Abstract:This paper aims at obtaining a stable and rapid-responsive controller for quadrotor aerial robots with unknown or changeable mass. Based on Newton-Euler formula, integral backstepping method and fractional-order PI/PD control, an adaptive flight control strategy is carried out in Matlab with Lyapunov stability theorem to ensure its stability. The control strategy includes cascade fractional PI/PD control for rotational loop and integral backstepping control for translational loop. Through the comparison with conventional PID flight controller, main criteria for performance as setting time, maximum overshoot and steady-error show its improvement. After validating the proposed control system and controller tuning with several meta-heuristic algorithms, results from non-linear simulation verify the effectiveness and robustness for hovering or near hovering (near quasi-stationary) flight of quadrotors.

Abstract:Quadrotor is a nonlinear, multi-variable, highly coupled and under-actuated system. Based on the self-assemble quadrotor, we propose a novel three dimension path planning algorithm. Using the hierarchy control method, we first map the state space to the augment inputs, and then map the actual inputs to the augmented inputs, so that the path planning problem can be simplified and the algorithm can be more efficient. The path planning algorithm is based on the optimal control theory, taking the obstacle avoidance, energy cost and time into consideration. Due to its use of nonlinear programming techniques, effective initial guesses and fast numerical optimization techniques, this algorithm if efficient enough to be used in real time. We demonstrate the efficiency of this algorithm via numerical simulation results.
Adaptive Extremum Seeking Controller Via Nonlinear Variable Gain for Uncertainty Model Multirotor

Abstract:In this paper, we propose an adaptive extremum search control (AESC) scheme for nonlinear underactuated multirotors in order to solve the cross-platform problem of adjusting the wheelbase and loads of multirotors. In AESC, an adaptive learning controller parameter reconstruction method is used, the adaptive extremum seeking cost function is employed to find optimal control parameters, and nonlinear variable gains (NLVG) are used to replace fixed gain in order to achieve real-time adaptive attitude and position tracking control. Experimental and numerical results with quadcopter were demonstrate the proposed AESC has superior tracking accuracy and robustness compared to the traditional cascaded PID control law. A hierarchical control scheme for multiple aerial vehicle transportation systems with uncertainties and state/input constraints

Abstract:Multiple aerial vehicles have the potential to transport payload in any direction and with any orientation in Special Euclidean Group. In this article, the control problem of the multiple aerial vehicle transportation system with uncertainties and state/input constraints is considered. The multiple aerial vehicles connect with the load via spherical pairs that coincide with the center of mass of the aerial vehicles. A hierarchical control scheme of such challenging complex systems is proposed. The outer loop is designed by a tube-based model predictive control in order to deal with uncertainties, state constraints and input boundedness, while the inner loop is designed by robust control technique which forces the attitude tracking error of the aircraft into robust invariant set. The attitude tracking error of the inner loop induces a difference between the commanded and the actual equivalent wrench acting on the load. Such difference is treated as the equivalent disturbance of the outer loop to guarantee the fulfillment of the state and input constraints. The hierarchical control structure simplifies the design procedure, while still preserves the convergence and feasibility of the overall controlled system under uncertainties, which are proved strictly in the paper. Numerical simulations on a six-quadrotor transportation system are conducted to demonstrate the performance of the proposed control scheme. A real-world prototype including three quadrotors is developed. The hardware-in-the-loop simulation on the prototype supports the real-time feasibility of the proposed scheme.

Nonlinear Model Predictive Control of Tiltrotor Quadrotors with Feasible Control Allocation

Abstract:This paper presents a new flight control framework for tilt-rotor multirotor uncrewed aerial vehicles (MRUAVs). Tiltrotor designs offer full actuation but introduce complexity in control allocation due to actuator redundancy. We propose a new approach where the allocator is tightly coupled with the controller, ensuring that the control signals generated by the controller are feasible within the vehicle actuation space. We leverage nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) to implement the above framework, providing feasible control signals and optimizing performance. This unified control structure simultaneously manages both position and attitude, which eliminates the need for cascaded position and attitude control loops. Extensive numerical experiments demonstrate that our approach significantly outperforms conventional techniques that are based on linear quadratic regulator (LQR) and sliding mode control (SMC), especially in high-acceleration trajectories and disturbance rejection scenarios, making the proposed approach a viable option for enhanced control precision and robustness, particularly in challenging missions.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the design and analysis of the three-dimensional attitude control law of an arbitrary underactuated multirotor aerial vehicle with a fully actuated three-axis attitude motion subject to bounded matched disturbances and uncertainties, both with unknown bounds. To tackle the problem, the rotational kinematics and dynamics of the attitude and angular velocity control errors are first modeled in a geometrically consistent form using the Gibbs vector. Then, we formulate a multi-input adaptive sliding mode control strategy, of the unit-vector type, based on an increasing switching-gain adaptation law. The adaptive switching gain is proved to converge to its maximum bound, even in the presence of sufficiently small chattering, and the existence of an eventual sliding mode is assured. The method is extensively evaluated by simulation considering an X-shaped octa-rotor aerial vehicle. It is also demonstrated experimentally using a three-axis hover that emulates a quadrotor aerial vehicle.

Abstract:Time-optimal control of a multi-rotor remains an open problem due to the under-actuation and nonlinearity of its dynamics, which make it difficult to solve this problem directly. In this paper, the time-optimal control problem of the multi-rotor is studied. Firstly, a thrust limit optimal decomposition method is proposed, which can reasonably decompose the limited thrust into three directions according to the current state and the target state. As a result, the thrust limit constraint is decomposed as a linear constraint. With the linear constraint and decoupled dynamics, a time-optimal guidance trajectory can be obtained. Then, a cost function is defined based on the time-optimal guidance trajectory, which has a quadratic form and can be used to evaluate the time-optimal performance of the system outputs. Finally, based on the cost function, the time-optimal control problem is reformulated as an MPC (Model Predictive Control) problem. The experimental results demonstrate the feasibility and validity of the proposed methods.

Abstract:This paper studies a novel trajectory tracking guidance law for a quadrotor unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) with obstacle avoidance based on nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) scheme. By augmenting a reference position trajectory to a reference dynamical system, the authors formulate the tracking problem as a standard NMPC design problem to generate constrained reference velocity commands for autopilots. However, concerning the closed-loop stability, it is difficult to find a local static state feedback to construct the terminal constraint in the design of NMPC-based guidance law. In order to circumvent this issue, the authors introduce a contraction constraint as a stability constraint, which borrows the ideas from the Lyapunov's direct method and the backstepping technique. To achieve the obstacle avoidance extension, the authors impose a well-designed potential field function-based penalty term on the performance index. Considering the practical application, the heavy computational burden caused by solving the NMPC optimization problem online is alleviated by using the dynamical adjustment of the prediction horizon for the real-time control. Finally, extensive simulations and the real experiment are given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed NMPC scheme.

Unified incremental nonlinear controller for the transition control of a hybrid dual-axis tilting rotor quad-plane

Abstract:Overactuated Tilt Rotor Unmanned Aerial Vehicles are renowned for exceptional wind resistance and a broad operational range, which poses complex control challenges due to non-affine dynamics. Traditional solutions employ multi-state switched logic controllers for transitions. Our study introduces a novel unified incremental nonlinear controller for overactuated dual-axis tilting rotor quad-planes, seamlessly managing pitch, roll, and physical actuator commands. The control allocation problem is addressed using a SQP iterative optimization algorithm, well-suited for nonlinear actuator effectiveness in thrust vectoring vehicles. The controller design integrates desired roll and pitch angle inputs. These desired attitude angles are autonomously managed by the controller and then conveyed to the vehicle during slow airspeed phases, when the vehicle maintains its 6 DOF. We incorporate an AoA protection logic to prevent wing stall and a yaw rate reference model for coordinated turns. Flight tests confirm the controller's effectiveness in transitioning from hovering to forward flight, achieving desired vertical and lateral accelerations, and reverting to hovering.

Abstract:This paper proposes a nonlinear control strategy to solve the trajectory tracking problem of a tilt-rotor Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) when transporting a suspended load. For the present study, the aim of the control system is to track a desired trajectory of the aircraft with load’s swing-free, even in the presence of external disturbances, parametric uncertainties, unmodeled dynamics, and noisy position measurements with lower sampling frequency than the controller. The whole system modeling is obtained through the Euler-Lagrange formulation considering the dynamics of the tilt-rotor UAV coupled to the suspended load. As for the nonlinear control strategy, an inner-loop control is designed based on input-output feedback linearization combined with the dynamic extension approach to stabilize the attitude and altitude of the UAV assuming nonlinearities, while an outer-loop control law is designed for guiding the aircraft with reduced load swing. The linearized dynamics are controlled using linear mixed H 2 / H ∞ controllers with pole placement constraints. The solution is compared to two simpler control systems: the first one considers the load as a disturbance to the system but does not avoid its swing; the second one is a previous academic result with a three-level cascade strategy. Finally, in order to deal with the problem of position estimation in presence of unknown disturbances and noisy measurements with low sampling frequency, a Linear Kalman Filter with Unknown Inputs is designed for estimating both the aircraft’s translational position and translational disturbances. Simulation results are carried out to corroborate the proposed control strategy.

On executing aggressive quadrotor attitude tracking maneuvers under actuator constraints

Abstract:The quadrotor task of negotiating aggressive attitude maneuvers while adhering to motor constraints is addressed here. The majority of high level quadrotor Nonlinear Control System (NCS) solutions ignore motor control authority limitations, especially important during aggressive attitude maneuvers, generating unrealizable thrusts and negating the validity of the accompanying stability proofs. Here, an attitude control framework is developed, comprised by a thrust allocation strategy and a specially designed geometric attitude tracking controller, allowing the quadrotor to achieve aggressive attitude maneuvers, while complying to actuator constraints and simultaneously staying "close" to a desired position command in a computationally inexpensive way. This is a novel contribution resulting in thrusts realizable by available quadrotors during aggressive attitude maneuvers, and enhanced performance guaranteed by valid stability proofs. Also, it is shown that the developed controller can be combined with a collective thrust expression in producing a position/yaw tracking controller. Through rigorous stability proofs, both the position and attitude frameworks are shown to have desirable closed loop properties that are almost global. This establishes a quadrotor control solution allowing the vehicle to negotiate aggressive maneuvers position/attitude on SE(3). Simulations illustrate and validate the effectiveness and capabilities of the developed solution.

Abstract:Guidance path-planning and following are two core technologies used for controlling un-manned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in both military and civilian applications. However, only a few approaches treat both the technologies simultaneously. In this study, an innovative hybrid gradient vector fields for path-following guidance (HGVFs-PFG) algorithm is proposed to control fixed-wing UAVs to follow a generated guidance path and oriented target curves in three-dimensional space, which can be any combination of straight lines, arcs, and helixes as motion primitives. The algorithm aids the creation of vector fields (VFs) for these motion primitives as well as the design of an effective switching strategy to ensure that only one VF is activated at any time to ensure that the complex paths are followed completely. The strategies designed in earlier studies have flaws that prevent the UAV from following arcs that make its turning angle too large. The proposed switching strategy solves this problem by introducing the concept of the virtual way-points. Finally, the performance of the HGVFs-PFG algorithm is verified using a reduced-order autopilot and four representative simulation scenarios. The simulation considers the constraints of the aircraft, and its results indicate that the algorithm performs well in following both lateral and longitudinal control, particularly for curved paths. In general, the proposed technical method is practical and competitive.

Abstract:<p>This paper investigates the trajectory tracking problem of a quadrotor with six degrees of freedom (6-DOF) in the case of time-varying and asymmetric output constraints. To satisfy the output constraints, an Asymmetric Barrier Lyapunov Function (ABLF) is constructed and the control loop of the quadrotor is divided into position and attitude loop respectively. In the position loop, the adaptive controller is applied to estimate the upper bound of external interference online, and Dynamic Surface Control (DSC) technology is devoted to solve the 'explosion of complexity' problem of the traditional backstepping design process. Moreover, event-triggered control is implemented to the attitude loop controller design to reduce signal transmitting and communication burden in which the knowledge of the upper bounds of event-triggered thresholds is not required to be known in advance. Finally, the simulation results illustrate the effectiveness of the control method of this technology.</p>

Abstract:Applications involving Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have increasingly required faster and more accurate movements to reduce flight time and to improve efficiency in the obstacle avoidance capability. In this context, this work proposes a nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) strategy formulated on the Special Euclidean group SE(3) for quadrotor trajectory tracking within cluttered environments with unknown obstacles. The approach considers constraints in the states and inputs, with constant disturbance rejection and capable of executing aggressive maneuvers. The UAV attitude is considered as an optimization variable within the control problem thanks to an algebraic ellipsoidal set approach. As a consequence, the collision check takes the UAV attitude into account, allowing aggressive maneuvers. Numerical experiments under realistic conditions allow evaluating the performance of the proposed approach for the UAV. The tested maneuvers are throwing a narrow gap, passing by a nonconvex obstacle gap, avoiding a convex obstacle, and doing slalom movements. In all cases, uncertainties are considered. The achieved results indicate the advantages of executing aggressive maneuvers.

Abstract:This paper presents a control scheme for aerial manipulators which allows to solve different motion problems: end-effector position control, end-effector trajectory tracking control and path-following control. The scheme has two cascaded controllers: i ) the first controller is a minimum norm controller based on numerical methods, it solves the three motion control problems just by modifying the controller references. Also, since the aerial manipulator robot is a redundant system, i.e. , it has extra degrees of freedom to accomplish the task, it is possible to set other control objectives in a hierarchical order. As a secondary objective of the control it is proposed to maintain a desired configuration for the robotic arm during the task. ii ) The second cascade controller is designed to compensate the dynamics of the system which main objective is to drive the velocity errors to zero. The coupled dynamic model of the robotic system (hexarotor and robotic arm) is presented. This model is usually developed as a function of the forces and torques. However, in this work, it is written as a function of reference velocities which are usual references for these vehicles. The proposed control algorithms are given with the corresponding stability and robustness analysis. Finally, to validate the control scheme, experimental tests are performed in a partially structured environment with an aerial manipulator conformed by an aerial platform and a 3DOF robotic arm.

A Computationally Efficient Learning-Based Model Predictive Control for Multirotors under Aerodynamic Disturbances

Abstract:Neglecting complex aerodynamic effects hinders high-speed yet high-precision multirotor autonomy. In this paper, we present a computationally efficient learning-based model predictive controller that simultaneously optimizes a trajectory that can be tracked within the physical limits (on thrust and orientation) of the multirotor system despite unknown aerodynamic forces and adapts the control input. To do this, we leverage the well-known differential flatness property of multirotors, which allows us to transform their nonlinear dynamics into a linear model. The main limitation of current flatness-based planning and control approaches is that they often neglect dynamic feasibility. This is because these constraints are nonlinear as a result of the mapping between the input, i.e., multirotor thrust, and the flat state. In our approach, we learn a novel representation of the drag forces by learning the mapping from the flat state to the multirotor thrust vector (in a world frame) as a Gaussian Process (GP). Our proposed approach leverages the properties of GPs to develop a convex optimal controller that can be iteratively solved as a second-order cone program (SOCP). In simulation experiments, our proposed approach outperforms related model predictive controllers that do not account for aerodynamic effects on trajectory feasibility, leading to a reduction of up to 55% in absolute tracking error.

Abstract:This paper proposes a new hierarchical robust control scheme for the multiple quadrotor unnamed aerial vehicles (UAVs) aerial transportation system with a suspended payload. The control system is decoupled into two parts: (1) the payload-loop subsystem for the payload’s position and attitude control together with the cable’s swing control, (2) the quadrotor-loop subsystem for the i-th quadrotor UAV’s attitude control. The robust integral of the signum of the error (RISE) method and geometry control method are combined together for the control design of the payload-loop subsystem, which is used to address the problem that the position and attitude control of payload is limited and the mass of the payload is not uniformly distributed in the actual flight. The proposed control strategy does not require the high-order time-derivatives of the desired system state, and it is more practical and can achieve fast tracking for the desired trajectory of the payload. Taking the coupling dynamics between the payload and multiple UAVs into consideration, the modeling uncertainty of the suspended payload and the unknown external perturbations are compensated. In addition, a quadrotor-loop controller is designed for the UAV’s attitude with the combination of the geometry control method and the sliding model control method, and the unknown aerodynamic effects are also compensated. Finally, the stability of the closed-loop system is provided via Lyapunov-based stability analysis, and a numerical simulation is performed. Simulation results show that the proposed hierarchical robust control scheme can compensate the effects of the uncertainties and the unknown external disturbances. And the proposed system can reach the specified position rapidly; meanwhile, the attitude of the payload can converge quickly. The overall assessment in comparison with the recent similar method indicates the success of the proposed method on the obstacle avoidance scenario.

Adaptive Controllers for Quadrotors Carrying Unknown Payloads

Abstract:With the advent of intelligent transport, quadrotors are becoming an attractive solution while lifting or dropping payloads during emergency evacuations, construction works, etc. During such operations, dynamic variations in (possibly unknown) payload cause considerable changes in the system dynamics. However, a systematic control solution to tackle such varying dynamical behaviour is still missing. In this work, two control solutions are proposed to solve two specific problems in aerial transportation of payload, as mentioned below. In the first work, we explore the tracking control problem for a six degrees-of-freedom quadrotor carrying different unknown payloads. Due to the state-dependent nature of the uncertainties caused by variation in the dynamics, the state-of-the-art adaptive control solutions would be ineffective against these uncertainties that can be completely unknown and possibly unbounded a priori. In addition, external disturbances such as wind while following a trajectory in all three positions and attitude angles. Hence, an adaptive control solution for quadrotors is proposed, which does not require any a priori knowledge of the parameters of quadrotor dynamics and external disturbances. The second work is focused on the interchanging dynamic behaviour of a quadrotor while loading and unloading different payloads during vertical operations. The control problem to maintain the desired altitude is formulated via a switched dynamical framework to capture the interchanging dynamics of the quadrotor during such vertical operations, and a robust adaptive control solution is proposed to tackle such dynamics when it is unknown. The stability of the closed-loop system is studied analytically and the effectiveness of the proposed solution is verified via simulations.

Path-following Control for Fixed-Wing Unmanned Aerial Vehicles Based on a Virtual Target

Abstract:The main contribution of this article is the proposal of a path-following method for fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicles. This path-following method employs the multi-loop framework that consists of an outer guidance loop and an inner control loop. The guidance loop relies on the idea of tracking a virtual target. The virtual target is assumed to travel along the defined path and its speed is explicitly specified. This guidance law guarantees the asymptotic convergence to the desired path and can anticipate the transition of the flight path in advance, which reduces the command for the inner control loop. In the inner control loop, the flight control law based on dynamic surface control is derived to overcome the ‘explosion of complexity’ problem in the backstepping design. The numerical simulation result illustrates the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:The goal of this paper is to develop a continuous optimization-based refinement of the reference trajectory to 'push it out' of the obstacle-occupied space in the global phase for Multi-rotor Aerial Vehicles in unknown environments. Our proposed approach comprises two planners: a global planner and a local planner. The global planner refines the initial reference trajectory when the trajectory goes either through an obstacle or near an obstacle and lets the local planner calculate a near-optimal control policy. The global planner comprises two convex programming approaches: the first one helps to refine the reference trajectory, and the second one helps to recover the reference trajectory if the first approach fails to refine. The global planner mainly focuses on real-time performance and obstacles avoidance, whereas the proposed formulation of the constrained nonlinear model predictive control-based local planner ensures safety, dynamic feasibility, and the reference trajectory tracking accuracy for low-speed maneuvers, provided that local and global planners have mean computation times 0.06s (15Hz) and 0.05s (20Hz), respectively, on an NVIDIA Jetson Xavier NX computer. The results of our experiment confirmed that, in cluttered environments, the proposed approach outperformed three other approaches: sampling-based pathfinding followed by trajectory generation, a local planner, and graph-based pathfinding followed by trajectory generation.
