Abstract:Web revisitation is a common behavior supported by many web history tools. Taking advantages of access context (like time, location, concurrent activity), context-based search of previously accessed web pages is also being investigated, due to the fact that context under which information is accessed tends to be more easily to remember than content. To mimic users' memory recall, we present a way to automatically capture user's access context from user's concurrent computer programs, and manage it in a probabilistic context tree for each accessed web page in a life cycle. An algorithm for contextual keyword search of accessed web pages, together with a revisitation feedback mechanism, are also given. We evaluate the proposed method on synthetic data and through a 6-week user study. The comparisons of revisit precision and recall show our method outperforms the existing contextual search method YouPivot. In the user study, our method can also work as effectively as popular methods (like bookmark, browse history) in recall rate (over 90%), while with less average time cost (16.25 seconds) than that (38.66 seconds) of those methods to complete a web revisitation task.

Abstract:We explore improving support for revisitation in documents by automatically generating bookmarks based on users' reading history. After showing that dwell time and number of visits are not appropriate for predicting revisitations in documents, we model the high-level reading task as a sequence of reading blocks and recognize long-distance scrolls as separators between them. A long-distance scroll is defined as a continuous scrolling action which causes the document to be navigated beyond a one-page distance. We propose a new technique, called the Head–Tail (HT) algorithm, to generate bookmarks at the head and the tail of reading blocks, whose validity is quantitatively verified by log data analysis. Two studies were conducted to investigate this HT implicit bookmarking technique. The first is a controlled experiment that compared the HT algorithm to the widely used simple recency algorithm for generating implicit bookmarks, in terms of revisit coverage ability and distance between bookmarks. Results showed the HT algorithm to be superior in both measures. The second is a more ecologically valid study that investigated implicit bookmarking performance in real reading tasks, using Adobe Reader integrated with our implicit bookmarking technique. Results showed that our technique covered 85.1% of revisitations and saved users from 66.0% of long-distance scrolling actions. We end with a discussion of how to encourage users to use implicit bookmarks.

Abstract:In this paper, a char-based consistency maintenance algorithm is introduced which is implemented in the brainstorm edit mode on the Web-based Real-time cooperative edit system. Here we put forward a star-like system architecture, which is based on events' intercepting-transmiting-recuring, and uses an improved transformation algorithm that is based GOTO algorithm to realize the consistency maintenance. With this improved algorithm, we get high responsiveness of local operations and good consistency among distributed users' operations. At the end of this paper, we introduce our experiment system WRCES.

Abstract:Modern knowledge workers typically need to use multiple resources, such as documents, web pages, and applications, at the same time. This complexity in their computing environments forces workers to restore various resources in the course of their work. However, conventional curation methods like bookmarks, recent document histories, and file systems place limitations on effective retrieval. Such features typically work only for resources of one type within one application, ignoring the interdependency between resources needed for a single task. In addition, text-based handles do not provide rich cues for users to recognize their associated resources. Hence, the need to locate and reopen relevant resources can significantly hinder knowledge workers' productivity. To address these issues, we designed and developed Scrapbook, a novel application for digital resource curation across applications that uses screenshot-based bookmarks. Scrapbook extracts and stores all the metadata (URL, file location, and application name) of windows visible in a captured screenshot to facilitate restoring them later. A week-long field study indicated that screenshot-based bookmarks helped participants curate digital resources. Additionally, participants reported that multimodal -- visual and textual -- data helped them recall past computer activities and reconstruct working contexts efficiently.

Abstract:Getting back to previously viewed web pages is a common yet uneasy task for users due to the large volume of personally accessed information on the web. This paper leverages human’s natural recall process of using episodic and semantic memory cues to facilitate recall, and presents a personal web revisitation technique called WebPagePrev through context and content keywords. Underlying techniques for context and content memories’ acquisition, storage, decay, and utilization for page re-finding are discussed. A relevance feedback mechanism is also involved to tailor to individual’s memory strength and revisitation habits. Our 6-month user study shows that: (1) Compared with the existing web revisitation tool Memento, History List Searching method, and Search Engine method, the proposed WebPagePrev delivers the best re-finding quality in finding rate (92.10%), average F1-measure (0.4318) and average rank error (0.3145). (2) Our dynamic management of context and content memories including decay and reinforcement strategy can mimic users’ retrieval and recall mechanism. With relevance feedback, the finding rate of WebPagePrev increases by 9.82%, average F1-measure increases by 47.09%, and average rank error decreases by 19.44% compared to stable memory management strategy. Among time, location, and activity context factors in WebPagePrev, activity is the best recall cue, and context+content based re-finding delivers the best performance, compared to context based re-finding and content based re-finding.

Abstract:As the Web grows, the massive increase in information is placing severe burdens on information retrieval. Automated search engines and information directories with small editorial staff are unable to keep up with the increasing submissions of Web sites. To address the problem, this article introduces the Open Bookmark service based on self-adaptive information agents. One can record favorite URLs and easily manage them in the Web site. All the records are stored in a directory-tree, with different types of records in different directories. To perform information filtering, self-adaptive information agents are established to extract the user's profile from his bookmark records that represent his interests. This makes it possible for a personal and active information service. The agents are trained through interaction with the user so as to represent his interests more exactly. Open Bookmark service is also an open framework, in which information agents communicate with each other and exchange useful information. Thus the quality of information service can be greatly improved. Our application experiences show that Open Bookmark service is much more powerful than a conventional one.

Abstract:A new information retrieval approach Zero-Keyword Information Inquiry was introduced, and based on which, an intelligent Internet information service system-Bookmark was developed. The system adopts HTTP protocol to search the information on Internet automatically, then the information sorter classifies the information of different types into proper class and loads them in to the information database. The system can analyze users' records to get their interests, and the information filter of the system then check the information database to find out what fits the needs of the user who puts forward an information recommendation request. The information evaluator of the system optimizes the system according to the user's evaluation on the recommended information. The operation results show that Bookmark does have the functions of information recording, information recommendation and information share.
Photoprev: Unifying Context and Content Cues to Enhance Personal Photo Revisitation

Abstract:Personal photo revisitation on smart phones is a common yet uneasy task for users due to the large volume of photos taken in daily life. Inspired by the human memory and its natural recall characteristics, we build a personal photo revisitation tool, PhotoPrev, to facilitate users to revisit previous photos through associated memory cues. To mimic users' episodic memory recall, we present a way to automatically generate an abundance of related contextual metadata (e.g., weather, temperature) and organize them as context lattices for each photo in a life cycle. Meanwhile, photo content (e.g., object, text) is extracted and managed in a weighted term list, which corresponds to semantic memory. A threshold algorithm based photo revisitation framework for context- and content-based keyword search on a personal photo collection, together with a user feedback mechanism, is also given. We evaluate the scalability on a large synthetic dataset by crawling users' photos from Flickr, and a 12-week user study demonstrates the feasibility and effectiveness of our photo revisitation strategies.

Abstract:Web users can bookmark Web pages and then access them rapidly by using the browser bookmarks.The research in user behavior based on browser bookmarks will be instructive and meaningful to user personalization,web page quality evaluation and large-scale web page construction.We present an analysis of the browser bookmarks dataset consisting of approximately 270 thousands users in terms of organization structure,collection content and user interest.To begin with,we propose BBCM(bookmarks browse click model) to analyze structure features and utilization efficiency of browser bookmarks.Then by comparing with PageRank,we find that users are inclined to bookmark the pages with high-quality.Finally user interest characteristics are shown with the help of ODP(open directory project).

Abstract:Revisitation, the process of non-linearly returning to previously visited regions, is an important task in academic reading. However, listening to content on mobile phones via a screen reader fails to support eyes-free revisiting due to its linear audio stream, ineffective text organization, and inaccessible interaction. To enhance the efficiency and experience of eyes-free revisiting, we identified visually impaired people's behaviors and difficulties during text revisiting through a survey (N=37) and an observation study (N=12). We proposed a series of design guidelines targeting high precision, high flexibility, and low workload in interaction, and iteratively designed and developed a reading prototype application. Our implementation supports dynamic text structure and is supplemented by both linear and non-linear layered text navigation. The evaluation results (N=8) show that compared to existing methods, our prototype improves the clarity of text understanding and fluency of revisiting with reduced workload.

Abstract:Data reconciliation problem based on rigorous model of a complex process system is a large scale nonlinear programming(NLP) problem with large degrees of freedom.NLP solvers could be inefficient to solve this kind of problems and sometimes hard to converge.In view of that the data reconciliation problem should be solved repeatedly based on the same model when the feed condition changes,a mnemonic enhancement based method was proposed to solve the problem efficiently.The proposed method uses the experience of pervious solutions to improve convergence.The frame of this method was designed and the procedure of implementation was presented.The application of this method to simulate the multi-column system and ethylene separation process system demonstrates the effectiveness of this method.

Assist inspection of biomolecular 3D structures using dynamic reference of sequence text

Abstract:A method was presented to avoid the limitations of traditional tools such as Jmol in the reference forms of sequence information using the dynamic reference of sequence text to assist the inspection of biomolecular 3D (three dimension) structures.In this method,Web related technologies such as Javascript,Frame,DIV,CSS,PHP and MySQL were used to extend the functions based on Jmol.Firstly,biomolecular sequence texts and 3D structures could be simultaneously displayed,and synchronously changed with the manipulations of molecular local regions.The sequence texts were specially laid out to facilitate the view and location of local regions,and multiple text styles such as underline,strickout,overline along with their colors were used to represent multiple states from different local manipulations.In addition,some auxiliary functions were provided,including centralized display of multiple local regions in sequence,switch of historical manipulation states and save (to the server) of current state.This method shows satisfactory performance in practice,which is useful for improving the level of the integration,imitation and visualization of biomolecular sequence and structure related bioinformation.

Abstract:As Digital Libraries (DL) become more aligned with the web architecture, their functional components need to be fundamentally rethought in terms of URIs and HTTP. Annotation, a core scholarly activity enabled by many DL solutions, exhibits a clearly unacceptable characteristic when existing models are applied to the web: due to the representations of web resources changing over time, an annotation made about a web resource today may no longer be relevant to the representation that is served from that same resource tomorrow. We assume the existence of archived versions of resources, and combine the temporal features of the emerging Open Annotation data model with the capability offered by the Memento framework that allows seamless navigation from the URI of a resource to archived versions of that resource, and arrive at a solution that provides guarantees regarding the persistence of web annotations over time. More specifically, we provide theoretical solutions and proof-of-concept experimental evaluations for two problems: reconstructing an existing annotation so that the correct archived version is displayed for all resources involved in the annotation, and retrieving all annotations that involve a given archived version of a web resource.

Abstract:Revisiting information on previously accessed pages is a common activity during active reading. Both physical and digital books have their own benefits in supporting such activity according to their manipulation natures. In this paper, we introduce QOOK, a paper-book based interactive reading system, which integrates the advanced technology of digital books with the affordances of physical books to facilitate people's information revisiting process. The design goals of QOOK are derived from the literature survey and our field study on physical and digital books respectively. QOOK allows page flipping just like on a real book and enables people to use electronic functions such as keyword searching, highlighting and bookmarking. A user study is conducted and the study results demonstrate that QOOK brings faster information revisiting and better reading experience to readers.
An Investigation of the Academic Information Finding and Re-finding Behavior on the Web

Abstract:Academic researchers often need and re-use relevant information found after a period of time. This preliminary study used various methods, including experiments, interviews, search log analysis, sequential analysis, and observation to investigate characteristics of academic information finding and re-finding behavior. Overall, the participants in this study entered short queries either in finding or re-finding phases. Comparatively speaking, the participants entered greater number of queries, modified more queries, browsed more web pages, and stayed longer on web pages in the finding phase. On the other hand, in the re-finding phase, they utilized personal information management tools to re-find instead of finding again using search engine, such as checking browsing history; moreover, they tend to input less number of queries and stayed shorter on web pages. In short, the participants interacted more with the retrieval system during the finding phase, while they increased the use of personal information management tools in the re-finding phase. As to the contextual clues used in re-finding phase, the participants used less clues from the target itself, instead, they used indirect clues more often, especially location-related information. Based on the results of sequential analysis, the transition states in the re-finding phase was found to be more complex than those in the finding phase. Web information finding and re-finding behavior is an important and novel area of research. The preliminary results would benefit research on Web information re-finding behavior, and provide useful suggestions for developing personal academic information management systems. An Exploratory Study on the Re-finding Behavior on the Web

Abstract:It is common for users to relocate information previously found on the web. However, their search behaviors in initial finding and the subsequent re-finding may differ due to the dynamic nature and contextual diversity of the web. This study used experiment, observation, interview, and questionnaires to investigate the characteristics of re-finding behavior and compare users' performance in finding and re-finding. Though not significantly different, the study participants used more search tools, combined various strategies to obtain contextual clues of finding process, utilized more complex search tactics, and had more interactions with search engines used. Findings also show that participants spent less time in re-finding than in finding, yet the cognitive loading and difficulties increased in re-finding. Participants were satisfied with the results obtained in re-finding, but they also claimed that the search performance would be better if the system offered more functions to support recall of previous search results. Participants' satisfaction with search performance also varied by task type. Based on the findings, this study recommends that re-finding efficiency may be improved by enhancing recall functionalities in browsers and by using personal information management tools (Article content in Chinese with English extended abstract)

Abstract:Revisitation in mobile Web browsers takes more time than that in desktop browsers due to the limitations of mobile phones. In this paper, we propose AutoWeb, a novel approach to speed up revisitation in mobile Web browsing. In AutoWeb, opened Web pages are automatically classified into different groups based on their contents. Users can more quickly revisit an opened Web page by narrowing down search scope into a group of pages that share the same topic. We evaluated the classification accuracy and the accuracy is 92.4%. Three experiments were conducted to investigate revisitation performance in three specific tasks. Results show AutoWeb can save significant time for revisitation by 29.5%, especially for long time Web browsing, and that it improves overall mobile Web revisitation experience. We also compare automatic classification with other revisitation methods.
