Abstract:In this paper we theoretically study the MINIMUM RANGE ASSIGNMENT problem in static ad-hoc networks with arbitrary structure, where the transmission distances can violate triangle inequality. We consider two versions of the MINIMUM RANGE ASSIGNMENT problem, where the communication graph has to fulfill either the h-strong connectivity condition (MIN-RANGE(h-SC)) or the h-broadcast condition (MIN-RANGE(h-B)). Both homogeneous and non-homogeneous cases are studied. By approximating arbitrary edge-weighted graphs by paths, we present probabilistic O(log n)-approximation algorithms for MIN-RANGE(h-SC) and MIN-RANGE(h-B), which improves the previous best ratios O(log n log log n) and O(n(2) log n log log n), respectively [D. Furthermore, we show that if the network fulfils certain property and the distance power gradient a is sufficiently small, the approximation ratio is improved to O((log log n)(alpha)). Abstract:Let 𝒟 be a set of n elements e_1,… , e_n drawn from a commutative semigroup. Given two integers x , y satisfying 1 ≤ x ≤ y ≤ n , a range sum query returns the sum of the y-x+1 elements e_x , e_x+1 ,..., e_y . The goal of indexing is to store 𝒟 in a data structure so that all such queries can be answered efficiently in the worst case. This paper proves a new lower bound in the semigroup model on the tradeoff between space and query time for the above problem. We show that, if the query time needs to be at most an integer t , a structure must use space. The bound is asymptotically tight for every t ≥ 2 , and is matched by an existing structure. Previously, the best lower bounds either had a substantially smaller non-linear factor (Yao in Space-time tradeoff for answering range queries (extended abstract). In: STOC, pp. 128–136, 1982 ), or were tight only for constant t (Alon and Schieber in Optimal preprocessing for answering on-line product queries. Technical Report TR 71/87, Tel-Aviv University, 1987 ). Our lower bound is asymptotically tight bidirectionally , namely, it also answers the following question: if the space needs to be bounded by an integer m , what is the best query time achievable? The techniques behind our lower bound are drastically different from those of Yao (Space-time tradeoff for answering range queries (extended abstract). Graph Spanners for Group Steiner Distances

Abstract:A spanner is a sparse subgraph of a given graph $G$ which preserves distances, measured w.r.t.\ some distance metric, up to a multiplicative stretch factor. This paper addresses the problem of constructing graph spanners w.r.t.\ the group Steiner metric, which generalizes the recently introduced beer distance metric. In such a metric we are given a collection of groups of required vertices, and we measure the distance between two vertices as the length of the shortest path between them that traverses at least one required vertex from each group. We discuss the relation between group Steiner spanners and classic spanners and we show that they exhibit strong ties with sourcewise spanners w.r.t.\ the shortest path metric. Nevertheless, group Steiner spanners capture several interesting scenarios that are not encompassed by existing spanners. This happens, e.g., for the singleton case, in which each group consists of a single required vertex, thus modeling the setting in which routes need to traverse certain points of interests (in any order). We provide several constructions of group Steiner spanners for both the all-pairs and single-source case, which exhibit various size-stretch trade-offs. Notably, we provide spanners with almost-optimal trade-offs for the singleton case. Moreover, some of our spanners also yield novel trade-offs for classical sourcewise spanners. Finally, we also investigate the query times that can be achieved when our spanners are turned into group Steiner distance oracles with the same size, stretch, and building time.

Abstract:Span programs are an important model of quantum computation due to their tight correspondence with quantum query complexity. For any decision problem $f$, the minimum complexity of a span program for $f$ is equal, up to a constant factor, to the quantum query complexity of $f$. Moreover, this correspondence is constructive. A span program for $f$ with complexity $C$ can be compiled into a bounded error quantum algorithm for $f$ with query complexity $O(C)$, and vice versa. In this work, we prove an analogous connection for quantum time complexity. In particular, we show how to convert a quantum algorithm for $f$ with time complexity $T$ into a span program for $f$ such that it compiles back into a quantum algorithm for $f$ with time complexity $\widetilde{O}(T)$. While the query complexity of quantum algorithms obtained from span programs is well-understood, it is not generally clear how to implement certain query-independent operations in a time-efficient manner. We show that for span programs derived from algorithms with a time-efficient implementation, we can preserve the time efficiency when implementing the span program. This means in particular that span programs not only fully capture quantum query complexity, but also quantum time complexity. One practical advantage of being able to convert quantum algorithms to span programs in a way that preserves time complexity is that span programs compose very nicely. We demonstrate this by improving Ambainis's variable-time quantum search result using our construction through a span program composition for the OR function.
Spanning Adjacency Oracles in Sublinear Time

Abstract:Suppose we are given an $n$-node, $m$-edge input graph $G$, and the goal is to compute a spanning subgraph $H$ on $O(n)$ edges. This can be achieved in linear $O(m + n)$ time via breadth-first search. But can we hope for \emph{sublinear} runtime in some range of parameters? If the goal is to return $H$ as an adjacency list, there are simple lower bounds showing that $\Omega(m + n)$ runtime is necessary. If the goal is to return $H$ as an adjacency matrix, then we need $\Omega(n^2)$ time just to write down the entries of the output matrix. However, we show that neither of these lower bounds still apply if instead the goal is to return $H$ as an \emph{implicit} adjacency matrix, which we call an \emph{adjacency oracle}. An adjacency oracle is a data structure that gives a user the illusion that an adjacency matrix has been computed: it accepts edge queries $(u, v)$, and it returns in near-constant time a bit indicating whether $(u, v) \in E(H)$. Our main result is that one can construct an adjacency oracle for a spanning subgraph on at most $(1+\varepsilon)n$ edges, in $\tilde{O}(n \varepsilon^{-1})$ time, and that this construction time is near-optimal. Additional results include constructions of adjacency oracles for $k$-connectivity certificates and spanners, which are similarly sublinear on dense-enough input graphs. Our adjacency oracles are closely related to Local Computation Algorithms (LCAs) for graph sparsifiers; they can be viewed as LCAs with some computation moved to a preprocessing step, in order to speed up queries. Our oracles imply the first Local algorithm for computing sparse spanning subgraphs of general input graphs in $\tilde{O}(n)$ query time, which works by constructing our adjacency oracle, querying it once, and then throwing the rest of the oracle away. This addresses an open problem of Rubinfeld [CSR '17].

Abstract:We study the query version of the approximate heavy hitter and quantile problems. In the former problem, the input is a parameter $\varepsilon$ and a set $P$ of $n$ points in $\mathbb{R}^d$ where each point is assigned a color from a set $C$, and we want to build a structure s.t. given any geometric range $\gamma$, we can efficiently find a list of approximate heavy hitters in $\gamma\cap P$, i.e., colors that appear at least $\varepsilon |\gamma \cap P|$ times in $\gamma \cap P$, as well as their frequencies with an additive error of $\varepsilon |\gamma \cap P|$. In the latter problem, each point is assigned a weight from a totally ordered universe and the query must output a sequence $S$ of $1+1/\varepsilon$ weights s.t. the $i$-th weight in $S$ has approximate rank $i\varepsilon|\gamma\cap P|$, meaning, rank $i\varepsilon|\gamma\cap P|$ up to an additive error of $\varepsilon|\gamma\cap P|$. Previously, optimal results were only known in 1D [WY11] but a few sub-optimal methods were available in higher dimensions [AW17, ACH+12]. We study the problems for 3D halfspace and dominance queries. We consider the real RAM model with integer registers of size $w=\Theta(\log n)$ bits. For dominance queries, we show optimal solutions for both heavy hitter and quantile problems: using linear space, we can answer both queries in time $O(\log n + 1/\varepsilon)$. Note that as the output size is $\frac{1}{\varepsilon}$, after investing the initial $O(\log n)$ searching time, our structure takes on average $O(1)$ time to find a heavy hitter or a quantile! For more general halfspace heavy hitter queries, the same optimal query time can be achieved by increasing the space by an extra $\log_w\frac{1}{\varepsilon}$ (resp. $\log\log_w\frac{1}{\varepsilon}$) factor in 3D (resp. 2D). By spending extra $\log^{O(1)}\frac{1}{\varepsilon}$ factors in time and space, we can also support quantile queries.

Map-Matching Queries under Fréchet Distance on Low-Density Spanners

Abstract:Map matching is a common task when analysing GPS tracks, such as vehicle trajectories. The goal is to match a recorded noisy polygonal curve to a path on the map, usually represented as a geometric graph. The Fréchet distance is a commonly used metric for curves, making it a natural fit. The map-matching problem is well-studied, yet until recently no-one tackled the data structure question: preprocess a given graph so that one can query the minimum Fréchet distance between all graph paths and a polygonal curve. Recently, Gudmundsson, Seybold, and Wong [SODA 2023, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2211.02951" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2211.02951">arXiv:2211.02951</a>] studied this problem for arbitrary query polygonal curves and $c$-packed graphs. In this paper, we instead require the graphs to be $\lambda$-low-density $t$-spanners, which is significantly more representative of real-world networks. We also show how to report a path that minimises the distance efficiently rather than only returning the minimal distance, which was stated as an open problem in their paper.

In-Range Farthest Point Queries and Related Problem in High Dimensions

Abstract:Range-aggregate query is an important type of queries with numerous applications. It aims to obtain some structural information (defined by an aggregate function $F(\cdot)$) of the points (from a point set $P$) inside a given query range $B$. In this paper, we study the range-aggregate query problem in high dimensional space for two aggregate functions: (1) $F(P \cap B)$ is the farthest point in $P \cap B$ to a query point $q$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$ and (2) $F(P \cap B)$ is the minimum enclosing ball (MEB) of $P \cap B$. For problem (1), called In-Range Farthest Point (IFP) Query, we develop a bi-criteria approximation scheme: For any $\epsilon>0$ that specifies the approximation ratio of the farthest distance and any $\gamma>0$ that measures the "fuzziness" of the query range, we show that it is possible to pre-process $P$ into a data structure of size $\tilde{O}_{\epsilon,\gamma}(dn^{1+\rho})$ in $\tilde{O}_{\epsilon,\gamma}(dn^{1+\rho})$ time such that given any $\mathbb{R}^d$ query ball $B$ and query point $q$, it outputs in $\tilde{O}_{\epsilon,\gamma}(dn^{\rho})$ time a point $p$ that is a $(1-\epsilon)$-approximation of the farthest point to $q$ among all points lying in a $(1+\gamma)$-expansion $B(1+\gamma)$ of $B$, where $0<\rho<1$ is a constant depending on $\epsilon$ and $\gamma$ and the hidden constants in big-O notations depend only on $\epsilon$, $\gamma$ and $\text{Polylog}(nd)$. For problem (2), we show that the IFP result can be applied to develop query scheme with similar time and space complexities to achieve a $(1+\epsilon)$-approximation for MEB.

Set-Difference Range Queries

Abstract:We introduce the problem of performing set-difference range queries, where answers to queries are set-theoretic symmetric differences between sets of items in two geometric ranges. We describe a general framework for answering such queries based on a novel use of data-streaming sketches we call signed symmetric-difference sketches. We show that such sketches can be realized using invertible Bloom filters (IBFs), which can be composed, differenced, and searched so as to solve set-difference range queries in a wide range of scenarios.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, Volume 38, Issue 1, Page 1030-1056, March 2024. Given a metric space [math], a weighted graph [math] over [math] is a metric [math]-spanner of [math] if for every [math], [math], where [math] is the shortest path metric in [math]. In this paper, we construct spanners for finite sets in metric spaces in the online setting. Here, we are given a sequence of points [math], where the points are presented one at a time (i.e., after [math] steps, we see [math]). The algorithm is allowed to add edges to the spanner when a new point arrives; however, it is not allowed to remove any edge from the spanner. The goal is to maintain a [math]-spanner [math] for [math] for all [math], while minimizing the number of edges, and their total weight. We construct online [math]-spanners in the Euclidean [math]-space, [math]-spanners for general metrics, and [math]-spanners for ultrametrics. Most notably, in the Euclidean plane, we construct a [math]-spanner with competitive ratio [math], bypassing the classic lower bound [math] for lightness, which compares the weight of the spanner to that of the minimum spanning tree.

Small Spans in Scaled Dimension

Abstract:Juedes and Lutz (1995) proved a small span theorem for polynomial-time many-one reductions in exponential time. This result says that for language A decidable in exponential time, either the class of languages reducible to A (the lower span) or the class of problems to which A can be reduced (the upper span) is small in the sense of resource-bounded measure and, in particular, that the degree of A is small. Small span theorems have been proven for increasingly stronger polynomial-time reductions, and a small span theorem for polynomial-time Turing reductions would imply BPP != EXP. In contrast to the progress in resource-bounded measure, Ambos-Spies, Merkle, Reimann, and Stephan (2001) showed that there is no small span theorem for the resource-bounded dimension of Lutz (2000), even for polynomial-time many-one reductions. Resource-bounded scaled dimension, recently introduced by Hitchcock, Lutz, and Mayordomo (2003), provides rescalings of resource-bounded dimension. We use scaled dimension to further understand the contrast between measure and dimension regarding polynomial-time spans and degrees. We strengthen prior results by showing that the small span theorem holds for polynomial-time many-one reductions in the -3rd-order scaled dimension, but fails to hold in the -2nd-order scaled dimension. Our results also hold in exponential space. As an application, we show that determining the -2nd- or -1st-order scaled dimension in ESPACE of the many-one complete languages for E would yield a proof of P = BPP or P != PSPACE. On the other hand, it is shown unconditionally that the complete languages for E have -3rd-order scaled dimension 0 in ESPACE and -2nd- and -1st-order scaled dimension 1 in E.

The Complexity of Geodesic Spanners

Abstract:A geometric $t$-spanner for a set $S$ of $n$ point sites is an edge-weighted graph for which the (weighted) distance between any two sites $p,q \in S$ is at most $t$ times the original distance between $p$ and~$q$. We study geometric $t$-spanners for point sets in a constrained two-dimensional environment $P$. In such cases, the edges of the spanner may have non-constant complexity. Hence, we introduce a novel spanner property: the spanner complexity, that is, the total complexity of all edges in the spanner. Let $S$ be a set of $n$ point sites in a simple polygon $P$ with $m$ vertices. We present an algorithm to construct, for any fixed integer $k \geq 1$, a $2\sqrt{2}k$-spanner with complexity $O(mn^{1/k} + n\log^2 n)$ in $O(n\log^2n + m\log n + K)$ time, where $K$ denotes the output complexity. When we relax the restriction that the edges in the spanner are shortest paths, such that an edge in the spanner can be any path between two sites, we obtain for any constant $\varepsilon \in (0,2k)$ a relaxed geodesic $(2k + \varepsilon)$-spanner of the same complexity, where the constant is dependent on $\varepsilon$. When we consider sites in a polygonal domain $P$ with holes, we can construct a relaxed geodesic $6k$-spanner of complexity $O(mn^{1/k} + n\log^2 n)$ in $O((n+m)\log^2n\log m+ K)$ time. Additionally, for any constant $\varepsilon \in (0,1)$ and integer constant $t \geq 2$, we show a lower bound for the complexity of any $(t-\varepsilon)$-spanner of $\Omega(mn^{1/(t-1)} + n)$.

Directed Spanners via Flow-Based Linear Programs

Abstract:We examine directed spanners through flow-based linear programming relaxations. We design an $Õ(n^{2/3})$-approximation algorithm for the directed $k$-spanner problem that works for all $k\geq 1$, which is the first sublinear approximation for arbitrary edge-lengths. Even in the more restricted setting of unit edge-lengths, our algorithm improves over the previous $Õ(n^{1-1/k})$ approximation of Bhattacharyya et al. when $k\ge 4$. For the special case of $k=3$ we design a different algorithm achieving an $Õ(\sqrt{n})$-approximation, improving the previous $Õ(n^{2/3})$. Both of our algorithms easily extend to the fault-tolerant setting, which has recently attracted attention but not from an approximation viewpoint. We also prove a nearly matching integrality gap of $\Omega(n^{\frac13 - \epsilon})$ for any constant $\epsilon > 0$. A virtue of all our algorithms is that they are relatively simple. Technically, we introduce a new yet natural flow-based relaxation, and show how to approximately solve it even when its size is not polynomial. The main challenge is to design a rounding scheme that "coordinates" the choices of flow-paths between the many demand pairs while using few edges overall. We achieve this, roughly speaking, by randomization at the level of vertices.

Spanoids - an abstraction of spanning structures, and a barrier for LCCs

Abstract:We introduce a simple logical inference structure we call a $\textsf{spanoid}$ (generalizing the notion of a matroid), which captures well-studied problems in several areas. These include combinatorial geometry, algebra (arrangements of hypersurfaces and ideals), statistical physics (bootstrap percolation) and coding theory. We initiate a thorough investigation of spanoids, from computational and structural viewpoints, focusing on parameters relevant to the applications areas above and, in particular, to questions regarding Locally Correctable Codes (LCCs). One central parameter we study is the $\textsf{rank}$ of a spanoid, extending the rank of a matroid and related to the dimension of codes. This leads to one main application of our work, establishing the first known barrier to improving the nearly 20-year old bound of Katz-Trevisan (KT) on the dimension of LCCs. On the one hand, we prove that the KT bound (and its more recent refinements) holds for the much more general setting of spanoid rank. On the other hand we show that there exist (random) spanoids whose rank matches these bounds. Thus, to significantly improve the known bounds one must step out of the spanoid framework. Another parameter we explore is the $\textsf{functional rank}$ of a spanoid, which captures the possibility of turning a given spanoid into an actual code. The question of the relationship between rank and functional rank is one of the main questions we raise as it may reveal new avenues for constructing new LCCs (perhaps even matching the KT bound). As a first step, we develop an entropy relaxation of functional rank to create a small constant gap and amplify it by tensoring to construct a spanoid whose functional rank is smaller than rank by a polynomial factor. This is evidence that the entropy method we develop can prove polynomially better bounds than KT-type methods on the dimension of LCCs.

Bounded-degree plane geometric spanners in practice

Abstract:The construction of bounded-degree plane geometric spanners has been a focus of interest since 2002 when Bose, Gudmundsson, and Smid proposed the first algorithm to construct such spanners. To date, eleven algorithms have been designed with various trade-offs in degree and stretch factor. We have implemented these sophisticated algorithms in C++ using the CGAL library and experimented with them using large synthetic and real-world pointsets. Our experiments have revealed their practical behavior and real-world efficacy. We share the implementations via GitHub for broader uses and future research. We present a simple practical algorithm, named AppxStretchFactor, that can estimate stretch factors (obtains lower bounds on the exact stretch factors) of geometric spanners - a challenging problem for which no practical algorithm is known yet. In our experiments with bounded-degree plane geometric spanners, we find that AppxStretchFactor estimates stretch factors almost precisely. Further, it gives linear runtime performance in practice for the pointset distributions considered in this work, making it much faster than the naive Dijkstra-based algorithm for calculating stretch factors

Z-ordered Range Refinement for Multi-dimensional Range Queries

Abstract:The z-order curve is a space-filling curve and is now attracting the interest of developers because of its simple and useful features. In the case of key-value stores, because the z-order curve achieves multi-dimensional range queries in one-dimensional z-ordered space, its use has been proposed for both academic and industrial purposes. However, z-ordered range queries suffer from wasteful query regions due to the properties of the z-order curve. Although previous studies have proposed refining z-ordered ranges, doing so is computationally expensive. In this paper, we propose z-ordered range refinement based on jump-in/out algorithms, and then we approximate z-ordered query regions to achieve efficient range refinement. Because the proposed method is lightweight and pluggable, it can be applied to various databases. We implemented our approach using PL/pgSQL in PostgreSQL and evaluated the performance of range refinement and multi-dimensional range queries. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed method.

Abstract:Given a set P of n uncertain points on the real line, each represented by its one-dimensional probability density function, we consider the problem of building data structures on P to answer range queries of the following three types for any query interval I: (1) top-1 query: find a point in P that lies in I with the highest probability, (2) top-k query: given any integer k≤n as part of the query, return the k points in P that lie in I with the highest probabilities, and (3) threshold query: given any threshold τ as part of the query, return all points of P that lie in I with probabilities at least τ. We present data structures for these range queries with linear or nearly linear space and efficient query time.

Abstract:A span of a given graph $G$ is the maximum distance that two players can keep at all times while visiting all vertices (edges) of $G$ and moving according to certain rules, that produce different variants of span. We prove that the vertex and edge span of the same variant can differ by at most 1 and present a graph where the difference is exactly 1. For all variants of vertex span we present a lower bound in terms of the girth of the graph. Then we study graphs with the strong vertex span equal to 1. We present some nice properties of such graphs and show that interval graphs are contained in the class of graphs having the strong vertex span equal to 1. Finally, we present an algorithm that returns the minimum number of moves needed such that both players traverse all vertices of the given graph $G$ such that in each move the distance between players equals at least the chosen span of $G$.

Abstract:{\em spanning configuration} in the complex vector space $\mathbb{C}^k$ is a sequence $(W_1, \dots, W_r)$ of linear subspaces of $\mathbb{C}^k$ such that $W_1 + \cdots + W_r = \mathbb{C}^k$. We present the integral cohomology of the moduli space of spanning configurations in $\mathbb{C}^k$ corresponding to a given sequence of subspace dimensions. This simultaneously generalizes the classical presentation of the cohomology of partial flag varieties and the more recent presentation of a variety of spanning line configurations defined by the author and Pawlowski. This latter variety of spanning line configurations plays the role of the flag variety for the Haglund-Remmel-Wilson Delta Conjecture of symmetric function theory.
