Abstract:This paper illustrates the relationship between soils and vegetation in an area with a distinctive vegetation pattern near Grahamstown, Eastern Cape. Witteberg quartzite ridges in the region are clothed in a mosaic of grass-heath vegetation with patches of montane forest in the valley heads. The distinctiveness of the pattern has led a number of authors to suggest that the grass-heath is derived from the forest and that montane forest patches are relict features, the assumption being that the derivation took place in the recent past as a result of agricultural extension and intensification. An analysis of soil and vegetation relationships is undertaken from one of the larger montane forest patches, Beggar’s Bush Forest Reserve, the results indicating that soil and vegetation characteristics are intimately related in the present day and that this may entail relative stability of the vegetation boundaries over a lengthy period. The ‘Rabbit’, as it is known, may well have possessed its remarkable shape at least since European man settled the area.
A first syntaxonomic description of the vegetation of the Karstveld in Namibia

Abstract:Aims : The Karstveld in Namibia has been recognized as an area of high plant diversity. However, this area is also recognised as a hotspot of various forms of degradation including bush encroachment. Minimal baseline data on the composition and diversity of vegetation in this area is available, therefore this paper is a first attempt to rectify this data deficiency. Study area: The Karstveld in Namibia is formed around the Otavi Mountain Range in northern Central Namibia, consisting of strongly karstified carbonate bedrock, rising up to 2000 m a.s.l. The Karstveld includes the Ovambo Basin plains with shallow calcrete soils north of the range, up to the Omuramba Ovambo. Because of orographic effects, the area receives some of the highest rainfall in Namibia, with up to 600 mm per year. Methods: A set of 889 relevés with 868 species was selected from the GVID ID AF-NA-001 database. A partial data set, using trees, shrubs, dwarf shrubs and grasses only, was used for the classification with modified TWINSPAN. The initial result yielded four main groups, according to which the data was split and further classified. Several vegetation types observed during field surveys were not reflected in the classification results; these were refined using Cocktail with known characteristic species. Results: The four main units represented wetlands and grasslands with six associations, a Thornbush savanna – Karstveld transition zone with four associations, Kalahari vegetation with four associations and the Karstveld proper with eight associations. The latter are grouped together as the Terminalietea prunioides , with two orders and three alliances recognised under them. We describe 16 associations according to the ICPN. Conclusions: Although the associations presented in this paper are clearly defined, there exists a high degree of diversity within these. The Karstveld is also extraordinary species rich within the context of the arid to semi-arid Namibian environment. Taxonomic reference : Klaassen and Kwembeya (2013) for vascular plants, with the exception of the genus Acacia s.l. ( Fabaceae ), for which Kyalangalilwa et al. (2013) was followed. Fire and Montane Vegetation Dynamics Through Successive Phases of Human Occupation in the Northern Drakensberg, South Africa

Abstract:Palaeoecological evidence is compared with the existing archaeological record to understand how changing human activity, over the past two millennia, impacted fire regimes and vegetation dynamics in the Drakensberg Mountains, South Africa. Sediment cores from two wetland sites in the Cathedral Peak area of the northern Drakensberg, KwaZulu-Natal are dated using accelerator mass spectrometry to chronologically support biological proxy data. Fossil pollen analysis is used to detect changes in vegetation composition, and macroscopic charcoal to reconstruct changing fire regimes. Charcoal accumulation rates (CHAR) are used as a proxy for burned biomass, and charcoal width-to-length ratio (W/L) as a proxy for dominant fuel type, whether grassy or woody. Results indicate an increase in CHAR, coincident with the appearance of cereal-type grasses (>40 mu m) c. 550 cal BP, suggesting a change in fire regimes associated with the arrival of early agropastoralists. A notable decline in charcoal W/L at this time indicates a shift towards a more grassy fuel type. This is consistent with a seasonal shift in the timing of ignitions from high intensity late season lightning fires to low intensity early season anthropogenic fires. The latter are less damaging to woody vegetation explaining an overall shift to a more grassy fuel type. Large scale ecosystem change is evident in the colonial period, including decreased forest pollen taxa such as Podocarpus, which may be linked to colonial period logging. The increased dominance of Pteridium spores documents the invasion trajectory of bracken fern into montane grasslands in the area, which is attributed to ecosystem disturbance in the form of colonial fire suppression. The subalpine wetland clearly documents woody encroachment of the surrounding open grassland landscape during the agropastoral and subsequent colonial periods. By contrast, at the montane wetland site, these trends appear to be overprinted by local forest dynamics and recent deforestation, likely an elevation effect. Palaeoecological evidence demonstrates how changes in fire regimes and vegetation composition in the northern Drakensberg are closely tied to human activity over the past two millennia.

Abstract:The southwestern Cape Province of South Africa is the core region of the Cape Floristic Kingdom, one of six such large-scale phytogeographical units and by far the smallest. The region possesses one of the richest plant communities in the world when measured in terms of plant species numbers per unit area and many different hypotheses have been advanced in order to explain this prolific diversity. Historical processes and evolutionary development through time are frequently invoked as explanations, but remarkably little is known of the historical biogeography of the region and fossil-bearing sediments have yielded only a fragmented picture of the temporal development of the flora. Late Quaternary terrestrial sediments offer an opportunity to investigate the more recent history of the flora, although here too there exist several constraints which limit the precision of palaeoecological and palaeoenvironmental reconstructions. For the moment, knowledge of late Quaternary vegetation history is restricted to upland sites of organic sediment accumulation, although an increasingly detailed picture of vegetation development against a backdrop of environmental changes is emerging. This paper reviews the evidence from several fossil pollen-bearing sediments in the mountains of the southwestern Cape and presents a vegetation history for the last 14,500 years. We draw the somewhat surprising conclusion of relative vegetation stability during the time of marked climatic and environmental dynamism elsewhere. The hypothesis that assumed limited vegetation change could be a consequence of high species richness coupled with low pollen identification resolution is tested using multiple-discriminant analysis. It is argued that apparently subtle shifts in vegetation community patterns did indeed prevail during the late Quaternary. This possibly has some important implications for the evolution and maintenance of high plant species diversity in the Cape Floristic Region.
Periglacial landforms in the high Drakensberg, Southern Africa: morphogenetic associations with rock weathering rinds and shrub growth patterns

Abstract:Here, we aim to establish possible morphogenetic associations between periglacial phenomena (sorted circles and turf-/stone-banked lobes) by examining (a) rock surface weathering rinds by thin section microscopy and SEM-EDX analysis, and (b) alpine shrub growth patterns of Helichrysum trilineatum supported by AMS 14C age determination. The study area is the Mafadi–Njesuthi summit zone, one of the highest alpine regions of southern Africa. Rock weathering results indicate that clasts in large sorted circle centres experience high chemical weathering rates on both exposed (upper) and non-exposed (lower) surfaces, whereas clasts in lobes and very large apparently 'relict' sorted circles have been inactive for a prolonged period of time, based on strongly contrasting weathering rates on both exposed and non-exposed clast surfaces. Large sorted circles originating from a previous (possibly Last Glacial Maximum or late-glacial) colder period are still marginally or episodically active, thus restricting plant succession on these landforms. Even where very large sorted circles and turf-/stone-banked lobes are inactive, their legacy continues, as expressed in today's surface morphology, and still influence ground abiotic conditions through the generation of microrelief and microclimate which in turn have impacts on ecosystem patterns including the distribution of H. trilineatum. Such shrub growth patterns are influenced by microscale site morphology, associated abiotic controls, and ongoing seasonal cryogenic activity. Both active and inactive periglacial landforms on highest summits of the Drakensberg represent microscale environments with distinct fine-scale abiotic and geomorphic settings, which in turn are manifested through differences in plant ecology and rock surface weathering, respectively.

Abstract:The vegetation of the Riversdale coastal plain was classified and described using Campbell's (1985) approach. Data collected included a subset of Campbell's structural and higher taxon characters, as well as dominant (> 10% cover) species, which would enable the recognition of communities to at least the subseries level in his hierarchy. The classification was produced using the Braun-Blanquet method of table sorting. Twenty zonal communities, at various hierarchical levels, were recognized and mapped. Non-fynbos communities included Afromontane Forest, Eastern Forest and Thicket, Kaffrarian Succulent Thicket and Dune Thicket Series in the Forest and Thicket Group, and Renoster Shrubland. Fynbos communities were Mesotrophic Grassy Fynbos, three subseries of Asteraceous Fynbos (Mesotrophic, Dune and Oligotrophic), Azonal Restioid Fynbos, Wet Proteoid Fynbos, Dry Proteoid Fynbos and six types of Mesic Proteoid Fynbos. The vegetation types could all be integrated into Campbell's Fynbos Biome mountain vegetation concepts and modifications based on work on the Agulhas plain. The mapped communities are adequate for conservation planning and comprise an essential descriptive basis for future studies. The data on Proteaceae cover corresponds well to that of the Restionaceae for Proteoid Fynbos - together the two families comprise the only groups which could be used for a classification without requiring extensive floristic studies.

Abstract:Despite their strategic importance as biodiversity hotspots and water sources, montane ecosystems are among the most neglected conservation areas. In particular, the monitoring and management of invasive alien plants in this critical biome is limited. This study presents an analysis of long‐term invasive alien plant removal within montane grassland ecosystems, drawing on insights from 25 years of the Working for Water (WfW) program on the northern Drakensberg Escarpment. We assessed the response of vegetation communities to invasive alien plant removal in this region. Using data from the WfW program on clearance activities, expenditure, and re‐visit times, we compared plant species richness, diversity, and composition in sites managed under the WfW program to adjacent patches of pristine vegetation. Results showed minimal variation in species richness between cleared sites and unmanaged sites. However, these vegetation communities remain distinctly dissimilar across sites. These findings suggest the need for active restoration of montane vegetation communities if they are to return to their natural condition and further highlight the need to conserve the remaining habitats for critically endangered species, even in their depauperate state.

Abstract:This paper offers a review and reassessment of the biogeography of the Afromontane region. Much of the montane vegetation of Africa, especially in the southern part of its distribution (the southern Afromontane region) is characterized by a mosaic of forest 'islands' in a 'sea' of grassland, with or without heathland elements. Controversy has arisen as to the origin of these grasslands and the view has emerged, based on a variety of phytogeographical, zoogeographical, ecological, pedological and historical evidence, that the grassland element has been derived, or at least markedly extended, in the recent past by forest clearance through human agency. An alternative hypothesis holds that the grassland is a much older component of the Afromontane landscape. The paper assesses these two opposing viewpoints in the light of published palaeoecological and biogeographical evidence not previously brought to bear on the problem of Afromontane grassland origins in general. The physical environment and vegetation of the southern Afromontane.region is reviewed and the suggestions put forward to account for the widespread occurrence of grasslands in the region are presented. The competing hypotheses are then tested against data on plant species richness and diversity from a number of upland areas within the region and against published Quaternary palynological data from the Nyika Plateau, Malawi, the Inyanga Mountains, Zimbabwe and the Winterberg Escarpment area of South Africa. The resulting reassessment offers strong support for the idea that the grasslands have been prominent in the southern Afromontane region since before the permanent occupation of the mountains by people. Environmental changes, especially of the late Quaternary, are suggested as having been important in establishing the vegetation pattern and, while increased magnitude of human impact in recent times is apparent, the so-called 'relict' nature of montane forest patches is questionable. It is argued that the southern Afromontane grasslands are themselves relict from a time, around the last glacial maximum, when the climatic conditions were more suited to these formations than to forest.

Abstract:The study explores topography and vegetation changes in the Cradle Nature Reserve's landscape, which is characterised by interconnected water infiltration and drainage patterns with geological features such as sinkholes, using indices such as the Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI), the Topographic Position Index (TPI), the Topographic Ruggedness Index (TRI), and the Topographic Wetness Index (TWI). The high-resolution satellite images, including Sentinal-2A, the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission Digital Elevation Model, and NASSA Power Rainfall, Temperature, and Ground Wetness in the Root Zone-Modern Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications, Version 2 (MERRA-2), were analysed using advanced statistical models. The software tools Stata/SE v.13.1, QGIS v.3.36, and ArcGIS desktop v. 10.8.2 were utilised for this analysis. The results emphasise the significance of incorporating topography into ecological research and highlight the necessity of focused conservation initiatives to address habitat suitability and erosion risk in challenging landscapes. Specifically, the results show that the Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) has a strong negative correlation with the Topographic Position Index (TPI) (R 2 = 0.95), indicating that TPI usually decreases as EVI increases. This relationship is influenced by landscape features such as sinkholes and depressions, which impact plant health. Additionally, the strong positive relationship between EVI and percentage slope gradient (R 2 = 0.85) offers valuable insights for environmental studies and land management practices. Additionally, TRI shows a negative correlation with EVI (R 2 = 0.94), emphasising the impact of terrain ruggedness on vegetation density. TWI analysis strongly correlates with slope gradients (R 2 = 0.96), highlighting topography's role in hydrological dynamics. Despite these insights, we acknowledge limitations such as scale dependency and the inability to capture fine terrain details. Integrating topographic information into ecological assessments and land management strategies is crucial for promoting conservation, sustainable practices, landscape ecology understanding, and biodiversity preservation decision-making.

Mountains of the Mist: A first plant checklist for the Bvumba Mountains, Manica Highlands (Zimbabwe-Mozambique)

Abstract:The first comprehensive plant checklist for the Bvumba massif, situated in the Manica Highlands along the Zimbabwe-Mozambique border, is presented. Although covering only 276 km2, the flora is rich with 1250 taxa (1127 native taxa and 123 naturalised introductions). There is a high proportion of Orchidaceae and Pteridophyta, with both groups showing a higher richness than for adjacent montane areas, which may be due to the massif's relatively high moisture levels as a result of frequent cloud cover. However, in contrast to other mesic montane regions in southern Africa, there are relatively few near-endemic or range-restricted taxa: there is only one local endemic, Aeranthes africana, an epiphytic forest orchid. This is likely to be an effect of the massif having limited natural grassland compared to forest, the former being the most endemic-rich habitat in southern African mountains outside of the Fynbos Biome. Six other near-endemic taxa with limited distribution in this portion of the Manica Highlands are highlighted. The high number of invasive species is probably a result of diverse human activities in the area. The main species of concern are Acacia melanoxylon, a tree that is invading grassland and previously cultivated land, the forest herb Hedychium gardnerianum which in places is transforming forest understorey with an adverse effect on some forest birds, and the woody herb Vernonanthura polyanthes which invades cleared forest areas after fire. Future botanical work in the massif should focus on a more detailed exploration of the poorly known Serra Vumba on the Mozambican side and on the drier western slopes. This will allow for a more detailed analysis of patterns of endemism across the Manica Highlands.
Substantial Insect Herbivory in a South African Savanna‐Forest Mosaic: A Neglected Topic

Abstract:Our work represents a rare study of insect herbivory across a large national park, the Hluhluwe‐iMfolozi Park (900 km2) in South Africa. This study not only connects insect herbivory to key and typical savanna drivers: rainfall, abundances of mammals and fire frequencies, but also examines the impact of two insect feeding guilds (chewers and miners). Furthermore, the study correlates total herbivory and herbivory by feeding guilds to three distinct biomes in savanna‐forest mosaic, individual woody plant species, and their respective traits. Insect herbivory plays a crucial role in shaping plant communities in many terrestrial ecosystems. However, in African savannas, insect herbivory has been relatively understudied compared to large mammalian herbivory. In this study, we examined the impact of insect herbivory, focusing on leaf chewers and miners, in a South African savanna‐forest mosaic (including patches of forest, thicket and savanna) in Hluhluwe iMfolozi Park, South Africa. Our investigation spanned gradients of rainfall, fire frequency and mammal density. We surveyed a total of 864 woody plants from 48 plant species in 38 plots. Insects consumed 6% of leaf biomass, which is comparable to their impact in temperate broadleaf forests, but the extent of herbivory damage varied between vegetation types. Overall, leaf loss was 70% higher in forests and savanna than that in thicket. Plants in the forests experienced greater damage from chewing insects, whereas miners caused relatively more damage in savannas. Rates of insect herbivory also varied among plant species, declining with carbon and dry matter content but increasing with specific leaf area. Although no significant trade‐off was detected between insect and mammal herbivory, plant species with limited physical defences against mammals tended to experience high levels of insect herbivory. Our findings highlight the intricate dynamics of insect herbivory in different vegetation types and suggest that insect leaf herbivory, alongside mammalian herbivory, could play a significant role in influencing plant community composition and overall savanna ecosystem functioning.

Late Quaternary Vegetation History of the Nyika Plateau, Malawi

Abstract:Pollen analysis of peat sediments found in valley-head 'dambos' of the Nyika Plateau, Malawi, has yielded a vegetation history spanning the last 5000 years as indicated by radiocarbon dating. The contemporary vegetation pattern of small patches of montane forest in a sea of montane grassland is shown to have been in existence for at least as far as the peat record extends and indications from a radiocarbon dated organic clay further suggest its prominence as far back as 12,000 years B.P. Assertions that the plateau was mainly forested as recently as 1000 years ago are refuted by the palynological evidence. The somewhat surprising conclusion of relative environmental stability during the Holocene in this part of Africa is supported by similar evidence from elsewhere within the region.
Modelling Land Use in The Gold Belt Territories of Iron Age Southern Zambezia

Abstract:Throughout the world, the entanglement of humans and landscapes varies from area to area depending on the time scale. In southern Africa, the impact of humanity on the physical environment is largely discussed in the context of modern rural and urban societies, and, usually, most contributions come from human geography, agriculture, and earth sciences. Very limited research is usually extended into the deep past, yet the archaeological record is replete with valuable information that gives a long-time depth of past human land use practices. Consequently, the contribution of the physical environment to the development of complexity over time remains poorly understood in most parts of Iron Age (CE 200–1900) southern Zambezia, particularly in Mberengwa and other gold-belt territories that have often received cursory research attention. What remains obscured is how did inhabitants of these gold-belt territories transform their landscapes in the long and short-term and how did these transformations intersect with their everyday lives? In this study, we combined archaeological, historical, and anthropological data of the Zimbabwe tradition societies that lived in ancient Mberengwa to probe these issues. The preliminary outcome suggests that despite vulnerability to high temperatures, tsetse-flies, and low rainfall, Later Iron Age societies that inhabited this gold belt territory were innovative risk-takers who successfully adapted a mix of land use practices to achieve longevity in settlement and prosperity in agropastoralism, mining, crafting, and much more. This proffers useful lessons on sustainable land use. Hopefully, with modification to suit the present, such solutions may help policy makers and modern societies living in similar environments to combat current global challenges related to environmental change.

A rat model for studying the intestinal circulation.

Abstract:A preparation is described that allows for whole-organ studies on the rat intestinal microcirculation. The preparation is an in situ autoperfused segment of small intestine. An arterial perfusion circuit is established between the carotid and superior mesenteric arteries and a venous circuit between the superior mesenteric and jugular veins. This model allows for measurements of superior mesenteric arterial and venous pressures, blood flow, arteriovenous oxygen difference, lymph flow, capillary pressure, capillary reflection coefficient, and the capillary filtration coefficient. Preliminary studies using this model indicate a resting blood flow of approximately 120 ml X min-1 X 100 g-1. Resting intestinal oxygen consumption is approximately two to three times the value reported for dogs and cats. Experiments were performed to assess the responses of the preparation to commonly employed physiological perturbations, including pressure-flow autoregulation, functional hyperemia, and response to venous pressure elevations. The observed responses are consistent with intrinsic control of resistance and exchange vessels. The model should prove useful for future studies regarding the physiology and pathology of intestinal hemodynamics, oxygenation, and capillary fluid exchange.
Microbial diversity in the arid and semi‐arid soils of Botswana

Abstract:Soil microbial community structures differ by ecological zones, with the Sandveld having significantly lower alpha diversity than the Wet‐Sandveld and Hardveld. The most important drivers of microbial composition and diversity are net plant productivity (NPP) and soil pH. Furthermore, soil pH influences bacteria–fungi interactions in these soils. To date, little research has been conducted on the landscape‐scale distribution of soil microbial communities and the factors driving their community structures in the drylands of Africa. We investigated the influence of landscape‐scale variables on microbial community structure and diversity across different ecological zones in Botswana. We used amplicon sequencing of bacterial 16S rRNA gene and fungal internal transcribed spacers (ITS) and a suite of environmental parameters to determine drivers of microbial community structure. Bacterial communities were dominated by Actinomycetota (21.1%), Pseudomonadota (15.9%), and Acidobacteriota (10.9%). The dominant fungal communities were Ascomycota (57.3%) and Basidiomycota (7.5%). Soil pH, mean annual precipitation, total organic carbon, and soil ions (calcium and magnesium) were the major predictors of microbial community diversity and structure. The co‐occurrence patterns of bacterial and fungal communities were influenced by soil pH, with network‐specific fungi–bacteria interactions observed. Potential keystone taxa were identified for communities in the different networks. Most of these interactions were between microbial families potentially involved in carbon cycling, suggesting functional redundancy in these soils. Our findings highlight the significance of soil pH in determining the landscape‐scale structure of microbial communities in Botswana's dryland soils.

Abstract:The mid-Paleozoic colonization of land by plants induced profound changes in the Earth's surface environments. However, it remains poorly understood how the earliest vascular plants, arising during the Silurian and Devonian periods, adapted to and functioned in ancient drylands. Today, drylands occupy similar to 45% of the Earth's land surface and support diverse ecosystems forming the Earth's most extensive biome. By contrast, only sparse records of dryland systems have been documented from Silurian-and Devonian-aged deposits, and furthermore, in most cases, the evidence for recognizing major plant types is compromised by poor preservation potential of organic matter in such dry environments. Here, we recognize an Early Devonian dryland river system represented by the Guijiatun Formation, Qujing, Yunnan, South China, based on an integrative study combining paleopedology, geochemistry, and paleobotany. This formation contains diverse and abundant redbed calcareous paleosols, most being classified as Calcisols. Such paleosols are interpreted as developing within well-drained landscapes that experienced a semiarid climate with seasonal wet-dry cycles, and are geochemically characterized by the sub-surface accumulation and reorganization of pedogenic carbonates. Extensive plant traces are preserved in most of the paleosols observed in the Guijiatun Formation and show K-or H-shaped branching structures that are morphometrically comparable to the belowground rhizomes of zosterophyllopsids and early lycopsids. These plant-bearing paleosols provide direct evidence for the development of primitive vegetation on drylands. The soil inorganic carbon (SIC) contents stored as Ca-Mg carbonates in the Guijiatun paleosols are estimated at 38 +/- 8 g C kg(-1), comparable to the highest levels of present-day dryland ecosystems. We argue that dryland floras could have been a significant component of the Early Devonian landscapes, controlling the retention of both mobile elements (Ca and Mg) and fine-grained sediment on land, and mantling and protecting buried soil carbon against erosion.
Sustainability of Livestock Farming in the Communal Lands of Southern Namibia

Abstract:The impacts of livestock farming in southern Namibia's communal areas are investigated. Small stock farming is ubiquitous in this semiarid region, and provides many people with their only source of wealth and income. It is traditionally thought that livestock grazing negatively impacts on the vegetation resource. Using both interviews and interpretation of sequential aerial photographs, veld (a South African word descriptive of the general vegetation and soils within an area) resilience and changes in vegetation composition and cover were analysed. Results provide contrasting evidence. Resilience is illustrated by good plant regeneration after the 1999–2000 rainy season, an observation that provides support for a disequilibrium interpretation of the landscape, suggesting that productivity here is primarily event driven and not unduly impacted by grazing pressure. Additional, contradictory, results show that vegetation composition has indeed changed in the communal lands, from predominantly palatable perennials to unpalatable annuals. Localized areas of degradation are also evident. Using sequential aerial photography, comparison of land units under commercial tenure (1970) with the situation subsequent to incorporation into Namaland (1998) indicates an increase in bare soil from 6.3 to 11 per cent over the time period in question. This increase is attributed to, among other factors, increased pressure form livestock grazing. Although separating anthropogenic factors from other biophysical ones is difficult, it is argued that appropriate management practices should be employed that take into account both the veld's resilience and the observed localized degradation and species composition changes. Large herbivores promote habitat specialization and beta diversity of African savanna trees

Abstract:Edaphic variation in plant community composition is widespread, yet its underlying mechanisms are rarely understood and often assumed to be physiological. In East African savannas, Acacia tree species segregate sharply across soils of differing parent material: the ant-defended whistling thorn, A. drepanolobium (ACDR), is monodominant on cracking clay vertisols that are nutrient rich but physically stressful, whereas poorly defended species such as A. brevispica (ACBR) dominate on nutrient-poor but otherwise less-stressful sandy loams. Using a series of field experiments, we show that large-mammal herbivory interacts with soil properties to maintain this pattern. In the absence of large herbivores, transplanted saplings of both species established on both soil types. Browsers strongly suppressed survival and growth of ACDR saplings on sandy soil, where resource limitation constrained defensive investment. On clay soil, ACBR saplings established regardless of herbivory regime, but elephants prevented recruitment to maturity, apparently because trees could not tolerate the combination of biotic and abiotic stressors. Hence, each tree species was filtered out of one habitat by browsing in conjunction with different edaphic factors and at different ontogenetic stages. Browser abundance was greater on sandy soil, where trees were less defended, consistent with predicted feedbacks between plant community assembly and herbivore distributions. By exploring two inversely related axes of soil "quality" (abiotic stress and nutrient content), our study extends the range of mechanisms by which herbivores are known to promote edaphic specialization, illustrates how the high cost of a protection mutualism can constrain the realized niche of host trees, and shows that large-scale properties of savanna ecosystems are shaped by species interactions in cryptic ways that mimic simple abiotic determinism. These results suggest that ongoing declines in large-herbivore populations may relax spatial heterogeneity in plant assemblages and reduce the beta diversity of communities.

Abstract:Recent biological surveys of ancient inselbergs in southern Malawi and northern Mozambique have led to the discovery and description of many species new to science, and overlapping centres of endemism across multiple taxa. Combining these endemic taxa with data on geology and climate, we propose the 'South East Africa Montane Archipelago' (SEAMA) as a distinct ecoregion of global biological importance. The ecoregion encompasses 30 granitic inselbergs reaching > 1000 m above sea level, hosting the largest (Mt Mabu) and smallest (Mt Lico) mid-elevation rainforests in southern Africa, as well as biologically unique montane grasslands. Endemic taxa include 127 plants, 45 vertebrates (amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals) and 45 invertebrate species (butterflies, freshwater crabs), and two endemic genera of plants and reptiles. Existing dated phylogenies of endemic animal lineages suggests this endemism arose from divergence events coinciding with repeated isolation of these mountains from the pan-African forests, together with the mountains' great age and relative climatic stability. Since 2000, the SEAMA has lost 18% of its primary humid forest cover (up to 43% in some sites)—one of the highest deforestation rates in Africa. Urgently rectifying this situation, while addressing the resource needs of local communities, is a global priority for biodiversity conservation.

The vegetation of Holocene coastal dunes of the Cape south coast, South Africa

Abstract:The vegetation of calcareous coastal dunes of Holocene age along the south coast of South Africa's Cape Floristic Region is poorly described. This vegetation comprises a mosaic of communities associated with two biomes, Fynbos and Subtropical Thicket. Previously, expert knowledge rather than quantitative floristic analysis has been used to identify and delimit vegetation units. In many areas, mapped units conflate vegetation on Holocene sand with that on unconsolidated sediments of late Pleistocene age, despite pronounced species turnover across this edaphic boundary. Despite dominance by Cape lineages and fynbos vegetation, dune vegetation in the eastern part of the region has been included in the Subtropical Thicket Biome rather than the Fynbos Biome. The high levels of local plant endemism associated with this dune vegetation and the small and fragmented configuration of these habitats, makes it an urgent conservation priority especially when placed in the context of rising sea levels, increasing development pressures and numerous other threats. Here we provide a quantitative analysis of 253 plots of the 620 km2 of Holocene dune vegetation of the study area using phytosociological and multivariate methods. We identified six fynbos and two thicket communities based on the occurrences of 500 species. Following a long tradition in Cape vegetation typology, we used the Strandveld (beach vegetation) concept as our first-order vegetation entity and identified six units based on the fynbos floras. These were, from east to west, Southeastern Strandveld, St Francis Strandveld, Goukamma Strandveld, Southwestern Strandveld and Grootbos Strandveld. Each unit was differentiated by a suite of differential species, most being Holocene dune endemics. The two thicket communities-Mesic and Xeric Dune Thicket-showed limited variation across the study area and were subsumed into the Strandveld units. We discussed our findings in terms of vegetation-sediment relationships, emphasizing the need for a greater geographical coverage of sediment ages to facilitate a better understanding of deposition history on vegetation composition. We also discussed the role of soil moisture and fire regime on structuring the relative abundance of fynbos and thicket across the Holocene dune landscape. Finally, we address the conservation implications of our study, arguing that all remaining Holocene dune habitat should be afforded the highest conservation priority in regional land-use planning processes.
