Abstract:Lung cancer (LC) is the second most prevalent cancer worldwide and a leading cause of cancer-related deaths. Recent technological advancements have revealed that the lung microbiome, previously thought to be sterile, is host to various microorganisms. The association between the lung microbiome and LC initiation, progression, and metastasis is complex and contradictory. However, disruption in the homeostasis of microbiome compositions correlated with the increased risk of LC. This review summarises current knowledge on the most recent developments and trends in lung cancer-related microbiota or microbial components. This manuscript aims to provide information on this rapidly evolving field while giving context to the general role of the lung microbiome in LC. In addition, this review briefly discussed the causative association of lung microbiome with LC. We will review the mechanisms of how lung microbiota influences carcinogenesis, focusing on microbiota dysbiosis. Moreover, we will also discuss the host-microbiome interaction as host-microbiota plays a crucial role in stimulating and regulating the immune response. Finally, we provide information on the diagnostic role of the microbiome in LC. It aims to offer an overview of the lung microbiome as a predictive and diagnostic biomarker in LC.

Abstract:The human microbiome confers benefits or disease susceptibility to the human body through multiple pathways. Disruption of the symbiotic balance of the human microbiome is commonly found in systematic diseases such as diabetes, obesity, and chronic gastric diseases. Emerging evidence has suggested that dysbiosis of the microbiota may also play vital roles in carcinogenesis at multiple levels, e.g., by affecting metabolic, inflammatory, or immune pathways. Although the impact of the gut microbiome on the digestive cancer has been widely explored, few studies have investigated the interplay between the microbiome and lung cancer. Some recent studies have shown that certain microbes and microbiota dysbiosis are correlated with development of lung cancer. In this mini-review, we briefly summarize current research findings describing the relationship between the lung microbiome and lung cancer. We further discuss the potential mechanisms through which the lung microbiome may play a role in lung carcinogenesis and impact lung cancer treatment. A better knowledge of the interplay between the lung microbiome and lung cancer may promote the development of innovative strategies for early prevention and personalized treatment in lung cancer.

Abstract:Microbes play a significant role in human tumor development and profoundly impact treatment efficacy, particularly in immunotherapy. The respiratory tract extensively interacts with the external environment and possesses a mucosal immune system. This prompts consideration of the relationship between respiratory microbiota and lung cancer. Advancements in culture-independent techniques have revealed unique communities within the lower respiratory tract. Here, we provide an overview of the respiratory microbiota composition, dysbiosis characteristics in lung cancer patients, and microbiota profiles within lung cancer. We delve into how the lung microbiota contributes to lung cancer onset and progression through direct functions, sustained immune activation, and immunosuppressive mechanisms. Furthermore, we emphasize the clinical utility of respiratory microbiota in prognosis and treatment optimization for lung cancer.

Abstract:Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Tobacco smoking and air pollution are believed to be responsible for more than 90% of lung cancers. Respiratory pathogens are also known to be associated with the initiation and development of lung cancer. Despite the fact that the bacterial biomass in the lungs is lower than that in the intestinal tract, emerging evidence indicates that the lung is colonized by a diverse array of microbes. However, there is limited knowledge regarding the role of dysbiosis of the lung microbiota in the progression of lung cancer. In this review, we summarize the current information about the relationship between the microbiome and lung cancer. The objective is to provide an overview of the core composition of the microbiota in lung cancer as well as the role of specific dysbiosis of the lung microbiota in the progression of lung cancer and treatment of the disease.

Abstract:ABSTRACT A study was conducted on 13 Friesian-Zebu crossbred calves, the ages of which lie between 6 and 18 months, to investigate the kinetics of IFN-γ release in the peripheral blood following Bacille Calmete Guerine (BCG) vaccination. After being screened for bovine tuberculosis (BTB), the calves were vaccinated with 1 mL inoculums containing 6 × 106 CFU of BCG. The level of IFN-γ in the peripheral blood was measured two times before vaccination and seven times after vaccination, using a sandwich ELISA. The kinetics of IFN-γ post vaccination presented itself in three phases: rising, falling, and steady phases. The concentration of IFN-γ, before and after vaccination, both in stimulated and non-stimulated samples, was statistically significant (P<0.01). Strong positive correlation (r = 0.86) was recorded between the levels of IFN-γ release in avian PPD- and bovine PPD-stimulated samples. Of the total 13 calves, 11 (84.6%) reacted positively to tuberculin inoculation 15 weeks post vaccination. It is concluded that the IFN-γ rises immediately after BCG vaccination, reaching its peak two weeks post vaccination, and then declines gradually in the following weeks. The strong positive reaction of calves to tuberculin inoculation 15 weeks post vaccination showed the capability of BCG in causing the release of IFN-γ in the peripheral blood, indicating its role in protection against infection with Mycobacterium bovis in calves.

Abstract:When two similar pictures, overlapping but slightly displaced, were projected on a screen in alternation, apparent movement could be seen. How similar must successive pictures be to give apparent movement? This is the 'correspondence problem'. Manipulations of the local and global correspondences between pictures included motion phenomena such as reversed apparent movement; a four-stroke oscillatory cycle which gave an illusion of continuous motion in one direction; edges defined by texture, stereoscopic depth, or flicker, kinetic edges; and wave motion. It was concluded that human motion perception may comprise two separate mechanisms. Local point-by-point correlations between pictures are detected by a relatively peripheral system, probably based on directonally selective neural units. More subtle global correspondences are analysed by a more cognitive system which extracts edges before it process motion.

Abstract:Lung cancer has the highest mortality rate among all cancers worldwide. The 5-year overall survival rate for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is estimated at around 26%, whereas for small cell lung cancer (SCLC), the survival rate is only approximately 7%. This disease places a significant financial and psychological burden on individuals worldwide. The symbiotic microbiota in the human body has been significantly associated with the occurrence, progression, and prognosis of various diseases, such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and cystic fibrosis. Studies have demonstrated that respiratory symbiotic microorganisms and their metabolites play a crucial role in modulating immune function and contributing to the pathophysiology of lung cancer through their interactions with the host. In this review, we provide a comprehensive overview of the microbial characteristics associated with lung cancer, with a focus on the respiratory tract microbiota from different locations, including saliva, sputum, bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), bronchial brush samples, and tissue. We describe the respiratory tract microbiota's biodiversity characteristics by anatomical region, elucidating distinct pathological features, staging, metastasis, host chromosomal mutations, immune therapies, and the differentiated symbiotic microbiota under the influence of environmental factors. Our exploration investigates the intrinsic mechanisms linking the microbiota and its host. Furthermore, we have also provided a comprehensive review of the immune mechanisms by which microbiota are implicated in the development of lung cancer. Dysbiosis of the respiratory microbiota can promote or inhibit tumor progression through various mechanisms, including DNA damage and genomic instability, activation and regulation of the innate and adaptive immune systems, and stimulation of epithelial cells leading to the upregulation of carcinogenesis-related pathways.

Abstract:Commensal microbiota has emerged as an essential biomarker and regulator of both tumorigenesis and response to cancer therapy. However, our current knowledge about microbiota in cancer has been largely limited to intestinal microbiota. As a mucosal organ harboring one of the largest surface areas in the body, the lung is exposed to a variety of microbes through inhalation and micro-aspiration, and is colonized by a diverse bacterial community in both physiological and pathological conditions. Importantly, increasing evidence has linked the lung microbiome to cancer development. Studies in lung cancer patients and mouse models have revealed tumor-associated dysregulation of the local microbiome in the lung, which in turn impacts cancer progression by shaping the tumor microenvironment and modulating the activity of tumor-infiltrating immune cells. These findings not only provide novel mechanistic insight into the biology of lung cancer but also shed light on new therapeutic targets and strategies for lung cancer prevention and treatment. The goal of this review is to discuss the key findings, remaining questions, and future directions in this new and exciting field.

Abstract:The microbiota is increasingly recognized as a critical player in cancer onset and progression and response to cancer chemotherapy treatment. In recent years, several preclinical and clinical studies have evidenced the involvement of microbiota in lung cancer, one of the world's deadliest cancers. However, the mechanisms by which the microbiota can impact this type of cancer and patient survival and response to treatments remain poorly investigated. In this review, the peculiarities of the gut and lung microbial ecosystems have been highlighted, and recent findings illustrating the possible mechanisms underlying the microbiota-lung cancer interaction and the host immune response have been discussed. In addition, the mucosal immune system has been identified as a crucial communication frame to ease interactive dynamics between the immune system and the microbiota. Finally, the use of specific next-generation intestinal probiotic strains in counteracting airway diseases has been evaluated. We believe that restoring homeostasis and the balance of bacterial microflora should become part of the routine of integrated cancer interventions, using probiotics, prebiotics, and postbiotics, and promoting a healthy diet and lifestyle.

Abstract:The past several years have provided a more profound understanding of the role of microbial species in the lung. The respiratory tract is a delicate ecosystem of bacteria, fungi, parasites, and viruses. Detecting microbial DNA, pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs), and metabolites in sputum is poised to revolutionize the early diagnosis of lung cancer. The longitudinal monitoring of the lung microbiome holds the potential to predict treatment response and side effects, enabling more personalized and effective treatment options. However, most studies into the lung microbiota have been observational and have not adequately considered the impact of dietary intake and air pollutants. This gap makes it challenging to establish a direct causal relationship between environmental exposure, changes in the composition of the microbiota, lung carcinogenesis, and tumor progression. A holistic understanding of the lung microbiota that considers both diet and air pollutants may pave the way to improved prevention and management strategies for lung cancer.

Abstract:PurposeHuman microbiota comprises of a variety of organisms ranging from bacterial species to viruses, fungi, and protozoa which are present on the epidermal and mucosal barriers of the body. It plays a key role in health and survival of the host by regulation of the systemic functions. Its apparent functions in modulation of the host immune system, inducing carcinogenesis and regulation of the response to the cancer therapy through a variety of mechanisms such as bacterial dysbiosis, production of genotoxins, pathobionts, and disruption of the host metabolism are increasingly becoming evident.MethodsDifferent electronic databases such as PubMed, Google Scholar, and Web of Science were searched for relevant literature which has been reviewed in this article.ResultsCharacterization of the microbiome particularly gut microbiota, understanding of the host–microbiota interactions, and its potential for therapeutic exploitation are necessary for the development of novel anticancer therapeutic strategies with better efficacy and lowered off-target side effects.ConclusionIn this review, the role of microbiota is explained in carcinogenesis, mechanisms of microbiota-mediated carcinogenesis, and role of gut microbiota in modulation of cancer therapy.

Abstract:Breast cancer-related mortality remains high worldwide, despite tremendous advances in diagnostics and therapeutics; hence, the quest for better strategies for disease management, as well as the identification of modifiable risk factors, continues. With recent leaps in genomic technologies, microbiota have emerged as major players in most cancers, including breast cancer. Interestingly, microbial alterations have been observed with some of the established risk factors of breast cancer, such as obesity, aging and periodontal disease. Higher levels of estrogen, a risk factor for breast cancer that cross-talks with other risk factors such as alcohol intake, obesity, parity, breastfeeding, early menarche and late menopause, are also modulated by microbial dysbiosis. In this review, we discuss the association between known breast cancer risk factors and altered microbiota. An important question related to microbial dysbiosis and cancer is the underlying mechanisms by which alterations in microbiota can support cancer progression. To this end, we review the involvement of microbial metabolites as effector molecules, the modulation of the metabolism of xenobiotics, the induction of systemic immune modulation, and altered responses to therapy owing to microbial dysbiosis. Given the association of breast cancer risk factors with microbial dysbiosis and the multitude of mechanisms altered by dysbiotic microbiota, an impaired microbiome is, in itself, an important risk factor.
Supramolecular effects on the dynamics of radicals in MFI zeolites: a direct EPR investigation.

Abstract:Photolysis of the supramolecular complexes (dibenzyl ketones@ZSM-5) produced supramolecular complexes of benzyl radicals@ZSM-5, which were directly detected by CW-EPR spectroscopy, and provided information on the dynamics of the radicals. The lifetimes of the radicals increased as the group X attached to the carbon atom at the radical center increases from X = H (t(1/2) ca. 2 min) to X = (CH(2))(4)CH(3) (t(1/2) > 200 min). In addition, line broadening of the EPR signal was observed as the group X increases. Experiments involving cation-exchanged zeolites (MZSM-5; M = Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs) showed a strong dependence of the radical lifetime on the size of the cation (t(1/2) ca. 10 min for Li and t(1/2) > 200 min for Cs). The results are discussed in terms of supramolecular steric effects on the radical-radical reactions in the zeolite supercages.

Abstract:Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death. Over the past 5–10 years lung cancer outcomes have significantly improved in part due to better treatment options including immunotherapy and molecularly targeted agents. Unfortunately, the majority of lung cancer patients do not enjoy durable responses to these new treatments. Seminal research demonstrated the importance of the gut microbiome in dictating responses to immunotherapy in melanoma patients. However, little is known regarding how other sites of microbiota in the human body affect tumorigenesis and treatment responses. The lungs were traditionally thought to be a sterile environment; however, recent research demonstrated that the lung contains its own dynamic microbiota that can influence disease and pathophysiology. Few studies have explored the role of the lung microbiome in lung cancer biology. In this review article, we discuss the links between the lung microbiota and cancer, with particular focus on immune responses, metabolism and strategies to target the lung microbiome for cancer prevention.

Abstract:Gut microbiota interacts with host epithelial cells and regulates many physiological functions such as genetics, epigenetics, metabolism of nutrients, and immune functions. Dietary factors may also be involved in the etiology of colorectal cancer (CRC), especially when an unhealthy diet is consumed with excess calorie intake and bad practices like smoking or consuming a great deal of alcohol. Bacteria including Fusobacterium nucleatum, Enterotoxigenic Bacteroides fragilis (ETBF), and Escherichia coli (E. coli) actively participate in the carcinogenesis of CRC. Gastrointestinal tract with chronic inflammation and immunocompromised patients are at high risk for CRC progression. Further, the gut microbiota is also involved in Geno-toxicity by producing toxins like colibactin and cytolethal distending toxin (CDT) which cause damage to double-stranded DNA. Specific microRNAs can act as either tumor suppressors or oncogenes depending on the cellular environment in which they are expressed. The current review mainly highlights the role of gut microbiota in CRC, the mechanisms of several factors in carcinogenesis, and the role of particular microbes in colorectal neoplasia.

Abstract:Humans depend on our commensal bacteria for nutritive, immune-modulating, and metabolic contributions to maintenance of health. However, this commensal community exists in careful balance that, if disrupted, enters dysbiosis; this has been shown to contribute to the pathogenesis of colon, gastric, esophageal, pancreatic, laryngeal, breast, and gallbladder carcinomas. This development is closely tied to host inflammation, which causes and is aggravated by microbial dysbiosis and increases vulnerability to pathogens. Advances in sequencing technology have increased our ability to catalog microbial species associated with various cancer types across the body. However, defining microbial biomarkers as cancer predictors presents multiple challenges, and existing studies identifying cancer-associated bacteria have reported inconsistent outcomes. Combining metabolites and microbiome analyses can help elucidate interactions between gut microbiota, metabolism, and the host. Ultimately, understanding how gut dysbiosis impacts host response and inflammation will be critical to creating an accurate picture of the role of the microbiome in cancer.

Abstract:The histological lesions of cerebral senescence are varied. Some, like congophil angiopathy, are specific to pathological ageing while others, such as neurofibrillary degeneration or senile plaques, are common to all senescence processes. All these lesions reflect disorders in neuron metabolism and synaptic function. Concomitant biochemical disturbances indicate perturbations in neurotransmitter systems with decreased activity, and these are instrumental to the pathogenesis of the clinical symptoms observed in cerebral ageing. All these changes occurring during senescence seem to result from disturbances in cerebral metabolism the triggering factor of which has yet to be discovered.

Abstract:Introduction: The lower respiratory tract microbiome is widely studied to pinpoint microbial dysbiosis of diversity or abundance that is linked to a number of chronic respiratory illnesses. However, it is vital to clarify how the microbiome, through the release of microbial metabolites, impacts lung health and oncogenesis. Methods: In order to discover the powerful correlations between microbial metabolites and disease, we collected, under electronic bronchoscopy examinations, samples of paired bronchoalveolar lavage fluids (BALFs) from tumor-burden lung segments and ipsilateral non-tumor sites from 28 lung cancer participants, further performing metagenomic sequencing, short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) metabolomics, and multiomics analysis to uncover the potential correlations of the microbiome and SCFAs in lung cancer. Results: In comparison to BALFs from normal lung segments of the same participant, those from lung cancer burden lung segments had slightly decreased microbial diversity in the lower respiratory tract. With 18 differentially prevalent microbial species, including the well-known carcinogens Campylobacter jejuni and Nesseria polysaccharea , the relative species abundance in the lower respiratory tract microbiome did not significantly differ between the two groups. Additionally, a collection of commonly recognized probiotic metabolites called short-chain fatty acids showed little significance in either group independently but revealed a strong predictive value when using an integrated model by machine learning. Multiomics also discovered particular species related to SCFAs, showing a positive correlation with Brachyspira hydrosenteriae and a negative one with Pseudomonas at the genus level, despite limited detection in lower airways. Of note, these distinct microbiota and metabolites corresponded with clinical traits that still required confirmation. Conclusions: Further analysis of metagenome functional capacity revealed that genes encoding environmental information processing and metabolism pathways were enriched in the lower respiratory tract metagenomes of lung cancer patients, further supporting the oncogenesis function of various microbial species by different metabolites. These findings point to a potent relationship between particular components of the integrated microbiota-metabolites network and lung cancer, with implications for screening and diagnosis in clinical settings.

Abstract:Lung microbiota and gut microbiota are closely related to lung cancer. Studies have shown that the dysbiosis, i.e., the significantly altered composition and structure of gut and lung microbiota, usually occurs in patients with lung cancer. With the introduction of "Gut-Lung Axis", an increasing attention has been paid to the close relationship between the lung and gut microbiota in human body. A deeper insight into this relationship would facilitate understanding the mechanisms behind the carcinogenesis and development of lung cancer. This article summarizes the composition of lung and gut microbiota in patients with lung cancer and the possible interaction mechanisms, highlighting the importance of the immune system in the Gut-Lung Axis.
