Abstract:(1) Background: Obesity poses known risks in surgery, including a prolonged operation time and postoperative complications. Given the rising obesity rates and frequent lumbar disc surgeries, understanding these risks is crucial. This study aims to assess the impact of obesity on operation duration and postoperative complications in lumbar disc prolapse surgery. (2) Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 598 patients with monosegmental disc herniation, correlating their body mass index (BMI) as a surrogate parameter for obesity with operation time. Excluding complex cases (multi-segmental herniations or recurrent herniations), complication rates and hospital stays were recorded. Simulated surgeries on 3D-printed models of varying obesity levels examined operation times and instrument suitability. (3) Results: Of these patients, 438 patients had a BMI of <30, and 160 patients had a BMI of ≥30. Complication rates showed no significant differences between groups. Linear regression analysis failed to establish a sole dependency of operation time on BMI, with R2 = 0.039 for the normal-weight group (BMI < 30) and R2 = 0.059 for the obese group (BMI ≥ 30). The simulation operations on the 3D-printed models of varying degrees of obesity showed a significant increase in the simulated operation time with higher levels of obesity. A geometrically inadequate set of surgical instruments was assumed to be a significant factor in the simulated increase in operating time. (4) Conclusions: While various factors influence operation time, obesity alone does not significantly increase it. However, simulated surgeries highlighted the impact of obesity, particularly on instrument limitations. Understanding these complexities is vital for optimizing surgical outcomes in obese patients.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION: Currently, the impact of body mass index (BMI) on the outcomes of laparoscopic liver resections (LLR) is poorly defined. This study attempts to evaluate the impact of BMI on the peri-operative outcomes following laparoscopic left lateral sectionectomy (L-LLS).METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 2183 patients who underwent pure L-LLS at 59 international centers between 2004 and 2021 was performed. Associations between BMI and selected peri-operative outcomes were analyzed using restricted cubic splines.RESULTS: A BMI of >27kg/m2 was associated with increased in blood loss (Mean difference (MD) 21 mls, 95% CI 5-36), open conversions (Relative risk (RR) 1.13, 95% CI 1.03-1.25), operative time (MD 11 min, 95% CI 6-16), use of Pringles maneuver (RR 1.15, 95% CI 1.06-1.26) and reductions in length of stay (MD -0.2 days, 95% CI -0.3 to -0.1). The magnitude of these differences increased with each unit increase in BMI. However, there was a "U" shaped association between BMI and morbidity with the highest complication rates observed in underweight and obese patients.CONCLUSION: Increasing BMI resulted in increasing difficulty of L-LLS. Consideration should be given to its incorporation in future difficulty scoring systems in laparoscopic liver resections.

Abstract:ObjectiveTo investigate the prevalence of musculoskeletal (MSK) injuries in bariatric surgeons around the world.BackgroundAs the popularity of bariatric surgery increases, efforts into improving its patient safety and decreasing its invasiveness have also been on the rise. However, with this shift towards minimal invasiveness, surgeon ergonomic constraints have been imposed, with a recent report showing a 73–88% prevalence of physical complaints in surgeons performing laparoscopic surgeries.MethodsA web-based survey was designed and sent out to bariatric surgeons around the world. Participants were queried about professional background, primary practice setting, and various issues related to bariatric surgeries and MSK injuries.ResultsThere were 113 responses returned from surgeons from 34 countries around the world. 68.5% of the surgeons have had more than 10 years of experience in laparoscopic surgery, 65.8% in open, and 0.9% in robotic surgery. 66% of participants reported that they have experienced some level of discomfort/pain attributed to surgical reasons, causing the case load to decrease in 27.2% of the surgeons. It was seen that the back was the most affected area in those performing open surgery, while shoulders and back were equally as affected in those performing laparoscopic, and the neck for those performing robotic, with 29.4% of the surgeons reporting that this pain has affected their task accuracy/surgical performance. A higher percentage of females than males reported pain in the neck, back, and shoulder area when performing laparoscopic procedures. Supine positioning of patients evoked more discomfort in the wrists, while the French position caused more discomfort in the back region. A higher percentage of surgeons who did not exercise experienced more issues in the neck and back region, while those that exercised more than 3 h a week experienced issues in their shoulders and wrists in both open and laparoscopic approaches. Only 57.7% sought medical treatment for their MSK problem, of which 6.35% had to undergo surgery for their issue, of which 55.6% of those felt that the treatment resolved their problem.ConclusionMSK injuries and pain are a common occurrence among the population of bariatric surgeons (66%), and has the ability to hinder performance at work. Therefore, it is of importance to investigate ways in which to improve ergonomics for these surgeons as to improve quality of life.

Abstract:Objective: To investigate the relationship between physical attributes and difficulty performing laparoscopic maneuvers with the prevalence of self-reported musculoskeletal injury. Study design: Online survey. Sample population: Surgeons (n = 140) with 3 or more years of laparoscopic experience. Methods: Electronic survey distributed via LISTSERVEs and Facebook groups. Responses collected included surgeon attributes, presence of musculoskeletal injuries, and surgical practice data. Statistical analysis was performed using the Shapiro-Wilk test, linear regression, logistic regression, and Wilcoxon rank sum tests. Results: A total of 52 of the 140 respondents reported a musculoskeletal injury with 38 specifying at least one injury (72%). Neck strain was the most prevalent reported musculoskeletal injury (18/52, 34.6%), followed by shoulder tendinopathies (16/52, 30.8%), arm/hand tendonitis (8/52, 15.4%), carpal tunnel (7/52, 13.5%), back pain (4/52, 7.7%) and arm/hand arthritis (1/52, 1.9%). Women were significantly more likely to report a musculoskeletal problem than men (p = .011) with the odds of women reporting a musculoskeletal injury 2.59 times greater than men. Women and surgeons with smaller glove sizes were significantly more likely to report shoulder tendonitis (p = .034, p = .1) and neck strain (p = .009, p = .001). Respondents with a musculoskeletal problem experienced significantly more difficulty using rotating cup biopsy forceps (p < .001) and perceived this as difficult a greater amount of time (p = .006). Conclusion: Female surgeons report more musculoskeletal injuries than their male counterparts. Surgeons with musculoskeletal injuries experience more difficulty performing particular laparoscopic maneuvers. Clinical significance: Improving ergonomics for women and surgeons with smaller glove sizes must be prioritized to improve surgeon health and laparoscopic instrument use.

Abstract:Kinetic modelling overcomes some of the drawbacks of purely intuitive thinking in integrating information accumulated on chemical reactions involved in oxidative stress. However, it is important to assess if current knowledge about the reactions that mediate lipid peroxidation already allows satisfactory modelling of this process in near-to-physiological conditions. In this paper, a set of increasingly complex in vitro experiments on antioxidants (alpha-tocopherol and ascorbate) and lipid peroxidation in heterogeneous systems is simulated. Quantitative to semiquantitative agreement is found between experimental and simulation results. In addition, this theoretical analysis provided useful insights, suggested new hypotheses and experiments and pointed out relevant aspects needing further research. The results encourage and serve as partial validation for the formulation of relatively detailed mathematical models of in vivo lipid peroxidation. Some important aspects of the formulation and analysis of such models are discussed.

Abstract:AbstractIntroductionWork related injuries in minimally invasive surgery (MIS) are common because of the strains placed on the surgeon’s or assistant’s body. The objective of this study was to compare specific ergonomic risks among surgeons and surgical trainees performing robotic and laparoscopic procedures.Materials and methodsErgonomic data and discomfort questionnaires were recorded from surgeons and trainees (fellows/residents) for both robotic and laparoscopic procedures. Perceived discomfort questionnaires were recorded pre/postoperatively. Intraoperatively, biomechanical loads were captured using motion tracking sensors and electromyography (EMG) sensors. Perceived discomfort, body position and muscle activity were compared between robotic and laparoscopic procedures using a linear regression model.ResultsTwenty surgeons and surgical trainees performed 29 robotic and 48 laparoscopic procedures. Postoperatively, increases in right finger numbness and right shoulder stiffness and surgeon irritability were noted after laparoscopy and increased back stiffness after robotic surgery. Further, the laparoscopic group saw increases in right hand/shoulder pain (OR 0.8; p = 0.032) and left hand/shoulder pain (0.22; p < 0.001) compared to robotic. Right deltoid and trapezius excessive muscle activity were significantly higher in laparoscopic operations compared to robotic. Demanding and static positioning was similar between the two groups except there was significantly more static neck position required for robotic operations.ConclusionRobotic assisted surgeries led to lower postoperative discomfort and muscle strain in both upper extremities, particularly dominant side of the surgeon, but increased static neck positioning with subjective back stiffness compared with laparoscopy. These recognized ergonomic differences between the two platforms can be used to raise surgeon awareness of their intraoperative posture and to develop targeted physical and occupational therapy interventions to decrease surgeon WMSDs and increase surgeon longevity.
BMI and Risk of Serious Upper Body Injury Following Motor Vehicle Crashes: Concordance of Real-World and Computer-Simulated Observations

Abstract:BACKGROUND:Men tend to have more upper body mass and fat than women, a physical characteristic that may predispose them to severe motor vehicle crash (MVC) injuries, particularly in certain body regions. This study examined MVC-related regional body injury and its association with the presence of driver obesity using both real-world data and computer crash simulation.METHODS AND FINDINGS:Real-world data were from the 2001 to 2005 National Automotive Sampling System Crashworthiness Data System. A total of 10,941 drivers who were aged 18 years or older involved in frontal collision crashes were eligible for the study. Sex-specific logistic regression models were developed to analyze the associations between MVC injury and the presence of driver obesity. In order to confirm the findings from real-world data, computer models of obese subjects were constructed and crash simulations were performed. According to real-world data, obese men had a substantially higher risk of injury, especially serious injury, to the upper body regions including head, face, thorax, and spine than normal weight men (all p<0.05). A U-shaped relation was found between body mass index (BMI) and serious injury in the abdominal region for both men and women (p<0.05 for both BMI and BMI(2)). In the high-BMI range, men were more likely to be seriously injured than were women for all body regions except the extremities and abdominal region (all p<0.05 for interaction between BMI and sex). The findings from the computer simulation were generally consistent with the real-world results in the present study.CONCLUSIONS:Obese men endured a much higher risk of injury to upper body regions during MVCs. This higher risk may be attributed to differences in body shape, fat distribution, and center of gravity between obese and normal-weight subjects, and between men and women. The Association between High Body Mass Index and Early Clinical Outcomes in Patients with Proximal Femur Fractures

Abstract:Background: Fractures of the proximal femur constitute daily work in orthopedic trauma surgery. With the continuous increase of obesity in the general population, surgeons face several known technical challenges. The aim of this study was to investigate the association of high body mass index (BMI) in patients with proximal femur fractures with intra- and postoperative adverse events, as well as with functional outcomes after successful surgery. Methods: In this retrospective, single-center cohort study, 950 patients who sustained a fracture of the proximal femur (femoral neck fracture or trochanteric fracture) and underwent surgical treatment at our level I trauma center between 2003 and 2015 were included. Patient-specific data were obtained in regard to demographics, comorbidities, and fracture morphology. In-hospital postoperative complications (i.e., need for revision surgery, wound site infection, pneumonia, urinary tract infection, necessary transfusion, and deep-vein thrombosis) were analyzed, along with the length of hospitalization and overall mortality rate. Functional outcome was assessed using the Barthel index and the patient’s ability to walk on crutches. Mortality rate and need for revision surgery were assessed over a two-year time period. Any adverse event was correlated to one of the four WHO’s BMI groups. Results: The cohort included 80 (8.4%) underweight patients, 570 (60.0%) normal weight patients, 241 (25.4%) overweight patients, and 59 (6.2%) obese patients. We found more femoral neck fractures (506, or 53%) than trochanteric fractures (444, or 47%). In bivariate analysis, no significant difference was found in regard to overall mortality or postoperative complications. Hospitalization time (LOS) differed between the underweight (12.3 ± 4.8 days), normal (13.6 ± 7.8 days), overweight (14.2 ± 11.7 days), and obese patients (16.0 ± 9.7 days) (p = 0.040). Operation time increased stepwise with increasing BMI: underweight = 85.3 ± 42.9 min; normal weight = 90.2 ± 38.2 min; overweight = 99.9 ± 39.9 min; obese = 117.2 ± 61.5 min (p < 0.001). No significant difference was found by analyzing functional outcomes. However, patients with intermediate BMI levels (18.5–30 kg/m2) tended to achieve the best results, as represented by a higher Barthel index score and the patient’s ability to walk on crutches. Conclusion: Increased BMI in patients with proximal femur fractures is associated with both longer operation time and length of hospitalization (LOS). Postoperative mobilization and functional outcomes appear to follow a reversed J-curve distribution (with overweight patients showing the best functional results), whereas both obese and underweight patients have associated poorer function.

Abstract:Introduction Surgeons may experience physical and mental health problems because of their jobs, which may lead to chronic muscle damage, burnout, or even withdrawal. However, these are often ignored in camera -holder assistants during laparoscopic surgery. We aimed to analyze the differences between operating surgeons and camera-holder assistants. Methods From January 1, 2022, to December 31, 2022, a cross-sectional survey was conducted to evaluate the muscle pain, fatigue, verbal scolding, and task load for operating surgeons and camera-holder assistants. The Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire, the Space Administration Task Load Index, and the Surgical Task Load Index (SURG-TLX) were combined in the questionnaire. Results 2,184 operations were performed by a total of 94 operating surgeons and 220 camera assistants. 81% of operating surgeons and 78% of camera-holder assistants reported muscle pain/discomfort during the procedure. The most affected anatomic region was the shoulders for operating surgeons, and the lower back for camera-holder assistants. Intraoperative fatigue was reported by 41.7% of operating surgeons and 51.7% of camera-holder assistants. 55.2% of camera-holder assistants reported verbal scolding from the operating surgeons, primarily attributed to lapses in laparoscope movement coordination. The SURG-TLX results showed that the distributions of mental, physical, and situational stress for operating surgeons and camera-holder assistants were comparable. Conclusion Like operating surgeons, camera-holder assistants also face similar physical and mental health impairments while performing laparoscopic surgery. Improvements to the working conditions of the camera-holder assistant should not be overlooked.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Data on the effect of body mass index on laparoscopic liver resections are conflicting. We performed this study to investigate the association between body mass index and postoperative outcomes after laparoscopic major hepatectomies.METHODS: This is a retrospective review of 4,348 laparoscopic major hepatectomies at 58 centers between 2005 and 2021, of which 3,383 met the study inclusion criteria. Concomitant major operations, vascular resections, and previous liver resections were excluded. Associations between body mass index and perioperative outcomes were analyzed using restricted cubic splines. Modeled effect sizes were visually rendered and summarized.RESULTS: A total of 1,810 patients (53.5%) had normal weight, whereas 1,057 (31.2%) were overweight and 392 (11.6%) were obese. One hundred and twenty-four patients (3.6%) were underweight. Most perioperative outcomes showed a linear worsening trend with increasing body mass index. There was a statistically significant increase in open conversion rate (16.3%, 10.8%, 9.2%, and 5.6%, P < .001), longer operation time (320 vs 305 vs 300 and 266 minutes, P < .001), increasing blood loss (300 vs 300 vs 295 vs 250 mL, P = .022), and higher postoperative morbidity (33.4% vs 26.3% vs 25.0% vs 25.0%, P = .009) in obese, overweight, normal weight, and underweight patients, respectively (P < .001). However, postoperative major morbidity demonstrated a "U"-shaped association with body mass index, whereby the highest major morbidity rates were observed in underweight and obese patients.CONCLUSION: Laparoscopic major hepatectomy was associated with poorer outcomes with increasing body mass index for most perioperative outcome measures.

Abstract:Objective: This article presents the implementation of surgeon's musculo-skeletal model for gesture analysis in laparoscopy, thereby providing a complete account of the objective metrics needed to evaluate surgical performance and to improve the design of new surgical instruments including robotic instrumentation for surgical procedures. Background: Previous published work has been based exclusively on the kinematics involved whereas, this study is focused on the dynamics and muscle contraction analysis to assess loads on bones and muscle fatigue during simulation of surgical interventions. Methods: Nine medical students and 2 fully trained surgeons participated in the experimental sessions using a virtual laparoscopic simulator. Movement was acquired by means of an Optical Localization System and processed by means of the biomechanical software platform ADAMS-LifeMOD. Results: The musculo-skeletal analysis allows calculation of how the muscles are used and their respective mean work during the exercises. Results, relative to biceps and trapezius for left and right arm, clearly demonstrate different proficiencies between surgeons and medical students and highlight differences in using different surgical instruments and assumption of different postures. Conclusions: The model provides data on the evaluation of biomechanical parameters of surgical gesture not only in kinematic terms but also includes analysis of the dynamics of muscle contraction analysis during surgical manipulations.
Ergonomic Assessment of the Surgeon’s Physical Workload During Robot-Assisted Versus Standard Laparoscopy in a French Multicenter Randomized Trial (ROBOGYN-1004 Trial)

Abstract:BackgroundStandard laparoscopy (SL) is responsible for musculoskeletal disorders in surgeons because of poor ergonomic positions, which could be reduced by robot-assisted laparoscopy (RAL) owing to the surgeons’ seated position. One of the aims of the ROBOGYN-1004 study (NCT01247779) was to evaluate surgeons’ workloads during real-time procedures of gynecological oncological surgery.MethodsPatients with gynecological cancer eligible for minimally invasive surgery were recruited from 13 French centers between December 2010 and December 2015. Physical workload was evaluated using the Borg scale every hour over the surgery duration and the perception of workload evaluated using NASA-TLX at the end of surgery.ResultsA total of 369 patients were recruited, of whom 176 underwent RAL and 193 underwent SL (per-protocol analysis). Posture during SL was significantly more challenging for all body parts except the back. There was an increase in discomfort over time (up to 4 h) for the hands and arms, neck, and legs in SL compared with RAL. Perceived physical activity and abilities were rated higher in SL than in RAL (p < 0.01), whereas perceived personal performance was higher in SL (p < 0.01). Perceived physical effort during surgery was lower in RAL than in SL.ConclusionsRAL improves the perception of physical workload. Compared with SL, the perceived effort is lower in RAL regardless of the complexity of the surgery.

Biomechanical Investigation of the Stomach Following Different Bariatric Surgery Approaches

Abstract:Background: The stomach is a hollow organ of the gastrointestinal tract, on which bariatric surgery (BS) is performed for the treatment of obesity. Even though BS is the most effective treatment for severe obesity, drawbacks and complications are still present because the intervention design is largely based on the surgeon's expertise and intraoperative decisions. Bioengineering methods can be exploited to develop computational tools for more rational presurgical design and planning of the intervention. Methods: A computational mechanical model of the stomach was developed, considering the actual complexity of the biological structure, as the nonhomogeneous and multilayered configuration of the gastric wall. Mechanical behavior was characterized by means of an anisotropic visco-hyperelastic constitutive formulation of fiber-reinforced conformation, nonlinear elastic response, and time-dependent behavior, which assume the typical features of gastric wall mechanics. Model applications allowed for an analysis of the influence of BS techniques on stomach mechanical functionality through different computational analyses. Results: Computational results showed that laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy and endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty drastically alter stomach capacity and stiffness, while laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding modestly affects stomach stiffness and capacity. Moreover, the mean elongation strain values, which are correlated to the mechanical stimulation of gastric receptors, were elevated in laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding compared to other procedures. Conclusions: The investigation of stomach mechanical response through computational models provides information on different topics such as stomach capacity and stiffness and the mechanical stimulation of gastric receptors, which interact with the brain to control satiety. These data can provide reliable support to surgeons in the presurgical decision-making process.
Association Between Body Mass Index and Clinical Outcomes of Gender-Affirming Masculinizing Chest Reconstruction

Abstract:Introduction: Body mass index (BMI) is often used in surgical settings to determine patients' risk of complications. In the context of gender-affirming care, BMI requirements for surgery can limit access to necessary care for larger-bodied people. There is a critical need to understand the association between BMI and postoperative outcomes for this population. Methods: A retrospective chart review was conducted using the first 250 consecutive gender-affirming masculinizing chest reconstructions performed between 2017 and 2021 at a large academic medical institution. The relationships between BMI, preoperative factors, and common postsurgical outcomes were assessed. Results: Average BMI at surgery was 27.5 ± 6.7 kg/m2. Increases in BMI were associated with longer drain stays, larger volume of tissue resected, higher likelihood of nipple grafts, and lower likelihood of periareolar surgery (all P < 0.0001). Simple logistic regression revealed that BMI increases were significantly related to the likelihood of experiencing dog ears in the intermediate term (P = 0.002). Multivariate logistic regression adjusted for common covariates (age, ethnicity, smoking status, asthma, autoimmune disorders, cardiovascular conditions, and mental health disorders) did not reveal any significant relationships between BMI and the likelihood of experiencing complications at any study point. Conclusions: Masculinizing chest reconstruction is safe and satisfactory for young adult patients across the range of BMI, with significant differences in outcomes found only for esthetic complications (i.e., dog ears). Surgeons should inform patients with higher BMIs about what outcomes to expect but higher BMI should not preclude surgery access.

Abstract:Abstract Background Surgeons are among the most at risk of work-related musculoskeletal health decline because of the physical demands of surgery, which is also associated with cognitive fatigue. Minimally invasive surgery offers excellent benefits to patients but the impact of robotic or laparoscopic surgery on surgeon well-being is less well understood. This work examined the musculoskeletal and cognitive demands of robot-assisted versus standard laparoscopic surgery. Methods Medline, Embase and Cochrane databases were systematically searched for ‘Muscle strain’ AND ‘musculoskeletal fatigue’ AND ‘occupational diseases’ OR ‘cognitive fatigue’ AND ‘mental fatigue’ OR ‘standard laparoscopic surgery’ AND ‘robot-assisted laparoscopic surgery’. Primary outcomes measured were electromyographic (EMG) activity for musculoskeletal fatigue and questionnaires (NASA-TLX, SMEQ, or Borg CR-10) for cognitive fatigue. A systematic review was conducted in accordance with the Synthesis Without Meta-analysis (SWiM) Guidelines. The study was preregistered on Prospero ID: CRD42020184881. Results Two hundred and ninety-eight original titles were identified. Ten studies that were all observational studies were included in the systematic review. EMG activity was consistently lower in robotic than in laparoscopic surgery in the erector spinae and flexor digitorum muscles but higher in the trapezius muscle. This was associated with significantly lower cognitive load in robotic than laparoscopic surgery in 7 of 10 studies. Conclusions Evidence suggests a reduction in musculoskeletal demands during robotic surgery in muscles excluding the trapezius, and this is associated with most studies reporting a reduced cognitive load. Robotic surgery appears to have less negative cognitive and musculoskeletal impact on surgeons compared to laparoscopic surgery.

Abstract:Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are common among surgeons, and its prevalence varies among surgical modalities. There are conflicting results concerning the correlation between adverse work exposures and MSD prevalence in different surgical modalities. The progress of rationalization in health care may lead to job intensification for surgeons, but the literature is scarce regarding to what extent such intensification influences the physical workload in surgery. The objectives of this study were to quantify the physical workload in open surgery and compare it to that in (1) nonsurgical tasks and (2) two surgeon roles in robot-assisted surgery (RAS).
The Impact of Increased Body Mass Index on Patient Outcomes and Complications in Microsurgical Lower Extremity Reconstruction

Abstract:Background: Elevated body mass index (BMI) is a known perioperative risk factor for complications such as delayed wound healing and infection. However, there is a gap in understanding how elevated BMI impacts outcomes after posttraumatic lower extremity (LE) microvascular reconstruction. Methods: A retrospective review was performed at a level 1 trauma center between 2007 and 2022 of patients who underwent posttraumatic microvascular LE reconstruction. Demographics, flap/wound details, complications, and outcomes were recorded. Patients were stratified into BMI Center for Disease Control categories. Results: A total of 398 patients were included with an average BMI of 28.2 ± 5.8. Nearly half (45%) of LE defects were located in the distal third of the leg, 27.5% in the middle third, and 34.4% in the proximal third. Most reconstructions utilized muscle-containing flaps (74.4%) compared with fasciocutaneous flaps (16.8%). Surgical approaches included free flaps (47.6%) and local flaps (52.5%). Class III obese patients were significantly more likely to be nonambulatory than nonobese patients (OR: 4.10, 95% CI 1.10-15.2, p = 0.035). At final follow-up, 30.1% of patients with Class III obesity were ambulatory, requiring either wheelchairs (42.3%) or assistance devices (26.9%). There were no significant differences in complication rates based on obesity status (0.704). The average follow-up time for the entire cohort was 5.8 years. Conclusions: BMI is critical for patient care and surgical decision-making in LE reconstruction. Further research is warranted to optimize outcomes for higher BMI patients, thereby potentially reducing the burden of postoperative complications and enhancing overall patient recovery.
