Abstract:The brown marmorated stink bug, Halyomorpha halys, is considered a serious invasive species capable of causing significant agricultural and nuisance problems. Researchers in the USA recently identified the two-component H. halys aggregation pheromone from populations in North America and found that when it is combined with the pheromone synergist methyl decatrienoate (MDT), it resulted in reliable, season-long captures of H. halys throughout the USA. However, no study has assessed whether H. halys populations in the native range are attracted to and can also be reliably captured by the combination of these stimuli. In this study, our goal was to evaluate the response of H. halys adults, nymphs, and non-target organisms to traps baited with the aggregation pheromone, MDT alone, or in combination at three locations in the native range. Traps baited with combined stimuli reliably captured the greatest numbers of H. halys adults and nymphs, and traps baited with either lure treatment caught a unique community of non-target organisms. In addition, Plautia stali was cross-attracted to the H. halys aggregation pheromone. Overall, we demonstrate that the pheromone-based tools developed in the USA may be used for worldwide detection and surveillance programs for H. halys and P. stali.

Abstract:Conservation biological control aims to enhance natural enemy populations in crop habitats, e.g. by providing flowering plants as food resources. Suitable flower species must enhance the survival and fecundity of natural enemies but in addition they also need to be highly attractive and thus frequently visited. To date, few examples exist that have considered both criteria. In this study, we tested the effects of the flowering plants alyssum (Lobularia maritima), buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum), French marigold (Tagetes patula) and sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum) on the fecundity and olfactory attractiveness of the egg parasitoid Trissolcus basalis, an important biological control agent of the stink bug Nezara viridula. Our results showed that access to buckwheat and basil flowers increased the parasitoid offspring. However, in olfactometer experiments where T. basalis was allowed to choose between flowering and non-flowering plants, only buckwheat floral scent was attractive. Headspace analyses of the odour emitted by the four plant species revealed very distinct profiles with little overlap in compounds. Buckwheat floral scent was characterized by an unpleasant smell for the human nose due to the presence of short-chain carboxylic acids. Headspace extracts of buckwheat flowers and a blend of six buckwheat plant volatiles consisting of butanoic, 2-methylbutanoic, 3-methylbutanoic and pentanoic acids, (Z)-3-hexenyl acetate and α-farnesene were significantly attractive in olfactometer bioassays. Furthermore, electrophysiological experiments showed most of these compounds elicited significant responses in T. basalis antennae. Integrating chemo-ecological methods into conservation biological control allowed us to identify a potential resource plant and attractive compounds for field studies.

Abstract:Capture strategies for the brown marmorated stink bug, Halyomorpha halys (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), are challenging. Here we developed and evaluated a multimodal trap which combines visual and olfactory stimuli. Visual stimuli consisted of LEDs emitting UV-A and visible light. Olfactory stimuli were comprised of the synthetic aggregation pheromone and odours from trapped H. halys individuals. Stink bug attraction at different wavelengths was evaluated in laboratory two-choice bioassays, and different prototypes of the trap were tested in 2021 in natural, agricultural, and urban settings. Traps with a combination of UV-A and blue or green visible wavelengths provided higher H. halys attraction (up to ~8-fold) compared to traditional sticky or small pyramidal traps. The concurrent presence of synthetic pheromone and LED had a synergistic effect on H. halys positive phototaxis. Further development and implementation of the multimodal trap is discussed for prospective use in attract-and-kill or push-pull strategies.

Abstract:The invasive brown marmorated stink bug, Halyomorpha halys (Stål) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), has disrupted integrated pest management programs in agroecosystems including tree fruit in North America and several other regions worldwide. While the toolbox for managing the pest continues to grow, it has not yet been determined if feeding or oviposition by H. halys onto orchard or forest trees induces changes in volatiles emitted from trees that could be exploited by foraging egg parasitoids or other insects. The goal of this study was to investigate differences in volatile compound emissions from branches of potted peach and tree of heaven exposed directly and systemically to H. halys feeding and oviposition. Analyses indicate that H. halys feeding and oviposition induced changes in both the blend and specific amounts of volatile compounds emitted from both tree species. Tree of heaven branches directly exposed to H. halys oviposition and feeding emitted nerolidol at a higher rate than those exposed to feeding alone and control trees. Tree of heaven compound leaves systemically exposed to H. halys feeding alone emitted higher rates of (E)-4,8-dimethyl-1,3,7-nonatriene (DMNT) than trees exposed to oviposition and feeding or control trees. Conversely, for peach, both branches exposed directly or systemically resulted in a decrease in cis-3-hexenyl acetate when exposed to H. halys oviposition. Such changes in plant volatile compounds, or blends of compounds, have the potential to be used by foraging natural enemies of H. halys.

Abstract:Plant volatiles mediate the interactions within plant-insect communities and influence the distribution and behavior of insects. Natural enemies often utilize the volatiles that released from plants to locate the profitable patches for foraging. The lady beetle Harmonia axyridis (Pallas) is a dominant generalist predator of various pests in agriculture fields, yet little is known about the chemical cues which the predator employs to locate its prey. In this study, we tested the attractiveness of volatiles emanating from healthy and aphid-infested insectary plant Cnidium monnieri (L.) Cuss. to H. axyridis adults in a Y-tube olfactometer. Next, using coupled gas chromatography - electroantennogram detection (GC-EAD) and gas chromatography - mass spectrometry (GC-MS) identified the volatile components which elicited electrophysiological activity in H. axyridis adults. Lastly, Y-tube olfactometer tests in laboratory and field traps were used to verify the effectiveness of the volatile components. In olfactometer trials, H. axyridis adults preferred healthy and aphid-infested plants versus control. In GC-MS and GC-EAD trials, two antenna-active components (1,2-diethylbenzene and p-diethylbenzene) were detected among the volatile blends emanating from healthy and aphid-infested plants; and in ensuing behavioral assays, H. axyridis adults were attracted to two synthetic volatile compounds. Under field conditions, the number of H. axyridis adults as recorded in traps for two synthetic volatile components at three different concentrations (100mg/ml, 10mg/ml, and 1mg/ml) were significantly higher than those for mineral oil (control). These findings could provide an effective means for the cultivation of insectary plants to develop natural enemy attractants and support the biological control in the field.

Abstract:A series of field screening experiments were carried out to compare the effiency of different compositions of pheromone in capillary during the second generation of adults of Chilo suppressalis in 2007 in three sites,i.e.Hangzhou,Tonglu and Jiaxing,in Zhejiang province,China.The experiment used the water-pan trap and cylindric trap,and was in a complete randomized block design.The number of male moths trapped was counted daily to compare the trapping effect of different composition and dosage of pheromone constituents.The results showed that the blends coded as CS2007247A and CS2007247B were the most attractive to male moths of Chilo suppressalis.The trapping capability of the lure degraded as a negative power function with the increase of exposure date.

Abstract:Sunflowers (Helianthus annuus) are potential trap crops to attract the yellow peach moth (Conogethes punctiferalis) in orchards but the volatile compounds released from sunflowers and their effects on C. punctiferalis behaviour are not clear. Here we used solid phase micro‐extraction to collect volatiles released from flower disks of sunflowers, identified them by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry, and examined the attractiveness of some of the compounds to mated female adult C. punctiferalis moths in Y‐tube olfactometer choice tests. We detected nine volatile compounds (α‐Pinene, β‐Phellandrene, Camphene, β‐Pinene, 3‐Carene, D‐Limonene, Eucalyptol, γ‐Terpinen, and Valencene) with consistently large peak areas for α‐Pinene and β‐Phellandrene. Among tested volatiles, both α‐Pinene and β‐Phellandrene were attractive to C. punctiferalis in olfactometer tests but this was only significant for higher concentrations of β‐Phellandrene. This suggests that β‐Phellandrene may promote C. punctiferalis oviposition on sunflower disks. This study provides insights into volatile chemical mediated responses of insect herbivores to trap crops.

Abstract:Host plant choice is of vital importance for egg laying herbivorous insects that do not exhibit brood care. Several aspects, including palatability, nutritional quality and predation risk, have been found to modulate host preference. Olfactory cues are thought to enable host location. However, experimental data on odor features that allow choosing among alternative hosts while still in flight are not available. It has previously been shown that M. sexta females prefer Datura wrightii compared to Nicotiana attenuata. The bouquet of the latter is more intense and contains compounds typically emitted by plants after feeding-damage to attract the herbivore's enemies. In this wind tunnel study, we offered female gravid hawkmoths (Manduca sexta) odors from these two ecologically relevant, attractive, non-flowering host species. M. sexta females preferred surrogate leaves scented with vegetative odors form both host species to unscented control leaves. Given a choice between species, females preferred the odor bouquet emitted by D. wrightii to that of N. attenuata. Harmonizing, i.e. adjusting, volatile intensity to similar levels did not abolish but significantly weakened this preference. Superimposing, i.e. mixing, the highly attractive headspaces of both species, however, abolished discrimination between scented and non-scented surrogate leaves. Beyond ascertaining the role of blend composition in host plant choice, our results raise the following hypotheses. (i) The odor of a host species is perceived as a discrete odor 'Gestalt', and its core properties are lost upon mixing two attractive scents (ii). Stimulus intensity is a secondary feature affecting olfactory-based host choice (iii). Constitutively smelling like a plant that is attracting herbivore enemies may be part of a plant's strategy to avoid herbivory where alternative hosts are available to the herbivore.

Abstract:The spotted lanternfly (SLF), Lycorma delicatula (Hemiptera: Fulgoridae), is a generalist phloem feeder that produces copious amounts of honeydew, which in turn coats the understory. These insects form large aggregations covering the trunks of some trees, while similar trees nearby mysteriously seem unattractive. We investigated whether volatiles from SLF honeydew are attractive to conspecifics by collecting honeydew from the field and testing it for SLF attraction in a two-choice olfactometer. We found that honeydew excreted by adult male SLF was significantly attractive to male SLF, but not female SLF. Although the honeydew excreted by adult female SLF did not significantly attract male or female SLF, both sexes showed a positive trend towards attraction in response to female honeydew in the olfactometer. Analysis of the headspace volatiles of honeydew was conducted, and numerous semiochemicals were identified. Five of which, 2-heptanone, 2-octanone, 2-nonanone, benzyl acetate, and 1-nonanol, were tested in two-choice behavioral assays against a blank control. Benzyl acetate and 2-octanone were attractive to both sexes, whereas 2-heptanone was only attractive to males, and 2-nonanone only to females. The remaining compound, 1-nonanol, repelled females, but not males. Although honeydew has been reported as a source of kairomones for some natural enemies, this may be the first report of sex-specific attractants for conspecific insects found in the honeydew volatiles of a planthopper.

Abstract:The emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from plants is associated with biotic and abiotic stress and depends on the plant species, organs, and developmental stage. Insects use VOCs to locate their host plants and their behavior is heavily influenced by the chemical profile of each at its current phenological stage. The brown marmorated stink bug Halyomorpha halys (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) is a highly polyphagous pest that causes significant damage to tree, vegetable, and ornamental crops worldwide. The volatile profiles of five hosts of H. halys were compared for common substances to provide insight into this insect's extreme polyphagy. Headspace collection of volatile substances was performed for five hosts of H. halys by gas chromatography – mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and their VOC profiles were compared. The results show that, although the volatile profiles of the host plants differ substantially, 13 out of the 68 identified compounds were shared. These results suggest that host recognition by H. halys is likely driven by a combination of attractive and possibly repellent compounds that work synergistically which is the first step toward decoding this pest's polyphagous nature.

Abstract:Abstract— We compared the induction of pyrimidine dimer densities after UV‐irradiation in mouse melanoma cells before and after treatment with cholera toxin. Treatment with cholera toxin stimulated tyrosinase activity up to 50‐fold, leading to a marked, visually apparent increase in cellular melanin concentrations. Irradiation of treated and untreated cells was therefore designed to establish whether intracellular melanin protected cells from UV‐induced DNA damage. In experiments described here, we determined cytosine‐thymine (C‐T) as well as thymine‐thymine dimer levels (T‐T) by high pressure liquid chromatography in cholera toxin‐treated and untreated Cloudman S91 mouse melanoma cells after irradiation with UVC (< 290 ran) and UVB light (290‐320 nm). Surprisingly, induction of melanization had no effect on the formation of pyrimidine dimers by UVC or UVB irradiation. These results indicate that de novo melanin pigmentation induced via the c‐AMP pathway is not involved in protection against UV‐induced thymine‐containing pyrimidine dimers. In separate experiments, irradiation of toxin‐treated and untreated mouse melanoma cells with UVC or UVB light produced a20–30% lower dimer density compared to irradiated human skin fibroblasts. This finding suggests that melanin has some protection properties against UV‐induced pyrimidine dimers, although the exact defense mechanism seems highly complex.
Development of Lady Beetle Attractants from Floral Volatiles and Other Semiochemicals for the Biological Control of Aphids

Abstract:Aphids are among the most destructive phytophagous pests of host plants, because of their rapid reproduction, parthenogenesis, extensive crop damage, and the transmission of many plant viruses. Since lady beetles are important predatory natural enemies of aphids, developing lady beetle attractants to increase their field abundance is vital for aphid control. Floral volatiles and other semiochemicals are reportedly attractive to lady beetles. In this research, a total of 58 floral volatiles were tested by Y-tube olfactometer assays, among which 29 were highly attractive to both Harmonia axyridis (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) and Coccinella septempunctata (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae). Meanwhile, the results of wind tunnel trials showed that only isoamyl acetate, ahumulene, trans-3-hexen-1-ol, methyl salicylate, and beta-pinene lure these two species. Thereafter, 15 semiochemicals from pests, natural enemies, and pest-infested crops were mixed with the selected floral volatiles, to determine optimum formulations for attracting lady beetles through wind tunnels and further field trials. Eventually, formulas (1) alpha-humulene: beta-pinene: methyl salicylate: trans-3-hexen-l-ol = 1:3:3:10; (5) alpha-humulene: beta-pinene: methyl salicylate:1-nonanal = 1:3:3:10; (8) alpha-humulene: beta-pinene: methyl salicylate: indole = 1:3:3:10 (1, 5, and 8 are labels used for the various formulations in field trials) were successfully verified to be attractive to lady beetles in both pumpkin and wheat fields. These formulations will be of great significance in developing integrated pest management strategies for aphid control.
Plant Volatiles Increase Sex Pheromone Attraction of Holotrichia parallela (Coleoptera: Scarabaeoidea)

Abstract:Holotrichia parallela (Coleoptera: Scarabaeoidea) is a notorious pest of many crops. To improve the effectiveness of its female-produced sex pheromone (L-isoleucine methyl ester:(R)-(−)-linalool = 6:1), 14 plant volatiles, including dodecanoic acid, dodecanal, farnesol, α-farnesene, (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol, (E)-2-hexen-1-ol, (Z)-3-hexenyl acetate, (E)-2-hexenyl acetate, (R)-(+)-limonene, α-phellandrene, α-pinene, ocimene, methyl benzoate, and benzaldehyde, were individually evaluated using electroantennography and olfactometer assays. (E)-2-Hexenyl acetate and (Z)-3-hexenyl acetate were found to elicit the strongest responses in both males and females. Further testing of these two compounds in mixtures with the sex pheromone indicated that (E)-2-hexenyl acetate had a stronger synergistic effect than (Z)-3-hexenyl acetate. Field evaluations showed that mixtures of (E)-2-hexenyl acetate and the sex pheromone resulted in significantly higher catches than the sex pheromone alone. Using a 5:1 mixture of the sex pheromone and (E)-2-hexenyl acetate, the maximum number of females per trap per day was 14, showing a synergistic effect of a factor of four. For males, a 3:1 mixture of the sex pheromone and (E)-2-hexenyl acetate yielded a maximum number of 310 individuals per trap per day, equivalent to a synergistic effect of 175%. These results may provide the basis for the development of efficient pest management systems against H. parallela using plant volatiles and insect sex pheromones.

Effects of aphid-induced semiochemicals from cover plants on Harmonia axyridis (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae)

Abstract:Background: Harmonia axyridis Pallas (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) is an important natural enemy of aphids. Plant species and plant health conditions can affect the behavior of H. axyridis. To determine plant effects on this lady beetle, we examined beetle responses to four cover crops: coriander (Coriadrum sativum L., Apiales: Apiaceae), marigold (Tagetes erecta L., Asterales: Asteraceae), sweet alyssum (Lobularia maritima L., Brassicales: Brassicaceae), and alfalfa (Medicago sativa L., Fabales: Fabaceae). Our goal was to better understand this predator's ovipositional behavior in response to different plants and its olfactory response to the aphid-induced volatiles from these plants. Results: We found that this lady beetle did not have any significant oviposition preference among the four plant species, but H. axyridis preferred to lay eggs on the lower surface of leaves, regardless of the plant species. H. axyridis females had a significant preference for aphid-infested marigolds, but were not attracted by any of the other three cover plants or marigolds without aphid damage. Compared to the uninfested marigold plants, the emission of 12 compounds significantly increased on the aphid-infested marigolds, and two of them were attractive to H. axyridis under suitable concentrations. Conclusion: H. axyridis did not show any significant oviposition preference among the four cover crops. Aphid-infested marigolds can attract H. axyridis. Indole and terpinen-4-ol mediated lady beetle attraction. These synomones have potential for manipulating populations of H. axyridis as a component of conservation biological control. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract:In this study, the mutual information between the state sequence and the measurements is proposed as an observability measure and this measure is analyzed in detail for linear time invariant discrete-time Gaussian systems. The following results are found as the two basic properties of the measure from the analyses; the unobservable states of the deterministic system have no effect on it. So the measure proposed here is an observability measure of observable states. Secondly, any observable part with no measurement uncertainty makes the measure infinite.
Responses of Adult Hypera rumicis L. to Synthetic Plant Volatile Blends

Abstract:The behavioral responses of Hypera rumicis L. adults to varying blends of synthetic plant volatiles (SPVs) at various concentrations in lieu of single compounds are reported for the first time. For this study, Rumex confertus plants were treated with two blends of SPVs at different quantities that act as either attractants or repellents to insects. Blend 1 (B1) consisted of five green leaf volatiles (GLVs), namely (Z)-3-hexenal, (E)-2-hexenal, (Z)-3-hexenol, (E)-2-hexenol, and (Z)-3-hexen-1-yl acetate. Blend 2 (B2) contained six plant volatiles, namely (Z)-ocimene, linalool, benzyl acetate, methyl salicylate, β-caryophyllene, and (E)-β-farnesene. Each blend was made available in four different amounts of volatiles, corresponding to each compound being added to 50 μL of hexane in amounts of 1, 5, 25 and 125 ng. The effects of the two blends at the different concentrations on the insects were evaluated using a Y-tube olfactometer. Both sexes of the insects were found to be significantly repelled by the highest volatile levels of B1 and by two levels of B2 (25 and 125 ng). Females were also observed to be repelled using B2 with 5 ng of each volatile. Attraction was observed for both sexes only for B1 at the three lower volatile levels (1, 5 and 25 ng). In additional experiments, using only attractants, unmated females were found to be attracted to males, whereas mated females were only attracted to B1. Both unmated and mated males (previously observed in copula) were attracted only to females.

Abstract:Abstract Evaluation of combinations of flower odor compounds in the field revealed several compounds that were attractive or co‐attractive with phenylacetaldehyde (PAA) to pest noctuid and pyralid moths. A number of moth species responded positively to the key floral odorant PAA. The floral odorants cis ‐jasmone, linalool, benzyl acetate, limonene, β‐myrcene, methyl salicylate, and methyl 2‐methoxybenzoate all increased captures of some moths when added to traps with PAA, but responses varied among the moth species that were trapped. For example, soybean looper moths, Pseudoplusia includens (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), most strongly responded to PAA + β‐myrcene, but benzyl acetate, cis ‐jasmone, and limonene also increased captures of these moths when these compounds were used in traps along with PAA. Velvetbean caterpillar moths, Anticarsia gemmatalis Hübner (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), responded most strongly to PAA + linalool, but β‐myrcene, cis ‐jasmone, and limonene also increased captures of these moths in traps over numbers trapped with PAA. Positive responses to floral compound blends were also noted for golden looper [ Argyrogramma verruca (F.)], grass looper [ Mocis disseverans (Walker)], tobacco budworm [ Heliothis virescens (F.)], southern armyworm [ Spodoptera eridania (Stoll) (all Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)], and melonworm [ Diaphania hyalinata (L.) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae)]. Overall, PAA + β‐myrcene appeared to be the strongest floral compound combination for pest species trapped, compared to PAA or other compound blends.

Abstract:Thrips, Frankliniella intonsa, is a highly polyphagous pest with a worldwide distribution. F. intonsa-infested sunflower seeds show marked visual damage. The study findings revealed that significantly more F. intonsa infested confection sunflower compared to oilseed sunflower, via olfactometer bioassay studies, we found that compared with the flower and pollen of oilseed sunflowers, those of confection sunflowers attract F. intonsa. Considering this discrepancy in the preference of F. intonsa on oilseed and confection sunflowers, the volatiles of the flower and pollens of two sunflowers were analysed by gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy. The behavioural responses of F. intonsa were assessed for these compounds using Y-tube bioassays. Geranyl bromide, a unique volatile component of oilseed sunflowers, induced an assertive approach-avoidance behaviour in F. intonsa, whereas the unique component ethyl isovalerate in confection sunflowers attracted F. intonsa. F. intonsa adults demonstrated significant attraction to the blends of confection sunflowers. Furthermore, field verification revealed that intercropping confection and oilseed sunflowers could effectively control F. intonsa. The study provided insights into the chemical cues used by F. intonsa in locating hosts. Therefore, oilseed sunflowers can be used as repellent plants to prevent F. intonsa invasion.

Abstract:By emitting scent resembling that of organic material suitable for oviposition and/or consumption by flies, sapromyophilous flowers use these flies as pollinators. To date, intensive scent analyses of such flowers have been restricted to Apocynaceae, Annonaceae, and Araceae. Recent studies have suggested that the wide range of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from sapromyophilous flowers play an important role in attracting saprophagous flies by mimicking different types of decomposing substrates (herbivore and carnivore feces, carrion, and the fruiting bodies of fungi, etc.). In this study, we report the flower visitors and the floral VOCs of Stemona japonica (Blume) Miquel, a species native to China. The flowers do not produce rewards, and pollinators were not observed consuming pollen, thus suggesting a deceptive pollination system. Headspace samples of the floral scent were collected via solid-phase micro-extraction and analysed by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. Main floral scent compounds were 1-pyrroline (59.2 %), 2-methyl-1-butanol (27.2 %), and 3-methyl-1-butanol (8.8 %), and resulted in a semen-like odor of blooming flowers. The floral constituents of S. japonica were significantly different from those found in previous sapromyophilous plants. An olfaction test indicated that 1-pyrroline is responsible for the semen-like odor in S. japonica flowers. Main flower visitors were shoot flies of the genus Atherigona (Muscidae). Bioassays using a mixture of all identified floral volatiles revealed that the synthetic volatiles can attract Atherigona flies in natural habitats. Our results suggest that the foul-smelling flowers of S. japonica may represent a new type of sapromyophily through scent mimicry.
