Abstract:Pullorum disease, caused by the Salmonella enterica serovar Gallinarum biovar Pullorum, is a highly contagious disease in the poultry industry, leading to significant economic losses in many developing countries. Due to the emergence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) strains, immediate attention is required to prevent their endemics and global spreading. To mitigate the prevalence of MDR Salmonella Pullorum infections in poultry farms, it is urgent to develop effective vaccines. Reverse vaccinology (RV) is a promising approach using expressed genomic sequences to find new vaccine targets. The present study used the RV approach to identify new antigen candidates against Pullorum disease. Initial epidemiological investigation and virulent assays were conducted to select strain R51 for presentative and general importance. An additional complete genome sequence (4.7 Mb) for R51 was resolved using the Pacbio RS II platform. The proteome of Salmonella Pullorum was analyzed to predict outer membrane and extracellular proteins, and was further selected for evaluating transmembrane domains, protein prevalence, antigenicity, and solubility. Twenty-two high-scored proteins were identified among 4713 proteins, with 18 recombinant proteins successfully expressed and purified. The chick embryo model was used to assess protection efficacy, in which vaccine candidates were injected into 18-day-old chick embryos for in vivo immunogenicity and protective effects. The results showed that the PstS, SinH, LpfB, and SthB vaccine candidates were able to elicit a significant immune response. Particularly, PstS confers a significant protective effect, with a 75% survival rate compared to 31.25% for the PBS control group, confirming that identified antigens can be promising targets against Salmonella Pullorum infection. Thus, we offer RV to discover novel effective antigens in an important veterinary infectious agent with high priority.
A Salmonella Pullorum outbreak with neurological signs in adult layers and outbreak investigation using whole genome sequencing

Abstract:This report describes a Salmonella enterica subspecies enterica Serovar Gallinarum Biovar Pullorum (SP) outbreak in a Dutch laying flock of 65 weeks of age (W) showing increased mortality, decreased egg production, and neurological signs. The flock was vaccinated three times with a live S. enteritis and S. typhimurium vaccine in the rearing period. At 71 W, as mortality peaked, a live SG 9R vaccine was applied. At 76 W, mortality decreased and egg production stabilized but did not return to a normal level. Post-mortem , histological, bacteriological, and serological examinations were frequently performed. Gross findings in diseased and dead birds were characterized by hepatomegaly, splenomegaly, and oophoritis. SP was frequently isolated from the liver, spleen, ovary, and bone marrow, and the isolation rate did not vary significantly between the different organs. In birds with neurological signs, histological examination and immunostaining showed cerebral granulomas in the presence of Salmonella . Previous Salmonella vaccinations did not hamper the detection of specific SP antibodies (positive at serum dilution ≥ 1:8) using a commercial rapid plate agglutination test. At 85 W, 40 clinically healthy birds were investigated and three had ovarian lesions, explaining egg production not returning to normal. These birds had antibodies against SP, indicating contact with the bacterium, but carrier status could not be confirmed by culture. Phylogenetic analysis showed SP isolates within this outbreak to be clonal and differing from SP isolates from previous outbreaks.

Abstract:Avian salmonellosis has huge economic and public health impact. In this manuscript, a case of S. Enteritidis and its management within Jos Metropolis was reported. Fiftythree carcasses of 2-weeks old pullets were presented at the poultry and fish clinic of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, University of Jos, Nigeria for investigation. There was persistent mortality despite 5 days medication with 20% Enrofloxacin (Floxinor®, Shijiazhuang Guanghua Pharmaceutical co. Ltd, Hebei, China). Cumulative mortality within 14 days was 203 birds in a flock of 4,000. Necropsy was done and harvested were subjected to microbial analysis for bacterial isolation, identification and antibiotic susceptibility test while portions of these organs were preserved in 10% formalin for histopathology. Necropsy findings were empty crops, hepatitis with petechial hemorrhages, nephritis, congested and consolidated lungs, peritonitis, congested spleens and mild enteritis. Histologically, there were vacuolation and necrosis of renal tubular epithelia cells and interstitial infiltration with heterophils. Severe disorganization of hepatic cords, infiltration with inflammatory cells and mild necrosis of hepatocytes were observed, while there was severe congestion and diffuse hemorrhages in the lungs. Cellular infiltration within the lamina propria of small intestine with stunting and blunting of the villi were observed. Organism isolated on MacConkey agar was identified as Salmonella Enteritidis. Antibiotic susceptibility test showed the organism to be most susceptible to Streptomycin, which was administered via drinking water at dosage of 40mg/kg with good recovery of the flock. It was concluded that the occurrence of Salmonella Enteritidis infection in this flock might be from the hatchery or via ingestion of contaminated feed and water. Abstract:It is now clearly established that the brain has the capability of synthesizing various biologically active steroids including 17‐hydroxypregnenolone (17OH‐Δ5P), 17‐hydroxyprogesterone (17OH‐P), dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and androstenedione (Δ4). However, the presence, distribution and activity of cytochrome P450 17α‐hydroxylase/C17, 20‐lyase (P450C17), a key enzyme required for the conversion of pregnenolone (Δ5P) and progesterone (P) into these steroids, are poorly documented. Here, we show that P450C17‐like immunoreactivity is widely distributed in the frog brain and pituitary. Prominent populations of P450C17‐containing cells were observed in a number nuclei of the telencephalon, diencephalon, mesencephalon and metencephalon, as well as in the pars distalis and pars intermedia of the pituitary. In the brain, P450C17‐like immunoreactivity was almost exclusively located in neurons. In several hypothalamic nuclei, P450C17‐positive cell bodies also contained 3β‐hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase‐like immunoreactivity. Incubation of telencephalon, diencephalon, mesencephalon, metencephalon or pituitary explants with [3H]Δ5P resulted in the formation of several tritiated steroids including 17OH‐Δ5P, 17OH‐P, DHEA and Δ4. De novo synthesis of C21 17‐hydroxysteroids and C19 ketosteroids was reduced in a concentration‐dependent manner by ketoconazole, a P450C17 inhibitor. This is the first detailed immunohistochemical mapping of P450C17 in the brain and pituitary of any vertebrate. Altogether, the present data provide evidence that CNS neurons and pituitary cells can synthesize androgens.

Abstract:Contamination of eggs by Salmonella has often been identified as a source of food-borne human illness. S. Enteritidis is deposited inside developing eggs when invasive infections of laying hens reach the reproductive organs. The susceptibility of hens in cage-based housing systems to S. Enteritidis has been associated with their stocking density, but the applicability of this information to extensive (cage-free) systems is uncertain. The present study assessed internal organ colonization by S. Enteritidis in egg-type pullets reared at 2 different stocking densities in cage-free housing. Pullets were reared at either 374 cm2 or 929 cm2 of floor space per bird. At 16 wk of age, 4 groups of 72 pullets were moved into isolation rooms simulating commercial cage-free barns; 1/3 of the pullets in 2 rooms were orally inoculated with S. Enteritidis immediately after transfer and pullets in 2 rooms were similarly infected at 19 wk. At 6 and 12 d postinoculation, the pullets were euthanized and samples of liver, spleen, and intestinal tract were removed for bacteriologic culturing. No significant differences (P > 0.05) in S. Enteritidis isolation frequencies from any tissue were observed between high and low density rearing groups following infection at either age. However, S. Enteritidis was found significantly (P < 0.05) more frequently among pullets infected orally at 19 wk than at 16 wk in spleens and intestines. Likewise, the frequency of S. Enteritidis isolation from all birds (inoculated plus contact-exposed) at 19 wk was significantly higher than at 16 wk in livers and spleens. This increased susceptibility to invasive S. Enteritidis infection at reproductive maturity emphasizes the importance of risk reduction at a critical stage in the egg production cycle.

Abstract:Pullorum disease, an intestinal disease in chickens caused by Salmonella enterica serovar pullorum (S. Pullorum), is a significant threat to the poultry industry and results in substantial economic losses. The bacteria's transmission, both vertical and horizontal, makes it difficult to completely eliminate it. Control strategies for pullorum disease primarily involve stringent eradication programs that cull infected birds and employ antibiotics for treatment. However, eradication programs are costly, and antibiotic use is restricted. Therefore, developing alternative control strategies is essential. Increasingly, studies are focusing on modulating the gut microbiota to control intestinal diseases. Modulating the chicken gut microbiota may offer a novel strategy for preventing and controlling pullorum disease in poultry. However, the impact of S. Pullorum on the chicken gut microbiota has not been well established, prompting our exploration of the relationship between S. Pullorum and the chicken gut microbiota in this study. In this study, we initially analyzed the dynamic distribution of the gut microbiota in chickens infected with S. Pullorum. Alpha diversity analysis revealed a decrease in observed OTUs and the Shannon diversity index in the infected group, suggesting a reduction in the richness of the chicken gut microbiota due to S. Pullorum infection. Principal coordinate analysis (PCoA) showed distinct clusters between the gut microbiota of infected and uninfected groups, indicating S. Pullorum infection changed the chicken gut microbiota structure. Specifically, S. Pullorum infection enriched the relative abundance of the genera Escherichia-Shigella (65% in infected vs. 40.6% in uninfected groups) and Enterococcus (10.8% vs. 3.7%) while reducing the abundance of Lactobacillus (9.9% vs. 32%) in the chicken microbiota. Additionally, based on the observed changes in the chicken gut microbiota, we isolated microorganisms, including Bifidobacterium pseudolongum, Streptococcus equi and Lacticaseibacillus paracasei (L. paracasei), which were decreased by S. Pullorum infection. Notably, the L. paracasei Lp02 strain was found to effectively inhibit S. Pullorum proliferation in vitro and alleviate its infection in vivo. We found that S. Pullorum infection reduced the richness of the chicken gut microbiota and enriched the relative abundance of the genera Escherichia-Shigella and Enterococcus while decreasing the abundance of the anaerobic genus Lactobacillus. Furthermore, microbiota analysis enabled the isolation of several antimicrobial microorganisms from healthy chicken feces, with a L. paracasei strain notably inhibiting S. Pullorum proliferation in vitro and alleviating its infection in vivo. Overall, this research enhances our understanding of the interaction between gut microbiota and pathogen infection, as well as offers new perspectives and strategies for modulating the chicken gut microbiota to control pullorum disease.
Four cases of spuriously low WBC count due to in vitro leukocyte agglutination: contribution of the hematology analyzer Coulter STKS in detecting this clinically misleading artefact.

Abstract:Four spuriously lowered WBC counts due to in vitro leukoagglutination were reported from an automated cell counter (Coulter STKS). Leukocyte aggregates (3 to 50 cells), detected in the peripheral blood smears, included different cell types, normal (neutrophils, eosinophils, monocytes, lymphocytes) or abnormal (lymphoma cells). The phenomenon was associated with either a spurious leukoneutropenia or an underestimation of hyperleucocytosis. Leukoagglutination was extensively investigated in 3 cases : as shown in several reports, leukoagglutination may occur with various features, especially due to temperature and anticoagulant dependence. Our four cases reflected this variability. Furthermore, one case was found both temperature-dependent and anticoagulant-independent, a pattern not yet described in the literature. A common STKS graphic pattern was found in our 4 cases, suggesting that hematology analyzers such as Coulter STKS may be useful to detect leukoagglutination. In conclusion, each leukoneutropenia and/or each suggestive graphic pattern must be controlled by means of a blood smear examination in order to rule out the possibility of in vitro leukoagglutination.
Phenotypic and molecular characterisation of Salmonella spp. isolates in healthy poultry

Abstract:1. Epidemiological surveillance of Salmonella spp. serves as a primary tool for maintaining the health of poultry flocks. Characterising circulating serotypes is crucial for implementing control and prevention measures. This study conducted phenotypic and molecular characterisation of S. enterica Pullorum, S. enterica Heidelberg, and S. enterica Corvalis isolated from broiler chickens during slaughtering.2. All strains were susceptible to gentamicin, neomycin and norfloxacin. However, resistance rates exceeded 50% for ciprofloxacin and tiamulin, irrespective of the serotype. Approximately 64% of strains were classified as multidrug-resistant, with S. enterica Heidelberg strains exhibiting significantly higher overall resistance. The isolates demonstrated the ability to adhere and produce biofilm at a minimum of three temperatures, with S. enterica Pullorum capable of biofilm production at all temperatures encountered during poultry rearing.3. Each strain possessed between two and seven different virulence-associated genes. Genetic similarity, as indicated by pulsed field gel electrophoresis, exceeded 90% for all three serotypes and strains were classified in the R5 ribotype by PCR, regardless of serotype. Sequencing revealed high similarity among all strains, with homology ranging from 99.61 to 100% and all were classified to a single cluster.4. The results suggested a clonal relationship among the strains, indicating the possible circulation of a unique clonal group of S. enterica Pullorum in the southern region of Brazil.
Egg Drop Syndrome 76 in a U.S. Broiler Breeder Flock

Abstract:A four-house broiler breeder farm of approximately 35-wk-old hens was diagnosed with egg drop syndrome (EDS'76) utilizing PCR and hemagglutination inhibition (HI) testing. Based on communication with local practitioners, the geographic area near where this flock was located had numerous EDS'76 cases in table egg layers at the time of diagnosis. An egg production drop was seen in the broiler breeder flock over a 7-day period, which prompted an investigation. During this investigation, a significant number of shell-less, wrinkled, and pale eggs were noted, but no increases in mortality or respiratory signs were observed. The disease and subsequent production drops spread horizontally across the farm over a 5-wk period. Production returned to approximately the breed standard egg production 4 wk after initial egg production drop. However, hatching egg utilization continued to be reduced for another 2 wk because of the number of thin-shelled eggs. A similar pattern of drop in egg production and subsequent return was observed in the other houses. No significant lesions were noted in the tissues submitted for histopathology. Differential diagnoses that could cause shell abnormalities and egg production drops were ruled out by submitting appropriate samples for diagnostic investigation. Egg drop syndrome 76 PCR was performed on shell-less eggs and EDS'76 was detected by PCR at two separate laboratories. Subsequently, serum was submitted for HI and positive results were found in each house as they showed egg production drop concurrent with shell abnormalities. At the time the flocks returned to breed standard production, EDS'76 titers were consistent with a uniformly exposed and seroconverted flock. The authors suspect that immunosuppression as pullets played a role in this flock being impacted by EDS. No other farms in the company's system were observed with production drops or shell abnormalities similar to this case.
Up-regulation of the MyD88-dependent Pathway of TLR Signaling in Spleen and Caecum of Young Chickens Infected with Salmonella Serovar Pullorum

Abstract:TLR signaling plays a role in Salmonella infection, but less information is available in chickens infected with Salmonella serovar Pullorum. The present study with young chickens, experimentally infected with S. Pullorum, has used real-time quantitative RT-PCR to investigate the relative expression of genes of the TLR4 signaling pathway (TLR4, MyD88, TRAF6 and NF-kappaB) in the spleen and caecum at 1, 3, 7 and 14 days post-infection (dpi). Three-day-old specific-pathogen-free chickens were orally infected with S. Pullorum or saline (controls). In addition to gene expression, the bacterial burden of spleen and caecum was assessed and serum concentrations and total IgG were measured. Significantly more bacteria were found in the caecum than in the spleen. Concentrations of IgG were significantly higher in infected birds at 1 dpi, reached a peak at 3 dpi (P<0.01), and then gradually decreased with the time. Infected young chickens had significant up-regulation of the expression of TLR4, MyD88, TRAF6 and NF-kappaB in the spleen at 3 dpi compared to controls (P<0.05). In the caecum, only increased expression of NF-kappaB mRNA (P<0.05) was observed at 1 dpi. The pattern of immune response to infection with S. Pullorum differed between spleen and caecum and did not directly correspond with pathogen burden. The observed changes indicate that the MyD88-dependent pathway of TLR4 signaling plays a role in young chickens infected with S. Pullorum.
Virulence Range and New Pathological Pictures of Salmonella enteridits and Salmonella typhimurium Isolated from Ducklings in Experimental Infected Chicks

Abstract:Salmonellosis is a major global pathogen in the poultry industry and is a significant public health concern. Ducks are known to be carriers of Salmonella. Therefore, monitoring salmonellosis is the most important strategy for preventing the disease. An experimental design was planned to study the pathogenicity of two Salmonella strains. One hundred and fifty chicks were divided into three groups; group one was inoculated with the Salmonella enteritidis strain, group two was inoculated with the Salmonella typhimurium strain, and group three was UN inoculated. Symptoms, postmortem lesions and mortality rate were recorded. The chick growth performance parameters were also determined. Using ANOVA for statistical analysis, there was a significant difference in body weight, body gain, feed consumption, and feed conversion ratio between the two infected groups and the blank group (uninoculated group). In this study, the prevalence of Salmonella enteritidis was (1.73%) and Salmonella typhimurium (0.43%) in imported ducklings in Egypt. Both Salmonella strains were subjected to an antimicrobial sensitivity test. It showed that Salmonella enteritidis had a 60% antimicrobial resistance profile and Salmonella typhimurium had a 20% antimicrobial resistance profile. Furthermore, genotypic characterization was performed and the seven virulence genes(stn, avrA, sopB, ompF, invA, Mgtc, Ssaq) were found. New pathological lesions of Salmonella infection were discovered, such as skull hemorrhage at 3 days and 6 days of age, and a liver similar to a button shape in necropsied infected chicks with Salmonella typhimurium at 21 days of age. Furthermore, hemorrhagic spots were observed on the duodenum. In the presence of Salmonella, Clostridium perferingens was discovered in a bacteriological investigation of duodenal lesions samples from infected chicks. At 30 days of age, administration of acetic acid (1%) as an alternative tool for controlling Salmonella. In conclusion, salmonellosis is a risk factor for necrotic enteritis, and using acetic acid to eliminate salmonella infection is insufficient.

Abstract:Background: Salmonella spp are a major cause of food-borne outbreaks in Europe. We investigated a large multi-country outbreak of Salmonella enterica serotype Enteritidis in the EU and European Economic Area (EEA). Methods: A confirmed case was defined as a laboratory-confirmed infection with the outbreak strains of S Enteritidis based on whole-genome sequencing (WGS), occurring between May 1, 2015, and Oct 31, 2018. A probable case was defined as laboratory-confirmed infection with S Enteritidis with the multiple-locus variable-number tandem repeat analysis outbreak profile. Multi-country epidemiological, trace-back, trace-forward, and environmental investigations were done. We did a case-control study including confirmed and probable cases and controls randomly sampled from the population registry (frequency matched by age, sex, and postal code). Odds ratios (ORs) for exposure rates between cases and controls were calculated with unmatched univariable and multivariable logistic regression. Findings: 18 EU and EEA countries reported 838 confirmed and 371 probable cases. 509 (42%) cases were reported in 2016, after which the number of cases steadily increased. The case-control study results showed that cases more often ate in food establishments than did controls (OR 3·4 [95% CI 1·6-7·3]), but no specific food item was identified. Recipe-based food trace-back investigations among cases who ate in food establishments identified eggs from Poland as the vehicle of infection in October, 2016. Phylogenetic analysis identified two strains of S Enteritidis in human cases that were subsequently identified in salmonella-positive eggs and primary production premises in Poland, confirming the source of the outbreak. After control measures were implemented, the number of cases decreased, but increased again in March, 2017, and the increase continued into 2018. Interpretation: This outbreak highlights the public health value of multi-country sharing of epidemiological, trace-back, and microbiological data. The re-emergence of cases suggests that outbreak strains have continued to enter the food chain, although changes in strain population dynamics and fewer cases indicate that control measures had some effect. Routine use of WGS in salmonella surveillance and outbreak response promises to identify and stop outbreaks in the future. Abstract:Pullorum disease is a serious problem in many countries. Caused by Salmonella enterica serovar Gallinarum biovar Pullorum ( S . Pullorum), it creates huge economic losses in the poultry industry. Although pullorum disease has been well-controlled in many developed countries, it is still a critical problem in developing countries. However, there is still a lack of information on S . Pullorum strains isolated from different regions and sources in China. The objective of this study was to supply the antimicrobial resistance patterns and clonal relationships of S . Pullorum from breeder chicken farms.

Abstract:Systemic Mycoplasma synoviae infection in 47-day-old broiler chickens with septicaemic lesions and increased carcass condemnation rate is reported. The clinical history included respiratory signs and an enlarged keel bursa. Condemnations at the processing plant were due to airsacculitis and keel bursitis. Involvement of several organs, including the keel bursa, liver, spleen, brain, choroid of the eye, nerves and skeletal muscle associated with vasculitis, and the isolation of M. synoviae from the liver and keel bursa are only occasionally seen in field cases. Random amplified polymorphic DNA analysis of the M. synoviae isolated from the broiler chickens in this study had a different pattern when compared with the reference M. synoviae strains, WVU-1853, MS-H and F10-2AS, and another M. synoviae isolated from broiler breeders from the same company, but had a similar DNA pattern to an M. synoviae isolated from broiler chickens and turkeys owned by the same company. This finding suggests a horizontally acquired infection rather than vertical transmission.

Abstract:Pullorum disease, caused by Salmonella enterica serovar Pullorum (S. Pullorum) infection, is a major pathogenic threat to the poultry industry. In this study, 40 S. Pullorum isolates from seven provinces of China were comprehensively analyzed in terms of antigenic type and antimicrobial susceptibility, and their drug-resistance genes and virulence genes were identified with whole-genome sequencing (WGS). We show that all these isolates were standard antigenic types, with ST92 the predominant genotype (92.5%). Disk diffusion assays revealed high resistance rates to streptomycin (92.5%), ciprofloxacin (82.5%), and ampicillin (80%), and the resistance rates to streptomycin, gentamicin, ampicillin, and cefotaxime were higher in isolates from sick chickens than in those from healthy chickens. In addition, gyrA mutations and eight acquired resistance genes were identified, with aac(6')-Iaa the most prevalent, followed by blaTEM1β, sul2, and the GyrA S83F mutation. The resistance phenotypes to streptomycin, ampicillin, and ciprofloxacin correlated strongly with the presence of the aac(6')-Iaa resistance gene, blaTEM1β resistance gene, and gyrA mutations, respectively. Analysis of the virulence genes showed that the isolates expressed numerous factors associated with secretion systems, including SPI-1 and SPI-2. Overall, this study extends our understanding of the epidemiology and antibiotic resistance of S. Pullorum in China.

Abstract:High definition television (HDTV) video delivery services over IP networks have recently started. To make the delivered high-quality HDTV video comfortable to view, we need to design appropriate delivery systems and then monitor the quality of experience. Currently, subjective assessment is the main method used to quantify video quality. However, it is unsuitable for real time monitoring of video quality. Therefore, we need an objective video quality assessment method that can effectively estimate subjective video quality from the video characteristics. We propose a full-reference-type objective video quality measurement method that is applicable to the evaluation of coding distortions in HDTV. We analyzed the results from applying the conventional method (J.247 Annex A) to HDTV video and improved the conventional method on the basis of those results. We applied fuzzy measure to the conventional method so as to consider the interaction effects of each parameter because the conventional method tends to obtain different characteristics between high quality and low quality regions of video content.
An Austrian outbreak of Salmonella enteritidis phage type 36 in 2004

Abstract:In June 2004, an egg packing station was epidemiologically incriminated as possibly distributing the vehicle of the Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica ser. Typhimurium definitive type (DT) U291 outbreak which began in September 2003 and--as of June 2004 affected more than 100 persons all over Austria and 8 German tourists. A total of 68 egg producing farms were screened for salmonella. Whereas all samples tested negative for S. Typhimurium DT U291, one batch of laying hens was identified as being heavily contaminated with a rare Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica ser. Enteritidis phage type, namely PT 36. This phage type was cultured from 6 of 7 swabs from pooled fecal samples (drag swabs), from 1 of 4 samples of pooled yolks, and from 7 of 11 hens tested (ovaries, liver and intestinal content pooled per hen). In 2004, a total of 36 culture-confirmed human PT 36 infections (19 manifest cases, 12 asymptomatic carriers, and 5 excreters with unknown clinical status) were documented in 4 of the 9 Austrian provinces. It was possible to demonstrate that eggs from this single farm were the probable source of infection for 30 of 31 culture-confirmed human infections. Only in the case of one patient, who regularly purchased eggs at the local market, could no connection to the farm be proven due to inability to trace the market's egg source. The PT 36 outbreak ceased after elimination of the contaminated flock. This episode underlines the considerable potential of adequate epidemiological and microbiological investigations of food-borne outbreaks to improve prevention and control of communicable diseases. The source of the S. Typhimurium DT U291 outbreak--which initially prompted this investigation--is still not identified and accounts for more than 300 human cases until August 2005.

Abstract:In commercial layer poultry farming, molt induction is an important tool used by egg producers to prolong the production cycle of laying hens. Conventional molt induction programs involve total feed withdrawal, which raises questions about animal welfare and increased infection susceptibility. The high incidence of paratyphoid salmonellosis infections in commercial poultry farming is still an important health challenge because in addition to affecting the birds, such infections also cause public health problems. In this context, experiments were performed with laying hens at 79 wk of age to compare the conventional forced molting method (fasting) with an alternative method (free wheat bran supply) and determine their effect on the persistence of vaccine antibodies against Newcastle disease, the control and reduction of experimentally inoculated Salmonella Enteritidis, and the performance and egg quality of hens. A reduction (P < 0.05) of Salmonella Enteritidis in the crop and lower production of corticosterone were observed in the birds that received wheat bran compared with those subjected to total fasting. Moreover, a better performance (P < 0.05) with regard to egg production, egg mass, and feed conversion/kg and dozen eggs was observed in the hens that received the alternative treatment compared to the conventional forced molting method. Thus, the use of wheat bran for forced molting was found to be feasible and met the welfare needs of the hens.
