Abstract:Abstract Biochar is a promising pyrolysed carbon-enriched soil amendment and has excellent properties for agriculture production and to remediate environmental pollution. A set of reviews were conducted on biochar production by pyrolysis process from various waste biomass which has drawn extensive interest due to the low cost of production with several benefits. As many potential technologies have been developed, there are still several knowledge gaps that have been identified for some key points to contribute a comprehensive study towards soil fertility, nutrient and water retention, soil microbial activity, plant growth and yield, pollution remediation, mitigation of greenhouse gas emission and an improvement in the farmer’s economy to achieve maximum profit by adopting environmentally friendly technique “pyrolysis”. Therefore, this review explored a detailed study on food waste biochar production by the pyrolysis process and its impact on different applications as an amendment. Slow pyrolysis process at low and medium temperatures is a potential amendment for agriculture production and soil and water remediation by enhancing biochar properties like carbon, BET surface area, cation exchange capacity, zeta potential, and nutrient content, etc. with minimum ash content. The biochar enhances soil water and nutrient retention capacity, crop yield, and improved microbial community at different soil quality. Additionally, food waste to biochar is a realistic adsorbent and economical carbon sequester to mitigate GHG emissions. This review conducted a brief assessment of the knowledge gaps and future research directions for researchers, encouraging investigators, stakeholders, and policymakers to make the best possible decision for food waste valorization.
Value-Added Bio-carbon Production through the Slow Pyrolysis of Waste Bio-oil: Fundamental Studies on Their Structure–Property–Processing Co-relation

Abstract:The present work addresses the transformation of bio-oil into valuable biocarbon through slow pyrolysis. The biocarbons produced at three different temperatures (400, 600, and 900 °C), 10 °C min-1 heating rate, and 30 min holding time were tested for their surface morphology, thermal stability, elemental composition, functionality, particle size, and thermal and electrical conductivity. The physicochemical study of bio-oil showed substantial carbon content, higher heating value, and lower nitrogen content. Also, the Thermogravimetric analyzer-FourierTransform Infrared Spectroscopy (TGA-FTIR) study of bio-oil confirmed that the majority of gases released were hydrocarbons, carbonyl products, ethers, CO, and CO2, with a minor percentage of water and alcohol. Overall, it was found that the pyrolysis temperature has the dominant role in the yield and properties of biocarbon. The physicochemical characterization of biocarbon showed that the higher temperature based pyrolyzed biocarbon (600 and 900 °C) improved the properties in terms of thermal stability, thermal conductivity, graphitic content, ash content, and carbon content. Furthermore, the elemental and Energy-Dispersive Spectroscopy study of biocarbon confirmed the substantial depletion in oxygen and hydrogen at a higher temperature (600 and 900 °C) than the lower temperature based pyrolyzed biocarbon (400 °C). Additionally, the purest form of the biocarbon is found at a higher temperature (900 °C) with higher thermal stability and carbon content. The study of the surface morphology of biocarbon revealed that the higher temperature (600 and 900 °C) biocarbon showed larger and harder particles than the lower temperature biocarbon (400 °C); however, the electrical conductivity of biocarbon decreased, whereas thermal conductivity increased, with an increase in the pyrolysis temperatures. Moreover, the particle size analysis of biocarbon confirmed that most of the particles were found in the range of 1 μm. The increased thermal stability, carbon content, and graphitic content and the lower ash content endorse biocarbon as an excellent feedstock for carbon-based energy storage materials.

Abstract:The excessive dependency on fossil fuel resources could be curtailed by the efficient conversion of lignocellulosic biomass. Biochar, a porous carbonaceous product synthesized exploiting thermochemical conversion pathway, could be an environment-friendly replacement of fossil fuel resources. Slow pyrolysis, a sub-class among various thermochemical conversion techniques, has gained immense popularity owing to its potential to convert biomass to biochar. Furthermore, biochar obtained as the by-product of slow pyrolysis has attracted enormous popularity due to its proven role and application in the multidisciplinary areas of engineering and environmental remediation applications. The physicochemical quality of biochar and its performance is significantly dependent on the feedstock type and pyrolysis process parameters. Therefore, further experimental research and investigations in terms of lignocellulose biomass type and pyrolytic process parameters (temperature, heating rate and reaction time) are essential to produce biochar with desired physicochemical features for effective utilization. This review presents an updated report on slow pyrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass, impact of different pyrolysis parameters and degradation pathway involved in the evolution properties of biomass. The influence of the feedstock type and lignocellulosic composition on the biochar properties are also discussed meticulously. The co-relationship between biochar yield at different pyrolysis temperatures and the development of textural properties provides valuable information for their effective utilization as a functional carbon material. Additionally, an extensive study was undertaken to collate and discuss the excellent physicochemical characteristics of biochar and summarizes the benefits of biochar application for diverse industrial purposes. Biochar is acknowledged for its excellent physicochemical properties owing to the thermal treatment and as a result its prospective diverse industrial applications such as for soil treatment, carbon sequestration, adsorbent (wastewater treatment or CO 2 capture), producing activated carbon for gold recovery, energy storage and supercapacitor are summarized systematically in this review paper. For instance, biochar when applied in soil have shown improvement in soil respiration by 1.9 times. Furthermore, biochar when used to capture CO 2 from flue gas stream under post-combustion scenario has demonstrated superior capture performance (2.8 mmol/g) compared to commercial activated carbon. This paper identified the knowledge gaps and outlooks in the field of the advancements of biochar from slow pyrolysis for targeted engineering applications mainly in the field of environmental remediation and energy harvesting.

Abstract:The finite nature, regional availability, and environmental problems associated with the use of fossil fuels have forced all countries of the world to look for renewable eco-friendly alternatives. Agricultural waste biomasses, generated through the cultivation of cereal and noncereal crops, are being considered renewable and viable alternatives to fossil fuels. In view of this, there has been a global spurt in research efforts for using abundantly available agricultural wastes as feedstocks for obtaining energy and value-added products through biochemical and thermal conversion routes. In the present work, the thermochemical characteristics and thermal degradation behavior of sugarcane leaves (SCL) and tops were studied. The batch pyrolysis was carried out in a fixed-bed tubular reactor to obtain biochar, bio-oil, and pyrolytic gas. Effects of bed height (4-16 cm), particle size (0.180-0.710 mm), heating rate (15-30 °C/min), and temperature (350-650 °C) were investigated. The maximum yields of bio-oil (44.7%), biogas (36.67%), and biochar (36.82%) were obtained at 550, 650, and 350 °C, respectively, for a 16 cm deep bed of particles of size 0.18-0.30 mm at the heating rate of 25 °C/min. The composition of bio-oil was analyzed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), proton nuclear magnetic resonance (H NMR), and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) techniques. Several aliphatic, aromatic, phenolic, ketonic, and other acidic compounds were found in the bio-oil. The biochar had a highly porous structure and several micronutrients, making it useful as a soil conditioner. In the middle temperature ranges, biogas had more methane and CO and less hydrogen, but at higher temperatures, hydrogen was predominant.

Abstract:The valorization of agricultural by-products represents a promising approach to sustainable development. In the transition toward a circular economy, Opuntia ficus indica peels (OFIP) can be converted into valuable products, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions and contributing to climate change mitigation. This study proposes the valorization of OFIP residues through pyrolysis, focusing on biochar production. The main objective of the present study is to optimize OFIP pyrolysis, considering both slow- and fast-pyrolysis processes at temperatures ranging from 500 to 700°C. Therefore, two different pyrolysis technologies were applied: fixed bed and spouted bed reactors for slow and fast pyrolysis, respectively. The novel approach of the study lies in employing the same biomass feedstock in two different pyrolysis technologies, enabling a direct comparison of the effects of these pyrolysis approaches on biochar production. Moreover, the resulting biochars underwent comprehensive characterization by elemental, proximate, chemical composition, and thermogravimetric (TG) analysis, X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), CO 2 adsorption, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Additionally, the potential of the obtained biochar for subsequent valorization was evaluated, and the most suitable biochar for a specific application was determined based on its properties. The obtained results revealed that slow pyrolysis of OFIP yielded slightly higher biochar amounts than fast pyrolysis, with the highest biochar production at 500°C. Regarding biochar characterization, fast pyrolysis samples had higher fixed carbon and ash contents than the ones produced from slow pyrolysis. Moreover, fast-pyrolysis biochars showed a more developed porous structure, attaining a specific surface area of 328.61 m 2 g −1 and a micropore volume of 0.13 cm 3 g −1 at 700°C. This study concluded that fast-pyrolysis biochars may be suitable for catalytic applications, whereas slow-pyrolysis biochars may be more appropriate for adsorption and soil applications. Nevertheless, the high ash content of the OFIP-derived biochar makes it unsuitable to be used for power generation.

Abstract:Agricultural residues in excess of livestock fodder are garnering global attention and stern concerns owing to their accountable share in environmental hazards due to the lack of effective disposal mechanisms and indiscriminate burning. Recycling these residues for biochar production using pyrolysis is a cost-effective and locally feasible technique which offers a twin-prong solution addressing both climate and soil health issues. This research work compares a portable kiln prototype that is affordable and easy to use, with a muffle furnace at three distinct pyrolytic temperatures (400 °C, 500 °C, and 600 °C) to produce biochar from the stalks of maize and pigeonpea. The biochar properties were characterized using Electron Microscopy-Electron Dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transmission Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA). The findings indicate significant variations in biochar properties based on raw material source, pyrolytic method, and varied temperatures. Higher pyrolysis temperatures were found to reduce the amorphous organic phase and alter the ultrastructure of biochar, as evidenced by XRD analysis. SEM imaging showed macropores in oval and round shapes with crystalline deposits. The carbon content, as per EDX, decreased with increasing temperature, aligning with changes in functional groups. Edinburgh's stability test revealed that kiln biochar has more stable carbon content compared to biochar produced using muffle furnace and the stable carbon increased with the rise in temperature. A comparative analysis demonstrated that biochar quality at 400–500 °C in a muffle furnace was on par with that produced in the portable kiln at 400 °C. Therefore, considering the kiln's portability, efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and scalability, it is a promising decentralized method for biochar production, offering a cutting-edge solution for agricultural waste management and soil carbon enhancement.

Abstract:The main objective of the present study is to turn the wheel from waste to wealth by sustainable rice straw management practices over field burning in India. For that, slow pyrolysis of rice straw was carried out in a fixed bed reactor. The result indicated an increase in process temperature (300–600 °C) led to the decreased biochar yield, while pH (8.28–11.4), pore-volume (0.0087–0.059 cm3/g), surface area (12.78–83.06 m2/g), and HHV (17.63–20.13 MJ/kg) of biochar increased. The maximum bio-oil yield was obtained at 500 °C, and its characterization study indicated a high amount of phenol and aromatic compounds. The composition of H2 (1.9–17.72%) and CH4 (2.3–8.82%) in the gas and heating value (6.5–9.4 MJ/Nm3) of the gas increased with temperature. The energy (84.22–89.61%) and exergy efficiency (74.41–87.37%) of the pyrolysis system increased with process temperature, and the thermodynamic optimization was achieved at 600 °C.

Abstract:Wastes from oil palm plantations and mill processing are renewable resources for bio-energy and biochemicals development. The five most abundant oil palm wastes are empty fruit bunch (EFB), palm kernel shell (PKS), palm mesocarp fiber (PMF), palm frond (PF), and palm trunk (PT). These different types of biomass have different properties which can significantly influence the bio-oil products and pyrolysis performance. Bio-oil and biochar were produced by slow pyrolysis of these wastes in a fixed-bed reactor at 600 °C for 60 min. The biomass and pyrolysis products were comparatively characterized using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The highest yield (25.5 wt%) of bio-oil was obtained from PF, while the highest yield (29.7 wt%) of biochar was obtained from PMF. Fatty acids were the main compounds in bio-oil obtained from EFB and PMF, while those from PKS, PF, and PT contained more aromatics and their boiling point distributions were lower than EFB and PMF bio-oils. Biochar from all the materials decomposed in two stages and showed similar compositions. The variations in the yields and properties of products resulted from differences in the properties of feedstocks. The results could contribute useful data for selection and controlling the pyrolysis of oil palm wastes.

Abstract:In this study, pyrolysis of microalgal remnants was investigated for recovery of energy and nutrients. Chlorella vulgaris biomass was first solvent-extracted for lipid recovery then the remnants were used as the feedstock for fast pyrolysis experiments using a fluidized bed reactor at 500 °C. Yields of bio-oil, biochar, and gas were 53, 31, and 10 wt.%, respectively. Bio-oil from C. vulgaris remnants was a complex mixture of aromatics and straight-chain hydrocarbons, amides, amines, carboxylic acids, phenols, and other compounds with molecular weights ranging from 70 to 1200 Da. Structure and surface topography of the biochar were analyzed. The high inorganic content (potassium, phosphorous, and nitrogen) of the biochar suggests it may be suitable to provide nutrients for crop production. The bio-oil and biochar represented 57% and 36% of the energy content of the microalgae remnant feedstock, respectively.

Abstract:The pyrolysis of biomass (agro and garden waste) pellets in the temperature range of 200–600°C is studied in the present work. The pyrolysis of biomass pellets in a batch reactor generates mainly CO2 and CO gases at 300°C and H2 gas along with C1-C3 hydrocarbons at 600°C. The yield of non-condensable gases, liquid products and biochar was 30, 38 wt.% (30 wt.% bio-oil, 8 wt.% water), and 32 wt.%, respectively. The MS analysis of the bio-oil depicted the presence of light oxygenates, furans, anhydrosugars, and phenolic compounds. The biochar showed porous and macrostructure with various surface functional groups. A kinetic study of thermal decomposition of biomass pellets was performed along with a reaction mechanism of the product formation during the pyrolysis. Net energy return calculations depicted that the pyrolysis system can be self-sustained. The present study demonstrates the possible conversion of biomass pellets into useful products such as acids, aldehydes, phenolic compounds and carbonaceous char.

Abstract:Slow pyrolysis is a complex process that can convert biomass and waste into valuable products. An improved understanding of the influence of process conditions and feedstocks is required to inform process design and optimisation. A continuous auger reactor (300 g/h) was used to process wheat straw under slow pyrolysis conditions, to study the influence of pyrolysis temperature (400, 500, 600 °C) and solid residence time (3, 6, 10 min) on the product yields and char properties. Production of char decreased with pyrolysis temperature (35.0–26.7 wt%), while gas production increased (15.8–29.7 wt%). The yield of liquid product achieved a maximum of 46.8 wt% at 500 °C. Solid residence time did not affect the product yields significantly. Increasing the pyrolysis temperature produced an increase in the calorific value of the char, mainly through an increase in carbon and fixed carbon (FC) contents and a decrease in oxygen and volatile matter (VM) content. Higher solid residence time caused a reduction in the volatile matter of the char. The surface areas from nitrogen porosimetry at 77 K were very low for all the chars tested (below 15 m2 g−1), suggesting that the pores of the char are blocked or narrowed during operation. FTIR data showed a significant reduction in surface chemical functionalities with pyrolysis temperature, such as C-O and CO, and the solid residence time had no significant effect. The produced chars have the potential to be used as solid fuel, as a soil amendment, or as adsorbents for aqueous phase contaminants. Multiple linear models were developed using literature data to estimate the product yields and properties of the char, including volatile matter, fixed carbon, ash content and higher heating values. The predicted values had a good agreement with the actual values with R2 values in the range of 0.75–0.95. Thus, the models can be used for the design and optimisation of char production by slow pyrolysis.

Abstract:Abstract Biochar was produced by fixed‐bed slow pyrolysis from various feedstock biomasses under a range of process conditions. Feedstocks used were pine wood, wheat straw, green waste and dried algae. Process conditions varied were the highest treatment temperature ( HTT ) and residence time. The produced chars were characterized by proximate analysis, CHN ‐elemental analysis, pH in solution, bomb calorimetry for higher heating value, N 2 adsorption for BET surface area and two biological degradation assays (oxygen demand, carbon mineralization in soil). In proximate analysis, it was found that the fixed carbon content (expressed in wt % of dry and ash‐free biochar) in the biochar samples strongly depended on the intensity of the thermal treatment (i.e. higher temperatures and longer residence times in the pyrolysis process). The actual yield in fixed carbon (i.e. the biochar fixed carbon content expressed as wt % of the dry and ash‐free original feedstock biomass weight) was practically insensitive to the highest treatment temperature or residence time. The pH in solution, higher heating value and BET surface positively correlated with pyrolysis temperature. Finally, soil incubation tests showed that the addition of biochar to the soil initially marginally reduced the C‐mineralization rate compared against the control soil samples, for which a possible explanation could be that the soil microbial community needs to adapt to the new conditions. This effect was more pronounced when adding chars with high fixed carbon content (resulting from more severe thermal treatment), as chars with low fixed carbon content (produced through mild thermal treatment) had a larger amount of volatile, more easily biodegradable, carbon compounds.

Abstract:The generation of spent aroma plant/process waste is increasing due to the growth of the essential oil industries due to the demand for essential oils. This study aims to convert such spent aroma plant waste, i.e., spent Lemongrass and Tagetes minuta , into bio-oil and biochar using slow pyrolysis. In this work, pyrolysis is conducted at different temperatures (350–500 °C) at a heating rate of 10 °C/min in a nitrogen atmosphere with a 50 mL/min flow rate. The maximum bio-oil yield obtained for Lemongrass was 37.3 wt% with a biochar yield of 31.6 wt% at 400 °C; however, in the case of Tagetes minuta , the maximum bio-oil yield (39 wt%) was observed at 450 °C with 27.3 wt% of biochar yield. GC-MS analysis of bio-oil indicated its phenolic-rich nature along with other functionalities, i.e., carbonyls, furans, N-containing, and other types. Maximum phenolics observed with 60.27 area% for Lemongrass and 62.75 area% for Tagetes minuta at 450 °C. Finally, to understand the breaking patterns of the biomass framework, flash pyrolysis through the analytical instrument, Py-GC/MS, was carried out at a high heating rate of 20 °C/ms.

Abstract:Environmental restoration and sustainable energy solutions require effective management and utilization of agricultural crop residues to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Biowastes are a valuable resource that can be converted into biofuels and their byproducts, solving the energy crisis and reducing environmental impact. In this study, teff husk, primarily generated in Ethiopia during the production of teff within the agro-industrial sector, is used as a feedstock for slow pyrolysis. Ethiopia generates an estimated annual production of over 1.75 million tons of teff husk, a significant portion of which is incinerated, resulting in significant pollution of the environment. This study focuses on assessing teff husk as a potential material for slow pyrolysis, a crucial stage in biochar production, to tap into its biochar-producing potential. To identify the composition of biomass, the teff husk underwent an initial analysis using thermogravimetry. The significant presence of fixed carbon indicates that teff husk is a viable candidate for pyrolytic conversion into biochar particles. The process of slow pyrolysis took place at three temperatures—specifically, 400, 450, and 500 °C. The maximum biochar yield was achieved by optimizing slow pyrolysis parameters including reaction time, temperature, and heating rate. The optimized reaction time, temperature, and heating rate of 120 min, 400 °C, and 4.2 °C/min, respectively, resulted in the highest biochar yield of 43.4 wt.%. Furthermore, biochar's physicochemical, SEM-EDX, FTIR, and TGA characterization were performed. As the temperature of biochar increases, its carbon content and thermal stability increases as well. Unlike fuel recovery, the results suggest that teff-husk can be used as a feedstock for biochar production.

Abstract:Waste residues produced by agricultural and forestry industries can generate energy and are regarded as a promising source of sustainable fuels. Pyrolysis, where waste biomass is heated under low-oxygen conditions, has recently attracted attention as a means to add value to these residues. The material is carbonized and yields a solid product known as biochar. In this study, eight types of biomass were evaluated for their suitability as raw material to produce biochar. Material was pyrolyzed at either 350 °C or 500 °C and changes in ash content, volatile solids, fixed carbon, higher heating value (HHV) and yield were assessed. For pyrolysis at 350 °C, significant correlations (p < 0.01) between the biochars’ ash and fixed carbon content and their HHVs were observed. Masson pine wood and Chinese fir wood biochars pyrolyzed at 350 °C and the bamboo sawdust biochar pyrolyzed at 500 °C were suitable for direct use in fuel applications, as reflected by their higher HHVs, higher energy density, greater fixed carbon and lower ash contents. Rice straw was a poor substrate as the resultant biochar contained less than 60% fixed carbon and a relatively low HHV. Of the suitable residues, carbonization via pyrolysis is a promising technology to add value to pecan shells and Miscanthus.
Slow Pyrolysis of De-Oiled Rapeseed Cake: Influence of Pyrolysis Parameters on the Yield and Characteristics of the Liquid Obtained

Abstract:Pyrolysis of biomass converts all components into liquid, gaseous, and solid products without the need for component separation. However, the composition of liquid products from lignocellulosic biomass is usually complex and difficult to upgrade. Slow pyrolysis of de-oiled rapeseed cake, an agricultural waste from the rapeseed pressing process, was carried out for liquid and solid fuel production. The maximum yield of bio-oil obtained was 51.6 wt.% under the optimized conditions. The HHV of the bio-oil, containing mainly acids, hydrocarbons, esters, and alcohols, was 32.82 MJ·kg−1, similar to that of bio-diesel, to be promising in downstream upgrading because the fuel properties such as higher caloric value, limited moisture content, as well as neutral pH value, were close to commercial bio-diesel. The gaseous fraction mainly consisted of CO, C1, C2 hydrocarbons, H2, and CO2, and the corresponding LHV reached 7.63 MJ·Nm−3. The yield of bio-chars declined from 41.8 wt.% at 400 °C to 28.8 wt.% at 800 °C, whereas the corresponding HHV varied from 29.03 MJ·kg−1 to 30.14 MJ·kg−1, comparative to coal, indicating a promising candidate for solid fuels or functional carbon. The liquid product shows promise as feedstock for producing high-quality fuel.

Abstract:Biofuels and biomaterials are gaining increased attention because of their ecofriendly nature and renewable precursors. Biochar is a recalcitrant carbonaceous product obtained from pyrolysis of biomass and other biogenic wastes. Biochar has found many notable applications in diverse areas because of its versatile physicochemical properties. Some of the promising biochar applications discussed in this paper include char gasification and combustion for energy production, soil remediation, carbon sequestration, catalysis, as well as development of activated carbon and specialty materials with biomedical and industrial uses. The pyrolysis temperature and heating rates are the limiting factors that determine the biochar properties such as fixed carbon, volatile matter, mineral phases, surface area, porosity and pore size distribution, alkalinity, electrical conductivity, cation-exchange capacity, etc. A broad investigation of these properties determining biochar application is rare in literature. With this objective, this paper comprehensively reviews the evolution of biochar from several lignocellulosic biomasses influenced by pyrolysis temperature and heating rate. Lower pyrolysis temperatures produce biochar with higher yields, and greater levels of volatiles, electrical conductivity and cation-exchange capacity. Conversely, higher temperatures generate biochar with a greater extent of aromatic carbon, alkalinity and surface area with microporosity. Nevertheless, this coherent review summarizes the valorization potentials of biochar for various environmental, industrial and biomedical applications.Graphical Abstract

Abstract:Waste biomass can be used as an alternative source of energy. However, such use requires prior treatment of the material. This paper describes the physicochemical characteristics of biochar obtained by the thermochemical decomposition of six types of agricultural waste biomass: residues from the production of flavored spirits (a pulp of lime, grapefruit and lemon), beetroot pulp, apple pomace, brewer’s spent grain, bark and municipal solid waste (bark, sawdust, off-cuts and wood chips). The biomass conversion process was studied under conditions of limited oxygen access in a reactor. The temperature was raised from 450 to 850 °C over 30 min, followed by a residence time of 60 min. The solid products were characterized in terms of their elemental compositions, mass, energy yield and ash content. The gaseous products from pyrolysis of the biomass were also analyzed and their compositions were characterized by GCMS (Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry). The carbonization process increased the carbon content by, on average, 1.7 times, from an average percentage of 46.09% ± 3.65% for biomass to an average percentage of 74.72% ± 5.36% for biochars. After carbonization, the biochars were found to have a net calorific value of between 27 and 32 MJ/kg, which is comparable or even higher than good-quality coal (eco pea coal 24–26 MJ/kg). The net calorific values show that the volatile products can also be considered as a valuable source of energy.

Abstract:This study presents the results of the biomass pyrolysis process focusing on biochar production and its potential energetic (as solid fuel) and material (as adsorbent) applications. Three kinds of biomass waste were investigated: wheat straw, spent coffee grounds, and brewery grains. The pyrolysis process was carried out under nitrogen atmosphere at 400 and 500 °C (residence time of 20 min). A significant increase in the carbon content was observed in the biochars, e.g., from 45% to 73% (at 400 °C) and 77% (at 500 °C) for spent coffee grounds. In addition, the structure and morphology were investigated using scanning electron microscopy. Thermal properties were studied using a simultaneous thermal analysis under an oxidising atmosphere. The chemical activation was completed using KOH. The sorption properties of the obtained biochars were tested using chromium ion (Cr3+) adsorption from liquid solution. The specific surface area and average pore diameter of each sample were determined using the BET method. Finally, it was found that selected biochars can be applied as adsorbent or a fuel. In detail, brewery grains-activated carbon had the highest surface area, wheat straw-activated carbon adsorbed the highest amount of Cr3+, and wheat straw chars presented the best combustion properties.

Abstract:Slow pyrolysis opened new channels for the highly efficient utilization of sunflower straw in salt-affected regions and obtained not only 28% to 40% biochar, but also 29% to 44% syngas and 29% to 31% bio-oil. Biochar yield decreased with increasing temperature, whereas syngas increased and bio-oil changed minimally. Both syngas and bio-oil had potential value as fuel. The biochar produced at 700 degrees C had the highest pH, ash content, and water-soluble K+ of 11.9, 212 g/kg, and 23.9 g/kg, respectively, and the lowest atomic ratios for H/C and O/C of 0.19 and 0.10, respectively. However, C, other minerals, surface area, and cation exchange capacity (CEC) of biochar reached a stable level at 500 degrees C. Therefore, the differential characteristics of the biochar derived from sunflower straw might show potential value in removing pollutants and improving soil fertility at 500 degrees C.
