Social disparities in periodontitis among US adults: the effect of allostatic load

Abstract:Background: Periodontitis has been shown to be associated with allostatic load, a measure of physiological instability across biological systems from cumulative or repeated adaptation to stressors. Minority racial/ethnic and low socioeconomic groups tend to have higher prevalence of periodontitis and are more likely to be exposed to stress. The association between periodontitis and allostatic load and whether this association differed by race/ethnicity, education, income and age among US adults were examined. Methods: Using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1999-2004, prevalence ratios were calculated using logistic regression to estimate the strength of the association between allostatic load and the prevalence of periodontitis before and after adjusting for selected characteristics. Results: After adjustment for selected characteristics, including race/ethnicity, income and education, US adults with a high allostatic load were 55% (95% CI 1.05 to 2.29) more likely to have periodontitis than their counterparts with low allostatic load. This association varied by race/ethnicity where Mexican Americans with a high allostatic load were almost five (PR 4.62; 95% CI 2.52 to 8.50) times more likely to have periodontitis than their counterparts with low allostatic load. Conclusions: These data suggest that stress may be associated with periodontitis in the USA, with Mexican Americans exhibiting the strongest association. Furthermore, this group may lack appropriate coping responses to process chronic stressors that other groups may have historically been conditioned to handle. More research is needed to understand allostatic load in Mexican Americans and its influence on periodontitis.

Abstract:Objectives: Educational attainment is a protective factor against poor health, but high educational attainment has a weaker effect on black people than on white people; this pattern has been called marginalization-related diminished returns (MDRs). Using a national sample of white people and black people 25 years and above, this study estimates the association between high educational attainment and allostatic load between black people and white people, and within each group. Study design: This cross-sectional study uses data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) between 1999 and 2016, including 2761 black people and 7058 white people. The outcome variable of interest was the Allostatic Load Scale (AL). We created the allostatic load scale by using 8 biomarkers, then created a binary variable (if ALS≥4 as 1 and ALS<4 as 0) to present elevated AL. Methods: We used several weighted modified Poisson regression models controlling for educational attainment (a predictor) and race (a moderator variable), age, sex, and marital status. We also controlled the models for smoking and drinking status as health behavior variables. As a sensitivity analysis, we ran several sets of regression analysis using the AL scale as a continuous outcome variable. Results: We found an inverse association between AL and educational attainment. The interaction between race and education has resulted in an inverse association between AL and educational attainment, with a weaker association in black people than in white people. We found similar findings by running regression models with AL as a continuous variable. Conclusions: We observed a weaker association between educational attainment and AL in black people than in white people, suggesting that educational attainment has more robust protection against allostatic load for white people than black people.
Allostatic Load, Single, and Dual Chronic Conditions: Evidence from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey

Abstract:Background: Allostatic load (AL) is defined as a cumulative burden of chronic stress and life events, which involves the interaction of different physiological systems at varying degrees of activity. AL is suspected of contributing to health disparities among different populations. Suppressed or overactive physiological systems can interrupt AL affecting proper tissue and organ function leading to disease. The objective of our study was to determine the association of AL with dual chronic conditions. Methods: We used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). For the current analysis, we used the data cycles of 2007-2010, which is the most recent data that collected comprehensive measures of the composite AL outcome variable. Descriptive, bivariate, and multivariable logistic regression, with stepwise forward variable selection method (P < 0.05), were conducted using STATA/IC 15.0. Results: AL levels were high among 20% of the respondents (n = 2179). Having a lower income to poverty ratio, being married, physical inactivity, experiencing sleep problems, and a history of smoking were significantly associated with high AL (P < 0.05). Non-Hispanic blacks [odds ratio (OR): 1.8; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.6-2.4] and Mexicans and other Hispanics (OR: 1.4; 95% CI: 1.1-1.7) had higher AL compared to Caucasians. Having cardiovascular disease (CVD) (OR: 1.7; 95% CI: 1.4-2.2) and diabetes (OR: 4.7; 95% CI: 3.8-5.7) independently, as well as both CVD and diabetes (OR: 3.1; 95% CI 2.7-3.6), were associated with higher odds of AL. We conducted an age-adjusted regression model that indicated higher odds of elevated AL among females with diabetes independently (OR: 1.4; 95% CI: 1.2-1.9) and with both CVD and diabetes (OR: 1.6; 95% CI: 1.2-2.1) compared to men. Conclusions: Despite the significant impact and association of AL with overall health, there is minimal evidence of its risk factors and linkage to disease burden. Modifiable lifestyle factors were associated with a higher AL. There is a critical need to support ethnic and gender contextual interventions to reduce the burden of AL on chronic conditions.

Abstract:We conducted a study to elucidate factors influencing women's decisions regarding prenatal genetic screening for and diagnosis of chromosomal disorders and to learn about their experiences with these tests and with the medical system. Using focus group interviews and questionnaire assessments, we obtained detailed impressions of a diverse group of 75 pregnant women. Participants varied with respect to race/ethnicity, religious background, and reproductive history, as well as in their decisions about use of prenatal screening and diagnostic testing. Substantial variation surfaced in attitudes toward testing. Factors influencing women's views included available resources, feelings about having a child with Down syndrome, moral beliefs, family and social influences, perceptions of one's own health, the difficulty of becoming pregnant, and willingness to put the fetus at elevated miscarriage risk. Such findings indicate that age-based policies regarding access to prenatal diagnoses that, among other reasons, are based on the balance of risks between bearing a child with a chromosomal abnormality versus procedure-related loss are incompatible with the range of concerns that women bring to this decision and the weight individual women may assign to the outcomes.

Abstract:BackgroundAlthough oral health has improved remarkably in recent decades, not all populations have benefited equally. Ethnic identity, and in particular visible minority status, has been identified as an important risk factor for poor oral health. Canadian research on ethnic disparities in oral health is extremely limited. The aim of this study was to examine ethnic disparities in oral health outcomes and to assess the extent to which ethnic disparities could be accounted for by demographic, socioeconomic and caries-related behavioral factors, among a population-based sample of grade 1 and 2 schoolchildren (age range: 5-8 years) in Alberta, Canada.MethodsA dental survey (administered during 2013-14) included a mouth examination and parent questionnaire. Oral health outcomes included: 1) percentage of children with dental caries; 2) number of decayed, extracted/missing (due to caries) and filled teeth; 3) percentage of children with two or more teeth with untreated caries; and 4) percentage of children with parental-ratings of fair or poor oral health. We used multivariable regression analysis to examine ethnic disparities in oral health, adjusting for demographic, socioeconomic and caries-related behavioral variables.ResultsWe observed significant ethnic disparities in children’s oral health. Most visible minority groups, particularly Filipino and Arab, as well as Indigenous children, were more likely to have worse oral health than White populations. In particular, Filipino children had an almost 5-fold higher odds of having severe untreated dental problems (2 or more teeth with untreated caries) than White children. Adjustment for demographic, socioeconomic, and caries-related behavior variables attenuated but did not eliminate ethnic disparities in oral health, with the exception of Latin American children whose outcomes did not differ significantly from White populations after adjustment.ConclusionsSignificant ethnic disparities in oral health exist in Alberta, Canada, even when adjusting for demographic, socioeconomic and caries-related behavioral factors, with Filipino, Arab, and Indigenous children being the most affected.

Dental divisions: exploring racial inequities of dental caries amongst children

Abstract:Data sources: The search strategy involved three sequential stages. Initially, MEDLINE/PubMed was explored for relevant articles, identifying pertinent terms for formal searching. Using the terms ethnic, race, minoritised and dental caries, a strategy was formed and nine databases searched. Finally, hand-searching of reference lists of included articles and sourcing grey literature from relevant government reports, national oral health surveys, and registries which had comparative data for dental caries between racial groups, completed the search. Study selection: Studies included were original primary research which reported dental caries and compared racially minoritised children, aged 5-11 years, to similarly aged from national, majority, or privileged populations. Dental caries had to be recorded from a clinical examination which assessed decayed, missing, and filled teeth (dmft) in primary dentitions. Studies were excluded if they used immigration status as a basis of racial status, or they were a case report, case series, in vitro study, or literature review. Data extraction and synthesis: After removing duplicates, two independent researchers screened abstracts, prior to extracting critical data following full-text reviews of included articles. Information collected included study and participant characteristics, definitions of race, and dental caries measurement. The authors of studies which had missing data were contacted, whilst those not written in the English language were translated. Methodological quality of each study was independently assessed by two reviewers using a modified version of the Newcastle-Ottawa scale. All studies were included in the review regardless of quality. A narrative overview of all included studies was conducted. Meta-analyses were completed using studies that reported the mean and standard deviation of the caries outcomes in both groups. Caries outcomes included severity (defined as mean dmft) or prevalence (percentage of teeth with untreated dental caries > 0%). Due to anticipated heterogeneity, statistical analyses approaches such as I2 statistics were used to estimate between-study variability. Additional sub-group analyses were conducted based on country of study and world income index. Contour-enhanced funnel plots and trim-and-fill analysis were completed to explore potential publication bias. Sensitivity analyses were performed to ensure robustness of the findings. Results: Seventy-five studies were included from a variety of countries. A higher mean dmft score of 2.30 (0.45, 4.15) and prevalence of decayed teeth (d > 0) was 23% (95% CI: 16, 31) was noted amongst racially minoritised children compared to privileged children's populations. Notable disparities were reported in high-income countries, with minoritised children burdening the greatest distribution of caries incidence. The study faced challenges in consistent racial classification and encountered high heterogeneity in its findings, leading to varied GRADE assessment scores. Conclusions: The study calls for global, social, and political changes to tackle the substantial disparities in dental caries among minoritised children to achieve oral health equity.
Investigating Racial Differences in Allostatic Load by Educational Attainment among Non-Hispanic Black and White Men

Abstract:Education continues to be a key factor contributing to increased access to critical life-improving opportunities and has been found to be protective against Allostatic Load (AL). The purpose of this study was to assess AL among Non-Hispanic (NH) White and NH Black men with the same level of education. We used 1999-2016 National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) data with an analytical sample of 6472 men (1842 NH Black and 4630 NH White), and nine biomarkers to measure AL, controlling for various demographic and health-related factors. NH Black men had a higher AL score than NH White men (39.1%, 842 vs. 37.7%, 1,975). Racial disparities in AL between NH Black and NH White men who have a college degree or above (PR: 1.49, CI: [1.24-1.80]) were observed. Models posited similar AL differences at every other level of education, although these were not statistically significant. The findings reveal that socioeconomic returns to education and the societal protective mechanisms associated with education vary greatly between White and Black men.
An examination of racial/ethnic disparities in children's oral health in the United States

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: To assess the extent factors other than race/ethnicity explain apparent racial/ethnic disparities in children's oral health and oral health care.METHODS: Data were from the 2007 National Survey of Children's Health, for children 2-17 years (n=82,020). Outcomes included parental reports of child's oral health status, receiving preventive dental care, and delayed dental care/unmet need. Model-based survey-data-analysis examined racial/ethnic disparities, controlling for child, family, and community/state (contextual) factors.RESULTS: Unadjusted results show large racial/ethnic oral health disparities. Compared with non-Hispanic White people, Hispanic and non-Hispanic-Black people were markedly more likely to be reported in only fair/poor oral health [odds ratios (ORs) (95% confidence intervals) 4.3 (4.0-4.6), 2.2 (2.0-2.4), respectively], lack preventive care [ORs 1.9 (1.8-2.0), 1.4 (1.3-1.5)], and experience delayed care/unmet need [ORs 1.5 (1.3-1.7), 1.4 (1.3-1.5)]. Adjusting for child, family, and community/state factors reduced racial/ethnic disparities. Adjusted ORs (AORs) for Hispanics and non-Hispanic Blacks attenuated for fair/poor oral health, to 1.6 (1.5-1.8) and 1.2 (1.1-1.4), respectively. Adjustment eliminated disparities for lacking preventive care [AORs 1.0 (0.9-1.1), 1.1 (1.1-1.2)] and in Hispanics for delayed care/unmet need (AOR 1.0). Among non-Hispanic Blacks, adjustment reversed the disparity for delayed care/unmet need [AOR 0.6 (0.6-0.7)].CONCLUSIONS: Racial/ethnic disparities in children's oral health status and access were attributable largely to socioeconomic and health insurance factors. Efforts to decrease disparities may be more efficacious if targeted at social, economic, and other factors associated with minority racial/ethnic status and may have positive effects on all who share similar social, economic, and cultural characteristics.

THE STRONG RELATION BETWEEN YANAGIHARA’S SCORES AND ELECTRONEUROGRAPHY IN THE ACUTE STAGE OF BELL’S PALSY

Abstract:To the Editor: In their article, “Prognostic Value of Electromyography in Acute Peripheral Facial Nerve Palsy,” Drs. Sittel and Stennert (Otol Neurotol 2001;22:100–4) showed that the presence of spontaneous fibrillation in needle electromyography is a reliable sign of an unfavorable outcome. We analyzed the relationship between Yanagihara’s Score (1) and electroneurography (ENoG) in a prospective case-series review for its possible utilization in predicting the progress of recovery from acute Bell’s Palsy. Twenty-five patients with sudden facial paralysis of unknown cause (Bell’s Palsy) participated in this study in the department of Acupuncture & Moxibustion at Kyungsan Medical Center. Treatment consisted uniformly of acupuncture (LI4, ST2, ST4, ST6, ST36, BL2, TE17, TE23, GB14, GB20, and GV26) and herb medication (Boyangwhanho-tang). Prediction of progress in recovery was based on ENoG performed not earlier than 10 days after the onset of palsy. The findings were classified into low value ENoG and high value ENoG groups. Facial nerve function was assessed using Yanagihara’s scoring system at various points of time after the onset of Bell’s Palsy. From the results, the ENoG value appears to be a reliable sign of favorable outcome during the acute stage of Bell’s Palsy. Throughout the investigation, the Yanagihara’s scores observed the predictions based on the ENoG. A strong relationship between Yanagihara’s Score and ENoG during the acute stage of Bell’s Palsy was observed. Further long-term studies are needed to confirm this correlation. We hope that these few comments will bring more light to the doctors of Otology.
Examining educational attainment and allostatic load in non-Hispanic Black women

Abstract:Background: Research suggests that non-Hispanic Black (henceforth, Black) women and people with lower educational attainment have higher levels of allostatic load (AL). This study sought to determine the association between educational attainment and AL among a large sample of Black women. Methods: We analyzed data among 4177 Black women from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey years 1999-2018. AL score was defined as the total for abnormal measures of eight biomarkers. We further categorized participants with AL score greater than or equal to 4 as having high AL. We calculated mean estimates of total allostatic load scores using generalized linear models. We performed modified Poisson Regression models with robust variance estimation to estimate prevalence ratios (PRs) of high allostatic load and their associated 95% confidence intervals (CIs) by educational attainment. Results: Black women with a college degree or higher had the lowest prevalence of high allostatic load (31.8% vs. 42.7%, 36.3%, 36.6%), and age adjusted mean allostatic load scores (mean = 1.90 vs. mean = 2.34, mean = 1.99, mean = 2.05) when compared to Black women with less than a high school diploma, high school diploma or GED, and some college or associates degree respectively. Even after accounting for age, poverty-to-income ratio, smoking, congestive heart failure, and heart attack, Black college graduates had an 14.3% lower prevalence of high allostatic load (PR = 0.857, 95% CI 0.839-0.876) when compared to Black women with lower educational attainment. Conclusions: Black women with a baccalaureate degree or higher educational attainment had lower allostatic load compared to Black women with less than a high school education. This finding further confirms higher education is a social determinant of health. Future research should explore differences in AL by more granular degree types.
Single and Cumulative Relations of Social Risk Factors with Children’s Dental Health and Care-Utilization Within Regions of the United States

Abstract:Objectives The purpose is to examine the relation of social risk factors, and the cumulative burden of social risk factors, on parent-reported dental health and dental care-seeking behavior. Methods National Survey of Children’s Health data (2011–2012) were analyzed for US children by Title V Block Grant regions. Multivariate logistic regressions were estimated for ten social risk factors, as well as a cumulative risk index, to find any associations with poor condition of teeth, presence of dental caries, and no dental care visits. Results Almost all of the risk factors were significantly associated with poor condition of teeth and presence of dental caries for the US. Models associating no dental care visits suggested that low family income (OR 1.58), poor maternal mental health (OR 1.54), high school education or less (OR 1.34), and multi-racial/other race (OR 1.18) were significant factors for the US. Regional variation existed for those risk factors and their association with the outcomes, but income, education, and poor maternal mental health consistently played a significant role in adverse outcomes. The cumulative risk index was strongly related to poor oral health outcomes, with a weaker relationship to dental care utilization. Conclusions for Practice US children experiencing certain social risk factors, such as low family income, high school education or less, and poor maternal mental health, are likely to be at greater risk for poor dental health and low levels of dental-care seeking behavior. Children experiencing multiple social risks are at greater risk for poor oral outcomes than children who experience fewer social risks. An approach that involves the social determinants of health is needed to address these issues.

Guardians’ Self-Reported Fair/Poor Oral Health Is Associated with Their Young Children’s Fair/Poor Oral Health and Clinically Determined Dental Caries Experience

Abstract:In this cross-sectional, community-based study among a multi-ethnic sample of preschool-age children in North Carolina, United States, we sought to quantify the association between guardians’ self-reported oral health and their children’s oral health and determine whether race/ethnicity and education level modify these associations. We used questionnaire (n = 7852) responses about caregivers’ and their children’s oral health and clinical examination-derived (n = 6243) early childhood caries (ECC) status defined at the ICDAS ≥ 3 caries lesion detection threshold. We used multi-level mixed-effects generalized linear models to examine the associations between the guardians’ reported oral health and their children’s reported and clinically determined oral health among the entire sample and within strata of race/ethnicity, guardians’ education, and children’s dental home. The guardians’ and their children’s reported fair/poor oral health (FPOH) were 32% and 15%, respectively, whereas 54% of the children had ECC and 36% had unrestored disease. The guardians’ FPOH was strongly associated with their children’s FPOH (average marginal effect (AME) = +19 percentage points (p.p.); 95% CI = 17–21), and this association was most pronounced among Hispanics, lower-educated guardians, and children without a dental home. Similar patterns, but smaller-in-magnitude associations, were found for the guardians’ FPOH and their children’s clinically determined ECC (AME = +9 p.p.; 95% CI = 6–12) and unrestored disease (AME = +7 p.p.; 95% CI = 4–9). The study’s findings support a strong association between guardians’ and their children’s reported and clinically determined oral health and implicate ethnicity, education, and having a dental home as factors possibly modifying the magnitude of these associations.

Abstract:Objectives: Using nationally representative data for adults of age 25 years and older from four waves of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), collected from 2003 through 2010, this study examines differences in individual health markers used to calculate allostatic load, with particular attention given to stratification by race/ethnicity and educational level. Methods: Factor analysis with maximum likelihood estimation was used. Fisher's r to z transformation test was used to determine whether or not observed differences in factor loadings were statistically significant. Results: The findings reveal the unidimensionality of the concept of allostatic load and the underlying differences in associations between individual biomarkers and summary measures of allostatic load. Additionally, metabolic processes tend to be the most important predictor of allostatic load for all adults; however, inflammatory measures are more important in determining allostatic load scores for non-Hispanic blacks compared to non-Hispanic whites and for adults with less than a college education compared to adults with some college or a college degree. Conclusions: These findings highlight the continued importance of studying the concept of "weathering" or allostatic load at the population level and need to better understand how population groups facing exclusion from economic, social, and political power may internalize this position which may cause early health deterioration and ultimate mortality chance through different expression of health insults and premature aging. Abstract:Sodium propionate (2.5 mmol/kg) was infused rapidly via a jugular vein into each of 13 multiparous Holstein cows at 7 wk postpartum for observation of clearance of propionate. Associated concentration changes of acetate and glucose in blood plasma and glucagon and insulin in blood serum were quantified. This dose elevated concentrations of propionate, which declined subsequently at an exponential rate (.108 min-1). Concentrations of glucagon and insulin were increased in the sampling immediately following infusion, yet subsequent decline of insulin concentrations acted to decrease the molar ratio of insulin:glucagon as propionate returned to preinfusion concentrations. Analysis of sample means disclosed a negative correlation -.82 between glucose and molar ratio of insulin:glucagon. These experimental observations suggest that a supraphysiological dose of propionate has an immediate effect on the pancreas to alter endocrine secretion in the lactating cow.
Longitudinal association of allostatic load with depressive symptoms among urban adults: Healthy Aging in Neighborhoods of Diversity across the Life Span study

Abstract:Background: Evidence suggests that lifetime exposure to stressful life events and chronic stressors may be linked to geriatric depression. Allostatic load (AL) is considered a mediator of the stress-health relationship and has been linked to psychosocial factors reflecting health disparities. The purpose of this study was to examine the longitudinal associations of AL with depressive symptoms scores among urban adults, before and after stratifying by sex and race. Methods: Secondary analyses were performed using Visit 1 (2004-2009), Visit 2 (2009-2013) and Visit 3 (2013-2017) data collected on 2298 Healthy Aging in Neighborhoods of Diversity across the Life Span study participants (baseline age: 30-64 y). AL at Visit 1 (ALv1) and z-transformed probability of higher AL trajectory (ALtraj) between Visits 1 and 3 were calculated using cardiovascular, metabolic and inflammatory risk indicators. The 20-item Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression (CES-D) scale was used to calculate total and domain-specific depressive symptoms scores. Mixed-effects linear models controlled for socio-demographic, lifestyle and health characteristics. Results: In fully adjusted models, a positive cross-sectional relationship was observed between ALv1 and "somatic complaints" depressive symptoms (β = 0.21, P = 0.006) score at Visit 1, whereas ALtraj was associated with increasing depressive symptoms score (β = 0.086, P = 0.003) between Visits 1 and 3. An inverse relationship was observed between ALtraj and "positive affect" depressive symptoms score at Visit 1 among women (β = -0.31, P < 0.0001) and White adults (β = -0.32, P = 0.004). Among women, ALtraj was also positively related to change in "somatic complaints" depressive symptoms score between Visits 1 and 3 (β = 0.043, P = 0.020). Conclusions: Among urban adults, AL may be associated with "somatic complaints" depressive symptoms at baseline. Higher AL trajectories may predict increasing depressive symptoms (overall) and increasing "somatic complaints" depressive symptoms (among women). A higher AL trajectory may be associated with lower "positive affect" depressive symptoms at baseline among women and White adults only.

Abstract:(1) Background: Childhood obesity and dental caries are common chronic conditions with multiple contributing factors, linked to negative health consequences and significant expenses in healthcare. The aim of this study was to assess the correlation between obesity and dental caries in school-aged children; (2) Methods: Data from 3323 6–12-year-old children from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011–2016 were analyzed. The NHANES was conducted at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States. The CDC standard was used to define obesity. Dental caries was measured during clinical examinations and summarized using DMFT scores for caries experience and prevalence (dt > 0) for untreated caries. The study examined the correlation between obesity and dental caries using regression models that considered demographic variables, family socioeconomic status, and the child's intake of added sugars as controlling factors; (3) Results: The association between obesity and dental caries was not significant in either unadjusted or adjusted models; and (4) Conclusion: The data indicate that untreated caries and caries experiences are not directly correlated with childhood obesity. There are, however, common causes of poor dental health and childhood obesity: culture, poverty level, lifestyle, and family traditions and habits. Dentists must be aware of factors influencing the development of childhood caries so that they can intervene as early as possible.

Abstract:Objectives: Fermentable carbohydrate is universally recognized as the major dietary risk factor for dental caries. We assessed the broader relationship between diet quality and dental caries in a diverse Latinx adult population. Methods: In a cross-sectional probability sample, 14,517 dentate men and women in the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos (HCHS/SOL) received a dental examination and completed two 24-hours dietary recalls and a food propensity questionnaire. The 2010 Alternative Healthy Eating Index (AHEI) assessed diet quality and the National Cancer Institute method predicted usual intake of the 11 dietary components that comprise the AHEI. Dental caries experience was quantified using the decayed, missing and filled surfaces (DMFS) index. Covariates included sociodemographic and anthropometric characteristics. Survey multivariable-adjusted linear regression models quantified the relationship of 2010 AHEI score, and its 11 components, with DMFS. Results: In multivariable-adjusted models, each 10-unit increase in diet quality score was associated with 2.5 fewer (95% confidence interval: -3.4, -1.6) DMFS. The relationship was pronounced among foreign-born individuals, who comprised three-quarters of the sample, irrespective of their length of US residence, but was not apparent among U.S.-born individuals. Greater intake of sugar-sweetened beverage and fruit juice was positively associated with dental caries, whereas vegetables (excluding potatoes); whole grains; and omega-3 fats were inversely associated with dental caries, independent of covariates and the other dietary components (all P < 0.05). Conclusions: An association between diet quality and dental caries was restricted to foreign-born Latinix and was not limited to the adverse impact of sugar-sweetened drinks.
