Abstract:Hydrogen energy has the merits of high energy value and zero carbon emissions, but its practical application is hindered by the intensive energy input required for dehydrogenation of liquid hydrocarbons (170-300 degrees C). Herein, toward highly efficient dehydrogenation of saturated N-heterocycles, assembly of PdO on carbon vacancy-abundant carbon nitride skeleton derived from in situ Zr-doping was demonstrated to improve catalyst with superior performance under mild conditions. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed that the Zr-doped carbon nitride (Zr-C3N4) support showed a higher number of lone pair electrons and faster electron transfer rate compared with the parent. Strong interaction between PdO and the C3N4 skeleton was proved by the hydrogenation temperature-programmed reduction (H-2-TPR) and XPS. By efficiently turning the electronic properties of PdO by Zr-C3N4, in which the affinity influences the strength of the metal-support interactions and therefore PdO dispersion, the as-prepared prototype catalyst PdO/Zr-C3N4 was capable of achieving complete dehydrogenation of a series of saturated N-heterocycles at only 140 degrees C within 8 h, supassing the performance rendered by most of the catalytic systems reported so far. This work offers a promising pathway for energy-efficient and cost-effective hydrogen energy utilization under practical conditions.

Abstract:Developing efficient and low-cost electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is important for clean energy systems. Non-noble transition metals are the most promising candidates for replacement of conventional Pt group catalysts for the HER. However, most non-noble metals show poor HER activity due to their intrinsic electronic structures. Herein, we use a multifaceted heteroatom doping method (nitrogen, sulfur, and phosphorus) to directly and continuously fine-tune the electronic structure and HER activity of non-noble metals without changing their chemical composition. As a proof-of-concept, a nitrogen and phosphorus dual-doped Ni catalyst is explored by precisely manipulating doping modes, revealing the best HER performance among all doped Ni catalysts tested. The doping-induced charge redistribution in the Ni metal significantly influences its catalytic performance for the HER in alkaline media, which is confirmed by merging theoretical calculation with synchrotron-based spectroscopy. The principle that can bridge the doping modes and HER activity of the doped catalysts is built with a volcano relationship.

Abstract:It is proposed and reported a strategy involving heteroatoms (Ni) doping to modulate the surface state energy levels of Pd3Sn, which can enable more surface state electrons to interact with hydrogen, optimize the adsorption of hydrogen intermediates, thereby reducing Gibbs free energy (ΔGH) of adsorbed hydrogen and improving its HER performance. Topological materials carrying topological surface states (TSSs) have extraordinary carrier mobility and robustness, which provide a new platform for searching for efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts. However, the majority of these TSSs originate from the sp band of topological quantum catalysts rather than the d band. Here, based on the density functional theory calculation, it is reported a topological semimetal Pd3Sn carrying TSSs mainly derived from d orbital and proposed that optimizing surface state electrons of Pd3Sn by introduction heteroatoms (Ni) can promote hybridization between hydrogen atoms and electrons, thereby reducing the Gibbs free energy (ΔGH) of adsorbed hydrogen and improving its HER performance. Moreover, this is well verified by electrocatalytic experiment results, the Ni‐doped Pd3Sn (Ni0.1Pd2.9Sn) show much lower overpotential (−29 mV vs RHE) and Tafel slope (17 mV dec−1) than Pd3Sn (−39 mV vs RHE, 25 mV dec−1) at a current density of 10 mA cm−2. Significantly, the Ni0.1Pd2.9Sn nanoparticles exhibit excellent stability for HER. The electrocatalytic activity of Ni0.1Pd2.9Sn nanoparticles is superior to that of commercial Pt. This work provides an accurate guide for manipulating surface state electrons to improve the HER performance of catalysts.

Abstract:The electrocatalysis of water to hydrogen is expected to play an essential and significant role in the development of future electrochemical energy conversion and storage technologies, together with the exploration of green energy. However, the high cost of noble metal catalysts remains a key challenge and it still requires further investigations to fabricate high mass activity and stable electrocatalysts. Herein, we report a facile and economical approach to achieve atomically dispersed palladium on the nitrogen-doped mesoporous carbon matrix (Pd 1 /NMC) as the electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution, which exhibits an overpotential of 37 and 118 mV at the current density of 10 and 100 mA cm −2 , respectively, superior to the commercial platinum/carbon (Pt/C) and palladium/carbon (Pd/C) catalysts. Moreover, the mass activity of the Pd 1 /NMC catalyst surpasses that of Pt/C and Pd/C at 100 mV versus RHE in HER. Systematic characterizations demonstrate that the Pd atoms are atomically dispersed on the surface of NMC and stabilized by active nitrogen sites, inducing the isolated Pd atoms to form a favorable bivalent oxidation state. This method provides an atomic-level insights into preparing superior single-atom catalysts for energy-related applications and devices.

Abstract:The manipulation of central atom coordination environments can greatly boost catalytic performances and promote the understanding of associated mechanisms in both sub-nanometer clusters and atomically dispersed catalysts. In this study, sub-nanometer “raft”-like PtNx clusters were synthesized on a TiO2 support, and the significant enhancement effects of the Pt–N coordination structure on the performance of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) are demonstrated. In acidic media, the PtNx catalyst display a superior HER activity (37.5 A mg-1 Pt) and turnover frequencies (37.9H2 s-1) at overpotential of 50 mV; outperforming commercial Pt/C by a factor of 13.3 and 3.9, respectively. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation results reveal that the charge transfer occur from the N to the neighboring Pt atoms when the hydrogen is adsorbed on N atoms; such a charge redistribution within Pt–N coordination structure leads to a smaller H* free energies on the activated N atoms, and is believed to account for the higher HER activity.

Abstract:Rational control of the components of noble metal alloys is paramount for achieving satisfactory electrocatalytic performances. Though transition metals are commonly used to modify noble metals, many potential elements remain to be explored. Here, we interstitially modulate hydrogen atoms into RhPd nanoparticles to boost the alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The obtained stable RhPd-H nanoparticles exhibit pronounced alkaline HER activity with a small overpotential of 36.6 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and a low Tafel slope of 35.3 mV dec-1. The surface electronic state, bond distance, and coordination number of the Rh and Pd atoms are significantly influenced by the presence of interstitial hydrogen atoms. These modifications give RhPd-H nanoparticles a desirable hydrogen adsorption free energy, thus accelerating the hydrogen gas production. We further demonstrate that the interstitial hydrogen atom modulation strategy to improve the HER activity is universal for other Pd-based alloy nanostructures. This work presents a powerful strategy for designing efficient electrocatalysts for the HER and beyond.

Abstract:Pd is a versatile catalyst in various hydrogen-related catalytic applications; however, it typically exhibits low activity in electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) as too strong Pd-H bonding makes the electronic desorption of H adatoms (Had) hardly occur. We herein report a selective etching-deposition approach to implant trace Pd atoms in the near-surface region of Ag nanocrystals, forming a heteratomic-rich Pd-Ag structure on Ag surface. This near-surface dilution of Pd atoms can dramatically facilitate the electronic desorption of Had. As a result, this approach enhances the electrocatalytic HER activity of Pd catalysts about 14 times with excellent performance durability, approaching the high level of Pt catalysts. While enhancing the catalytic performance, this atomic implantation strategy allows the substantial reduction of material costs. This work thus represents a step toward the high-performance, low-cost catalyst design through near-surface lattice engineering.

Abstract:Tungsten carbide (WC) has received widespread attention as a new type of nonprecious metal catalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, it is still a challenge to improve the surface HER catalytic activity. In this work, the effects of different nonmetallic dopants on the catalytic activity and stabilities of WC (0001) surface for HER were studied by first principles methods. The effects of different types of non-metal (NM = B; N; O; P and S) and doping concentrations (ni = 25–100%) on HER catalytic activity and stability were investigated by calculating the Gibbs free energy of hydrogen adsorption (∆GH) and substitution energy. It was found that the catalytic performance can be improved by doping O and P non-metallic elements. Especially, the ∆GH with P doped is −0.04eV better than Pt (−0.085 eV), which is a potential ideal catalyst for HER. Furthermore, the electronic structure analysis was used to explore the origin of the regulation of doping on stability and catalytic activity. The results show that nonmetallic doping is an effective strategy to control the catalytic activity, which provides theoretical support for the future research of HER catalysts.

Compressive Strain in N‐Doped Palladium/Amorphous‐Cobalt (II) Interface Facilitates Alkaline Hydrogen Evolution

Abstract:The development of palladium-based catalysts for alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is highly desired for renewable hydrogen energy systems, yet still challenging due to the strong palladium–hydrogen bond. Herein, the bottleneck is largely overcome by constructing a nitridation-induced compressively strained-interface N-doped palladium/amorphous cobalt (II) interface (N-Pd/A-Co(II)), which dramatically boosts HER performance in alkaline condition. The optimized catalyst with the compressive strain of 2.7% exhibits the higher activity with an overpotential of only 58 mV to achieve the current density of 10 mA cm−2, much better than those of pure Pd (327 mV), and the state-of-art Pt/C (78 mV). Notably, it also shows excellent stability with negligible decline during a 30 h stability test. Detailed analyses reveal that the strong absorption of Hads on Pd can be efficiently reduced via the compressively strained N-doped Pd. And the amorphous Co(II) component accelerates the water dissociation. Consequently, the cooperative effect between the compressed N-doped Pd and amorphous Co(II) creates the impressive HER performance in alkaline condition, highlighting the importance of the functional interface to develop efficient electrocatalysts for HER and beyond.

Abstract:The hybrid nanostructures of nitrogen doped carbon materials and nonprecious transition metals are among the most promising electrocatalysts to replace noble metal catalysts for renewable energy applications. However, the fundamental principles governing the catalytic activity of such hybrid materials remain elusive. Herein, we systematically explore the electrocatalytic properties of transition metals, transition metal oxides and carbides substrates covered by nitrogen-doped graphitic sheets for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Our first-principles calculations show that the graphitic sheet is prominently activated by the nitrogen doping and the coordinate bond with metal (compound) substrate through intralayer and interlayer charge transfer. Such hybrid materials can provide optimal binding capability for HER catalysis with Tafel barrier down to 1.0 eV. The HER activity can be correlated to the C p z band center, which is in turn governed by the electronic coupling strength between the graphitic sheet and metal substrate, thus paving a way to rational design of graphitic carbon/transition metal hybrid electrocatalysts of high performance.

Abstract:Development of efficient electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reactions (HERs) is necessary to achieve environmentally friendly and sustainable hydrogen production. To reduce cost and to circumvent the scarcity of platinum, the most efficient catalyst for HER, it is essential to develop catalysts using ubiquitous base metals or minimal amounts of precious noble metals. Bis(diimino)metal (MDI) coordination nanosheets are potential HER catalysts because their electric conductivities, two‐dimensionality, and porous structures provide large surface areas and efficient mass and electron transfer. In addition, with sparse metal arrangements in their chemical structures, nanosheets can reduce the amount of metal needed. We synthesized bis(diimino)palladium coordination nanosheets (PdDI) as a coordination polymer composed of bis(diimino)palladium, with semiconducting characteristics, using gas‐liquid interfacial synthesis and electrochemical oxidation. These electrochemically synthesized PdDIs exhibit remarkable catalytic performance with overpotential reaching 10 mA cm−2 of 34 mV, a Tafel slope of 47 mV dec−1, and an exchange current density of 2.1 mA cm−2 after appropriate activation. This performance is closely comparable to that of metallic platinum. An ex‐situ investigation of the activation process revealed that reduction of the divalent Pd center in bis(diimino)palladium produced a composite of Pd(0) species and PdDI, combining high catalytic activity with smooth electron transfer.

Abstract:Designing and synthesizing highly efficient and stable electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is important for realizing hydrogen economy. Tuning the electronic structure of the electrocatalysts is essential to achieve optimal HER activity, and interfacial engineering is an effective strategy to induce electron transfer in a heterostructure interface to optimize HER kinetics. In this study, we synthesized ultrafine RhP2/Rh nanoparticles with a well‐defined semiconductor‐metal heterointerface embedded in N,P co‐doped graphene (RhP2/Rh@NPG) via a one‐step pyrolysis. RhP2/Rh@NPG exhibited outstanding HER performances under all pH conditions. Electrochemical characterization and first principles density functional theory calculations revealed that the RhP2/Rh heterointerface induced electron transfer from metallic Rh to semiconductive RhP2, which increased the electron density on the Rh atoms in RhP2 and weakened the hydrogen adsorption on RhP2, thereby accelerating HER kinetics. Moreover, the interfacial electron transfer activated the dual‐site synergistic effect of Rh and P of RhP2 in neutral and alkaline environments, thereby promoting reorganization of interfacial water molecules for faster HER kinetics. Heterostructured Palladium–Nickel Sulfide on Plasma-Activated Nickel Foil for Robust Hydrogen Evolution

Abstract:Transition-metal sulfides are among the effective electrocatalyst candidates for H2 evolution (HER); however, they still cannot compete with Pt-based electrodes for renewable energy applications. To overcome this issue, grid-matched palladium–nickel sulfides (Pd4S/Ni3S2) are successfully engineered on the holey surface of nickel foil (HNF), which is first treated with a non-thermal plasma (HPNF) generated by a dielectric barrier discharge. The synthesized heterogeneous Pd4S-Ni3S2/HPNF catalyst results in the electron redistribution on the phase interfaces, enhancing the desorption ability of H* species. Consequently, Pd4S-Ni3S2/HPNF presents a high HER activity, and the overpotentials for generating 10 (j 10) and 500 (j 500) mA/cm2 are about 44 and 247 mV. Meanwhile, the catalyst retains good electrocatalytic stability over 50 h at j 100. In addition, the H2 amount of Pd4S-Ni3S2/HPNF driven by the current j 10 can reach 11.25 mmol/h, which is competitive with other presently available high-performance electrocatalysts. The theory and in situ Raman spectroscopy results indicate that Pd4S and the heterointerfaces between the Pd4S and Ni3S2 phases are the main active catalytic sites for H2 evolution and that the Pd weakens the S–Hads bonds, enhancing the reactive kinetics of the Volmer and Heyrovsky steps. This work provides a new and green approach for engineering highly active and stable electrocatalysts for clean hydrogen production.

Abstract:Recently, constructing low-cost, high-efficiency hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts for electrocatalytic water splitting remains a difficult challenge to break the bottleneck. Here we design an excellent interfacial engineering tactics to enhance the HER performance of Pd-based bimetallic phosphide nanoparticles by codoping of transition metal (Fe, Co and Ni) elements on carbon nanofibers (CNF). The optimized PdFeP@CNF possesses the increase active sites and large exchange current density (j0) which exhibits the highest active HER performance with the lowest overpotentials of 13.2, 40.8, 77.6 and 120 mV at current densities of 10, 100, 200 and 400 mA cm-2 in 0.5 M H2SO4 solution, respectively. Moreover, PdFeP@CNF also shows fabulous stability for 100 h with no decrease at the current density. It is found that interfacial-bond-induced electron between Pd and transition metal phosphides can optimize the intrinsic activity then accelerate HER performance. This protocol provides a new approach to fabricate bimetallic phosphide nanoparticles for optimizing its catalytic performance.

Abstract:In deuterium evolution reaction (DER), the strong D-O bond results in suboptimal performance of traditional Pt-based hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts, a rarely addressed issue. As a potential replacement of Pt, Pd is usually less active in DER/HER. Herein, we demonstrate superior activity and stability of Pd nanoparticles effected by controlled metal-support interaction with nitrogen-doped porous carbon (N-PC). The Pd/N-PC catalyst exhibited ultralow overpotentials of 40.6 mV (4.1 mV) and 42.5 mV (15.5 mV) at 10 mA cm −2 in 1 M NaOD (NaOH) and 0.5 M D 2 SO 4 (H 2 SO 4 ), respectively, outperforming commercial Pt/C by up to 11 times in terms of mass-normalized activity. Altered strength of H/D adsorption, large active surface area, and optimized synergistic effects between Pd and nitrogen sites were found responsible for the enhanced activity. This work provides guidance on the development of high-performance Pd-based electrocatalysts and serves as a reference for future study on DER.

Herein, we reported a facile synthesis strategy to homogeneously embed Pd nanoparticles in nitrogen-doped porous carbon fibers (Pd-PCNFs) through three successive processes of pre-oxidation, carbonization, and etching. The porous carbon fiber not only acts as a support matrix for highly dispersed Pd nanoparticles to avoid sintering in the high temperature process, but also provides efficient ion penetration and mass transport during the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) process. More importantly, Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) characterization confirmed the effective synergy between Pd nanoparticles and N-doped porous carbon fibers, which will help enhance the intrinsic electrocatalytic activity of Pd nanoparticles. Consequently, Pd-PCNFs-800 obtained by annealing at 800 °C exhibit significantly enhanced and stable electrocatalytic activity with an onset potential of 0 mV (0.5 M H2SO4) and 40 mV (1 M KOH). It is noteworthy that the catalytic activity of Pd-PCNFs-800 is close to or better than commercial 10% Pd/C in different electrolytes. Impressively, in alkaline media, the activity of Pd-PCNFs-800 is even superior to commercial Pt/C at large current densities (>48.6 mA cm−2). This work provides a novel perspective to design and enrich the applications of Pd-based catalysts supported on carbon substrates.

Double loading of nickel phosphide surface for efficient hydrogen evolution reaction

Abstract:Metal phosphide, as a highly conductive, chemically stable catalyst material, modulating its hydrogen adsorption is crucial to enhance hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity. In this study, we propose a double loading strategy to build Ag and AgP2 heterogeneous structures on Ni2P nanosheets (Ag-AgP2/Ni2P). This is the first application of AgP2 materials in HER. This innovative synthesis was achieved by liquid-phase adsorption of precursors and heat-treatment phosphorization, surface adsorbed AgNO3 is converted to Ag-AgP2 double loading at the same time as Ni2P formation. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the double loading structure optimizes charge distribution and d-band center. Its hydrogen adsorption free energy is closer to electroneutrality than that of single loading and simple heterostructures. Benefiting from the special structure, Ag-AgP2/Ni2P exhibits excellent HER performance in alkaline media, requiring only 78 mV overpotential to reach 10 mA cm-2 and stability up to 200 h. This dual loading strategy broadens the perspective of heterogeneous electrocatalyst development.

Abstract:Designing highly active catalysts at an atomic scale is required to drive the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Copper-platinum (Cu-Pt) dual sites were alloyed with palladium nanorings (Pd NRs) containing 1.5 atom % Pt, using atomically dispersed Cu on ultrathin Pd NRs as seeds. The ultrafine structure of atomically dispersed Cu-Pt dual sites was confirmed with X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) measurements. The Pd/Cu-Pt NRs exhibit excellent HER properties in acidic solution with an overpotential of only 22.8 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 and a high mass current density of 3002 A g-1(Pd+Pt) at a -0.05 V potential.

Abstract:Nobel metal catalysts with high-index facets feature a high density of steps and kink sites, which bring about high activity but could be unstable during the electrocatalytic process. Doping with interstitial hydrogen atoms is a unique and effective way to regulate the electronic structure of the host materials. The formation of hydride also helps to stabilize the active sites on the surface of catalysts. Herein, we demonstrate the conformal doping of H atoms into the Pd nanostructure with preferential exposure of {730} facets, forming concave nanocubes of palladium hydride. Compared to the palladium counterparts, the palladium hydride catalysts show enhanced activity and stability in electrocatalytic methanol oxidation, and the structural differences between the Pd and PdH catalysts are revealed by XRD and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Our work presents a powerful strategy for designing durable catalysts with high performance by combining high-index facet with interstitial atom doping.
Oxygen Vacancy Engineering Synergistic with Surface Hydrophilicity Modification of Hollow Ru Doped CoNi‐LDH Nanotube Arrays for Boosting Hydrogen Evolution

Abstract:With the development of clean hydrogen energy, the cost effective and high-performance hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts are urgently required. Herein, a green, facile, and time-efficient Ru doping synergistic with air-plasma treatment strategy is reported to boost the HER performance of CoNi-layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanotube arrays (NTAs) derived from zeolitic imidazolate framework nanorods. The Ru doping and air-plasma treatment not only regulate the oxygen vacancy to optimize the electron structure but also increase the surface roughness to improve the hydrophilicity and hydrogen spillover efficiency. Therefore, the air plasma treated Ru doped CoNi-LDH (P-Ru-CoNi-LDH) nanotube arrays display superior HER performance with an overpotential of 29 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm<sup>-2</sup> . Furthermore, by assembling P-Ru-CoNi-LDH as both cathode and anode for two-electrode urea-assisted water electrolysis, a small cell voltage of 1.36 V is needed at 10 mA cm<sup>-2</sup> and can last for 100 h without any obvious activity attenuation that showing outstanding durability. In general, the P-Ru-CoNi-LDH can improve the HER performance from intrinsic electronic structure regulation cooperated with extrinsic surface wettability modification. These findings provide an effective intrinsic and extrinsic synergistic effect avenue to develop high performance HER electrocatalysts, which is potential to be applied to other research fields.
