Abstract:Introduction: The evidence regarding the effects of the Inverted Classroom on students' metacognitive skills is limited. This study evaluates these effects on student perceptions about knowledge and cognitive regulation during a surgical course. Methods: We measured student perceptions before and after a conventional Inverted Classroom in surgery using the Metacognitive Awareness Inventory. We evaluated the mean differences between the scores of the two measurements using Student's t-test (p < 0.05), and the size of the effect on knowledge and cognitive regulation using Cohen's d test (95%CI). Results: A total of 158 students (pre-intervention) and 155 students (post-intervention) were included in the analysis. Significant differences were found (p < 0.05) in, as well as positive effects on, the students' abilities to know their own learning (declarative knowledge) (d = 0.24; 95%CI, 0.02-0.47), to use learning strategies (procedural knowledge) (d = 0.19; 95%CI, -0.02 to 0.41) and to understand when and why to use these strategies (conditional knowledge) (d = 0.20; 95%CI, -0.01 to 0.42), in addition to the abilities to plan (d = 0.31; 95%CI, 0.09-0.53) and to evaluate their learning (d = 0.31; 95%CI, 0.08-0.53). Conclusions: The Inverted Classroom has positive effects on metacognitive skills according to students' perceptions. Further studies are required that compare these effects with other methodologies for teaching in the classroom and the workplace.
Evaluation of the Effectiveness of MOOC-based Flipped Learning in College Mental Health Curriculum

Abstract:Background and Aim: The flipped classroom redefines psychological health education by using technology for independent study before class and engaging in interactive and applied learning activities in class. Thus, two research objectives were proposed: (1) To compare the difference in the effectiveness of the new MOOC-based flipped learning on students' learning outcomes compared to traditional teaching in undergraduates’ mental health curriculum. (2) To explore students' attitudes to new MOOC-based flipped teaching methods. Materials and Methods: This study was designed as a pretest and posttest trial. The sample was 60 freshmen from two Sichuan University classes allocated to two groups using purposive samplings: group 1 for traditional learning, and group 2 for flipped learning. The performance test and semi-structured interview were employed in this study as research instruments. Both groups' pretest and posttest scores were obtained for learning outcome comparison. The students' attitudes to the new teaching methods were obtained through semi-structured interviews. Results: The mean pretest and posttest scores in group 1 were 58.87 and 82.17 respectively, while in group 2, they were 58.67 and 86.53 respectively. The mean improvement in knowledge score was significantly higher in group 2 (M=27.87, SD=3.14) compared to group 1 (M=23.30, SD=1.69). The level of statistical significance was P < .001. The results of the semi-structured interviews indicated that almost all participants had very positive opinions regarding flipped learning based on MOOCs. Conclusion: The research demonstrates that MOOC-based flipped learning increases the student learning effectiveness to obtain better score performance and make it worth promoting.
Use of a flipped classroom in ophthalmology courses for nursing, dental and medical students: A quasi-experimental study using a mixed-methods approach

Abstract:Background: Traditional teaching is associated with dilemmas, such as low motivation to learn and passive learning. In contrast, use of a flipped classroom with the proper learning design has the potential to promote accelerated learning, bolster transmission of competencies (i.e., critical thinking, communication and problem-solving skills) and improve teamwork capacity, all of which are of great significance in professional healthcare practice, including nursing, dentistry and medicine. Objective: The aim of the study was to examine the effects of using a flipped classroom in ophthalmology courses for undergraduate nursing students, dental students and higher vocational medical students. Design: A quasi-experimental design was used with an intervention (n = 100) and a comparison group (n = 100), pre-/post-testing measures and a mixed-methods approach. Setting: A university in China. Participants: A total of 200 students were included. Methods: Students' self-rated learning ability was measured before and after the courses, and skill exams were performed after the courses. In addition, interviews were conducted with the clinical medical students concerning their experiences of the flipped classroom. Results: Students' self-rated learning ability improved significantly more in the intervention than in the comparison group, for the total scale and the three factors 'learning goals', 'self-efficacy and social learning' and 'problem-solving'. Skill exam scores were statistically significantly better in the intervention than in the comparison group. On the whole, the clinical medicine students felt the flipped classroom had a positive impact and improved their learning ability as well as knowledge in ophthalmology. Conclusions: Use of a flipped classroom for nursing, dental and clinical medical students in ophthalmology courses shows promising results in the form of students' skill exam scores and self-rated learning ability.

Abstract:Background: Medical education is evolving towards more practical, active, effective, and student-centered approaches that address the limitations of traditional lecture methods. Recently, the flipped classroom method has been considered to support these reforms. However, research on the use of flipped classroom methods in medical education, particularly related to clinical scenarios and educational technology, is still in its early stages. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the flipped classroom method using clinical scenarios and educational technology versus subject-based lectures in the course of gastrointestinal physiology for medical students. Methods: A total of 60 medical students participated in this study. The control group (n = 30) received traditional subject-based lectures and participated in question-and-answer sessions. The intervention group (n = 30) received non-attendance educational content and participated in small group discussions based on clinical scenarios. Course satisfaction was measured using an 18-item questionnaire, and learning outcomes were assessed with a 20-question multiple-choice test, corresponding to levels 1 and 2 of Kirkpatrick's model. Data were analyzed using descriptive and analytical statistical tests with SPSS software version 24. Results: The findings indicated that the post-test scores in the intervention group were significantly higher compared to the control group. However, according to the student satisfaction questionnaire, satisfaction was significantly lower in the intervention group compared to the control group. Conclusion: This study demonstrated that the flipped classroom method, compared to traditional lectures, improved the learning and performance of medical students at Hamadan University of Medical Sciences in the course of gastrointestinal physiology.

Abstract:In these lectures I discuss long-scale properties of fluctuating polymerized membranes in the presence of network anisotropy and random heterogeneities. Amazingly, even infinitesimal amount of these seemingly innocuous but physically important ingredients in the membrane's internal structure leads to a wealth of striking qualitatively new phenomena. Anisotropy leads to a ``tubule'' phase that is intermediate in its properties and location on the phase diagram between previously discussed ``crumpled'' and ``flat'' phases. At low temperature, network heterogeneity generates conformationally glassy phases, with membrane normals exhibiting glass order analogous to spin-glasses. The common thread to these distinct membrane phases is that they exhibit universal anomalous elasticity, (singularly length-scale dependent elastic moduli, universal Poisson ratio, etc.), driven by thermal fluctuations and/or disorder and controlled by a nontrivial low-temperature fixed point.
An exploration of metacognitive practices in medical educators

Abstract:Metacognition is the ability to monitor and evaluate one's thoughts about learning and has been shown in some studies to improve the effectiveness of instructors. With dissection-based gross anatomy, instructors dynamically use their metacognition to monitor student learning and adapt their teaching at tableside. This study explored the metacognition of instructors as they taught in an anatomy course for allied health students. All instructors in a doctoral-level gross anatomy course at a single institution, including faculty, associate instructors (AIs), and teaching assistants (TAs), were invited to participate. At the start and end of the course, participating instructors completed pre- and post-questionnaires, which included the Teacher Metacognition Inventory (TMI), a 28-item survey that assesses metacognition as it relates to teaching. After labs, instructors completed reflective journals to provide deeper insight into their metacognition. Reflective journals were then thematically analyzed. Thirteen (52%) instructors participated in this study, including five faculty, three AI, and five TAs. Between the start and end of the course, total TMI score increased from 108.8 to 114.3 (p = 0.046). TAs exhibited the greatest change in total TMI score (Δmean = +11.4) followed by faculty (Δmean = +3.2) and AIs (Δmean = -0.7). Several themes were also identified. For example, TAs were more internally focused on content mastery, whereas faculty were externally focused on interpersonal factors (e.g., inclusive language). These insights into the metacognition of anatomy instructors, though limited in reliability and generalizability, may inform how to best support their professional development. Novices may benefit from content reviews, while experienced instructors may benefit from inclusivity or communications training.
Self-regulated learning: the effect on medical student learning outcomes in a flipped classroom environment

Abstract:Background: The flipped-classroom model is increasingly being adopted in competency-based medical education. However, it poses a major challenge to students who have not mastered self-regulated learning strategies. This study explores which self-regulated learning skills affect student learning performance in the first 2 years of medical school at a university in the midwestern United States. Methods: Survey data were used to assess how 146 first- and second-year medical students' use of self-regulated learning strategies affected their performance on standardized tests. Results: Based on the results of regression analysis and content analysis, it was found that the use of peer learning and help-seeking positively affected the performance of first- and second-year students, respectively; whereas the use of rehearsal had a negative effect on student learning outcomes. Conclusions: The study findings imply that during the transition period from traditional lecture-intensive learning to flipped-classroom learning, promoting peer learning and help-seeking could significantly improve students' academic achievement.

Abstract:BackgroundDifferential diagnosis is a crucial skill for primary care physicians. General practice plays an increasing important role in undergraduate medical education. Via general practice, students may be presented with an overview of the whole spectrum of differential diagnosis in regard to common symptoms encountered in primary care. This project evaluated the impact of a blended learning program (using the inverted classroom approach) on student satisfaction and development of skills and knowledge.MethodsAn elective seminar in differential diagnosis in primary care, which utilized an inverted classroom design, was offered to students. Evaluation followed a mixed methods design: participants completed a pre- and post-test, a questionnaire, and a focus group discussion. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and answers were grouped according to different themes. Test results were analysed using the Wilcoxon matched-pairs signed-ranks test.ResultsParticipants (n = 17) rated the course concept very positively. Especially the inverted classroom approach was appreciated by all students, as it allowed for more time during the seminar to concentrate on interactive and practice based learning. Students (n = 16) showed a post-test significant overall gain in skills and knowledge of 33%.ConclusionsThis study showed a positive effect of the inverted classroom approach on students’ satisfaction and skills and knowledge. Further research is necessary in order to explore the potentials of this approach, especially the impact on development of clinical skills.

Impact of a Hands-on Pre-Clinical Neurosurgery Elective Course on Second-Year Medical Student Interest and Attitudes

Abstract:Introduction: Medical student involvement opportunities and educational experiences with surgical residents during medical school have been shown to increase the chance of students deciding to specialize in surgical specialties. This study aims to determine the effect of a neurosurgery elective during the second preclinical year on student interest and opinion of neurosurgery. Methods: Thirty-nine students completed opinion-based surveys and factual knowledge quizzes during a neurosurgical elective course over 3 iterations, which included lecture and skills lab instruction. Pre- and post-course surveys used the Likert scale, with a score of 1 corresponding to the most negative opinion and a score of 10 corresponding to the most positive opinion, in order to measure various aspects including interest in neurological surgery, understanding of the field, and perception of female inclusion in the field. Weekly pre- and post-lecture quizzes assessed practical knowledge of neurosurgical topics. Results: A higher percentage of students rated neurosurgery highly as a career possibility (⩾8/10 interest level) post-course (58.6%) compared to pre-course (45.7%). Post-course, students reported a significantly increased mean understanding of neurosurgery on the Likert scale compared to pre-course (6.1 ± 1.7 vs 4.4 ± 2.0; P = .001). Knowledge based-content assessment revealed a significant increase in overall correct answers after lectures (mean pre = 3.85, mean post = 5.05, P = .001). Inclusion of female instructors in the second and third iteration of the course resulted in a significant increase in students’ perception of female inclusion in the field of neurosurgery (7.6 compared to 5.6, P = .01). Conclusions: Early exposure to subspecialties may assist in making important career decisions. The implementation of this neurosurgical elective improved medical students’ perception of the field and enhanced knowledge of the lectures and procedures. This study can be used as a framework for implementation of this curriculum at other institutions.
Application of the Inverted Classroom Model for Teaching Pathophysiology to Chinese Undergraduate Medical Students: Usability Study

Abstract:Background: The inverted classroom model differs from the traditional teaching model as it reverses the pattern of knowledge transfer and internalization. In recent years, this new teaching model has received much attention in undergraduate medical education. Pathophysiology is a course in the undergraduate Chinese medical curriculum that is critical in bridging basic medical science and clinical medicine. Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the application of inverted classroom in delivering the course on pathophysiology to Chinese undergraduate medical students. Methods: In the spring semester of 2018, inverted classroom teaching was implemented for second-year clinical medicine students at the College of Medicine at Nanchang University. The topics of hypoxia and respiratory failure were selected for the inverted classroom study. The effect of the inverted classroom on teaching pathophysiology was evaluated using classroom performance metrics, a final examination, and questionnaires. Results: This study found that students in the inverted classroom group achieved higher scores in their in-course assessments (82.35 [SD 11.45] vs 81.33 [SD 9.51], respectively) and in their final exams (73.41 [SD 10.37] vs 71.13 [SD 11.22], respectively) than those in the traditional lecture-based group, but the scores were not significantly different (P=.13, unpaired two-tailed t test). There was also no significant difference in the distribution of the score segments in the class quiz (P=.09, chi-square test) and in the final exams (P=.25, chi-square test) between the 2 groups. Further, most of the students reported that the inverted classroom increased their learning motivation, made them more confident, and helped them understand the content on pathophysiology better. The students in the inverted classroom also improved in their problem-solving skills and teamwork abilities. However, some students from the inverted classroom group also reported that the self-learning and preparatory work before class increased their learning burden. Conclusions: This study shows the feasibility and promise of inverted classroom for teaching pathophysiology to undergraduate Chinese medical students. The inverted classroom improves students' learning interests and attitudes toward learning. However, further studies are required to assess the benefits of broader acceptance and implementation of the inverted classroom among Chinese undergraduate medical students.
Flipped classroom in neurophysiology: performance analysis of a system focusing on intrinsic students' motivation

Abstract:Introduction: Teaching methodologies promoting active learning result in higher-order knowledge application, a desirable outcome in health disciplines like Physiology. Flipped-classroom (FC) promotes active learning and engagement in the classroom. Although specialized research keeps accumulating, the advantages of FC for improving academic outcome and ultimately patient care remain controversial and open to further analysis. Objective: This study evaluates the benefits of applying FC to the Neurophysiology module of a Human Physiology course. Methods:We compare final grades of students exposed to standard lecturing (five-years) vs. FC (six-years), and study the FC impact on student motivation, study time and rewards. Differing from conventional FC, we performed no pre-class/in-class assessments, relying on the students' internal motivation to experience our FC model. A printed student workbook was designed as pre-class material for each session. Reading times respect the expected daily study time of students in our system. Results and discussion: Concerning academic performance, our long-term study reports a significant increase in average scores for FC groups. Overall, students get better scores in multiple choice tests than in problem-solving questions. A more detailed analysis uncovers that our FC model helps students to obtain better scores, reducing variability in performance due to assessment methods. Based on our open-ended survey questions, most students rate the FC environment and in-class activities positively and perceive a positive effect of FC on teachers' performance. An objective automatic Sentiment analysis of open-ended answers reveals that FC is positively appreciated by students, associating positive perceptions to their understanding of physiological concepts, and negative evaluations to their time management.
Short- and Long-Term Influences of Flipped Classroom Teaching in Physiology Course on Medical Students' Learning Effectiveness

Abstract:The flipped classroom (FC) teaching has been increasingly employed in medical education. Many studies have shown this “student-centered” pedagogical model improves students' overall achievement in the course, with students showing more motivation and better self-directed learning skills when compared to the traditional classroom teaching. However, most of the previous studies have been evaluating the short-term effects of FC teaching conducted upon completion of the course. The retention of the promotion and the long-term effects on learning of students' subsequent courses deserve further attention and evaluation. By adopting and running FC teaching in the whole course of physiology, this study aimed to determine the short-term impact of FC teaching on students' learning of physiology course and also the long-term influences in students' learning of follow-up medical curriculums within 18 months after the completion of physiology course. 119 sophomore students majoring in clinical medicine from Central South University were recruited and they were assigned randomly into two groups: the control group ( n =61) who received the traditional lecture (TL) teaching, and the experimental group ( n =58), who received the FC teaching. In this study, students' final exam scores were used to assess their learning effectiveness and an independent samples t -test was conducted to compare scores between the two groups. Our study showed that FC teaching significantly improved the learning outcome of physiology in the experimental group compared with the control group ( P = 0.0001) without obvious impact on the learning of other subjects conducted in the same period of time. Moreover, our results also demonstrated the long-term benefit of FC teaching, with students from the experimental group scoring higher in pathophysiology ( P = 0.006), pathology ( P = 0.029), pharmacology ( P = 0.0089), diagnostics ( P = 0.01) and internal medicine ( P = 0.0004) than those from the control group. The study results indicate that FC is a promising teaching approach to increase students' learning effectiveness in physiology course, and the long-term effects of FC facilitate the learning of the follow-up medical courses. Furthermore, this study also demonstrates that although the time investment on physiology is increased by FC teaching, it does not weaken students' learning of other courses conducted in the same period of time.

Teaching for understanding in medical classrooms using multimedia design principles

Abstract:OBJECTIVES: In line with a recent report entitled Effective Use of Educational Technology in Medical Education from the Association of American Medical Colleges Institute for Improving Medical Education (AAMC-IME), this study examined whether revising a medical lecture based on evidence-based principles of multimedia design would lead to improved long-term transfer and retention in Year 3 medical students. A previous study yielded positive effects on an immediate retention test, but did not investigate long-term effects.METHODS: In a pre-test/post-test control design, a cohort of 37 Year 3 medical students at a private, midwestern medical school received a bullet point-based PowerPoint™ lecture on shock developed by the instructor as part of their core curriculum (the traditional condition group). Another cohort of 43 similar medical students received a lecture covering identical content using slides redesigned according to Mayer's evidence-based principles of multimedia design (the modified condition group).RESULTS: Findings showed that the modified condition group significantly outscored the traditional condition group on delayed tests of transfer given 1 week (d = 0.83) and 4 weeks (d = 1.17) after instruction, and on delayed tests of retention given 1 week (d = 0.83) and 4 weeks (d = 0.79) after instruction. The modified condition group also significantly outperformed the traditional condition group on immediate tests of retention (d = 1.49) and transfer (d = 0.76).CONCLUSIONS: This study provides the first evidence that applying multimedia design principles to an actual medical lecture has significant effects on measures of learner understanding (i.e. long-term transfer and long-term retention). This work reinforces the need to apply the science of learning and instruction in medical education.

Early gastric cancer in young adults.

Abstract:The clinicopathological features of 31 young patients with early gastric cancer, defined as under 40 years of age, were reviewed retrospectively from hospital records between 1969 and 1993. The results were compared with those for 549 patients 40 years of age or older. Early gastric cancer was found in 36.0% of the younger patients with gastric cancers and in 36.3% of the older patients with those. The gender ratio of m/f was 1.21 for the younger patients and 2.37 for the older patients. The macroscopic characteristics of early gastric cancer for the younger patients were superficial depressed lesions and a larger tumor size. The distinguished histologic features of early gastric cancer for the younger patients were a diffuse type of cancer and infiltrative tumor growth with a scirrhous stroma. More extensive lymph node dissection was performed on the younger patients than on the older patients. The younger patients had a prognosis similar to that of the older patients. We conclude that early gastric cancer in young patients possesses histological aggressiveness, but those patients rather show a similar survival to older patients.
Effects of a quasi-experimental study of using flipped classroom approach to teach evidence-based medicine to medical technology students

Abstract:Abstract Background Flipped classroom is known to improve learning efficiency and to develop one’s ability to apply high-level knowledge. To investigate the effect of flipped classroom approach on teaching evidence-based medicine to medical technology students, we conducted a tailor-made six flipped classroom based EBM courses for medical technology students. Methods This study adopted a qusai-experimental design with 62 medical technology interns as the research object. Students in the experimental group attended the flipped classroom course, while students in the control group attended the traditional course. The learning outcomes were evaluated by Fresno test in both groups. Furthermore, to understand student’s perceptions on the flipped classroom approach, students in the experimental group were required to fill in a satisfaction survey and answer some open-ended questions. Results The Fresno test scores of the experimental group were significantly higher than that of the control group. From the results of the satisfaction survey, we know that students were satisfied with this course format. Students claimed that the flipped classroom approach could improve their learning efficiency and the interactions with teacher could help them to think more deeply. Conclusions To conclude, most students showed positive attitudes and views on flipped classroom strategy. Moreover, students’ questions were solved more effectively during class resulting in an improvement of effectiveness of evidence-based medicine trainings.

The impact of flipped classroom: Evaluation of cognitive level and attitude of undergraduate medical students

Abstract:Background: Anatomy is a core component of the basic health sciences and a structural foundation for higher clinical courses. Mastering this foundational science is an essential competency for health care providers. Some medical schools still adopt the traditional teacher-centered methods for teaching anatomy with the disadvantages of lacking the students' opportunity to practice higher levels of thinking such as application, interpretation, or analysis during class. One of the promising teaching strategies that enhance student engagement is the flipped classroom (FC). The present study explored the students' achievement during the anatomy FC, compared with traditional classroom for the first time in Qassim College of Medicine. Methods: Online educational materials were uploaded on the Blackboard in the form of electronic textbooks, PowerPoint presentations, online websites, journal articles and multimedia in the pre-class phase of the FC. The in-class phase included open discussion and problem-solving activities were based upon the digitalized resources. Students' attendance was recorded during the in-class sessions. Comparison between the students' scores of the pre-and post-tests for both the FC and traditional classroom. A computed students' survey towards the FC was analysed. Results: The mean students' scores of the lower and higher-order thinking questions of the FC in the pre-tests were significantly increased in the pre-tests (4.40 ± 1.18 and 1.39 ± 0.53 respectively), compared with that of the traditional classroom (1.44 ± 1.09 and 0.41 ± 0.51 respectively) as well as in the post-tests (5.73 ± 1.03 and 2.14 ± 0.71), compared with that of the traditional classroom (5.07 ± 1.2 and 1.66 ± 0.93 respectively). The absence rate of the students during the FC was lower by 16.13%. Students' survey conveyed their satisfaction towards the FC. Cronbach's alpha test revealed high reliability of all students' survey items and their correlation coefficient was positive. Conclusion: The current work concluded that the educational outcome gained from the technology-enhanced active learning (TEAL), through the implementation of the anatomy FC, enhanced the students' achievement and commitment and suggested the upgrading of the anatomy teaching methods and exploring the long-term effects of the FC.

Abstract:More and more often, we hear that higher education should foment critical thinking. The new skills focus for university teaching grants a central role to critical thinking in new study plans; however, using these skills well requires a certain degree of conscientiousness and its regulation. Metacognition therefore plays a crucial role in developing critical thinking and consists of a person being aware of their own thinking processes in order to improve them for better knowledge acquisition. Critical thinking depends on these metacognitive mechanisms functioning well, being conscious of the processes, actions, and emotions in play, and thereby having the chance to understand what has not been done well and correcting it. Even when there is evidence of the relation between metacognitive processes and critical thinking, there are still few initiatives which seek to clarify which process determines which other one, or whether there is interdependence between both. What we present in this study is therefore an intervention proposal to develop critical thinking and meta knowledge skills. In this context, Problem-Based Learning is a useful tool to develop these skills in higher education. The ARDESOS-DIAPROVE program seeks to foment critical thinking via metacognition and Problem-Based Learning methodology. It is known that learning quality improves when students apply metacognition; it is also known that effective problem-solving depends not only on critical thinking, but also on the skill of realization, and of cognitive and non-cognitive regulation. The study presented hereinafter therefore has the fundamental objective of showing whether instruction in critical thinking (ARDESOS-DIAPROVE) influences students’ metacognitive processes. One consequence of this is that critical thinking improves with the use of metacognition. The sample was comprised of first-year psychology students at Public University of the North of Spain who were undergoing the aforementioned program; PENCRISAL was used to evaluate critical thinking skills and the Metacognitive Activities Inventory (MAI) for evaluating metacognition. We expected an increase in critical thinking scores and metacognition following this intervention. As a conclusion, we indicate actions to incentivize metacognitive work among participants, both individually via reflective questions and decision diagrams, and at the interactional level with dialogues and reflective debates which strengthen critical thinking.

Effect of Feedback Modality on Simulated Surgical Skills Learning Using Automated Educational Systems– A Four-Arm Randomized Control Trial

Abstract:Objective To explore optimal feedback methodologies to enhance trainee skill acquisition in simulated surgical bimanual skills learning during brain tumor resections. Hypotheses (1) Providing feedback results in better learning outcomes in teaching surgical technical skill when compared to practice alone with no tailored performance feedback. (2) Providing more visual and visuospatial feedback results in better learning outcomes when compared to providing numerical feedback. Design A prospective 4-parallel-arm randomized controlled trial. Setting Neurosurgical Simulation and Artificial Intelligence Learning Centre, McGill University, Canada. Participants Medical students ( n = 120) from 4 Quebec medical schools. Results Participants completed a virtually simulated tumor resection task 5 times while receiving 1 of 4 feedback based on their group allocation: (1) practice-alone without feedback, (2) numerical feedback, (3) visual feedback, and (4) visuospatial feedback. Outcome measures were participants' scores on 14-performance metrics and the number of expert benchmarks achieved during each task. There were no significant differences in the first task which determined baseline performance. A statistically significant interaction between feedback allocation and task repetition was found on the number of benchmarks achieved, F (10.558, 408.257)=3.220, p < 0.001. Participants in all feedback groups significantly improved their performance compared to baseline. The visual feedback group achieved significantly higher number of benchmarks than the practice-alone group by the third repetition of the task, p = 0.005, 95%CI [0.42 3.25]. Visual feedback and visuospatial feedback improved performance significantly by the second repetition of the task, p = 0.016, 95%CI [0.19 2.71] and p = 0.003, 95%CI [0.4 2.57], respectively. Conclusion Simulations with autonomous visual computer assistance may be effective pedagogical tools in teaching bimanual operative skills via visual and visuospatial feedback information delivery.

Effectiveness of different strategies to teach empathy among medical students: A randomized controlled study

Abstract:Objectives: To explore the effectiveness of two educational strategies for teaching empathy to medical students, focusing on their skills and on the theoretical knowledge and self-perception of empathy by patients, professors, and observers. Methods: This is a randomized controlled study. Clerkship students were divided into two groups: an active group - Role Play and Reflection Group(RRG), and a more traditional group - Lecture Presentation Group(LPG). They were assessed pre- and post-intervention using the Jefferson Empathy Scale(JSPE), ESWIM Empathy Scale, CARE, empathic skills through simulated patient encounters, and a theoretical knowledge test. Results: A total of 169 students were included. The RRG had higher scores (d=0.81) and greater gains (d=0.82) in empathic skills than the LPG. However, there were no significant differences in knowledge or other scales. Upon assessing skill acquisition (Post-Pre gains), there was a significant increase in both groups for all outcomes, except for JSPE in the LPG group and ESWIM for both groups. Conclusion: Medical empathy can be taught, and active learning methodologies can lead to better outcomes, especially on the ability to provide empathic care. Practice implications: These findings reinforce existing literature and helps medical schools make informed decisions regarding their teaching methodologies. Abstract:Background Neuroanatomy is essential to clinical neurosciences and is one of the most difficult components of the anatomy curriculum. Flipped classrooms are one of the pedagogical approaches that have been found to enhance students' abilities and encourage in‐depth learning. The current study aims to assess the attitudes and effects of flipped classrooms on neuroanatomy teaching among medical students compared to traditional classrooms. Methods A quasi‐experimental study was carried out during the period January through June 2023. The effectiveness of teaching neuroanatomy in flipped classrooms versus traditional classrooms was assessed using formative assessment and a pre‐designed structured questionnaire. The questionnaire was composed of four sections assessing different domains on a Likert scale ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). Results The total sample reached 214 students. Most students' attitude statements covering skills, knowledge and learning process, and length of time were significantly in favor of flipped teaching at the expense of traditional teaching. Then mean examination grades were significantly higher for pre‐test flipped and post‐test flipped in comparison to pre‐test and post‐test traditional examination. Conclusions Although the flipped classroom is an effective method of learning neuroanatomy as compared to traditional classes, it faces some challenges in its implementation. Such challenges need awareness and solutions from educational institutions.
