Abstract:Installation and maintenance of stormwater ponds to detain and treat runoff from impervious surfaces is a common method of stormwater control in developed areas. That these ponds capture pollutants, however, is of concern for wildlife species that use the ponds, particularly pond-breeding amphibians. To assess the relative contribution of stormwater ponds to the persistence of amphibian populations in suburban landscapes, we compared amphibian use of stormwater ponds and other available wetlands in suburban and forested watersheds. We surveyed three suburban and three primarily forested first-order watersheds to identify all potential wetlands that might serve as breeding sites for pond-breeding amphibians. We performed call, egg-mass, and larval surveys to measure breeding effort at each wetland in spring and summer 2007 and 2008. In suburban watersheds most (89%) of the wetlands that had breeding activity were either stormwater ponds or otherwise artificial. This pattern was also evident in the forested watersheds, where amphibians were primarily found breeding in wetlands created by past human activity. Late-stage larvae were found only in anthropogenic wetlands in all study areas because the remaining natural wetlands did not hold water long enough for larvae to complete development. Our results suggest that in urban and suburban landscapes with naturally low densities of wetlands, wetlands created by current or historic land uses may be as important to amphibian conservation as natural wetlands or pools and that management strategies directed at urban and suburban landscapes should recognize and incorporate human-created wetlands.
The Effects of Ditch Management in Agroecosystems on Embryonic and Tadpole Survival, Growth, and Development of Northern Leopard Frogs (Lithobates pipiens)

Abstract:Agricultural drainage ditches help remove excess water from fields and provide habitat for wildlife. Drainage ditch management, which includes various forms of vegetation clearing and sediment dredging, can variably affect the ecological function of these systems. To determine whether ditch conditions following dredging/vegetation clearing management affected the survival, growth, and development of embryos and tadpoles of northern leopard frogs (Lithobates pipiens), we conducted three field studies using in situ cages over 2 years. We measured nutrients, pesticides, and other water quality properties in vegetated/unmanaged (i.e., no clearing or dredging) and newly cleared/dredged (i.e., treeless, then dredged), clay-bottomed drainage ditches in a river basin in Eastern Ontario, Canada. Nutrients, atrazine, and total neonicotinoid concentrations were generally lower at the cleared/dredged sites, whereas glyphosate was at higher concentrations. In contrast, water-quality variables measured in situ, particularly temperature, dissolved oxygen, and turbidity, tended to be higher in the cleared/dredged sites. Total phosphorous and total organic carbon concentrations at all sites were above the recommended limits for amphibian assays. No significant differences were detected in the survival, hatching success, or development of embryos among the ditch management treatments, but premature hatching was observed at one vegetated/unmanaged site where high specific conductivity may have been formative. We found the cleared/dredged sites supported earlier tadpole growth and development, likely as a result of the higher water temperatures. Increased temperature may have offset other growth/development stressors, such as those related to water chemistry. However, the long-term consequences of these differences on amphibian populations requires further study.
Effects of Agricultural Stressors on Growth and an Immune Status Indicator in Wood Frog (Lithobates sylvaticus) Tadpoles and Metamorphs

Abstract:Like many amphibians, wood frog (Lithobates sylvaticus) populations have likely declined or experienced local extirpations as a result of habitat alterations. Despite this, wood frogs are still present and breeding in altered landscapes, like the agricultural Prairie Pothole Region of central Canada, and are exposed to a variety of anthropogenic impacts. As tadpoles, water contamination can have negative effects on growth, development, and immune systems. To investigate the potential effects of agricultural land use on tadpole growth and immune system stress, we used boosted regression trees to model body mass, body condition, and neutrophil to lymphocyte ratios, a measure of immune stress, against 32 variables including water quality, wetland habitat, and landscape-level measures. Developmental stage strongly influenced all 3 endpoints, and body mass was negatively influenced by higher levels of total dissolved solids (>600-700 mg/L) and at the first sign of pesticide detection (>0.01 proportion pesticides detected of those screened). While correlative, these data suggest that tadpoles developing in agricultural environments may experience survival and reproductive disadvantages if they metamorphose at smaller body sizes. Given the potential impacts this can have on adult frogs and frog populations, these results provide an impetus for further field-based investigation into the effects that pesticides, and especially total dissolved solids, may have on tadpoles. Where Land and Water Meet: Making Amphibian Breeding Sites Attractive for Amphibians

Abstract:The protection of wetlands is a cornerstone in the conservation of pond-breeding amphibians. Because protected wetlands are rarely natural areas, but are often man-made, at least in Europe, it is important that they are well managed to fulfill their intended function. Appropriate management requires knowledge of the ecology of the species, particularly habitat requirements. Here, we combine species monitoring data and habitat mapping data in an analysis where our goal was to describe the factors that determine the occupancy of amphibian species in federally protected amphibian breeding sites. As expected, every species had its own habitat requirements, often a combination of both a terrestrial and aquatic habitat (i.e., landscape complementation). In most species, occupancy was strongly positively affected with the amount of aquatic habitat, but predicted occupancy probabilities were low because the amount of aquatic habitat was low in most sites. The area or proportion of ruderal vegetation also had positive effects on multiple species, while other types of terrestrial habitat (e.g., meadows) led to low occupancy probabilities. The total area of the protected breeding sites was never included in a final model and connectivity was important only for one species (Triturus cristatus). The latter finding implies that the quality of the landscape between breeding sizes is more important than distance per se, while the former implies that the area of some specific habitats within breeding sites is crucial for high occupancies. Thus, increasing the amount of aquatic habitats and likewise terrestrial habitats within protected areas would make them more likely to achieve their conservation objectives. Our study is an example of how the joint analysis of monitoring data and habitat data (based on mapping in the field) can lead to evidence-based suggestions on how to improve conservation practice.
Are wetland regulations cost effective for species protection? A case study of amphibian metapopulations

Abstract:Recent declines in amphibian populations have raised concern among conservation biologists, with habitat loss and degradation due to human activities among the leading causes. The most common policies used to protect the habitat of pond-breeding amphibians are wetland regulations that safeguard the wetland itself. However, many amphibians spend much of their adult lives foraging and over-wintering in upland habitats and exist as metapopulations with dispersal among ponds. With no consideration of lands in the dispersal matrix, wetland policies may be ineffective at protecting amphibians or other wetland species that disperse across the landscape. This paper examined the adequacy and cost effectiveness of alternative conservation policies and their corresponding land use patterns on the long-term persistence of pond-breeding amphibians in exurban landscapes. We used computer simulations to compare outcomes of wetland buffer policies and broader landscape-wide conservation policies across a variety of landscape scenarios, and we conducted sensitivity analyses on the model's species parameters in order to generalize our results to other wetland species. Results showed that, in the majority of human-dominated landscapes, some amount of dispersal matrix protection is necessary for long-term species persistence. However, in landscapes with extremely low-intensity land use (e.g., low-density residential housing) and high pond density, wetland buffer policies may be all that is required. It is not always more cost effective to protect core habitat over the dispersal matrix, a common conservation practice. Conservation costs that result from forgone residential, commercial, or agricultural activities can vary substantially but increase in a nonlinear manner regardless of land use zoning. There appears to be a threshold around an average habitat patch occupancy level of 80%, after which opportunity costs rise dramatically.

Abstract:Abstract Predictions about population and community dynamics are usually based on lab experiments. Because the results are difficult to transfer to natural conditions, the major purpose of this study was to test the effects of biotic and abiotic factors on tadpole populations in a natural environment. We stocked six ponds, created the previous year, with known numbers of Rana esculenta and R. lessonae tadpoles and followed their development over several months. When compared among ponds, tadpole density correlated positively with the nitrate:phosphate ratio. This suggests that water chemistry may have affected survival, either directly or indirectly via productivity. Within ponds, both species showed a clear preference for the shallow zone. This behavior probably reflects a preference for warm water close to the surface, rather than avoidance of predators, because relative densities of odonates also increased from deep to shallow zones. This study is one of few that not only considers the distribution of the anuran tadpoles but the distribution of their predators as well.

Abstract:Blood and urine samples for determination of manganese (Mn) and iron (Fe) concentrations were collected in a cross-sectional study of 137 currently exposed welders, 137 referents and 34 former welders. Aerosol samples for measurements of personal air exposure to Mn and Fe were also collected. The aerosol samples were assessed for their solubility using a simulated lung lining fluid (Hatch solution). On average 13.8% of the total Mn mass (range 1-49%; N = 237) was soluble (Hatch sol), while only 1.4% (<0.1-10.0%; N = 237) of the total Fe mass was Hatch sol. The welders had statistically significantly higher geometric mean concentrations of Mn in whole blood (B-Mn 12.8 vs. 8.0 μg L (-1)), serum (S-Mn 1.04 vs. 0.77 μg L(-1)) and urine (U-Mn 0.36 vs. 0.07 μg g (-1) cr.) than the referents. Statistically significant univariate correlations were observed between exposure to Hatch sol Mn in the welding aerosol and B-Mn, S-Mn and U-Mn respectively. Pearson's correlation coefficient between mean Hatch sol Mn of two days preceding the collection of biological samples and U-Mn was 0.46 (p < 0.001). The duration of employment as a welder in years was also associated with B-Mn and S-Mn, but not with U-Mn. Statistically significantly higher U-Mn and B-Mn were observed in welders currently exposed to even less than 12 and 6 μg m (-3) Hatchsol Mn, respectively. When using the 95(th) percentile concentration among the referents as a cut-point, 70.0 and 64.5% of the most highly exposed welders exceeded this level with respect to B-Mn and U-Mn. The concentrations of B-Mn, S-Mn and U-Mn were all highly correlated in the welders, but not in the referents.
Habitat and landscape characteristics underlying anuran community structure along an urban-rural gradient

Abstract:Urbanization has been cited as an important factor in worldwide amphibian declines, and although recent work has illustrated the important influence of broad-scale ecological patterns and processes on amphibian populations, little is known about the factors structuring amphibian communities in urban landscapes. We therefore examined amphibian community responses to wetland habitat availability and landscape characteristics along an urban-rural gradient in central Iowa, USA, a region experiencing rapid suburban growth. We conducted call surveys at 61 wetlands to estimate anuran calling activity, and quantified wetland habitat structure and landscape context. We used canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) to examine patterns in anuran community structure and identify the most important variables associated with those patterns. Urban density at the landscape scale had a significant negative influence on overall anuran abundance and diversity. While every species exhibited a decrease in abundance with increasing urban density, this pattern was especially pronounced for species requiring post-breeding upland habitats. Anurans most affected by urbanization were those associated with short hydroperiods, early breeding activity, and substantial upland habitat use. We suggest that broad-scale landscape fragmentation is an important factor underlying anuran community structure in this region, possibly due to limitations on the accessibility of otherwise suitable habitat in fragmented urban landscapes. This study underscores the importance of a regional approach to amphibian conservation in urban and urbanizing areas; in fragmented landscapes, a network of interconnected wetland and upland habitats may be more likely to support a successful, diverse anuran community than will isolated sites.
Variable temperature regimes and wetland salinity reduce performance of juvenile wood frogs

Abstract:On a changing planet, amphibians must respond to weather events shifting in frequency and magnitude, and to how those temperature and precipitation changes interact with other anthropogenic disturbances that modify amphibian habitat. To understand how drastic changes in environmental conditions affect wood frog tadpoles, we tested five temperature manipulations, including Ambient (water temperatures tracking daily air temperatures), Elevated (+ 3 °C above ambient), Nightly (removal of nightly lows), Spike (+ 6 °C above ambient every third week), and Flux (alternating ambient and + 3 °C weekly) crossed with Low Salt (specific conductivity: 109–207 μS-cm) and High Salt (1900–2000 μS-cm). We replicated each of the ten resulting treatments four times. High-salinity conditions produced larger metamorphs than low-salinity conditions. Tadpole survival was reduced only by the Spike treatment ( P = 0.017). Elevated temperatures did not shorten larval periods; time to metamorphosis did not differ among temperature treatments ( P = 0.328). We retained 135 recently metamorphosed frogs in outdoor terrestrial enclosures for 10 months to investigate larval environment carryover effects. Juvenile frogs grew larger in low-density terrestrial enclosures than high density ( P = 0.015) and frogs from Ambient Low Salt larval conditions grew and survived better than frogs from manipulated larval conditions. Frogs from High Salt larval conditions had lower survival than frogs from Low Salt conditions. Our results suggest that anthropogenic disturbances to larval environmental conditions can affect both larval and post-metamorphic individuals, with detrimental carryover effects of high-salinity larval conditions not emerging until the juvenile life stage.

Abstract:The biodiversity values of temporary pools in tropical ecosystems are poorly understood. Such wetlands are often threatened by agriculture. Constructed pools provide a means to mitigate for loss of natural pools but design features associated with restoration successful are not known. In this paper, we evaluated the effects of environmental variables at local (breeding pools) and regional spatial scales (landscape configuration) on species richness and abundance of anurans in heavily altered landscapes of southeastern Brazil. Frog and toad communities of 18 constructed temporary breeding pools were sampled every 2 weeks from October 2008 to March 2009. Two variables—hydroperiod and percentage of vegetation in the interior of the pools—explained 62% of species richness variation. Three other variables—pool area, distance of pools to forest fragments, and distance of pools to road—explained between 22 and 46% of the variation in frog and toad abundance. Our results indicate that local- and regional-scale variables, and their interaction, are important drivers of the structure of frog and toad communities in these agricultural landscapes. To facilitate amphibian conservation we suggest that cattle ranchers create and maintain heavily vegetated temporary pools near protected forest reserves as both a water source for livestock and breeding habitat for amphibians.

Abstract:We investigated the influence of landscape and wetland characteristics on pond-breeding amphibian assemblages in south-central New Hampshire, a relatively low populated and heavily forested region of the northeastern United States. This allowed us to better understand landscape influences in less disturbed areas, and to determine critical landscape disturbance thresholds, above which amphibians are negatively impacted. We sampled 61 wetlands for larval amphibians in 1998 and 1999 to examine the influence of forest cover and road density (at seven buffer distances between 100 and 2000 m) and wetland characteristics on larval amphibian assemblages. Assemblages were influenced primarily by forest cover and wetland hydroperiod. Species richness was most strongly influenced by the proportion of forest cover within 1000 m of the wetland. Several species were also influenced by forest cover, but were differentially influenced by buffer widths. Our study suggests that, at least in the northeast US, wetlands with <40% forest cover within a 1000 m radius may have depauperate larval amphibian assemblages, and forest cover above 60% within a 1000 m radius is likely to ensure species rich and abundant larval amphibian assemblages. Given the above, current federal and state regulations that focus amphibian protection efforts on narrow terrestrial buffers surrounding wetlands are likely to be inadequate.

Abstract:More than half of Brazil's Cerrado has been converted to agricultural land use, threatening its rich biodiversity that includes > 200 anuran species, most of which have aquatic larvae and are thus doubly susceptible to the environmental impacts of agriculture. Past research has largely focused on how land-use change affects adult anurans, which ignores potential impacts on the critical larval stage. We therefore investigated how agricultural land use (250–1000 m scale) and the local pond environment affect the diversity and distribution of tadpole assemblages across the central Cerrado. Tadpole richness declined significantly with increasing cropland within 250 m of ponds and with increasing water pH in permanent ponds. Permanent ponds are more prevalent in agricultural areas where streams are impounded to provide water for irrigation and livestock, and water pH increases with increasing agriculture, likely due to the widespread use of agricultural lime in the Cerrado. Tadpole communities exhibited high beta diversity (81–86% dissimilarity), with species replacement rather than nestedness accounting for 90–97% of species differences between ponds, which was largely driven by hydroperiod. Six species accounted for 70% of the dissimilarity, with most species either more abundant or found only in temporary ponds. Increased lentification, a corollary of agricultural land use, is profoundly altering tadpole assemblages, which has consequences for overall anuran diversity in the Cerrado given that permanent ponds support a different and less-diverse larval assemblage than ephemeral wetlands. Anuran conservation in the Cerrado should therefore additionally consider maintaining or restoring wetland hydrology and native-vegetation buffers around wetlands.

Abstract:Amphibians worldwide are threatened by habitat loss, some of which is driven by a changing climate, as well as exposure to pesticides, among other causes. The timing and duration of the larval development phase vary between species, thereby influencing the relative impacts of stochastic hydroregime conditions as well as potential aquatic pesticide exposure. We describe the stages of breeding through metamorphosis for eight amphibian species, based on optimal hydroregime conditions, and use a model of pesticide fate and exposure representative of central Florida citrus groves to simulate hydrodynamics based on observed weather data over a 54‐year period. Using the Pesticide in Water Calculator and Plant Assessment Tool, we estimated daily wetland depth and pyraclostrobin exposure, with label‐recommended application quantities. Species' timing and duration of larval development determined the number of years of suitable hydroregime for breeding and the likelihood of exposure to peak aquatic concentrations of pyraclostrobin. Although the timing of pesticide application determined the number of surviving larvae, density‐dependent constraints of wetland hydroregime also affected larval survival across species and seasons. Further defining categorical amphibian life history types and habitat requirements supports the development of screening‐level assessments by incorporating environmental stochasticity at the appropriate temporal resolution. Subsequent refinement of these screening‐level risk assessment strategies to include spatially explicit landscape data along with terrestrial exposure estimates would offer additional insights into species vulnerability to pesticide exposure throughout the life cycle. Computational simulation of ecologically relevant exposure scenarios, such as these, offers a more realistic interpretation of differential agrichemical risk among species based on their phenology and habits and provides a more situation‐specific risk assessment perspective for threatened species. Abstract:Abstract Biodiversity is in global decline during the Anthropocene. Declines have been caused by multiple factors, such as habitat removal, invasive species, and disease, which are often targets for conservation management. However, conservation interventions are under threat from climate change induced weather extremes. Weather extremes are becoming more frequent and devastating and an example of this was the 2019/2020 Australian drought and mega-fires. We provide a case study the impacts of these extreme weather events had on a population of the threatened frog Litoria aurea that occurs in a constructed habitat which was designed to reduce the impact of introduced fish and chytrid-induced disease. We aimed to determine what factors influenced persistence so that the design of wetlands can be further optimised to future-proof threatened amphibians. We achieved this with 4 years (2016–2020) of intensive capture–recapture surveys during austral spring and summer across nine wetlands ( n = 94 repeat surveys). As hypothesized, drought caused a sharp reduction in population size, but persistence was achieved. The most parsimonious predictor of survival was an interaction between maximum air temperature and rainfall, indicating that weather extremes likely caused the decline. Survival was positively correlated with wetland vegetation coverage, positing this is an important feature to target to enhance resilience in wetland restoration programs. Additionally, the benefits obtained from measures to reduce chytrid prevalence were not compromised during drought, as there was a positive correlation between salinity and survival. We emphasize that many species may not be able to persist under worse extreme weather scenarios. Despite the potential for habitat augmentation to buffer effects of extreme weather, global action on climate change is needed to reduce extinction risk.

Abstract:Water extraction and climate change are altering the availability of surface water globally, thereby contributing to amphibian population declines. The managed delivery of water to benefit environmental values (environmental watering) is a promising conservation technique that can support amphibian recruitment and maintain viable populations. Environmental water can be delivered in various spatial patterns and with different frequencies, but comparing the effectiveness of competing strategies is complicated by variable and interactive environmental processes. We built a spatially explicit, stochastic, hydroecological metapopulation model to compare the effects of five environmental‐watering scenarios on the probability of persistence of threatened southern bell frogs (Litoria raniformis) in a major river reach in southern Australia. We compared a no‐intervention control to two managed watering frequencies (moderate and frequent) delivered in two spatial designs (managed wetlands grouped or spread across the reach). More frequent water provision to intervention sites improved the reach‐wide (metapopulation) probability of persistence, and spreading intervention sites across the reach improved persistence more than grouping intervention sites together. When re‐examined under severe drought conditions, L. raniformis had a 0.04 probability of persistence without intervention, which improved to 0.56 with high watering frequency. Model‐guided environmental water provision can improve reach‐wide persistence of amphibian metapopulations by guiding spatial and temporal delivery patterns to reduce the risk of extinction.

Abstract:This study investigates the success of created vernal pools in sustaining local amphibian populations (i.e., wood frogs and spotted salamanders) in a Pennsylvania state park from 2014 to 2023. By comparing environmental parameters and genetic diversity between natural and created pools, we found that well‐designed created pools positively contributed to wood frog population persistence, while one poorly designed pool acted as a population sink. Our findings underscore the importance of considering key environmental factors such as hydroperiod, volume, depth, and surrounding forest cover in vernal pool restoration while also integrating these data with population genetics to guide adaptive management strategies in the face of environmental change. The decline of biodiversity, particularly among amphibians, is strongly associated with habitat loss and fragmentation. Vernal pools are a critical ecosystem for many pool‐breeding amphibians, but they are often overlooked in wetland protection guidelines. Mitigation efforts include vernal pool creation and restoration, but these efforts have varying success in replacing lost functions. This study investigates the success of created vernal pools through long‐term environmental monitoring of wood frogs and spotted salamanders (2014–2023) and integrates population genetics to assess the local population health of the wood frog. First, we monitored and compared environmental parameters and reproductive success of indicator species between natural and created pools in a Pennsylvania state park. We then used microsatellite loci to assess within‐ and between‐pool measures of genetic diversity, population structuring, and gene flow for wood frogs. We found two carefully designed created pools positively contributed to local amphibian population persistence by maintaining similar measures of genetic diversity as compared to natural pools. On the other hand, one poorly created pool was genetically distinct and acted as a population sink. Although our findings offer valuable insights, they are based on a limited sample and may not fully represent the broader landscape. However, by integrating genetic information into long‐term monitoring datasets, our interdisciplinary approach enhances our understanding of amphibian population dynamics in vernal pool ecosystems. Our findings imply that the most important factors for restoration practitioners to consider when creating or restoring vernal pools are hydroperiod (12–35 weeks), volume (> 50 m3), depth (≥ 30 cm), and surrounding forest land cover (> 60%). These variables are better predictors of indicator species success than pool type (i.e., natural or created). Ultimately, this study emphasizes the need to accompany restoration efforts with long‐term monitoring programs that can be used to make adaptive management decisions in an era of extreme environmental change.

Abstract:The study of tadpole assemblages allows inferring habitat availability and using their occupation as a means of proxy for the effective reproduction of the species, contributing to complementary information for the study of their adult forms. Environmental variables, represented by abiotic variables, vegetation structure, matrix management, and landscape elements, affect species having reproductive modes associated with oviposition and development in bodies of water. In the Orinoco region, most amphibians have complex life cycles and deposit their eggs in highly dynamic lentic bodies of water. Therefore, it is important to know how larval assemblages change over short periods of water accumulation and their relationship with environmental variables. Fieldwork was conducted during 9 weeks of larval sampling, from the beginning of the rainy season. We evaluate changes in anuran assemblages associated with water accumulation in five temporary water bodies of anthropogenic (road or pasture) and natural (savanna or gallery forest) origin. Twenty environmental variables were evaluated and measured in the center of each water body. Of these, nine landscape variables were measured only once during the study. The other eleven variables, representing management practices, physicochemical and structural characteristics of the water bodies, were measured weekly during the 3 months of sampling. We explored differences in the structure and diversity of larval-stage anuran assemblages using statistical tests suitable for small sample sizes (i.e., permutational multivariate analysis of variance PERMANOVA and the distance-based linear modeling DistLM). Of the 14 species found, two species had remarkedly high abundances from which Rhinella humboldti (19% of the total tadpole abundance) was a generalist inhabiting the natural and anthropogenic water bodies, while Leptodactylus insularum (18% of the total tadpole abundance) was a specialist at a natural pond in the savanna. The natural water bodies contained the highest number of species (between 10 and 12) and a total abundance of larvae (between 847 and 485 individuals). In contrast, the anthropogenic water body tracks generated by tractors were only occupied by two species with 50 individuals in total, while the water body generated by the trampling of cattle in pastures had three species with 474 individuals. These three species that inhabited the anthropogenic puddles were also found in the natural ponds and none of the eight species of hylids inhabited the puddles. In each field trip, all the tadpoles were collected from the sampled bodies of water. However, a week later, we found that each of the water bodies had been recolonized by four species ( Leptodactylus fuscus, Leptodactylus fragilis, Elachistocleis ovalis, and R. humbolti ). The variables with the highest explanatory power on the variation of anuran assemblage structure throughout all the water bodies were height of plants, number of cattle, distance to the nearest native forest edge, distance to an anthropic lentic body of water, distance to a natural lentic body of water, and pH. The bodies of water immersed in the natural cover were more diverse and had a greater degree of spatial and temporal species turnover. Our study calls for the importance of understanding the turnover of larval stage anurans over short periods, associated with water accumulation, in highly dynamic systems such as natural ponds and anthropogenic puddles. The importance of species traits and local processes is also highlighted, from environmental variables to human management activities, in the conservation of amphibian assemblages.

Abstract:Land use changes are considered a significant cause of amphibian declines worldwide. However, little is known regarding which land uses have more pervasive impacts and which help to supplement the biodiversity conserved in protected areas. In addition, amphibian species respond to a broad array of geographical constraints, which may blur responses to disturbance, depending on the species' natural history. Here, we explored whether functional diversity patterns of amphibian assemblages are linked to human land use while considering spatial autocorrelation and phylogenetic relatedness among species. We surveyed tadpoles along 500 km in coastal wetlands in southern Brazil and quantified four traits related to tadpole habitat use and predator avoidance. Spatial components influenced functional richness to a greater extent than land use. Functional evenness was higher in ponds surrounded by more exotic reforestation, and to a lesser extent an effect of crop area. Functional divergence was also associated with reforestation areas. Our results showed that some land uses (reforestation with exotic species and temporary crops) have more pervasive impacts on tadpole communities. Such changes in amphibian communities occurred even at low levels of landscape change. Our findings highlight that conversion to human land use requires complementary approaches (i.e., tadpole and adult responses) to provide early warning signals about habitat modification effects.

Assessing factors that increase dusky gopher frog larval performance in open‐canopy wetlands

Abstract:We raised dusky gopher frog tadpoles in headstarting tanks in a split‐plot design to examine the relative strengths of factors that alter larval performance under different canopy conditions. We found that sunlight (not heat alone) and herbaceous plants are important in increasing dusky gopher frog survival and mass in open canopy conditions. Amphibians are declining worldwide, and research on their habitats and ecology is important for their conservation. The endangered dusky gopher frog (Rana sevosa) breeds exclusively in isolated, open canopy wetlands, usually with extensive herbaceous growth. Larvae of the dusky gopher frog have higher growth and survival under open canopy than under closed canopy conditions. The mechanisms whereby this occurs are poorly understood, however. In the summer of 2021 in Harrison County, Mississippi, USA, we conducted a complete factorial experiment in mesocosms to compare the relative influence of factors differing between open and closed canopy ponds on larvae. A heat and light treatment consisted of one third of tanks being exposed to full sunlight, one third of tanks being shaded with 70% shadecloth, and the final third being shaded with 70% shadecloth but heated to mimic the temperature of the full sun tanks. In addition, tanks received a closed canopy tree leaf litter mixture or an open canopy herbaceous vegetation mixture, and vertical vegetation‐like structure made of polypropylene rope or not. Cool shaded tanks and heated shaded tanks had identical survival to metamorphosis at 74.7% and produced frogs with an average mass of 2.21 g and 2.09 g, respectively, while tanks in full sunlight achieved significantly higher 93.4% survival to metamorphosis and an average mass of 2.64 g. The open canopy vegetation mixture yielded an average tank survival of 88.3% and mass of 2.94 g, compared to closed canopy vegetation tanks with a significantly lower survival of 73.5% and average mass of 1.61 g. Added structure had no effect on survival or mass. These results indicate that sunlight (not heat alone) and herbaceous plants are important in increasing dusky gopher frog survival and mass in open canopy conditions and suggest that management for these characteristics receive priority in captive‐rearing programs and habitat restoration.

Abstract:Density dependent carry-over effects from one life history stage to another can affect the dynamics of populations. Here we study such carry-over effects from the tadpole to the postmetamorphic juvenile stage in an endangered amphibian, the natterjack toad ( Epidalea calamita ). We raised tadpoles in outdoor aquatic mesocosms at four densities and assessed juvenile performance after metamorphosis in terrestrial mesocosms. High larval density reduced mass at metamorphosis by 50 % and doubled the length of the larval period. Survival was reduced at the high densities. Larger metamorphs had higher survival in terrestrial mesocosms and remained larger than cohort members at the end of the 30-day experiment. Because juvenile survival drives amphibian population dynamics, density-dependent carry-over effects to the juvenile stage are likely to affect population viability. We discuss the implications of the results for amphibian conservation practice, both pond construction programs and surveys of amphibian populations.
