Abstract:Abstract Monitoring microclimate variables within cities with high accuracy is an ongoing challenge for a better urban resilience to climate change. Assessing the intra-urban characteristics of a city is of vital importance for ensuring fine living standards for citizens. Here, a novel mobile microclimate station is applied for monitoring the main microclimatic variables regulating urban and intra-urban environment, as well as directionally monitoring shortwave radiation and illuminance and hence systematically map for the first time the effect of urban surfaces and anthropogenic heat. We performed day-time and night-time monitoring campaigns within a historical city in Italy, characterized by substantial urban structure differentiations. We found significant intra-urban variations concerning variables such as air temperature and shortwave radiation. Moreover, the proposed experimental framework may capture, for the very first time, significant directional variations with respect to shortwave radiation and illuminance across the city at microclimate scale. The presented mobile station represents therefore the key missing piece for exhaustively identifying urban environmental quality, anthropogenic actions, and data driven modelling toward risk and resilience planning. It can be therefore used in combination with satellite data, stable weather station or other mobile stations, e.g. wearable sensing techniques, through a citizens’ science approach in smart, livable, and sustainable cities in the near future.

A Cross-Scale Methodological Framework for the Quantification of the Impact of Urban Features on Intra-City Microclimate

Abstract:Evaluation of the outdoor thermal comfort and comprehension of the impact of urban morphology are essential for assessing heat-related risks and implementing urban planning strategies that enhance the resilience of urban populations to extreme heat events. However, the challenge lies in achieving city-wide thermal comfort mapping at high spatial and temporal resolutions, which requires consideration of the complex urban morphology (urban geometry and land cover) at a microscale, as well as the background meteorological factors at larger scale. Here, we introduce an effective framework for city-scale thermal comfort mapping at high spatial-temporal resolution that integrates WRF-UCM and SOLWEIG model, aiming to achieve fine-grained thermal comfort mapping at the city scale and to explore the impact of urban morphology on these thermal conditions. In the proposed framework, we employ the WRF-UCM model (The Weather Research and Forecasting model coupled with the urban canopy model) to establish the background meteorological condition at local-scale (500m resolution). Additionally, we utilize the SOLWEIG (Solar and Longwave Environmental Irradiance Geometry) model for the simulation of mean radiant temperature at a finer micro-scale (10m resolution), a critical determinant of thermal comfort. These simulations are performed using detailed 3D urban morphological data and land cover information. Subsequently, the Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI) is calculated on hourly basis, integrating the aforementioned factors. A case study conducted for a Chinese city with a population of 15 million demonstrates a significant correction between the rise in the UTCI during daytime and an increase in impervious surface area, evidenced by a maximum correlation coefficient of 0.80. Furthermore, our findings emphasize the significance of tree canopy coverage in mitigating heat, demonstrating that an implementation of 40% tree cover could diminish daytime UTCI by approximately 1.5 to 2.0 ºC. This methodological framework is not only instrumental in assessing heat-related risks and human thermal discomfort within intricate urban environments but also offers pivotal insights for the adoption of climate-resilient urban planning strategies.
On urban microclimate spatial-temporal dynamics: Evidence from the integration of fixed and wearable sensing and mapping techniques

Abstract:Urban Heat Island (UHI) is acknowledged to generate harmful consequences on human health, and it is one of the main anthropogenic challenges to face in modern cities. Due to the urban dynamic complexity, a full microclimate decoding is required to design tailored mitigation strategies for reducing heat-related vulnerability. This study proposes a new method to assess intra-urban microclimate variability by combining for the first time two dedicated monitoring systems consisting of fixed and mobile techniques. Data from three fixed weather stations were used to analyze long-term trends, while mobile devices (a vehicle and a wearable) were used in short-term monitoring campaigns conducted in summer and winter to assess and geo-locate microclimate spatial variations. Additionally, data from mobile devices were used as input for Kriging interpolation in the urban area of Florence (Italy) as case study. Mobile monitoring sessions provided high-resolution spatial data, enabling the detection of hyperlocal variations in air temperature. The maximum air temperature amplitudes were verified with the wearable system: 3.3 °C in summer midday and 4.3 °C in winter morning. Physiological Equivalent Temperature (PET) demonstrated to be similar when comparing green areas and their adjacent built-up zone, showing up the microclimate mitigation contribution of greenery in its surrounding. Results also showed that mixing the two data acquisition and varied analysis techniques succeeded in investigating the UHI and the site-specific role of potential mitigation actions. Moreover, mobile dataset was reliable for elaborating maps by interpolating the monitored parameters. Interpolation results demonstrated the possibility of optimizing mobile monitoring campaigns by focusing on targeted streets and times of day since interpolation errors increased by 10% only with properly reduced and simplified input samples. This allowed an enhanced detection of the site-specific granularity, which is important for urban planning and policymaking, adaptation, and risk mitigation actions to overcome the UHI and anthropogenic climate change effects.
A WRF-UCM-SOLWEIG Framework for Mapping Thermal Comfort and Quantifying Urban Climate Drivers: Advancing Spatial and Temporal Resolutions at City Scale

Abstract:The capability to evaluate city-scale outdoor thermal comfort is crucial for understanding the public's experience of heat stress, especially during heat waves. Nevertheless, there remains a methodological gap in accurately mapping thermal comfort with high spatial and temporal resolutions in complex urban environment and in quantifying the contributions of various urban climate drivers, such as sky view factors and tree canopy fraction. To bridge this gap, we propose an innovative WRF-UCM-SOLWEIG framework that couples a mesoscale model with an urban microclimate model. Specifically, it integrates the Weather Research and Forecasting model coupled with the urban canopy model (WRF-UCM) and the Solar and Longwave Environmental Irradiance Geometry model (SOLWEIG). This framework is then applied to a densely populated tropical city in China, to quantify the impact of urban climate drivers on the Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI). The results reveal a significant diurnal variation in the impact of urban morphology. Notably, the most significant drivers affecting daytime UTCI are the impervious surface fraction and the tree canopy fraction, with maximum Pearson's correlation coefficients of 0.80 and -0.70, respectively. These findings suggest that urban heat mitigation strategies should prioritize on reducing impervious surfaces and enhancing shade management, alongside expanding urban forestry measures.

Abstract:Researchers studying urban climates aim to understand phenomena like urban heat islands (UHIs), which describe temperature differences between urban and rural areas. However, studies often lack numerous measurement points and frequently overlook parameters like radiation and air velocity due to the high cost of precision instrumentation. This results in data with a low resolution, particularly in tropical cities where official weather stations are scarce. This research introduces a new, low-tech tool for district-level outdoor thermal comfort assessment and UHI characterization to address these challenges. The automated weather station employs sensors to measure temperature, humidity, wind speed, solar radiation, and globe temperature. The paper details these sensors' rigorous selection and validation process, followed by a description of the sensor assembly, data acquisition chain, and network operation mechanisms. Calibration outcomes in laboratory and in situ environments highlight the station's reliability, even in tropical conditions. In conclusion, this weather station offers a cost-effective solution to gathering high-resolution data in urban areas, enabling an improved understanding of the UHI phenomenon and the refinement of urban microclimate numerical models.

Abstract:PURPOSE The expression of Fas ligand (FasL) in the cornea is essential for corneal allograft acceptance in mice. Because the expression of FasL on the surface of cells is sensitive to cleavage with matrix metalloproteases (MMPs), this study examined whether inhibitors of MMPs would lead to increased FasL expression and improved corneal allograft survival. METHODS Corneal endothelia derived from mice and humans were treated with MMP inhibitors, and FasL expression was examined. BALB/c mice were engrafted with C57BL/6 or C57BL/6-gld corneas and treated with an ointment containing the MMP inhibitor, doxycycline. Corneal allograft survival was monitored for 50 days. RESULTS Corneal endothelial cells from both mice and humans displayed increased surface expression of FasL after treatment with MMP inhibitors. The increase in surface expression was further evidenced by the ability of these cells to kill Fas-expressing target cells. Mice treated with doxycycline after corneal allograft transplantation showed significantly prolonged allograft survival and an increase in the overall acceptance rate. CONCLUSIONS MMP inhibitor treatment of cornea-derived endothelial cells results in increased FasL expression and function. MMP inhibitor treatment prolongs corneal allograft survival and results in a modest increase in corneal allograft acceptance.

Abstract:Mobile monitoring is used as an additional tool to collect air quality data at a high spatial resolution and to complement data from fixed air quality stations. Citizens are interested in contributing to air quality monitoring, and while the availability of low-cost air quality sensors can create opportunities to measure the air quality at a high spatial resolution, the data are often of lower quality, and sensors that measure combustion-related aerosols (like black carbon) are not commonly available. Mobile monitoring using a mid-range instrument can fill this gap. We present the results of a mobile BC (black carbon) monitoring campaign performed by citizens in Mechelen as part of a local citizen observatory (CO), Meet Mee Mechelen, initiated as part of the European H2020 project, Ground Truth 2.0. The goal of the study was two-fold: (1) to propose and evaluate a mobile monitoring method (data collection and data processing) to construct pollution maps of BC concentrations and (2) to demonstrate how to organize community-based air quality monitoring to measure both the spatial and temporal variations in air pollution levels. Measurements were taken during peak hours in four campaigns characterized by different meteorological conditions: October–November 2017, February–March 2018, June–July 2018 and September 2018. The results show large spatial and temporal variabilities. Spatial variability is influenced by traffic volume, stop-and-go traffic and also the building environment and the distance of biking paths from road traffic. The four different campaigns show similar spatial patterns, but due to background and meteorological influences, the absolute concentrations differ between seasons. A rescaling method using data from fixed stations in the air quality monitoring network (AQMN) was presented to construct maps representative of longer periods. This paper shows that mobile measurements can be used by CO to assess the spatial variability of air quality in a city. The data can be used to evaluate mobility plans, carry out hot spot detection, evaluate the exposure of cyclists as a function of cycling infrastructure and perform model validation. However, it is important to use high-quality instruments and apply the correct measurement methodology (number of repetitions, season) to obtain meaningful data.

Abstract:Investigating diurnal and seasonal variations in a multi-domain approach still needs to be exploited for people's wellbeing in urban coastal areas. This study, therefore, presents an innovative method to assess the effects of urban water bodies accounting for hyperlocal climate conditions, continuously mapped via mobile/wearable environmental monitoring. This was performed via wearable sensing during winter and summer, analyzing eight urban canyons with different morphologies and anthropogenic activities. The water body's effect was assessed by comparing air temperature along these canyons, while heat stress was evaluated through Physiological Equivalent Temperature (PET). In winter, the sea effect was not explicitly identified. Conversely, the cooling effect was evident in summer. Despite statistically significant correlations between air temperature and distance from the sea, no association between air temperature and sky view factor (SVF) was detected. Additionally, particulate matter (PM) concentration analysis did not allow identifying specific anthropogenic actions and cannot behave as an effective proxy. However, different temperature trends in winter and summer may represent a clear and cheap-to-detect outcome of the anthropogenic complexity in every urban canyon, which includes varied urban features and local overheating forcing. This highlights the importance of hyperlocal microclimate monitoring accounting for these strategic differences to be detected, during heat waves for instance.

Abstract:Mobile monitoring can supplement regulatory measurements, particularly in low-income countries where stationary monitoring is sparse. Here, we report results from a ~ year-long mobile monitoring campaign of on-road concentrations of black carbon (BC), ultrafine particles (UFP), and carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) in Bengaluru, India. The study route included 150 unique kms (average: ~22 repeat measurements per monitored road segment). After cleaning the data for known instrument artifacts and sensitivities, we generated 30 m high-resolution stable 'data only' spatial maps of BC, UFP, and CO 2 for the study route. For the urban residential areas, the mean BC levels for residential roads, arterials, and highways were ~ 10, 22, and 56 μg m −3 , respectively. A similar pattern (highways being characterized by highest pollution levels) was also observed for UFP and CO 2 . Using the data from repeat measurements, we carried out a Monte Carlo subsampling analysis to understand the minimum number of repeat measures to generate stable maps of pollution in the city. Leveraging the simultaneous nature of the measurements, we also mapped the quasi-emission factors (QEF) of the pollutants under investigation. The current study is the first multi-season mobile monitoring exercise conducted in a low or middle -income country (LMIC) urban setting that oversampled the study route and investigated the optimum number of repeat rides required to achieve representative pollution spatial patterns characterized with high precision and low bias. Finally, the results are discussed in the context of technical aspects of the campaign, limitations, and their policy relevance for our study location and for other locations. Given the day-to-day variability in the pollution levels, the presence of dynamic and unorganized sources, and active government pollution mitigation policies, multi-year mobile measurement campaigns would help test the long-term representativeness of the current results.

Abstract:The trend of urbanization nowadays has caused serious issues related to climate. One of the most important ones is that of the 'Urban Heat Island (UHI)' and it occurs in major cities throughout the world. The most important categories, and therefore the most studied ones, are the canopy urban heat island (CUHI) and surface heat island (SUHI). The aim and the novelty of the current study was to assess different remote sensing approaches to detect the thermal environment of an open area inside a large city. The study was undertaken in an urban area with green spaces, in the Bosco Verticale area in the city of Milan, during the spring and summer period of 2021. The area is characterized by different types of cover materials, which were investigated in terms of surface temperature under shaded and non-shaded conditions. Both field measurements and remote sensing techniques were applied. Remote sensing techniques included downscaling techniques and the usage of different split-window algorithms applied on the Landsat8 satellite sensor data. The land surface temperature (LST) extracted from remote sensing methods was compared with the surface temperature derived from in situ measurements. For the needs of the study, both in situ measurements and the collection of meteorological data from different fixed meteorological stations throughout the city of Milan were carried out. The results revealed the significance of greenery presence inside the urban environment, as a comparison of the meteorological data across the urban area of Milan showed that the areas with a low presence of greenery were found to be warmer than those with a higher presence of green elements. Concerning the field measurements in the study area, the results showed a significant reduction in both surface and air temperature in shaded places. On the other hand, the presence of conventional artificial materials in sunny areas led to relatively high values of both surface and air temperature. The downscaling method showed satisfying results in terms of average LST values; however, some discrepancies appeared in terms of the RMSE index. The application of split-window algorithms has shown that some forms of the 'Generalized split-window algorithm' and some forms of the 'Jimenez-Munoz algorithm' presented better performance among the studied algorithms. Comparing the LST values derived from the most representative algorithm, the 'Du, Wan algorithm', with those derived from downscaling methods, it was found to be quite close. However, under shaded conditions, the results derived from the 'Split-window algorithm' were found to be more precise. The application of remote sensing techniques in microscale in urban regions should be further studied in future, as they could be an essential tool for observing microclimatic conditions in urban areas and on building scale.

Abstract:The morphological complexity of urban environments results in a high spatial and temporal variability of the urban microclimate. The consequent demand for high-resolution atmospheric data remains a challenge for atmospheric research and operational application. The recent widespread availability and increasing adoption of low-cost mobile sensing offer the opportunity to integrate observations from conventional monitoring networks with microclimatic and air pollution data at a finer spatial and temporal scale. So far, the relatively low quality of the measurements and outdoor performance compared to conventional instrumentation has discouraged the full deployment of mobile sensors for routine monitoring. The present study addresses the performance of a commercial mobile sensor, the MeteoTracker (IoTopon Srl), recently launched on the market to quantify the microclimatic characteristics of the outdoor environment. The sensor follows the philosophy of the Internet of Things technology, being low cost, having an automatic data flow via personal smartphones and online data sharing, supporting user-friendly software, and having the potential to be deployed in large quantities. In this paper, the outdoor performance is evaluated through tests aimed at quantifying (i) the intra-sensor variability under similar atmospheric conditions and (ii) the outdoor accuracy compared to a reference weather station under sub-optimal (in a fixed location) and optimal (mobile) sensor usage. Data-driven corrections are developed and successfully applied to improve the MeteoTracker data quality. In particular, a recursive method for the simultaneous improvement of relative humidity, dew point, and humidex index proves to be crucial for increasing the data quality. The results mark an intra-sensor variability of approximately ± 0.5 °C for air temperature and ± 1.2 % for the corrected relative humidity, both of which are within the declared sensor accuracy. The sensor captures the same atmospheric variability as the reference sensor during both fixed and mobile tests, showing positive biases (overestimation) for both variables. Through the mobile test, the outdoor accuracy is observed to be between ± 0.3 to ± 0.5 °C for air temperature and between ± 3 % and ± 5 % for the relative humidity, ranking the MeteoTracker in the real accuracy range of similar commercial sensors from the literature and making it a valid solution for atmospheric monitoring.

Abstract:Air pollution monitoring using mobile ground-based measurement platforms can provide high-quality spatiotemporal air pollution information. As mobile air quality monitoring campaigns extend to entire fleets of vehicles and integrate smaller-scale air quality sensors, it is important to address the need to assess these measurements in a scalable manner. We explore the collocation-based evaluation of air quality measurements in a mobile platform using fixed regulatory sites as a reference. We compare two approaches: a standard collocation assessment technique, in which the mobile platform is parked near the fixed regulatory site for a period of time, and an expanded approach, which uses measurements while the mobile platform is in motion in the general vicinity of the fixed regulatory site. Based on the availability of fixed-reference-site data, we focus on three pollutants (ozone, nitrogen dioxide, and nitric oxide) with distinct atmospheric lifetimes and behaviors. We compare measurements from a mobile laboratory with regulatory site measurements in Denver, CO, USA, and in the San Francisco Bay Area, CA, USA. Our 1-month Denver dataset includes both parked collocation periods near the fixed regulatory sites and general driving patterns around the sites, allowing a direct comparison of the parked and mobile collocation techniques on the same dataset. We show that the mobile collocation approach produces similar performance statistics, including coefficients of determination and mean bias errors, to the standard parked collocation technique. This is particularly true when the comparisons are restricted to specific road types, with residential streets showing the closest agreement and highways showing the largest differences. We extend our analysis to a larger (yearlong) dataset in California, where we explore the relationships between the mobile measurements and the fixed reference sites on a larger scale. We show that using a 40 h running median converges to within ± 4 ppbv of the fixed reference site for nitrogen dioxide and ozone and up to about 8 ppbv for nitric oxide. We propose that this agreement can be leveraged to assess instrument performance over time during large-scale mobile monitoring campaigns. We demonstrate an example of how such relationships can be employed during large-scale monitoring campaigns using small sensors to identify potential measurement biases.

Abstract:People are increasingly concerned with understanding their personal environment, including possible exposure to harmful air pollutants. To make informed decisions on their day-to-day activities, they are interested in real-time information on a localized scale. Publicly available, fine-scale, high-quality air pollution measurements acquired using mobile monitors represent a paradigm shift in measurement technologies. A methodological framework utilizing these increasingly fine-scale measurements to provide real-time air pollution maps and short-term air quality forecasts on a fine-resolution spatial scale could prove to be instrumental in increasing public awareness and understanding. The Google Street View study provides a unique source of data with spatial and temporal complexities, with the potential to provide information about commuter exposure and hot spots within city streets with high traffic. We develop a computationally efficient spatiotemporal model for these data and use the model to make short-term forecasts and high-resolution maps of current air pollution levels. We also show via an experiment that mobile networks can provide more nuanced information than an equally sized fixed-location network. A spatio-temporal methodology for greenhouse microclimatic mapping

Abstract:Greenhouse internal microclimate has been proven to be non-homogeneous in many aspects. However, this variability is only sometimes considered by greenhouse models, which often calculate climatic variables without any spatial reference. Farmers, on the other hand, may wish to have these differences highlighted as they could lead to aimed actions only for a specific area of the greenhouse, while at the same time, they are not willing to invest in sensors to be installed everywhere. This paper presents a data-driven methodology to generate a virtual 2D map of a greenhouse, which allows farmers to control any critical parameter they desire with minimum investment, as monitoring is done via soft sensing with only a few actual sensors. The proposed flow starts with a set of temporary sensors placed in the points of interest; then, a model for each of them is developed via linear regression and, finally, a map of the entire area can be derived by interpolating values from these models. This allows the generation of accurate models at a reduced cost as temporary sensors can be reused at other locations. The methodology has been tested on adjacent greenhouses and in two farms, where temperature and other climatic variables have been monitored. Experimental results show that the proposed methodology can reach an adjusted R 2 value of 98% for predicting values in different greenhouse locations.

Abstract:We present new advances in monitoring particulate matter (PM) in urban areas within a participatory vehicle sensor network (VSN) that exploits the use of multiple mobile low-cost IoT devices. These devices send geolocated PM measurements to an IT infrastructure and enabled us to reconstruct, in real time, the spatial and temporal distribution of pollutants in the study area in a web-based environment. The newly acquired data were integrated with independent reference measurements available from governmental environmental agencies. We deployed the infrastructure in the city of Trieste (Italy), since the beginning of 2021, with the help of several volunteers and the local transportation authority (Trieste Trasporti). By analysing the data, we delineate areas with lower air quality and identify the possible causes of these anomalies. We were able to define a belt outside the urban center where an enhanced concentration of pollutants occurs due to a higher flux of vehicular traffic that tends to jam there. Overall, our results demonstrate that this approach can be helpful in supporting urban planning and can also stimulate the community to reflect on how they can improve air quality in the area they live by reducing the use of private cars in favour of more widespread public transportation usage.

Abstract:Environmental data with a high spatio-temporal resolution is vital in informing actions toward tackling urban sustainability challenges. Yet, access to hyperlocal environmental data sources is limited due to the lack of monitoring infrastructure, consistent data quality, and data availability to the public. This paper reports environmental data ( PM , NO 2 , temperature, and relative humidity) collected from 2020 to 2022 and calibrated in four deployments in three global cities. Each data collection campaign targeted a specific urban environmental problem related to air quality, such as tree diversity, community exposure disparities, and excess fossil fuel usage. Firstly, we introduce the mobile platform design and its deployment in Boston (US), NYC (US), and Beirut (Lebanon). Secondly, we present the data cleaning and validation process, for the air quality data. Lastly, we explain the data format and how hyperlocal environmental datasets can be used standalone and with other data to assist evidence-based decision-making. Our mobile environmental sensing datasets include cities of varying scales, aiming to address data scarcity in developing regions and support evidence-based environmental policymaking.

Abstract:Mitigating Urban Heat Island (UHI) intensity in cities through adaptative strategies has become an urgent need, as UHI are also exacerbated by climate change impacts imputable to anthropogenic actions. This study addresses the need for reliable simulation models to analyze outdoor thermal comfort (OTC) in future or alternative scenarios. The aim of the present study is to contribute to the validation of CFD urban microclimate simulations by employing intra-urban canyon transects as an alternative or a complementary approach to fixed stations. To accomplish this, we developed a cost-effective monitoring unit to carry out transects on a pre-defined route (1), devised the area of interest (2), elaborated a simulation model in ENVI-met (3), and proposed different validation methods for comparative analyses (4). Results indicate that temporal validated simulation tended to underestimate thermal indices in the morning and night and overestimate them in the afternoon, while spatio-temporal validation under a human-centric comfort approach via wearable sensing notably improved accuracy. Moderate to very strong agreement between simulation and measurement data in summer (Willmot's d ~ 0.70, d ~ 0.81) and very strong agreement in winter (d ~ 0.79, d ~ 0.96), with low error magnitudes in summer (RMSE ~ 0.91°C and 9.59%, MBE ~ 0.23°C and 9.10%) have been found. In winter, such figures were RMSE ~ 0.71°C and 3.51%, MBE ~ 0.00°C and 0.98%, for the spatio-temporal validated model. This research contributes to enhancing the reliability of relatively affordable CFD urban microclimate simulations, supporting its scale up for policymakers in implementing effective strategies for OTC.

Abstract:The availability of high spatio-temporal resolution of urban air temperature is paramount for understanding urban heat island (UHI) and developing effective mitigation strategies, in particular for local-scale mitigations. Obtaining high spatial resolution of air temperature at city-scale is challenging as the quantity of weather stations is often limited in cities, particularly in those less developed ones. In this study, based on the existing weather station network in Guangzhou city, China, we compare eight different air temperature predictive models and select one with the best performance to interpolate city-scale air temperature. The training and validation of the models are performed using observatory meteorological data of 321 weather stations in Guangzhou. Deep learning-derived land cover information and social-economic data are encoded to be used as explanatory variables. The regression kriging combined with multiple linear regression is found to result in the best performance, with an average root mean squared error (RMSE) of 0.92 degrees C and a coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.959. Furthermore, the quantities and locations of current weather stations can be optimized by the proposed model. Guided by the k-means clustering alongside the information of geocoordinates and land cover, the number of current weather stations in Guangzhou can be reduced by 50% (i.e., 160 weather stations) while retaining the model performance. This study proposes and demonstrates an effective model for obtaining city-scale air temperature at high spatio-temporal resolution with data from sparse weather stations, which is much needed for cities which want to enhance their city-scale air temperature mapping by complementing new weather stations to their existing weather station network.

Abstract:Cities are increasingly confronted with multiple environmental and climatic stressors. Especially during heatwaves, street canyons are both producers and sufferers of air pollution and urban heat island (UHI) effects, with severe risks on public health. To better design mitigation measures, it is important to consider both the microclimate behaviors as well as the perceptions of the local population. Therefore, this study examined pedestrian perceptions and microclimate modelings to understand outdoor thermal comfort conditions and air pollution dispersion in the case study neighborhood of Dortmund Marten, Germany. A field survey with measurement points at two street canyons for climatic variables and questionnaires on subjective thermal comfort and air pollution was conducted on a hot day during the heatwave period in August 2020. As a cost-effective method for modeling input generation, we extracted spatial and spectral data like albedo, roof materials and tree locations out of remote sensing imageries. Finally, we compared the modeling results of the physiological equivalent temperature (PET) index, particulate matter concentrations and air temperatures with empirical field measurement data and the questionnaire responses. Results indicate that during hot summer days with light winds from the east, the north-south orientated street canyon with tree arrangements tends to act as a tunnel for particulate matter accumulation. Coincidently, pedestrians show less thermal discomfort than calculated PET values in that particular area during morning and daytime, which underlines the dichotomy of such places. On the other hand, the low rise east-west orientated street canyon shows higher PET votes than predicted by the model. However, particulate matter concentrations were considerably underestimated by the model, while air temperature predictions provided meaningful results. The proposed workflow shows the potential to accelerate future preparations of input data for microclimate modelings, while the results can enhance wind-sensitive planning procedures and heat stress resilience in mid-latitude urban neighborhoods.
