from Pliocene Climate Optimum to more arid and colder conditions from the Late Pliocene to Late Pleistocene, and the incursion of large predators to the region, are proposed as major factors promoting large ground sloths to adopt a fossorial lifestyle.

Abstract:The integral study of micromammals recovered from archaeological contexts provides a number of contributions to the understanding of the dynamics of human occupation. In this paper, based on a comprehensive study of Holocene and actualistic samples from central Argentina, we discuss the taphonomic and paleoenvironmental implications in sites with hunter-gatherer occupations. The sequence studied (ca. 1500–4500 BP) indicates the presence of natural predators (i.e. nocturnal and diurnal birds of prey) as responsible for the formation of the assemblage, ruling out, so far, the participation of human groups. On the other hand, the taxonomic composition of the preterite and actualistic assemblages shows a process of advancement of shrubland and forest environments at the expense of the decrease of open environments, grassland and fresh water contexts.

Abstract:Dorn-Dürkheim 1 has yielded one of the most diverse fossil mammal faunas of Europe, comprising at least 80 species. It fills a gap in the fossil record of the terrestrial late Miocene concerning not only phylogeny but also the environmental development at a decisive moment, just after the Vallesian/Turolian turnover. The article also discusses palaeobiogeographic aspects and biochronology and presents an updated list of the mammal fauna.

Abstract:Mammalian lineage is deep rooted in Mesozoic, with several taxa and ichnotaxa described worldwide. One of the most prolific mammaliaform ichnospecies is Brasilichnium elusivum, which is extremely abundant in the Lower Cretaceous Botucatu Formation of the Brazilian Paraná Basin, as well as in other Mesozoic ichnofaunas of North America and Africa. In this contribution, we revisited the proposed southernmost occurrence of B. elusivum using both classical and photogrammetric (3D digitization) approaches. The flagstone containing the studied material was found ex situ, in a sidewalk at Santa Cruz do Sul Municipality (the Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil), and the results of the performed analysis showed that the tracks cannot be assigned to any ichnotaxon. Lastly, some significant issues related to ichnological research of ex situ track-bearing flagstones and large eolian deposits are discussed. Biogeography of theropod dinosaurs during the Late Cretaceous: evidence from central South America

Abstract:Abstract In central South America, theropod remains are relatively scarce in comparison to the southern part of the continent, with shed teeth being the primary fossils found in this region. We examined 179 isolated teeth from the Bauru Basin, Brazil, using linear discriminant analysis (LDA; N = 178) and phylogenetic analysis (N = 174). The LDA used eight measurements, and the phylogenetic analysis used seven morphotypes. Although the results of the LDA suggest the presence of various South American theropod clades, such as Carcharodontosauridae, Noasauridae, and Spinosauridae, the phylogenetic analysis using a constrained dentition-based matrix classified the morphotypes as Abelisauridae (morphotypes I–IV, VI, and VII) and Therizinosauria (morphotype V). Given the considerable number of homoplastic characters and missing data, the phylogenetic analyses could not precisely determine the taxonomy of morphotypes V, VI, and VII in the unconstrained dataset. Morphological comparisons, nevertheless, strongly suggest that all morphotypes should be classified as abelisaurid theropods. We propose that the palaeogeographical distribution of Abelisauridae in South America was influenced by climatic conditions. These apex carnivores are likely to have adapted well to increased climate changes that led to semi-arid conditions. Our research sheds light on the evolutionary and ecological aspects of theropod dinosaurs in this region, contributing to a better understanding of the ancient ecosystems of central South America.
