Abstract:This study analyzed early childhood preservice teachers' specific components of self-efficacy to provide a more exhaustive comprehension of the relationships among STEM self-efficacy, pedagogical belief, and the self-reported need for professional development (PD). The participants were undergraduate or graduate preservice teachers recruited from the early childhood education department of a university in Taiwan. The research used instruments including the Teacher STEM Self-efficacy Scale, Teacher STEM Pedagogical Belief Scale, and Need for PD Scale to collect the data. In total, 150 preservice preschool teachers completed the survey. MANOVA and structural equation modeling were used to analyze the data. The results revealed that preservice teachers' scores on STEM self-efficacy and the three components of self-efficacy were positively correlated with their STEM pedagogical beliefs and self-reported need for PD. Furthermore, affective attitude predicted teachers' need for PD directly or indirectly through STEM pedagogical belief. In addition, the result indicated that STEM pedagogical belief acted as an intermediary in the association between the two components of self-efficacy ("cognitive concept" and "affective attitude") and the self-reported need for PD. However, STEM pedagogical belief cannot mediate the relationship between the "equipped skill" component of self-efficacy and the self-reported need for PD. Preservice preschool teachers who had STEM teaching experience, reported interests in STEM, or participated in STEM-related activities had higher levels of STEM self-efficacy in terms of cognitive concept, affective attitude, and equipped skill. Based on these findings, the researchers provide suggestions for future research and practical implications in teacher development program.

Development and validation of the professional identity scale for preservice early children teachers in China

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to explore the components of preservice early childhood teachers' professional identity in China and to develop a valid and reliable scale to measure the level of preservice early childhood teachers' professional identity. To identify the factors that constitute preservice early childhood teachers' professional identity, 13 subscales and 62 preliminary items were extracted through literature analysis and in-depth interviews. A Delphi survey was conducted to verify the appropriateness of the items by experts, and exploratory factor analysis and reliability analysis were conducted to determine the final five components and 33 items. The final item of the preservice early childhood teacher professional identity Scale was used to test the item favorability, validity, and reliability. The results of the item validity analysis showed that all items met the assumption of normality and showed good item discrimination. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was conducted to verify validity, and the model fit of the scale (RMSEA .059) was found to be adequate. In addition, the standardization coefficient (.636 or higher) and average variance extracted (AVE) values of each construct's convergent validity were checked and verified through the covariance correlation between the discriminant validity components. Due to the high correlation of the constructs, multicollinearity among the constructs was tested to confirm their independence. The factor reliability of the scale is more than .867, and the total item reliability is .964, which is very high. The preservice early childhood teachers' professional identity scale developed in this study proved to be a valid and reliable scale to measure the level of preservice early childhood teachers' professional identity in various training programs in China.
Limits of coherent supercontinuum generation in normal dispersion fibers

Abstract:We study the largely unexplored transition between coherent and noise-seeded incoherent continuum generation in all-normal dispersion (ANDi) fibers and show that highly coherent supercontinua with spectral bandwidths of one octave can be generated with long pump pulses of up to 1.5 ps duration, corresponding to soliton orders of up to N=600. In terms of N, this corresponds to an approximately 50 times increase of the coherent regime compared to anomalous dispersion pumping. In the transition region between coherent and incoherent spectral broadening, we observe the manifestation of nonlinear phenomena that we term incoherent cloud formation and incoherent optical wave breaking, which lead to a gradual or instantaneous coherence collapse of supercontimuum (SC) spectral components, respectively. The role played by stimulated Raman scattering and parametric four-wave mixing during SC generation in ANDi fibers is shown to be more extensive than previously recognized: their nonlinear coupling contributes to the suppression of incoherent dynamics at short pump pulse durations, while it is responsible for non-phase-matched parametric amplification of noise observed in the long pulse regime. We further discuss the dependence of SC coherence on fiber design, and present basic experimental verifications for our findings using single-shot detection of SC spectra generated by picosecond pulses. This work outlines both the further potential as well as the limitations of broadband coherent light source development for applications such as metrology, nonlinear imaging, and ultrafast photonics, among others.

Abstract:Support from teachers is essential to students' career preparation and planning, but few instruments assess their career-related support. We describe the development and validation of the Career-related Teacher Support Scale (CRTSS) among Chinese technical college students (N = 1674). Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses indicate: (a) three types of perceived career-related teacher support; (b) best fit for a bi-factor model with a general factor and three sub-factors, with (c) the general factor explaining more common variance than sub-factors; (d) measurement invariance across genders; (e) good reliability and validity. Implications for researchers, policy makers, teachers, and students are discussed.

Abstract:Journal of Educational Computing Research, Ahead of Print. In the context of digital technologies, computational thinking (CT) is considered a key competence of primary school teachers. However, assessment tools to measure in-service teachers' CT competence are rare. The current study explains the design, development, and validation of a scale to determine the in-service teachers' mastery level of their Computational Thinking Competence (CTC) in the Chinese context. The validity and reliability of the scale have been studied by conducting exploratory factor analysis (EFA), confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and calculating internal consistency coefficients. The sample of this study consisted of 631 in-service teachers from different Chinese primary schools (EFA N = 189; CFA N = 442). The 31-item scale mirrors five factors: cognitive knowledge of CT, practices and skills of CT, attitudes and perspectives of CT, CT teaching design, and CT teaching implementation. The discussion of the results looks at the future use of the CT scale in Chinese educational settings that mirror a specific national education policy, talent demand, and educational culture.

Abstract:This study was dedicated to developing the Scale of Mathematics Teachers’ Technology Integration (SMTTI), a comprehensive instrument designed to assess the competencies of primary mathematics teachers in integrating digital technologies. The research encompassed data collection through a web-based questionnaire distributed to mathematics teachers across Chongqing, China. Both exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were conducted to determine the SMTTI's efficacy as a measurement tool. These analyses established the robust reliability and validity of the SMTTI, affirming its effectiveness as an instrument for assessing the technology integration capabilities of mathematics teachers. The scale exhibited excellent psychometric properties, characterized by strong factor loadings, high internal consistency, and good model fit indices. The SMTTI advances educational technology research by providing a nuanced self-efficacy assessment tool that aligns with the emergent needs of post-pandemic education environments. Its distinctiveness lies in its empirical foundation and tailored approach to evaluating primary mathematics teachers’ self-efficacy for technology integration. The scale fills a critical gap in the existing literature by delivering a context-specific tool designed for the post-digital transition in educational practice, aiding in the formulation of targeted professional development programs and policy making. This addresses a need for updated instruments in the field, complementing the self-reported surveys focusing on practical application and current educational demands. A scale for measuring teacher leadership in early childhood education in China: Development and validation

Abstract:This article describes the development of a teacher leadership scale (TLS) that can be utilized in early childhood education in China. A mixed methods research design was developed to meet the research aim, and both qualitative and quantitative data on the perceptions of teacher leadership from both middle leaders (i.e. vice-principal, key stage coordinator, subject leader) and classroom teachers were collected. In the qualitative study, semi-structured interviews with seven middle leaders and seven classroom teachers were conducted. The qualitative findings were then used for item pool generation in a quantitative study to create the TLS in four stages of development. The TLS questionnaire was distributed to 175 respondents and then to a further 419 respondents for exploratory factor analysis. The scale was further validated by confirmatory factor analysis with another 597 respondents. Its concurrent validity was also examined: teacher leadership was found to be positively associated with job satisfaction and the principal’s authority openness. The article demonstrates that a four-factor model of teacher leadership as follows is psychometrically sound: (a) leading teaching and professional development; (b) characteristics of teacher leaders; (c) participating in school-wide decision-making; and (d) diversity and continuous improvement.

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to develop and validate an instrument for measuring Chinese Chemistry Teachers' Perceived Self-Efficacy towards Chemistry Core Competencies. Based on the notion of the 2017 Senior High School Chemistry Curriculum Standards, the initial instrument consisted of 20 items in five CCCs as the distinct constructs were developed. An expert panel conducted content and face validity during the developmental phase. During the measurement phase, data were collected and analyzed from 210 chemistry teachers, including pre-service and in-service teachers at a university-government-school (UGS) initiative, to provide the construct validity of the initial instrument. Item analysis, exploratory factor analysis, and confirmatory factor analysis were employed to confirm the convergent and discriminant validity and reliability of the final instrument with 15 items evenly allocating in the five CCCs (macroscopic identification and microscopic analysis, changes and equilibrium, evidence-based reasoning and modeling, scientific inquiry and innovation, and scientific attitudes and social responsibility). Concurrent validity was further provided for the instrument by examining the mean differences among teacher demographic groups. The result showed that teachers' self-efficacy varied with professional stages, years of teaching experiences, and school district types, but not with gender. This study provides a thorough process of developing and validating an instrument for teacher self-efficacy in a specific subject domain. The valid and reliable instrument could benefit global teacher education researchers and teacher professional learning programs.

Unfortunately, teacher professional development for integrative STEM education anchored by engineering design has been lacking. This study attempts to integrate STEM and TPACK framework as a means to advance the state of affairs. In particular, a STEM TPACK survey was created and validated in this study. The exploratory factor analysis indicates that the four factors, i.e. the technological pedagogical science knowledge, technological pedagogical mathematics knowledge, technological pedagogical engineering knowledge and integrative STEM can be identified. The regression analysis indicates that the three TPACK factors can predict the teachers' integrative STEM efficacy. In addition, teachers who have experienced teaching STEM classes are generally more efficacious in their STEM TPACK knowledge. Overall, the study indicates that teachers' TPACK are associated with their efficacy in implementing STEM education. This implies that it is important to expound further teacher professional development efforts using the TPACK framework, and the inclusion of mobile apps could be important. Abstract:Besides teachers' professional knowledge, their self-efficacy is a crucial aspect in promoting students' scientific reasoning (SR). However, because no measurement instrument has yet been published that specifically refers to self-efficacy beliefs regarding the task of teaching SR, we adapted the Science Teaching Efficacy Belief Instrument (STEBI) accordingly, resulting in the Teaching Scientific Reasoning Efficacy Beliefs Instrument (TSR-EBI). While the conceptual framework of the TSR-EBI is comparable to that of the STEBI in general terms, it goes beyond it in terms of specificity, acknowledging the fact that teaching SR requires very specific knowledge and skills that are not necessarily needed to the same extent for promoting other competencies in science education. To evaluate the TSR-EBI's psychometric quality, we conducted two rounds of validation. Both samples ( N 1 = 114; N 2 = 74) consisted of pre-service teachers enrolled in university master's programs in Germany. The collected data were analyzed by applying Rasch analysis and known-group comparisons. In the course of an analysis of the TSR-EBI's internal structure, we found a 3-category scale to be superior to a 5-category structure. The person and item reliability of the scale proved to be satisfactory. Furthermore, during the second round of validation, it became clear that the results previously found for the 3-category scale were generally replicable across a new (but comparable) sample, which clearly supports the TSR-EBI's psychometric quality. Moreover, in terms of test-criterion relationships, the scale was also able to discriminate between groups that are assumed to have different levels of self-efficacy regarding teaching SR. Nonetheless, some findings also suggest that the scale might benefit from having the selection of individual items reconsidered (despite acceptable item fit statistics). On balance, however, we believe that the TSR-EBI has the potential to provide valuable insights in future studies regarding factors that influence teachers' self-efficacy, such as their professional experiences, prior training, or perceived barriers to effective teaching.

Abstract:Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) influence almost every aspect of our daily lives. However, despite the high demand for STEM occupational talent, the STEM pipeline continues leaking, with less than one-sixth of high school students pursuing STEM majors and only 50% of entering STEM college majors matriculating into STEM fields. Science identity has been identified as the most powerful predictor of high school students pursuing an undergraduate STEM major as reported by Chang (Machine learning approach to predicting STEM college major choice, American Educational Research Association (AERA), San Francisco, 2020). Though the construct is gaining lots of attention, it remains largely ill-defined, not operationalized at the high school level, and not based upon traditional identity theory. The purpose of this study was to develop a valid and reliable instrument that measures high school students' science identity, the Science Identity (SciID) Scale. Subject experts and a small group of high school students provided content validation for the proposed scale. Exploratory factor analysis revealed an optimal two-factor solution, reflecting the traditional two-dimensions of identity theory: Exploration and Commitment. Cronbach's alpha revealed good internal consistency for both factors. Finally, structural equation modeling confirmed the convergent validity of the instrument with the external variables of science achievement and science career interest. Furthermore, the divergent validity between science identity and science self-concept was also confirmed. Initial results indicate that the SciID Scale is a valid and reliable instrument that accurately measures a high school student's standing on this construct. The soundness of this instrument will enable policy makers and practitioners to design more effective intervention programs aimed at cultivating high school students' science identity.

Abstract:Introduction Teacher identity (TI) is a crucial aspect to pre-service physical education teachers (PPETs) to becoming high quality teachers and plays an important role in their career choice. Thus, a deep understanding of their TI may help improve the quality of future PE teachers. This study aimed to provide further evidence of reliability and validity for Preservice Physical Education Teacher’s Teacher Identity Scale (PPET-TI scale). Methods The study went through a three-stage development process: (a) examining the content validity of original scale; (b) data collection using a sample of student teachers in physical education; (c) re-test the reliability and validity of the scale developed by Zhang. Results and Discussion After having re-examined the content validity, the domain of affects was deleted. The modified scale then consisted of the three domains (i.e., value and expectation, perceived confidence of teaching PE, and professional growth). A total of 944 physical education student teachers in China participated in the study. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was employed to investigate the construct validity, the results suggested the data did not fit the original model. After the unfitted item was excluded. All CFA fit indices were within the acceptable range. Reliability of the scale was then examined by calculating G-C alphas. The alpha values were within the acceptable range. The modified model was reliable and valid. The revalidation of the scale provided more us with a scale that could produce reliable and valid score measuring PPETs’ TI.

Abstract:Abstract Background China has great student participation in STEM education. Chinese society has a progressive and positive attitude towards STEM as it is considered to provide more opportunities in life. Teachers play a vital role in the success of any STEM program in K-12 schools. However, teachers are facing instructional challenges because of the interdisciplinary nature of the STEM curriculum and the current typical school structure. The success of the STEM programs depends on teachers’ beliefs and their knowledge in adapting to instructional implementation of STEM concepts. Results The data ( n = 216) was collected from STEM primary and secondary teachers from 25 provinces in mainland China. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was applied, and Pearson’s correlation analysis was used to examine the correlation between Chinese STEM teachers’ beliefs, knowledge, implementation, and the intrinsic challenges of STEM education; t tests and analysis of variance (ANOVA) were performed to ascertain whether there were differences. The structural equation model (SEM) was applied to identify interrelationships. The results indicated that Chinese STEM teachers encounter higher-level intrinsic challenges to instructional implementations based on their beliefs and knowledge. Teachers who utilize their experience of teaching science as their main discipline and then attempt to integrate STEM using mathematics and engineering are likely to encounter higher-level intrinsic challenges in implementation. Conclusion The intrinsic challenges perceived by Chinese teachers in the practice of STEM education can be predicted by their beliefs and knowledge base. Teachers who understand the nature and pedagogy of STEM education are more likely to encounter lower-level intrinsic challenges of STEM teaching, while teachers who utilize their main discipline when conducting integrated STEM learning activities through modeling based on science, technology, engineering, and mathematical problem situations are more likely to encounter higher-level intrinsic challenges. This study also reveals that there are some significant differences in the level of STEM teachers’ beliefs, knowledge base, instructional practice, and their intrinsic challenges based on their teaching grade, seniority, and experience of STEM training and teaching.

Development and validation of the secondary mathematics teachers’ TPACK scale: A study in the Chinese context

Abstract:This study aimed to develop and validate the secondary mathematics teachers’ technological pedagogical and content knowledge (TPACK) scale (SMTTS) to assess the knowledge domains of TPACK framework among secondary mathematics teachers in China. SMTTS was designed to be subject-oriented and culturally relevant, addressing the specific needs and context of mathematics education in China. Data were collected using a web-based questionnaire from secondary mathematics teachers in Chongqing Jiulongpo District. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were conducted to assess the reliability and validity of the scale. The findings demonstrated that SMTTS exhibited strong reliability and validity, supporting its use as a robust measurement tool for assessing secondary mathematics teachers’ TPACK. The scale demonstrated good psychometric properties, including satisfactory factor loadings, internal consistency, and model fit indices. The development of SMTTS contributes to the field by providing a precise and reliable instrument that can inform the design of targeted professional development programs and guide policy decisions regarding technology integration in mathematics education. This study has theoretical and practical implications. SMTTS addresses the need for a subject-specific and culturally relevant assessment tool for measuring TPACK in mathematics education. It acknowledges mathematics teachers’ unique challenges in integrating digital technologies into their instructional practices. The scale’s development and validation process incorporated considerations of the Chinese educational context, enhancing its relevance for practitioners and researchers in China. SMTTS can facilitate the identification of areas for improvement in teachers’ TPACK and guide the implementation of tailored interventions and support initiatives.

Abstract:We developed and validated an instrument, the Teacher Self-efficacy for Teaching Students with ASD Inclusive Early Childhood Classrooms Scale : TSE-ASDI/EC, to determine teachers' self-efficacy for teaching students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in inclusive early childhood classrooms. We engaged in literature and expert reviews followed by cognitive pre-testing with pre-service and in-service early childhood teachers. Next, we employed a series of analytic techniques to examine the factor structure, reliability, and relationships among the dimensions of the instrument for the entire sample and by subgroups. We provide evidence for validity based on test content, response process, internal structure of the instrument, and relations to other variables. This led to a unidimensional, 16-item scale to measure general education teachers' self-efficacy for educating students with ASD in inclusive early childhood classrooms. Based on these findings we discuss implications for research and practice.

Abstract:Professional identity has become a central topic in teacher education research and a crucial factor in shaping teachers’ self-perception and perspectives on various aspects of their profession, including teacher roles, scholarly research, curriculum design, classroom instruction, instructional methods, and strategies, as well as their interactions within the educational context. Despite the considerable scholarly interest in teacher identity development, relatively few studies have considered how to measure teacher professional identity. This study developed and validated a new measurement of professional identity among Chinese pre-service teachers from an English language education program. A total of 560 pre-service teachers majoring in English language education were invited to participate in a survey and 542 questionnaires were deemed valid and subjected to analysis. Through this analysis, a scale with 17 items was developed, focusing on three different dimensions: professional self-efficacy, career commitment, and professional knowledge. After excluding items with a relatively poor correlation with factor loading, the final scale consisted of 13 items. The results showed that the developed scale has relatively good reliability (α = 0.939) and structural validity (χ 2 /df = 2.46, p < .001, CFI = 0.978, TLI = 0.971, SRMR = 0.033, RMSEA (90% CI) = 0.071 0.054, 0.089). This study may provide a quantitative instrument for future research to measure professional identity among pre-service teachers, both in Chinese and other contexts.

Since engineering education research in K-12 is still in its infancy, there is limited empirical evidence related to how teachers integrate engineering concepts into their classrooms. To assess the quality of teachers’ engineering teaching practices, teaching self-efficacy can be used as an indicator of their instructional practices because teaching efficacy beliefs are often associated with greater use of student-oriented instructional practices, increased teacher effort, and other positive instructional behaviors. Purpose: The main aim of this study was to validate an engineering teaching efficacy beliefs instrument (ETEBI) to measure pre-service elementary teachers’ engineering teaching efficacy beliefs. Design/method : The science teaching efficacy beliefs instrument version B was modified to develop the ETEBI. The instrument was administered to 561 pre-service elementary teachers. A Rasch model analysis and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were conducted on the data obtained from 561 pre-service elementary teachers to provide evidence supporting the validity of the instrument. Results: The Rasch model and CFA suggested a two-factor solution: personal engineering teaching efficacy and engineering teaching outcome expectancy. Also, Cronbach’s coefficient alphas for each subscale were measured to assess the internal consistency of the subscales. Based on the analyses, the study provided evidence supporting the reliability and validity of the ETEBI to assess pre-service elementary teachers’ engineering teaching efficacy. Conclusions: The ETEBI can be confidently utilized to assess pre-service elementary teachers’ engineering teaching efficacy beliefs. It is effective in gauging the current status of their beliefs and/or determining changes in their beliefs as a result of any teacher training and professional development effort.

Abstract:Abstract In this study, issues concerning the design of scales for measuring teacher sense of efficacy (TSE) are first identified with particular attention to the Teacher Sense of Efficacy Scale (TSES). Psychometric issues concerning analysis and reporting of TSE data are subsequently identified. Recommendations are offered about all identified issues, and these recommendations are taken into account when obtaining and analyzing TSE data from Chinese mainland preservice and inservice teachers. Exploratory factor analyses yielded a single factor for both samples as well as for four subgroups within the inservice teacher sample. Results also provided insights about scale design as well as the TSES being limited for capturing the breadth of TSE. Suggestions are made for improvements in the assessment of TSE.

Abstract:Teacher’s unethical professional behaviors affect students’ physical and mental health. Prevention should start with student teachers, but empirical research is lacking in China. This study surveyed over 2,000 student teachers from China to examine the psychometric properties of a student teachers’ unethical professional behavior tendencies scale which revised by primary and secondary school teachers’ unethical professional behavior tendencies scale. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis confirmed that a bi-factor model fit the data best. The final student teachers’ unethical professional behavior tendencies scale comprised four subscales, including a general factor (unethical professional behaviors) and four special factors (perfunctory attitude and carelessness, insults and discrimination, unfairness, and using power for personal gain). The student teachers’ unethical professional behavior tendencies scale correlated negatively with their professional ethical values and positively with perceived frequency of unethical professional behaviors of college teachers around them. The data supported the scale’s measurement invariance across gender, and male student teachers scored significantly higher on unethical professional behavior tendencies than female student teachers. The findings suggest that the student teachers’ unethical professional behavior tendencies scale is a useful instrument for assessing student teachers’ unethical professional behaviors in China.
