Abstract:Internet of Things (IoT) applications have recently been widely used in safety-critical scenarios. To prevent sensitive information leaks, IoT device vendors provide hardware-assisted protections, called Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs), like ARM Trust-Zone. Programming a TEE-based application requires separate code for two components, significantly slowing down the development process. Existing solutions tackle this issue by automatic code partition while not successfully applying it in two complicated scenarios: adding trusted logic and interactions with secure peripherals.We propose dTEE, a declarative approach to secure IoT applications based on TrustZone. dTEE proposes a rapid approach that enables developers to declare tiered-sensitive variables and functions of existing applications. Besides, dTEE automatically transforms device drivers into trusted ones. We evaluate dTEE on four real-world IoT applications and seven micro-benchmarks. Results show that dTEE achieves high expressiveness for supporting 50% more applications than existing approaches and reduces 90% of the lines of code against handcrafted development.

Abstract:This paper discusses issues in the design of an Autonomous Intelligent Robot Simulation and Debug Environment (AIRSDE) implemented in Java3D/VRML using B/S structure. In HTTP server, intelligent agent technology is introduced to encapsulate all the function modules, and the Agents exchange data through a blackboard system. All the data are stored into a dynamic scene database for on-line debug or offline replay utilization. In HTTP client, 3D virtual scene is divided into static modules and dynamic modules. The static models are created with VRML, which allows for easy definition of geometric shapes in hierarchical groupings. The dynamic models are created with Java 3D, which is capable of providing better integration of 3D scene and the movement of robot. The interaction among the entities in the 3D scene is implemented with Java Applet. Finally, a networked, multi-user, interactively and distributed simulation and debug virtual environment has been established.

Abstract:With the reduced noise margin brought by relentless technology scaling, power integrity assurance has become more challenging than ever. On the other hand, traditional design methodologies typically focus on a single design layer without much cross-layer interaction, potentially introducing unnecessary guard-band and wasting significant design resources. Both issues imperatively call for a cross-layer framework for the co-exploration of power delivery (PD) and system architecture, especially at early design stage with larger design freedom. Unfortunately, such a framework does not exist yet in the literature. As a step forward, this paper provides a run-time simulation framework of both PD and architecture and captures their interactions. Enabled by the proposed recursive run-time PD model, it handles an entire PD system on-the-fly simulation with <1% deviation from SPICE. Moreover, with a seamless interaction among architecture, power and PD simulators, it has the capability to simulate benchmarks with millions of cycles within reasonable time. A support vector regression (SVR) model is employed to further speed up power estimation of functional units to millions cycle/second with good accuracy. The experimental results of running PARSEC suite have illustrated the framework's capability to explore hardware configurations to discover the co-effect of PD and architecture for early stage optimization. Moreover, it also illustrates multiple over-pessimisms in traditional methodologies.

Abstract:IoT application development usually involves separate programming at the device side and server side. While separate programming style is sufficient for many simple applications, it is not suitable for many complex applications that involve complex interactions and intensive data processing. We propose EdgeProg, an edge-centric programming approach to simplify IoT application programming, motivated by the increasing popularity of edge computing. With EdgeProg, users could write application logic in a centralized manner with an augmented If-This-Then-That (IFTTT) syntax and virtual sensor mechanism. The program can be processed at the edge server, which can automatically generate the actual application code and intelligently partition the code into device code and server code, for achieving the optimal latency. EdgeProg employs dynamic linking and loading to deploy the device code on a variety of IoT devices, which do not run any application-specific codes at the start. Results show that EdgeProg achieves an average reduction of 20.96%, 27.8% and 79.41% in terms of execution latency, energy consumption, and lines of code compared with state-of-the-art approaches.

Abstract:The rise of microservice architectures has revolutionized application design, fostering adaptability and resilience. These architectures facilitate scaling and encourage collaborative efforts among specialized teams, streamlining deployment and maintenance. Critical to this ecosystem is the demand for low latency, prompting the adoption of cloud-based structures and in-memory data storage. This shift optimizes data access times, supplanting direct disk access and driving the adoption of non-relational databases. Despite their benefits, microservice architectures present challenges in system performance and debugging, particularly as complexity grows. Performance issues can readily cascade through components, jeopardizing user satisfaction and service quality. Existing monitoring approaches often require code instrumentation, demanding extensive developer involvement. Recent strategies like proxies and service meshes aim to enhance tracing transparency, but introduce added configuration complexities. Our innovative solution introduces a new framework that transparently integrates heterogeneous microservices, enabling the creation of tailored tools for fine-grained performance debugging, especially for in-memory data store-based microservices. This approach leverages transparent user-level tracing, employing a two-level abstraction analysis model to pinpoint key performance influencers. It harnesses system tracing and advanced analysis to provide visualization tools for identifying intricate performance issues. In a performance-centric landscape, this approach offers a promising solution to ensure peak efficiency and reliability for in-memory data store-based cloud applications.

Abstract:Nowadays, the advanced sensor technology with cloud computing and big data is generating large-scale heterogeneous and real-time IOT (Internet of Things) data. To make full use of the data, development and deploy of ubiquitous IOT-based applications in various aspects of our daily life are quite urgent. However, the characteristics of IOT sensor data, including heterogeneity, variety, volume, and real time, bring many challenges to effectively process the sensor data. The Semantic Web technologies are viewed as a key for the development of IOT. While most of the existing efforts are mainly focused on the modeling, annotation, and representation of IOT data, there has been little work focusing on the background processing of large-scale streaming IOT data. In the paper, we present a large-scale real-time semantic processing framework and implement an elastic distributed streaming engine for IOT applications. The proposed engine efficiently captures and models different scenarios for all kinds of IOT applications based on popular distributed computing platform SPARK. Based on the engine, a typical use case on home environment monitoring is given to illustrate the efficiency of our engine. The results show that our system can scale for large number of sensor streams with different types of IOT applications.

Abstract:Tracing serves as a key method for evaluating the performance of microservices-based architectures, which are renowned for their scalability, resource efficiency, and high availability. Despite their advantages, these architectures often pose unique debugging challenges that necessitate trade-offs, including the burden of instrumentation overhead. With Node.js emerging as a leading development environment, recognized for its rapidly growing ecosystem, there is a pressing need for innovative approaches that reduce the telemetry data collection efforts, and the overhead incurred by the environment instrumentation. In response, we introduce a new approach designed for transparent tracing and seamless deployment of microservices in cloud settings. This approach is centered around our newly developed Internal Transparent Tracing and Context Reconstruction (ITTCR) algorithm. ITTCR is adept at correlating internal metrics from various distributed trace files, to reconstruct the intricate execution contexts of microservices operating in a Node.js environment. Our method achieves transparency by directly instrumenting the Node.js virtual machine, enabling the collection and analysis of trace events in a transparent manner. This process facilitates the creation of visualization tools, enhancing the understanding and analysis of microservice performance in cloud environments.

Abstract:Existing researches on distributive and collaborative CAD systems often focus on collaborative request submitting, but not distributive executing. A novel approach on architecture of Collaborative CAD system is proposed in this paper. A Prototype system, GridCAD, is integrated with Web Services-based Distributed-Computing technology and XML/SOAP is adopted as the communications mechanism between Server and Clients. The Session Manager provides the solution of validity maintenance of model under collaborative environment. And particularly, as the core module, Task Manager enables GridCAD to split complex operations dynamically and perform distributively. GridCAD also guarantees interoperability on heterogeneous systems so that different types of systems can communicate smoothly and perform the computation much faster than on a single machine.

Successful integration and collaboration are very important for design systems. Currently many researches focus on client-server structure to keep the data consistent and neutral. This paper discusses the issues and techniques to build a framework to support integration and collaboration in a distributed design environment. Overview of the system architecture and modules of the framework are presented to explain the method for CAD software wrapping and management of design models. The concept of a function block module to integrate different analysis tools and a search engine to find the analysis path for design problems are also presented. A reverse engineering project is used as an example to describe how design process works in a distributed manner.

Abstract:The development of increasingly complex IoT systems requires large engineering environments. These environments generally consist of tools from different vendors and are not necessarily integrated well with each other. In order to automate various analyses, queries across resources from multiple tools have to be executed in parallel to the engineering activities. In this paper, we identify the necessary requirements on such a query capability and evaluate different architectures according to these requirements. We propose an improved lifecycle query architecture, which builds upon the existing Tracked Resource Set (TRS) protocol, and complements it with the MQTT messaging protocol in order to allow the data in the warehouse to be kept updated in real-time. As part of the case study focusing on the development of an IoT automated warehouse, this architecture was implemented for a toolchain integrated using RESTful microservices and linked data.

Abstract:In the Internet of Things (IoT), semantic IoT platforms are often used to solve the challenges associated with the real-time integration of heterogeneous IoT sensor data, domain knowledge and context information. Existing platforms mostly have a static distribution and configuration of queries deployed on the platform's stream processing components. In contrast, the environmental context in which queries are deployed has a very dynamic nature: real-world set-ups involve varying tasks, device resource usage, networking conditions, etc. To solve this mismatch, this paper presents DIVIDE, an IoT platform component built on Semantic Web technologies. DIVIDE has a generic design containing multiple subcomponents that monitor the environment across a cascading architecture. By monitoring the use case context, DIVIDE adaptively derives the appropriate stream processing queries in a context-aware way. Using a Local Monitor deployed on edge devices, situational context parameters are measured and aggregated. The Meta Model allows modeling these measurements, and meta-information about devices and deployed stream processing queries. Through the definition of application-specific Global Monitor queries that are continuously evaluated centrally on the Meta Model, end users can dynamically configure how the situational context should influence the window parameter configuration and distribution of queries in the network. The paper evaluates a first implementation of DIVIDE on a homecare monitoring use case. The results show how DIVIDE can successfully adapt to varying device and networking conditions, taking into account the use case requirements. This way, DIVIDE allows better balancing use case specific trade-offs and achieves more efficient stream processing.

Abstract:In the last years <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://Node.js" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> has emerged as a framework particularly suitable for implementing lightweight IoT applications, thanks to its underlying asynchronous event-driven, non blocking I/O model. However, verifying the correctness of programs with asynchronous nested callbacks is quite difficult, and, hence, runtime monitoring can be a valuable support to tackle such a complex task. Runtime monitoring is a useful software verification technique that complements static analysis and testing, but has not been yet fully explored in the context of Internet of Things (IoT) systems. Trace expressions have been successfully employed for runtime monitoring in widespread multiagent system platforms. Recently, their expressive power has been extended to allow parametric specifications on data that can be captured and monitored only at runtime. Furthermore, they can be language and system agnostic, through the notion of event domain and type. This paper investigates the use of parametric trace expressions as a first step towards runtime monitoring of programs developed in <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://Node.js" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> and Node-RED, a flow-based IoT programming tool built on top of <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://Node.js" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>. Runtime verification of such systems is a task that mostly seems to have been overlooked so far in the literature. Abstract:Dynamic program analysis (also known as profiling) is well-known for its powerful capabilities of identifying performance inefficiencies in software packages. Although a large number of dynamic program analysis techniques are developed in academia and industry, very few of them are widely used by software developers in their regular software developing activities. There are three major reasons. First, the dynamic analysis tools (also known as profilers) are disjoint from the coding environments such as IDEs and editors; frequently switching focus between them significantly complicates the entire cycle of software development. Second, mastering various tools to interpret their analysis results requires substantial efforts; even worse, many tools have their own design of graphical user interfaces (GUI) for data presentation, which steepens the learning curves. Third, most existing tools expose few interfaces to support user-defined analysis, which makes the tools less customizable to fulfill diverse user demands. We develop EasyView, a general solution to integrate the interpretation and visualization of various profiling results in the coding environments, which bridges software developers with profilers to provide easy and intuitive dynamic analysis during the code development cycle. The novelty of EasyView is three-fold. First, we develop a generic data format, which enables EasyView to support mainstream profilers for different languages. Second, we develop a set of customizable schemes to analyze and visualize the profiles in intuitive ways. Third, we tightly integrate EasyView with popular coding environments, such as Microsoft Visual Studio Code, with easy code exploration and user interaction. Our evaluation shows that EasyView is able to support various profilers for different languages and provide unique insights into performance inefficiencies in different domains.

From Monolithic to Microservice Architecture: The Case of Extensible and Domain-Specific IDEs

Abstract:Integrated Development Environments (IDEs) are evolving towards cloud-native applications with the aim to relocate the language services provided by an IDE on distant servers. Existing research works focus on the overall migration process to handle more efficiently their specific requirements. However, the microservicization of legacy monolithic applications is still highly dependent on the specific properties of the application of interest. In this paper, we report our experiment on the microservicization process of the Cloud-Based graphical modeling workbench Sirius Web. We aim to identify the technical challenges related to applications with similar properties, and provide insights for practitioners to migrate their similar applications towards microservices. We discuss the main lessons learned and identify the underlying challenges to be further addressed by the community.

Abstract:With the proliferation of IoT and edge devices, we are observing a lot of consumer electronics becoming yet another IoT and edge devices. Unlike traditional smart devices, such as smart phones, consumer electronics, in general, have significant diversities with fewer number of devices per product model. With such high diversities, the proliferation of edge devices requires frequent and seamless updates of consumer electronics, which makes the manufacturers prone to regressions because the manufacturers have less resource per an instance of software release; i.e., they need to repeat releases by the number of product models times the number of updates. Continuous Integration (CI) systems can help prevent regression bugs from actively developing software packages including the frequently updated device software platforms. The proposed CI system provides a portable and modular software platform automatically inspecting potential issues of incoming changes with the enabled modules: code format and style, performance regressions, static checks on the source code, build and packaging tests, and dynamic checks with the built binary before deploying a platform image on the IoT and edge devices. Besides, our proposed approach is lightweight enough to be hosted in normal desktop computers even for dozens of developers. As a result, it can be easily applied to a lot of various source code repositories. Evaluation results demonstrate that the proposed method drastically improves plug-ins execution time and memory consumption, compared with methods in previous studies.

Abstract:Microservice architecture design highly relies on expert experience and may often result in improper service decomposition. Moreover, a microservice architecture is likely to degrade with the continuous evolution of services. Architecture measurement is thus important for the long-term evolution of microservice architectures. Due to the independent and dynamic nature of services, source code analysis based approaches cannot well capture the interactions between services. In this paper, we propose a trace analysis based microservice architecture measurement approach. We define a trace data model for microservice architecture measurement, which enables fine-grained analysis of the execution processes of requests and the interactions between interfaces and services. Based on the data model, we define 14 architectural metrics to measure the service independence and invocation chain complexity of a microservice system. We implement the approach and conduct three case studies with a student course project, an open-source microservice benchmark system, and three industrial microservice systems. The results show that our approach can well characterize the independence and invocation chain complexity of microservice architectures and help developers to identify microservice architecture issues caused by improper service decomposition and architecture degradation.

Abstract:With the increase in the number of Internet of Things (IoT) devices, more resources can locate at the edge of the Internet. These devices not only collect data about the environment but also affect the environment after certain computations. Conventionally, an IoT application that processes the data provided by devices located in different places, often requires a hierarchical architecture that allows for the data processing and the data collection to occur in different layers. This can be complex for applications requiring direct access to the data provided by remote devices, especially when the data must be exchanged among devices utilizing various machine-to-machine protocols. In this article, an edge service-based architecture is proposed to facilitate the construction of IoT applications. By abstracting the heterogeneous components as virtual devices, it is also possible to construct an IoT application only according to the combination of the virtual devices. The evaluation of the tasks formed by the virtual device shows that it can be efficient to adopt this abstraction method for the utilization of the heterogeneous resources for edge computing.

Abstract:Application development in the Internet of Things (IoT) is challenging because it involves dealing with a wide range of related issues such as lack of separation of concerns, and lack of high-level of abstractions to address both the large scale and heterogeneity. Moreover, stakeholders involved in the application development have to address issues that can be attributed to different life-cycles phases. when developing applications. First, the application logic has to be analyzed and then separated into a set of distributed tasks for an underlying network. Then, the tasks have to be implemented for the specific hardware. Apart from handling these issues, they have to deal with other aspects of life-cycle such as changes in application requirements and deployed devices.Several approaches have been proposed in the closely related fields of wireless sensor network, ubiquitous and pervasive computing, and software engineering in general to address the above challenges. However, existing approaches only cover limited subsets of the above mentioned challenges when applied to the IoT. This paper proposes an integrated approach for addressing the above mentioned challenges. The main contributions of this paper are: (1) a development methodology that separates IoT application development into different concerns and provides a conceptual framework to develop an application, (2) a development framework that implements the development methodology to support actions of stakeholders. The development framework provides a set of modeling languages to specify each development concern and abstracts the scale and heterogeneity related complexity. It integrates code generation, task-mapping, and linking techniques to provide automation. Code generation supports the application development phase by producing a programming framework that allows stakeholders to focus on the application logic, while our mapping and linking techniques together support the deployment phase by producing device-specific code to result in a distributed system collaboratively hosted by individual devices. Our evaluation based on two realistic scenarios shows that the use of our approach improves the productivity of stakeholders involved in the application development.

Abstract:The demand for analyzing enormous IoT datasets is rising in parallel with the popularity of the IoT. There are considerable obstacles to effective processing and analysis due to the amount, velocity, and variety of IoT data. In this research, we present a distributed system that makes use of big data analytic tools like Apache Hive, Spark, and Hadoop to efficiently test the performance of massive IoT datasets. The framework addresses the lack of a comprehensive solution by providing a scalable and fault-tolerant architecture. We discuss the motivation behind real-time performance testing in the context of big data analytics for IoT datasets and highlight the need for a distributed framework. A literature review is conducted to explore existing performance testing frameworks, big data analytic tools, and approaches for performance testing big data analytics. The proposed framework’s key components, including dataset generation, test scenario specification, cluster configuration, performance metrics collection, analysis and visualization modules, and implementation details, including tool choices, are discussed. An experimental evaluation is conducted to validate the framework’s performance, and it is suggested to incorporate blockchain technology. Overall, the proposed framework offers a comprehensive solution for real-time performance testing of large-scale IoT datasets, providing organizations and researchers with a valuable tool to ensure efficient and reliable IoT data processing and analysis.
