Abstract:This study aimed to analyze what university students in Indonesia like and dislike about the emergency remote learning process, which was implemented due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The case of Indonesia reveals what the majority of higher education in developing countries faced during the COVID-10 period. This research used a qualitative phenomenological approach. This study's participants were 80 social studies in education students at the Faculty of Education at a state university in Jakarta, Indonesia. The inquiry consisted of a thorough study of participants' diaries of day-to-day learning and reflective essays and an online focus group of discussions. The results revealed what students liked about learning from home during the COVID-19 crisis, which was grouped into three overarching themes of flexibility and efficiency, self-care and self-development, and learning new technology. Whereas, what students did not like was grouped into three main themes: lack of structure, technological difficulties, and financial barriers. By knowing what students like and dislike, we can try to reduce aspects that are not liked and may become obstacles to learning; and further improve the activities and features that students enjoy. As a result, the quality of remote learning in this pandemic could be enhanced, and students' ability to study in any circumstances could be increased.

Reliability of transthoracic echocardiography in the assessment of aortic valve morphology: pathological correlation in 178 patients.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To examine patient characteristics affecting the utility of transthoracic echocardiography in determining aortic valve morphology, particularly for the diagnosis of congenital bicuspid aortic valve (BAV). DESIGN A retrospective comparison of preoperative echocardiographic determination of aortic valve morphology with pathological findings of the explanted valves. SETTING A tertiary referral centre. PATIENTS Consecutive patients who had aortic valve replacement between July 1994 and April 1996, and had preoperative echocardiograms. RESULTS Of 313 patients, 181 (58%) had preoperative echocardiography. Three of the valves were excluded because they were too fragmented for pathological determination of valvular morphology. In the remaining 178 patients, aortic valvular morphology was determined by echocardiography in 104 (58%). Multivariate analysis showed that echocardiography was successful less often in women (odds ratio 0.44, P = 0.03) and in patients with densely calcified valves (odds ratio 0.69, P = 0.02), whereas age had no effect (odd ratio 0.99, P = 0.42). In those with adequate echocardiographic images, echocardiography had both a high sensitivity (0.92) and a high specificity (0.96) for the diagnosis of BAV. CONCLUSIONS Echocardiography is a useful tool for the diagnosis of BAV, although suboptimal images may pose a problem in many patients, particularly women and patients with heavily calcified valves. When adequate images are obtained, transthoracic echocardiography can reliably identify aortic valvular morphology in most patients.
Examining the Relationship Among Basic Psychological Needs Satisfaction, Self-Efficacy, and English Achievement of Vocational High School Students in Emergency Remote Teaching

Abstract:In the context of Emergency Remote Teaching (ERT), this study is conducted to investigate how learning from home impacts Vocational High School students and how their success in English is linked to their well-being, particularly their satisfaction with fundamental psychological needs. To ensure the robustness of the study, questionnaires assessing Basic Psychological Needs Satisfaction, Self-efficacy, and socio-economic factors underwent validation through AMOS software. Notable differences in achievement across eight majors were examined using a one-way ANOVA. The connections among socio-economic factors (such as gender, parental background, and gadget availability), Basic Psychological Needs Satisfaction, Self-efficacy, and students' achievement were delved into through Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The findings reveal that all student factors, with the exception of Self-efficacy, exerted a significant impact on achievement. It is noteworthy that Self-efficacy exhibited a negative impact, while the presence of gadget availability had the most pronounced positive effect. Interconnections among all these factors were also observed. In summary, the study highlights the influence of various factors, such as socio-economic background and psychological well-being, on the English achievement of Vocational High School students during ERT in Balikpapan, East Kalimantan, Indonesia. The encouragement of students to focus on their well-being, consideration of their family background, and ensuring access to gadgets are deemed critical for achieving better English scores. Future studies can delve deeper using qualitative data and different analysis methods. The inclusion of perspectives from teachers, principals, or parents, coupled with the utilization of standardized English tests, could provide a more comprehensive understanding.

Abstract:Due to COVID-19 outbreaks worldwide, the academic institutions have been enforced to entirely cancel face-to-face teaching including laboratories and other learning experiences as a mitigation step against the risk posed by the Coronavirus. Accordingly, various measures by the higher education providers have been initiated to implement social isolation strategies, and online teaching is followed with rapid curriculum transformation. The online delivery is more convenient, as it can provide vibrant and dynamic teaching and learning environment. However, due to time constraint, the curriculum transformation is anticipated to occur rapidly without sufficient preparation. Therefore, in this study, the concept of the emergency remote teaching (ERT) including its application and evaluation is thoroughly discussed. The application of the ERT in the Middle East College Oman has been considered as case study. This study draws on CIPP evaluation model to assess the effectiveness of the adopted model, and qualitative data were collected online taking random samples of students and educators. Besides, interview and questionnaire responses, experiences, beliefs, and challenges encountered by the educators and students on the emergency remote teaching were used and analyzed. In addition, students’ weekly attendance segregated with session modes, levels and module nature were considered to evaluate the students’ participation to the online classes. The collected information were analyzed, and based on the analysis outcomes, recommendations were forwarded to serve as an input for future strategies and policies and to improve the performance of teaching learning activities during similar circumstances.

Abstract:Regardless of its importance, pronunciation practice received a small portion in EFL teaching. This issue has attracted researchers to investigate how pronunciation practice is conducted in the EFL setting and what challenges are there. The results of the investigations have provided useful insights into what happens in the EFL classrooms. However, with the global pandemic outbreak that forced massive migration to emergency remote teaching (ERT), it remains unclear how pronunciation practice is carried out. This exploratory study attempts to shed light on the matter. It aims to portray the pronunciation practice during ERT and identify the challenges faced by the teachers. To limit the scope of the study, the researchers focused the investigation only on pronunciation accuracy. Data were collected through document analysis, non-participatory observation, questionnaire, and in-depth interview after gaining consent from two senior high schools English teachers in Indonesia. The collected data were then analyzed using the interactive model of analysis. This study reveals that during ERT, pronunciation practice received a small portion of attention, as earlier studies have found. The average time allocated is 10% of the total duration of learning. Most of the accuracy training was carried out with a similar pattern of activities, i.e., read aloud, listen-and-repeat, and teachers’ corrective feedback as the response of the student's errors. Presented in ERT, pronunciation accuracy training experienced several problems, and the most prominent is related to the internet connection. A poor internet connection can be disastrous for accuracy training as implementing synchronous learning or uploading and downloading audio/video requires a good and strong internet connection. Another problem is the lack of students’ engagement to study due to the difference in sensation and excitement with face-to-face learning. These imply that adequate preparation is needed in applying pronunciation accuracy instruction, apart from the material itself.

Abstract:There is no universal response for institutions in higher education on how to handle the continuity of education during the radical transformation all across the world during COVID-19. Online learning is often used as a synonym for emergency remote teaching, however, both methods have fundamentally different characteristics that differ in implementation and effectiveness. This study aims to investigate student perceptions concerning online learning and emergency remote teaching (ERT) during the global pandemic. An importance-performance analysis (IPA) was used to determine the perceived satisfaction of undergraduate students. This mixed-method study expands earlier research addressing concerns with ERT and adds to the body of knowledge by investigating how ERT is perceived by university students in Northeastern Thailand. Responses from a self-administered survey were collected and analyzed (n=287). Based on descriptive analysis, it was decided to conduct 14 unstructured interviews to investigate particular findings more thoroughly. The study identified that the students largely view ERT as inferior compared to traditional classroom teaching. Moreover, the students claimed both lack of social interactions with peers and inability to seek academic support as the primary reasons. This study informs educators about student perceptions and preferences during these extraordinary circumstances of uncertain duration.

Abstract:During the early pandemic, teachers and students were abruptly forced to conduct teaching and learning remotely. Both were struggling to cope with the challenges in the emergency remote teaching (ERT) situation. It was quite common to hear students and teachers wishing to go back to school immediately for various reasons. After two years of remote teaching, some schools begin to open for face-to-face or offline learning. It is then interesting to know how the students and teachers responded to the school/ campus opening. This paper reports a small-scale survey involving 110 respondents, both teachers, and students at the secondary and tertiary levels. Thematic coding analysis was carried out to analyze the participantsâ€TM responses. This study revealed that 80% of the respondents opted for online distance learning over offline learning during the pandemic although they reported challenges of teaching and learning within the online mode. The percentage shifted after two years of distance learning. In terms of mode preference, 56% of respondents prefer to go back to offline mode but the remaining 44% want to stay in the online remote mode of teaching and learning. While the majority chose offline learning, several themes of concern emerged from the responses, and reverse eco-shock is the most prominent. As the students and teachers acknowledged the benefits and build comfort in the online teaching and learning environment, they indicate the reimaging of offline teaching and learning. It implies that the practice of offline learning will not be similar to that before the pandemic

Abstract:The influence of online training platforms on continuing education in the fields of science and technology in Indonesia. The rapid evolution of the digital landscape and the increasing demand for up-to-date skills in these sectors serve as the backdrop for this study. The primary objective is to evaluate how these online platforms facilitate skill development and knowledge acquisition among professionals in Indonesia, focusing on accessibility, content relevance, and the effectiveness of online learning methodologies. Utilizing a qualitative research approach, the study employs in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, and content analysis of various online training platforms. This method enables a comprehensive understanding of the user experience and the platforms' educational impact. The findings reveal a significant positive impact, highlighting that these platforms offer flexible, diverse, and up-to-date learning opportunities. They are particularly beneficial for professionals seeking to enhance their expertise amidst busy schedules and geographical constraints. The study also identifies areas for improvement, such as the need for more localized content and enhanced interactive features. Overall, the research underscores the vital role of online training platforms in supporting continuing education and professional development in science and technology sectors within Indonesia.

Abstract:On March 16, 2020, many universities in Indonesia began implementing online-based learning to replace lectures in the classroom. This is done as a way to reduce the transmission of the Covid-19 outbreak in Indonesia. There is an opinion that with the implementation of online learning, especially in mathematics education study programs, there are many obstacles when learning takes place. This study aims to determine the obstacles that arise after the implementation of online learning in mathematics learning in Higher Education. This research is a qualitative case study, assisted by an online survey. The researcher collected data through an online survey consisting of 27 questions. The survey is aimed at lecturers who teach in Mathematics Education study programs in Indonesia. The survey contains structured questions and leads to three parts, namely; basic skills challenges, teaching and learning challenges, and university challenges. The 27 questions contained questions about the ability of platform mastery to support online learning owned by each lecturer. The research involved 26 lecturers from universities in Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, and Sulawesi. The results of this study reveal that all lecturers affected by the pandemic use a Learning Management System (LMS) based website as a means of online learning. The learning management system-based platform is the most widely used (google class and Edmodo) while video conferencing is the second choice (Zoom and Skype). What is interesting is that the LMS available on campus is less attractive to lecturers. However, there are obstacles faced such as the limitations of writing mathematical symbols and the limited basic capabilities of the learning management system and multimedia software to support online learning.

Abstract:This research discovered how the Information and Communication Technology (hereinafter, ICT) tools were used and the obstacles faced in English language teaching after the pandemic. This research used quantitative methods to gather the data. The data was obtained by administering a questionnaire and sharing via Google form with 40 students of the English Department at the State Islamic Institute in Papua. The results of this study indicate that students majoring in English at the Papua State Islamic Institute use two categories of ICT in the learning process, namely web-based learning and non-web-based learning. Web-based learning ICT Tools used are the Internet as the connection as well, YouTube, ZOOM Meeting, WhatsApp, Mobile Phones, and Computer or Laptop. Meanwhile, non-web-based learning ICT Tools used are language Lab, Overhead Projectors, and Films. The ICT Tools used are language lab and overhead projectors. The obstacles faced by the students are Lack of Effective Training, Limited accessibility, and network connection, a school with limited technical support, limited time, and lack of lecturers' competency. The biggest problem reached 59.30% with limited accessibility and network connection and school with limited technical support. This means English Department at State Islamic Institute in Papua has a low internet connection and insufficient computer and software to access.

Abstract:The Covid-19 pandemic has forced the traditional learning system to be replaced with an online learning system or remote teaching. Several studies outside the Indonesian context state that the implementation of the remote teaching method has become a common thing to do. However, in the Indonesian context, the remote teaching method is something new, so that it makes teachers face several problems during the learning process. Thus, the factors that limit the implementation of remote teaching are also definitely different, especially in the Indonesian context. This study aims to find out more clearly about teacher perceptions through limiting factors in the implementation of remote teaching related to what is found in the literature review matrix from several studies outside of the Indonesian context and in the Indonesian context. Many researchers have examined this case, but most only use one research method, qualitative or quantitative. Therefore, this study tries to present different data using mixed methods (qualitative methods using a literature review matrix and interviews, then quantitative methods using questionnaires) so that the data obtained is stronger and more valid. The participants in this study were three high school English teachers. The results of this study indicate that there are nine limiting factors found in the literature review matrix and these factors were confirmed by the subjects. Therefore, the obstacles in remote teaching must be identified to be used for improving the learning process itself, for the government (Ministry of Education and Culture), for the school, teachers, and students.

Teaching English through Online Learning System during Covid-19 Pandemic

Abstract:In the global Covid-19 pandemic, the Ministry of Education in Indonesia also issued a policy of closing schools and replacing the teaching and learning process by using an online learning system. This study aimed at investigating the online learning system in teaching English, which included the institution's support related to the online learning system and the lecturers' opinion in using the online learning system. This research method used descriptive qualitative. The subjects of this research were 81 English lecturers of some colleges or universities in Indonesia. The result showed that the institution's support in the online learning system could be described in three categories: (1) there were 66 respondents or 83.5 % said yes, (2) thee were 8 respondents or 10.1 % said no, and (3) there were 5 respondents or 6.5 % answer with other responses. Meanwhile, the English lecturers' opinion toward implementing an online learning system showed two responses between positive and negative responses. The 77 respondents or 97.5 %, said yes, then 2 respondents or 2.5 % said no to using the online learning system. In the teaching-learning process, the English lectures mostly used one online learning system, and some lectures used two or more online learning system. The 31 respondents or 40.3 % used Google Classroom, 6 respondents or 7.8 % used Zoom, 5 respondents or 6.5 % used Schoology, 5 respondents or 6.5 % used Edmodo, 4 respondents or 5.3 % used Moodle, as 2 respondents or 2.6 % used Google Meet, 2 respondents or 2.6 % used WhatsApp group. The other responses showed that they used self-platform, SPADA System, Elena Platform, UCY Learning, English Discoveries, Email, Skype, and BlogSpot. These results suggest that the online learning system has the potential to help the lecturers and students in the teaching and learning process.
Development of material contents and online assessment based on the SEVIMA EdLink platform for online learning of program evaluation subject during Covid-19 pandemic in Indonesia

Abstract:One of the free platforms made by IT companies in the education sector in Indonesia can be used to facilitate online learning at home during the Covid-19 pandemic. The platform is called the SEVIMA EdLink. This platform needs to be known by academics and the wider community of education in the world. This platform provides facilities to make it easier for users to input material content and online assessment forms. The purpose of this research was to demonstrate the development of material contents of the ‘Program Evaluation’ subject and its assessment form that was embedded into the SEVIMA EdLink platform. The approach used in this research was a development based on the 4D model (Define, Design, Develop, and Disseminate). Subjects who were involved in testing the material contents were 29 students. The measuring instruments used in testing the material contents were questionnaires. Subjects who were involved in the content validity test for multiple-choice test questions were six experts, and two experts were involved in the content validity test for essay test questions. The tools used in testing the content validity of multiple-choice test questions or essay test questions were checklist documents. The analysis technique of the test results of the material contents was descriptive quantitative. The analysis technique for multiple-choice test questions and essay test questions was the comparison of content validity test results with the standard scores of content validity based on Guilford. This research results showed the quality percentage of material contents in the subject of ‘Program Evaluation’ was a good category. The content validity results of the multiple-choice test questions and essay test questions were both in the excellent category.
Lecturers’ experiences of online learning communication in Indonesia during the COVID-19 pandemic: A phenomenological study

Abstract:Background Indonesia is currently implementing educational reforms to enhance university teaching and learning. The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly affected Indonesian universities, requiring lecturers to implement various changes. The phenomenon of online learning communication at various universities in Indonesia is critical considering today’s increasingly fierce competition due to digital disruption coupled with the impact of the pandemic. Therefore, lecturers must implement appropriate methods to conduct online learning communication effectively. Methods This qualitative phenomenological study was designed to explore lecturers’ understanding of the implementation of changes in online learning communication at Indonesian universities. In-depth interviews and field observations were conducted with lecturers who were efficient in online learning using a specific measurement standard. The research participants were identified using purposive sampling with a snowball approach. The study comprised 10 lecturers from UPN Veteran Jakarta who were experienced and efficiently delivered online lectures. Results The results provide a review of factors identified by the phenomenological and qualitative study that contribute to online learning communication, such as chemistry, lecturer preparation, and learning materials. The results of this study revealed several themes. Each section centers on the major themes that emerged from the datasets. Conclusion Our findings aid in a better understanding of the benefits and constraints of using online learning communication in the classroom. These findings are crucial for university lecturers developing methods for enhancing the implementation of online learning communication. Moreover, the findings revealed that lecturers should engage in and create trusting interactions with their students. Providing technical support to keep both teachers and students engaged can be useful. More crucially, multimedia support and learning systems are essential for properly addressing lecturers’ tasks and learning materials. This study improves the understanding of online learning communications implemented by lecturers.

Abstract:Abstract Worldwide, information technology now plays a substantial role in the daily life of most people, whether in the developed world or in developing countries, such as Indonesia. In this fourth most populated country in the world, information technology is widely used for everyday communications and entertainment purposes, as well as for supporting education. Using a survey of 496 students enrolled in a university in Jakarta, this paper reports on a study aimed at assessing the experiences of young Indonesian students undertaking online learning and the potential of this platform for English learning. The findings show that online activities, skills, and perceived usefulness were positively correlated with positive experiences of learning English online. In particular, the perceived usefulness of the Internet and the ability to use different functions of digital devices and applications had a stronger correlation with increased benefits of online English learning. The study generates implications for Indonesian education suggesting a review of the roles of English instructors in promoting English learning through technology, improvement in English instructors’ skills in utilizing technology in their teaching, and support of relevant stakeholders as well as the preparation of English teacher preparation programme to support pre-service teachers for teaching with technology.
Comparative Study of E-Learning Readiness and Socio-Economic Factors during Covid-19 Pandemic: Evidence from High School Students in Urban and Rural Areas of Indonesia

Abstract:As the global pandemic of COVID-19 spreads enormously, educational institutions were forced to close down in most countries, affecting 91% of pupils and causing massive disruption to the education sector. In Indonesia, 62, 5 million students from pre-primary to higher education are forced to shift from conventional learning to a complete move into e-Learning. This study sought to explore students' readiness to cope with online learning both in urban and rural areas of Indonesia and to find the relation whether socio-economic factors during pandemic affect their e-learning readiness. The theory underpinning the study was the e-Learning Readiness theory which measures eight dimensions: human resource, financial, technological, equipment, content, psychological, sociological, and environmental readiness. An online survey was conducted, and a total of 1.260 million students in urban and 846 students in rural areas participated in the study. The data were analyzed using multiple regression and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). This study reveals that students in urban areas are categorized as ready, but they need improvements in several aspects with the readiness index 3, 47. In contrast, students are not ready in rural areas and need several improvements with index 3,01. The study also highlights that basic IT skills competencies are critical for the preparedness of e-learning and should be taught to students. Future studies could analyze whether ICT training will significantly impact their perceives and acceptance of students' e-learning readiness, especially in rural areas, after training has been conducted.

Abstract:Emergency Remote Teaching (ERT) aims to swiftly adapt conventional face-to-face educational methods to alternative (typically virtual) formats during crises. The recent COVID-19 pandemic accentuated the vulnerability of traditional educational systems, revealing limitations in their ability to effectively withstand such unprecedented events, thereby exposing shortcomings in the adopted ERT strategies. The goal of this study is to discuss the establishment of resilient, sustainable, and healthy educational systems in non-crisis times, which will enable teachers and students to make a smoother and less stressful transition to Emergency Remote Teaching (ERT) when necessary. A comprehensive hybrid approach, combining quantitative (interviews) and qualitative (online survey) methods has obtained data from 276 professors in 29 countries. These data have been used to identify a range of challenges related to ERT and their perceived level of difficulty. The methodological and social challenges (overshadowed by technical issues at the beginning of the crisis) identified in this research—such as the lack of personal contact or poor feedback from students—have been found to be the most demanding. From the collected insights regarding the perceived level of difficulty associated with the identified challenges, the present study aims to contribute to making higher education systems more robust in non-crisis times.

Abstract:Higher education has increasingly adopted online and blended models of teaching. Guided by institutional policy and digital competence frameworks, the integration of digital tools and competences is perceived as essential. The pivot to emergency remote teaching (ERT) in response to the COVID-19 pandemic increased the use of digital technologies and the need to deploy and support digital competences. Researchers captured a range of remote teaching practices in higher education across this period that highlight the adaptability of teachers despite a lack of preparation for such an event. This study reviewed empirical studies of ERT from the past 2 years to derive a conceptual frame for ERT digital competence, which was then applied as a lens to analyse teaching or digital competency frameworks from Australian universities. The findings of this paper demonstrate the pre-pandemic teaching and digital competency frameworks captured digital competencies relevant to ERT in varied ways. Practically, the findings provide a starting point for understanding digital competences needed for ERT to ensure future preparedness in responding to a crisis that disrupts educational provision. We also suggest universities can better support the development of teachers' digital competence through practical operationalisations that connect technical and pedagogical knowledge, make digital possibilities across modes of delivery explicit, and acknowledge the need to protect wellbeing of educators.

Abstract:Student boredom in participating in system management learning in distance learning is the main problem in this study. This has an impact on ineffective learning processes and outcomes. This research aims to develop a Humanistic-based Indonesian National Education Innovation E-Module. The method used is research and development with the ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation and Evaluation). The measurement instruments used were questionnaires on material content, accessibility and e-module design. The subjects of this study were experts and students taking the Indonesian National Education Innovation course, as well as lecturers supporting the course. The data analysis used was qualitative and quantitative using descriptive statistical analysis techniques. The research findings show that the Indonesian National Education Innovation E-module product has fulfilled the feasibility and practical aspects after being tested in the field with users and experts. Further research is needed to test the effectiveness of the e-module and whether it can improve student learning outcomes.
