Abstract:TiO2 is the most photoactive material because of its superstrong photooxidizing ability, and TiO2 photocatalysis has been widely applied in sustainable water treatment and environmental remediation. However, poor sunlight or visible-light harvesting efficiency and fast recombination rate of the photogenerated charge carriers severely limit the practical applications of TiO2. To overcome these problems, the present work demonstrates a facile in-situ co-condensation method combined with hydrothermal treatment to prepare a series of graphitized carbon/TiO2 composite photocatalysts, and anatase TiO2 phase and pi-pi-conjugated polycyclic aromatic carbon structure are created simultaneously. As-prepared TiO2/C composites exhibit remarkably high visible-light photocatalytic activity in the degradation of aqueous emerging phenolic pollutants, acetaminophen (APAP) and methylparaben (MPB), and apparent rate constant of the TiO2/C composite with carbon doping level of 10.3% for APAP and MPB removal is 7.6 and 2.8 times higher than that of bare TiO2, and 6.2 and 2.6 times higher than that of Degussa P25 TiO2. Based on the results of photoelectrochemical experiments, indirect chemical probe measurements, and ESR spectroscopy, it is verified that doping TiO2 with graphitized carbon is responsible for this enhanced photocatalytic activity, which renders the improved visible-light harvesting ability, the accelerated separation of the photogenerated charge carriers, and enlarged BET surface areas. Through analyzing the intermediates yielded in the photodegradation process, the pathway of visible-light photocatalytic degradation of APAP and MPB over the TiO2/C composite is proposed. Fe-Mo-O Doping G-C3n4 Exfoliated Composite for Removal of Rhodamine B by Advanced Oxidation and Photocatalysis

Abstract:Fe-Mo-O doping g-C3N4 exfoliated composite was fabricated and characterized by XRD, FT-IR, UV-vis, SEM, TEM, XPS and N(2 )adsorption-desorption techniques. The as-prepared composite was composed of MoO3, FeMoyOx and exfoliated g-C3N4 crystals, and thus demonstrated high efficiency for degradation of Rhodamine B by advanced oxidation due to the rapid decomposition of H2O2 over the composite catalyst, giving 99 % degradation rate within oxidation time of 15 min. Also, it demonstrated high activity for photocatalytic degradation of Rhodamine B under visible light, achieving > 99 % degradation rate. The high catalytic activity for advanced oxidation and photocatalysis was mainly ascribed to the Fe/Mo dual ion synergy system that could effectively protect Fe (II), or heterojunctions on exfoliated g-C(3)N(4 )that could inhibit the recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes. Moreover, the composite catalyst presented an excellent recovery and reusability for advanced oxidation and photocatalytic degradation.

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are widely used in the preparation of composite functional materials with improved performance due to their unique electrical, mechanical properties and one-dimensional nanostructure. In this paper, the composite of TiO2 nanoparticles and acid-treated carbon nanotubes distributed on poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) nanofibers was fabricated by sequential treatments of electrospinning, hydrothermal synthesis and freeze-drying. The resulting ternary composite of TiO2/CNTs/PMMA, which is featured with a specific surface area of 83.2 m(2)/g, effectively photodegraded a series of dyes, such as methyl blue, Rhodamine B, Sulforhodamine B and methyl orange (MO). In particular, complete degradation of MO (10 mg/L, 100 mL) was accomplished with TiO2/CNTs/PMMA (20 mg) in 40 min under UV irradiation. Moreover, the high photocatalytic activity of the ternary composite, which is superior to that of TiO2/PMMA, did not deteriorate during consecutive photodegradation tests up to ten runs. The photocatalytic mechanism of TiO2/CNTs/PMMA has been explored. The desirable high photocatalytic activity, excellent stability and easy recyclability of the ternary composite is attributed to the introduction of CNTs and the electrospun PMMA nanofiber support.

Abstract:Framework modification of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) with organic molecules is recognized as an effective strategy to enhance its photocatalytic performance by improving the charge separation in g-C3N4. In this work, pyromellitic diimide (PD) with strong electron-withdrawing ability and conjugated structure was linked to g-C3N4 skeleton by simple solution blending to prepare a composite of g-C3N4 @PD. It is found that the resultant composite exhibited much higher photocatalytic activity than pristine g-C3N4 in the photodegradation of an anionic dye of sulforhodamine B (SRB). Specifically, the composite with PD of 1% in weight ratio showed a degradation rate constant 3.8 times and 5.1 times that of g-C3N4 under the illumination of visible light and ultra violet light, respectively. Moreover, g-C3N4 @PD revealed highly selective photodegradation in favor of a cationic dye of malachite green in its mixture with the anionic dye of SRB, which is attributed to preferential adsorption of the cationic dye onto the negatively charged photocatalyst. In addition, the composite maintained a high photodegradation efficiency of 98.2% at the end of five cycles of the photodegradation of SRB, suggesting good photocatalytic stability. It is proposed that enhanced photocatalytic activity of the composite is related to the electron-withdrawing effect of PD, which facilitates the separation of photo-induced electrons from the g-C3N4 skeleton to the boundary PD to inhibit the recombination of the photogenerated electron/hole pairs in g-C3N4 skeleton. The facilely prepared g-C3N4 @PD is a promising photocatalyst in environmental remediation.
One stone two birds: novel carbon nanotube/Bi4VO8Cl photocatalyst for simultaneous organic pollutants degradation and Cr(VI) reduction

Abstract:In this work, visible light-responsive carbon nanotubes (CNTs)/Bi4VO8Cl composite photocatalysts have been prepared by a facile in situ hydrothermal method and characterized by various techniques. The photocatalytic properties of the photocatalysts are evaluated by the degradation of refractory azo-dye methyl orange (MO), hexavalent chromium Cr(VI), and bisphenol A (BPA) in water under visible light irradiation. It is found that the as-prepared composite with 4 wt% CNTs shows an optimal photocatalytic performance, and its photocatalytic activity is 30% higher than that of pure Bi4VO8Cl. The enhanced photocatalytic activity is ascribed to the synergetic effects induced by increased light absorption, increased adsorption efficiency for pollutant, and suppressed recombination rate of photogenerated charge carriers. Furthermore, efficient removals of Cr(VI), bisphenol A (BPA), and combined contamination of Cr(VI) and BPA over CNTs/Bi4VO8Cl composite further confirm that the degradation of organic pollutants is a photocatalytic mechanism rather than photosensitization of dye. Of particular importance is that removal efficiency of single pollutant can be promoted by the coexistence of the Cr(VI) and organics. The mechanism of synergetic promotion is discussed and attributed to the accelerated separation of charge carriers resulted from their simultaneously being captured by pollutants. Moreover, the CNTs/Bi4VO8Cl composite exhibits good stability and recycling performance in the photocatalytic degradation process. Therefore, the composite photocatalysts developed in the present work are expected to have the potential in purification of complex wastewater. Graphical abstract The separation of photogenerated charge carriers and adsorbing capacity as well as visible light absorption ability of Bi4VO8Cl are significantly promoted by coupling with carbon nanotubes. Simultaneous removal of Cr(VI) and organic pollutants can be achieved by CNTs/Bi4VO8Cl composite photocatalysts under visible light irradiation.
Photocatalytic Reduction of Hexavalent Chromium Using Cu3.21Bi4.79S9/g-C3N4 Nanocomposite

Abstract:The photocatalytic reduction of hexavalent chromium, Cr(VI), to the trivalent species, Cr(III), has continued to inspire the synthesis of novel photocatalysts that are capable of achieving the task of converting Cr(VI) to the less toxic and more useful species. In this study, a novel functionalized graphitic carbon nitride (Cu3.21Bi4.79S9/gC3N4) was synthesized and characterized by using X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetry analysis (TGA), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), transmission electron microscope (TEM), and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The composite was used for the photocatalytic reduction of hexavalent chromium, Cr(VI), under visible light irradiation. A 92.77% efficiency of the reduction was achieved at pH 2, using about 10 mg of the photocatalyst and 10 mg/L of the Cr(VI) solution. A pseudo-first-order kinetic study indicated 0.0076 min−1, 0.0286 min−1, and 0.0393 min−1 rate constants for the nanoparticles, pristine gC3N4, and the nanocomposite, respectively. This indicated an enhancement in the rate of reduction by the functionalized gC3N4 by 1.37- and 5.17-fold compared to the pristine gC3N4 and Cu3.21Bi4.79S9, respectively. A study of how the presence of other contaminants including dye (bisphenol A) and heavy-metal ions (Ag(I) and Pb(II)) in the system affects the photocatalytic process showed a reduction in the rate from 0.0393 min−1 to 0.0019 min−1 and 0.0039 min−1, respectively. Finally, the radical scavenging experiments showed that the main active species for the photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI) are electrons (e−), hydroxyl radicals (·OH−), and superoxide (·O2−). This study shows the potential of functionalized gC3N4 as sustainable materials in the removal of hexavalent Cr from an aqueous solution.

Abstract:Groundwater contaminated with hexavalent chromium Cr(VI) causes serious health concerns for the ecosystem. In this study, a hybrid amino functionalized MOF@rGO nanocatalyst was produced by utilization of a biowaste mediated carbon material (reduced graphene oxide; rGO) and its surface was modified by in situ synthesis of a nanocrystalline, mixed ligand octahedral MOF containing iron metal and NH2 functional groups and the prepared composite was investigated for Cr (VI) removal. The photocatalytic degradation of Cr(VI) in aqueous solutions was carried out under UV irradiation. Using a batch mode system, the effect of numerous control variables was examined, and the process design and optimization were carried out by response surface methodology (RSM). The photocatalyst, NH2-MIL(53)-Fe@rGO, was intended to be a stable and highly effective nanocatalyst throughout the recycling tests. XRD, SEM, EDS, FTIR examinations were exploited to discover more about surface carbon embedded with MOF. 2 g/L of NH2-MIL-53(Fe)/rGO was utilized in degrading 200 mg/L of Cr(VI) in just 100 min, implying the selective efficacy of such a MOF-rGO nanocatalyst. Moreover, the Eg determinations well agreed with the predicted range of 2.7 eV, confirming its possibility to be exploited underneath visible light, via the Tauc plot. Thus, MOF anchored onto biowaste derived rGO photo-catalyst was successfully implemented in chromium degradation.
Iron single atoms anchored on ultrathin carbon nitride photocatalyst for visible light-driven water decontamination

Abstract:Graphitic carbon nitride has gained considerable attention as a visible-light photocatalyst. However, its photocatalytic efficiency is restricted by its limited capacity for absorbing visible light and swift recombination of charge carriers. To overcome this bottleneck, we fabricated an atomic Fe-dispersed ultrathin carbon nitride (Fe-UTCN) photocatalyst via one-step thermal polymerization. Fe-UTCN showed high efficiency in the photodegradation of acetaminophen (APAP), achieving > 90 % elimination within 60-min visible light irradiation. The anchoring of Fe atoms improved the photocatalytic activity of UTCN by narrowing the bandgap from 2.50 eV to 2.33 eV and suppressing radiative recombination. Calculations by density functional theory revealed that the Fe–N 4 sites (adsorption energy of − 3.10 eV) were preferred over the UTCN sites (adsorption energy of − 0.18 eV) for the adsorption of oxygen and the subsequent formation of O 2 •− , the dominant reactive species in the degradation of APAP. Notably, the Fe-UTCN catalyst exhibited good stability after five successive runs and was applicable to complex water matrices. Therefore, Fe-UTCN, a noble-metal-free photocatalyst, is a promising candidate for visible light-driven water decontamination.

Abstract:Activated carbon/CuFe 2 O 4 composite was made using a hydrothermal process. X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), nitrogen adsorption isotherms, vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), UV–visible diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS), and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy were used to characterise the CuFe 2 O 4 /AC composites that were synthesised using the previously mentioned method. Each phase's existence is confirmed by XRD, and TEM revealed the spherically shaped nanoparticles. The Fe–O, Cu–O, and AC vibration modes in the composite are validated by the infrared spectra. Under 60 min of visible light irradiation, the 10%-CuFe 2 O 4 /AC composite, which has a bandgap of 2.19 eV and soft-ferromagnetic characteristics, demonstrated strong photocatalytic activity in decomposing MB (50 ppm, 30 mL) up to 99.5%. Through preservation of its high percentage of dye degradation, the 10%-CuFe 2 O 4 /AC composite may be used again. The results of the radical trapping experiments indicate that the primary active species involved in the photocatalytic degradation process are superoxide (O 2 − ) and hydroxyl (OH*). Five cycles of the photocatalyst's recyclability were investigated, and the results showed that the replicated catalysts showed very little rate variations. An effective photocatalyst for the breakdown of wastewater dye is CuFe 2 O 4 /AC.

Synthesis of a well-dispersed CaFe2O4/g-C3N4/CNT composite towards the degradation of toxic water pollutants under visible light

Abstract:Herein, we fabricated a ternary photocatalyst composed of CaFe2O4, multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) via a simple hydrothermal route. CaFe2O4 acted as a photosensitizer medium and the CNT acted as a co-catalyst, which remarkably enhanced the photocatalytic performances of g-C3N4 towards the degradation of hexavalent chromium (Cr(vi)) and the antibiotic tetracycline (TC) under visible light irradiation. To investigate the morphological and topological features of the photocatalyst, field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses were performed. The surface properties and oxidation state of the CaFe2O4/g-C3N4/CNT composite were determined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The recombination rate of the charge carriers and the band gap values of the as-synthesized catalysts were analyzed by photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL) and diffused reflectance spectroscopy (UV/Vis DRS) studies, respectively. Besides the degradation reactions, the high hydrogen production rate of 1050 mu mol h(-1) under visible light using the CaFe2O4/g-C3N4/CNT composite loaded with 5 wt% CNT was observed. The superior photocatalytic performances of the CaFe2O4/g-C3N4/CNT composite can be ascribed to the effective heterojunction formed between g-C3N4 and the CaFe2O4 matrix, in which the CNT act as a conducting bridge in the system, promoting the production of photoinduced charge carriers in the semiconductor system. Finally, the plausible photocatalytic mechanism towards the degradation of pollutants and hydrogen production was discussed carefully.
Removal of Chromium (VI) by a Self-Regenerating and Metal Free G-C3n4/graphene Hydrogel System Via the Synergy of Adsorption and Photo-Catalysis under Visible Light

Abstract:We propose g-C3N4 nano-sheets and a graphene three-dimensional (3D) gel system composed of two metal free nano-sheets of g-C3N4 and graphene via the stacking effect of two-dimensional (2D) nano sheets and the pi-pi conjugated at low temperature. This material has self-regeneration and containing only C and N, which confirms the ability to efficiently remove chromium (VI) (Cr(VI)) via the synergistic effect of adsorption and photo-catalysis. The graphene sheets offer surface adsorption in the composite, which can lead to the adsorption of Cr (VI) with high adsorption capacity and fast speed. The g-C3N4 nano-sheets have high photocatalytic activity in situ for composite to absorb the high toxicity of Cr (VI). This was rapidly reduced to Cr (III). The adsorption and photocatalytic degradation synergized to achieve self-regeneration. The results showed that 80% Cr (VI) (30 mg/L) can be adsorbed by composite in 30 min, and the removal of Cr (VI) reached 100% in 120 min under visible light irradiation via adsorption and photo-catalysis. The low concentrations (2 mg/L) of Cr (VI) can be achieved via a degradation rate of almost 100% that was maintained for more than 26h. At the same time, there was a large quantity of hydrogel in the pore space network and micron level structure in the composite. This offers 99% recycling and reuse via a stainless steel filter (pore size 38 pm) without the need to rely on a complex separation system. Facile fabrication of a Z-scheme g-C 3 N 5 /Gd-MOF/silver nanocube composite as a new generation visible light active photocatalyst for abatement of persistent toxic pollutants

Abstract:Some of the persistent hazardous contaminants that readily dissolve in water with a recognizable hue are hexavalent chromium and neomycin antibiotic. Herein, a Z-scheme g-C 3 N 5 /Gd-MOF/silver nanocube (CNGdAg) ternary composite was successfully designed by the combination of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 5 ), gadolinium-based molecular organic framework (Gd-MOF), and silver nanocubes (AgNCs). Under visible light irradiation, CNGdAg outperforms individual components and binary composites in the photoreduction of hexavalent chromium (Cr 6+ ) and removal of neomycin. The maximum photocatalytic efficiency of Cr 6+ (98%) in 150 minutes and complete neomycin removal in 25 minutes were accomplished by the CNGdAg-40% composite. A hydrothermal approach was chosen to prepare this visible light active composite. The formation of photogenerated electrons and superoxide radicals plays a major contributing factor in the efficient degradation in a short period without using any external components. The combined effect of the individual components in the composite led to the remarkable degradation via the Z-scheme pathway. This work exemplifies that the CNGdAg-40% photocatalyst can be used for the removal of heavy metal ions and organic contaminants from aquatic environments.

Carbon nitride coupled with Fe-based MOFs as an efficient photoelectrocatalyst for boosted degradation of ciprofloxacin: Mechanism, pathway and fate

Abstract:This paper reports a heterostructure composites, g-C3N4/MIL-101(Fe), that was synthetized through effortless solvothermal method by g-C3N4 coupled with MIL-101(Fe) containing terephthalic acid (H2BDC) as organic linker. Eminent photoelectrocatalytic degradation effect was demonstrated by the heterojunctions coordinated with visible light and low current (PEC) for the treatment of ciprofloxacin (CIP) in model matrix and realistic water samples. Moreover, morphological, physicochemical and photocatalytic properties of the catalyst were appraised. Compared with g-C3N4, MIL-101(Fe) and the heterojunction in various systems, the CIP degradation was up to 87.55% by 0.5 g/L of g-C3N4/MIL-101(Fe) addition along with 12 W LED lamp and 50 mA current in 240 min. The realization of PEC synergism for an intensified treatment effect to this organic molecule has mainly been implemented through electro-Fenton and visible light catalysis, which was based on circulation of the FeII/FeIII along with a correct band structure between g-C3N4 and MIL-101(Fe). Active species capture and electron spin resonance (ESR) test uncovered that •OH, •O2– and h+ contributed to the elimination of CIP. The degradation pathway and toxicity assessment of intermediates was conducted using LC-MS, DFT calculation and QSAR theory. Seventeen kinds of intermediates were detected, which showed a reduced toxicity. Findings of the paper provide incisive insights on the mechanism of the degradation of organic pollutants through PEC synergy over g-C3N4/MIL-101(Fe) heterojunction catalyst. Moreover, the results constitute a meritorious instance for preparing catalyst in this application field.

Abstract:A novel ternary SnO2/g-C3N4/diatomite (SCN/DE) nanocomposite was rationally designed and successfully synthesized via a two-step method with in-situ polymerization and self-assembling. Under visible light illumination, the resulting SCN/DE composite exhibited superior photocatalytic performance and good reusability for the photoreduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) in the presence of citric acid, the apparent rate constant of SCN/DE composite was up to around 22.68 times, 13.53 times and 8.65 times as much as those of g-C3N4 (CN), g-C3N4/diatomite (CN/DE) and SnO2/g-C3N4 (SCN) composites, respectively. The citric acid is a co-catalyst (chelating agent) rather than a reactant during the reactive process. Besides, the intimate interface contact and ternary heterogeneous structure were established among the SnO2, g-C3N4 and diatomite. The induced positive charged surface of diatomite should be the key factor in enhancing photoactivity of the resultant SCN/DE composite, which significantly accelerated the charge separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs as well as improved the adsorption performance towards Cr (VI). In particular, a possible reduction pathway of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) by SCN/DE composite with the assistance of citric acid was first investigated and proposed. This work provides a novel strategy for synthesizing highly efficient mineral-based photocatalysts with great promising application foreground for Cr(VI)-containing wastewater treatment.

Abstract:In this study, a one-step hydrothermal preparation strategy was employed to synthesize a graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) composite photocatalyst co-decorated with Fe sites and carbon quantum dots (Fe–CQDs/g-C 3 N 4 ). Through a series of characterisation techniques, the successful integration of Fe atoms and carbon quantum dots (CQDs) onto g-C 3 N 4 was achieved. Moreover, the presence of Fe, specifically Fe–N bonds, enhanced the charge-carrier transfer. With carbamazepine (CBZ) as the model pollutant, Fe–CQDs/g-C 3 N 4 increased the photocatalytic activity with efficient peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation under solar light irradiation, achieving 100 % CBZ degradation in 15 min over a wide pH range (3–9). Doping of the catalyst with Fe and CQDs resulted in a narrowing of the catalyst bandgap (2.25 eV) compared to that of g-C 3 N 4 (2.79 eV), confirming the promotion of photo-induced charge separation. The CBZ degradation pathways were elucidated by ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography and high-definition mass spectrometry. The Fe–CQDs/g-C 3 N 4 composite was found to possess substantial potential for the efficient degradation of pollutants.

Abstract:Abstract Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are a group of porous materials that display potential in the elimination of toxic industrial compounds (TICs) from polluted water streams. However, their applications have so far been held up by issues due to their physical nature and cost. In this study, activated carbon (AC) is modified with an Fe-based MOF, iron terephthalate (Fe-BDC). A facile and cost-effective impregnation method is used for enhanced removal from aqueous solutions. The new adsorbent is characterized by SEM, FTIR, PXRD, and BET. The composite displays excellent uptake of Cr (VI) when compared to un-impregnated AC with a maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of 100 mg·g −1 . The experimental data shows a high correlation to the Langmuir adsorption model. The adsorption kinetic study reveals that the adsorption of Cr (VI) to Fe-BDC@AC obeys the pseudo-first-order equation. The composite shows high reusability after five cycles and high adsorption rates reaching equilibrium in just 50 min. Such properties make the nanocomposite promising for water decontamination on larger scales compared to powder-based alternatives, such as individual MOF crystals.

Abstract:A novel cation-substituted transition metal oxide nano-semiconductor was developed for efficient visible light photocatalysis. This nanocomposite (NCs) was created by immobilizing well-defined single crystalline Co 2 VO 4 2D nano-hexagons onto a mesoporous biochar matrix, derived from philodendron plants. The Co 2 VO 4 nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized using a biologically assisted method employing an ornamental plant, L. delavayanum . Remarkably, the resultant NCs exhibited exceptional photocatalytic activity, achieving 99% degradation efficiency of pharmaceutical pollutant rifampicin (RIF), and merely 1.8% of total organic carbon (TOC) left as residues post-photocatalytic degradation. The influence of pH (optimal at 8), NCs and RIF concentration, and presence of ions was studied and the system worked effectively in a wide range of environment. The coupling of biochar resulted in a greater narrowing of the bandgap of Co 2 VO 4 and thus extending the working range under visible light. A plausible mechanism assisted with photo-Fenton process is outlined based on the support of extensive characterization carried out to elucidate the NCs properties along with the results of scavenging experiments. The NCs performance retained over 98% efficiency even after six consecutive reusing cycles. The present study underscores the potential of the prepared NCs as a robust and effective solution for environmental pollutant removal, with its unique composition and synergistic photo-Fenton reaction contributing to its outstanding photocatalytic performance.

Abstract:The worldwide challenge of eliminating pharmaceutical contaminants requires immediate attention. Developing bio-based catalysts that are eco-friendly, reusable, and high-performance, employing starch (ST) and montmorillonite (MMT) as support, holds tremendous promise as a novel biocatalyst for pharmaceutical waste removal. In this study, a montmorillonite/α-Fe2O3/starch (MMT/α-Fe2O3/ST) bio-nanocomposite photocatalyst was successfully synthesized and used for acetaminophen (ACT) degradation under UVA-LED irradiation. The influence of operational factors, such as catalyst, ACT concentrations, and solution pH, on photocatalytic activity was examined in detail; catalyst: 0.75 g/L, pH: 7.1, leading to total ACT (10 mg/L) removal in ∼80 min. MMT/α-Fe2O3/ST showed excellent durability due to negligible Fe leaching. After four successive degradation cycles, ACT and TOC elimination efficiencies remained over 91 and 42.7 %. Compared to other anions studied, carbonate ions suppressed the most ACT degradation. Based on the radical scavenger experiments, hydroxyl and superoxide radicals and holes were involved in the MMT/α-Fe2O3/ST system. LC-MS results were used to propose ACT degradation pathways. This work illuminated the significance of biocatalysts in removing emerging pollutants from wastewater.

Abstract:The development of effective photocatalysts for the reduction of Cr(VI) and the degradation of antibiotics remains a challenge. The present work reports the development of a novel heterojunction composite material, BiOCl/BaTiO3@Co-BDC-MOF (BOC/BTO@Co-MOF), based on solvothermal techniques. To characterize the surface and bulk features of the material, techniques such as FE-SEM, HR-TEM, BET/BJH, XPS, FT-IR, p-XRD, and UV-Vis-DRS were used. Based on the results, the BiOCl/BaTiO3 nanocomposites are uniformly dispersed on the rod-shaped Co-BDC MOF, resulting in a layered texture on the surface. A further advantage of the composite structure is the strong interfacial enhancement facilitating the separation of photoexcited electron-hole pairs. Also, compared to its pristine counterparts, the heterostructure material exhibited excellent surface area and pore properties. The photocatalytic efficiency towards reduction and degradation of Cr(VI)/SMX pollutants were evaluated by optimizing various analytical parameters, such as pH, catalytic loading concentrations, analyte concentration, and scavenger role. The specially designed BOC/BTO@Co-MOF composite achieved a 96.5% Cr(VI) reduction and 98.2% SMX degradation under 60.0-90.0 min of visible light illumination at pH 3.0. This material is highly reusable and has a six-time recycling potential. The findings of this study contribute to a better understanding of the efficient decontamination of inorganic and organic pollutants in water purification systems.
