Abstract:Video games have become a ubiquitous part of demographically diverse cultures. Numerous studies have focused on analyzing the cognitive aspects involved in game playing that could help in providing an optimal gaming experience by improving video game design. To this end, we present a framework for classifying the game player’s expertise level using wearable electroencephalography (EEG) headset. We hypothesize that expert and novice players’ brain activity is different, which can be classified using frequency domain features extracted from EEG signals of the game player. A systematic channel reduction approach is presented using a correlation-based attribute evaluation method. This approach lead us in identifying two significant EEG channels, i.e., AF3 and P7, among fourteen channels available in Emotiv EPOC headset. In particular, features extracted from these two EEG channels contributed the most to the video game player’s expertise level classification. This finding is validated by performing statistical analysis (t-test) over the extracted features. Moreover, among multiple classifiers used, K-nearest neighbor is the best classifier in classifying game player’s expertise level with a classification accuracy of up to 98.04% (without data balancing) and 98.33% (with data balancing).

Abstract:Game platforms have different impacts on player experience in terms of affective states and workloads. By studying these impacts, we can uncover detailed aspects of the gaming experience. Traditionally, understanding player experience has relied on subjective methods, such as self-reported surveys, where players reflect on their experience and effort levels. However, complementing these subjective measures with electroencephalogram (EEG) analysis introduces an objective approach to assessing player experience. In this study, we examined player experiences across PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Meta Quest 2. Using a mixed-methods approach, we merged subjective user assessments with EEG data to investigate brain activity, affective states, and workload during low- and high-stimulation games. We recruited 30 participants to play two games across three platforms. Our findings reveal that there is a statistically significant difference between these three platforms for seven out of nine experience factors. Also, three platforms have different impacts on play experience and brain activity. Additionally, we utilized a linear model to associate player experience aspects such arousal, frustration, and mental workload with different brain regions using EEG data.

Abstract:Fractals, Ahead of Print. The influence of video games on the human brain has been a topic of extensive research and discussion. Video games, characterized by their dynamic and immersive qualities, have demonstrated the capacity to impact diverse cognitive processes. In this study, we conducted a detailed analysis of brain response variations to different genres of computer games, specifically focusing on boring, calm, horror, and funny games. To achieve this, we computed the sample entropy and approximate entropy of electroencephalograms (EEG) signals recorded from participants while they engaged with each type of game. Our findings revealed that EEG signals exhibited the highest complexity during the funny game and the lowest complexity during the calm game. This suggests that the brain is most active when playing the funny game and least active during the calm game. These results provide valuable insights into how different types of video game content can influence brain activity. The methodology employed in this study can be extended to explore brain activity under various conditions, potentially offering a broader understanding of how different stimuli impact cognitive processes. This approach can be useful in examining the effects of various interactive media on brain function and could inform the design of video games and other digital experiences to optimize cognitive engagement and mental well-being.

Abstract:<p>Internet gaming addiction (IGD) is a common disease in teenagers which usually reflects the abnormalities in brain function or structure. Several computational models have been applied to investigate the characteristic of IGD brain networks, for instance, the conception of brain controllability. The primary objective of this study was to explore the relationship between brain controllability and IGD related clinical behaviour. A sample of 101 subjects, including 49 IGD patients and 52 normal controls, were recruited to undergo MR T1 and DTI scanning. Specifically, the MR images were used to generate the white matter connectivity matrix and the morphometry similarity network. The morphometry similarity network was then divided into several communities using modular decomposition. After, average controllability, modal controllability and synchronizability were calculated through measuring the adjacency matrix. The results indicated that the IGD group had greater synchronizability and modal controllability compared to that of the control group, and different morphological-based brain communities had different controllability properties. Furthermore, the addiction demonstrated the mediating effects between nodal or modular brain controllability as well as anxiety. In conclusion, brain controllability could be a potential biomarker of IGD.</p>

Abstract:Background and objective: For the emerging significance of mental stress, various research directives have been established over time to understand better the causes of stress and how to deal with it. In recent years, the rise of video gameplay has been unprecedented, further triggered by the lockdown imposed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Several researchers and organizations have contributed to the practical analysis of the impacts of such extended periods of gameplay, which lacks coordinated studies to underline the outcomes and reflect those in future game designing and public awareness about video gameplay. Investigations have mainly focused on the "gameplay stress" based on physical syndromes. Some studies have analyzed the effects of video gameplay with Electroencephalogram (EEG), Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), etc., without concentrating on the relaxation procedure after video gameplay. Methods: This paper presents an end-to-end stress analysis for video gaming stimuli using EEG. The power spectral density (PSD) of the Alpha and Beta bands is computed to calculate the Beta-to-Alpha ratio (BAR). The Alpha and Beta band power is computed, and the Beta-to-Alpha band power ratio (BAR) has been determined. In this article, BAR is used to denote mental stress. Subjects are chosen based on various factors such as gender, gameplay experience, age, and Body mass index (BMI). EEG is recorded using Scan SynAmps2 Express equipment. There are three types of video gameplay: strategic, puzzle, and combinational. Relaxation is accomplished in this study by using music of various pitches. Two types of regression analysis are done to mathematically model stress and relaxation curve. Brain topography is rendered to indicate the stressed and relaxed region of the brain. Results: In the relaxed state, the subjects have BAR 0.701, which is considered the baseline value. Non-gamer subjects have an average BAR of 2.403 for 1 h of strategic video gameplay, whereas gamers have 2.218 BAR concurrently. After 12 minutes of listening to low-pitch music, gamers achieved 0.709 BAR, which is nearly the baseline value. In comparison to Quartic regression, the 4PL symmetrical sigmoid function performs regression analysis with fewer parameters and computational power. Conclusion: Non-gamers experience more stress than gamers, whereas strategic games stress the human brain more. During gameplay, the beta band in the frontal region is mostly activated. For relaxation, low pitch music is the most useful medium. Residual stress is evident in the frontal lobe when the subjects have listened to high pitch music. Quartic regression and 4PL symmetrical sigmoid function have been employed to find the model parameters of the relaxation curve. Among them, quartic regression performs better in terms of Akaike information criterion (AIC) and R2 measure.

Abstract:Action video gaming (AVG) places sustained cognitive load on various behavioral systems, thus offering new insights into learning-related neural plasticity. This study aims to determine whether AVG experience is associated with resting-state electroencephalogram (rs-EEG) temporal and spatial complexity, and if so, whether this effect is observable across AVG subgenres. Two AVG games – League of Legends (LOL) and Player Unknown’s Battle Grounds (PUBG) that represent two major AVG subgenres – were examined. We compared rs-EEG microstate and omega complexity between LOL experts and non-experts (Experiment 1) and between PUBG experts and non-experts (Experiment 2). We found that the experts and non-experts had different rs-EEG activities in both experiments, thus revealing the adaptive effect of AVG experience on brain development. Furthermore, we also found certain subgenre-specific complexity changes, supporting the recent proposal that AVG should be categorized based on the gaming mechanics of a specific game rather than a generic genre designation.

Abstract:Game playing is an accessible leisure activity. Recently, the World Health Organization officially included gaming disorder in the ICD-11, and studies using several bio-signals were conducted to quantitatively determine this. However, most EEG studies regarding internet gaming disorder (IGD) were conducted in the resting state, and the outcomes appeared to be too inconsistent to identify a general trend. Therefore, this study aimed to use a series of statistical processes with all the existing EEG parameters until the most effective ones to identify the difference between IGD subjects IGD and healthy subjects was determined. Thirty subjects were grouped into IGD (n = 15) and healthy (n = 15) subjects by using the Young's internet addition test (IAT) and the compulsive internet use scale (CIUS). EEG data for 16 channels were collected while the subjects played League of Legends. For the exhaustive search of parameters, 240 parameters were tested in terms of t-test, factor analysis, Pearson correlation, and finally logistic regression analysis. After a series of statistical processes, the parameters from Alpha, sensory motor rhythm (SMR), and MidBeta ranging from the Fp1, C3, C4, and O1 channels were found to be best indicators of IGD symptoms. The accuracy of diagnosis was computed as 63.5–73.1% before cross-validation. The most interesting finding of the study was the dynamics of EEG relative power in the 10–20 Hz band. This EEG crossing phenomenon between IGD and healthy subjects may explain why previous research showed inconsistent outcomes. The outcome of this study could be the referential guide for further investigation to quantitatively assess IGD symptoms.

Abstract:Previous research indicates that individuals with Internet gaming disorder (IGD) show impaired inhibitory control and abnormal EEG/ERP patterns. However, it is unclear how those individuals with excessive Internet game use (EUG) but without addiction differ. This study examined inhibitory control, resting EEG, and ERP in EUG gamers compared to non-gamers. Fifteen participants in each group underwent 4-min eyes-closed EEG recordings and a color-word Stroop task. Results showed no significant differences in reaction time, accuracy, or P3 amplitude between EUG gamers and non-gamers. However, EUG gamers exhibited shortened P3 latency, which may suggest enhanced inhibitory control. Additionally, EUG gamers showed reduced theta and alpha band power during the resting state compared to non-gamers. These findings suggest that excessive gaming without addiction may enhance inhibitory control and influence brain activity differently from IGD.

Abstract:Background Internet gaming disorder (IGD) has become increasingly prevalent worldwide and is recognized as a significant public health concern because of its negative consequences on individuals mental and physical health, social relationships, academic performance and overall well-being. While research on IGD has gained significant momentum in the past decade, the neural substrates underlying this disorder remains unclear. This study aims to investigate resting-state cortical activation in male subjects with IGD using a concurrent functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) and electroencephalography (EEG) hybrid system. Methods Twenty-two male individuals with IGD (18-23 years old) and twenty-two male healthy, age-matched healthy controls were included in the study. Mean oxygenation of the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and whole head neural activity were measured using fNIRS and EEG respectively, during eyes-open and eyes-closed conditions at the resting state. EEG signals were decomposed into distinct frequency sub-bands with wavelet transform, followed by the analysis of the power spectral density within each band. Mean oxygenation of PFC is measured using a multichannel fNIRS system. Results Results revealed that the individuals with IGD had significantly higher beta power in the frontal region compared to the control group. Individuals with IGD showed significantly increased PFC oxygenation compared to healthy controls. Additionally, both frontal beta power and PFC oxygenation were significantly correlated with IGD severity. However, there were no significant correlations observed between oxygenation and beta powers. Conclusion This study is the first to examine resting-state cortical activation using multimodal EEG-fNIRS system in young adults with IGD. Moreover, it provides an important contribution to the understanding of the underlying neural mechanisms of IGD and offer new insights for the diagnosis and intervention of the disorder using multimodal EEG-fNIRS system. Further studies should aim to replicate the findings of this study using a larger and more culturally diverse sample to support the neurophysiological basis of IGD.

Abstract:Abstract Background and aims Resting-state brain activity may be associated with the ability to perform tasks; however, a multimodal approach involving resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and event-related potentials (ERPs) has not been widely used to investigate addictive disorders. Methods We explored resting-state fMRI and auditory oddball ERP values from 26 with internet gaming disorder (IGD) patients and 27 age- and intelligence quotient-matched healthy controls (HCs). To assess the characteristics of resting-state fMRI, we calculated regional homogeneity (ReHo), amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF), and fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (fALFF); we also calculated the P3 component of the ERPs. Results Compared with HCs, the individuals with IGD exhibited significant decreases in ReHo and fALFF values in the left inferior occipital gyrus, increased ReHo and ALFF values in the right precuneus, increased ALFF in the left superior frontal gyrus, and lower P3 amplitudes in the midline centro-parietal area during the auditory ERP task. Furthermore, the regional activity of resting-state fMRI in the right inferior temporal gyrus and the occipital regions were positively correlated with the P3 amplitudes in IGD patients, whereas ReHo values of the left hippocampus and the right amygdala were negatively correlated with P3. Discussion and conclusions Our results suggest that IGD patients have difficulty interacting effectively with cognitive function and sensory processing, although its interpretations need some cautions. The findings in this study will broaden the overall understanding of the neurobiological mechanisms that underlie IGD pathophysiology.

Abstract:In this study, the EEG signals of methamphetamine (meth) abusers in the abstinence period and healthy subjects were recorded to distinguish the brain regions that meth can significantly influence. These brain areas were discussed in terms of functionality. In addition, a decision support system (DSS) was introduced as a complementary method to recognize meth abusers accompanied by biochemical tests. Long‐term use of methamphetamine (meth) causes cognitive and neuropsychological impairments. Analysing the impact of this substance on the human brain can aid prevention and treatment efforts. In this study, the electroencephalogram (EEG) signals of meth abusers in the abstinence period and healthy subjects were recorded during eyes‐closed and eyes‐opened states to distinguish the brain regions that meth can significantly influence. In addition, a decision support system (DSS) was introduced as a complementary method to recognize substance users accompanied by biochemical tests. According to these goals, the recorded EEG signals were pre‐processed and decomposed into frequency bands using the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) method. For each frequency band, energy, KS entropy, Higuchi and Katz fractal dimensions of signals were calculated. Then, statistical analysis was applied to select features whose channels contain a p‐value less than 0.05. These features between two groups were compared, and the location of channels containing more features was specified as discriminative brain areas. Due to evaluating the performance of features and distinguishing the two groups in each frequency band, features were fed into a k‐nearest neighbour (KNN), support vector machine (SVM), multilayer perceptron neural networks (MLP) and linear discriminant analysis (LDA) classifiers. The results indicated that prolonged consumption of meth has a considerable impact on the brain areas responsible for working memory, motor function, attention, visual interpretation, and speech processing. Furthermore, the best classification accuracy, almost 95.8%, was attained in the gamma band during the eyes‐closed state.

Abstract:Objectives. Unsafe behavior (UB) is defined as the likelihood of intentionally or unintentionally deviating from pre-defined plans. This study aims to investigate the validation of a self-report tool for measuring workers' cognitive-based UB using quantitative electroencephalography (QEEG). Methods. The cognitive-based unsafe behavior questionnaire (CUBQ) was completed by 632 front-line workers in a manufacturing industry to identify differences in the backgrounds of the subjects regarding UBs. Two groups were then selected as extreme groups and QEEG was conducted based on the international 10–20 electrode placement. Results. The mean values of absolute power (AP), alpha/beta ratio (ABR) and alpha/gamma ratio (AGR) from brain oscillations in different regions of the cortex were significantly different between the studied groups ( p < 0.05). Additionally, these values were found to be significantly correlated with slips, lapses and mistakes, as measured by certain scales of the CUBQ ( p < 0.05). Conclusions. The findings of this study indicated differences in brain oscillation activities among industrial workers with different UB backgrounds. These results confirm the effectiveness of CUBQ as a proactive tool for safety practitioners to predict industrial workers' UBs.

Abstract:Gaming disorder (GD) is an addictive behavior characterized by an insatiable need to play video games and shares similar symptoms with the failure of self-control due to a decline in cognitive function. Current GD diagnostic and screening tools rely on questionnaires and behavioral observations related to cognitive functions to assess an individual's capacity to maintain self-control in everyday life. However, current GD screening approaches rely on subjective symptoms, and a reliable diagnosis requires long-term clinical follow-up. Recent studies have measured biosignals along with cognitive functional tasks to provide objectivity to GD diagnosis and to acquire immediate results. However, people with GD are hypersensitive to game-related cues, so their responses may vary depending on the type of stimuli, and the difference in response to stimuli might manifest as a difference in the degree of change in the biosignal. Therefore, it is critical to choose the correct stimulus type when performing GD diagnostic tasks. In this study, we investigated the task dependence of cognitive decline in GD by comparing two cognitive functional tasks: a continuous performance task (CPT) and video game play. For this study, 69 young male adults were classified into either the gaming disorder group (GD, n = 39) or a healthy control group (HC, n = 30). CPT score, EEG signal (theta, alpha, and beta), and HRV-HF power were assessed. We observed differences in the left frontal region (LF) of the brain between the GD and HC groups during online video game play. The GD group also showed a significant difference in HF power of HRV between CPT and online video gaming. Furthermore, LF and HRV-HF significantly correlated with Young's Internet Addiction Test (Y-IAT) score, which is positively associated with impulsivity score. The amount of change in theta band activity in LF and HRV-HF—both biomarkers for changes in cognitive function—during online video game play suggests that people with GD express task-dependent cognitive decline compared with HC. Our results demonstrate the feasibility of quantifying individual self-regulation ability for gaming and underscore its importance for GD classification.

Abstract:Background Inhibitory control ability is a crucial cognitive function that enables individuals to regulate their impulses and behaviors in a goal‐directed manner. However, with the increasing prevalence of internet gaming disorder (IGD), there has been growing concern about the impact of excessive gaming on inhibitory control ability. Despite the accumulating evidence on this topic, the research conclusion on whether people with IGD have worse inhibition control ability than healthy controls remains inconsistent, and the lack of effective electroencephalography prediction indicators further complicates this issue. To address this research gap, the present study aimed to investigate whether N2 event‐related potential (ERP) and P3 ERP components could serve as reliable indicators of inhibitory control ability in individuals with IGD. Methods To achieve this goal, a systematic literature search was conducted in several databases, including Web of Science, ScienceDirect (EBSCO), SpringerLink, PubMed, and Wiley Online Library. The inclusion criteria were strictly implemented to ensure the quality of the studies included in the meta‐analysis. In the end, a total of 5 studies, with 139 participants diagnosed with IGD and 139 healthy controls, were included in the analysis. Results Meta‐analysis revealed large effect sizes of N2 and P3 amplitudes in individuals with IGD, indicating that these two ERP components could be potential indicators of inhibitory control ability. Specifically, the N2 and P3 amplitude was significantly larger in individuals with IGD than in the healthy control group, suggesting deficits in inhibitory control function and increased impulsivity in the IGD group. In the inhibition control task, the IGD group required more cognitive resources to suppress impulsive responses. Conclusion Overall, the findings of this meta‐analysis shed light on the potential use of N2 and P3 amplitudes as reliable indicators of inhibitory control ability in individuals with IGD. The results provide crucial insights into the neural mechanisms underlying inhibitory control impairment in IGD, which could inform the development of effective interventions for this condition. Further research is needed to explore the functional significance of these ERP components and their potential clinical applications in the diagnosis and treatment of IGD.

Thus, other internet-related behaviors, that maybe addictive, should also be included. Previous neuroimaging studies have reported a role of alteration in brain’s inhibitory control mechanism in addiction. However, the results are still diverse with inconsistent findings. In this study, we used an Internet-related stop signal task with EEG signals recorded to study the relationship between internet addiction through brain oscillations and functional connectivity. We also compared the differences in the brain connectivity between addicted and non-addicted participants using phase lag index. We found that the brain connectivity in participants addicted to the internet is significantly greater than that of nonaddicted users.Clinical Relevance— In this study, we assessed brain functional networks of participants with Internet Gaming Disorder and internet addiction.

Game induced emotion analysis using electroencephalography

Abstract:Organizations vie to develop insights into the psychological aspects of consumer decision-making to enhance their products accordingly. Understanding how emotions and personality traits influence the choices we make is an integral part of product design. In this paper, we have employed machine learning algorithms to profile discrete emotions, in response to video games stimuli, based on features extracted from recorded electroencephalography (EEG) and to understand certain characteristics of personality. Four video games from different genres have been used for emotion elicitation and players' EEG signals are recorded. EEG being a non-stationary, non-linear and extremely noisy signal has been cleaned using a Savitzky-Golay filter which is found to be suitable for single-channel EEG devices. Seven out of sixteen features from time, frequency and time-frequency domains have been selected using Random Forest and used to classify emotions. Support Vector Machine, k-Nearest Neighbour and Gradient Boosted Trees classifiers have been used where the highest classification accuracy 82.26% is achieved with Boosted Trees classifier. Our findings propagate that for a single-channel EEG device, only four discrete emotions (happy, bored, relaxed, stressed) can be classified where two emotions happy and bored achieved the highest individual accuracy of 88.89% and 85.29% respectively with the Gradient Boosted Trees Classifier. In this study, we have also identified personality traits, extroversion and neuroticism influence players' perception of video games. The results indicate that players with low extroversion prefer relatively slow and strategy games as compared to highly extroverted. It has also been identified that puzzle and racing games are well-liked irrespective of the levels of the two personality traits.
A Comprehensive Analysis of 2D&3D Video Watching of EEG Signals by Increasing PLSR and SVM Classification Results

Abstract:Despite the development of two and three dimensional (2D&3D) technology, it has attracted the attention of researchers in recent years. This research is done to reveal the detailed effects of 2D in comparison with 3D technology on the human brain waves. The impact of 2D&3D video watching using electroencephalography (EEG) brain signals is studied. A group of eight healthy volunteers with the average age of 31+-3.06 years old participated in this three-stage test. EEG signal recording consisted of three stages: After a bit of relaxation (a), a 2D video was displayed (b), the recording of the signal continued for a short period of time as rest (c), and finally the trial ended. Exactly the same steps were repeated for the 3D video. Power spectrum density (PSD) based on short time Fourier transform (STFT) was used to analyze the brain signals of 2D&3D video viewers. After testing all the EEG frequency bands, delta and theta were extracted as the features. Partial least squares regression (PLSR) and Support vector machine (SVM) classification algorithms were considered in order to classify EEG signals obtained as the result of 2D&3D video watching. Successful classification results were obtained by selecting the correct combinations of effective channels representing the brain regions.

Exploring the Difference of Attention, Emotion, and Neurobiological Domains as Underlying Vulnerabilities For Game Addiction

Abstract:Recently, game addiction has officially been considered as a mental illness by WHO because of its negative consequences on people’s health. However, the predictive factors that make some individuals more at risk for game addiction are not well recognised. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether levels of attention, emotional responses, perceived immersion, and specific brain activities might be associated with the development of game addiction. A total of thirty-six participants were separated into two different groups based on high or low vulnerability to game addiction. During the experiment, frontal EEG signals were acquired while the participants were playing VR game and while other relevant behavioural tasks were completed. Results showed that the high vulnerability group had faster reaction time in pre- and post- gaming flanker tasks and a lower absolute beta power in comparison to the low vulnerability group. The current study accentuates the significance for future investigations on constructing complete pictures of game addiction and provides new insights into the diagnosis and treatment of game addiction. Limitations and future implications of the study were also discussed.

Abstract:In recent years, laptops and smart phones have become unavoidable, and the restriction in usage of these devices is impracticable. Starting from children to aged persons, many people spend their waiting time, travel time in this nicely, but the issue arises due to their influence in the golden working hours. It leads to waste of time, energy, and some of these practices may lead to addiction. Hence, a techno-cognitive approach of the biomedical analysis of brain can be done through electroencephalography (EEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). After investigations, a strategy is to be implemented to explore the dynamics of therapy on reducing the addiction. But it is not a simple task of making the addicted persons practice yoga or meditation routinely. It can be made possible through gamification of these practices. This chapter focuses the pre and post recording of the addicted person's brain activity to analyze and measure the improvement after the treatment via gamification strategy. After certain duration, the outcome is addiction removal.

Abstract:For the emerging significance of mental stress, various research directives have been established over time to better understand the causes of stress and how to deal with it. In recent years, the rise of video gameplay is unprecedented, further triggered by the lockdown imposed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This paper presents an end-to-end stress analysis for video gaming stimuli using EEG. The PSD value of the Alpha and Beta bands is computed to calculate the Beta-to-Alpha ratio (BAR). In this article, BAR is used to denote mental stress. Subjects are chosen based on various factors such as gender, gameplay experience, age, and BMI. EEG is recorded using Scan SynAmps2 Express equipment. There are three types of video gameplay: strategic, puzzle, and combinational. Relaxation is accomplished in this study by the use of music of various pitches. Two types of regression analysis are done to mathematically model stress and relaxation curve. Brain topography is rendered to indicate the stressed and relaxed region of the brain. In the relaxed state, the subjects have BAR 0.701, which is considered the baseline value. Non-gamer subjects have an average BAR of 2.403 for 1 hour of strategic video gameplay, whereas gamers have 2.218 BAR concurrently. After 12 minutes of listening to low-pitch music, gamers achieved 0.709 BAR, which is nearly the baseline value. In comparison to Quartic regression, the 4PL symmetrical sigmoid function performs regression analysis with fewer parameters and computational power.
