Abstract:Tea is one of important cash crops in China. Computer vision plays an important role in pest detection. Automatic classification of insect species in field is more difficult than the generic object classification because of complex background in filed and high appearance similarity among insect species. In this paper, we proposed an insect recognition system on the basis of image saliency analysis and a deep learning model, i.e. convolutional neural network (CNN), which has a good robustness with avoiding the features selected by artificial means. In image saliency analysis, we segmented the original images into super-pixel regions firstly. Then we quantized each RGB (red, green, blue) color channel and made them have 10 different values, which reduced the number of colors to 1000, and sped up the process of the color contrast of the pest objects and the background at region level. Finally, we obtained the saliency value of each region by combining their color contrast and spatial distances. The saliency values of all regions in each image were used to construct a saliency map, which was offered as the initial area for GrabCut algorithm to define the segmentation result and localize the pest object. The images after localization were quantized to 256×256 dpi for CNN training and classifying. CNN was trained end to end, from raw pixels to ultimate categories, thereby alleviating the requirement to manually design a suitable feature extractor. Based on theoretical analysis and experimental evaluation, we optimized the critical structure parameters and training strategy of CNN to seek the best configuration. The overall architecture included a number of sensitive parameters and optimization strategies that could be changed. We determined the local receptive field size, number, and convolutional stride as 7×7 dpi, 64 and 4, respectively. Dropout ratio for the fully-connected layers was 0.7. The loss function Softmax was fit for the pest classification system. To further improve the practical utility of CNN, we focused on structural changes of the overall architecture that enabled a faster running with small effects on the performance. We analyzed the performance and the corresponding runtime of our model by reducing its depth (number of layers) and width (number of convolution kernel in each layer). Removing the fully-connected layers (FC6, FC7) made only a slight difference to the overall architecture. These layers contained almost 90% of the parameters and when they were removed, the memory consumption decreased to 29.8 MB. But, removing the intermediate convolutional layers (Conv2, Conv3, Conv4, Conv5) resulted in a dramatic decrease in both accuracy and runtime. This suggested that the intermediate convolutional layers (Conv2, Conv3, Conv4, Conv5) constituted the main part of the computational resource, and their depth was important for achieving good results. We then investigated the effects of adjusting the sizes of all convolutional layers, and the filters in each convolutional layer were reduced to 64 each time. Surprisingly, all architectures showed significant decreases in running time with relatively small effects on performance. Finally, we determined the convolution kernel numbers of Conv2-Conv5: 64-192-192-64. On the test set of tea field images, the architecture before and after shrinking respectively achieved the average accuracy (AA) of 0.915 and 0.881, respectively, superior to previous methods for pest image recognition. Further, after optimization the running time reduced to 0.7 ms and the memory required was 6 MB.

Abstract:Rice planthoppers are among the most severe migratory pests affecting rice, characterized by small size and rapid reproduction, leading to sudden and explosive outbreaks. Therefore, timely and accurate monitoring of rice planthopper populations is crucial. Applying machine vision to field monitoring of rice planthoppers can reduce labor and material costs. Existing literature lacks research on field detection and counting of rice planthoppers, and general detection and counting methods suffer from performance degradation in complex environments. In this study, we propose the R ice P lant h opper Counter (RPH-Counter), a novel detection and counting architecture. The model is a simple Fully Convolutional Network (FCN). Initially, we propose the Object Counting loss (OC loss), which includes four sub-loss functions that compel the FCN to learn each object's center and boundary positions while constraining false positives. After training, the FCN can predict a separate spot for each rice planthopper, achieving precise localization and counting of the pests. Then, we propose the Self-Attention Feature Pyramid Network (SAFPN) by adding additional Spatial Self-Attention (SSA) modules at the lateral connections of C3 to C5, enhancing the model's performance in complex environments at a lower computational cost. We collected a large-scale field rice planthopper dataset, containing approximately 140,000 annotated rice planthoppers. The evaluation metrics are localization accuracy and counting error. Experimental results show that the RPH-Counter, with lower computational complexity, significantly improves performance, achieving an F1 score of 92.36%, a Mean Absolute Error (MAE) of only 2.40, and an R-squared (R 2 ) of 0.985. Compared to the state-of-the-art object detectors, the F1 score improved by 8.62%, and the counting error decreased by 61%. Compared to the state-of-the-art density estimation methods, the counting error decreased by 23%, with precise localization ability and multi-class expandability. This method offers a new research approach and promising direction for field pest counting and pest population monitoring.

Abstract:Pest infestation poses significant threats to grain storage due to pests' behaviors of feeding, respiration, excretion, and reproduction. Efficient pest detection and control are essential to mitigate these risks. However, accurate detection of small grain pests remains challenging due to their small size, high variability, low contrast, and cluttered background. Salient pest detection focuses on the visual features that stand out, improving the accuracy of pest identification in complex environments. Drawing inspiration from the rapid pest recognition abilities of humans and birds, we propose a novel Cascaded Aggregation Convolution Network (CACNet) for pest detection and control in stored grain. Our approach aims to improve detection accuracy by employing a reverse cascade feature aggregation network that imitates the visual attention mechanism in humans when observing and focusing on objects of interest. The CACNet uses VGG16 as the backbone network and incorporates two key operations, namely feature enhancement and feature aggregation. These operations merge the high-level semantic information and low-level positional information of salient objects, enabling accurate segmentation of small-scale grain pests. We have curated the GrainPest dataset, comprising 500 images showcasing zero to five or more pests in grains. Leveraging this dataset and the MSRA-B dataset, we validated our method's efficacy, achieving a structure S-measure of 91.9%, and 90.9%, and a weighted F-measure of 76.4%, and 91.0%, respectively. Our approach significantly surpasses the traditional saliency detection methods and other state-of-the-art salient object detection models based on deep learning. This technology shows great potential for pest detection and assessing the severity of pest infestation based on pest density in grain storage facilities. It also holds promise for the prevention and control of pests in agriculture and forestry.
Effective Insect Recognition Using a Stacked Autoencoder with Maximum Correntropy Criterion

Abstract:Throughout the history, insects had been intimately connected to humanity, in both positive and negative ways. Insects play an important part in crop pollination, on the other hand, some of them spread diseases that kill millions of people every year. Effective control of harmful insects while having little impact to beneficial insects and environment is extremely important. Recently, an intelligent trap that uses laser sensors was presented to control the population of target insects. The device could record and analyze sensor signals when an insect passes through the trap and make quick decisions whether to catch it or not. The effectiveness of the trap relies on the correct choice of classification algorithm to perform the insect detection. In this paper, we propose to use a deep neural network with maximum correntropy criterion (MCC) for reliable classification of insects in real-time. Experimental results show that, deep networks are effective for learning stable features from brief insect passage signals. By replacing the mean square error cost with MCC, the robustness of auto encoders against noise is improved significantly and robust features could be learned. The method is tested on five species of insects and a total of 5325 passages. High classification accuracy of 92.1 % is achieved. Compared with previously applied methods, better classification performance is obtained using only 10% of the computation time. Therefore, our method is efficient and reliable for online insect detection.
Locally Grouped and Scale-Guided Attention for Dense Pest Counting

Abstract:This study introduces a new dense pest counting problem to predict densely distributed pests captured by digital traps. Unlike traditional detection-based counting models for sparsely distributed objects, trap-based pest counting must deal with dense pest distributions that pose challenges such as severe occlusion, wide pose variation, and similar appearances in colors and textures. To address these problems, it is essential to incorporate the local attention mechanism, which identifies locally important and unimportant areas to learn locally grouped features, thereby enhancing discriminative performance. Accordingly, this study presents a novel design that integrates locally grouped and scale-guided attention into a multiscale CenterNet framework. To group local features with similar attributes, a straightforward method is introduced using the heatmap predicted by the first hourglass containing pest centroid information, which eliminates the need for complex clustering models. To enhance attentiveness, the pixel attention module transforms the heatmap into a learnable map. Subsequently, scale-guided attention is deployed to make the object and background features more discriminative, achieving multiscale feature fusion. Through experiments, the proposed model is verified to enhance object features based on local grouping and discriminative feature attention learning. Additionally, the proposed model is highly effective in overcoming occlusion and pose variation problems, making it more suitable for dense pest counting. In particular, the proposed model outperforms state-of-the-art models by a large margin, with a remarkable contribution to dense pest counting.

Abstract:We present a pipeline for the visual localization and classification of agricultural pest insects by computing a saliency map and applying deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) learning. First, we used a global contrast region-based approach to compute a saliency map for localizing pest insect objects. Bounding squares containing targets were then extracted, resized to a fixed size and used to construct a large standard database called Pest ID . This database was then utilized for self-learning of local image features which were, in turn, used for classification by DCNN. DCNN learning optimized the critical parameters, including size, number and convolutional stride of local receptive fields, dropout ratio and the final loss function. To demonstrate the practical utility of using DCNN, we explored different architectures by shrinking depth and width and found effective sizes that can act as alternatives for practical applications. On the test set of paddy field images, our architectures achieved a mean Accuracy Precision (mAP) of 0.951, a significant improvement over previous methods.

Abstract:Insect pests have always been one of the main hazards affecting crop yield and quality in traditional agriculture. An accurate and timely pest detection algorithm is essential for effective pest control; however, the existing approach suffers from a sharp performance drop when it comes to the pest detection task due to the lack of learning samples and models for small pest detection. In this paper, we explore and study the improvement methods of convolutional neural network (CNN) models on the Teddy Cup pest dataset and further propose a lightweight and effective agricultural pest detection method for small target pests, named Yolo-Pest, for the pest detection task in agriculture. Specifically, we tackle the problem of feature extraction in small sample learning with the proposed CAC3 module, which is built in a stacking residual structure based on the standard BottleNeck module. By applying a ConvNext module based on the vision transformer (ViT), the proposed method achieves effective feature extraction while keeping a lightweight network. Comparative experiments prove the effectiveness of our approach. Our proposal achieves 91.9% mAP0.5 on the Teddy Cup pest dataset, which outperforms the Yolov5s model by nearly 8% in mAP0.5. It also achieves great performance on public datasets, such as IP102, with a great reduction in the number of parameters.

Trap-Based Pest Counting: Multiscale and Deformable Attention CenterNet Integrating Internal LR and HR Joint Feature Learning

Abstract:Pest counting, which predicts the number of pests in the early stage, is very important because it enables rapid pest control, reduces damage to crops, and improves productivity. In recent years, light traps have been increasingly used to lure and photograph pests for pest counting. However, pest images have a wide range of variability in pest appearance owing to severe occlusion, wide pose variation, and even scale variation. This makes pest counting more challenging. To address these issues, this study proposes a new pest counting model referred to as multiscale and deformable attention CenterNet (Mada-CenterNet) for internal low-resolution (LR) and high-resolution (HR) joint feature learning. Compared with the conventional CenterNet, the proposed Mada-CenterNet adopts a multiscale heatmap generation approach in a two-step fashion to predict LR and HR heatmaps adaptively learned to scale variations, that is, changes in the number of pests. In addition, to overcome the pose and occlusion problems, a new between-hourglass skip connection based on deformable and multiscale attention is designed to ensure internal LR and HR joint feature learning and incorporate geometric deformation, thereby resulting in an improved pest counting accuracy. Through experiments, the proposed Mada-CenterNet is verified to generate the HR heatmap more accurately and improve pest counting accuracy owing to multiscale heatmap generation, joint internal feature learning, and deformable and multiscale attention. In addition, the proposed model is confirmed to be effective in overcoming severe occlusions and variations in pose and scale. The experimental results show that the proposed model outperforms state-of-the-art crowd counting and object detection models.

An effective pest detection method with automatic data augmentation strategy in the agricultural field

Abstract:Currently, computer vision technology has been applied to detect and recognize pests for integrated pest management (IPM). Recent studies have shown that the accuracy of pest detection and recognition has been rapidly improved with the development of deep learning. However, complex backgrounds, various poses, and different scales among insect species in the field will aggravate the difficulty of pest detection. To address the pest detection and recognition problem in wild field, in this paper, we firstly devise a novel automatic data augmentation method to search for the appropriate augmentation strategy adaptively and model data more effectively. Secondly, Res2Net is used as backbone for obtaining richer detailed information of small pest, and a reverse feature fusion layer is introduced into feature pyramid networks (FPN) to learn more details. During network training, the CIoU bounding box regression loss function and cross entropy loss after label smoothing are introduced for accurate localization and recognition of small pests. When testing, the test time augmentation (TTA) strategy is used to further improve pest detection performance and reduce the probability of missing detection by inferring pest images at different scales. We evaluate the performance of our method on the pest dataset including 4 k images and 4 classes (wheat sawfly, wheat aphid, wheat mite and rice planthopper). Our method achieves the pest detection performance of 81.0% mean Average Precision (mAP), which improves 5.7%, 4.0% and 3.1% compared to three state-of-the-art approaches YOLOv4, Faster R-CNN, and Cascade R-CNN detectors, respectively.

Interactive Image-Based Aphid Counting in Yellow Water Traps under Stirring Actions

Abstract:The current vision-based aphid counting methods in water traps suffer from undercounts caused by occlusions and low visibility arising from dense aggregation of insects and other objects. To address this problem, we propose a novel aphid counting method through interactive stirring actions. We use interactive stirring to alter the distribution of aphids in the yellow water trap and capture a sequence of images which are then used for aphid detection and counting through an optimized small object detection network based on Yolov5. We also propose a counting confidence evaluation system to evaluate the confidence of count-ing results. The final counting result is a weighted sum of the counting results from all sequence images based on the counting confidence. Experimental results show that our proposed aphid detection network significantly outperforms the original Yolov5, with improvements of 33.9% in AP@0.5 and 26.9% in AP@[0.5:0.95] on the aphid test set. In addition, the aphid counting test results using our proposed counting confidence evaluation system show significant improvements over the static counting method, closely aligning with manual counting results.

Towards Scalable Insect Monitoring: Ultra-Lightweight CNNs as On-Device Triggers for Insect Camera Traps

Abstract:Camera traps, combined with AI, have emerged as a way to achieve automated, scalable biodiversity monitoring. However, the passive infrared (PIR) sensors that trigger camera traps are poorly suited for detecting small, fast-moving ectotherms such as insects. Insects comprise over half of all animal species and are key components of ecosystems and agriculture. The need for an appropriate and scalable insect camera trap is critical in the wake of concerning reports of declines in insect populations. This study proposes an alternative to the PIR trigger: ultra-lightweight convolutional neural networks running on low-powered hardware to detect insects in a continuous stream of captured images. We train a suite of models to distinguish insect images from backgrounds. Our design achieves zero latency between trigger and image capture. Our models are rigorously tested and achieve high accuracy ranging from 91.8% to 96.4% AUC on validation data and >87% AUC on data from distributions unseen during training. The high specificity of our models ensures minimal saving of false positive images, maximising deployment storage efficiency. High recall scores indicate a minimal false negative rate, maximising insect detection. Further analysis with saliency maps shows the learned representation of our models to be robust, with low reliance on spurious background features. Our system is also shown to operate deployed on off-the-shelf, low-powered microcontroller units, consuming a maximum power draw of less than 300mW. This enables longer deployment times using cheap and readily available battery components. Overall we offer a step change in the cost, efficiency and scope of insect monitoring. Solving the challenging trigger problem, we demonstrate a system which can be deployed for far longer than existing designs and budgets power and bandwidth effectively, moving towards a generic insect camera trap.

Automatic moth detection from trap images for pest management

Abstract:Monitoring the number of insect pests is a crucial component in pheromone-based pest management systems. In this paper, we propose an automatic detection pipeline based on deep learning for identifying and counting pests in images taken inside field traps. Applied to a commercial codling moth dataset, our method shows promising performance both qualitatively and quantitatively. Compared to previous attempts at pest detection, our approach uses no pest-specific engineering which enables it to adapt to other species and environments with minimal human effort. It is amenable to implementation on parallel hardware and therefore capable of deployment in settings where real-time performance is required.

Abstract:Purpose: A deep learning-based intelligent system has been developed for the identification and detection of high-density small target pests with the aim of addressing the limitations observed in previous detection systems and manual sorting. The novel system promises to overcome issues of low detection accuracy, low detection efficiency, and serious leakage and error detection. It is expected to significantly improve the efficiency of pest detection, thereby offering a potential solution to the challenges posed by the presence of these pests in agricultural settings. Methods: In this paper, we propose an enhanced YOLOv5s model to tackle challenges in pest detection, such as small targets, high densities, and species diversity. Our method embeds Channel Attention (CA) modules into the algorithm and broadens the shallow feature detection scale of the original FPNet, bolstering small-target detection. Network convergence is accelerated using the Kmeans++ algorithm for prior frame generation and YOLOv5s’ intrinsic weights for transfer learning. The Efficient Intersection over Union (EIOU) loss function is adopted to address unbalanced data labels. Furthermore, we develop an algorithm to determine pest infestation levels, transforming detection results into pest grade evaluations. These advancements form the core of our proposed intelligent pest identification and detection system. Results: In our enhanced YOLOv5s model, we assessed the system’s performance using a dataset comprising six prevalent pest species. This dataset was specifically curated to emulate real-life detection scenarios, featuring small pest targets with similar appearances and imbalanced data labels. We compared our model with a common one-stage model and noted average improvements of 5.5%, 2%, and 3.95% in accuracy, recall, and detection precision respectively across both sparse and dense scenarios. Importantly, the enhanced model maintained a detection time of roughly 10ms per image and was only 1MB larger than the original model, illustrating a balance between accuracy and efficiency. Furthermore, our algorithm enables the assessment of pest grades based on the input detection results, illustrating the degree of pest infestation. Conclusion: The present paper describes the development of an intelligent system for the automatic identification and detection of pests. Experimental results demonstrate the high efficiency and efficacy of the proposed system in identifying and detecting common pests, even in complex scenarios characterized by high pest density and data label imbalance. Notably, the proposed system has the potential to assist practitioners in the fields of agriculture and forestry to make informed decisions on pest control, thereby improving work efficiency and productivity.

Abstract:<p>Precision agriculture poses new challenges for real-time monitoring pest population in field based on new-generation AI technology. In order to provide a big data resource for training pest detection deep learning models, this paper establishes a large-scale multi-target standardized data set of agricultural pests, named Pest24. Specifically, the data set currently consists of 25,378 field pest annotated images collected from our automatic pest trap & imaging device. Totally, 24 categories of typical pests are involved in Pest24, which dominantly destroy field crops in China every year. We apply several state-of-the-art deep learning detection methods, Faster RCNN, SSD, YOLOv3, Cascade R-CNN to detect the pests in the data set, and obtain encouraging results for real-time monitoring field crop pests. To explore the factors that affect the detection accuracy of pests, we analyze the data set in a variety of aspects, finding that three factors, <em>i.e</em>. relative scale, number of instances and object adhesion, mainly influence the pest detection performance. Overall, Pest24 is featured typically with large scale multi-pest image data, very small object scales, high object similarity and dense pest distribution. We hope that Pest24 promotes accurate multi-pest monitoring for precision agriculture and also benefits the machine vision community by providing a new specialized object detection benchmark.</p>

Abstract:The recognition and counting of apple pests sampled by different sex attractants are very important and significant for pest control. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are common artificial intelligence algorithms widely used in image recognition and counting. However, because the sizes of different species of pests are different and the densities of pests on the sticky board are sometimes considerable, it is difficult to recognise and count them accurately and efficiently. This study proposes an improved recognition and counting approach based on deep learning with data reorganisation, termed ‘MPest-RCNN’. The contributions herein are twofold: (1) A new structure of Faster R-CNN is proposed by using ResNet101 feature extractor which has higher precision of recognition. (2) We propose a new convolutional network structure with small anchors to extract features such that the recognition accuracy is improved for small pests. We took three typical pests in apple orchards to establish an original data set using sex attractants. The proposed MPest-RCNN model solves the recognition problem of multiple types and sizes of pests by using different sex attractants. Finally, experiments are conducted, and a comparative analysis is provided for the proposed approach. The experimental results demonstrate that the precision, sensitivity, specificity, and F1-Score of the proposed approach reach 99.11%, 99.88%, 99.42%, and 99.50% respectively. In contrast with Faster R-CNN, the precision, sensitivity, and F1-Score increase by 0.31%, 7.77%, and 4.25% respectively. The comparative experimental results demonstrate that the mean average precision (mAP) of the proposed approach is higher than that of the currently used pest recognition approaches. In addition to reducing the complexity of creating multiple recognition models for different kinds of pests, the proposed model shows promise as an effective means for recognising and monitoring of other targets with similar characteristics, thereby providing theoretical support for ecological informatics in the future.

Abstract:Specialized control of pests and diseases have been a high-priority issue for the agriculture industry in many countries. On account of automation and cost effectiveness, image analytic pest recognition systems are widely utilized in practical crops prevention applications. But due to powerless hand-crafted features, current image analytic approaches achieve low accuracy and poor robustness in practical large-scale multiclass pest detection and recognition. To tackle this problem, this article proposes a novel deep learning based automatic approach using hybrid and local activated features for pest monitoring. In the presented method, we exploit the global information from feature maps to build our global activated feature pyramid network to extract pests' highly discriminative features across various scales over both depth and position levels. It makes changes of depth or spatial sensitive features in pest images more visible during downsampling. Next, an improved pest localization module named local activated region proposal network is proposed to find the precise pest objects positions by augmenting contextualized and attentional information for feature completion and enhancement in local level. The approach is evaluated on our seven-year large-scale pest data-set containing 88.6 K images (16 types of pests) with 582.1 K manually labeled pest objects. The experimental results show that our solution performs over 75.03% mean average precision (mAP) in industrial circumstances, which outweighs two other state-of-the-art methods: Faster R-CNN with mAP up to 70% and feature pyramid network mAP up to 72%.

Use of copper oxide wire particles to control gastrointestinal nematodes in goats.

Abstract:The objectives of these experiments were to determine the optimal dose of copper oxide wire particles (COWP) necessary to reduce gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) infection in young and mature goats naturally infected with Haemonchus contortus or a mixed infection and to determine whether the effectiveness could be enhanced through feeding management. Two experiments were conducted during cooler months in Georgia, and 4 experiments were conducted during warmer spring or summer months in Arkansas. Meat goats received 0 up to 10 g of COWP under a variety of management conditions. In all experiments, blood and feces were collected every 3 or 7 d from 6 to 42 d to determine blood packed cell volume (PCV) and fecal egg counts (FEC) to estimate the degree of GIN infection. In mature goats grazing fall pasture, mean FEC of 0 g of COWP-treated goats increased, and those of 4 g of COWP-treated goats remained low on d 0, 7, and 14 (COWP x d, P < 0.03), and FEC decreased on these days (P < 0.001). In 5 and 10 g of COWP-treated goats, PCV increased (P < 0.001), but FEC and PCV remained unchanged over time in control goats. Fecal egg counts were similar among all low doses (0.5, 1, 2, 4 g) of COWP administered to weaned kids for all dates examined (P > 0.10), which were lower on d 7 through 21 (COWP x date, P < 0.05) but similar by d 28, compared with FEC of 0 g of COWP-treated kids. Packed cell volume was lower in 0 g compared with all COWP-treated kids by d 14 (COWP x date, P < 0.05). Feeding management in combination with COWP for GIN control had little effect compared with COWP alone for these short-term studies. In conclusion, a dose of COWP as low as 0.5 g, which was considered optimal to reduce the risk of copper toxicity, was effective in reducing FEC in young goats, and 5 g of COWP was effective in older goats. Copper oxide does not appear to be effective in controlling newly acquired L4 stage (preadult) larvae, which also feed on blood, leading to decreased PCV in newly infected goats.
Pest-YOLO: A model for large-scale multi-class dense and tiny pest detection and counting

Abstract:Frequent outbreaks of agricultural pests can reduce crop production severely and restrict agricultural production. Therefore, automatic monitoring and precise recognition of crop pests have a high practical value in the process of agricultural planting. In recent years, pest recognition and detection have been rapidly improved with the development of deep learning-based methods. Although certain progress has been made in the research on pest detection and identification technology based on deep learning, there are still many problems in the production application in a field environment. This work presents a pest detector for multi-category dense and tiny pests named the Pest-YOLO. First, the idea of focal loss is introduced into the loss function using weight distribution to improve the attention of hard samples. In this way, the problems of hard samples arose from the uneven distribution of pest populations in a dataset and low discrimination features of small pests are relieved. Next, a non-Intersection over Union bounding box selection and suppression algorithm, the confluence strategy, is used. The confluence strategy can eliminate the errors and omissions of pest detection caused by occlusion, adhesion and unlabeling among tiny dense pest individuals to the greatest extent. The proposed Pest-YOLO model is verified on a large-scale pest image dataset, the Pest24, which includes more than 20k images with over 190k pests labeled by agricultural experts and categorized into 24 classes. Experimental results show that the Pest-YOLO can obtain 69.59% for mAP and 77.71% for mRecall on the 24-class pest dataset, which is 5.32% and 28.12% higher than the benchmark model YOLOv4. Meanwhile, our proposed model is superior to other several state-of-the-art methods, including the SSD, RetinaNet, Faster RCNN, YOLOv3, YOLOv4, YOLOv5s, YOLOv5m, YOLOX, DETR, TOOD, YOLOv3-W, and AF-RCNN detectors. Pest Manager: A Systematic Framework for Precise Pest Counting and Identification in Invisible Grain Pile Storage Environment

Abstract:Pest infestations pose a significant risk to both the quality and quantity of stored grain, resulting in substantial economic losses. Accurate and timely pest monitoring is essential, but traditional methods are time-consuming and labor-intensive, and often ineffective at detecting pests beneath the grain surface. In this paper, we introduce a systematic framework: Pest Manager for precise pest counting and identification within the invisible grain pile environment. The framework consists of three components: an improved grain probe trap PestMoni, a pest drop dataset PestSet collected by PestMoni, and a multi-task Transformer-based architecture PestFormer for pest counting and identification. Specifically, PestMoni uses an asymmetric layout of infrared diodes and photodiodes, enabling precise recording of pest drops. Based on PestMoni, we develop PestSet, an infrared-perception dataset for pest drops, including five common grain storage pests. Furthermore, we propose PestFormer, a multi-task model with a conditional modification module to reduce deviations across different PestMonis and thereby normalize the data processing workflow. Extensive experiments validate the design, dataset, and model, with PestFormer achieving state-of-the-art accuracies of 99.2% in counting and 86.9% in identification, highlighting its potential for effective pest management in invisible storage environment.
