Abstract:Triggering the anionic redox chemistry in layered oxide cathodes has emerged as a paradigmatic approach to efficaciously boost the energy density of sodium-ion batteries. However, their practical applications are still plagued by irreversible lattice oxygen release and deleterious structure distortion. Herein, a novel P2-Na0.76Ca0.05[Ni0.23□0.08Mn0.69]O2 cathode material featuring joint cationic and anionic redox activities, where native vacancies are produced in the transition-metal (TM) layers and Ca ions are riveted in the Na layers, is developed. Random vacancies in the TM sites induce the emergence of nonbonding O 2p orbitals to activate anionic redox, which is confirmed by systematic electrochemical measurements, ex situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, in situ X-ray diffraction, and density functional theory computations. Benefiting from the pinned Ca ions in the Na sites, a robust layered structure with the suppressed P2-O2 phase transition and enhanced anionic redox reversibility upon charge/discharge is achieved. Therefore, the electrode displays exceptional rate capability (153.9 mA h g−1 at 0.1 C with 74.6 mA h g−1 at 20 C) and improved cycling life (87.1% capacity retention at 0.1 C after 50 cycles). This study provides new opportunities for designing high-energy-density and high-stability layered sodium oxide cathodes by tuning local chemical environments.

Abstract:P2-type Mn-based layered oxides have emerged as one of the most promising cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries owing to their advantages of facile preparation and high theoretical capacity. However, challenges such as phase transition and irreversible oxygen release during cycling often lead to rapid structural distortion and the formation of oxygen vacancies, ultimately resulting in rapid capacity decay. Herein, a covalency modulation strategy is adopted to address these challenges and successfully achieved a stable P2-type Mn-based layered oxide by introducing strong covalent Ni─O bonds. The robust Ni─O motif plays a crucial role in maintaining the rigidity of transition metal (TM) layered frameworks, which efficiently alleviates the structural distortion and degradation of the coordination environments of local TM sites, thereby achieving durable structural stiffness over extended cycles. In addition, the strong covalent Ni─O bonds can also stabilize the local oxygen environment, effectively suppressing the irreversible oxygen release. Benefiting from these advancements, the as-designed Na0.6Mg0.15Mn0.7Ni0.15O2 cathode displays a full solid-solution behavior with a low volume change of only 0.9% and an enhanced reversibility of lattice oxygen redox (OR) reaction. This investigation emphasizes the crucial role of covalency modulation in regulating OR chemistry and structural integrity to achieve high-energy-density Mn-based layered oxides.

Abstract:Cathode materials with high energy density, long cycle life, and low cost are of top priority for energy storage systems. The Li‐rich transition metal (TM) oxides achieve high specific capacities by redox reactions of both the TM and oxygen ions. However, the poor reversible redox reaction of the anions results in severe fading of the cycling performance. Herein, the vacancy‐containing Na4/7[Mn6/7(◻Mn)1/7]O2 (◻Mn for vacancies in the MnO slab) is presented as a novel cathode material for Na‐ion batteries. The presence of native vacancies endows this material with attractive properties including high structural flexibility and stability upon Na‐ion extraction and insertion and high reversibility of oxygen redox reaction. Synchrotron X‐ray absorption near edge structure and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies demonstrate that the charge compensation is dominated by the oxygen redox reaction and Mn3+/Mn4+ redox reaction separately. In situ synchrotron X‐ray diffraction exhibits its zero‐strain feature during the cycling. Density functional theory calculations further deepen the understanding of the charge compensation by oxygen and manganese redox reactions and the immobility of the Mn ions in the material. These findings provide new ideas on searching for and designing materials with high capacity and high structural stability for novel energy storage systems. A novel air‐stable layer‐structured Mn‐based oxide Na4/7[Mn6/7(◻Mn)1/7]O2 is presented. The presence of native vacancies gives this material high structural flexibility and stability upon Na‐ion extraction and insertion and enables high reversibility of oxygen redox reactions. The findings provide new ideas for selecting and designing new cathode materials with high capacity and structural stability.

Abstract:The balance between cationic redox and oxygen redox in layer-structured cathode materials is an important issue for sodium batteries to obtain high energy density and considerable cycle stability. Oxygen redox can contribute extra capacity to increase energy density, but results in lattice instability and capacity fading caused by lattice oxygen gliding and oxygen release. In this work, reversible Mn2+/Mn4+ redox is realized in a P3-Na0.65Li0.2Co0.05Mn0.75O2 cathode material with high specific capacity and structure stability via Co substitution. The contribution of oxygen redox is suppressed significantly by reversible Mn2+/Mn4+ redox without sacrificing capacity, thus reducing lattice oxygen release and improving the structure stability. Synchrotron X-ray techniques reveal that P3 phase is well maintained in a wide voltage window of 1.5-4.5 V vs. Na+/Na even at 10 C and after long-term cycling. It is disclosed that charge compensation from Co/Mn-ions contributes to the voltage region below 4.2 V and O-ions contribute to the whole voltage range. The synergistic contributions of Mn2+/Mn4+, Co2+/Co3+, and O2-/(On)2- redox in P3-Na0.65Li0.2Co0.05Mn0.75O2 lead to a high reversible capacity of 215.0 mA h g-1 at 0.1 C with considerable cycle stability. The strategy opens up new opportunities for the design of high capacity cathode materials for rechargeable batteries. Abstract:Utilizing anionic redox activity within layered oxide cathode materials represents a transformational avenue for enabling high‐energy‐density rechargeable batteries. However, the anionic oxygen redox reaction is often accompanied with irreversible dynamic oxygen evolution, leading to unfavorable structural distortion and thus severe voltage decay and rapid capacity fading. Herein, we propose and validate that the dynamic oxygen evolution can be effectively suppressed through the synergistic surface CaTiO3 dielectric coating and bulk site‐selective Ca/Ti co‐doping for layered Na2/3Ni1/3Mn2/3O2. The surface dielectric coating layer not only suppresses the surface oxygen release but more importantly inhibits the bulk oxygen migration by creating a reverse electric field through dielectric polarization. Meanwhile, the site‐selective doping of oxygen‐affinity Ca into Na layers and Ti into transition metal layers effectively stabilizes the bulk oxygen through modulating the O 2p band center and the oxygen migration barrier. Such a strategy also leads to a reversible structural evolution with a low volume change because of the enhanced structural integrality and improved oxygen rigidity. Because of these synergistic advantages, the designed electrode exhibits greatly suppressed voltage decay and capacity fading upon long‐term cycling. Abstract:The role of Li and Co dual substitution is investigated on the structure and electrochemical properties of P2‐type NaxMnO2 layered cathode material. Li provides possibility for oxygen redox activity due to partial migration from transition metal layer, and Co is crucial for improving conductivity. Oxygen‐redox‐based‐layered cathode materials are of great importance in realizing high‐energy‐density sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs) that can satisfy the demands of next‐generation energy storage technologies. However, Mn‐based‐layered materials (P2‐type Na‐poor Nay[AxMn1−x]O2, where A = alkali ions) still suffer from poor reversibility during oxygen‐redox reactions and low conductivity. In this work, the dual Li and Co replacement is investigated in P2‐type‐layered NaxMnO2. Experimentally and theoretically, it is demonstrated that the efficacy of the dual Li and Co replacement in Na0.6[Li0.15Co0.15Mn0.7]O2 is that it improves the structural and cycling stability despite the reversible Li migration from the transition metal layer during de‐/sodiation. Operando X‐ray diffraction and ex situ neutron diffraction analysis prove that the material maintains a P2‐type structure during the entire range of Na+ extraction and insertion with a small volume change of ≈4.3%. In Na0.6[Li0.15Co0.15Mn0.7]O2, the reversible electrochemical activity of Co3+/Co4+, Mn3+/Mn4+, and O2‐/(O2)n‐ redox is identified as a reliable mechanism for the remarkable stable electrochemical performance. From a broader perspective, this work highlights a possible design roadmap for developing cathode materials with optimized cationic and anionic activities and excellent structural stabilities for SIBs.

Abstract:P2-type layered NaxMnO2 cathode shows great potential in practical sodium ion batteries, especially for grid-level applications due to its eco-friendly and cost-effective sodium and manganese resources, and high theoretical specific capacity. However, several obstacles including severe phase transitions of P2-O2 and P2-P2 ', low redox potential of Mn3+/Mn4+, disproportionation reaction and Jahn-Teller distortion of Mn3+, and deficient behavior have already hindered its practical applications. Herein, a Li, Cu co-doping strategy to tackle the mentioned obstacles by activating the oxygen redox is presented. The Li, Cu co-doped material exhibits solid solution reaction without any phase transitions as proved by in situ X-ray diffraction measurement and reduces the dissolution of active manganese element. With this modification treatment, it can dramatically raise the cycling stability from 30.4% to 80.1% after 150 cycles and simultaneously improves the deficient behavior due to the capacity contribution of oxygen redox at high voltage. More importantly, the coin-cell type sodium ion full cell assembled with this cathode and commercial hard carbon anode delivers a promising energy density of 225.1 Wh kg(-1).
Superiority of native vacancies in activating anionic redox in P2-type Na2/3[Mn7/9Mg1/9□1/9]O2

Abstract:Anionic redox is another way of charge compensation to boost the energy density of the cathode materials. In addition to the conventional Li–O–Li configurations in the well-known layered Li-rich transition metal oxides, both the Na–O–Mg and Na–O-vacancy configurations have been found effective in triggering the oxygen redox for charge compensation. Therefore, it will be interesting to compare their superiority in activating the anionic redox reaction. Herein, P2-type Na2/3[Mn7/9Mg1/9□1/9]O2 (□ for vacancy) is designed that contains both vacancies and magnesium ions in its transition metal (TM) layer. The co-existence of equal quantity of vacancies and Mg2+ ions makes it possible to compare the superiority of these two configurations. Soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations demonstrate that the vacancies are superior in facilitating the oxygen redox at low voltage. In addition, the asymmetry and flexibility of the vacancy-containing TMO6 octahedrons ensure the high structural stability of the material. It delivers a reversible capacity of 212 mAh g−1 between 1.5 and 4.5 V and the reversibility of oxygen redox in 50 cycles between 2.1 V and 4.4 V. The capacity retention is good in 50 cycles between 2.1 V and 4.4 V. The strategy of introducing vacancies in the TMO2 slab to stabilize the structure and to enhance the anionic redox will inspire new ideas in seeking and designing advanced cathode materials with superior performances.

Abstract:The combination of anionic and cationic activities within Li-rich materials breaks through the traditional capacity limitation and achieves high-energy-density batteries. However, the utilization of anionic oxygen redox reactions always leads to detrimental lattice oxygen release, which accelerates structural distortion and electrochemical performance deterioration. In contrast to the typical Li-O-Li configuration in Li-rich layered oxides, not only can oxygen redox behaviors be triggered within layered Li-4/7[square Mn-1/7(6/7)]O-2 (square: Mn vacancy) with Li-O-vacancy configuration, but lattice oxygen loss can be effectively suppressed. Upon Li + (de)intercalations, Mn vacancy within the TM layer also enables reversible structural evolution and Li migration processes, further boosting high output capacity and long-term cycling stability. Besides, not only can the irreversible/reversible anionic/cationic redox reactions be clearly unraveled, but their capacity distributions can be roughly quantified upon cycling. Overall, our findings demonstrate that the introduction of Mn vacancy provides a promising configuration to achieve high-capacity cathode candidates for next-generation Li-ion batteries.
Regulating Oxygen Redox Chemistry through the Synergistic Effect of Transition‐Metal Vacancy and Substitution Element for Layered Oxide Cathodes

Abstract:The synergistic effect of transition‐metal (TM) vacancy and selective substitution element in the TMO2 layers for stimulating and stabilizing the OR chemistry of P2‐type layered oxide cathodes has been revealed through multimodal operando synchrotron characterizations and electrochemical investigations, providing an effective avenue for designing high‐performance cathodes employing anionic redox. Reversible oxygen redox (OR) is considered as a paradigmatic avenue to boost the energy densities of layered oxide cathodes. However, its activation is largely coupled with the local coordination environment around oxygen, which is usually accompanied with irreversible oxygen release and unfavorable structure distortion. Herein, it is revealed that the synergistic effect of transition‐metal (TM) vacancy and substitution element for modulating the OR activity and reversibility of layered Na0.67MnO2 through multimodal operando synchrotron characterizations and electrochemical investigations. It is disclosed that TM vacancy can not only suppress the complicated phase transition but also stimulate the OR activity by creating nonbonding O 2p states via the Na─O─vacancy configurations. Notably, the substitution element plays a decisive role for regulating the reversibility of vacancy‐boosted OR activity: the presence of strong Al─O bonds stabilizes the Mn‐O motifs by sharing O with Al in the rigid Mn─O─Al frameworks, which mitigates TM migration and oxygen release induced by TM vacancy, leading to enhanced OR reversibility; while the introduction of weak Zn─O bonds exacerbates TM migration and irreversible oxygen release. This work clarifies the critical role of both TM vacancy and substitution element for regulating the OR chemistry, providing an effective avenue for designing high‐performance cathodes employing anionic redox.

Restraining Oxygen Loss and Suppressing Structural Distortion in a Newly Ti-Substituted Layered Oxide P2-Na0.66Li0.22Ti0.15Mn0.63O2

Abstract:Anionic redox reveals to be a promising strategy to effectively improve the energy density of layered metal oxide cathodes for sodium-ion batteries. However, lattice oxygen loss and derived structural distortion severely hinder its practical application. Herein, combined with anionic and cationic redox activities, we developed a layered structure P2-type Na0.66Li0.22Ti0.15Mn0.63O2 cathode, delivering an initial discharge capacity of 228 mAh g(-1) and highly reversible structural evolution as well as improved cyclability. On the basis of comprehensive comparison with Ti-free P2-Na0.66Li0.22Mn0.78O2, both oxygen-related negative behaviors (irreversible O-2 evolution and superoxo-related parasitic production) and Mn-related Jahn-Teller distortion have been effectively restrained by simultaneously suppressing both oxygen loss and the participation of Mn4+/Mn3+ redox. Not limited to discovering excess capacity derived from anionic oxidation up charging, our findings not only highlight an effective strategy to stabilize anionic and cationic redox activities but also pave the way for the further improvement of Na-deficient layered materials for high-energy sodium-ion batteries.
Simultaneously Enhancing Structural Stability and Cationic Redox in Na0.67Mn0.75Fe0.25O2 through a Synergy of Multisite Substitution

Abstract:P2-type Na0.67Mn0.75Fe0.25O2 cathode materials with low cost and high specific capacity have aroused much interest for sodium-ion batteries. Nevertheless, the cyclic and structural stabilities need to be improved for practical application. Herein, we tune the activity and reversibility of the cationic redox and the structure stability in Na0.67Mn0.75Fe0.25O2 by doping Mg/Ca/F into multi-Na/TM/O sites, respectively. The capacity performance at a high rate and cyclic stability are significantly enhanced. The mechanism of the synergy has been revealed by means of an X-ray photoelectronic spectrometer, neutron powder diffraction, ex situ/in situ X-ray diffraction, and so on. The improvement of the rate performance is mostly due to the broadening of the interlayer spacing caused by the element doping and the decrease of the Na-ion diffusion barrier, which facilitates Na-ion diffusion. The reduced transitional metal (TM)-O bond length demonstrates that the bonding energy has been strengthened, which benefits the structural stability and the cycling stability. Moreover, the synergy of multisite substitution suppresses the P2-OP4 phase transition at a high voltage and further improves the cycle stability. The Mg doping also activates Mn3+/Mn4+ redox and increases the intensity of Mn3+/Mn4+ redox. The ratio of Mn3+/Mn4+ is reduced by Ca substitution. Therefore, the Jahn-Teller effect, which is harmful to the structural stability, is restrained. The insights into the synergy of multisite substitution proposed in this study may also be helpful in the design of other cathode materials.
High‐Entropy and Superstructure‐Stabilized Layered Oxide Cathodes for Sodium‐Ion Batteries

Abstract:An integrated strategy combing the high‐entropy design with the superlattice‐stabilization is reported to extend the cycle life and enhance the rate capability of layered cathodes. Interestingly, the proposed cathode realized a fast and reversible O3–P3 phase transition at low voltage regions but suppressed phase transition and reversible oxygen redox at high voltage regions. Layered transition metal oxides are appealing cathodes for sodium‐ion batteries due to their overall advantages in energy density and cost. But their stabilities are usually compromised by the complicated phase transition and the oxygen redox, particularly when operating at high voltages, leading to poor structural stability and substantial capacity loss. Here an integrated strategy combing the high‐entropy design with the superlattice‐stabilization to extend the cycle life and enhance the rate capability of layered cathodes is reported. It is shown that the as‐prepared high‐entropy Na2/3Li1/6Fe1/6Co1/6Ni1/6Mn1/3O2 cathode enables a superlattice structure with Li/transition metal ordering and delivers excellent electrochemical performance that is not affected by the presence of phase transition and oxygen redox. It achieves a high reversible capacity (171.2 mAh g−1 at 0.1 C), a high energy density (531 Wh kg−1), extended cycling stability (89.3% capacity retention at 1 C for 90 cycles and 63.7% capacity retention at 5 C after 300 cycles), and excellent fast‐charging capability (78 mAh g−1 at 10 C). This strategy would inspire more rational designs that can be leveraged to improve the reliability of layered cathodes for secondary‐ion batteries.

Abstract:Developing sodium-ion batteries for large-scale energy storage applications is facing big challenges of the lack of high-performance cathode materials. Here, a series of new cathode materials Na0.66CoxMn0.66-xTi0.34O2 for sodium-ion batteries are designed and synthesized aiming to reduce transition metal-ion ordering, charge ordering, as well as Na+ and vacancy ordering. An interesting structure change of Na0.66CoxMn0.66-xTi0.34O2 from orthorhombic to hexagonal is revealed when Co content increases from x = 0 to 0.33. In particular, Na0.66Co0.22Mn0.44Ti0.34O2 with a P2-type layered structure delivers a reversible capacity of 120 mAh g(-1) at 0.1 C. When the current density increases to 10 C, a reversible capacity of 63.2 mAh g(-1) can still be obtained, indicating a promising rate capability. The low valence Co2+ substitution results in the formation of average Mn3.7+ valence state in Na0.66Co0.22Mn0.44Ti0.34O2, effectively suppressing the Mn3+-induced Jahn-Teller distortion, and in turn stabilizing the layered structure. X-ray absorption spectroscopy results suggest that the charge compensation of Na0.66Co0.22Mn0.44Ti0.34O2 during charge/discharge is contributed by Co2.2+/Co3+ and Mn3.3+/Mn4+ redox couples. This is the first time that the highly reversible Co2+/Co3+ redox couple is observed in P2-layered cathodes for sodium-ion batteries. This finding may open new approaches to design advanced intercalation-type cathode materials.

Abstract:Oxygen-redox of layer-structured metal-oxide cathodes has drawn great attention as an effective approach to break through the bottleneck of their capacity limit. However, reversible oxygen-redox can only be obtained in the high-voltage region (usually over 3.5 V) in current metal-oxide cathodes. Here, we realize reversible oxygen-redox in a wide voltage range of 1.5-4.5 V in a P2-layered Na0.7 Mg0.2 [Fe0.2 Mn0.6 □0.2 ]O2 cathode material, where intrinsic vacancies are located in transition-metal (TM) sites and Mg-ions are located in Na sites. Mg-ions in the Na layer serve as "pillars" to stabilize the layered structure during electrochemical cycling, especially in the high-voltage region. Intrinsic vacancies in the TM layer create the local configurations of "□-O-□", "Na-O-□" and "Mg-O-□" to trigger oxygen-redox in the whole voltage range of charge-discharge. Time-resolved techniques demonstrate that the P2 phase is well maintained in a wide potential window range of 1.5-4.5 V even at 10 C. It is revealed that charge compensation from Mn- and O-ions contributes to the whole voltage range of 1.5-4.5 V, while the redox of Fe-ions only contributes to the high-voltage region of 3.0-4.5 V. The orphaned electrons in the nonbonding 2p orbitals of O that point toward TM-vacancy sites are responsible for reversible oxygen-redox, and Mg-ions in Na sites suppress oxygen release effectively.

Abstract:Currently, O3-type layered sodium transition metal oxides (NaxTMO2, TM = transition metal) are the most competitive cathodes for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). However, affected by the scourge of irreversible TM migration when more than 0.5 mol Na+ is deintercalated, the practical capacities of this class of cathodes fall short of their theoretical values and the cyclabilities in the high-voltage range are significantly deteriorated. To mitigate above issues, NaCrO2, one of the typical O3-type layered oxides, has been investigated as a model system and the oxygen vacancy strategy instead of the commonly used chemical substitution is audaciously proposed in this study. The oxygen vacancy-modified NaCrO2-x cathode exhibits an extended reversible discharge capacity of 134.5 mAh g1 corresponding to ∼0.7 mol Na+ de/intercalation and excellent capacity retention after 400 cycles. The mechanistic link between oxygen vacancy and stable high-voltage operation (charged up to 3.8 V) via reversible TM migration is expounded through a combined X-ray diffraction, electron diffraction and electrochemistry study. In addition, the preeminent rate capability benefitted from the oxygen vacancy-expedited ion diffusivity has also been demonstrated. Furthermore, the as-constructed pouch cell model that paired with the Na metal anode exhibits high capacity and cycling endurance as well, guaranteeing the practical applicability. Our finding provides a novel view of structural design in O3-type layered oxide cathodes for SIBs and will provokes more in-depth thoughts on the usage of oxygen vacancy in other sodium cathodes.

Abstract:Anionic redox of charge compensation is an effective strategy to release the excess capacity of the cathode material for sodium ion batteries. Nonetheless, the development of cathode materials with this electrochemical reaction mechanism faces great challenges in terms of voltage attenuation and irreversible loss of capacity. As a result of the complexity of its structure, the failure mechanism is not well understood. Here we conduct STEM coupled with EELS on a typical anionic redox material of sodium ion batteries (Na0.6[Li0.2Mn0.8]O2) after the electrochemical cycle. Surprisingly, it was found that the transition metal ions on the surface of the particles migrated into the alkali metal layer, forming a spinel structure, and resulting in a decrease in the valence of the transition metal on the surface. The possibility of this kind of migration is confirmed, and the most likely migration path is calculated by DFT. Combining the electrochemical curve and XPS spectroscopy, we found the evolution of the charge transfer mechanism, which gradually changes from anion to cation with the progress of the electrochemical cycle. The structural reconstruction of the particle surface and the evolution of the charge transfer mechanism lead to the voltage hysteresis and capacity loss of the cathode. The new failure mechanism provides an important basis for solving the problems of this type of material for sodium cathode.

Abstract:A complementary Mn and O redox mechanism, namely, the gradually activated Mn3+/Mn4+ redox capacities associated with partial oxygen release upon cycling could effectively compensate the capacity loss from O2–/On– redox, is first proposed to explain the admirable cycling stability of Mn‐based layered oxide cathodes for sodium‐ion batteries. Layered oxide cathodes for sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs) have drawn increasing attention owing to their fascinating additional capacity contributed by oxygen‐redox chemistry. Unfortunately, excessive oxygen redox incurs an irreversible oxygen release, deteriorating the cyclic stability and compromising the advantage of additional capacity. Significant efforts have been made so far to stabilize lattice oxygen, but the potential advantages associated with oxygen loss have been ignored. Herein, a complementary Mn and O redox mechanism is first revealed in a novel P2‐Na0.75Ca0.04[Li0.1Ni0.2Mn0.67]O2 cathode. The partial oxygen release activates more Mn3+/Mn4+ redox capacities upon cycling, which effectively compensate the capacity loss from O2‐/On‐ redox and thus enable an ultra‐stable cycling performance (capacity retentions of 102.1% and 95.2% over 100 and 200 cycles at 5 C, respectively). The fast Na+ diffusion kinetics of the cathode also ensure an exceptional rate capability (133.1 and 68.8 mAh g‐1 at 0.1 and 20 C, respectively). The electrode crystal/electronic structure evolution and charge compensation mechanism upon sodiation/desodiation have been elucidated via systematic operando measurements and theoretical computations. The complementary chemistry is a universal principle that stabilizes the Na‐storage behaviors of Mn‐based oxide cathodes, providing new opportunities for anionic redox to boost the energy density and cycling life of SIBs simultaneously.

Abstract:Li‐rich cathode materials are of significant interest for coupling anionic redox with cationic redox chemistry to achieve high‐energy‐density batteries. However, lattice oxygen loss and derived structure distortion would induce serious capacity loss and voltage decay, further hindering its practical application. Herein, a novel Li‐rich cathode material, O3‐type Li0.6[Li0.2Mn0.8]O2, is developed with the pristine state displaying both a Li excess in the transition metal layer and a deficiency in the alkali metal layer. Benefiting from stable structure evolution and Li migration processes, not only can high reversible capacity (≈329 mAh g−1) be harvested but also irreversible/reversible anionic/cationic redox reactions are comprehensively assigned via the combination of in/ex situ spectroscopies. Furthermore, irreversible lattice oxygen loss and structure distortion are effectively restrained, resulting in long‐term cycle stability (capacity drop of 0.045% per cycle, 500 cycles). Altogether, tuning the Li state in the alkali metal layer presents a promising way for modification of high‐capacity Li‐rich cathode candidates.

Abstract:Layered transition metal oxides have drawn much attention as a promising candidate cathode material for sodium‐ion batteries. However, their performance degradation originating from strains and lattice phase transitions remains a critical challenge. Herein, a high‐concentration Zn‐substituted NaxMnO2 cathode with strongly suppressed P2–O2 transition is investigated, which exhibits a volume change as low as 1.0% in the charge/discharge process. Such ultralow strain characteristics ensure a stable host for sodium ion storage, which significantly improves the cycling stability and rate capability of the cathode material. Also, the strong coupling between the highly reversible capacity and the doping content of Zn in NaxMnO2 is investigated. It is suggested that a reversible anionic redox reaction can be effectively triggered by Zn ions and is also highly dependent on the Zn content. Such an ion doping strategy could shed light on the design and construction of stable and high‐capacity sodium ion host.
