Abstract:Habitat loss and fragmentation often leads to defaunation of large-bodied mammals, and their loss could trigger release from top-down control or food resource competition for small mammal seed dispersers, which in turn may affect the effectiveness of seed dispersal by altering the number of dispersed seeds or the manner in which they are dispersed. Although rodents are primary seed dispersers in habitat subjected to defaunation, changes in seed dispersal effectiveness of rodents along mammalian defaunation gradients, and empirical support for mechanisms underlying alteration of this ecological process, are unclear. We assessed the direct and indirect effects of forested area and isolation on seed dispersal effectiveness of rodents on 21 study islands with varying levels of defaunation in the Thousand Island Lake, China. We used camera sampling, live traps and semi-quantitative acorn counts to assess occurrence of large-bodied mammal species, relative abundance of small rodent species and seed crop size respectively. Seed dispersal, post-dispersal seed survival, seedling emergence, and seedling survival were estimated by tracking fates of tagged acorns and by planting acorns in exclosures. Forested area had positive indirect effects on seed dispersal effectiveness through defaunation and rodent competition for acorns, whereas isolation had negative direct and weaker positive indirect effects on seed dispersal effectiveness mediated by loss of large-bodied mammals and rodent competition for acorns. Loss of large-bodied mammals negatively affected seed dispersal effectiveness indirectly by virtue of its impact on rodent competition for acorns. Seed dispersal effectiveness exhibited a unimodal relationship with intensity of rodent competition for acorns, peaking at intermediate levels. Synthesis. Indirect effects of island attributes mediated by defaunation of large-bodied mammals on small or isolated islands appear to drive altered competition for food among rodents and decreased seed dispersal effectiveness. Altered interactions between acorns and their rodent consumers/dispersers can substantially affect oak population demography in the Thousand Island Lake system. More broadly, our findings highlight the importance to the seed dispersal process of multiple interwoven effects between habitat fragmentation and defaunation of large-bodied mammals.

Abstract:Abstract Most tropical forests are now severely degraded and their ability to recover is highly dependent on frugivores which ensure seed dispersal for most woody plants. The global collapse of large vertebrates therefore raises major concerns about tropical forest succession, but few field studies have been conducted to disentangle recruitment limitations during disrupted succession. This study took place on Réunion (Mascarenes) where all large native frugivores have been extinct since human colonisation in 1665 and where multiple invasions threaten native ecosystems. We set up 20 experimental blocks on a lava flow dated back to 1800, in plant‐impoverished post‐defaunation vegetation bordered by old‐growth forests. We assessed fecundity, seed dispersal and seedling recruitment of the complete fleshy‐fruited plant community and used Bayesian analyses to disentangle the impact of multiple factors on these key processes. In the same blocks, we sowed four native trees assumed to be disperserless to test their capacity to establish, controlling for two additional post‐dispersal limitations (seed predation and competition with invasive plants). On the flow, small‐seeded native plants were fairly dispersed but did not recruit, probably due to strong competition with invasive plants; the few native species that recruited somehow were mostly medium‐seeded plants that were still dispersed; large‐seeded plants were absent from seed rain (which shows that invasive frugivores did not replace extinct ones) and subsequently from spontaneous recruitment. Instead, some alien plants, notably the tiny‐seeded highly dispersed Clidemia hirta and the medium‐seeded Psidium cattleianum largely dominated seedling recruitment. Native plants recruited better at the forest margin, including some large‐seeded species nearby mother trees. Sown large‐seeded species were able to emerge and survive in all plots whatever the treatment, which demonstrates that dispersal loss was the primary cause of regeneration failure on the flow. Synthesis . The strong modulation of the establishment capacity of native plants by seed mass shows that invasive plants win by forfeit of large‐seeded plants after native frugivores loss. Our study emphasises the fundamental role of dispersal loss and competition with invasive plants in the disruption of ecological succession, as well as the urgency of restoring seed dispersal and strengthening biosecurity regulations.

Diversity of terrestrial mammal seed dispersers along a lowland Amazon forest regrowth gradient

Abstract:There is increasing interest in the restoration/regeneration of degraded tropical habitats yet the potential role of natural regenerators remains unclear. We test the hypothesis that the richness and functional diversity of terrestrial mammals differs between forest regrowth stages. We quantified the richness and functional diversity of eight terrestrial mammal seed-disperser species across a forest regrowth gradient in the eastern Brazilian Amazon. We installed camera-traps in 15 sites within small-holder properties with forest regrowth stage classified into three groups, with five sites each of: late second-regrowth forest, early second-regrowth forest and abandoned pasture. Species richness and functional dispersion from the regrowth sites were compared with 15 paired forest control sites. Multi model selection showed that regrowth class was more important for explaining patterns in richness and functional diversity than other variables from three non-mutually exclusive hypotheses: hunting (distance to house, distance to river, distance to town, small holder residence), land cover (% forest cover within 50 meters, 1 kilometer and 5 kilometers) and land use (regrowth class, time since last use). Differences in functional diversity were most strongly explained by a loss of body mass. We found that diversity in regrowth sites could be similar to control sites even in some early-second regrowth areas. This finding suggests that when surrounded by large intact forest areas the richness and functional diversity close to human small-holdings can return to pre-degradation values. Yet we also found a significant reduction in richness and functional diversity in more intensely degraded pasture sites. This reduction in richness and functional diversity may limit the potential for regeneration and increase costs for ecological regeneration and restoration actions around more intense regrowth areas.

Abstract:Aim Small, old-growth forest fragments generally have more small-seeded plants than large patches, due to the disappearance of large seed dispersing vertebrates. This pattern may differ for secondary forest fragments where differential migration ability rather than persistence of seed dispersers may be driving plant community assembly. In this study, we investigated the effect of habitat fragmentation on seed dispersers and plant community structure in regenerating forests. Location The Thousand Island Lake, China. Taxon Plants, birds and mammals. Methods We compiled diversity and abundance data for birds and mammals on islands in the Thousand Island Lake, China. We also surveyed the secondary plant communities and measured seed dispersal traits. Results Community-weighted mean seed size of woody plants decreased with island size. This pattern was related to compositional difference of the dispersers. We found that mammal diversity and abundance was only weakly or not related to island size; whereas bird diversity and abundance increased strongly with island size. Density of bird-dispersed plants was significantly positively related with island size. Since birds tend to disperse smaller seeds than mammals, the trend in seed size may have been a consequence of the shift in relative abundance of the two disperser guilds. Main Conclusions Differential responses of seed dispersers to habitat fragmentation may lead to pervasive shifts in the plant community structure of regenerating forest fragments. Our study highlights the importance of keeping large continuous forests in order to retain mammals and their dispersal capabilities.

Abstract:Our findings imply that vegetation restoration generates marked biodiversity benefits on native seed predator communities and their interactions. However, removing non‐native plants did not result in the elimination of non‐native seed predators, which might require targeted control measures. Our results highlight the importance of considering the effects of restoration on antagonistic interactions, in addition to those reported for pollination and seed dispersal services. Management practices should aim to control plant invasions for the conservation of native plant communities that serve as resources and refugia both for mutualists (e.g., seed dispersers and pollinators) and native insect seed‐predator antagonists, both of which benefit native ecosystem function. When non‐native species invade ecosystems, coevolved plant–animal interactions and associated ecological functions are altered, often to the detriment of local biodiversity. While mutualistic interactions can benefit from—and assist with—ecological restoration through the removal of non‐native species, community‐level changes in antagonistic interactions due to restoration are less well understood. Insect seed predators provide important ecosystem functions, but can also have antagonistic effects through pre‐dispersal seed predation which can cause fruit abortion or premature fruit drop, potentially affecting plant community composition. Here, we used a network approach and data on trophic interactions from a large‐scale field experiment to investigate the differences in insect seed predator communities between native restored sites (where non‐native plants were removed) and unrestored sites dominated by non‐native plants on the island of Mahé, Seychelles. Restored sites contained more individuals and species of seed predators (up by 81% and 50% respectively), and experienced a greater predation intensity (1.06 ± 0.53 vs. 0.27 ± 0.09), and predator specialisation compared to unrestored sites. The proportion of predated samples was similar between treatments (~14%). Beta diversity, measured as species and interaction turnover, increased at restored sites. Synthesis and applications: Our findings imply that vegetation restoration generates marked biodiversity benefits on native seed predator communities and their interactions. Abstract:Background: Forest landscape restoration (FLR), often through tree planting, is one of the priorities in many global and national initiatives for carbon offsetting as part of climate change mitigation and biodiversity conservation. However, active efforts to meet FLR objectives entail substantial costs for the procurement of planting stocks and require an experienced workforce for planting and nurturing tree seedlings. Alternatively, restoration projects can be more cost-effective and potentially may have greater biodiversity gain through assisting and accelerating natural forest regeneration. The use of perches is one of the strategies under Assisted Natural Regeneration (ANR) and is used to attract avian seed dispersers to degraded habitats for increased tree seed supply and seedling establishment. This systematic review and potential meta-analysis aim to determine the effectiveness of artificial and natural perches in promoting natural forest regeneration. Specifically, we will evaluate their effectiveness in driving seed richness, seed density, seedling richness, and seedling density. The results will synthesize available evidence on the topic, identify knowledge gaps we need filling to upscale the strategy, and inform their use in concert with other ANR strategies. Methods: The search strategy was informed through a literature scan and discussions with stakeholders and experts. A total of eight databases, which include an organizational library and a web-based search engine, will be searched using the refined search string in English. The search string was formed using keywords corresponding to the PICO structure of the research question, and its comprehensiveness was evaluated using 10 benchmark articles. The search results will be screened by the review team (composed of a primary and at least two secondary reviewers) using the set eligibility criteria at the title and abstract level, followed by the full-text screening. The screened studies will then undergo critical appraisal using the assessment criteria based on risk of bias and methods. Data from the accepted studies will be extracted to the standard data sheet for meta-analysis. Effect size (Hedges' g) will be computed to determine whether perches are effective in increasing seed dispersal and seedling establishment in degraded sites. The effect of potential modifiers relating to the landscape will be explored via mixed models.
Vertebrate seed predation can limit recruitment of later‐successional species in tropical forest restoration

Abstract:We evaluated the potential role of vertebrate seed predators in limiting recruitment of later‐successional tree species in nine forests actively restored ≥15 years prior and in four paired remnant forest fragments embedded in an agricultural landscape in southern Costa Rica. We found that vertebrate seed predators can substantially reduce later‐successional seedling recruitment in restored forests and should be considered alongside dispersal limitation and microsite conditions as factors slowing forest recovery. The effects of vertebrate seed predation on the regeneration of restored forests are not well understood because most past studies have focused on seed predation within the first few years after restoration and have measured seed removal without quantifying subsequent seedling establishment of seeds that avoid predation. Quantifying the establishment of seeds that escape predation in restored forests at later stages of regrowth is crucial for anticipating longer‐term recovery trajectories. Here, we evaluated the potential role of vertebrate seed predators in limiting recruitment of later‐successional tree species in nine forests actively restored ≥15 years prior and in four paired remnant forest fragments embedded in an agricultural landscape in southern Costa Rica. We conducted seed addition experiments with four tree species inside and outside vertebrate exclosures and used camera trapping to detect seed predators. To determine the fate of seeds that avoided predation, we also measured seedling establishment after 1 year, given that other mortality factors may compensate in the absence of vertebrate seed predation. We detected two species of birds and five species of granivorous mammals removing seeds. Seed tagging indicated that most removal resulted in predation. For three of the four tree species tested, vertebrate seed predation reduced seedling establishment. The magnitude of this effect depended on species' susceptibility to other causes of mortality during the seed‐to‐seedling transition. RESUMEN Los efectos de la depredación de semillas por vertebrados en la regeneración de bosques restaurados no se comprenden bien porque la mayoría de los estudios anteriores se han centrado en la depredación de semillas dentro de los primeros años posteriores a la restauración y han medido la remoción de semillas sin cuantificar el establecimiento de semillas que evitan la depredación. Cuantificar el establecimiento de semillas que escapan a la depredación en bosques restaurados en etapas posteriores es crucial para anticipar trayectorias de recuperación a largo plazo. Evaluamos el papel potencial de los vertebrados depredadores de semillas en la limitación del reclutamiento de especies de árboles de sucesión tardía en nueve bosques restaurados activamente ≥15 años antes y en cuatro fragmentos de bosque remanente dentro de un paisaje agrícola en el sur de Costa Rica. Realizamos experimentos de adición de semillas con cuatro especies de árboles dentro y fuera de jaulas de exclusión para vertebrados y utilizamos cámaras trampa para detectar depredadores de semillas. Para determinar el destino de las semillas que evitaron la depredación, también medimos el establecimiento de plántulas después de un año, dado que otros factores de mortalidad pueden compensar por la ausencia de depredación de semillas por vertebrados. Detectamos dos especies de aves y cinco especies de mamíferos granívoros que removieron semillas. Semillas marcadas con hilo indicaron que la mayor parte de la remoción resultó en depredación. En tres de las cuatro especies de árboles analizadas, la depredación de semillas por vertebrados redujo el establecimiento de plántulas. La magnitud de este efecto dependió de la susceptibilidad de las especies a otras causas de mortalidad durante la transición de semilla a plántula. Nuestro estudio demuestra que los vertebrados depredadores de semillas pueden reducir sustancialmente el reclutamiento de plántulas para especies de sucesión tardía en bosques restaurados y deben considerarse junto con la limitación de la dispersión y las condiciones de micrositios como factores que retrasan la recuperación de bosques.

Abstract:Animals disperse seeds in various ways that affect seed deposition sites and seed survival, ultimately shaping plant species distribution, community composition, and ecosystem structure. Some animal species can disperse seeds through multiple pathways (e.g., defecation, regurgitation, epizoochory), each likely producing distinct seed dispersal outcomes. We studied how seed traits (size and toughness) interact with disperser species to influence seed dispersal pathway and how this ultimately shapes the proportion of seeds deposited in various habitat types. We focused on three frugivorous species of duikers (African forest antelopes) in the Dja Faunal Reserve, a tropical rainforest in southern Cameroon. Duikers can both defecate and regurgitate seeds, the latter predominantly occurring during rumination at their bedding sites (or "nests"). We located duiker nests and dungs along 18 linear 1‐km‐transects to assess: (1) how seed traits affect the likelihood of dispersal via defecation versus regurgitation, (2) if defecated versus regurgitated seeds are deposited at different rates in different forest types (assessed by indigenous Baka), microhabitats, and forest structural attributes (measured by drone lidar), and (3) if these differ between three duiker species that vary in size and diel activity patterns. We found that duikers predominantly defecated small seeds ( 10 mm length), the latter including 25 different plant species. The three duiker species varied in their nesting habits, with nocturnal bay duikers (Cephalophus dorsalis) nesting in dense understory vegetation at proportions 3–4 times higher than Peter's and yellow‐backed duikers (Cephalophus callipygus and Cephalophus silvicultor). As a result, bay duikers deposited larger regurgitated seeds at a higher rate in habitats with denser understory where lianas and palms predominate and near fallen trees. This directed regurgitation seed deposition likely plays an important and unique role in forest succession and structure. This study highlights the importance of ungulate seed dispersal by regurgitation, a vastly understudied process that could impact many ecosystems given the prevalence of ruminating ungulates worldwide.

Abstract:Density-dependent non-monotonic species interactions are important in maintaining ecosystem stability and function, but empirical evidences are still rare. Rodents, as both seed dispersers and seed predators, have dual effects on plant regeneration and may result in non-monotonic rodent-plant interactions. According to the non-monotonic models, the relative positive or negative effects of rodents on seedling establishment can be measured based on the positive or negative association of seedling recruitment rate and rodent abundance. In this study, we investigated the fates of acorns of Quercus serrata by tracking tagged seeds on 21 fragmented subtropical islands in the Thousand Island Lake, China. We found that the proportion of germinated seeds of all released seeds showed a dome-shaped association with rodent abundance per seed. The proportion of removed seeds and cached seeds showed a saturated- and a weak dome-shaped association with rodent abundance per seed, respectively. Our results demonstrated a clear empirical evidence that rodent abundance per seed triggered a switch between the relative mutualism and predation in a rodent-seed system. Our study implied that the observed non-monotonic interactions between plants and animals may play a significant role in maintaining biodiversity and ecosystem function. We appeal for more investigations of the complex non-monotonic interactions in various ecosystems.
Fungi and insects compensate for lost vertebrate seed predation in an experimentally defaunated tropical forest

Abstract:Abstract Overhunting reduces important plant-animal interactions such as vertebrate seed dispersal and seed predation, thereby altering plant regeneration and even above-ground biomass. It remains unclear, however, if non-hunted species can compensate for lost vertebrates in defaunated ecosystems. We use a nested exclusion experiment to isolate the effects of different seed enemies in a Bornean rainforest. In four of five tree species, vertebrates kill many seeds (13–66%). Nonetheless, when large mammals are excluded, seed mortality from insects and fungi fully compensates for the lost vertebrate predation, such that defaunation has no effect on seedling establishment. The switch from seed predation by generalist vertebrates to specialist insects and fungi in defaunated systems may alter Janzen–Connell effects and density-dependence in plants. Previous work using simulation models to explore how lost seed dispersal will affect tree species composition and carbon storage may require reevaluation in the context of functional redundancy within complex species interactions networks.

Understorey Seedling Bank in Forest Areas with a Differing Period of Recovery in Mabira Central Forest Reserve, South Central Uganda

Abstract:Seedling banks are very important in forest regeneration following forest disturbances such as crop cultivation. In 2011 and 2013 the Uganda National Forestry Authority (NFA) evicted encroachers from parts of Mabira Central Forest Reserve that had been under crop cultivation for over 40 years. This gave an opportunity for the vegetation to recover. In this study, we assessed the recovery process based on seedling bank diversity, richness and density in three blocks differing in recovery time. Two disturbed blocks, the Western Block (WB) (abandoned by encroachers 1-3 years), and the Eastern Block (EB) (abandoned 4-5 years) before this study and a nearby undisturbed area (intact) were included in the study. We recorded 48 seedlings species; 37 in WB, 30 in EB and 27 in intact. Differences in species richness were not statistically significant among blocks (F2, 88 = 1.2420, p = 0.294). All seedling species found in the intact were found in the EB and WB. There were statistically significant differences in species diversity (Shannon-Wiener: F2, 88 = 5.354, p = 0.006), density (P < 0.001) and composition (ANOSIM; R = 0.55, p = 0.001) among blocks. Apart from Broussonetia papyrifera, other species contributing to the dissimilarity (Acalypha neptunica, Antiaris toxicaria, Blighia unijugata, Funtumia elastica were late succession species. Animal dispersed species dominated intact. Seed-regenerating species were found in both WB and EB, but re-sprouts were more common in EB. These results show that proximity to intact forest aids forest recovery, even for areas with long-term cultivation history.
Seed and pollen dispersal and fine-scale spatial genetic structure of a threatened tree species: Pericopsis elata (HARMS) Meeuwen (Fabaceae)

Abstract:Seed and pollen dispersal are important for defining sustainable forest management practices. By reducing population density, selective logging could affect not only the seed production of timber species but also the selfing rate and the patterns of seed and pollen rains. To assess these risks, we characterized seed and pollen dispersal patterns and the fine-scale spatial genetic structure (FSGS) of Pericopsis elata, a gregarious, wind-dispersed legume tree which is highly logged in Central Africa and threatened by overexploitation. Eleven microsatellite markers were used to genotype 189 adults and 664 seedlings in a 4 km2 plot in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). According to the neighbourhood model, seed dispersal was extremely leptokurtic, with 80% of seeds dispersal distances <75 m, 15% >500 m. Pollen dispersal was locally more extensive (median distance 260 m), but pollen immigration was not detected, and the selfing rate (54%) appeared particularly high compared to other tropical tree species. Limited gene dispersal resulted in remarkably high FSGS (Sp = 0.072). A decay of inbreeding with age also suggests that the species is prone to inbreeding depression. The reproductive success of trees was positively related to their diameter at breast height (dbh), with half of the progeny mothered by trees with dbh > 97 cm and fathered by trees with dbh > 119 cm. Our study highlights that (1) seed sources must be diversified for plantation or population reinforcement to limit consanguinity, and (2) the legal minimum cutting diameter in DRC (60 cm) should be increased to maintain enough post-logging reproductive potential.

Abstract:Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is one of the most common and disabling psychiatric disorders. Treatment with serotonin selective reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) shows significant improvement; however, residual symptoms remain in most patients despite continued adequate OCD treatment. For patients exhibiting partial or no response to multiple SSRIs, augmentation strategies are usually recommended. Here, we introduce a retrospective consecutive sample of aged patients with resistant OCD treated with donepezil augmentation to regular pharmacotherapy. MethodsTen patients (5 males, 5 females; mean [SD] age, 63.8 [7.5] years), suffering from resistant OCD, were openly treated with donepezil 10 mg/d as add-on. Efficacy was assessed at baseline and after 8 weeks of treatment using the Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale, Clinical Global Impression-Severity, and Clinical Global Impression-Improvement. ResultsThe treatment was generally well tolerated without adverse events. In all patients, mean (SD) Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale scores diminished from 27.3 (4.3) points at baseline to 16.9 (4.5) points at week 8 (P < 0.0001). Mean (SD) Clinical Global Impression-Severity scores diminished from 5.5 (0.7) points to 3.1 (1.0) points, (P < 0.001). According to Clinical Global Impression-Improvement, 7 patients demonstrated “very much” or “much” improvement and 3 patients did not demonstrate any improvement. ConclusionsDonepezil was a well-tolerated add-on to regular pharmacotherapy in treatment-resistant OCD patients in this small cases series. Donepezil could be a promising optional therapy for patients suffering from resistant OCD, but further randomized controlled studies are necessary.

Abstract:Seed predation may reduce the quantity and diversity of seeds and limit seedling recruitment. However, the extent to which seed predation may depend on the species and vegetational microhabitat has been less studied. We studied seed predation of woody species in the Mediterranean-type ecosystem of central Chile. We explored if interspecific differences in the magnitude of seed predation depends on the seed mass, evaluated the role vertebrate herbivores in seed predation, and examined if seed predation depends on the vegetation patch type. We conducted a seed removal experiment with eight woody species in three vegetation patch types (forest, shrub, and open) and replicated in two localities. We established exclosures for birds and mammals (wire cages covering 1 m 2 ) and evaluated seed removal during 18 days within and outside of them. We also evaluated the soil seed availability by collecting soil samples inside and outside these exclosures after 2 years of exclusion in the same vegetation patches, adding other three localities. Exclosures significantly reduced the number of seeds removed in all species and patch types of both localities (overall 24.02% of removal in non-exclusion areas vs. 1.77% in exclosures). The magnitude of seed predation was negatively related to the seed mass of species. Exclosures significantly increased the number and species richness of seeds in the soil of forest and shrub patches of four localities. The results suggest that seed predation is mainly produced by vertebrates, affects several woody species from central Chile, and is more common in forest and shrub patches.

Abstract:Animals can have both positive (e.g. via seed dispersal) and negative (e.g. via herbivory) impacts on plants. The net effects of these interactions remain difficult to predict and may be affected by overhunting and habitat disturbance, two widespread threats to tropical forests. Recent studies have documented their separate effects on plant recruitment but our understanding of how defaunation and logging interact to influence tropical tree communities is limited. From 2013 to 2016, we followed the fate of marked tree seedlings ( n = 1489) from 81 genera in and outside experimental plots. Our plots differentially excluded small, medium and large-bodied mammal herbivores in logged and unlogged forest in Malaysian Borneo. We assessed the effects of experimental defaunation and logging on taxonomic diversity and plant trait (wood density, specific leaf area, fruit size) composition of seedling communities. Although seedling mortality was highest in the presence of all mammal herbivores (44%), defaunation alone did not alter taxonomic diversity nor plant trait composition. However, herbivores (across all body sizes) significantly reduced mean fruit size across the seedling community over time (95% confidence interval (CI): −0.09 to −0.01), particularly in logged forest (95% CI: −0.12 to −0.003). Our findings suggest that impacts of mammal herbivores on plant communities may be greater in forests with a history of disturbance and could subsequently affect plant functional traits and ecological processes associated with forest regeneration.
Topsoil disturbance reshapes diaspore interactions with ground‐foraging animals in a megadiverse grassland

Abstract:QuestionsAnthropogenic disturbances are known to be followed by extremely poor recovery in edaphic grasslands. However, the role of interactions with diaspore predators and secondary dispersers, which compose the dispersal filter and modulate plant community recovery, remains overlooked. We performed field experiments to investigate how soil disturbances affect diaspore interactions with the ground‐foraging fauna to better understand how disturbance influences regeneration potential. LocationCampo rupestre vegetation, megadiverse edaphic grasslands, southeastern Brazil. MethodsWe used diaspores from five native species to compare removal rates between disturbed (top soil removal) and preserved sites. We controlled invertebrate and vertebrate access to determine their role. Additionally, we assessed differences in the diaspore removal effectiveness (DRE) and the structure of animal‐diaspore interactions through network based‐approach. ResultsFor three species, diaspore removal was relatively high (between 50 and 100%). Invertebrates were the most common removal agents in both disturbed and preserved sites. Interactions with foraging fauna and removal rates were 20% smaller in disturbed sites. Considering all diaspores removal events in disturbed sites, 24% resulted in the displacement from disturbed to preserved sites, but no diaspore was transported from preserved to disturbed ones. The animal‐diaspore network was exclusively composed by ant‐diaspore interactions and were more diverse and robust in preserved sites compared to disturbed ones. Seed predator ants (Pheidole and Dorymyrmex) were more common in disturbed sites. Furthermore, we found significant differences in the DRE between ant species and site types, suggesting specificity in the provision of dispersal services. ConclusionsTopsoil removal affected removal proportions, DRE and ant‐diaspore interaction network structure. The lack of diaspore dispersal towards disturbed sites indicates that soil removal affects secondary seed removal dynamics, precluding recovery potential. Disturbance negatively affected diaspore fate by reshaping interactions with ground‐foraging secondary seed dispersers and predators, constraining the development of seed bank and thus vegetation dynamics and resilience.

Abstract:The use of propagules collected in ecotonal regions for restoration purposes is challenging because of the mix of species from different vegetation types and reproductive phenological variability. We used a database of the Xingu Seed Network in Brazil, which contains data on 139 native tree species for 8 years (2011–2018) in the Cerrado–Amazonia transition zone, to answer three questions: (1) What is the spatio‐temporal variability in the seed dispersal of tree species, and how does it relate to the species' preferential habitat? (2) Is there a relationship between the seed dispersal period and climate variables? (3) Is the frequency of tree species with different dispersal syndromes equally distributed among biomes and seed‐size classes? Independent of their preferred ecosystem (Amazonia or Cerrado), some species showed substantial spatio asynchrony in fruit dispersal, extending the dispersal period at a regional scale. The seed dispersal period was strongly correlated (rs > 0.6) with precipitation and minimum or maximum air temperature in 41% (n = 57) of the studied species. We showed that three‐quarters of the species (n = 105) dispersed seeds in the late dry and early rainy periods, with little variation among dispersal syndromes. Our findings will enhance the effectiveness of restoration initiatives by increasing the accuracy of predictions of the location and time for collecting seeds in the extensive Cerrado–Amazonia transition zone.

Abstract:This review explores the potential of integrating seed dispersal networks in tropical forest restoration to enhance restoration outcomes. Combining zoocentric and phytocentric approaches when sampling for seed dispersal interactions can yield larger networks and foster a more comprehensive understanding of dispersal interactions. Identifying the functional traits of generalist species that contribute to nested patterns in seed dispersal networks may be useful for restoration practitioners focusing on species reintroductions or active restoration planting efforts. Through stages of forest succession, a highly connected and species‐rich network is desirable for earlier stages of succession, while modularity and specialization should be highest at later successional stages. While the reassembly of fruit‐frugivore interactions remains at the forefront of tropical forest restoration, seed dispersal networks emerge as a potential approach to enhance restoration success. This review explores the integration of seed dispersal networks in tropical forest restoration, with the aims of (1) synthesizing important findings in the literature, (2) detailing potential biases in utilizing network theory, and (3) addressing current knowledge gaps and future directions for the field. We first highlight the importance of combining phytocentric and zoocentric approaches when sampling for seed dispersal interactions, as different methodologies have varying effects on network measures, and combining approaches can foster a more comprehensive understanding of dispersal interactions. Furthermore, when integrating seed dispersal networks into restoration goals, we suggest a highly connected and species‐rich network is desirable for earlier stages of forest succession where community turnover and transient interactions are pivotal. Nested patterns may emerge throughout varying stages of forest succession, and identifying generalist species that make up nested patterns may be useful for restoration practitioners in both early and later stages of forest regeneration. Modularity should be highest at later stages of succession to maintain community structure and stability, and connector species may play important roles in facilitating seed dispersal across temporal scales. Finally, we emphasize the importance of site‐specific long‐term datasets, chronosequences, and studies at large spatial scales to continue to understand network reassembly as a function of tropical forest succession and to develop effective strategies that enhance the recovery of tropical forest ecosystems.

Abstract:Species abilities for seed germination and seedling survival under different situations are good predictors of their capacity to colonize a broad range of habitats. Biotic conditions related to understory cover, and abiotic factors such as litter thickness and soil moisture can be determinants of plant establishment. We evaluated seed germination, seedling survival, and growth of the invasive tree Hovenia dulcis under experimental field conditions in three successional stages (open, semi-open, and closed vegetation) of a fragmented seasonal deciduous forest in southern Brazil. Our hypotheses were that H. dulcis seed germination, seedling survival, and seedling growth decrease along the successional gradient, that these factors are positively affected by soil moisture and percentage of bare soil, and negatively affected by understory cover and litter thickness. We also tested the hypothesis that herbivory on H. dulcis would decrease along the successional gradient. Our main finding was that H. dulcis can germinate and establish along all forest successional stages because it is shade-tolerant. Abiotic factors were more important than biotic factors for seed germination. Soil moisture positively affected seed germination while litter thickness negatively influenced seed germination. Percentage of bare soil negatively influenced seedling survival. Germination rates were higher in closed vegetation, whereas seedling survival was higher in semi-open vegetation, and growth rates were higher in open vegetation. There was no difference in herbivory among successional stages. The results of our study show that intermediate forest succession stages congregate the most favorable conditions for H. dulcis establishment, likely making them more susceptible to invasion.
