Feasibility of Fabricating PAN/TiO2 Electrospinning Nanofibers with UV Protection Property

Abstract:Introduction: The skin, can be exposed to harmful factors like ultraviolet radiation (UV). Exposure to this physical hazardous agent could be contributed to pigmentation, erythemas, early aging, skin cancer, and DNA damage. The aim of this study, therefore, was to fabricate the polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers with the UV protection property by the use of various concentrations of titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles. Material and Methods: The PAN nanofibers (10%wt) containing 0, 1, 5, 10 and 15% wt of TiO2 nanoparticles were produced using electrospinning method. The morphological propertis of nanofibers were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the functional groups were investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometer (FTIR). The UV protection property of nanofibers was studied by measuring UV transmittance as well as calculating UV protection factor (UPF). Results: The results showed that the diameter and morphological characteristics of nanofibers are different at various concentrations of TiO2 and increasing the concentration of TiO2 has resulted to an increase in nanofibers diameter. The analysis of FTIR results showed that TiO2 nanoparticles have been successfully loaded on nanofibers for UV protection purposes. The findings clarified that nanofibers loaded with TiO2 could increase the UV protection property up to 15%. Conclusion: Totally, our findings show the successful fabrication of UV-protective nano webs using TiO2 nanoparticles. the new combination used in nano matcould protect employees from UV radiation.

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are widely used in the preparation of composite functional materials with improved performance due to their unique electrical, mechanical properties and one-dimensional nanostructure. In this paper, the composite of TiO2 nanoparticles and acid-treated carbon nanotubes distributed on poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) nanofibers was fabricated by sequential treatments of electrospinning, hydrothermal synthesis and freeze-drying. The resulting ternary composite of TiO2/CNTs/PMMA, which is featured with a specific surface area of 83.2 m(2)/g, effectively photodegraded a series of dyes, such as methyl blue, Rhodamine B, Sulforhodamine B and methyl orange (MO). In particular, complete degradation of MO (10 mg/L, 100 mL) was accomplished with TiO2/CNTs/PMMA (20 mg) in 40 min under UV irradiation. Moreover, the high photocatalytic activity of the ternary composite, which is superior to that of TiO2/PMMA, did not deteriorate during consecutive photodegradation tests up to ten runs. The photocatalytic mechanism of TiO2/CNTs/PMMA has been explored. The desirable high photocatalytic activity, excellent stability and easy recyclability of the ternary composite is attributed to the introduction of CNTs and the electrospun PMMA nanofiber support.

Abstract:In this study, novel polyamide 6 (PA6)/zinc oxide (ZnO) hybrid nanofibers membranes containing of elongated-ZnO and spherical-ZnO nanoparticles were successfully fabricated using electrospinning/electrospraying method. Elongated-ZnO a higher surface area than spherical-ZnO nanoparticles do because of its unique structure, thus yielding higher performance. The novel PA6/ZnO hybrid nanofibers are smooth, bead-free, and very fine diameter (130–145 nm) which shows perfect conditions for electrospinning/electrospraying technique. The electrospun PA6/elongated-ZnO hybrid nanofibers decomposed >60 % of the methylene blue in the only short time of UV irradiation. The various morphologies of ZnO nanoparticles displayed differences in photocatalytic performance and ultra violet protection factor (UPF), and were ranked as follows: elongated-ZnO > spherical-ZnO. In addition, the increase in content of ZnO nanoparticles in nanofibers leads to higher collision among them; therefore, better UV protection properties were achieved. The novel PA6/ZnO hybrid nanofibers containing of elongated-ZnO nanoparticles with UPF=48 were fabricated. In this study established that PA6/ZnO hybrid nanofibers, specifically those with the elongated-ZnO nanoparticle, can be useful in UV protecting materials.

Enhanced Ultraviolet Shielding Performances of TiO₂ Nanorods in Different Crystalline Structures and Illite-Loaded Composites

Abstract:With deeper understanding of the harm of ultraviolet (UV) ray radiation, more and more attentions have been paid on developing UV shielding agents with better price-quality ratio. In this article, TiO₂ nanorods with three types of crystalline structures (anatase, brookite, and rutile) and their composites with natural illites were prepared by hydrothermal method under appropriate glycolic acid and pH environment. The resultant samples were analyzed by XRD, SEM, XPS, TEM, UV–vis spectrum and UV aging testing. The results confirm that both the aspect ratio and the crystalline structures of TiO₂ nanorods greatly affect the UV shielding performances of TiO₂ films. Compared with anatase and brookite, rutile TiO₂ nanorods with the best aspect ratio (around 3.5) display the best UV shielding performance. Furthermore, after loaded by natural illite micro-sheets, the illite-TiO2 composites display better UV shielding performance than pure TiO₂ nanorods, due to the physical reflection effect and interfacial coupling effect of illite micro-sheets. When the loading amount ratio reaches to 1:1, the illite-TiO2 composite loaded with rutile TiO₂ nanorods display the best UV shielding performance. And such coating is confirmed to be greatly helpful in protecting cotton fabrics from fractures caused by UV aging. The best illite-TiO2 composite can significantly increases the retention tensile strength of cotton fabrics by 47 % against UV radiation. The resultant novel illite-TiO2 composite provides a promising method to product better UV shielding agents for practical applications, which displays lower cost, nearly non-toxic, better aqueous dispersion, controlled UV–vis spectral characteristics, and higher UV shielding performances.

Abstract:Titanium dioxide is one of the best semiconductor photocatalysts available for photocatalysis. In this paper, titanium dioxide nanofiber membranes are prepared by post-anneal-assisted electrospinning process. The obtained membrane is composed of anatase titanium dioxide continuous and porous nanofibers with diameters ranging from 65 to 115 run. An optimized annealing scheme is determined. Photocatalytic measurements show that the photocatalytic efficiency of the anatase TiO2 nanofiber membrane is 72%, which is highly superior to that of the anatase TiO2 thin film (44%). It is believed that the large specific surface area intensively enhances the photocatalytic reactions and the good shape retention might be favorable for recuperability and practicality. Thermoplastic polyurethane/silica nanocomposite fibers by electrospinning

Abstract:Thermoplastic polyurethane/silica nanocomposite fibers with good mechanical properties were prepared by electrospinning, using colloidal silica as the source of silica and dimethyl formamide as the solvent. The fiber morphology was examined by field emission scanning electron microscopy. The average fiber diameter is about 0.8 mu m with 0-10 wt % silica, and silica nanoparticles were observed on all fiber surfaces. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis of Si in combination with transmission electron microscopy observation suggest that silica nanoparticles have a fairly uniform distribution in the fibers rather than enriching on the fiber surfaces. Tensile tests show that the incorporation of silica nanoparticles can bring about a significant reinforcing effect without decreasing the ductility. The reinforcing effect is further confirmed by dynamic mechanical analysis. The thermoplastic polyurethane/silica composite fiber mats can adsorb gold nanoparticles after further treatment with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane, demonstrating that the composite fibers could be used as functional fibers by using the properties of silica nanoparticles. Abstract:Titania (TiO 2 ) nanofibers were fabricated by electrospinning three representative spin dopes made of titanium (IV) n -butoxide (TNBT) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) with the TNBT/PVP mass ratio being 1/2 in three solvent systems including N,N -dimethylformamide (DMF), isopropanol, and DMF/isopropanol (1/1 mass ratio) mixture, followed by pyrolysis at 500 °C. The detailed morphological and structural properties of both the as-electrospun precursor nanofibers and the resulting final TiO 2 nanofibers were characterized by SEM, TEM, and XRD. The results indicated that the precursor nanofibers and the final TiO 2 nanofibers made from the spin dopes containing DMF alone or DMF/isopropanol mixture as the solvent had the common cylindrical morphology with diameters ranging from tens to hundreds of nanometers, while those made from the spin dope containing isopropanol alone as the solvent had an abnormal concave morphology with sizes/widths ranging from sub-microns to microns. Despite the morphological discrepancies, all precursor nanofibers were structurally amorphous without distinguishable phase separation, while all final TiO 2 nanofibers consisted of anatase-phased TiO 2 single-crystalline grains with sizes of approximately 10 nm. The electrospun TiO 2 nanofiber mat is expected to significantly outperform other forms (such as powder and film) of TiO 2 for the solar cell (particularly dye-sensitized solar cell) and photo-catalysis applications.

Abstract:1. Biliary problems remain the Achilles’ heel of liver transplantation (LT) in both deceased and living donor LT. 2. Biliary complications can be reduced by adhering to precise techniques and to sound principles of “classical” biliary tract surgery. 3. Biliary complications in donation after cardiac death LT can be reduced beneath 10% when improving recipient selection criteria and reducing ischemia times. 4. Biliary complications in living (especially adult-toadult) donor LT can be reduced using detailed prehepatectomy biliary mapping, appropriate hilar plate dissection, use of biliary drainage, and microscopic suturing techniques. 5. Interventional radiology and endoscopy both play an important and complementary role in the management of biliary complications. In the case of unilobar or diffuse ischemic biliary tract lesions, hepatobiliary surgery and/or retransplantation should be decided in a timely way in order to avoid (potentially lethal) infections.

Abstract:Uniform core-shell structured TiO2&SiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) were fabricated by synthesizing TiO2 NPs, which were then coated with shells of SiO2. The structure and optical properties of TiO2&SiO2 NPs were characterized with a transmission electron microscope and a UV/Vis spectrophotometer. The photocatalysis was evaluated by photodegradation of rhodamine B. TiO2&SiO2 NPs were coated onto wool fabrics to improve their photostability. The treated wool fabrics were characterized using scanning electron microscopy. Photoyellowing of treated wool fabrics after exposure to simulated sunlight was evaluated using a Datacolor Spectraflash spectrophotometer. At an application level of 5% o.w.f. of the composite nanoparticles, the treated wool fabrics exhibited considerable photostability. Polydimethylsiloxane was applied as an after-treatment, which provides good fastness to washing. This simple but effective coating could be useful for the development of UV protection methods for various substrates.

Abstract:The development of nanofibrous membrane with exceptional filtration efficiency, excellent mechanical properties, and high-temperature resistance poses a significant challenge in the field of industrial dust removal. Incorporating multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) into poly( m -phenylene isophthalamide) PMIA enhances the mechanical properties of nanofibrous membrane fabricated via electrospinning. However, the application of MWCNTs is limited due to their poor dispersion and self-aggregation in solvents. Herein, amino-modified MWCNTs (MWCNTs-NH 2 ) grafted with chlorosulfonated PMIA (PMIA-SO 2 Cl) nanofibrous membrane was fabricated via electrospinning. The results demonstrated that the coupling effect of PMIA-SO 2 Cl and MWCNTs-NH 2 significantly enhanced the stability of MWCNTs in the PMIA electrospinning solution, resulting in a more homogeneous dispersion of MWCNTs and a smaller average particle size (D50 = 198.03 nm). The filtration efficiency of the most penetrating particle size (MPPS) and the tensile strength of PMIA-SO 2 Cl/MWCNTs-NH 2 nanofibrous membrane were 99.990 % and 57.514 MPa, respectively. The tensile strength retention rates in 30 wt% H 2 SO 4 and 10 wt% NaOH were 52.56 % and 80.25 %, respectively. The MWCNTs-NH 2 /PMIA-SO 2 Cl nanofibrous membrane exhibited significantly enhanced mechanical property, filtration efficiency and high-temperature resistance (approximately 250 °C) compared to the unmodified nanofibrous membranes. This study was instructive for the application of electrospinning nanofibrous membranes in the field of high-temperature dust removal.

Abstract:Herein, xylan-g-PMMA was synthesized by grafting poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) onto xylan and characterized by FT-IR and HSQC NMR spectroscopies, and the xylan-g-PMMA/TiO2 solution was used to electrospun nanofibers at the voltage of 15 Kv, which was the first time employing xylan to electrospun nanofibers. Moreover, the electrospinning operating parameters were optimized by assessing the electrospinning process and the morphology of electrospun fibers, as follows: the mixed solvent of DMF and chloroform in a volume ratio of 5:1, an anhydroxylose unit (AXU)/MMA molar ratio lower than 1:2, the flow speed of 0.00565–0.02260 mL/min, and a receiving distance of 10–15 cm. Diameters of the electrospun fibers increased with increasing DMF content in the used solvent mixture, MMA dosage, and receiving distance. TiO2 nanoparticles were successfully dispersed in electrospun xylan-g-PMMA nanofibers and characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray diffraction spectrum, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and their application for methylene blue (MB) degradation presented above 80% photocatalytic efficiency, showing the good potential in water treatment.

Abstract:The formulation of optoelectronic components into 1D nanostructures allows the promotion of new materials with multifunctionalities. In this work, it is demonstrated that new synthesis of photocatalytic carbon nanofiber decorated with semi-embedded titanium oxide (TiO2), namely, TiO2@carbon fiber, is conveniently accessed through the electrospinning of polyacrylonitrile polymer and TiO2 particle comixture, and then followed by photon-activated self-erosion to expose the embedded TiO2 and carbonization. The hybrid nanofibers are characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction analysis. Furthermore, the photocatalytic activities of the resultant fibers are tested with photodegradation of Rhodamine B in aqueous solution, which reveals that the carbon nanofiber with semi-embedded TiO2 drastically improved catalytic efficiency and recyclability, comparing to those fibers without or with embedded TiO2.

Abstract:The electrospinning technique was used successfully to fabricate poly (vinylalcohol) (PVA) nanofibers containing tungsten oxide nanoparticles (NPs). The tungsten oxide NPs/PVA composite nanofibers were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurement, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier-transform-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and Atomic force microscopy (AFM). The microstructure parameters of as–spun tungsten oxide NPs/PVA nanofibers were also presented by the Williamson-Hall method and Variance analysis. The average diameters of the electrospun PVA fibers with 10 wt% and 15 wt% tungsten oxide obtained from the SEM analysis were about 125 ± 15 and 165 ± 30 nm, respectively. The photocatalytic activities of the electrospun nanofibers were examined by photocatalytic discoloration rate of methylene blue in the presence of H2O2 and aqueous solution PH under ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation. It was observed that tungsten oxide NPs/PVA nanofibers exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity in decolourization of aqueous solution of methylen blue in presence of 0.1 M H2O2. Decolourization rate about 10.5 × 10−3 min−1, was obtained for the PVA nanofibers containing 15 wt% tungsten nanoparticles with H2O2 compared with the samples without catalyst.

Abstract:Electrospinning is a simple technique that has been largely used in the fabrication of nanofibers for a vast number of applications. In this work, we studied the formation of fibers containing polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), colloidal titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles, and ethyl alcohol as solvent. Titanium dioxide presents electrical, electrochemical, and catalytic properties that find several relevant applications. Fibers were formed using conventional electrospinning and, also, a non-conventional setup that uses a collector that consists of two connected parallel conducing wires separated by centimeters. The purpose of this modification was to obtain a net of fibers formed between the two parallel wires. Using a colloidal solution with an appropriated viscosity, a netlike structure is formed between the wires of the collector, with fibers presenting a certain degree of orientation (an advantage of the proposed modification of the electrospinning setup), and with diameters in the range of micro and nanometers. The use of Energy-Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDS) confirmed the incorporation of titanium dioxide in the fibers.

Abstract:One-dimensional TiO2-PVP composite nanofibers were synthesized on the Aluminum collector using cost- effective electrospinning technique. The nanofibers were prepared at various polymer concentrations (7, 8, 9 and 10wt%) to obtain bead-less nanofibers. The structural and microstructural properties were studied using XRD, SEM, and Raman spectroscopy techniques. The optical properties were characterized by diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). XRD peaks confirmed the anatase and rutile phases of TiO2 nanofibers at 400°C and 900°C respectively. Raman frequencies also confirmed the phases of TiO2 nanofibers. The SEM results point out the polymer concentration and annealing temperature influence on the diameter of the nanofibers EDS spectrum shows effective composition of pure TiO2 nanofibers. Optical band gap calculated using Kubelka-Munk function.

Abstract:A study on the formation of titanium dioxide (TiO2)/ polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) nanofibres has been investigated in the research work. In the study, the TiO2/PVA solutions were prepared at different concentrations ranging from 1wt% to 10wt%. The PVA solution without TiO2 was used as control sample in the study. Each solution was extruded using electrospinning at different voltages to form long and continuous nanofibres. The fibres were then characterised for morphological structures, fibre diameter and membrane area. The result shows that control sample of PVA nanofibres formed beads on the fibre surfaces. The addition of TiO2 in PVA was found to reduce the bead formation. The clumps of TiO2 nanoparticles were observed and were also confirmed with the EDX mapping. In addition, the electrospinning parameters affect the formation of TiO2/PVA nanofibers. At 15 kV, the resultant fibre diameter increases from 153 ± 23 nm to 191 ± 26 nm when the TiO2 concentration was further increased from 1wt% to 10wt%. The morphological structure of TiO2/PVA nanofibres varies depending on applied voltages and concentrations used. The membrane area of TiO2/PVA nanofibers is approximately 187 cm2 for 1wt% of TiO2. From the study, it shows that an optimalconcentration to produce TiO2/ PVA nanofibers is 10wt%. At 10wt%, no beads were observed on the fibre and the TiO2 nano-particles were uniformly distributed on the membrane surfaces.

Abstract:Production and testing of multifunctional textiles. Impregnation of nano‐metal oxides can provide functional properties to textiles, like UV protection and self‐cleaning properties. These properties are quite important as they can provide protection against UV damage, help to reduce cleaning efforts, improve the ease of maintenance, and help to protect the water resources. The usage of nanoparticles improves multifunctional effects due to their high surface area. Therefore, in this study, nano‐sized TiO2 and ZnO were applied to cotton fabrics as single type or hybrids with different concentrations to reveal their effects on multifunctional properties (UV‐protection, self‐cleaning, wettability, photocatalytic activity). Also, the weight and air permeability of samples were determined to evaluate their usability. Scanning electron microscopy, x‐ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were also utilized to analyze the samples. According to the results, some samples exhibited good–very good UV protection. Up to 78.5% photocatalytic degradation of organic dye was achieved by nano‐TiO2 application. According to self‐cleaning test results, nano‐TiO2 applied samples showed yellowing after UV irradiation. Hybrid‐coated samples were more advantageous regarding self‐cleaning, especially against cherry juice stains. The staining and wettability results of the samples were in accordance. Weight and air permeability changes were acceptable to maintain the usage of the samples for clothing and other applications.

Abstract:We report herein a simple, low-cost and scalable fabrication of unique wheat grain-like textured TiO2/CuO composite nanofibers (NFs) by electrospinning. Unlike conventional surface coupling/loading of co-catalyst nanoparticles, incorporation of copper nanoparticles during the electrospinning of TiO2 NFs ensures good stability and recyclability due to resistance against nanoparticles leaching. Optimization of electrospun NFs shows that TiO2/CuO composite NFs with 2.5wt% copper nanoparticles, annealed at 500°C exhibit highly textured structure with enhanced photocatalytic H2 generation of 16.8 times higher than that of bare TiO2 NFs. Furthermore, the electrospun TiO2/CuO composite NFs demonstrate favorable photodegradation activity. The ease of tuning morphology and its heterostructure composite as well as separation and recovery of the fibrous photocatalyst after photoreaction renders immense potential to remedy global environmental and energy issues.

Abstract:Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is a widely studied material with many attractive properties such as its photocatalytic features. However, its commercial use is limited due to issues such as deactivation in the visible spectrum caused by its wide bandgap and the short lifetime of photo-excited charge carriers. To overcome these challenges, various modifications could be considered. In this study, we investigated copper doping and electron beam treatment. As-spun TiO2 nanofibers were fabricated by electrospinning a TiO2 sol, which obtained viscosity through a polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) matrix. Cu-doped TiO2 nanofibers with varying dopant concentrations were synthesized by adding copper salts. Then, the as-spun nanofibers were calcined for crystallization. To evaluate photocatalytic performance, a photodegradation test of methylene blue aqueous solution was performed for 6 h. Methylene blue concentration was measured over time using UV-Vis spectroscopy. The results showed that Cu doping at an appropriate concentration and electron-beam irradiation showed improved photocatalytic efficiency compared to bare TiO2 nanofibers. When the molar ratio of Cu/Ti was 0.05%, photodegradation rate was highest, which was 10.39% higher than that of bare TiO2. As a result of additional electron-beam treatment of this sample, photocatalytic efficiency improved up to 8.93% compared to samples without electron-beam treatment.
