Abstract:Motivated from the shortage of the existing research studies on impacts of dangerously contagious diseases on firms' financial performance, this study sheds light on the impacts of Coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak on financial performance upon on the quarterly data of 126 Chinese listed firms across 16 industries. Overall, the Covid-19 outbreak reduced Chinese listed firms' financial performance proxied by the revenue growth rate, ROA, ROE, and asset turnover. This outbreak's negative effects on Chinese firms' profitability were much smaller than that on their revenue growth rates. While this outbreak's negative effects on financial performance of Chinese listed firms were bigger for those that were seriously affected by this pandemic like airlines, travel, and entertainment (ATE), this pandemic's effects were positive for the medicine industry. In the meanwhile, Chinese listed firms that located in high-risk regions suffered a bigger financial loss during the outbreak, and especially there was a strong Hubei effect. The corporate culture and CSR moderated the inverse relationship between this outbreak and Chinese firms' financial performance. Findings of this study contribute to enrich the existing literature on impacts of the Covid-19 outbreak on firms' financial performance worldwide and suggest helpful practical and theoretical implications.

Abstract:This research described Chinese listed firms' COVID-19 Outbreak and financial performance using corporate culture (CC) and corporate social responsibility (CSR) evidence. The epidemic's impact on Chinese companies' profits was much less than the impact on their sales growth rates. Although the COVID-19 has had a more significant negative impact on the financial performance of Chinese listed companies in sectors that are more severely impacted, such as travel and entertainment, we believe that the financial performance of the medical industry has improved as a result of the outbreak. Meanwhile, Chinese listed companies in high-risk areas experience more significant financial losses during the epidemic, and the Hubei impact is hefty weight. Corporate social responsibility moderated the inverse relationship between this epidemic and Chinese firms' economic success. This research enhances the current literature on the effects of the COVID-19 on financial success and practical, realistic, and theoretical consequences in companies worldwide.

Abstract:Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) can enhance firm value through non-profit channels, but it may also divert operational resources, potentially harming short-term financial performance. A key question in the literature is whether CSR can improve stock return resilience during negative shocks. Drawing on stakeholder theory, we hypothesize that CSR investment enhances stock resilience, though the effect may vary among firms. This paper analyzes financial data from 3153 Chinese listed companies alongside CSR ratings from the Hexun CSR database. Our findings indicate that firms with higher pre-event CSR ratings demonstrated stronger stock performance during the early stages of the public health emergency in 2020. These results remain robust across various checks and are supported by two instrumental variable approaches: local Confucian cultural influence and Lewbel's heteroskedasticity instrument. We further investigate the factors influencing the effectiveness of CSR in protecting firm value, revealing that CSR activities focused on shareholder responsibility are particularly effective. This protective effect is most pronounced in firms facing poorer financial conditions, lower proportions of institutional investors, heightened industrial competition, and those not operating in socially sensitive industries. Overall, our findings provide evidence that active engagement in CSR can enhance a company's resilience to negative shocks during global health crises.

The COVID-19 outbreak and corporate cash-holding levels: Evidence from China

Abstract:By employing data from Shanghai and Shenzhen A-share markets for the period of 2019-2020, this paper examines the relationship between the degree of the COVID-19 pandemic's impact on firms' cash-holdings levels in China. We find that firms that are severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic have higher current cash holdings levels, suggesting that the more positive (negative) the management tone in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic impact, the lower (higher) the firm's current cash holdings. However, future corporate cash holdings decrease considerably irrespective of the corporate sentiment towards COVID-19. The positive sentiment of each firm's management team towards the supply chain and the government policies results in a relative reduction of current cash holdings, whereas the severe impact on operating performance, especially the impact of the outbreak on the supply chain, demand, production and operations, and government policies, reduces the firm' s future cash holdings. In addition, the impact of the pandemic has increased the current cash holdings of state-owned enterprises and reduced the future cash holdings of non-state-owned enterprises. Meanwhile, companies located in a city with a higher density of population or companies that experience relatively higher competition in the industry tend to undergo a severer impact on their current and future cash holdings due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Overall, this study sheds the light on stimulating the vitality of enterprise investment and promoting the domestic economic cycle.

Abstract:In a DID model, this study examines the impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on the investor sentiment in the financial market of China using monthly panel data on newly listed Chinese companies between October 2019 and June 2020. The outbreak of the pandemic is shown to exert a significant negative impact on investor sentiment. A future industry heterogeneity analysis shows that the pandemic has driven up investor sentiment in the pharmaceutical sector while having a significantly negative impact on non-pharmaceutical sectors. The pandemic is shown to have a negative impact on the private sector and foreign-invested sector in China while a significantly positive impact on the state-owned sector. This study contributes to the existing literature on the investigation of how significant the impact of public health emergencies on investor sentiment is.

Abstract:The Covid-19 pandemic has caused huge losses of lives. Social distancing policies were enacted in an effort to contain the virus. However, they constrained commercial activities, leading to recessions worldwide. Nevertheless, this situation provides an opportunity to investigate how companies' financial measures of liquidity, solvability, activity, and profitability reacted to external risks similar to the pandemic. This paper approaches this issue by collecting data from companies listed on China's Growth Enterprise Market of Shenzhen Stock Exchange. Due to the limited numbers of companies from several industries, only six industries that contain more than 30 companies listed were selected. Several ratios for liquidity, solvability, activity, and profitability were calculated with reported financial data and mapped throughout the studied period. Changes were recorded to determine the sensitivity of these measures. How price changes responded to the increases in the number of covid cases was studied as well. The first finding is that liquidity and solvability ratios were not sensitive to the pandemic for the studied companies. On the contrary, activity and profitability were negatively influenced severely. In addition, prices had a negative relationship with increases in covid cases in general, but the regression result was not statistically significant due to the lack of representations.
ESG performance and stock prices: evidence from the COVID-19 outbreak in China

Abstract:This paper investigates the role of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance in stock prices during the market financial crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. We use the Chinese listed company data as the bases for adopting an event-study method to identify the impact of ESG performance on cumulative abnormal returns. Empirical results suggest that ESG performance significantly increases firms' cumulative abnormal returns and has asymmetric effects during the pandemic. Our results are robust to various robustness checks that consider the replacement of event window period, ESG measurement, adding other control variables, and sample exclusion of Hubei Province. We further find that reputation and insurance effects are important mechanisms through which ESG performance influences stock prices. Lastly, heterogeneous analyses show that ESG effects are considerably pronounced among firms with low human capital and bad image and in high-impact regions.

Abstract:Corporate social responsibility (CSR) could be an effective risk-alleviating tool for companies. However, an important issue is whether CSR plays a risk-alleviating role in large negative shocks such as the COVID-19 pandemic. This study investigated the impact of corporate social responsibility on stock performance in China during the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on the differing effects of strategic and responsive CSR. By analysing daily data on newly confirmed COVID-19 cases and the stock performance of A-share listed companies during the lockdown period in 2020, we find that CSR can significantly mitigate the negative effects of the pandemic on stock returns and recovery. Specifically, responsive CSR has a significant short-term moderating effect, whereas strategic CSR has a significant long-term moderating effect. The moderating effects of CSR are more pronounced among non-state-owned firms, firms with lower financial leverage, and large companies. These findings suggest that companies can reduce short- and long-term risks by strategically using responsive and strategic CSR in response to negative shocks in global economies.

Abstract:This paper uses event study based on the Generalized Autoregressive Conditional Heteroscedasticity (GARCH) model to study the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak on China's financial market. It finds that the pandemic had an overall significant and negative impact on the stock prices of firms listed on SSE, SZSE and ChiNext. However, such impact appeared to be heterogeneous across industries, affecting listed firms in industries such as pharmaceutical and telecommunications positively, but those in services industries such as accommodation, catering, and commercial services negatively. Apparently, a crisis for some had been an opportunity for others. In addition, this paper seeks to understand the micro mechanism behind the heterogeneity of pandemic shock from the perspective of firms' financial position. It finds that listed firms with higher debt level were hit harder, whereas those with more net cash flow had displayed higher resilience against the blow of the pandemic. However, the opposite pattern is found among those listed on ChiNext and in industries severely devastated by the pandemic. These findings have policy implications in terms of preventing systemic financial risks and facilitating recovery during pandemic-induced economic downturns. It also helps investor adjust investment strategies, hedge against risks, and secure gains when the market conditions in general are unfavorable.

Abstract:The objective of this paper is to investigate the impact of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) on the financial performance and cash holdings of Chinese agri-food companies. We also examine whether or not company ownership, the affected areas, and leverage level affect this relationship. The empirical results show that the COVID-19 outbreak has had no significant impact on financial performance and the cash-holding level of agri-food companies. In addition, the financial performance of state-owned companies is enhanced during such a crisis, whereas COVID-19 reduced the financial performance and cash-holding level of privately owned companies. In middle- and high-risk areas, the pandemic has had a negative impact on financial performance, while it has had a positive impact on financial performance in low-risk areas. The negative impact of COVID-19 on cash holding is greater in highly leveraged companies than it has been in low-leveraged companies. This paper may provide some new insights for managers to ensure smooth operation and improve firms’ performance in order to overcome this crisis.

Abstract:This paper studies the effect of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and customer relationships on the stock price during the COVID-19 pandemic. The empirical results show that CSR practices improve firms’ resilience to the negative health crisis shocks. The functional principal component analysis helps display the relationship between CSR and cumulative abnormal returns (CAR). It shows that CSR practices improve customers’ cooperation willingness. Customers of high-CSR firms pay invoices faster during the crisis, which results in less increment of accounts receivable. Hence, high-CSR firms gain more cash support from their customers to overcome the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in higher cumulative abnormal returns.

Abstract:The COVID-19 epidemic broke out in China in January 2020, which triggered the largest wave of corporate philanthropic donations since the 2008 Sichuan earthquake. Based on A-share listed firms in the Shanghai and Shenzhen stock exchanges in 2020, we study whether substantive and symbolic corporate social responsibility (CSR) strategies affect corporate philanthropic responses during the COVID-19 crisis. We use the lagged annual donation and technical dimension scores (T scores) of rankins ratings (RKS) as proxies of CSR performance and CSR disclosure and then define the CSR gap as the gap between the two. The results show that substantive and symbolic strategies cause firms to have material differential responses in the COVID-19 crisis. Specifically, the CSR gap is negatively related to the possibility and the level of crisis donation. In addition, (1) this difference is more pronounced in the earlier period of the COVID-19 crisis; (2) the negative correlation is more pronounced in private firms; and (3) the crisis donation of firms with either strategy obtains no different response from the capital market. Our evidence suggests that the established CSR strategy influences the substantive response of Chinese firms to public emergencies, but their substantive response does not result in different reactions in the capital market.

Abstract:The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on both the financial market and the real economy, leading to widespread concern about the relationship between environmental, social, and governance (ESG) responsibilities and shareholders' wealth. This paper examines the relationship between ESG responsibility and stock returns in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and investigates the impact of ESG responsibility on stock price resilience. The results indicate that corporate ESG scores have positive impacts on stock returns during and after the COVID-19 crisis, with the positive impacts of ESG being more significant in the post-crisis period. Among the different ESG dimensions, environmental responsibility (ESG_E) has a more significant impact on stock returns, while social responsibility (ESG_S) and governance responsibility (ESG_G) have mixed impacts during the crisis. Furthermore, during and after the outbreak of COVID-19, the positive impacts of ESG are more pronounced among firms located in low-trust regions and firms with lower analyst coverage. Additionally, the study finds that corporate ESG responsibility help restore the resilience of stock prices during the crisis, with better ESG performance leading to stronger stock price resilience. Overall, the results strongly support the conclusion that ESG has acted as an "equity vaccine" during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract:The product market competition has become a global challenge for business organizations in the challenging and competitive market environment in the influx of the COVID-19 outbreak. The influence of products competition on organizational performance in developed economies has gained scholars’ attention, and numerous studies explored its impacts on business profitability. The existing studies designate mixed findings between the linkage of CSR practices and Chinese business firms’ healthier performance in emerging economies; however, the current global crisis due to the coronavirus has made product market completion fierce, which ultimately affects business firms’ performance. This study focuses on this logical global challenge, investigates the rationale, and examines product-market completion impact on firms’ performance operating in the Chinese markets. The study collected data from the annual reports of Chinese business organizations with A-share listing and registered with the database of China Stock Markets and Accounting Research (CSMAR). The study employed a Generalized Method of Moment technique and investigated the connection between product market competition and Chinese firm performance. The empirical analysis of this study highlights the conclusion that market competition positively and significantly affected business firms’ performance. This study specified that product market competition play a dynamic and indispensable role in achieving healthier firm performance in the Chinese markets. This study provides valuable insights on practical implications and future research directions for the scholars to draw interesting results with new study models.

Abstract:Novel non-thermal plasma (NTP) technology has the potential to address the bonding issues of Y-TZP and Ti surfaces. This study aims to chemically characterize and evaluate the surface energy (SE) of Y-TZP and Ti surfaces after NTP application. Y-TZP and Ti discs were treated with a hand-held NTP device followed by SE evaluation. Spectra of Y-TZP 3d and Ti 2p regions, survey scans, and quantification of the elements were performed via X-ray photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) prior and after NTP. Separate Y-TZP and Ti discs were NTP treated for contact angle readings using (10-methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogenphosphate) MDP primer. Significant augmentation of SE values was observed in all NTP treated groups. XPS detected a large increase in the O element fraction on both Y-TZP and Ti surfaces. Reduction of contact angle reading was obtained when the MDP primer was placed on NTP treated Y-TZP. Ti surface showed high SE before and after NTP application on Ti surfaces. NTP decreased C and increased O on both surfaces independently of application protocol. Wettability of MDP primer on Y-TZP was significantly increased after NTP. The high polarity obtained on Y-TZP and Ti surfaces after NTP applications appear promising to enhance bonds.
The impact of COVID-19 on cultural industries: An empirical research based on stock market returns

Abstract:The COVID-19 virus has challenged the development of the cultural industries seriously, so far, however few studies have used empirical methods to analyze the impact of the pandemic on the overall cultural industries. Based on the panel data of listed companies, this paper explores the impact of COVID-19 on cultural industries from the perspective of stock market returns. The empirical results show that the pandemic has a significant negative impact on the stock market returns of cultural industries, but the degrees of impact on various creative sub-sectors are significantly different. The findings also indicate that digitalization can effectively reduce the negative impact of COVID-19 on cultural companies, and the epidemic has bigger negative impacts on small and newly-established cultural companies. Moreover, we find that the stock market returns of cultural industries have an inverted U-shaped relationship with the daily growth in total confirmed cases and in total cases of death caused by COVID-19, indicating that the negative marginal impact of COVID-19 on the cultural industries increases firstly and then gradually decreases. Finally, implications for companies and governments are presented respectively based on the findings.

Abstract:Drawing on contract theory, we predict that robust corporate social responsibility (CSR) practices can play a pivotal role in maintaining stakeholder support and safeguarding shareholder values amidst significant financial uncertainties caused by COVID-19 outbreaks. Through empirical tests centered on the January 2020 outbreak in China, we investigate whether pre-pandemic CSR performance influences firm resilience during the crisis. Results show high-CSR firms experienced moderate stock gains, while low-CSR firms faced significant losses around the Wuhan lockdown. Controlled models affirm a positive link between CSR ratings and abnormal stock returns during the outbreak, especially for firms in heavily affected regions and competitive industries. In line with contract theory, our findings underscore how strong pre-pandemic CSR enhances profitability and mitigates uncertainty across operations, supply chains, and demand fluctuations.

Abstract:Listed firms all over the globe are moving their focus from short-term profit maximization to long-term environmental, social, and governance (ESG) objectives. Most business leaders are now cognizant of the growing importance of ESG concerns, which may have an effect on an organization's financial health as well as its reputation in the marketplace. A recent study found that countries with strong ESG performance may be able to improve their financial performance. Yet, in China, the subject of "how does ESG impact financial performance" has received little attention. In this paper, we examine the link between ESG operations and financial indices in China's publicly traded firms using dynamic and static panel data analysis. We begin by gathering financial data and preprocessing it using z -score normalization. The consequence of ESG variables on the financial performance of the company under the pandemic was investigated using statistical analytic techniques such as the Pearson correlation test, logistic regression model, and Fisher's exact test. Due to the study's dynamic and static data, comprehensive ESG has a considerable influence on corporate value and profitability per share. The impact of ESG variables on the financial performance of the company in the event of a pandemic was analyzed using analytical methods such as Pearson correlation, logistic regression, and Fisher's exact test. Performance in ESG may boost financial performance, which could impact investors, business administrators, decision-makers, and industry regulations.

Abstract:Purpose This study aims to investigate the relationship between corporate social responsibility (CSR) and financial distress and the moderating effect of firm characteristics, auditor characteristics and the Coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) in China. Design/methodology/approach The research question is empirically examined on the basis of a data set of 1,257 Chinese-listed firms from 2011 to 2021. The dependent variable is financial distress risk, which is measured mainly by Z-score. CSR score is used as a proxy for CSR. Propensity score matching, two-stage least square and generalized method of moments are adopted to mitigate the potential endogeneity issue. Findings This study reveals that CSR can reduce financial distress. Specifically, results show an inverse relationship between CSR and financial distress, more significantly in non-state-owned enterprises, firms with non-BigN auditor and during Covid-19. The results are consistent and robust to endogeneity tests and sensitivity analyses. Originality/value This study enriches the literature on CSR and financial distress, resulting in a more attractive corporate environment, improved financial stability and more crisis-resistant economies in China.
