Muscle Activation Among Supine, Prone, and Side Position Exercises With and Without a Swiss Ball

Abstract:Background: Prone, supine, and side position exercises are employed to enhance core stability. Hypothesis: Overall core muscle activity would be greater in prone position exercises compared with supine and side position exercises. Study Design: Controlled laboratory study. Methods: Eighteen men and women between 23 and 45 years of age served as subjects. Surface electrodes were positioned over the upper and lower rectus abdominis, external and internal obliques, rectus femoris, latissimus dorsi, and lumbar paraspinals. Electromyography data were collected during 5 repetitions of 10 exercises, then normalized by maximum voluntary isometric contractions (MVIC). Differences in muscle activity were assessed using 1-way repeated-measures analysis of variance, while t tests with a Bonferroni correction were employed to assess pairwise comparisons. Results: Upper and lower rectus abdominis activity was generally significantly greater in the crunch, bent-knee sit-up, and prone position exercises compared with side position exercises. External oblique activity was significantly greater in the prone on ball with right hip extension, side crunch on ball, and side bridge (plank) on toes compared with the prone and side bridge (plank) on knees, the crunch, or the bent-knee sit-up positions. Internal oblique activity was significantly greater in the prone bridge (plank) on ball and prone on ball with left and right hip extension compared with the side crunch on ball and prone and side bridge (plank) on knees positions. Lumbar paraspinal activity was significantly greater in the 3 side position exercises compared with all remaining exercises. Latissimus dorsi activity was significantly greater in the prone on ball with left and right hip extension and prone bridge (plank) on ball and on toes compared with the crunch, bent-knee sit-up, and prone and side bridge (plank) on knees positions. Rectus femoris activity was significantly greater in the prone on ball with left hip extension, bent-knee sit-up, or prone bridge (plank) on toes compared with the remaining exercises. Conclusion: Prone position exercises are good alternatives to supine position exercises for recruiting core musculature. Side position exercises are better for oblique and lumbar paraspinal recruitment. Clinical Relevance: Because high core muscle activity is associated with high spinal compressive loading, muscle activation patterns should be considered when prescribing trunk exercises to those in which high spinal compressive loading may be deleterious.
Effect of Reformer Spring Resistance Modifications on Core Muscle Activity During Basic Core Muscle Exercises

Abstract:Background: Core muscles serve as a central group within the functional kinetic chain, stabilizing the spine during movement. The Reformer is one of the most popular and primary pieces used in Pilates core exercises, requiring effective control of core muscles. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of Reformer spring resistance on core muscle activity. Method: 18 healthy adult females (age: 29.83 ± 4.22 years, body height: 164.98 ± 4.14 cm, body mass: 53.67 ± 5.32 kg) participated in this study. Surface electromyography was recorded from six muscles: rectus abdominis, internal oblique, erector spinae, multifidus, rectus femoris, and biceps femoris during core exercises. Participants performed three core exercises (hip roll, knee-off, and elephant) under three different Reformer spring conditions (fixed platform, platform connected to springs with moderate resistance, platform connected to springs with low resistance). Results: During the hip roll exercise, mean muscle activity of the rectus abdominis, erector spinae, multifidus, and biceps femoris was significantly increased on the low-resistance spring platform compared to the moderate-resistance platform and fixed platform conditions (p < 0.001). During the knee-off exercise, mean muscle activity of the rectus abdominis, internal oblique, erector spinae, and multifidus significantly increased on the low-resistance platform compared to the fixed platform (p < 0.001). Furthermore, during the elephant exercise, mean muscle activity of the rectus abdominis, internal oblique, and rectus femoris significantly increased on the low-resistance spring platform compared to the fixed platform (p < 0.001). Conclusions: These findings suggest the unstable platform caused by the Reformer spring modification impacts core muscle activity during basic core exercises. Therefore, when designing core exercise programs using the Reformer, platform instability should be considered a key factor for rehabilitation and core stability.

Abstract:Excretion of catecholamine metabolites in increased quantities is found in urine of patients with neuroblastoma. To determine if initial pattern of excretion is related to ultimate prognosis, quantitative studies using a paper chromatography technique on single-voided urine specimen obtained at diagnosis from 55 children with neuroblastoma were performed. This retrospective study revealed that the homovanillic acid/vanilmandelic acid ratio (HVA/VMA) was highly predictive: Poor prognosis was correlated with higher levels of HVA relative to VMA (p = 0.003). This correlation was independent of age of patient, stage or histologic grade of tumor (p = 0.02). The presence of cystathionine (p = 0.007), vanillacetic acid (p = 0.009) and/or 3-metoxytyrosine (p = 0.04) also indicated poor prognosis. In contrast the presence of vanilglycol, normetanephrine or β-aminoisobutyric acid did not correlate with prognosis, nor did the absolute levels of VMA or HVA. Therefore initial excretion patterns of urinary catecholamine metabolites may be predictive in ultimate prognosis in neuroblastoma.
Pilates to Improve Core Muscle Activation in Chronic Low Back Pain: A Systematic Review

Abstract:Low back pain is prevalent in the community and associated with deficits in core muscle strength and activation. Pilates is argued to improve movement and reduce pain, yet there is a limited understanding of the specific effects of Pilates training on core muscle strength or activity. A systematic search of databases (CINAHL, Embase, Ovid MEDLINE) used Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) methods to evaluate randomised controlled trials (RCTs) on the effects of Pilates to improve core muscle activation. Methodological quality was assessed using the Physiotherapy Evidence Database scale (PEDro). The certainty of findings was determined using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation tool. Of the initial yield of 563 articles, eight RCTs met the inclusion criteria. A diverse range of Pilates interventions and outcome measures were utilised to assess effects on core muscle activation and strength. The main finding was that Pilates is not inferior to equivalently dosed exercises, and can be superior to non-equivalent or no exercise, for improving core muscle strength as indicated by muscle thickness. There was emerging evidence that Pilates positively impacts core muscle strength and can be an effective intervention for people living with chronic low back pain.

Activity of Lower Limb Muscles During Squat With and Without Abdominal Drawing-in and Pilates Breathing

J Strength Cond Res 31(11): 3018-3023, 2017-The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of abdominal drawing-in and Pilates breathing on the activity of lower limb muscles during squats. Adults (n = 13, 22 ± 3 years old) with some Pilates experience performed three 60° squats under each of the following conditions in a random order: (I) normal breathing, (II) drawing-in maneuver with normal breathing, and (III) drawing-in maneuver with Pilates breathing. Peak-normalized surface electromyography of the rectus femoris, biceps femoris, gastrocnemius medialis, and tibialis anterior during the knee flexion and extension phases of squat exercises was analyzed. There were significant differences among the conditions during the knee flexion phase for the rectus femoris (p = 0.001), biceps femoris (p = 0.038), and tibialis anterior (p = 0.001), with increasing activation from conditions I to III. For the gastrocnemius medialis, there were significant differences among the conditions during the knee extension phase (p = 0.023), with increased activity under condition I. The rectus and biceps femoris activity was higher during the extension vs. flexion phase under conditions I and II. The tibialis anterior activity was higher during the flexion compared with the extension phase under all conditions, and the medial gastrocnemius activity was higher during the extension phase under condition I. Doing squats with abdominal drawing-in and Pilates breathing resulted in increased rectus, biceps femoris, and tibialis anterior activity during the flexion phase, increasing movement stability during squat exercises.

Abstract:The benefits of Pilates have been extensively researched for their impact on muscular, psychological, and cardiac health, as well as body composition, among other aspects. This study aims to investigate the influence of the Pilates method on the learning process, motor control, and neuromuscular trunk stabilization, specifically in both experienced and inexperienced practitioners. This semi-randomized controlled trial compares the level of experience among 36 Pilates practitioners in terms of motor control and learning of two Pilates-based skills: standing plank and side crisscross. Data will be collected using various assessment methods, including abdominal wall muscle ultrasound (AWMUS), shear wave elastography (SWE), gaze behavior (GA) assessment, electroencephalography (EEG), and video motion. Significant intra- and inter-individual variations are expected, due to the diverse morphological and psychomotor profiles in the sample. The adoption of both linear and non-linear analyses will provide a comprehensive evaluation of how neuromuscular structures evolve over time and space, offering both quantitative and qualitative insights. Non-linear analysis is expected to reveal higher entropy in the expert group compared to non-experts, signifying greater complexity in their motor control. In terms of stability, experts are likely to exhibit higher Lyapunov exponent values, indicating enhanced stability and coordination, along with lower Hurst exponent values. In elastography, experienced practitioners are expected to display higher transversus abdominis (TrA) muscle elasticity, due to their proficiency. Concerning GA, non-experts are expected to demonstrate more saccades, focus on more Areas of Interest (AOIs), and shorter fixation times, as experts are presumed to have more efficient gaze control. In EEG, we anticipate higher theta wave values in the non-expert group compared to the expert group. These expectations draw from similar studies in elastography and correlated research in eye tracking and EEG. They are consistent with the principles of the Pilates Method and other scientific knowledge in related techniques.

Muscle Activation Differs between Three Different Knee Joint-Angle Positions during a Maximal Isometric Back Squat Exercise

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to compare muscle activation of the lower limb muscles when performing a maximal isometric back squat exercise over three different positions. Fifteen young, healthy, resistance-trained men performed an isometric back squat at three knee joint angles (20°, 90°, and 140°) in a randomized, counterbalanced fashion. Surface electromyography was used to measure muscle activation of the vastus lateralis (VL), vastus medialis (VM), rectus femoris (RF), biceps femoris (BF), semitendinosus (ST), and gluteus maximus (GM). In general, muscle activity was the highest at 90° for the three quadriceps muscles, yet differences in muscle activation between knee angles were muscle specific. Activity of the GM was significantly greater at 20° and 90° compared to 140°. The BF and ST displayed similar activation at all joint angles. In conclusion, knee position alters muscles activation of the quadriceps and gluteus maximus muscles. An isometric back squat at 90° generates the highest overall muscle activation, yet an isometric back squat at 140° generates the lowest overall muscle activation of the VL and GM only.

This study aimed to compare core muscle electromyographic activity during a 45-second isometric contraction under the front plank exercise with a Total-body Resistance Exercise (TRX®) system attached to the upper limbs at varying heights above the ground: a) 10 cm (FP-TRX10); b) 35 cm (FP-TRX35); c) 60 cm (FP-TRX60); and d) 85 cm (FP-TRX85). Twelve physically active male volunteers (mean age: 23.58 ± 2.58 years; mean weight: 75.29 ± 4.23 kg; mean height: 177.04 ± 4.96 cm; mean body fat: 11.57 ± 2.63%), without neuromuscular disorders, participated. Electromyographic signals were recorded from the rectus abdominis (RA), external oblique (EO), internal oblique (IO), erector spinae (ES), and multifidus muscles. Maximum values (root mean square [RMS]) were normalized to maximum voluntary isometric contraction. Statistical analysis was conducted using GraphPad Prism software. Results indicated significantly higher electromyographic activity in the RA, EO, IO, and ES muscles (p < 0.05) during the FP-TRX10 exercise compared to FP-TRX85, with ES muscle activity significantly higher (p < 0.05) in FP-TRX10 than FP-TRX60. Lower TRX® system heights (e.g., FP-TRX10) elicited greater electromyographic activity in most core muscles, highlighting height as a crucial exercise progression factor. FP-TRX10 could represent an advanced step in core training, transitioning from the highest (FP-TRX85) to the lowest point (FP-TRX10) for optimal progression.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: A passive-control foot press trainer (PFPT) based on spring resistance aims to strengthen the ankle joint, similar to heel raise exercise (HRE). OBJECTIVE: To compare the muscle activity of the tibialis anterior, gastrocnemius medialis, gastrocnemius lateralis, rectus femoris, and biceps femoris between PFPT and HRE. METHODS: Eight healthy women performed four exercise conditions: PFPT forefoot (PFPT FF), PFPT rearfoot (PFPT RF), HRE at the floor level (HRE F), and HRE on the block (HRE B). During exercise, muscle activity was measured using surface electromyography and subsequently converted to percentages of maximum voluntary isometric contraction. RESULTS: Tibialis anterior showed the highest activity in PFPT FF, with significant difference from other conditions. Gastrocnemius medialis and lateralis demonstrated the highest activity in HRE B; Rectus femoris showed the highest activity in PFPT RF, showing significant differences from other conditions (p< 0.05). Biceps femoris exhibited the highest activity in HRE F and a significant difference from PFPT FF and PFPT RF. CONCLUSIONS: Lower leg and thigh muscle activity between PFPT and HRE had similarities and differences. Future studies should analyze the long-term effects of PFPT, including on patients with musculoskeletal and nervous system injuries.

Abstract:Introduction: The success of the karate player mainly depends on the balance and core strength. Improvement in these physical variables depends upon the type of exercise training used by the athletes. In the Indian context, there is lack of literature that supports the use of Pilates and Plyometric Training (PT) programme in training of Karate players. Therefore, to achieve success in the sport, best training method should be chosen by athletes or coaches. Aim: To compare and evaluate the effectiveness of two training programs Pilates and Plyometric on balance and core strength of National level male Karate athletes. Materials and Methods: The design of this study was experimental and sampling technique was simple random sampling. This study was conducted on a sample of 120 with 40 subjects in each group i.e., Experimental group A (Plyometric, N=40), Experimental group B (Pilates, N=40) and Control group C (N=40). The data was collected during 20th May 2018 to 10thFebruary 2020. The national level male karate players in the age group of 18 to 24 years with playing experience of five years were included in the study. The plyometric and pilates training were carried out in experimental groups for three days per week for eight weeks and no training method was implemented in the control group. Three reading were recorded, at the baseline, at the end of 4th and 8th week. Dynamic balance and core strength were the outcome measurements which were measured by modified Star Excursion Balance Test (mSEBT) and isometric core strength tests respectively. All the data was analysed by SPSS version 2.0 and the descriptive stats noted as mean±SD. ANOVA post-hoc analysis were calculated with p-value significance set at <0.05. Results: After eight weeks of intervention, both experimental groups showed significant improvement in dynamic balance and core strength comparisons between the groups. When the pre-test and post-test values of the experimental groups have been compared at the 4th week and 8th week of the study showed significant improvement (p-value <0.001) in the mSEBT and Core strength of the plyometric group compared to pilates and control group. Conclusion: The findings of the present study revealed that plyometrics and pilates both can improve balance and core strength of karate players but the PT method had more positive and statistically better effects on core strength and dynamic balance than pilates group in the view of sports performance.
The Effect of Ground Poles and Elastic Resistance Bands on Longissimus Dorsi and Rectus Abdominus Muscle Activity During Equine Walk and Trot

Abstract:Core strengthening and postural stability are desired outcomes of certain therapeutic exercises performed in horses. This study aimed to quantify changes in muscle activation at a walk and trot in horses traveling over eight consecutive ground poles evenly spaced (at 30 inches for walk and 48 inches for trot) in parallel fashion in a straight line, and with hindquarter and abdominal elastic resistance bands applied at 25% stretch. Surface electromyography (sEMG) data were collected for the longissimus dorsi and rectus abdominus muscles in six horses. A 2 × 2 repeated measures ANOVA was performed for each muscle to test for significant differences in differences in normalized average rectified values and maximum low pass signals. Within subject effects were reported, followed by post-hoc pairwise comparisons to evaluate differences between the conditions of with or without ground poles or elastic resistance bands. The use of ground poles at a walk resulted in a significant (p < .05) increase in the maximum low pass value bilaterally in the longissimus dorsi and rectus abdominus muscles, with an increase in the average rectified value bilaterally in the rectus abdominus muscles and right longissimus dorsi muscle. The use of ground poles at a trot resulted in a significant increase in the maximum low pass value bilaterally in the rectus abdominus muscles. The hindquarter and abdominal elastic resistance bands resulted in a respective 27% and 27.2% increase in the mean average rectified value of the left and right RA muscles; however this only reached statistical significance in the left RA (p < .05). These findings provide support regarding changes in muscle activation when using ground poles to increase core and epaxial muscle engagement. While a significant effect on core muscle activation was identified with the elastic resistance bands at a trot, further research is needed in this area to further characterize their effects on muscle activation.
Effect of abdominal drawing-in maneuver with prone hip extension on muscle activation of posterior oblique sling in normal adults

Abstract:[Purpose] There have been many studies on ipsilateral erector spinae in regard of prone hip extension (PHE). However, mediating methods have been focusing on the reinforcement of gluteus. Hereupon, this study is intended to identify how an increase of abdominal drawing-in maneuver influences on posterior oblique sling (POS) and suggest a mediating method to effectively reinforce them. [Participants and Methods] This study has been conducted on normal male (10) and female (10), and participants were asked to prove PHE exercise and abdominal drawing-in maneuver prone hip extension exercise (ADIM PHE). Surface electromyography (EMG) was recorded from the contralateral latissimus dorsi, ipsilateral erector spinae, ipsilateral gluteus maximus, and ipsilateral biceps femoris. A pared t-test was used to compare muscle activity POS. [Results] EMG activity of the contralateral latissimus dorsi, ipsilateral gluteus maximus was significantly greater performed ADIM PHE than PHE. As for ipsilateral erector spinae muscle, ipsilateral biceps femoris activation was lower in ADIM PHE than PHE. [Conclusion] According to the results of this study, abdominal drawing-in maneuver seems to be an important factor that influences on muscular activation of POS.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Body tilt changes could affect the intensity/difficulty of core stability exercises, but there is still a lack of knowledge about its impact. OBJECTIVE: To analyse the trunk muscles activation during prone plank exercises at different body tilts. METHODS: Twenty-four young adults who performed recreational gymnastic activities participated in this study. Electromyography activity of the rectus abdominis (RA), external oblique (EO), internal oblique (IO) and erector spinae (ES) was recorded during the performance of six variations of the prone plank exercise (planking with feet supported on the ground [conventional horizontal position] and planking with feet supported on wall bars at five different heights increasing the angle tilt) and an inverted position exercise. RESULTS: The RA, EO and IO activation in all prone plank variations were higher than those observed in the conventional prone plank. In addition, the coefficient of variation of the muscle activation increased with the declination angle, reaching the highest values in the inverted position for the RA and ES muscles. CONCLUSION: The results seem to indicate that the body tilt variation could be used as an easy and inexpensive strategy for modulating the neuromuscular demands and the motor control challenge during planking exercises.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Recent studies suggest that the inconsistent outcomes of patellofemoral pain (PFP) treatment may result from the unclear understanding of changes in the structures remote from the knee joint. Due to the crucial influence of core stability on the knee function, this study aimed to evaluate the recruitment pattern of core muscles in individuals with and without PFP.METHODS: Sixty women aged 18 to 40years, including 30 subjects diagnosed with PFP and 30 healthy controls rose on to their toes as quickly and strongly as possible in response to a sound alarm in standing position. Electromyographic onsets of the transversus abdominis (TrA)/internal oblique (IO), erector spinae (ES), and gluteus medius (GM) muscles were expressed relative to the electromyographic onset of the prime mover (i.e. soleus). Independent t-tests were performed to compare the onsets of each muscle between the groups. The nonparametric Friedman test and the post-hoc of Wilcoxon signed-rank test were used to describe the muscle activation pattern within the groups.RESULTS: The results revealed different recruitment patterns of the core muscles between the groups. In the healthy group the GM and TrA/IO contracted, almost simultaneously, in anticipation of the prime mover contraction (sol). However, in PFP subjects a significant delay in the contraction of TrA/IO changed the pattern of muscle activation.CONCLUSION: The findings demonstrate that muscular stabilization of spine is altered in the presence of PFP and suggest that treatment techniques aimed at improving core stability could be appropriate in the management of PFP.

Abstract:The origin of the Internet is credited to the United States Department of Defense7,26, which developed ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network) in the 1960s to allow researchers across the country to collaborate reliably with use of linked supercomputers in the event of a nuclear war or another emergency. Stanford University, the University of California at Santa Barbara, the University of Utah, and the University of California at Los Angeles were the first four universities to be connected to ARPANET, by means of telephone lines, in 1969. By 1971, twenty-three institutions were participating. In 1973, the first international connections were made. The first Usenet was founded in 1979, by students at the University of North Carolina and Duke University, as an electronic forum for discussing various topics. The term Internet was coined in 1981. In response to the growing body of relatively unorganized electronic information, the University of Minnesota released Gopher, the first software program for using the Internet, in 1991. Many educational institutions used Gopher to send and retrieve electronic data and communications. Information that was shared with use of Gopher was restricted to text and was presented to the user in a menu format. There were no images or multimedia capabilities. That same year, Tim Berners-Lee, working at the European Council for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Switzerland, developed the World Wide Web, which allowed computers to work together to transfer information more readily. He was able to improve communication between computers by standardizing the program language (hypertext markup language [HTML]) that they used and the way that files were created and stored (with use of hypertext transport protocol [HTTP]). Resistance training modalities: comparative analysis of effects on physical fitness, isokinetic muscle functions, and core muscle biomechanics

Abstract:Introduction: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of varied resistance training modalities on physical fitness components, body composition, maximal strength assessed by one-repetition maximum (1RM), isokinetic muscle functions of the shoulder and knee joints, and biomechanical properties of core muscles. Methods: Forty participants were randomly assigned to four groups: control group (CG, n = 10), compound set training group (CSG, n = 10), pyramid set training group (PSG, n = 10), and superset training group (SSG, n = 10). Excluding the CG, the other three groups underwent an 8-week resistance training program, three sessions per week, at 60%–80% of 1RM intensity for 60–90 min per session. Assessments included body composition, physical fitness components, 1RM, isokinetic muscle functions, and biomechanical properties (muscle frequency, stiffness, etc.) of the rectus abdominis and external oblique muscles. Results: The PSG demonstrated the most significant improvement in relative peak torque during isokinetic testing of the shoulder and knee joints. Compared to the CG, all exercise groups exhibited positive effects on back strength, sprint performance, 1RM, and core muscle biomechanics. Notably, the PSG showed superior enhancement in external oblique stiffness. However, no significant differences were observed among the exercise groups for rectus abdominis biomechanical properties. Discussion: Structured resistance training effectively improved maximal strength, functional performance, and core muscle biomechanics. The pyramidal training modality conferred specific benefits for isokinetic muscle functions and external oblique stiffness, suggesting its efficacy in enhancing force production capabilities and core stability.

Domestic and International Pilates Research Trends: A Review of Literature in Natural Science

Abstract:PURPOSE This study was conducted for the purpose of exploring the direction and quality of Pilates research in the future by comparing and analyzing research trends in the field of Pilates natural science at home and abroad.METHODS In order to analyze domestic and foreign Pilates research trends, we analyzed academic papers of the last 10 years (2013-2022) in the natural science field, and domestic papers were used as the keyword ‘Pilates’ using DP Pia, Kiss, and Riss, which are academic information services. A total of 105 papers were used by searching. For overseas studies, Pub med and Scholar were used, and only SCI and SCIE papers were collected and 129 papers were searched.RESULTS First, according to the comparative analysis of research trends by domestic and foreign fields, physiology (61%), kinematics (24.8%), and rehabilitation (14.2%) were found in the order of domestic, whereas in foreign countries, kinematics (34.9%) and physiology (33.3%) and rehabilitation (31.8%), a study with a relatively even distribution was conducted. Second, in the comparative analysis by study subject, domestic literature was the highest with 68.7% of studies targeting women, and was conducted separately by various age groups. Foreign fields, 40.9% of studies conducted by gender were found, and there were many studies that considered the characteristics of musculoskeletal disorders and metabolic diseases rather than gender. Third, looking at the comparison by research variable, studies have been conducted on various topics in physiology and kinetic dynamics. However, while domestic studies have focused on changes in body composition, foreign studies are actively conducting research on muscle function, musculoskeletal disorders, and rehabilitation.CONCLUSIONS In summary, it is judged that active research in the field of kinematics and rehabilitation should be conducted for more diverse subjects in the field of Pilates.
Comparison of Core Muscle Asymmetry Using Spine Balance 3D in Patients with Arthroscopic Shoulder Surgery: A STROBE-Compliant Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract:Background and Objectives: Joint immobilization after shoulder surgery can cause an imbalance in the periscapular muscles and affect the kinetic chain throughout the body. There is a difference in core muscle stability because of the asymmetry of the lower extremity muscles. However, the difference due to the asymmetry of the upper-extremity muscles has not been studied extensively. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of joint immobilization on the symmetry of the core muscles involved in proximal stability for distal mobility. Materials and Methods: Fifty-five patients who underwent arthroscopic shoulder surgery participated in this study. Core muscle asymmetry (CMA) was measured using a body tilt device. The evaluation variables were analyzed according to the surgical site based on the direction of the core muscle ratio and core muscle state ratio. Results: No differences in CMA were found based on the surgical site (p > 0.05). As a result of the additional subanalysis, significant differences in sex and postoperative day were established (p < 0.05). CMA was low during the intensive postoperative rehabilitation period. However, sex-related differences were greater in males than in females. Conclusions: The clinical results suggest that core muscle training is necessary to reduce CMA during rehabilitation after the immobilization period has elapsed.

Abstract:Compensatory dynamics are an important suite of mechanisms that can stabilize community and ecosystem attributes in systems subject to environmental fluctuations. However, few experimental investigations of compensatory dynamics have addressed these mechanisms in systems of real-world complexity, and existing evidence relies heavily on correlative analyses, retrospective examination, and experiments in simple systems. We investigated the potential for compensatory dynamics to stabilize plankton communities in plankton mesocosm systems of real-world complexity. We employed four types of perturbations including two types of nutrient pulses, shading, and acidification. To quantify how communities responded to these perturbations, we used a measure of community-wide synchrony combined with spectral analysis that allowed us to assess timescale-specific community dynamics, for example, whether dynamics were synchronous at some timescales but compensatory at others. The 150-d experiment produced 32-point time series of all zooplankton taxa in the mesocosms. We then used those time series to evaluate total zooplankton biomass as an aggregate property and to evaluate community dynamics. For three of our four perturbation types, total zooplankton biomass was significantly less variable in systems with environmental variation than in constant environments. For the same three perturbation types, community-wide synchrony was much lower in fluctuating environments than in the constant environment, particularly at longer timescales (periods ≈ 60 d). Additionally, there were strong negative correlations between population temporal variances and the level of community-wide synchrony. Taken together, these results strongly imply that compensatory interactions between species stabilized total biomass in response to perturbations. Diversity did not differ significantly across either treatments or perturbation types, thus ruling out several classes of mechanisms driven by changes in diversity. We also used several pieces of secondary evidence to evaluate the particular mechanism behind compensatory responses since a wide variety of mechanisms are hypothesized to produce compensatory dynamics. We concluded that fluctuation dependent endogenous cycles that occur as a consequence of consumer-resource interactions in competitive communities were the most likely explanation for the compensatory dynamics observed in our experiment. As with our previous work, scale-dependent dynamics were also a key to understanding compensatory dynamics in these experimental communities.
