Abstract:Underground construction and tunnel excavation are known to redistribute stresses and cause ground displacement. Analytical solutions for stress distribution typically break down at shallow depths or in soil masses that exhibit high spatial variability, making numerical simulations necessary. Seeking to find new geometries and excavation strategies for underground construction, we propose to look to nature for inspiration. We extract 3D digital twins of Florida Harvester ant ( Pogonomyrmex Badius ) structures from a nest cast in situ and simulate the stress and displacement fields around that nest with the Finite Element Method (FEM). Stress invariants around the main shaft are compared to those around idealized geometric representations of that shaft, i.e., helixes with a fixed pitch angle and a uniform elliptical cross-section. Helical structures made of circular cross-sections and horizontally oriented elliptical cross-sections interact in a way that reduces the risk of tension failure and distributes the shear stress more evenly. One can show that in addition to the extra stability that they offer and the lower risk of tensile or shear failure that they exhibit, helical shafts have the advantage of requiring less power to excavate than straight sub-vertical shafts.

Abstract:The rationale to anatomically repair this tendon is to restore the functional biomechanics of the shoulder. Clinical and imaging assessment are required before undertaking arthroscopy. In this way, associated pathologies of the biceps and labrum may be successfully addressed. The arthroscopic repair of the tendon implies to use suture anchors and reinsert the tendon itself over the footprint. Results after arthroscopy are comparable to those observed after open procedures.

Abstract:Underground structures/machines may undergo upward and downward movements due to construction activities or environmental changes. The ground state could be significantly disturbed by previous construction and subsequent structural movements. In this study, alternant active and passive trapdoor tests simulating the ground disturbance were conducted to explore the progressive failure of the overlying soil using a self-developed particle image velocimetry system. The evolution of load, characteristic of soil movement, propagation of shear bands, evolution of failure zones, and volumetric change behavior were obtained and interpreted to better understand the progressive failure of soil. Four typical progressive failure modes (e.g., local punching shear failure and tensile failure) corresponding to different disturbance paths were identified and compared with the classical active or passive arching mechanisms. The results showed that the degradation of the arching effect will occur, whether in subsequent active or passive state. Prediction of the load on the structure based on classical arching mechanism could significantly deviate real load. Meanwhile, a much larger surface settlement and settlement range were observed compared to that of classical active state with the same ground loss value. Further, the effect of the previous ground disturbance on the progressive failure mechanisms was interpreted by the dilative and contractive behavior of the overlying soil. This study provides a profound basis for estimation of the life-cycle load on underground structures and prediction of ground deformation in view of the ground elevation or erosion collapse caused by subsequent engineering activities and changes in the surrounding environmental condition.
Climbing, falling and jamming during ant locomotion in confined environments

Abstract:Locomotion emerges from effective interactions of an individual with its environment. Principles of biological terrestrial locomotion have been discovered on unconfined vertical and horizontal substrates. However a diversity of organisms construct, inhabit, and move within confined spaces. Such animals are faced with locomotor challenges including limited limb range of motion, crowding, and visual sensory deprivation. Little is known about how these organisms accomplish their locomotor tasks, and such environments challenge human-made devices. To gain greater insight into how animals move within confined spaces we study the confined locomotion of the fire ant {\em Solenopsis invicta}, which constructs subterranean tunnel networks (nests). Laboratory experiments reveal that ants construct tunnels with diameter, D, comparable to bodylength, L=3.5 $\pm$ 0.5 mm. Ants can move rapidly (> 9 bodylengths/sec) within these environments; their tunnels allow for effective limb, body, and antennae interaction with walls which facilitate rapid slip-recovery during ascending and descending climbs. To examine the limits of slip-recovery in artificial tunnels we perform perturbations consisting of rapid downward accelerations of the tunnels, which induce falls. Below a critical tunnel diameter, $D_s = 1.31 \pm 0.02$ L, falls are always arrested through rapid interaction of appendages and antennae with tunnel walls to jam the falls. $D_s$ is comparable to the size of incipient nest tunnels (D = 1.06 $\pm$ 0.23 L) supporting our hypothesis that fire ants construct environments which simplify their control task when moving through the nest, likely without need for rapid nervous system intervention.
Application of transarterial embolization of renal artery in rabbits with experimental hydronephrosis.

Abstract:This study was performed to validate the procedure of transarterial embolization of the renal artery (TAE-RA) using iohexol-ethanol solution in rabbits with unilateral experimental hydronephrosis and to evaluate the embolized kidney and contralateral normal kidney using B-mode ultrasonography and color Doppler ultrasonography. Experimental hydronephrosis was induced at 17 days after ligation of unilateral ureter in 13 rabbits. Renal artery embolization was performed using selective catheterization in the hydronephrotic kidney of eight rabbits and electrocardiography, oxygen saturation, body temperature, pulse, and respiratory rate were within normal ranges during procedures. Iohexol-ethanol solution was used as embolic material. Average ethanol dose for renal artery embolization was 1.4 +/- 0.7 ml/kg. There were no rabbits expired after TAE-RA and no side effects associated with regurgitation of iohexol-ethanol solution. In color Doppler ultrasonographic findings, there was no blood flow into the embolized kidneys treated by TAE-RA, however, blood flow signal was found in hydronephrotic kidney not treated by TAE-RA. Ultrasonographically, the mean longitudinal length of the embolized kidney significantly decreased at 2 and 3 months after TAE-RA. No significant difference of resistive index values was found between contralateral normal kidney of rabbits treated by TAE-RA and contralateral normal kidneys of rabbits treated with nephrectomy. We may conclude that TAE-RA with iohexol-ethanol solution is a viable alternative to nephrectomy in rabbits with unilateral hydronephrosis.
Autonomous Excavation of Challenging Terrain using Oscillatory Primitives and Adaptive Impedance Control

Abstract:This paper addresses the challenge of autonomous excavation of challenging terrains, in particular those that are prone to jamming and inter-particle adhesion when tackled by a standard penetrate-drag-scoop motion pattern. Inspired by human excavation strategies, our approach incorporates oscillatory rotation elements -- including swivel, twist, and dive motions -- to break up compacted, tangled grains and reduce jamming. We also present an adaptive impedance control method, the Reactive Attractor Impedance Controller (RAIC), that adapts a motion trajectory to unexpected forces during loading in a manner that tracks a trajectory closely when loads are low, but avoids excessive loads when significant resistance is met. Our method is evaluated on four terrains using a robotic arm, demonstrating improved excavation performance across multiple metrics, including volume scooped, protective stop rate, and trajectory completion percentage.

Abstract:Full-face excavation can be difficult when tunnels are constructed in composite soil containing oversized cobbles. To mitigate construction risks, a section of the mine-by experimental tunnel was excavated as part of the Kokhav Hayerden Pumping Storage Project in Israel. The response on the face was monitored by using the Modular Reverse-Head Extensometer technique and the extrusion mechanism was studied via FLAC3D software. To successfully model randomly-distributed granules mixed in the host clay matrix, a heterogeneous method was developed to nominate individual mesh zones by assigning rigid material properties through a random Numpy list. The behaviour of the response of the face was closely depicted by the proposed model, as compared to in-situ monitoring data. For stability analysis, a strength reduction method was used and demonstrated similar factors of safety to semi-analytical solutions, which suggested the anchor design at the mine-by section may be optimized for subsequent tunnel chainages. Despite the cobble granules limiting face extrusion in the mixed strata, it brought additional concern when granules constantly spall from the working face. This could be attributed to the loss of shear strength in the host material caused by a combination of excessive shear strain and stress relaxation during tunnel excavation.

Abstract:Tunnels and foundation pits are two separate types of excavation that are frequently used in urban settings. Excavating tunnels and foundation pits sequentially around existing pile foundations is becoming more and more prevalent as urban underground space utilization rates increase. The deformation and load transfer mechanisms of the pile group foundation under two asymmetric excavation conditions of "first tunnel, then foundation pit" and "first foundation pit, then tunnel" are studied from the perspective of the relative positions of the tunnel-pile-foundation pit based on the constant gravity model test and 3D numerical simulation. The result shows: The pile settlement of the front pile (closer to the tunnel) caused by the excavation condition of the "first foundation pit-then tunnel" is relatively larger, while the pile settlement of the rear pile (closer to the foundation pit) caused by the excavation condition of "first tunnel-then pit" is larger. The transverse tilting of the pile group caused by the excavation of the "first foundation pit-then tunnel" is relatively larger. For the front pile, the pile tip resistance generated by "first excavation-then tunnel" is about 10% greater than it was before the initial excavation, which is greater than the result of "first tunnel-then foundation pit". For the rear pile, the pile tip resistance generated by "first excavation-then tunnel" is about 85% greater than it was before the initial excavation, which is smaller than the result of "first tunnel-then foundation pit". The multiple excavation sequence of "tunnel first-then foundation pit" leads to a larger induced bending moment for the front pile, whereas a larger induced bending moment for the rear pile results from the multiple excavation sequence "first foundation pit-then tunnel".
Parametric 4d Modeling For Real-Time Visualization Of Microtunneling Operations

Abstract:The continued urbanization drives the rapid development of the infrastructure including installation of a vast underground network of pipeline systems for gas, water, sewer, power and communications. For underground infrastructure construction, the trenchless technology is environmentally friendly and is a more sustainable development solution than traditional open cut method. The lack of visual information due to the nature of underground, however, may lead up to numerous challenges including misalignment, trapping of tunnel boring machine, and damage of existing pipes. This paper describes ongoing research efforts of developing a 4D modeling technique which facilitates the application of real-time sensor data and computer 3D graphic technology to pave the way for wide adoption of trenchless technology in urban infrastructure development. In the proposed approach, the 4D views can be easily modelled and integrated with real-time site data by dragging and dropping the provided application blocks, which enables construction engineers who may not have strong software programming skills to visualize the micro-tunnelling operations in real-time 3D animation. In addition, the as-built tunnel model can be created automatically as a by-product of construction operation 4D visualization.
Model Design and Application for Excavation Face Stability in Upward Shield Tunneling

Abstract:The emerging upward shield method (USM) for constructing vertical shafts has been used in various projects, including the Midosuji utility tunnel in Japan. A scaled-down model testing system, featuring a geometric similarity ratio of 1:30, was developed specifically for studying the USM. This system incorporates sand inflow control, propulsion control, data acquisition, and water level control. It facilitates detailed observation and recording of parameters such as vertical displacement of surface soil layers, support force at the excavation face, and earth pressure within the model box. Consequently, it enables investigation into the excavation face instability process, modes, and the formation and evolution of the soil arch zone above the excavation face during upward shield tunneling. Additionally, through the application of particle image velocimetry (PIV) technology and GeoPIV-RG software v1.1, quantitative analysis of soil displacement fields during excavation face instability is conducted, capturing microscopic displacements and deformations of soil planes. This approach more accurately elucidates the accuracy of understanding the dynamic response of soil. Pre-test research using the model testing system explores the variation patterns of excavation face load displacement, vertical earth pressure within the failure zone, surface displacement, and internal soil displacement during the instability process. Analysis reveals that excavation face load variation typically progresses through three stages: rapid growth, slow growth, and descent. Moreover, vertical earth pressure shifts upward in tandem with excavation face displacement, while overall surface displacement initially shows slight settlement followed by accelerated uplift.

Abstract:Soil arching effect has been widely recognized as one of the most critical factors governing load-transfer mechanism in the design of various geotechnical infrastructures. However, most existing studies on soil arching effects are limited only to the state when soil arching effect is fully mobilized, while the knowledge about the evolution of soil arching effects with relative displacement remains largely unknown. In this study, a series of classical trapdoor tests are conducted to investigate the evolution of soil arching effects with the progressively developed relative displacement for the trapdoor problem. A particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique is employed to measure the progressive development of displacement and shear strain of soil mass. The development of slip surfaces as well as stress transfer in soil mass are studied. The observed evolution of slip surfaces in soil mass is then related to the load-displacement characteristics of the soil mass under various magnitude of surcharge during trapdoor tests. The test results indicate that the triangular and vertical slip surfaces correspond with the minimum and residual values of loosening earth pressure, respectively. Upon the experimental observations, analytical solutions are proposed to predict both the minimum and the residual values of loosening earth pressure acting on top of the trapdoor, where the deflection of principal stress axes is considered. Comparisons between the model predictions with test results are carried out. Good agreement is observed, which validates the proposed theoretical model.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Two‐dimensional analysis of tunnel design based on the convergence–confinement method, although commonly used in tunnel design, may not always be applied. For example, in squeezing grounds, if the support is installed very close to the tunnel face, three‐dimensional numerical modeling is required but is computationally expensive. Therefore, it is usually performed before or after tunnel excavation. A machine learning approach is presented here as an alternative to costly computations. Two surrogate models are developed based on synthetic data. The first model aims to assess the support pressure and the radial displacement at equilibrium in the lining and the radial displacement occurring close to the face at the installation distance of the support. The second model is intended to compute the extrusion of the core considering an unlined gallery. It is assumed a circular tunnel excavated in a Mohr–Coulomb elastoplastic perfectly plastic ground under an initial isotropic stress state. In particular, the bagging method is applied to neural networks to enhance the generalization capability of the models. A good performance is obtained using relatively scarce datasets. The modeling of the surrogate models is explained from the creation of the synthetic datasets to the evaluation of their performance. Their limitations are discussed. In practice, these two machine learning tools should be helpful in the field during the excavation phase.

Abstract:Colonies of ants can complete complex tasks without the need for centralised control as a result of interactions between individuals and their environment. Particularly remarkable is the process of path selection between the nest and food sources that is essential for successful foraging. We have designed a stochastic model of ant foraging in the absence of direct communication. The motion of ants is governed by two components - a random change in direction of motion that improves ability to explore the environment, and a non-random global indirect interaction component based on pheromone signalling. Our model couples individual-based off-lattice ant simulations with an on-lattice characterisation of the pheromone diffusion. Using numerical simulations we have tested three pheromone-based model alternatives: (1) a single pheromone laid on the way toward the food source and on the way back to the nest; (2) single pheromone laid on the way toward the food source and an internal imperfect compass to navigate toward the nest; (3) two different pheromones, each used for one direction. We have studied the model behaviour in different parameter regimes and tested the ability of our simulated ants to form trails and adapt to environmental changes. The simulated ants behaviour reproduced the behaviours observed experimentally. Furthermore we tested two biological hypotheses on the impact of the quality of the food source on the dynamics. We found that increasing pheromone deposition for the richer food sources has a larger impact on the dynamics than elevation of the ant recruitment level for the richer food sources.

A Precise Analysis of the Behavior of Pit Side Tunnels Caused by Deep Excavation

Abstract:As urbanization gathers pace, projects involving adjacent subway tunnels are increasing, thereby amplifying the need for robust tunnel protection measures. Currently, there exists a notable lack of precise analyses on the three‐dimensional (3D) deformation laws and mechanisms of tunnels affected by adjacent deep excavation. Moreover, the influence patterns of retaining wall stiffness and deep excavation depth on the 3D deformation of pit‐side tunnels remain unclear. The purpose of this research is to bridge the existing disparity by adopting the hypoplastic model, which effectively captures soil stiffness that is dependent on soil state, strain, and stress path, even at small strains, as well as soil strength, based on reported centrifuge model tests. This approach facilitates a comprehensive, precise numerical analysis of the interaction between deep excavation and preexisting tunnels located outside the retaining wall. The analysis sheds light on the deformation mechanisms and trends of pit‐side tunnels not solely confined to the longitudinal axis but extending to the transverse plane as well, while systematically examining the influence of varying excavation depths and retaining wall stiffness on key tunnel parameters, including longitudinal deformation, diameter changes, bending strains, and soil pressure distributions around the tunnels. The study reveals that if the tunnel situated outside the retaining structure lies beneath the foundation pit's base, deep excavation only slightly deforms the tunnel. However, when the tunnel outside the retaining structure is positioned above the pit's base, its deformation progressively intensifies with deeper excavation, but the growth rate has a decreasing trend. An enhancement in the stiffness of the retaining wall results in a notable decrease in the deformation exhibited by the adjacent tunnels. The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the complex responses of pit‐side tunnels to excavation activities, ultimately facilitating the design and construction of safer and more resilient urban subway infrastructure.

Walk This Way: Modeling Foraging Ant Dynamics in Multiple Food Source Environments

Abstract:Foraging for resources is an essential process for the daily life of an ant colony. What makes this process so fascinating is the self-organization of ants into trails using chemical pheromone in the absence of direct communication. Here we present a stochastic lattice model that captures essential features of foraging ant dynamics inspired by recent agent-based models while forgoing more detailed interactions that may not be essential to trail formation. Nevertheless, our model’s results coincide with those presented in more sophisticated theoretical models and experiment. Furthermore, it captures the phenomenon of multiple trail formation in environments with multiple food sources. This latter phenomenon is not described well by other more detailed models. An additional feature of this approach is the ability to derive a corresponding macroscopic PDE from the stochastic lattice model which can be described via first principle interactions and is amenable to analysis. Linear stability analysis of this PDE reveals the key biophysical parameters that give rise to trail formation. We also highlight universal features of the modeling framework that this simple formation may allow it to be used to study complex systems beyond ants.

Army Ants Tunneling for Classical Simulations

Abstract:The classical trajectory method (also called molecular dynamics) is the most widely used method for ensemble averaging and calculating rate constants of complex dynamical systems; however it has the serious drawback of not allowing tunneling. Here, we show how to include tunneling efficiently in realtime classical trajectories by using the army ants algorithm for quantum mechanical rare event sampling and partially optimized semiclassical tunneling paths based on valence internal coordinates. Three examples, HN2 dissociation and two kinds of HCOH isomerizations, are used to illustrate the tunneling method. We show that the army ants tunneling algorithm is very efficient (even lower computational costs than calculations without tunneling) and yields physically reasonable rate constants. The new algorithm is straightforward to include in any molecular dynamics package, and it allows sampling of regions of phase space that are classically inaccessible but that may lead to different products or different energy distributions than are populated by non-tunneling processes.
Learning Granular Media Avalanche Behavior for Indirectly Manipulating Obstacles on a Granular Slope

Abstract:Legged robot locomotion on sand slopes is challenging due to the complex dynamics of granular media and how the lack of solid surfaces can hinder locomotion. A promising strategy, inspired by ghost crabs and other organisms in nature, is to strategically interact with rocks, debris, and other obstacles to facilitate movement. To provide legged robots with this ability, we present a novel approach that leverages avalanche dynamics to indirectly manipulate objects on a granular slope. We use a Vision Transformer (ViT) to process image representations of granular dynamics and robot excavation actions. The ViT predicts object movement, which we use to determine which leg excavation action to execute. We collect training data from 100 real physical trials and, at test time, deploy our trained model in novel settings. Experimental results suggest that our model can accurately predict object movements and achieve a success rate $\geq 80\%$ in a variety of manipulation tasks with up to four obstacles, and can also generalize to objects with different physics properties. To our knowledge, this is the first paper to leverage granular media avalanche dynamics to indirectly manipulate objects on granular slopes. Abstract:Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) are effective tools for excavating tunnels through various soil and rock strata, especially in complex urban areas. During excavating, hazards overlooked during site investigation, such as abrupt geological changes, buried obstacles like boulders and building foundations, fault zones, and water-bearing regions, significantly increase the risks of cutter damage and tunneling accidents. Geophysical methods have been proposed during tunnel excavation to predict these potential hazards ahead of the cutter face. With the existence of a metallic TBM and subsequently installed concrete tunnel lining, the performance of electromagnetic geophysical methods such as ground-penetrating radar and DC resistivity tomography are greatly hampered, despite their success in the traditional open tunnels. In this study, we present a passive seismic method to forecast the tunneling risks ahead of the TBM cutterhead. This method uses the working TBM as the source and predicts the velocity/density changes in front of the TBM by delineating the reflected seismic energy from the noisy recordings. The key to this technology is seismic interferometry, which transforms the chaotic ambient noise into interpretable seismic profiles. We utilize beamforming and semblance analysis to extract the traveltime information from the passive records. After velocity inversion and calibration, we map the arrival-time of a reflection event to a seismic impedance interface ahead of the cutterface. To test the proposed method, we demonstrate the process on a simulated passive seismic record after laying out its theoretical foundations. We present a field application of our method where geological interfaces are predicted in real time as the excavation progresses. The field data results match well with the muck density and TBM parameters measured after excavation and hence demonstrate the applicability of our method in complex urban environments for tunneling risk reduction.

Three-dimensional tunnel face extrusion and reinforcement effects of underground excavations in deep rock masses

Abstract:The design experience and the shallow tunnel theory, which emphasize the plane strain assumption, two-dimensional (2D) strength theory, and indoor or back analysis-based parameters of rock mass, should not be directly adopted for deep tunnel design. This paper reports the development of a digital acquisition technique to quickly, automatically, and accurately obtain the in-situ strength parameters (e.g., GSI and D), followed by the establishment of a three-dimensional (3D) numerical model for deep tunneling for a typical tunnel in western China to study the 3D and nonlinear spatial effects and mechanisms during excavation with incorporation of the 3D Hoek-Brown (HB) strength criterion. The reliability and correctness of the developed methods were verified by the field monitoring data, and the results of our study showed that: (1) The deformations based on 2D strength criteria (e.g., HB and MC) and 3D criterion (e.g. GZZ) are close for shallow tunnel, but significantly different for deep tunnel because of the widely distributed plastic zone in deep tunneling, thereby indicating the obvious effect of intermediate principal stress (σ 2) on rock deformation; (2) The face extrusion deformation exhibits obvious nonlinear trends with an increasing buried depth, and the σ 3 of the core rock reflects a tensile value in deep tunnel, thereby indicating the presence of an extremely unstable state. Reinforcement could increase the overall stress inside the core rock and reduce the stress unloading effect caused by the strong disturbances of deep excavations, thereby promoting a gradual change from tensile stress to compressive stress; (3) A uniform relationship was found between pre-extrusion and pre-convergence deformations, indicating that the pre-convergence deformation of the surrounding rock could be controlled by constraining the pre-extrusion deformation of the core rock. This digital technique and such 3D HB-based (e.g., GZZ) numerical modeling may be promising for conducting the 3D forward and dynamic analyses of tunnel stability. Additionally, the core rock extrusion control can be treated as an active method to render the rock itself a natural support material and to realize its strength potential, thereby making a valuable contribution to the construction of deep and ultra-deep rock tunnels.
