Abstract:In order to effectively extract no-carrier-added radioactive hafnium, such as 176Hf in archaeological dating or 182Hf in nuclear astrophysics, three dissolution methods, the alkali melting, the acid dissolution, and a combination of both were studied by using 181Hf as a tracer whose γ-rays were measured with a HPGe gamma spectrometer. The radiochemical yield of 181Hf during its separation and purification from the leaching solution by anionic exchange chromatography, cationic exchange chromatography, and solvent extraction with N-benzoyl-N-phenylhydroxylamine were separately studied. A complete process for dissolution, concentration, separation and purification of hafnium from rack sample is suggested. The radiochemical yields for each step were measured. A recovery of 94% in the rock sample dissolution stage, and 52% in the separation and purification stage are achieved.

Abstract:To partition effectively Cs(I) and Sr(II), two harmful heat emitting nuclides, from a highly active liquid waste by extraction chromatography, two kinds of macroporous silica-based polymeric materials, Calix[4]arene-R14/SiO2-P and TODGA/SiO2-P, were synthesized. Two chelating agents, 1,3-[(2,4-diethyl-heptylethoxy)oxy]-2,4-crown-6-calix[4]arene (Calix[4]arene-R14), an excellent supramolecular compound having molecular recognition ability for Cs(I), and N,N,N′,N′-tetraoctyl-3-oxapentane-1,5-diamide (TODGA) were impregnated and immobilized into the pores of SiO2-P particles support by a vacuum sucking technique. The loading and elution of 11 typical simulated fission and non-fission products from 4.0M or 2.0M HNO3 were performed at 298K. It was found that in the first column packed with the Calix[4]arene-R14/SiO2-P, all of the simulated elements were separated effectively into two groups: (1) Na(I), K(I), Sr(II), Fe(III), Ba(II), Ru(III), Pd(II), Zr(IV), and Mo(VI) (noted as Sr-group); (2) Cs(I)–Rb(I) (Cs-group) by eluting with 4.0M HNO3 and distilled water, respectively. The harmful element Cs(I) flowed into the second group along with Rb(I) because of their close sorption and elution properties towards Calix[4]arene-R14/SiO2-P, while Sr(II) showed no sorption and flowed into Sr-containing group. In the second column packed with TODGA/SiO2-P, the Sr-group was separated into (1) Ba(II), Ru(III), Na(I), K(I), Fe(III), and Mo(VI) (non-sorption group); (2) Sr(II); (3) Pd(II); and (4) Zr(IV) by eluting with 2.0M HNO3, 0.01M HNO3, 0.05M DTPA–pH 2.5, and 0.5M H2C2O4, respectively. Sr(II) adsorbed towards TODGA/SiO2-P flowed into the second group and showed the excellent separation efficiency from others. Based on the elution behavior of the tested elements, an advanced PREC (Partitioning and Recovery of two heat generators from an acidic HLW (high activity liquid waste) by Extraction Chromatography) process was proposed.

Abstract:A novel macroporous silica-based supramolecular recognition compound 1,3-[(2,4-diethyl heptylethoxy)oxy]-2,4-crown-6-Calix[4]arene (Calix[4]arene-R14) polymeric composite (Calix[4]+Oct)/SiO2-P was prepared. It was synthesized by impregnating and immobilizing a mixture of Calix[4]arene-R14 and n-octanol into the pores of the macroporous SiO2-P particles. The adsorption of Cs(I) and some typical fission and non-fission products (FPs) contained in high level liquid waste (HLLW) such as Na(I), K(I), Cs(I), Rb(I), Sr(II), and Ba(II) onto (Calix[4]+Oct)/SiO2-P was investigated by examining the influence of contact time and the HNO3 concentration at 298K. It was found that with an increase in the concentration of HNO3, the adsorption of Cs(I) onto (Calix[4]+Oct)/SiO2-P increased from 0.324M to 4.0M HNO3 and then decreased to 7.0M HNO3. At the optimum HNO3 concentration of 4.0M HNO3, (Calix[4]+Oct)/SiO2-P showed excellent adsorption ability and high selectivity for Cs(I) over all of the tested elements except Rb(I). The chromatographic separation of Cs(I) from a simulated HLLW containing ∼5.0mM of the tested elements was performed by (Calix[4]+Oct)/SiO2-P packed column at 298K. Na(I), K(I), Sr(II), and Ba(II) showed no adsorption and were eluted into effluent along with 4.0M HNO3. Cs(I) and Rb(I) adsorbed by (Calix[4]+Oct)/SiO2-P could be effectively eluted with water and separated from the others. It is demonstrated that (Calix[4]+Oct)/SiO2-P is promising to apply in the separation of Cs(I), one of the heat emitting nuclides, from an acidic HLLW by extraction chromatography.

Abstract:Based on the intermolecular modification of 1,3-[(2,4-diethylheptylethoxy)oxy]-2,4-crown-6-calix[4] arene (Calix[4]) with 4,4',(5')-di(t-butylcyclohexano)-18-crown-6 (DBC), a hybridized macroporous silica-based supramolecular recognition material, Calix[4]@DBC/SiO2-P, was prepared. The agents were impregnated and immobilized into the pores of the SiO2-P particles support. The adsorption of Cs(I), Sr(II), and some typical coexistent metals onto Calix[4]@DBC/SiO2-P was investigated. The influence of contact time and HNO3 concentration in the range of 0.4-6.0 M was studied. Calix[4]@DBC/SiO2-P exhibited high adsorption ability and selectivity for Sr(II) and Cs(I) except for Rb(I) and BA(II). The simultaneous partitioning of Cs(I) and Sr(II) from a simulated highly active liquid waste was performed by Calix[4]@DBC/ SiO2-P packed column. They were effectively eluted with water and flowed into effluent along with Rb(I) and Ba(II), while others showed no adverse impact. Synthesis of Two Novel Macroporous Silica-Based Impregnated Polymeric Composites and Their Application in Highly Active Liquid Waste Partitioning by Extraction Chromatography

Abstract:Two kinds of novel macroporous silica-based chelating polymeric adsorption materials, TODGA/SiO2-P and CMPO/SiO2-P, were synthesized by impregnating and immobilizing two chelating agents, N,N,N′,N′-tetraoctyl-3-oxapentane-1,5-diamide (TODGA) and octyl(phenyl)-N,N-diisobutylcarbamoylmethylphoshine oxide (CMPO), into the pores of SiO2-P particles. To separate minor actinides (MA(III)) such as Am(III) and Cm(III), the adsorption and elution of 13 typically simulated fission products from a 3M HNO3 were performed. It was found that in the first column packed with TODGA/SiO2-P, all of the simulated elements were separated effectively into four groups: (1) Cs(I), Mo(VI), and the most portion of Ru(III) (non-adsorption group), (2) Sr(II), small portion of Gd(III) and all of light REs(III) (MA–lRE–Sr group), (3) most of Gd(III) and all heavy RE(III) (hRE group), and (4) Zr(IV), Pd(II), and a little of Ru(III) (Zr–Pd group) by eluting with 3.0M HNO3, 1.0M HNO3, distilled water, and 0.5M H2C2O4, respectively, at 298K. MA(III) was predicted to flow into the second group along with Nd(III) because of their close adsorption-elution onto TODGA/SiO2-P. In the second column packed with CMPO/SiO2-P, MA–lRE–Sr group was separated into (1) Sr(II), (2) middle RE(III) such as Gd(III), Eu(III), Sm(III), and quite small portion of Nd(III) (MA–mRE), and (3) light RE(III) such as La(III), Ce(III), and most of Nd(III) by eluting with 3.0M HNO3 and 0.05M DTPA-pH 2.0, respectively, at 323K. MA(III) was believed to flow into MA–mRE group along with Gd(III) due to their similar adsorption properties towards CMPO/SiO2-P. Based on positions of MA(III) appeared in light and heavy RE(III), an improved MAREC process for MA(III) partitioning from HLW was proposed.
SPEC: A New Process for Strontium and Cesium Partitioning Utilizing Two Macroporous Silica-Based Supramolecular Recognition Agents Impregnated Polymeric Composites

Abstract:To effectively separate two heat generators Cs(I) and Sr(II) from a highly active liquid waste (HLW), two macroporous silica-based polymeric composites (Calix[4] arene-R14 + M)/SiO(2)-P and (DtBuCH18C6 + M)/SiO(2)-P were synthesized. It was done by impregnating and immobilizing the supramolecular recognition agent, 1,3-[(2,4-diethylheptyl ethoxy)oxy]-2,4-crown-6-calix[4] arene (Calix[4] arene-R14) or 4,4',(5')-di-(tert-butylcyclo hexano)-18-crown-6 (DtBuCH18C6), into the pores of the macroporous SiO(2)-P particles with a mean diameter of 50 mm. It was found that in the first column packed with (Calix[4] arene-R14 + M)/SiO(2)-P, all of the tested elements were effectively eluted and separated into two groups: (1) Na(I), K(I), Sr(II), Ba(II), Rh(III), Ru(III), Pd(II), Zr(IV), RE(III) (La-Lu and Y), and Mo(VI) (Sr-containing group), and (2) Cs(I)-Rb(I) (Cs-group) by eluting with 4.0 M HNO(3) and water, respectively, at 298 K. Abstract:To separate Cs(I), a new silica-calix[4]biscrown hybrid material, 1,3-calix[4]arene-bis(naph-crown-6) (CalixBNaphC)@SiO2-P, was synthesized by impregnation in situ and immobilization of agent into the pores of the SiO2-P particles. The materials were characterized by SEM images, FT-IR spectra, nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms and Si-29 solid-state CP/MAS NMR The adsorption of Cs(I) and some typical metals onto CalixBNaphC@SiO2-P was investigated by examining the effect of contact time and HNO3 concentration in the range of 0.4-6.0 M. Enrichment and recovery of Cs(I) in batch experiments were performed by six adsorption and desorption cycles. The removal of Cs(I) was more than 99.1%. Based on the batch results, the chromatographic separation of Cs(I) from 3.0 M HNO3 was conducted by CalixBNaphC@SiO2-P packed column. The effective separation of Cs(I) was achieved utilizing 3.0 M HNO3 and water as eluents. A new process entitled PCEC (Partitioning of Cesium by Extraction Chromatography) for individual separation of Cs(I) was developed. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
A versatile technique for radiochemical separation of medically useful no-carrier-added (nca) radioarsenic from irradiated germanium oxide targets

Abstract:A method for the separation of no-carrier-added (nca) arsenic radionuclides from bulk amounts of irradiated germanium oxide (GeO2) target was developed in view of their potentialities in different biological and nuclear medicine applications. The beta- emitting 77As radionuclide, produced by the decay of 77Ge through the natGe(n,gamma)77Ge nuclear reaction, was used for standardization of the radiochemical separation procedure. The radiochemical separation was performed by precipitation followed by solvent extraction. About 99% post-irradiation recovery of the GeO2 target material, in a form suitable for reuse in future irradiation, was achieved. The developed method was suitable for the production of nca arsenic radionuclides either as trivalent or pentavalent arsenic in various vehicles which provided flexibility of formulations of different kinds of compound. The overall radiochemical yield for the complete separation of 77As was 90%. The separated nca 77As was of high radionuclidic purity and did not contain detectable amounts of the target material. This method can be adopted for the radiochemical separation of other different arsenic radionuclides produced from GeO2 through cyclotron as well as reactor irradiation.
Functionalized Ionic Liquids Based on DODGA with Enhanced Eu(III)/U(VI) Separation Efficiency in Highly Acidic Environment

Abstract:Lanthanides/actinides separation is of importance in many modern industrial engineering fields, e.g. the circulation of the nuclear fuel and rare earth. N,N-dioctyl diglycol amic acid (briefly as DODGA) is known as an effective extractant for extraction of rare earth metal. In this work, two extractants, [N1888][DODGA] and [N4444] [DODGA], were developed by using quaternary ammonium as cations and DODGA as anion. The resultant ionic liquids were used to separate europium from europium-uranium binary component system. The influence of several factors (nitric acid concentration, contact time, temperature, metal ions, extractant concentration, salting agent concentration and stripping) were analyzed. The coordination chemistry of Eu(III) with [N1888][DODGA] and [N4444][DODGA] were investigated by the mole-ratio method. The experimental results confirmed that the separation factors (SF) of Eu(III)/U(VI) were reached 55.44 and 60.35 for [N1888][DODGA] and [N4444] [DODGA]. The stoichiometry of the complex of Eu(III) and [N1888][DODGA] or [N4444][DODGA] were determined as 1:3. Excellent extraction of the target metals and prominent separation factors using these ionic liquids showed that they were viable to separate lanthanides from actinides.
Enhanced Separation of Americium and Curium in Cyanex301 System by Using Formic Acid and Glycolic Acid as Stripping Chelates

Abstract:The distribution equilibria of Am(III) and Cm(III) between the organic phase of bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl)dithiophosphonic acid (purified Cyanex301, HA) in xylene and aqueous solutions containing varying concentrations of formic acid or glycolic acid have been investigated aiming at the separation of the two actinides from each other after the groups separation of Am(III)/Cm(III) from Ln(III) ions. The apparent extraction constants for Am(III) and Cm(III) in the Cyanex301-xylene system are determined to be −8.84 and −9.37, respectively, at 0.01 M ionic strength. The specific ion interaction method (SIT) is used to obtain the stability constants of Am(III) and Cm(III) with nitrate and glycolate for calculating the speciation of the ions in extraction at 25°C and I = 0.01 M. The separation of Cm(III) from Am(III) loaded in 0.5 M HA in xylene can be considerably improved by emplying 0.01 to 0.05 M formic acid or glycolic acid as selective stripping reagents favoring complexation with Cm(III). Specifically, with 0.01 M formic acid or glycolic acid in the aqueous phase, the separation factor (SF) for Am(III) over Cm(III) is improved from 3.61 to 5.87 and 5.26, respectively. Hence, both separations of An(III) from Ln(III) and then Am(III) from Cm(III) are achieved by a selective extraction process at first and then a selective stripping process in one simple efficient system using purified Cyanex301 as extractant in organic phase and carboxylic acids as stripping chelates in aqueous.

Abstract:A switch from batch to continuous manufacturing of gallium-68 (68Ga) and 68Ga-labeled pharmaceuticals can be advantageous, as it recycles isotopically-enriched zinc-68 (68Zn), removes pre- and post-irradiation target manipulations, and provides scalability via dose-on-demand production. Herein we report efficient extraction of radiogallium (66,67,68Ga = *Ga) from ZnCl2/HCl solutions in batch and in flow using a membrane-based liquid-liquid separator. From 5.6 M ZnCl2/3 M HCl, a 1/2 (v/v) diisopropyl ether (iPr2O)/trifluorotoluene (TFT) solvent extracts 76.3 ± 1.9% of *Ga and 1.9 ± 1.6% of Zn in flow using a single pass through. From 1 M ZnCl2/6 M HCl, a 1/2 (v/v) n-butyl methyl ether (n-BuOMe)/TFT solvent extracts 95.7 ± 2.0% of *Ga and 0.005 ± 0.003% of Zn in flow. TFT plays a key role in controlling the interfacial tension between the aqueous and the organic phases, ensuring clean membrane-based separation. The process did not extract Cu, Mn, and Co but did extract Fe. Using HGaCl4 and ZnCl2 as the extractable species, the COSMO-RS theory predicts the solvation-driven extraction of Ga and Zn with a mean unsigned error of prediction of 4.0% and 3.4% respectively.

Abstract:No carrier added 204,206 Bi radioisotopes were produced by alpha induced reaction on Tl 2 CO 3 target. Liquid liquid extraction method using 18-crown-6 dissolved in nitrobenzene and HClO 4 was developed for the separation of NCA 204,206 Bi from bulk Tl target. Bulk Tl was observed to be extracted by the organic phase at higher HClO 4 concentrations leaving NCA Bi radioisotopes in the aqueous phase. At 0.01 M 18-crown-6 concentration with 2 M HClO 4 , separation factor ( S Tl/Bi ) as high as 3.7 × 10 3 was achieved. The separation experiment was repeated with stable isotopes of Bi and Tl. The extent of separation was monitored by ICP-OES and the results corroborated with radiometric methods.

To partition long-lived minor actinides (MA(III)), such as Am(III) and Cm(III) from highly active liquid waste (HLW), the loading and elution of 15 typically simulated fission and non-fission products from a 3.0M HNO3 were performed. In the first column packed with TODGA/SiO2-P, the simulated elements were effectively separated into following groups: (1) non-adsorption group, (2) MA–lRE–FPs group, (3) hRE group, and (4) micro quantity of Zr(IV). MA(III) was predicted to flow into the second group along with Nd(III) due to their close adsorption and elution onto TODGA/SiO2-P. In the second column packed with CMPO/SiO2-P, after conditioning the acidity in MA–lRE–FPs containing 0.05M DTPA to 3.0M HNO3, it was separated into (1) Sr(II) and Pd(II), (2) MA–mRE, (3) lRE, and (4) Zr(IV). MA(III) was believed to flow into MA–mRE effluent along with Gd(III) because of the similar adsorption towards CMPO/SiO2-P. In terms of the position of MA(III) appeared, an improved MAREC process for long-lived MA(III) partitioning from HLW was proposed.
Separation of minor actinides from highly acidic solutions using diglycolamide modified mesoporous silica synthesized via a novel “ring-opening click” reaction

Abstract:Solid-phase extraction represents a promising approach for partitioning of trivalent minor actinides (MAs) from high-level liquid waste, which is crucial for the decontamination of radioactive waste. However, highly acidic effluents poseaformidablechallengefor extraction materials. Herein, the diglycolamide ligands functionalized mesoporous silica robust matrixs were prepared, resulting in rapid and efficient separation of MAs from strong nitric acid media. This paper reports the first modification of SBA-15-type mesoporous silica through a “ring-opening click” reaction under mild conditions. Five modified silica materials with monolayer diglycolamide ligands containing different terminal groups were obtained using low temperature (0–25 °C) procedures. The rigid and open pore structure of SBA-15 is retained under such mild conditions, allowing facile diffusion and open access to the monolayer ligands. The functionalized product SBA-15-DEDGA exhibited a strong affinity for trivalent MAs in highly acidic solutions and could separate trace amounts of radioactive Am(III) from 1 to 8 M nitric acid solutions with high efficiency (> 98%) within 1 min; the largest distribution coefficient exceeded 5 × 104 mL/g. Solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy combined with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy of Eu(III) revealed that the binding mechanism involves direct coordination of Eu(III) to a tridentate oxygen-binding site. Additionally, selective separation of americium from curium was achieved with separation factors up to 191 ± 20 through oxidation of Am(III) by sodium persulfate. The superlative and efficient sorption performance of these materials demonstrates their utility in the immobilization of trivalent actinides and the separation of americium from curium.

The Effective Separation of Gallium, Vanadium, and Aluminum from a Simulated Bayer Solution by Resin Exchange

Abstract:The effective recovery of gallium from wastewater discharge in the Bayer process is promising for the long-term development of gallium resources. The adsorption and desorption behavior of gallium (Ga), vanadium (V), and aluminum (Al) ions on a strong acidic styrene cation exchange resin (JK resin) from a simulated Bayer solution was systematically investigated by static experiments. The results showed that the optimum conditions for separating Ga from V and Al were at low temperatures and short contact times, with 78.30%, 15.16%, and 6.63% of the adsorption efficiency at 25 °C and 60 min, respectively, for Ga, V, and Al. The adsorption kinetics of Ga3+ conformed to the pseudo-second order model, and the static saturation adsorption capacity was 18.25 mg/g. The Langmuir model fitted the adsorption isotherm of gallium well, and the maximum adsorption capacity was 1.11 mg/g at 25 °C. FT-IR spectroscopy and XPS showed that the mechanism of the Ga3+ adsorption was only related to the interaction of the oxygen atoms of the amide oxime group (C=NOH). The separation of Ga, V, and Al can be achieved by desorbing 98% of Al with low concentrations of ammonia and 90% of Ga with low concentrations of hydrochloric acid. The results indicate that JK resin is an efficient adsorbent for separating gallium and vanadium in alkaline solutions.

The Separation of Americium from Light Lanthanides by Cyanex-301 Extraction

Abstract:The extraction behavior of tracer amount of Am-241(3+) and (152-154)EU(3+) from sodium nitrate solution by 1 M Cyanex 301 in kerosene are quite similar. But in the presence of macro amount of Nd + Pr nitrates (0.2-0.7 M), Cyanex 301 saponified to 16% selectively extracts Am-241(3+). The separation factors Am/Eu and Am/Nd + Pr are of 500 and 600 respectively. In a batch counter current fractional extraction process with 3 extraction stages and 3 scrubbing stages, the organic phase contained 99.9% Am-241 and <1% Nd + Pr. The radiolytic stability of the extractant has been observed.

Abstract:Gallium-68 [ t 1/2 : 67.7 min, β + (89 %)] has application in PET imaging mainly for prostate cancer and neuroendocrine tumours. Gallium-68 is generally obtained from a 68 Ge/ 68 Ga generator. It is therefore an important task to prepare 68 Ge ( t 1/2 = 271 days) radiochemical for the manufacture of 68 Ge/ 68 Ga generator to cater for the needs of various nuclear medicine centres. Germanium-68 has been produced successfully after irradiation of indigenously developed Ga–Ni targets in a 30 MeV cyclotron and chemical processing of the irradiated targets using an indigenous semi-automated module. The Ga–Ni targets were prepared by an electroplating method. The 68 Ge has been radiochemically separated from irradiated Ga–Ni targets using Sephadex G-25 column chromatography. The chemical separation yield and radionuclidic purity of 68 Ge were about 70 % ( n = 3) and about 98.3 % ( n = 3), respectively.

Separation of Americium from Fission Product Lanthanides Using Cyanex 301 Extraction

Abstract:The extraction behavior of bis (2,4,4-trimethylpentyl) dithiophosphinic acid (HBTMPDTP), purified from Cyanex 301, was studied for extracting Am 3+ and trivalent lanthanides (Lns). HBTMPDTP shows very high selectivity for Am. Separation factor (SF) of Am and Eu, SF Am/Eu ,(trace amount) reaches a high value of 5.9×10 3 and SF Am/(Pr+Nd) (macro amount) is about 2×10 3. The mathematical model for the distribution ratios and process parameters calculated for HBTMPDTP extraction was established and the calculated results were verified experimentally. In a five-stage countercurrent process, the extraction rates of Am and Lns were 99.999% and 0.14%, respectively, to fulfill the separation requirements. The efficiency of this process was also verified in a cross-flow extraction experiment using a genuine Am-FPLns fraction. In the presence of TBP, the extraction of Am and Eu is enhanced, but their separation is reduced to some extent. A fairly good separation was achieved in a fractional extraction process using a mixture of HBTMPDTP and TBP in kerosene at low pH.

Abstract:A process for actinide(III) and lanthanum(III) extraction separation from high-level liquid waste (HLLW) was proposed, with N,N,N',N'-tetraoctyl diglycolamide (TODGA) as the extractant, tri-n-butyl phosphate (TBP) as the phase modifier and 2,6-bis[1-(propan-1-ol)-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl]pyridine (PyTri-Diol or PTD) as hydrophilic stripping agent. This 'hot test' was successfully carried out, achieving 99.92% removal of americium-241 (241Am) with a separation factor SF(Eu/Am) of 3.8 × 103 in the actinide(III) product solution. The results show that bisamide podand extractants can effectively realize the extraction and separation of actinide(III) and lanthanum(III) from Chinese commercial HLLW and thus have a bright practical application potential for the treatment of commercial HLLW.

Abstract:Americium and curium, present in spent nuclear fuel, are carried forward to the high-level wastes (HLW) upon its reprocessing within the closed nuclear fuel cycle strategy. These minor actinides are required to be extracted efficiently to mitigate the long-term radiotoxicity of the HLW, which in some countries is the proposed strategy for the safe management of radioactive wastes emanating from the reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel. While both Am and Cm are co-extracted by most of extractants used for actinide partitioning and lanthanide-actinide separations, their mutual separation makes Am transmutation less complicated. In their most stable (trivalent) oxidation state, these elements are very difficult to separate. In this review, solvent extraction systems for the mutual separation of Am(III) and Cm(III) from nitric acid solutions are discussed. The extraction systems for the separation of americium directly from high-level liquid waste and from isolated mixtures of americium and curium are considered.
