Abstract:The development of electrochemical sensors with high sensitivity and accuracy is crucial for the detection of low-concentration heavy metal ions (HMIs) such as Pb(II) and Hg(II), which remains challenging. To address this issue, MgFe-layered double hydroxide (MgFe-LDH) is synthesized as an active layer on the conductive layer SnO2 loaded with nickel foam (NF) with the assistance of oxygen vacancies (OVs) to form an active-conductive layer stacked sensor. The results show that MgFe-LDH@SnO2/NF exhibits superior sensitivity (Pb(II): 417 μA/μM; Hg(II): 986 μA/μM), wider linear range (1.1–2.2 μM) and lower limits of detection (Pb(II): 1.21 nM; Hg(II): 3.7 nM). The high performance of our sensor is attributed to the improved ability to adsorb HMIs via OV reduced binding energy as well as the promoted rapid electron transport via SnO2 reduced charge transfer resistance, as evidenced by density functional theory and electrochemical measurements. Particularly, by combining the newly proposed tiny electrochemical detection network (ECDNet-tiny) and WeChat mini program, we have built a real-time detection platform for Pb(II) and Hg(II) pollution categories and concentrations, which shows high accuracy (0.98) and recovery rate (91.6 %-106.8 %) in the detection of actual water samples. The qualitative and quantitative calculations of electrochemistry is innovatively implemented by deep learning. Besides, smartphones could display detection results transmitted from cloud servers. Thus, this work provides a new sensor platform to improve the sensitivity, accuracy, and intelligence of detecting quintessential HMIs.
Fully Integrated Battery-Free and Flexible Electrochemical Tag for On-Demand Wireless in Situ Monitoring of Heavy Metals

Abstract:Migration of heavy metals from food contact materials to contained foods and drinks will cause severe health problems. The in situ analysis of the heavy metal ions inside these containers is in high demand. In this study, a fully integrated battery-free and flexible electrochemical tag is presented for wireless in situ detections of heavy metal ions in various containers. The circuit part of the tag is integrated with square wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV) technique and near field communication (NFC) module, enabling on-board electrochemical sensing, wireless data transmission, and power harvesting. The circuits showed high consistency with commercial electrochemical workstation in SWASV analysis. A screen-printed flexible electrode array is connected with the circuit board. The working electrodes were modified with gold and bismuth nanoparticles respectively, which showed high sensitivity, selectivity, linearity, and reproducibility in the detections of lead and cadmium. The tag achieved quantitative detections of heavy metal ions in various containers, including enamelled cup, ceramic teapot, and dark-red enameled pottery. With proper encapsulation, the miniaturized passive and flexible tag can be attached to the inside surface of various containers for a long time. The wireless detections of heavy metal ions can be achieved just with an NFC-enabled smartphone outside the container. The platform provides a simple and effective solution for in situ analysis of toxic and harmful substances, which can be widely used in the areas of food safety and water quality monitoring.

Abstract:Heavy-metal ions detection conventionally relies on standard instruments that are complicated, time-consuming and constrained to laboratories. To mitigate this problem, we developed a hand-held and cost-effective smartphone-integrated analysis platform that allows fast identification of heavy-metal ions pollution caused by industrial wastewater discharge. This portable platform integrates a colorimetric sensor array consisting of plasmonic nanocolorants and organic chromophores to detect typical heavy-metal ions at the ppm level within 15 s. The image of the colorimetric sensor array is transmitted to the Complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) imager of the smartphone via 96 individual optical fibers, generating RGB differential fingerprints and quantitatively analyzed by pattern recognition algorithms. Facile identification of 13 common heavy-metal ions (Hg2+, Cd2+, Cr6+, Pb2+, Ni2+, Se4+, Mg2+, Ba2+, Zn2+, As3+, Mn6+, Fe3+, Cu2+) was demonstrated using several different multivariate analyses of the digital data library, including principal component and hierarchical cluster analysis. Furthermore, we demonstrated the multiplexed detection and classification of 4 typical industrial wastewater models (Electroplating, Battery, Metallurgical, Pesticide waste-water) and real water samples with this portable platform, and achieved good discrimination and reproducibility. Combined with edge computing of smartphones and Internet-of-Things (IoT) cloud infrastructure, the portable platform shows feasible potential for pollution traceability, environmental monitoring, and water quality analysis.
On Site Determination of Heavy Metal Ions with Portable Electrochemical Instrument Based on Smartphone

Abstract:Introduction Most heavy metal ions are harmful to human body and may cause a variety of diseases, among which chromium(VI), cadmium, arsenic and their compounds are classified as Group 1 (human carcinogen) by IARC [1]. Heavy metal ions can enter the human body through direct drinking and the enrichment of food chain. Therefore, the allowed concentration of heavy metal ions are recommend by WHO, which are 50 μg/L for chromium(VI), 3 μg/L for cadmium, 10 μg/L for arsenic, respectively [2]. Compared with other methods, electrochemical method is gaining wide recognition and has the advantages of fast speed, simple operation and possibility of use in portable detection on site [3]. Therefore, a portable electrochemical instrument based on smartphone was designed, in order to detect the concentration of heavy metal ions in the field. Method A block diagram of the portable electrochemical instrument is shown in Fig. (a). The instruction of controlling electrochemical process is sent out by MCU and executed by potentiostat. The electrochemical signal obtained is simply processed and returned to MCU. The communication between MCU and smartphone software based on Android system is realized through Bluetooth. The completed printed circuit board (PCB) of the instrument is shown in Fig. (b). The determination of chromium(VI) is realized by gold nanoparticles modified gold electrode, in order to obtain a larger electrochemical response. The gold nanoparticle modification was achieved by applying a potential of -0.3 V for 120 seconds with stirring in 0.2 mmol/L chloroauric acid with 0.5 mol/L sulphuric acid, which is simple, stable and repeatable for on site determination. As shown in Fig. (c), the increase of electrode surface area can be observed by Atomic Force Microscope (AFM). After parameters optimization, the detection of Chromium(VI) was carried out in 0.3 mol/L nitric acid by linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) with a potential range of 0.8 V to 0.2 V. There is no accumulation process during detection, so it takes less than 10 seconds. Results and Conclusions The linear sweep voltammograms in chromium(VI) concentration range of 10 μg/L to 100 μg/L with a step of 10 μg/L are shown in Fig. (d). The standard curve of Cr(VI) is shown in Fig. (e), where it shows a linear relationship with the correlation coefficient of 0.98. A detection limit of 6.4 μg/L can be calculated, suggesting the sensitivity of the method for Cr(VI) detection. These results indicate that the portable electrochemical instrument based on smartphone can be a promising alternative for heavy metal ions detection on site. Abstract:Cadmium is a heavy metal pollutant in environment with high toxicity that severely threats human health. A simple and sensitive method for rapid detection of cadmium ions in water sample is of significant importance. In this paper, a colorimetric method based on aptamer-functionalized gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) for specific recognition were proposed to realize Cd2+ detection. AuNPs aggregate in high-salt solutions because of the shielding of salt to electrostatic repulsion among AuNPs, while aptamers can strengthen the stability of AuNPs and avoid the aggregation. After adding Cd2+ ions, the specific interaction between aptamers and Cd2+ leads to a decrease of free aptamers, which weakens the stability of the AuNPs and results in the color change of the solution. The colorimetric change can be rapidly captured and analyzed by a self-developed smartphone-based colorimetric system (SBCS) within 10 min, which implements the quantitative detection of Cd2+. The results show that Cd2+ ions can be detected with high selectivity and sensitivity with a linear range of 2-20 mu g/L and a detection limit of 1.12 mu g/L. Compared with other methods, the proposed approach features high sensitivity, high simplicity, easy implementation and high throughout, which provides a promising means for in-situ determination of Cd2+ in practical applications.

Abstract:An automated electronic tongue instrumentation has been developed for in-situ concentration determination of trace heavy metals in water environment. The electronic tongue contains two main parts. The sensor part consists of a silicon-based Hg-coated Au microelectrodes array (MEA) for the detection of Zn(II), Cd(II), Pb(II) and Cu(II) and a multiple light-addressable potentiometric sensor (MLAPS) for the detection of Fe(III) and Cr(VI). The control part employs pumps, valves and tubes to enable the pick-up and pretreatment of aqueous sample. The electronic tongue realized detection of the six metals mentioned above at part-per-billion (ppb) level without manual operation. This instrumentation will have wide application in quick monitoring and prediction the heavy metal pollution in lakes and oceans.

Abstract:Qualitative and quantitative analysis of trace heavy metals in aqueous environment are rapidly assuming significance along with the rapid development of industry. In this paper, gold microelectrode array (MEA) plated with mercury film was used for simultaneous voltammetric detection of zinc, cadmium, lead and copper ions in water. The electrochemical behavior and the actual surface area of the MEA were investigated by cyclic voltammetry in K3[Fe(CN)6] . Electrochemical impedance spectrum (EIS) was utilized to examine the deposition of mercury on the electrode surface. Based on anodic stripping voltammetry, mercury film– Au MEA was applied to the detection of heavy metals in artificial analyte, where good calibrate linearity was obtained for cadmium, lead and copper ions, but with zinc exhibiting poor linearity.

Abstract:Heavy metals, which accumulate into human body and cause many diseases for never degradation, can lead to undesirable hazard to human being. Novel all-state mercury ion selective electrode (Hg-ISE) and Cadmium ion selective electrode (Cd-ISE) are prepared and analysis instrument based on the two electrodes is developed. The detection limit of Hg-ISE is 3.31 times 10-6 mol/L with the scope of 29.3 mV/decade in the linearity of calibration curve. The detection limit of Cd-ISE is 5.56 times 10-6 mol/L with the scope of 27.5 mV/decade. Two electrodes with simple structure are convenient to be used. The water sample to measure is only needed to 10 ml. When the concentration of heavy metal is higher, it needs only several seconds that response voltage is able to keep stable. Test results show the two electrodes have advantages of high chemical stabilization and selectivity, repetitiveness of voltage, corrosion resistance. The analysis instrument has features of short detection time, sufficient function, convenient interface and stable performance.

Abstract:Heavy metals are one class of insidious contaminants that can do harm to the whole ecological systems to various extents even if they are present in extremely minute quantities,that is because their nonbiodegradable nature and ability to persist for long periods.This paper fabricated an electrochemical sensor for simultaneously detection of Zn(Ⅱ),Cd(Ⅱ),Pb(Ⅱ) and Cu(Ⅱ) in aqueous solutions based on the Hg-plated glass carbon disk electrode.Tests performing with differential pulse anode stripping voltammetry(DPASV) showed their detection limits were 2.0μg/L,1.9μg/L,0.8μg/L and 0.7μg/L,respectively. In comparison with other heavy metals detection methods,the electrochemical sensor can detect multi-element heavy metals simultaneously with higher detection speed,lower cost,little space,and it's easier to operate and can implement in-situ auto analysis.

Abstract:To realize heavy metal detection in filed aquatic environment,a method of in-situ heavy metal detection based on wireless sensor network and micro electrode array is presented.A homemade band micro electrode array(MEA)is introduced to detect heavy metal ions as Zn2+,Pb2+ and Cu2+.Automatic heavy metal monitoring instrument is developed based on the band MEA.In addition,wireless sensor network for field heavy metal monitoring can be constituted by distributed instruments via 802.11 b/g standards.The instrument is certified by standard heavy metal solutions with different concentrations and shows good precision.Transmission range and network organizing are validated in nature water area.Finally,measuring precision of the instrument has been validated by monitoring natural Zn2+,Pb2+ and Cu2+ concentrations and comparing with atomic absorption spectrometry(AAS).

Abstract:Fabricating portable devices for the determination of heavy metal ions is an ongoing challenge. Here, a 3D printing approach was adopted to fabricate a microfluidic electrochemical sensor with the desired shape in which the model for velocity profiles in microfluidic cells was built and optimized by the finite element method (FEM). The electrode in the microfluidic cell was a flexible screen-printed electrode (SPE) modified with porous Mn2O3 derived from manganese containing metal-organic framework (Mn-MOF). The microfluidic device presented superior electrochemical detection properties toward heavy metal ions. The calibration curves at the modified SPE for Cd(II) and Pb(II) covered two linear ranges varying from 0.5 to 8 and 10 to 100 μg L-1, respectively. The limits of detection were estimated to be 0.5 μg L-1 for Cd(II) and 0.2 μg L-1 for Pb(II), which were accordingly about 6 and 50 times lower than the guideline values proposed by the World Health Organization. Furthermore, the microfluidic device was connected to iPad via a USB to enable real-time household applications. Additionally, the sensing system exhibited a better stability and reproducibility compared with traditional detecting system which offered a promising prospect for the detection of heavy metal ions especially in household and resource-limited occasions.

Abstract:It's essential to exploit a portable wireless integrated sensing platform for field-simultaneous, on-site detection of heavy metal ions pollution, which has been shown to cause serious ecological and health risks even under trace levels, including Cd (II) and Pb (II) ions. We developed a portable sensing platform, consisting of an integrated screen-printed electrode (SPE) with the calcium/aluminum-layered double hydroxide (CaAl-LDH) nanocomposite based on carboxyl functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs-COOH), a hand-held wireless electrochemical potentiostat and a tablet with a specially-designed app, for field simultaneous rapid detection of both Cd (II) and Pb (II) in water environmental sample. The CaAl-LDH was produced through a facilely hydrothermal method, and the CaAl-LDH nanocomposite with MWCNTs-COOH was prepared by a one-step ultrasonic route, which demonstrated superior sensing performance for simultaneous determination of both Cd (II) and Pb (II) with a broad detection range (2-250 μg L-1 for Cd (II) and 5-250 μg L-1 Pb (II)) and low limit of detection (LOD) (0.96 μg L-1 Cd (II) and 0.74 μg L-1 for Pb (II)). Furthermore, the proposed tablet-operated portable wireless sensing platform was utilized for detection of both Cd (II) and Pb (II) in farmland irrigation canals with acceptable recoveries.

Abstract:<h2>Abstract</h2>Heavy metal ions, one of the most important pollutants today, widely exist in the environment, and can cause different degrees of damage to the ecological environment and human body. In the face of the increasingly severe situation of heavy metal pollution, it is urgent to develop a rapid, robust, sensitive, and convenient method for heavy metal ions detection. Compared with the traditional detection methods, the screen-printed electrochemical sensor based on nanomaterials has the advantages of rapid detection speed, high sensitivity, high selectivity, and high stability, which make it become the preferred method for the detection of heavy metal ions. This review presents the recent progress in the field of heavy metal ions determination using various nanomaterials-enabled screen-printed electrochemical sensors. The fabrication strategy and analytical performance of carbon nanomaterials (such as carbon nanotubes and graphene), metal nanomaterials (such as gold nanoparticles and silver nanoparticles), and metal oxide nanomaterials (such as Fe3O4 nanoparticles and Bi2O3 nanoparticles)-enabled disposable sensors for electrochemical determination of heavy metal ions are summarized systematically. In addition, the application of these sensors in real samples for the analysis of heavy metal ions is discussed in detail, and the future development in this field is also provided.

In situ deposition of bismuth on pre-anodized screen-printed electrode for sensitive determination of Cd2+ in water and rice with a portable device

Abstract:Electrochemical detection is favorable for the rapid and sensitive determination of heavy metal cadmium. However, the detection sensitivity needs to be further improved, and a portable, low-cost device is needed for on-site detection. Herein, an in-situ bismuth modified pre-anodized screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE) was developed for Cd2+ determination by square wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV). The in-situ bismuth modification enhances the enrichment of Cd2+, and together with pre-anodization improve the electron transfer rate of electrode, thus enhancing the detection sensitivity. The electrode modification method combines pre-anodization and in-situ bismuth deposition, which is very easy and effective. Furthermore, a self-made PSoC Stat potentiostat coupled with a stirring device was fabricated for portable and low-cost electrochemical detection. After comprehensive optimization, the developed method can reach a testing time of 3 min, a detection limit of 3.55 μg/L, a linear range of 5-100 μg/L, and a recovery rate of 91.7-107.1% in water and rice samples for Cd2+ determination. Therefore, our method holds great promise for the rapid, sensitive and on-site determination of Cd2+ in food samples.
Fill, Fold, Photo: Preconcentration and Multiplex Detection of Trace Level Heavy Metals in Water

Abstract:Heavy metal contamination is an increasing global threat to human and environmental health, particularly in resource-limited areas. Traditional platforms for heavy metal detection are labor intensive and expensive and require lab facilities. While paper-based colorimetric sensors offer a simpler approach, their sensitivity limitations prevent them from meeting legislative requirements for many metals. Existing preconcentration systems, on the other hand, can achieve lower detection limits but typically focus on analyzing only one metal, making comprehensive monitoring difficult. We address these limitations by introducing a low-cost preconcentration system coupled with colorimetric analysis for the simultaneous detection of seven metal ions at low ppb levels without the need for external equipment outside a smartphone. The system achieved detection limits of 15 ppb (Ni(II)), 7 ppb (Cu(II)), 2 ppb (Fe(III)), 20 ppb (Cr(VI)), 13 ppb (Pb(II)), 26 ppb (Hg(II)), and 15 ppb (Mn(II)) with six out of seven limits of detection values falling well below EPA regulatory guidelines for drinking water. The user-friendly Fill, Fold, Photo approach eliminates complex pretreatment steps. Smartphone-based detection offers portable quantification within seconds. Employing masking strategies ensured higher selectivity for each assay on the card, while our packaging protocols enable system stability for over 4 weeks of study, facilitating mass production and deployment within a realistic time frame. To validate the sensor's performance in real-world scenarios, the sensor was tested with environmental water samples. The sensor demonstrated good recovery, ranging from 77% to 94% compared to the standard ICP-MS method. Furthermore, spike recovery analysis confirmed the sensor's accuracy, with a relative standard deviation (RSD) of less than 15%. This technology holds significant promise for future development as a convenient, portable solution for field-based monitoring of a broad spectrum of water contaminants, including pesticides, PFAS, fertilizers, and beyond.

Abstract:This study develops a syringe‐based, semi‐automatic environmental monitoring device for on‐site detection of harmful heavy metal ions in water. This portable device consists of a spring‐embedded syringe and a polydimethylsiloxane membrane‐based flow regulator for semi‐automatic fix‐and‐release fluidic valve actuation, and a paper‐based analytical device with two kinds of gold nanoclusters for sensitive Hg2+ and Co2+ ion detection, respectively. This portable device consists of a spring‐embedded syringe and a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) membrane‐based flow regulator for semi‐automatic fix‐and‐release fluidic valve actuation, and a paper‐based analytical device (PAD) with two kinds of gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) for sensitive Hg2+ and Co2+ ion detection, respectively. The thickness of the elastic PDMS membrane can be adjusted to stabilize and modulate the flow rates generated by the pushing force provided by the spring attached to the plunger. Also, different spring constants can drastically alter the response time. People of all ages can extract the fix‐volume sample solutions and then release them to automatically complete the detection process, ensuring high reliability and repeatability. The PAD comprises two layers of modified paper, and each layer is immobilized with bovine serum albumin‐capped gold nanoclusters (R‐AuNCs) and glutathione‐capped gold clusters (G‐AuNCs), respectively. The ligands functionalized on the surface of the AuNCs not only can fine‐tune the optical properties of the nanoclusters but also enable specific and simultaneous detection of Hg2+ and Co2+ ions via metallophilic Au+–Hg2+ interaction and the Co2+–thiol complexation effect, respectively. The feasibility of the device for detecting heavy metal ions at low concentrations in various environmental water samples is demonstrated. The Hg2+ and Co2+ ions can be seen simultaneously within 20 min with detection limits as low as 1.76 nm and 0.27 μm, respectively, lower than those of the regulatory restrictions on water by the US Environmental Protection Agency and the European Union. we expect this sensitive, selective, portable, and easy‐to‐use device to be valid for on‐site multiple heavy metal ion pollution screenings in resource‐constrained settings.

Abstract:We are presenting a strategy for the fabrication of disposable screen-printed electrodes modified with mercury nano-droplets and capable of sensing heavy metal ions. They were prepared by coating electrodes with a mixture of multi-walled carbon nanotubes and chitosan, this followed by adsorption of mercury. The resulting sensor was characterized by cyclic voltammetry and impedance spectroscopy. Also the effects caused by adsorption of mercury were investigated. It is shown that square wave anodic stripping voltammetry enables simultaneous determination of cadmium(II), lead(II) and copper(II), for which detection limits of 12, 23 and 20 nM, respectively, are found. Relative standard deviations for ten determinations at 0.6 µM concentrations of these ions are in the range of 3.0 to 5.7%. The applicability was tested by analyzing river water and showed recoveries between 94.1 and 104.6%, thus demonstrating its utility for in-field monitoring of these heavy metal ions.
Smartphone-based Wearable Microfluidic Electrochemical Sensor for On-Site Monitoring of Copper Ions in Sweat Without External Driving.

Abstract:The directional movement of liquid without exogenous drive can show great potential in portable electro-chemical platforms. Herein, we developed a portable electrochemical platform that drove electrolyte flow by surface tension gradient, which can realize collection of electrolyte, flow preconcentration and electrochemical detection of Cu2+. The induced graphene electrodes (LIG) was fabricated using laser direct writing, and flower cluster shaped ZnO nanorods (FC-ZnONRs) were prepared and modified on LIG, which provided a large amount of space for electrolyte to shuttled between the holes of LIG and ZnO, and increased the electrochemical active sites and electrons transport ability. The effect of surface tension gradients driving fluid flow could accelerate preconcentration, shorten detection time (save 300 s of preconcentration time) and enhance electrochemical responses in synergy with the 3D FC-ZnONRs/LIG. The microfluidic system possessed excellent performance for detection of Cu2+ ranged from 1 & mu;g L-1 to 2100 & mu;g L-1 with a low detection limit (LOD) of 0.0368 & mu;g L-1 and high sensitivity of 0.414 & mu;A (& mu;g L-1)-1 cm-2. Additionally, this portable microfluidic system was successfully worn on the skin for analysing Cu2+ in human sweat, and the results showed good consistency with inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). This novel sensing system provides a sample collection, rapid detection, low cost and easy-to-operate strategy for heavy metal ions analysis in real samples and shows huge application prospects in point-of-care testing.

Abstract:In this study, an ultramicro interdigital electrode array chip (UIEA) was designed and fabricated by using Micro-Electro-Mechanical systems (MEMS) technology, and a portable detection system, using the chip for determination of heavy-metal ions in water, was developed. The working electrode of the UIEA was modified with gold nanoparticles by electrodeposition. The detection sensitivity of the UIEA chip for copper ions was 0.0138 μA·L·μg−1, with the linear range of 0–400 μg/L and the detection limit of 18.89 μg/L (3σ), which was better than that of the compared columnar glassy carbon electrode. The results of the interference experiment verified that the UIEA chip has a certain anti-interference ability against common heavy-metal ions in water, such as Pb2+, Zn2+, and Mg2+ ions. The standard addition method was used to investigate the performance of the developed s ystem for copper ion determination in real water. The recovery range from 87.5% to 94.7% was achieved.

Abstract:Heavy metal contamination in water and herbal medicine poses a global threat to human health. There is a pressing need for the development of a simple and rapid method for simultaneous quantification. In this study, a ratiometric electrochemical sensor was first constructed using a hybrid material composed of methylene blue functionalized metal–organic framework (MB-UiO66-NH 2 ) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). Then, MB-UiO66-NH 2 /MWCNTs harnessed the large specific surface area of UiO66-NH 2 and good conductivity of MWCNTs, resulting in a sensor with superior analytical performance for Cd 2+ , Pb 2+ , and Hg 2+ detection. Meanwhile, the ratiometric probe uses MB as an internal reference, with the ratio signal ( Imetalion/IMB ) serving as output. This ratiometric electrochemical sensor was able to enhance the reproducibility and reliability and eliminate interference, particularly in complex environments. Importantly, based on this ratiometric electrochemical platform, the low detection limit were 11.08 nM for Cd 2+ , 5.47 nM for Pb 2+ , and 6.42 nM for Hg 2+ , which realized the simultaneous, sensitive, and reliable detection. In addition, it has been successfully applied in real water and representative herbal medicine sample analysis. Therefore, this work provides a new approach for the risk assessment of heavy metal accumulation, which is conducive to safeguarding people's lives and health.
