Abstract:Tomato is an essential annual crop providing human food worldwide. It is estimated that by the year 2050 more than 50% of the arable land will become saline and, in this respect, in recent years, researchers have focused their attention on studying how tomato plants behave under various saline conditions. Plenty of research papers are available regarding the effects of salinity on tomato plant growth and development, that provide information on the behavior of different cultivars under various salt concentrations, or experimental protocols analyzing various parameters. This review gives a synthetic insight of the recent scientific advances relevant into the effects of salinity on the morphological, physiological, biochemical, yield, fruit quality parameters, and on gene expression of tomato plants. Notably, the works that assessed the salinity effects on tomatoes were firstly identified in Scopus, PubMed, and Web of Science databases, followed by their sifter according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guideline and with an emphasis on their results. The assessment of the selected studies pointed out that salinity is one of the factors significantly affecting tomato growth in all stages of plant development. Therefore, more research to find solutions to increase the tolerance of tomato plants to salinity stress is needed. Furthermore, the findings reported in this review are helpful to select, and apply appropriate cropping practices to sustain tomato market demand in a scenario of increasing salinity in arable lands due to soil water deficit, use of low-quality water in farming and intensive agronomic practices.

Abstract:Salinity is a constraint limiting plant growth and productivity of crops throughout the world. Understanding the mechanism underlying plant response to salinity provides new insights into the improvement of salt tolerance-crops of importance. In the present study, we report on the responses of twenty cultivars of tomato. We have clustered genotypes into scale classes according to their response to increased NaCl levels. Three local tomato genotypes, representative of different saline scale classes, were selected for further investigation. During early (0 h, 6 h and 12 h) and later (7 days) stages of the response to salt treatment, ion concentrations (Na+, K+ and Ca2+), proline content, enzyme activities (catalase, ascorbate peroxidase and guiacol peroxidase) were recorded. qPCR analysis of candidate genes WRKY (8, 31and 39), ERF (9, 16 and 80), LeNHX (1, 3 and 4) and HKT (class I) were performed. A high K+, Ca2 +and proline accumulation as well as a decrease of Na+ concentration-mediated salt tolerance. Concomitant with a pattern of high-antioxidant enzyme activities, tolerant genotypes also displayed differential patterns of gene expression during the response to salt stress.

Abstract:A new formulation of Stochastic Model Predictive Output Feedback Control is presented and analyzed as a translation of Stochastic Optimal Output Feedback Control into a receding horizon setting. This requires lifting the design into a framework involving propagation of the conditional state density, the information state, via the Bayesian Filter and solution of the Stochastic Dynamic Programming Equation for an optimal feedback policy, both stages of which are computationally challenging in the general, nonlinear setup. The upside is that the clearance of three bottleneck aspects of Model Predictive Control is connate to the optimality: output feedback is incorporated naturally; dual regulation and probing of the control signal is inherent; closed-loop performance relative to infinite-horizon optimal control is guaranteed. While the methods are numerically formidable, our aim is to develop an approach to Stochastic Model Predictive Control with guarantees and, from there, to seek a less onerous approximation. To this end, we discuss in particular the class of Partially Observable Markov Decision Processes, to which our results extend seamlessly, and demonstrate applicability with an example in healthcare decision making, where duality and associated optimality in the control signal are required for satisfactory closed-loop behavior.

Abstract:Salinity soil causes a constant threat to the survival of vegetable crops, particularly tomatoes and sweet pepper. Thus, choosing adaptive or saline-bearing items is the best solution. The aim of this study was to know the mechanism of adaptation and sensitivity to saline stress during the seedling phase. So, we designed two experiments for two types of sweet pepper vegetables Capsicum annuum L. variety Marconi and tomatoes Lycopersicum esculentum M. variety Berner rose treated with three different saline concentrations 2.5-5-10 g/l of NaCl in addition to the witness. After the seedlings reached the seven-sheets stage, an anatomical study was conducted on the stems of these two species to determine the effect of saline stress on the anatomical composition of the stems. After coloring the sections with double coloring, the samples were observed. The layers thickness was measured with a special camera type OPTICA Vision Lite 2.1 (2009) which was connected to a photomicroscope and a computer. Stems microscopic study demonstrated that salinity stress significantly decreased epidermal layer, hypodermal, pericycl, vascular cambium and pith area. In addition to an increase in the endodermal layers and the cells size in general, the lack or absence of space between cells, especially in high salt concentration (10 g/l) was also noticed. The present observations indicate tested tomato variety exhibited a resistant behavior compared to the sweet pepper plant, which exhibited a semi-sensitive behavior.

Abstract:Previous studies found that non-uniform salt stress could alleviate salt damage to plants compared to uniform salt treatment. The root system of tomato was divided into two parts, including salt-free treatment (NaCl concentrations were zero in both root systems), non-uniform salt stress with a NaCl concentration of 0.1% in one side of the roots (0.1%, 0.3%; 0.1%, 0.5%), non-uniform salt stress with a NaCl concentration of 0.2% in one side of the roots (0.2%, 0.4%), and uniform salt stress (0.2%, 0.2%; 0.3%, 0.3%) treatments. Compared with uniform stress, Na+ content in leaves decreased significantly (P < 0.05). The photosynthetic capacity of plants was significantly improved under the conditions of non-uniform salt treatment, which was mainly reflected in photosynthetic rate (Pn), stomatal conductance (Gs), and transpiration rate (Tr). Under mild salt stress, the stem and leaf weight of T13 in the non-uniform salt treatment increased by 7.60%, the yield per plant increased by 2.35%, and the total soluble sugar content increased by 6.85% compared with the uniform salt treatment T22. Under moderate salt stress, the stem and leaf weights of T15 and T24 in the non-uniform salt treatment increased by 14.62% and 5.77% compared with the uniform salt treatment T33, the yield per plant increased 6.04% and 3.49%, and the total soluble sugar content increased 18.94% and 7.97%. The study on the response of tomato under non-uniform saltinity was an important supplement to plant physiology under uniform saltinity, so as to provide references for cultivation and management in salt fields.

Abstract:<p>The tomato industry has been seriously affected by continuous soil salinization and seawater irritation. This study analyzed the salt tolerance mechanism of tomato from physiological and molecular aspects and screened out the salt tolerance genes; this information provides a foundation for future research on tomato salt tolerance and environmental adaptability. In this study, tomato was used as the experimental material, and treated with seawater accounted for 0%, 10%, 20%, or 30% of the nutrient solution volume respectively. The results showed that when the seawater percentage was less than 20%, it had little effect on the growth of tomato; when the seawater percentage was more than 20%, it could severely inhibit tomato growth, thereby affecting the ion balance in plants. The results showed that 33,810 unigenes were obtained after transcriptome high-throughput sequencing and assembly. In total, 31,631 unigenes were successfully annotated by comparison of the obtained unigenes with six gene databases. According to the Gene Ontology (GO) database, unigenes in the tomato transcriptome could be roughly divided into three categories (biological process, cellular component, and molecular function) with 45 branches. Analyzing genetic differences revealed that 509 unigenes were significantly differentially expressed under seawater stress, among which 40.67% were up-regulated and 59.33% were down-regulated. Moreover, we also found that the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were mainly enriched in six pathways: growth, response to stimulus, signaling, membrane, transcription factor activity and protein binding. The expression profiles of the selected DEGs in the samples were characterized and verified by qRT-PCR. These DEGs and metabolic pathways may play an important role in salt tolerance of tomato. The functional characteristics of these genes and pathways will provide a new target for improving salt tolerance of tomato through gene regulation.</p>

Interactive Effects of Salinity and Air Humidity on Two Tomato Cultivars Differing in Salt Tolerance

Abstract:An environmentally controlled experiment was conducted in growth chambers to investigate the interactive effects of salinity and air humidity on two cultivars of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.), Daniela (relatively salt tolerant) and Naomi (relatively salt sensitive). One month after germination, the plants were exposed for 15 days to factorial combinations of two salinity levels, 0 (control) and 80 mM sodium chloride (NaCl), and two relative humidity (RH) levels, 30% and 70%. The NaCl treatment decreased the growth of cv. Naomi by 34% and 21% at 30% and 70% RH, respectively, while there was no decrease in the growth of cv. Daniela at 30% RH and only a slight decrease at 70% RH. Under NaCl treatment, cv Daniela had significantly lower Na+ concentrations in leaves and stems and a higher root-to-shoot ratio than cv. Naomi at both relative humidities. Salt tolerance of cv. Daniela may be related to its high root-to-shoot ratio and its ability to exclude Na+ from the shoot. NaCl-treated plants of cv. Daniela had a lower biomass at 70% than at 30% RH. Conversely, NaCl-treated plants of cv. Naomi had a greater biomass at 70% compared with 30% RH. The ameliorating effects of high RH on NaCl-induced growth reductions in cv. Naomi could be attributed to an increase in leaf area, root growth, photosynthetic rate, and stomatal conductance and a decrease in Cl- concentration in leaves. The overall findings of this study suggest that the growth of salt-sensitive tomato cultivars under saline conditions could be improved by increasing air humidity.
Irrigation with salt water affects growth, yield, fruit quality, storability and marker-gene expression in cherry tomato

Abstract:The use of saline water for plant production will become increasingly necessary over future decades. In some cases, fruit quality such as in tomato, can be improved by irrigation with saline water. The influence of different salt concentrations on physiological responses and the expression of some selected genes of cherry tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L), cv. West Virginia 106, was examined. Tomato plants were grown in peatmoss substrate and irrigated with 0, 25, 50, 75, 100 or 150 mM sodium chloride (NaCl) in a glasshouse. The NaCl treatments of 75, 100 and 150 mM salt resulted in shorter plants, decreased stem width, a lower plant dry weight, fewer flowers, and smaller leaf area, while yield was reduced by treatment with concentrations of 50 mM NaCl and above. Average fruit weight and fruit number were also negatively affected by treatment with 50 mM salt and above. Salinity treatment led to increased fruit total soluble solids, titratable acidity and firmness and improved the taste index. Salt-responsive marker genes identified in Moneymaker were also induced in cherry tomato but not at the highest salt concentrations. Our results indicated that cherry tomato treated with 25 mM NaCl produced fruit with improved quality in comparison with non-salinized control plants without compromising yield, while at 50 and 75 mM the improved fruit quality was accompanied by a reduction in yield.

Mitogen-Activated Protein Kinase Is Involved in Salt Stress Response in Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) Seedlings

Abstract:Salt stress impairs plant growth and development, thereby causing low yield and inferior quality of crops. In this study, tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L. 'Micro-Tom') seedlings treated with different concentrations of sodium chloride (NaCl) were investigated in terms of decreased plant height, stem diameter, dry weight, fresh weight, leaves relative water content and root activity. To reveal the response mechanism of tomato seedlings to salt stress, the transcriptome of tomato leaves was conducted. A total of 6589 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified and classified into different metabolic pathways, especially photosynthesis, carbon metabolism, biosynthesis of amino acids and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling pathway. Of these, approximately 42 DEGs were enriched in the MAPK signaling pathway, most of which mainly included plant hormone, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), wounding and pathogen infection signaling pathways. To further explore the roles of MAPK under salt stress, MAPK phosphorylation inhibitor SB203580 (SB) was applied. We found that SB further decreased endogenous jasmonic acid, abscisic acid and ethylene levels under salt stress condition. Additionally, in comparison with NaCl treatment alone, SB + NaCl treatment reduced the content of O2- and H2O2 and the activities of antioxidant enzyme and downregulated the expression levels of genes related to pathogen infection. Together, the results revealed that MAPK might be involved in the salinity response of tomato seedlings by regulating hormone balance, ROS metabolism, antioxidant capacity and plant immunity.

Abstract:Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum L.) belongs to the Solanaceae family. It is a crop of immense economic importance worldwide and salinity is one of the major abiotic factors limiting it's production and productivity globally. The amount of irrigation water and their evapotranspiration is the main reason that causes salinization. Salinity is an abiotic stress that affects agriculture by severely impacting crop growth and, consequently, final yield. Considering that sea levels rise at an alarming rate over year, it is clear that salt stress constitutes a top-ranking threat to agriculture. Among the economically important crops that are sensitive to high salinity is tomato one that is more affected by salt stress. Si plays the beneficial role of the quasi-essential metalloid silicon (Si), which increases the vigor and protects plants against a biotic stresses. The use of silicon fertilization can be used as sustainable practices in agricultural production to increase yield and quality of plants. Silicon fertilization also plays role in plant protection against various range of exogenous stresses especially, under changing environment. The use of appropriate irrigation method, amount and water quality to minimize the risk of salt accumulation around root zone of plants. Different plant growth regulators and amino acids could also play a great role in increasing yield and growth of tomato under salt stress.

Abstract:Tomatoes are crucial for global food security and agricultural economies. With over 50% of arable land projected to become saline by 2050, understanding tomato responses to saline environments is essential. Soil salinization, prevalent in arid regions, leads to salt stress. Roots are primary salinity sensors and integrate stress responses like nutrient deficiency. Understanding the molecular processes maintaining root growth is vital for crop resilience. While salt stress impacts on tomato seed germination, shoot growth, and fruit yield are documented, root development remains underexplored. Most studies have focused on a limited number of cultivars and their physiological responses, not the genetic basis of salt resilience. Wild tomato relatives, such as Solanum pimpinellifolium, offer traits that are beneficial for breeding resilient crops. However, few studies have examined the genetics of salinity tolerance in S. pimpinellifolium. This study characterizes salt stress-induced changes in root system architecture (RSA) using a natural diversity panel of 220 wild tomato accessions. We identified natural variation in lateral root development and several candidate loci through Genome-Wide Association Study (GWAS). Bulk segregant analysis (BSA) revealed 22 candidate genes overlapping with GWAS findings. Exploring root transcriptome reprogramming in two accessions with differing lateral root responses highlighted genotype-specific changes. Integrating GWAS, BSA, and RNA sequencing data identified four key genes underlying differential lateral root development under salt stress. These findings offer novel genetic targets for improving salt resilience in tomatoes, providing opportunities for future research and breeding programs to enhance crop sustainability and productivity.

The alteration of mRNA expression of SOD and GPX genes, and proteins in tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill) under stress of NaCl and/or ZnO nanoparticles

Abstract:Five cultivars of tomato having different levels of salt stress tolerance were exposed to different treatments of NaCl (0, 3 and 6 g L-1) and ZnO-NPs (0, 15 and 30 mg L-1). Treatments with NaCl at both 3 and 6 g L-1 suppressed the mRNA levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GPX) genes in all cultivars while plants treated with ZnO-NPs in the presence of NaCl, showed increments in the mRNA expression levels. This indicated that ZnO-NPs had a positive response on plant metabolism under salt stress. Superior expression levels of mRNA were observed in the salt tolerant cultivars, Sandpoint and Edkawy while the lowest level was detected in the salt sensitive cultivar, Anna Aasa. SDS-PAGE showed clear differences in patterns of protein expression among the cultivars. A negative protein marker for salt sensitivity and ZnO-NPs was detected in cv. Anna Aasa at a molecular weight of 19.162 kDa, while the tolerant cultivar Edkawy had two positive markers at molecular weights of 74.991 and 79.735 kDa.
Higher Intensity of Salt Stress Accompanied by Heat Inhibits Stomatal Conductance and Induces ROS Accumulation in Tomato Plants

Abstract:Under natural conditions, abiotic stresses that limit plant growth and development tend to occur simultaneously, rather than individually. Due to global warming and climate change, the frequency and intensity of heat and salt stresses are becoming more frequent. Our aim is to determine the response mechanisms of tomato to different intensities of combined heat and salt stresses. The physiological and morphological responses and photosynthesis/reactive oxygen species (ROS)-related genes of tomato plants were compared under a control, heat stress, salt stress (50/100/200/400 mM NaCl), and a combination of salt and heat stresses. The stomatal conductance (gs) of tomato leaves significantly increased at a heat + 50 mM NaCl treatment on day 4, but significantly decreased at heat + 100/200/400 mM NaCl treatments, compared with the control on days 4 and 8. The O2·− production rate of tomato plants was significantly higher at heat + 100/200/400 mM NaCl than the control, which showed no significant difference between heat + 50 mM NaCl treatment and the control on days 4 and 8. Ascorbate peroxidase 2 was significantly upregulated by heat + 100/200/400 mM NaCl treatment as compared with heat + 50 mM NaCl treatment on days 4 and 8. This study demonstrated that the dominant effect ratio of combined heat and salt stress on tomato plants can shift from heat to salt, when the intensity of salt stress increased from 50 mM to 100 mM or above. This study provides important information for tomato tolerance improvement at combined heat and salt stresses.

Abstract:Tomato is one of the most commonly consumed agricultural products, and the stability of its production plays an influential role in the food security of human societies. Therefore, finding solutions to reduce the risk of factors impacting tomato production could greatly help any country's economic development. During recent decades, climate change has caused the spread of salt marshes worldwide, which has affected the production efficiency and the area under tomato cultivation. Consequently, it has made scientists think about finding cheap, suitable, and minimal-risk methods for the environment to reduce the impact of salinity on tomato seedlings. Researchers have conducted several studies on the exogenous use of plant hormones in reducing salinity impact in tomato seedlings, and this study also tried to evaluate the effects of salinity stress on tomato structures (biochemical, physiological, and morphological), as well as the role of abscisic acid, salicylic acid, and melatonin hormones in tomatoes and their exogenous application in reducing salinity stress. According to the present study, the exogenous use of each of the hormones mentioned above under salinity stress conditions increases the resistance of tomato seedlings through the improvement of enzymatic and non-enzymatic animation activities, plant growth indexes, proline content, potassium ion content, K + /Na + ratio, seed germination, relative water content, photosynthetic performance, phenolic compounds, total soluble sugars, accumulation of mineral osmolytes, protein content, expression of genes related to salt tolerance, ascorbic acid-glutathione cycle, and root architecture, as well as the reduction in ethylene content, reactive oxygen species, electrolyte leakage, sodium ion content, and content of malondialdehyde. The present study also showed that salicylic acid, abscisic acid, and melatonin interact with other internal plant hormones; therefore, their use to reduce the adverse effects of salinity stress should be carefully considered.

Effects of Iso-osmotic Salt Stress on the Activities of Antioxidative Enzymes, H+-ATPase and H+-PPase in Tomato Plants

Abstract:Seedlings of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) were grown in nutrient solution to investigate the changes in malondialdehyde (MDA) and proline content, and activities of antioxidative enzymes, plasmalemma H(+)-ATPase, and tonoplast H(+)-ATPase and H(+)-PPase to iso-osmotic stress of Ca(NO(3))(2) (80 mmol/L) and NaCl (120 mmol/L). The results indicated that both Ca(NO(3))(2) and NaCl stress significantly increased superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) activities in leaf cytosols and chloroplasts. The extent of increase caused by NaCl was higher than that by Ca(NO(3))(2). The activities of SOD, CAT and APX in mitochondria were increased under Ca(NO(3))(2) stress and decreased under NaCl stress. Salt stress enhanced the activities of plasmalemma H(+)-ATPase, tonoplast H(+)-ATPase and H(+)-PPase. The increases in tonoplast H(+)-ATPase and H(+)-PPase activity were much higher under Ca(NO(3))(2) stress than under NaCl stress. The MDA and proline content increased under salt stress, especially under NaCl stress. From the results, it can be concluded that both salt inhibited the plant growth, the effect of NaCl being much heavier.
Revealing the effects of amino acid, organic acid, and phytohormones on the germination of tomato seeds under salinity stress

Abstract:Salinity accumulation poses a threat to the production and productivity of economically important crops such as tomatoes ( Solanum lycopersicum L.). Currently, salt tolerance breeding programs have been limited by insufficient genetic and physiological knowledge of tolerance-related traits and a lack of an efficient selection domain. For that purpose, we aimed to determine the ability of tomato cultivars to tolerate salt based on seed traits by multiple biochemical pathways. First, we tested three tomato cultivars according to their response to different sodium chloride (NaCl) concentrations (0, 6.3, 9.8, 13.0, and 15.8 dS m −1 ) and then we analysed their amino acids, organic acids, and phytohormones. Considering the results of germination traits, it is possible to conclude that cultivar H-2274 was more tolerant to salt stress than others. As a result, multivariate discriminant analysis including principal component analysis and two-way hierarchical clustering analyses were constructed and demonstrated that tomato cultivars were separated from each other by the amino acid, organic acid, and phytohormone contents. Considering germination traits of tomato seeds, cv. 'H-2274' was more tolerant to salinity than others depending on high proline (29 pmol μl −1 ) and citric acid (568 ng μl −1 ) assays. Biochemical variability offers a valuable tool for investigating salt tolerance mechanisms in tomatoes, and it will be appreciated to find high-tolerant tomato cultivar(s) to saline conditions. Also, the findings of this study have significant potential for practical applications in agriculture, particularly in developing salt-tolerant tomato cultivars to enhance productivity in saline environments and address socio-economic challenges.

Abstract:□ Growth and nutrient acquisition of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum L.) cv ‘Amani’ were studied under induced salt stress in Hoagland's solution. The plants were treated for 37 days with salinity induced by incorporating different concentrations [0.0 (control), 50, 100, 150, or 200 mM] of sodium chloride (NaCl) to the nutrient solution. Slight reduction was obtained in growth represented by (shoot length and number, leaf number, and dry weight) when seedlings were directly exposed to NaCl stress from 0.0 to 100 mM. At higher concentrations (150 or 200 mM), growth parameters were adversely affected and seedlings died thereafter. Elevated salinity significantly reduced crude protein and fiber in shoots and roots. Tomato shoot and root contents of potassium (K), iron (Fe), and ash were reduced significantly in response to increased levels of salinity. Tissue contents of sodium (Na) and chloride (Cl) increased with elevated salinity treatments.

Abstract:Climate change and abiotic stress challenges in crops are threatening world food production. Among others, salinity affects the agricultural sector by significantly impacting yield losses. Plant biostimulants have received increasing attention in the agricultural industry due to their ability to improve health and resilience in crops. The main driving force of these products lies in their ability to modulate plant metabolic processes involved in the stress response. This study's purpose was to investigate the effect of two biostimulant products, including a protein hydrolysate (Clever HX ® ) and a seaweed extract with high amino acids content (Ascovip ® ), and their combination, on the metabolomics profile of tomato crops grown under salt stress (150 mM NaCl). Several stress indicators (leaf relative water content, membrane stability index, and photosynthesis activity) and leaf mineral composition after salinity stress exposure were assessed to evaluate stress mitigation, together with growth parameters (shoot and root biomasses). After that, an untargeted metabolomics approach was used to investigate the mechanism of action of the biostimulants and their link with the increased resilience to stress. The application of the biostimulants used reduced the detrimental effect of salinity. In saline conditions, protein hydrolysate improved shoot dry weight while seaweed extracts improved root dry weight. Regarding stress indicators, the application of the protein hydrolysate was found to alleviate the membrane damage caused by salinity stress compared to untreated plants. Surprisingly, photosynthetic activity significantly improved after treatment with seaweed extracts, suggesting a close correlation between root development, root water assimilation capacity and photosynthetic activity. Considering the metabolic reprogramming after plant biostimulants application, protein hydrolysates and their combination with seaweed extracts reported a distinctive metabolic profile modulation, mainly in secondary metabolite, lipids and fatty acids, and phytohormones biosynthetic pathways. However, treatment with seaweed extract reported a similar metabolic reprogramming trend compared to salinity stress. Our findings indicate a different mechanism of action modulated by protein hydrolysate and seaweed extract, suggesting stronger activity as a stress mitigator of protein hydrolysate in tomato crops under salinity stress.
