Abstract:Problem: Reflection is important for lifelong learning and professional development, and discussion forums have been highlighted as a potential platform for enhancing reflection further through peer interaction and teacher feedback. Forums provide students on general practice (GP) placement the opportunity to engage in collaborative reflective learning despite their geographical isolation and disparate schedules. This case report seeks to explore whether online discussion forums demonstrate community presence and reflective learning among medical students on GP placement. Intervention: Online discussion forums were introduced into the curriculum for University of Auckland Year 5 and 6 medical students on their respective 4- and 6-week GP placement. Via asynchronous posts and comments, groups of eight students on average presented cases and experiences for discussion with peers and an overseeing GP faculty member. Context: Students were dispersed across a large geographical area and were unlikely to have peer contact in their assigned practices. Online discussion forums were implemented for a number of reasons, including facilitating reflective learning. An adapted community of inquiry framework was used to investigate the cognitive, social, and teacher presence elements visible in the discussion forum transcripts of unanimously consenting groups. Content analysis of the transcripts was performed to evaluate the presence and quality of reflective learning. Impact: The forums were predominately student-led with relatively scarce comments by GP faculty facilitators. The majority of cases and experiences presented related to clinical management of patients and dissonance triggered by the on-site supervisor's actions. Ideas, knowledge, and understanding of presented encounters were shared and built on by positive and supportive interaction, broadening students' perspectives and, at times, leading to the formation of solutions. However, students' reflection was mostly superficial. Deep reflection was rarely present, and affective dimensions of reflection were disclosed relatively less than clinical cognitive aspects of reflection. Direct instruction, based on prior experience and pedagogical expertise, was the main form of comment made by faculty facilitators, who prompted with questions to a far lesser extent. Lessons Learned: Online discussion forums appeared to enable medical students on GP placement to interact positively with peers and faculty facilitators. However, deep reflection was not reached. Modifying the discussion forums to facilitate more peer interaction and addressing the barriers that limit faculty facilitation may encourage deeper and more affective reflections.
A Resident Narrative Medicine Curriculum to Promote Professional Identity Development: Story-Based Sessions Grounded in Narrative Learning Theory

Abstract:Introduction: Empathy, reflection, and social connectedness are important skills for physician identity development and are increasingly challenged by burnout. Humanities-based interventions like narrative medicine (NM) are emerging in medical education to promote these skills. Only 17% of such initiatives target graduate medical learners. Furthermore, interventions are inconsistent in approach and theory representation. NM uses story-based learning to promote reflection and group discussion. Inspired by narrative learning theory, we developed NM sessions for residents to foster healthy identity development. Methods: Ninety-minute sessions were integrated into curricula for PGY 1-PGY 3 internal medicine-primary care residents at two large academic centers. Sessions involved engagement with a narrative source (stories, poems, art), personal reflection, and group discussion. Topics ranged from burnout to difficult patients. Participants completed anonymous postsession surveys assessing satisfaction, attitudes, and skills. Results: Fifteen sessions occurred from 2021 to 2023, with three to 10 residents per session. Fifty residents completed between one and four sessions, with 68 survey responses (response rate: 88%). Over 95% ranked 4-5 out of 5 for overall impression (n = 67) and personal value (n = 65) of sessions. Sessions were highly enjoyable (M = 4.8), with mean scores of >4 out of 5 for impact on wellness, appreciation of work values, social connectedness, and patient care. Discussion: NM sessions demonstrated measurable improvements in several domains of professional performance including wellness, job satisfaction, and patient care, while promoting camaraderie and emotion processing. Our materials offer tremendous potential for promoting healthy identity formation.
How does narrative medicine impact medical trainees' learning of professionalism? A qualitative study

Abstract:Background: Narrative medicine (NM) is an approach involving narrative skills and is regarded as a model for medical humanism and effective medical practice. This study aims to explore how NM impacts medical trainees' learning of professionalism during a clerkship in a Taiwanese clinical setting. Methods: A qualitative interview study adopting a purposive sampling method was undertaken. Thirty medical trainees participated in this study, including five fifth-year medical students (MSs), ten sixth-year MSs, nine seventh-year MSs, and six postgraduate year (PGY) trainees. Thematic framework analysis was applied, and a modified realist evaluation approach was further used to analyse the interview data. Results: We identified self-exploration, reflection, and awareness of professional identity as mechanisms explaining how NM impacted professionalism learning in our participants. Furthermore, empathy, communication, doctor-patient relationship and understanding patients were identified as the outcomes of the NM intervention for trainees' learning of professionalism. Conclusions: NM facilitates medical trainees' self-exploration, reflection, and awareness of professional identity, thereby affecting their learning of professionalism in clinical settings. Adopting NM as an educational intervention in undergraduate medical education could play an important role in professionalism learning, as trainees can thereby be supported to gradually develop self-exploration and reflection capabilities and heightened awareness of professional identity reflectively through a narrative process.
Storytelling in Medical Education: Narrative Medicine as a Resource for Interdisciplinary Collaboration

Abstract:Objective: The study intended to use narrative medicine study for interdisciplinary collaboration to let medical and healthcare students have a chance to interact with one another and listen to patients’ stories to enhance students’ reflective thinking, communication, empathy, and narrative medicine writing skills. Methods: A fifteen-week quasi-experimental design was used to examine the learning outcomes of the intervention. Two groups of students were randomly assigned as the experimental group (33 students) and the control group (32 students). Before and after the intervention, both groups had to fill in a Reflective Thinking Scale for Healthcare Students and Providers (RTS-HSP), Patient–Healthcare Provider Communication Scale (P-HCS), Empathy Scale in Patient Care (ES-PC), and Analytic Narrative Medicine Writing Scoring Rubric (ANMWSR). Results: The findings showed that on the reflective thinking scale, experimental group students had significantly higher reflective thinking posttest scores in “reflective skepticism,” “empathetic reflection,” and “critical open-mindedness,” but not in “self-examination.” As for patient–healthcare provider communication, they had significantly higher posttest scores in all “perception of trust and receptivity,” “patient-centered information giving,” “rapport building,” and “facilitation of patient involvement” factors. As for empathy, they had significant higher posttest scores in “behavioral empathy” and “affective empathy,” but not in “intelligent empathy.” In narrative medical writing skills, they had significant higher posttest scores in the “attention → representation → affiliation,” “depth of reflection,” “focus and context structure,” and “ideas and elaboration” sections, but not in the “language and conventions” section. Conclusion: The findings suggest that narrative medicine is worth recommending for interdisciplinary collaboration for healthcare education.

Storied reflections: Development of a longitudinal interdisciplinary curriculum to improve patient-provider communication

Abstract:Objective: This article details the development of an interdisciplinary graduate medical education (GME) narrative curriculum. Methods: Descriptive statistics were conducted for the narrative session surveys. Two separate qualitative analyses were conducted. First, content and thematic analyses of the open-ended questions in the survey using NVIVO software occurred. Second, an inductive analysis of the participants' 54 stories was performed to identify unique themes not related to the prompt topics. Results: Quantitative survey results demonstrated that 84% of learners' felt the session benefited their personal or professional sense of wellbeing and resilience, 90% of learners believed the sessions aided in their ability to listen more effectively, and 86% of learners could apply what they practiced or witnessed. Qualitative analysis of survey data showed learners focused on patient care and listening. Thematic analysis of participants' narratives revealed strong feelings and emotions, struggles with time management, increase in self- and other-awareness, and challenges managing job-life balance. Conclusion: The longitudinal interdisciplinary Write-Read-Reflect narrative exchange curriculum is cost-effective, sustainable, and demonstrably valuable to learners and their program directors across multiple disciplines. Innovation: The program was designed for 4 graduate programs' learners to simultaneously experience a narrative exchange model to improve patient-provider communication, support professional resilience, and deepen relationship-centered care skills.
Taking the next step: How student reflective essays about difficult clinical encounters demonstrate professional identity formation

Abstract:Background: Difficult clinical encounters pose emotional and behavioural challenges for medical students. Unless resolved, they threaten students' professional competence and well-being. Learning how to humanistically interact with patients perceived as "difficult" is an important component of the developmental process that underlies professional identity formation (PIF). Methods: This study used thematic analysis to examine reflective essay data from the same set of students (N = 69), first in their third year and then in their fourth year of training at a US public medical school. Analysis focused on how student perceptions of patients', preceptors', and their own behaviour, attitudes, and emotions in difficult patient care situations evolved over time, and how such evolution contributed to their professional growth. Findings: Students identified clinical predicaments influenced by their own emotions and behaviour, as well as those of patients and preceptors. In response to patients perceived as angry, rude, and uncooperative, students described themselves and their preceptors primarily as engaging in routine medical behaviours, followed by expressions of empathy. These encounters resulted in residual emotions as well as lessons learned. Fourth-year students reported more empathy, patient-centeredness, and patient ownership than third-year students. While student-physicians grew in professionalism and compassion, they also noted unresolved distressing emotions post-encounter. Conclusions: From third to fourth year, medical students undergo a process of professional growth that can be documented at a granular level through their perceptions of themselves, their patients, and their preceptors. Despite positive professional growth, students' lingering negative affect merits attention and support from clinical teachers.

Abstract:Few studies have been performed to evaluate the ultrastructural changes that exposure to static magnetic fields (SMF) can cause to the processes of cell migration and differentiation in the cerebellum during development. Thus, we have studied the development of the cerebellum in the chick embryo (n = 144) under a uniform SMF (20 mT). All of our observations were done on folium VIc of Larsell's classification. The cerebella of chick embryos, which were exposed solely on day 6 of incubation and sacrificed at day 13 of incubation [short exposure (S)1; n = 24], showed an external granular layer (EGL) that was less dense than the EGL in the control group (n = 24). The molecular layer (ML) exhibited a low number of migratory neuroblastic elements. Moreover, the internal granular layer (IGL) was immature, with the cellular elements less abundant and more dispersed than in controls. In chick embryos exposed on day 6 of incubation and sacrificed at day 17 (S2; n = 24), the outstanding feature was the regeneration of the different layers of the cerebellar cortex. The cerebellar cortex of chick embryos exposed continuously to an identical field from the beginning of the incubation up to day 13 [long exposure (L)1; n = 24] or day 17 (L2; n = 24) of incubation showed a higher number of alterations than that of group S1. Electron microscopy confirmed the findings from light microscopy and, at the same time, showed clear signs of cell degeneration and delay in the process of neuronal differentiation. This was more apparent in groups L1 (100%) and L2 (100%) than in groups S1 (95.4%) and S2 (65.2%). In conclusion, the present study showed that SMF can induce irreversible developmental effects on the processes of cell migration and differentiation of the chick cerebellar cortex.
[Identification of proliferating cells in Taenia solium cysts].

Abstract:Neoblasts are totipotent cells, solely responsible for the proliferation and maturation of tissues in free-living flatworms. Similar cells have been isolated from parasitic flatworms such as Echinococcus. Taenia solium causes human taeniasis (intestinal) and cysticercosis in humans and pigs. Brain infection with larvae (cysts) of T. solium results in neurocysticercosis which is hyperendemic in Peru, and its treatment is associated with serious neurological symptoms. The proliferative capacity and development stages of T. solium have not been described and the neoblasts of this parasite have not been characterized We looked for cell proliferation in T. solium cysts collected from an infected pig, which were identified when replicating and incorporating bromodeoxyuridine nucleotide detected with a monoclonal antibody. A stable cell line of neoblasts would be useful for systematic in vitro studies on drug efficacy and the biology of T. solium.
Narrative medicine and humanities for health professions education: an experimental study

Abstract:Narrative medicine can serve as a tool to empathize with human beings' predicament and suffering. The research intended to examine whether the use of narrative medicine to form an empathetic connection could bring any positive impacts on health professions students. A two-group quasi-experimental design was adopted to examine whether the intervention of narrative medicine to form an empathetic connection could demonstrate differences between the experimental group (35 students) and the control group (32 students) with regard to professional identity, self-reflection, emotional catharsis, and reflective writing competency. These 67 participants were health professions students in a medical university (mean age = 20.02; SD = 0.23), with varied majors in health disciplines. The 16-week intervention was the use of narrative medicine to form an empathetic connection with those suffering, via the three stages of narrative medicine: attention → representation → affiliation. The quantitative instruments included a professional identity scale (PIS-HSP), a reflective thinking scale (RTS-HSP), and an emotional catharsis scale (ECS-IN), as well as an analytic reflective writing scoring rubric (ARWSR-HSP). To triangulate the quantitative results, the study also used the student interviews. The SPSS software was used to analyze the data. The quantitative results demonstrated that the narrative medicine-based intervention could bring positive effects on the health professions students. After going through the intervention, the students in the experimental group had stronger professional identity, a higher reflective thinking level, more emotional catharsis, and greater improvement in reflective writing competency than those not receiving the intervention, though some subscales not reaching statistical significance. This research results proved that the use of narrative medicine to form an empathetic connection could bring positive impacts on health professions students regarding professional identity, self-reflection, emotional catharsis, and self-reflective writing competency.

Validation of Medical Tourism Service Quality Questionnaire (MTSQQ) for Iranian Hospitals

Abstract:Introduction Assessing service quality is one of the basic requirements to develop the medical tourism industry. There is no valid and reliable tool to measure service quality of medical tourism. This study aimed to determine the reliability and validity of a Persian version of medical tourism service quality questionnaire for Iranian hospitals. Methods To validate the medical tourism service quality questionnaire (MTSQQ), a cross-sectional study was conducted on 250 Iraqi patients referred to hospitals in Ahvaz (Iran) from 2015. To design a questionnaire and determine its content validity, the Delphi Technique (3 rounds) with the participation of 20 medical tourism experts was used. Construct validity of the questionnaire was assessed through exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. Reliability was assessed using Cronbach’s alpha coefficient. Data were analyzed by Excel 2007, SPSS version18, and Lisrel l8.0 software. Results The content validity of the questionnaire with CVI=0.775 was confirmed. According to exploratory factor analysis, the MTSQQ included 31 items and 8 dimensions (tangibility, reliability, responsiveness, assurance, empathy, exchange and travel facilities, technical and infrastructure facilities and safety and security). Construct validity of the questionnaire was confirmed, based on the goodness of fit quantities of model (RMSEA=0.032, CFI= 0.98, GFI=0.88). Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was 0.837 and 0.919 for expectation and perception questionnaire. Conclusion The results of the study showed that the medical tourism SERVQUAL questionnaire with 31 items and 8 dimensions was a valid and reliable tool to measure service quality of medical tourism in Iranian hospitals.
Reflecting on professional identity in undergraduate medical education: implementation of a novel longitudinal course

Abstract:Abstract Background Today’s healthcare professionals face numerous challenges. Improving reflection skills has the potential to contribute to the better management of complex patients and healthcare systems, as well as to improve professional practice. However, the question of how reflection skills can inform professional identity development at the undergraduate medical education level remains unanswered. Approach The authors developed and implemented a 4-year course that aims to engage students in a reflective process to increase their awareness of their professional identity development. The course is structured around three types of pedagogical activities: workshops, reflections deposited in an electronic portfolio, and individual discussions with mentors. Evaluation Sixty-four 1st year students (33%) and 17 mentors (50%) from the 2017–2018 cohort completed evaluation questionnaires. For the 2018–2019 academic year, 73 1st year students (34%) and 27 2nd year students (14%), as well as 20 1st year (59%) and 19 2nd year mentors (57%) replied. Students and mentors considered that the pedagogical activities contributed to the development of students’ professional identity through the acquisition of reflection skills, but some elements were perceived as challenging, notably, completing the portfolio, finding a subject to reflect about and the timing of the proposed activities. Reflection An important preoccupation when wanting to foster the development of professional identity through the acquisition of reflection skills is the authenticity of students’ reflection. We tried to favor authentic reflection, by having a mentee-mentor pair throughout the entire 4‐year course. A rigorous evaluation process helped us identify and promptly correct issues as they surfaced.

Abstract:The taxometric procedures developed by Paul Meehl and his colleagues have been used in a large body of research seeking to distinguish between categorical and continuous models of latent variables. In this article the authors survey taxometric studies of psychopathological, personality, and other variables and draw conclusions about the taxonicity of latent variables in these domains. In addition, the authors review research on the validation and refinement of taxometric methods and make proposals for improving the application of taxometric research. The authors consider questions that remain about the conceptual status of taxometrics and raise new ones. They show that taxometric methodology has made an accelerating number of contributions to psychological research, has resolved several longstanding controversies, and has challenged some entrenched theoretical assumptions in differential psychology. Moreover, they contend that the research possibilities that it affords have yet to be fully exploited.
A Novel Narrative Medicine Approach to DEI Training for Medical School Faculty

Abstract:Problem:Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) trainings for medical school faculty often lack self-reflective and pedagogically focused components that may promote incorporation of anti-racism and social justice into medical school curricula. Intervention: A four-session Narrative Medicine (NM) anti-racism program was designed for medical school faculty using critical race theory, phenomenology, and NM methods. Each workshop consisted of a lecture on key NM concepts and a small-group breakout session incorporating group discussion, close reading, and reflective writing. Context: This NM anti-racism program was developed and implemented in April 2021 by two medical students for faculty at an institution in the southeastern U.S. The program was supported by the Office of Inclusive Excellence at the institution and held in collaboration with the institution's medical education teaching academy. Program evaluation consisted of pre- and post-program surveys, which queried participants' previous experiences with DEI and medical humanities programs, perceptions of self-identity and privilege, and confidence in teaching concepts of anti-racism. Of the total program participants (n = 32), 19 completed both surveys (54.3%). Survey data were analyzed using bivariate testing methods and qualitative thematic analysis. Impact: Post-program surveys showed 13 (68.4%) participants felt "somewhat more" or "more" comfortable engaging in concepts of race, and 12 (63.2%) participants felt "somewhat more" or "more" comfortable including topics of race into their teaching compared to before the program. Five themes were generated following qualitative analysis: (1) the value of longitudinal narrative reflection in a small-group setting for DEI work; (2) desire to commit more time to DEI, anti-racist, and social justice work while balancing busy teaching and clinical schedules; (3) the value of storytelling in DEI and anti-racism programming; (4) an understanding of deconstructive and reconstructive work of anti-racism in medicine; and (5) an increased ability to educate and enact change through teaching, activism, and institutional cultural and policy changes. Lessons Learned: This novel NM DEI training for medical school faculty was successful in increasing comfort discussing and teaching concepts of race in the medical school classroom, while providing a uniquely reflective space for personal growth. Participation in this longitudinal reflective experience was limited by physician schedules, therefore efforts to make time to participate in similar longitudinal interventions must be undertaken.

Abstract:A 7-session narrative medicine (NM) curriculum was designed and facilitated by pediatrics residents for pediatrics residents in order to unpack challenging experiences during clinical training and strengthen relationships with colleagues and patients. The primary facilitator, a resident with a master's degree in NM, provided facilitator training to her co-residents with whom she co-led the workshops in the curriculum. We conducted, transcribed, and analyzed individual interviews of 15 residents, with three resultant themes: reflection on personal and professional identity; connection to others and community building; and reconceptualization of medical practice. Residents shared that they experienced greater solidarity, professional fulfillment, appreciation for multiple facets of their identities, recognition of holding space for vulnerability, and advocacy for marginalized populations. Our study highlights the feasibility and effectiveness of peer-led NM workshops to enhance clinical training through self-reflection, inclusion of persons from underrecognized backgrounds, and promotion of values consistent with humanistic care.

Abstract:e21015 Background: Narrative Competence is the ability to acquire, interpret and act on the stories of others.[1] Developing this skill can also improve health care practitioner’s sense of empathy and satisfaction with their work.[2] This study’s purpose is to evaluate the impact of a narrative medicine curriculum on medical students’ sense of connection to their patients and humanism in medicine. Methods: During the 2023 academic year, a narrative medicine assignment was introduced to the internal medicine oncology clerkship curriculum at the Yale School of Medicine. Third year medical students attended a training session on narrative medicine skills, interviewed a patient and wrote the patient’s story, and attended a session to read their written narrative. A survey was distributed to students asking for their reflections on the doctor patient relationship and the role of humanism in improving well-being and reducing burn out. Responses were de-identified and thematic analysis of responses was conducted. Results: 58 students participated in the training sessions and 11 (19%) completed a post-workshop free text survey with 5 questions reflecting on the doctor-patient relationship, the role of humanism in medicine, and the curriculum itself. Common themes that emerged include 1) how strong doctor-patient relationships makes medicine more meaningful, uplifting and enjoyable, 2) how seeking out a patient’s story is essential to the doctor-patient relationship and to optimal quality care, and 3) importance of doctor’s exhibiting care and sensitivity and placing diseases in context of their patients’ stories. Reflecting on the role of humanism in medicine, students reported that 1) taking the time to know your patients makes medicine rewarding, meaningful and worthwhile, 2) allows you to empathize and connect with patients more through recognizing their humanity and vulnerability and putting their frustrations in context, and 3) could be healing to both patient and provider. Further directions: Students suggested making the program mandatory, expanding to include pre-clerkship students and students on other clerkships, and providing more time and structure to facilitate interviewing patients and writing up their stories. Abstract:Guided reflective narratives facilitate deeper understanding and learning. The study was aimed at exploring the scope of guided reflective narratives on early clinical exposure, for first-year medical students, in promoting empathy. Strengths and limitations of the process of reflective narratives were also explored. First-year medical students (n = 150) were exposed to guided reflective narrative writing following each of the three "early clinical exposure" sessions integrated into a physiology curriculum. A feedback on the entire program was obtained through a semistructured questionnaire. The contents of the reflective narratives and feedback on the program were analyzed. Students empathized with the situation and needs of patients and caregivers and could relate to responsibilities and challenges faced by members of health care team. They realized the importance of cooperation from patients and caregivers and work efficiency, communication, behavior, and teamwork from members of healthcare and thereby emerged with the idea of the coordinated effort in patient care. Students opined that reflective narratives made them reflect and empathize with people and situations. Too many narrative writing sessions and hesitation to share their thoughts were some of the suggested limitations. The process led to emergence of a working model for guided reflections to promote empathy. Guided reflective narratives made students reflect and relate to people and situations. While promoting empathy, the reflections also gave them an idea of holistic approach to patient-centered care. Inferences led to a conceptual model for guided reflections to promote empathy among medical students.

Abstract:There are many ways that students and trainees learn to talk about patients. The way trainees and physicians use language during clinical care is important, as labeling patients can have adverse effects on patient safety. Communication is considered a core competency by The Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Past research has shown that participants in narrative medicine curricula report developing stronger communication skills however it is not clear how these workshops motivated trainees to use language differently during patient care. To explore this, we interviewed second-year residents in academic year 19–20 about their experiences both in participating in narrative medicine workshops and giving patient care.

Abstract:Medical students' efforts to learn person-centered thinking and behavior can fall short due to the dissonance between person-centered clinical ideals and the prevailing epistemological stereotypes of medicine, where physicians' life events, relations, and emotions seem irrelevant to their professional competence. This paper explores how reflecting on personal life experiences and considering the relevance for one's future professional practice can inform first-year medical students' initial explorations of professional identities. In this narrative inquiry, we undertook a dialogical narrative analysis of 68 essays in which first-year medical students reflected on how personal experiences from before medical school may influence them as future doctors. Students wrote the texts at the end of a 6-month course involving 20 patient encounters, introduction to person-centered theory, peer group discussions, and reflective writing. The analysis targeted medical students' processes of interweaving and delineating personal and professional identities. The analysis yielded four categories. (1) How medical students told their stories of illness, suffering, and relational struggles in an interplay with context that provided them with new perspectives on their own experiences. Students formed identities with a person-centered orientation to medical work by: (2) recognizing and identifying with patients' vulnerability, (3) experiencing the healing function of sharing stories, and (4) transforming personal experiences into professional strength. Innovative approaches to medical education that encourage and support medical students to revisit, reflect on, and reinterpret their emotionally charged life experiences have the potential to shape professional identities in ways that support person-centered orientations to medical work.

Abstract:Introduction A teacher’s professional identity development is a dynamic and continuous process that requires rigorous, longitudinal, faculty development initiatives which are designed to work on individual professional growth. Impact of such programs must be evaluated by qualitative means to identify the process of change; The purpose of our study was to investigate whether and how our thoughtfully designed 6-month certificate program has transformed the professional identity of medical teachers. Methods The study was conducted in National University of Medical Sciences, Pakistan using thematic analysis, wherein a weekly task of guided reflective writing, on Moodle, was given. Data was analyzed in six phases to achieve credibility and transferability. Results By analyzing 202 reflective writings, seven subthemes were identified which manifest transformation in certain aspects of identity of participants and grouped under three major themes. The seven subthemes represent transformative journey of participants and include recognizing millennial learners’ dilemma, identifying learning gaps and overcoming barriers, discovering a newer version of self, alternative frame of thinking, transforming traditional classroom, conducive learning environment and Community of Practice. Three major themes identified were Awareness, Modeling and Socialization which represent three processes bringing transformation in participants. Conclusion Our faculty development program has transformed certain aspects of professional identities of medical teachers by incorporating informal teaching strategies of experiential learning, professional socialization, reflections, and role modeling. Participants’ beliefs and practices on teaching were challenged by giving a disorienting dilemma of millennial learners and learning theories. They underwent critical discourse with professional peers and mentors in community of practice, reflected on their traditional teaching practices, acquired new insight, underwent self-discovery, and introduced digitalization and interactive learning strategies within their classrooms.

The role of arts-based curricula in professional identity formation: results of a qualitative analysis of learner's written reflections

Abstract:Background: Professional identity formation is an important aspect of medical education that can be difficult to translate into formal curricula. The role of arts and humanities programs in fostering professional identity formation remains understudied. Analyzing learners' written reflections, we explore the relationship between an arts-based course and themes of professional identity formation. Materials and methods: Two cohorts of learners participated in a 5-day online course featuring visual arts-based group activities. Both cohorts responded to a prompt with written reflections at the beginning and end of the course. Using a thematic analysis method, we qualitatively analyzed one set of reflections from each cohort. Results: Themes included the nature of the good life; fulfilling, purposeful work; entering the physician role; exploration of emotional experience; and personal growth. Reflections written at the end of the course engaged significantly with art - including literature, poetry, lyrics, and film. One student disclosed a mental illness in their reflection. Conclusions: Our qualitative analysis of reflections written during a visual arts-based course found several themes related to professional identity formation. Such arts-based courses can also enrich learners' reflections and provide a space for learners to be vulnerable.
