This highlights one of the many problems with the terminology “ANCA-associated vasculitis” and the advantages of considering these as separate diseases, particularly within therapeutic trials. We do not think that these data lend any additional support for the use of IVIGs in WG and MPA. Although randomized, double-blind, controlled studies would be needed to determine effectiveness, the available data raise questions as to whether IVIG treatment warrants additional investigation in place of emerging therapies.

Abstract:Breast biopsies are commonly performed for abnormal, usually clustered, calcifications detected by mammography. Calcium phosphate is the predominant form of calcium seen in breast tissue and is frequently associated with malignancy. Calcium oxalate, which can also be present in breast tissue, has been exclusively associated with benign lesions. Thus, if mammography could distinguish calcium phosphate from calcium oxalate, biopsy could be avoided in some patients. Pathologic findings and corresponding mammograms of 55 patients who underwent biopsy for abnormal calcifications were reviewed. The authors evaluated such pathologic features as type of calcification, anatomic location, and association with fibrocystic changes or carcinoma. Mammographically, calcifications were categorized by size, distribution, and morphology, and each was assigned a density rating of low, medium, or high. Of the 55 cases, 41 contained calcium phosphate only, 8 contained calcium oxalate only, and 6 contained both. If only calcium oxalate was present, the calcium was always associated with benign epithelium. Of 47 cases, calcium phosphate was associated with benign breast disease in 28 and with carcinoma in 19. Five of six cases with both calcium phosphate and calcium oxalate contained carcinoma; calcium phosphate was seen in the carcinoma area in all five. Radiologically, calcium phosphate was typically medium to high density, whereas calcium oxalate was characterized as amorphous, low to medium density. Other low-density calcifications were almost always benign, unless pleomorphic in shape. Although further work is necessary to confirm these findings, it appears that, radiologically, low-density, amorphous, calcifications, even if clustered, are associated with benign breast disease, and may represent calcium oxalate. Patients with such calcifications may be managed conservatively.
Effectiveness of the small private online course-based flipped teaching program for enhancing nursing students' self-directed learning ability in the Surgical Nursing course: A practical study

Abstract:Small private online course-based flipped teaching is an innovative hybrid instructional approach that merges online and offline activities, fostering autonomous learning among students prior to class and facilitating the assimilation of knowledge within the confines of the classroom. To determine the effectiveness of the small private online course-based flipped teaching model on undergraduate nursing students' self-directed learning abilities, we performed a practice version of the small private online course-based flipped teaching program as a quasi-experiment, specifically designed for the Surgical Nursing course and assessed its effectiveness in students' self-directed learning abilities. To this end, a total of 264 students from the 2019 nursing major cohort were selected. Three classes comprising 131 students were randomly selected as the experimental group, and three other classes, comprising 133 students, were set as the control group. The results revealed no significant differences in the scores of self-directed learning abilities between the experimental and control groups before the experiment. After the experiment, the average scores on each dimension of the self-directed learning abilities improved significantly, and the final score of the experimental group was higher than that of the control group. The small private online course-based flipped teaching model can promote undergraduate nursing students' self-directed learning abilities, owing to its practicality and feasibility for the selected course.
Nursing students learning transfer from classroom to clinical practice: An integrative review

Abstract:Aim: The aim of this integrative review was to examine the theoretical, qualitative, quantitative and mixed-methods literature focused on how nursing students transfer learning from theory courses into clinical practice. Background: As nursing curriculum aligns with the growing body of nursing knowledge, nursing students continue to develop their knowledge base and skill sets to prepare for future nursing practice. The bulk of this preparation involves developing connections between classroom/lab knowledge and further demonstrating those connections in clinical practice. However, the extant state of evidence on undergraduate nursing students' learning transfer has not yet been synthesized. Design: This integrative review was conducted using the Whittemore and Knafl framework. Review methods: Eight databases were searched in June 2022: MEDLINE, APA PsycInfo, EMBASE, Web of Science, CINAHL, ERIC, Academic Search Complete and Education Research Complete. Literature was included if it focused on undergraduate nursing students who have participated in at least one clinical practicum and reported on learning transfer in clinical settings. Only English-language, peer-reviewed literature was included. Two researchers independently assessed the eligibility of articles at the title-and-abstract level and at the full-text level, followed by an assessment of methodological quality. The Joanna Briggs Institute's critical appraisal checklists were used to assess theoretical papers and literature reviews and the mixed-methods appraisal tool (MMAT) was used to appraise all studies. Reference lists of included articles were searched for additional relevant literature. Reporting followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses statement guidelines. Results: Twenty-eight articles met our inclusion criteria and were included in this review, including 20 qualitative studies, one quantitative study, three mixed-methods studies, three theoretical articles and one integrative review. The results of this review highlighted that numerous facilitators and barriers influence nursing students' ability to transfer learning within clinical learning environments. Facilitators included having knowledgeable and supportive educators and nursing staff, using strategies to promote connections, fostering reflection and aligning theory and practice. Barriers included unclear connections between course content, incongruencies between classroom and practice, lack of nurse role models, lack of real-world applicability and unsupportive nurse educators. Conclusions: The information generated from this integrative review provides evidence about barriers that can be mitigated and facilitators that can be leveraged to facilitate undergraduate nursing students' learning transfer into clinical practice. The findings also highlighted gaps in evidence surrounding the need to understand how nursing students transfer learning from classroom settings to clinical practice settings.
The Effects of Scenario-Based Simulation Course Training on Nurses' Communication Competence and Self-Efficacy: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract:Studies have shown that an underappreciation of the importance of person-centered communication and inappropriate communication training could result in unsatisfactory communication performance from nurses. There are a large number of studies about communication training for nurses, but not so many about communication training in early stages of nursing career. The purpose of this study is to compare the effect of a traditional course versus scenario-based simulation training on nurses' communication competency, communication self-efficacy, and communication performance in discharge planning Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE). A randomized controlled trial was used with a pretest and two posttests. The experimental group underwent the scenario-based simulation course, whereas the control group received the traditional course. A convenience sample of 116 nurses with qualifications ranging from N0 level (novice nurses) to N2 level (competent nurses) in Taiwan's clinical nursing ladder system was recruited from a medical center in northern Taiwan. Analysis of covariance was used to determine between-subjects effects on communication competency and self-efficacy, whereas independent t test and Mann-Whitney U test were used to examine between-subjects effects on learner satisfaction and discharge planning communication performance. Paired t test was used to determine communication self-efficacy. In this study, the nurses and independent raters found scenario-based simulation training more effective than traditional communication course. However, standardized patients reported no significant difference in communication performance between the two groups of nurses. Despite that traditional classroom lectures and simulation-based communication training could both produce enhanced communication competency and self-efficacy among nurses, this study has established that the latter may be better than the former in terms of learner satisfaction and communication performance improvement. Therefore, introduction of simulation-based training to in-service nursing education could enhance nurses' communication performance in clinical practice.

Abstract:<h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Aim</h3><p>The aim of this study was to design a multidisciplinary teaching method that combines game-based learning with a clinical situation–based teaching program and to test learning motivation, learning satisfaction and self-confidence. Background: Research has suggested that game-based learning and clinical situation–based teaching can effectively capture student attention and stimulate student learning motivation as well as increase learning satisfaction and self-confidence. Design: The randomised and experimental design used in this study was a pretest–posttest control group design. Methods: This study recruited participants from a technical college in the north of Taiwan. The experimental group (receiving multidisciplinary teaching) comprised 48 participants and the control group (receiving traditional teaching) comprised 50 participants. Participants took a pretest before the multidisciplinary teaching intervention, received a total of 12 weeks of intervention and then took a posttest within 1 week of the end of the course. These participants completed a questionnaire regarding learning satisfaction, confidence and learning performance. Results: The multidisciplinary teaching intervention improved learning satisfaction (t = 7.36, p <.001), self-confidence (t = 7.34, p <.001) and learning performance (t = 6.66, p <.001). Multidisciplinary teaching interventions can improve learning satisfaction, self-confidence and learning performance among nursing students. Conclusions: Multidisciplinary teaching should be promoted in the context of nursing teaching and students have the multidisciplinary learning.</p>

Abstract:Background Clinical nursing education provides opportunities for students to learn in multiple patient care settings, receive appropriate guidance, and foster the development of clinical competence and professionalism. Nurse preceptors guide students to integrate theory into practice, teach clinical skills, assess clinical competencies, and enhance problem-solving and critical thinking skills. Previous research has indicated that the teaching competencies of nurse preceptors can be transferred to students’ clinical learning to enhance their clinical competencies. Objective This study aimed to develop a clinical teaching blended learning (CTBL) program with the aid of web-based clinical pedagogy (WCP) and case-based learning for nurse preceptors and to examine the effectiveness of the CTBL program on nurse preceptors’ clinical teaching competencies, self-efficacies, attitudes toward web-based learning, and blended learning outcomes. Methods A quasi-experimental single-group pretest and posttest design was adopted. A total of 150 nurse preceptors participated in the CTBL program, which was conducted from September 2019 to December 2019. A set of questionnaires, including the clinical teaching competence inventory, preceptor self-efficacy questionnaire, attitudes toward web-based continuing learning survey, and e-learning experience questionnaire, was used to assess the outcomes before and after the CTBL program. Results Compared with the baseline, the participants had significantly higher total mean scores and subdomain scores for clinical teaching competence (mean 129.95, SD 16.38; P<.001), self-efficacy (mean 70.40, SD 9.35; P<.001), attitudes toward web-based continuing learning (mean 84.68, SD 14.76; P<.001), and blended learning outcomes (mean 122.13, SD 14.86; P<.001) after the CTBL program. Conclusions The CTBL program provides a comprehensive coverage of clinical teaching pedagogy and assessment strategies. The combination of the WCP and case-based approach provides a variety of learning modes to fit into the diverse learning needs of the preceptors. The CTBL program allows the preceptors to receive direct feedback from the facilitators during face-to-face sessions. Preceptors also gave feedback that the web-based workload is manageable. This study provides evidence that the CTBL program increases the clinical teaching competencies and self-efficacies of the preceptors and promotes positive attitudes toward web-based learning and better blended learning outcomes. The health care organization can consider the integration of flexible learning and intellect platforms for preceptorship education.

Abstract:Objective:To probe into effect of nursing practice under different clinical teaching style.Methods:A total of 60 internship nursing undergraduates in wards intensive care unit(ICU) were randomly divided into group A,B and C,20 cases in each,A group used fixed teaching mode,B group cases took turns to teach,C group cases took compound teaching mode(fixed teaching mode in first week,other three weeks take turns teaching).The professionalism,theoretical knowledge,the ability of clinical care and communication and collaboration capacity of nursing students were respectively assessed in the first week and the fourth week,and the practice effect of nursing students were compared among the three groups.Results:in assessment scores of clinical care capacity,communication and collaboration of nursing students between group A and group C in first week(P<0.05);In fourth week,clinical nursing competency assessment score of nursing students in C group was better than that of A group and B group,and that in B group was better than that in group A,communication and collaboration skills assessment scores of nursing students in B and C groups was better than that of group A(P<0.05).Conclusion:The effect of compound teaching mode for internship nursing undergraduates is better than that of pure fixed teaching method and the way of taking turns to teach.
Case-Based Web Learning Versus Face-to-Face Learning: A Mixed-Method Study on University Nursing Students

Abstract:Background: Case-based learning (CBL) is an effective educational method for improving the learning and clinical reasoning skills of students. Advances in e-learning technology have supported the development of the Web-based CBL approach to teaching as an alternative or supplement to the traditional classroom approach. Purpose: This study aims to examine the CBL experience of Hong Kong students using both traditional classroom and Web-based approaches in undergraduate nursing education. This experience is examined in terms of the perceived self-learning ability, clinical reasoning ability, and satisfaction in learning of these students. Methods: A mixture of quantitative and qualitative approaches was adopted. All Year-3 undergraduate nursing students were recruited. CBL was conducted using the traditional classroom approach in Semester 1, and the Web-based approach was conducted in Semester 2. Student evaluations were collected at the end of each semester using a self-report questionnaire. In-depth, focus-group interviews were conducted at the end of Semester 2. Results: One hundred twenty-two students returned their questionnaires. No difference between the face-to-face and Web-based approaches was found in terms of self-learning ability (p = .947), clinical reasoning ability (p = .721), and satisfaction (p = .083). Focus group interview findings complemented survey findings and revealed five themes that reflected the CBL learning experience of Hong Kong students. These themes were (a) the structure of CBL, (b) the learning environment of Web-based CBL, (c) critical thinking and problem solving, (d) cultural influence on CBL learning experience, and (e) student-centered and teacher-centered learning. Conclusions: The Web-based CBL approach was comparable but not superior to the traditional classroom CBL approach. The Web-based CBL experience of these students sheds light on the impact of Chinese culture on student learning behavior and preferences.

Abstract:Objective: This study aims to investigate the application effect of scenario simulation teaching combined with case teaching method in nursing practice teaching, and compare it with traditional nursing practice teaching. Methods: One hundred nursing students from a university in 2019 were selected as the research subjects, and were randomly divided into an experimental group and a control group, with 50 students in each group. The experimental group received nursing practice teaching using scenario simulation teaching combined with case teaching method, while the control group received traditional nursing practice teaching. The effectiveness of the two teaching methods was evaluated through examination scores, clinical competency assessment, non-technical skill level comparison, and student satisfaction survey. Results: The students in the experimental group performed better than those in the control group in terms of examination scores, clinical competency assessment, non-technical skill level, and student satisfaction. Specifically, the excellent rate and passing rate of the examination scores and clinical competency assessment of the experimental group were significantly higher than those of the control group, with statistically significant differences (P<0.05); after the teaching, the non-technical skill level scores of the experimental group were higher than those of the control group (P<0.05); the satisfaction ratings of the experimental group on teaching content, teaching methods, teaching environment, teacher’s teaching style, and teaching resources were significantly higher than those of the control group (P<0.05). Conclusion: Scenario simulation teaching combined with case teaching method has good application effect in nursing practice teaching, which can effectively improve students’ learning performance and clinical competency assessment scores, enhance students’ understanding and application ability of teaching content, and increase students’ learning interest and participation.

Abstract:Aim: The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of modified observation-teaching-discussion pedagogy combined with microteaching on improving the critical thinking ability of nursing interns in China. Methods: Two hundred baccalaureate nursing students practicing in the department of neurosurgery were divided into two groups chronologically, with 100 students per group. The control group received traditional clinical mentoring while their counterparts in the intervention group received mentoring by modified observation teaching discussion pedagogy combined with microteaching. Then, we compared the two groups with respect to theoretical knowledge and nursing operation skills. The Critical Thinking Ability Scale was used to evaluate the critical thinking ability of the two groups of nursing students. Data were analyzed with SPSS 22.0 software. Results: Following the internship, the scores of nurses in the intervention group were significantly higher than those in the control group for theoretical knowledge, technical skills and critical thinking ability ( p < 0.05 for all). Conclusion: The application of modified observation-teaching-discussion pedagogy in combination with microteaching promoted the knowledge, technical skills and critical thinking ability of nursing students in clinical practice.
The effect of a multidimensional teaching strategy on the self-efficacy and critical thinking dispositions of nursing students: A quasi-experimental study

Abstract:Background: Internships in pediatric nursing often reveal that nursing students lack critical thinking dispositions and self-confidence, which are important and necessary for nursing practice. Therefore, preparing nursing students to engage in critical thinking is an important goal for educators. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to explore whether a teaching model combining the 5E learning model and self-efficacy would be effective in enhancing participants' self-efficacy and critical thinking dispositions in a course on child-friendly care. Design: The quasi-experimental method was single-blind, as the study was conducted with two parallel and unequal groups to address the research questions. Setting: Two campuses of a university located in Northern and Southern Taiwan. Participants: Fifty-eight participants completed this study. Methods: Participants completed the pre-test questionnaire in Week 1, after which participants in the experimental group learned via the teaching strategy that combined the 5E learning model and self-efficacy, while participants in the control group were taught the same course via conventional teaching methods. A post-test questionnaire was completed in Week 18. An independent sample t-test was used to determine any mean differences of outcome variables between groups over time. Results: Significant improvements were found in self-efficacy, t (56) = 3.93, p < 0.01, but non-significant results for the outcome of critical thinking disposition t (56) = 0.88, p > 0.05. A t-test was also performed on the four subscales of critical thinking disposition for the two groups, showing that the only difference for overall reflective thinking was statistically significant, t (56) = 2.09, p < 0.05). Conclusions: The multidimensional teaching strategy introduced in this study is more effective than conventional teaching strategies in improving students' self-efficacy and the overall reflective thinking aspect of critical thinking disposition.
Effect of and satisfaction with www.elearnSCI.org for training of nurse students: a submodule pilot study

Abstract:Study design: Interventional training session. Objective: To investigate the effect and satisfaction with didactic training using printed text of a submodule of www.elearnSCI.org for nurse students and to assess the answers of each question. Setting: A Peking University teaching hospital. Methods: Twenty-eight nurse students in two groups (14 in each) were involved. Only group A received a translated print-out of the slides from the 'Nursing management' submodule in www.elearnSCI.org for 1-h self-study before the class. At the beginning of class, both groups were tested using the self assessment questions. Then, a lecture according to the content of this submodule was carried out and afterwards both groups answered the self assessment questions again. Finally, both groups filled in a training course satisfaction questionnaire. Results: At the beginning of the class, the mean score (max 9) of the self assessment in group A was 7.1 ± 1.1, which was significantly higher than that in group B (4.9 ± 1.7, P = 0.001). After the lecture, the mean score of the self assessment in group A had insignificantly increased to 7.4 ± 1.3, whereas in group B it increased significantly to 6.9 ± 0.8 (P < 0.001). The mean score (max 50) of the training course satisfaction questionnaire was 42.8 ± 5.2. Sixty-four percentage of the students indicated that they were very satisfied (overall score ⩾ 42) with the training and no students were unsatisfied (overall score < 30). Conclusion: Self-study and lecture presentation are effective methods for training the content of www.elearnSCI.org to nurse students. The training satisfaction of this submodule within the www.elearnSCI.org is favorable.

Abstract:Objective To integrate small private online course (SPOC) into flipping classroom teaching for nursing core curricula,and to test the effect on self-directed learning ability of nursing students.Methods Two classes totaling 62 nursing students admitted in 2014 were randomly divided into an experimental group (n=32) and a control group(n=30).The former received flipping classroom teaching based on SPOC,while the latter were subjected to traditional classroom teaching,for the core courses of medical nursing,surgical nursing,and nursing fundamentals.The examinations results,and self-directed learning ability between the 2 groups were compared.Results The examinations results,and scores of self-directed learning ability,self-management dimension,and learning motivation dimension in the experimental group were significantly higher than the control group(P＜0.05,P＜0.01);71.88 ％-93.75 ％ of the experimental group students highly approved the positive side of the teaching method they received,and only 6.25％ found it difficult to fit in.Conclusion The flipping classroom teaching mode based on SPOC is better than traditional classroom teaching methods in improving academic performances and self-directed learning abilities of nursing students.
Development and effectiveness of online teaching on practical skills among nursing students: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract:Objective The purpose of this meta-analysis was to assess the effects of online education for practical skills among nursing students. Methods This research was done by searching PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, and Web of Science electronic databases from inception to August 18, 2023, to identify English-language articles. Data extraction, quality assessment, and literature screening were carried out independently by two researchers. The Cochrane risk of bias tool and the Methodological Items for Nonrandomized Studies (MINORS) tool were used to assess the risk of bias of the included studies. Meta-analysis was carried out using Review Manager (RevMan) version 5.3 software. Results Eighteen studies involving 2274 nursing students met the inclusion criteria. Nursing students' skills (SMD = 0.43, 95% CI [0.33, 0.54], P <0.00001), knowledge (SMD = 0.16, 95% CI (0.02, 0.30], P = 0.02), satisfaction (SMD = 0.29, 95% CI (0.10, 0.47], P < 0.01), and confidence (SMD = 0.56, 95% CI [0.29, 0.83], P < 0.0001) were all significantly improved by the online teaching intervention compared with traditional face-to-face instruction. Self-efficacy (SMD = 0.1, 95% CI [-0.13, 0.33], P = 0.41) was also improved, but the difference was not statistically significant. Conclusion Online learning is a novel and efficient approach to teaching practical skills to nursing students. Online education can enhance students' knowledge, skills, confidence, and learning satisfaction, and it is superior to traditional classroom instruction. The findings of this study can serve as a basis for the development of standardized online teaching techniques and assessment metrics.

Abstract:Online learning has become a common means of enhancing face-to-face classroom learning and is at the center of most collaborative, multimedia educational environments. There is some evidence that students' self-regulatory (SR) learning can be facilitated in a web-based learning environment, but studies of the effectiveness of self-directed online courses for post-registration nursing students have been few, and the results have been inconclusive. This study qualitatively examined the ways in which adding an online, asynchronous learning component to a nursing course might facilitate post-registration nursing students' self-regulatory learning. Learners' asynchronous communication on an online bulletin board comprised the qualitative dataset. Content related to their e-learning activities and experiences was extracted and generalized in order to examine the possible effects of this online interaction on SR learning. The themes that emerged indicated that students practiced SR learning skills through their online peer interaction. We propose several strategies for facilitating a self-regulatory learning environment based on these results from a course for post-registration nursing students in Taiwan.
