Abstract:A series of five-coordinated 2,6-bis(imino)pyridyl Cu(II) complexes, [2,6-(ArN=CMe)(2)C(5)H(3)N-CuCl(2)center dot nCH(3)CN] (Ar = 4-MeC(6)H(4), n = 0.5, Cu1; Ar = 2,6-Et(2)C(6)H(3), n = 1, Cu2; Ar = 2,4,6-Me(3)C(6)H(2), n = 1, Cu3; Ar = 2,6-Me(2)C(6)H(3), n = 0, Cu4; Ar = 2-MeC(6)H(4), n = 1, Cu5), were synthesized in acetonitrile by reactions of the corresponding bis(imino)pyridine ligands with CuCl(2)center dot 2H(2)O, respectively. The structures of five complexes were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In all complexes, the metal center is tridentately chelated by ligand and further coordinated by two chlorine atoms, resulting in distorted trigonal-bipyramidal geometry for Cu1, Cu3, Cu4, and Cu5, respectively, and approximately square-pyramidal geometry for Cu2. At 298 K in dichloromethane solution, all complexes exhibit blue-green luminescent emissions at about 478-499 nm, which could be attributed to ligand-centered pi* -> pi transitions. However, fluorescent emission of complexes Cu1-Cu5 is significantly weaker than those of ligands, which could be attributed to fluorophore-quencher interactions via paramagnetic Cu(II) center. Abstract:A new coordination compound, [(CuI)(Btd)](n) (1, Btd = 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole), was obtained at room temperature by the reaction of 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole with CuI and KI saturated aqueous solution. It was characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis and photoluminescence. The complex crystallizes in the triclinic Pi space group, with a = 4.1620(6), b = 10.4590(15), c = 10.5052(15) angstrom, alpha = 69.310(2), beta = 83.608(2), gamma = 78.873(2)degrees, V = 419.30(10) angstrom(3), Z = 2, C6H4N2SCuI, M-r = 326.61, D-c = 2.587 g/cm(3), F(000) = 304 and mu(MoK alpha) = 6.464 mm(-1). The final R = 0.0418 and wR = 0.0936 for 1451 observed reflections with I > 2 sigma(I) and R = 0.0422 and wR = 0.0939 for all data. In the complex, the Cu atoms are coordinated by one nitrogen atom and three iodine atoms to form a double-stranded stair, and such stairs are further linked to build a 2D framework via C-H center dot center dot center dot I interactions.

Abstract:Six heteroleptic cuprous complexes, [(LCu)-Cu-1(PPh3)(2)](BF4) (1a), [(LCu)-Cu-1(DPEphos)](BF4) (1b), [(LCu)-Cu-2(PPh3)(2)](BF4) (2a), [(LCu)-Cu-2-(DPEphos)](BF4) (2b), [(LCu)-Cu-3(PPh3)(2)](BF4) (3a), and [L3Cu-(DPEphos)](BF4) (3b) = )L-1 = diphenyl(2-pyridyl)phosphane oxide, L-2 = diphenyl(8-quinolyl)phosphane oxide, (L)3 = diphenyl(2-pyridylmethyl)phosphane oxide, DPEphos = bis[2-(diphenylphosphanyl)phenyl] ether), were prepared and fully characterized. The electronic absorption spectra and quantum chemical calculations indicate that the lowest excited states of these complexes can be assigned to the metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) transition. In poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) films, these complexes exhibit blue-green to orange emissions with long lifetimes ranging from 7.5 to 28.6 mu s. With wide energy-band gaps of 3.50 and 3.28 eV, complexes 3a and 3b emit efficiently in 20 wt.-% PMMA films with photoluminescence quantum efficiencies of 0.69 and 0.72, and emission maxima at 477 nm and 495 nm, respectively. Electroluminescent devices were fabricated with these N,O-based Cu-I complexes as emitters. The best device performance, with a peak current efficiency of 4.9 cd/A, was obtained for 3b.
Synthesis, Characterization and Luminescence Properties of A Copper(I) Complex

Abstract:Binuclear complex [Cu2 (mu-I)2 (phen)2] x CH3CN(1)(phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) was synthesized under solvothermal conditions and characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectrum, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that complex 1 is monoclinic, space group P2(1/n), and the cell parameters are: alpha = 10.505 A, b = 23.628 A, c = 10. 676 A, alpha = 90, beta = 91.40 degrees and gamma = 90 degrees. The authors have studied the luminescence property of 1, Complex 1 has blue-purple luminescence in solutions of DMSO with emission bands at 369, 380 and 460sh nm; and has red luminescence in the solid state at room temperature with a broad emission band at 650-678 nm. These all can be attributed to the pi* --> pi transition based on the ligand. In the solid state, the emission frequencies for complex 1 are red-shifted about 280 nm compared with their emission maximum peaks in solutions of DMSO. This red-shift of emission energy from solution to solid is likely to be caused by the intermolecular pi--pi packing interaction in the solid state which effectively decreases the energy gap. The fluorescence decay curve of complex 1 indicated that the processes of decay consists of two components, whose corresponding lifetimes are tau1 = 1.36 micros and tau2 = 5.98 micros, corresponding factors are 50.21% and 49.79% in DMSO solutions, and tau1 = 1.42 micros, tau2 = 8.85 micros, corresponding factors are 51.15% and 48.85% in the solid state.

Abstract:Four novel Cu(I) complexes, [Cu(o-PYO)(PPh3)(2)]BF4 (1), [Cu(o-PYO)(DPEphos)]BF4 (2), [Cu-2(o-PYO)(PPh3)(3)(CH3CN)](BF4)(2) (3) and [Cu-2(o-PYO)(DPEphos)2](BF4)(2) (4) (o-PYO = 2,5-bis(pyridy1)-1,3,4-oxadiazole, PPh3 = triphenylphosphine, DPEphos = bis(2-(diphenylphosphanyl)phenyl)ether), have been synthesized and characterized by H-1 NMR, elemental analysis and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The central cuprous ions in all complexes are surrounded by N and P atoms to form a distorted tetrahedral geometry, although one of the cuprous ions in complex 3 is coordinated by a PPh3 and an acetonitrile molecule due to the steric hindrance and weak coordination ability from monodentate PPh3 ligand. The UV-vis absorption spectra in CH2Cl2 show the characteristic metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) absorption bands in the region of 360-480 nm. Four Cu(I) complexes exhibit yellow to orange-red phosphorescence with the emission maximum at 572, 577, 562 and 597 nm, respectively in the solid state.

Abstract:Three metal-organic complexes Cd(HBIDC)(phen)(2)center dot 4H(2)O (1), [Cd(BIC)(Phen)](n) (2) and {[Eu(HBIDC)(H2BIDC)(H2O)]center dot H2O}(n) H2O) 1 (3) (H3BIDC=benzimidazole-5,6-dicarboxylic acid, H2BIC=benzimidazole-6-carboxylic acid, phen=1,10-phenanthroline) have been synthesized under hydro(solvo)thermal conditions and structurally characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectrum, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. With similar reaction conditions, reactions of the same ligand with different metal cations selected from different blocks (d-block and f-block) result in different coordination modes of carboxylate groups and final frameworks of complexes 1 and 3. The decarboxylation was observed in complex 2 and resulted in the formation of BIC2- ligand. Complexes 1-3 have intense fluorescent emissions at room temperature in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) solution and in the solid-state, which indicate they are potential fluorescence materials. Abstract:Reaction of cuprous bromide with equimolar amounts of 1,2-bis(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-ylmethyl)-benzene (dpb) affords a mononuclear three-coordinated complex [CuBr(dpb)] (F2) with dpb acting as a chelating ligand. In contrast, using cuprous iodide instead under the same conditions gives the polymeric compound [Cu2I2(dpb)]n (F1) which contains double-bridging iodine atoms. The complexes were characterized by element analysis and 1H NMR spectroscopy, and the crystal structures were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods. The Cu(I) complexes are luminescent in the solid state at ambient temperature. Intense orange emission for complex F1 is observed, with maxima at 593nm, probably ascribed to a combination of a halide-to-metal charge transfer and copper-centered d→s, p transitions. F2 exhibits a blue photoluminescence, with emission maximum at 515nm, assigned to metal-to-ligand charge-transfer excited states, probably mixed with some halide-to-ligand characters.
A Series of Dinuclear Cuprous Iodide Complexes Chelated with 1,2-Bis(diphenylphosphino) Benzene Derivatives: Structural, Photophysical and Thermal Properties

Abstract:Three new bisphosphine ligands, 4-phenyl-1,2-bis.diphenylphosphino) benzene (Ph-dppb), 4-pyrrolyl-1,2bis(diphenylphosphino) benzene (Pr-dppb), and 4,5-dimethoxyl-1,2-bis.diphenylphosphino) benzene (OMe-dppb), were synthesized to coordinate with cuprous iodide (CuI), and compared with 1,2bis(diphenylphosphino) benzene (dppb). Single crystal X-ray diffraction and elemental analysis experiments indicate that three binuclear CuI complexes with formulae of [Cu(mu(2)-I)Ph-dppb](2), [Cu(mu(2)-I)Pr-dppb](2), and [Cu(mu(2)-I)OMe-dppb](2) were obtained, which are the same as the reference complex [Cu(mu(2)-I)dppb](2). The three complexes showed a maximum emission band (lambda(max)) in the range of 484-535 nm which varies in the electron effect of the substituted groups (i.e. methoxy, pyrrolyl, phenyl) on [Cu(mu(2)-I)dppb](2), and in high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) from 53 to 90% in the solid state. Furthermore, the complexes [Cu(mu(2)-I)Ph-dppb](2) and [Cu(mu(2)-I)Pr-dppb](2) exhibited a thermal decomposition temperature exceeding 380 degrees C. The high PLQY and excellent thermal stability of these CuI complexes imply their great potential application as efficient emitters in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs).

Abstract:The 1 : 2 M-ratio reaction between cuprous bromide and pyrazole derivatives in toluene results in mononuclear Cu(I) complexes [CuBr(pyrazole)(2)]. The complexes have been characterized by H-1 NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. The molecular structure, established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, features a trigonal planar geometry around copper, with monodentate pyrazole derivatives. All the Cu(I) complexes are luminescent in the solid state at ambient temperature. Intense blue or blue-green emission in the solid state is observed for these complexes, with the maxima ranging from 431 to 493 nm. The observed photoluminescence could be ascribed to the metal-to-ligand charge-transfer excited states, probably mixed with some halide-to-ligand character. The microsecond lifetime scale of the complexes implies that these transitions arise from the triplet excited states.[GRAPHICS].

Abstract:Herein two novel ionic cuprous complexes [Cu(POP)(Pytzb)]BF 4 ( Cu1 , POP = bis(2-diphenylphosphinophenyl)ether, Pytzb = 2-(1-(benzyl)-1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)pyridine) and [Cu(Xantphos)(Pytzb)]BF 4 ( Cu2 , Xantphos = 4,5-bis(diphenylphosphino)-9,9-dimethylxanthene) have been synthesized in reasonable yields, and their crystal structure, UV absorption and photoluminescent properties, as well as electrochemical behaviors were investigated. At 300 K, both Cu1 and Cu2 in solid state exhibit outstanding green luminescence peaked at 533 and 526 nm, respectively, with significantly high photoluminescent quantum yields (PLQYs, 47.5 and 60.5%, respectively). Detailed exploration of emission decay times for Cu1 and Cu2 in dependence of temperature demonstrates that the two complexes are typical thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials at ambient temperature with TADF proportions of 83 and 80%, respectively. The two complexes were employed as dopants in solution-processed electroluminescent devices.

Abstract:Three dinuclear Cu(I) complexes, [Cu2(pnd)(PPh3)4](BF4)2 (1), [Cu2(pnd)(dppp)2] (BF4)2 (2), and [Cu2(pnd)(DPEphos)2](BF4)2 (3) (PPh3 = triphenylphosphine, dppp = 1, 3-bis (diphenylphosphino)propane, DPEphos = bis(2-diphenylphosphinophenyl)ether, pnd = N, N'-bis (pyridin-2-ylmethylene)naphthyl-1, 5-diimine), have been prepared and characterized by IR, 1H NMR, 31P NMR, 13C NMR, XRD, elemental analysis and X-ray crystal structure analysis. The structural analysis reveals that the flexible pnd in 1-3 acts in a trans bridging coordination mode to connect two Cu+ ions, forming a S-shape conformation, while each of Cu (I) ion is four-coordinate N2P2, adopting a distorted-tetrahedral geometry. DFT calculations show that the HOMOs of complexes 1-3 are primarily located on the copper d-orbital and the phosphine ligand, together with a specific contribution of pnd, while LUMOs are mostly composed of pnd with admixed Cu(I) d-orbital character. Corresponding calculations of atomic charges indicate that the charge of the copper atom in complexes 1-3 is below +1, while the total charges of the coordinated atoms are 0.743-0.786. Moreover, the solid-state emission spectra of complexes 1-3 show the existence of broad emission bands at 350-550 nm.

Abstract:Two P boolean AND N-type ligands, 8-(diphenylphosphino) quinoline (L-1) and 2-[2-(diphenylphosphino) ethyl] pyridine (L-2), and two P boolean AND N boolean AND P-type ligands, 2,6-bis((diphenylphosphino) methyl) pyridine (L-3) and 2,6-bis((di-tert-butylphosphino)methyl) pyridine (L-4), were synthesized to coordinate with copper iodide (CuI). As a result, CuI complexes with rich structures, such as discrete complexes with formulae of [Cu2I2(L-1)(2)] (5), [Cu3I3(L-2)(2)] (6), and [CuI(L-3)] (7), and polymeric complexes with repeating units of [Cu2I2(L4)] (8), and [Cu3I3(L-4)] (9) were synthesized and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Besides the intriguing structures, these complexes showed rich photoluminescent properties, with emission colour that varied from blue to red and a photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) from 1.6 to 29.9% in the solid state. Molecular orbital calculation and experimental study showed that the emissions involve halide to ligand charge transfer (XLCT), metal to ligand charge transfer (MLCT), and/or cluster-centered (CC) excited states.
Atomically Defined Monocarborane Copper(I) Acetylides with Structural and Luminescence Properties Tuned by Ligand Sterics

Abstract:The weakly coordinating cluster [CB11 H12 ]- is used as a versatile building block for the preparation of luminescent copper(I) complexes. Treatment of [CB11 H11 -12-C≡CH]- with CuI and ammonia affords {(CB11 H11 -12-C≡C)2 Cu4 (NH3 )3 }n (2). Addition of selected phosphine and pyridine ligands transforms 2 to a range of homometallic products 3-13. All compounds have been characterized by X-ray crystallography, which reveals a surprising variety of structural complexity featuring cores with two to ten Cu+ centers. In the solid state, products 3-13 exhibit room-temperature phosphorescence across the visible spectrum in colors from blue to deep red. Lifetimes at room temperature are in the microsecond regime, and quantum yields of up to Φ=0.99 are observed.

Abstract:Herein, a series of ionic mononuclear Cu( I ) complexes, [Cu(phen)(bdppmapy)]Cl ( 1a ), [Cu(phen)(bdppmapy)]Br ( 2a ), [Cu(phen)(bdppmapy)]I ( 3a ), [Cu(phen)(bdppmapy)]SCN ( 4a ), [Cu(Dpq)(bdppmapy)]Cl ( 1b ), [Cu(Dpq)(bdppmapy)]Br ( 2b ), [Cu(Dpq)(bdppmapy)]I ( 3b ) and [Cu(Dpq)(bdppmapy)]SCN ( 4b ) {phen = [1,10]phenanthroline; Dpq = pyrazino[2,3- f ][1,10]-phenanthroline; bdppmapy = N , N -bis((diphenylphosphino)methyl)-2-pyridinamine} have been synthesized and characterized by using IR, NMR, elemental analysis, single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, fluorescence spectroscopy methods, and UV-vis and terahertz (THz) time-domain absorption spectroscopy. Their crystal structures were elucidated by X-ray crystallography and their photophysical properties were investigated in detail. All the above complexes exhibit a 1D to 3D supramolecular structure which is linked together by intermolecular weak interaction forces and hydrogen bonds. By regulating ligands and anions, the emission wavelengths of these complexes are quite different in the range from 533 nm to 604 nm. Theoretical calculations and photophysical properties indicate that luminescence is derived from metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) excited states. In the meantime, the results of calculations show that the stabilization of the increased conjugation of the ligand-based π* orbital is ascribed to the observed bathochromic-shift in the MLCT transitions.

Abstract:In this work, we report the synthesis, X-ray crystal structures, and temperature dependence of solid-state photoluminescence properties of two cuprous iodide complexes, namely, [(mpbi)CuI]n (1) and [(bimb)CuI]n (2) (mpbi = 1,1′-(5-methyl-1,3-phenylene)bis (1H-imidazole), bimb = 1,2-bis((imidazole-1-yl)methyl)benzene). The complexes exhibit efficient solid-state emission at room temperature, with peak emission wavelengths at 580 and 650 nm, respectively. Two complexes display outstanding thermal stability. The X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that the structure of 1 is a discrete metallacycle with the copper atom in the structure adopting a less common triangular configuration, while the structure of 2 is a one-dimensional chain structure of Cu2I2 binuclear rhomboid. The temperature dependence of photoluminescence in the wide temperature range is investigated, which demonstrates that the thermal quenching of luminescence of copper complexes can be regulated by cuprophilic interaction.

Two Luminescent Materials of CuI Clusters Based on Mono-phosphine Ligands and Their Fluorescence Sensing Properties

Abstract:Two new binuclear CuI cluster complexes based on mono-phosphine ligands, namely Cu 2 I 2 (p-Tol) 3 P 3 ( 1 ) and Cu 2 I 2 (m-Tol) 3 P 3 ( 2 ) (p-Tol = 4-methylphenyl, m-Tol = 3-methylphenyl), have been synthesized by the mechanochemical reaction of CuI with (p-Tol) 3 P ( 1 ) and (m-Tol) 3 P ( 2 ) in molar ratio 2:3. Two complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, X-ray diffraction and UV–Vis spectroscopic analysis. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction revealed that complexes 1 and 2 are binuclear cluster structures with two kinds of cuprous ions in tri- and tetra-coordination modes. They also show different supramolecular structures and different degrees of Cu‧‧‧Cu interaction. Based on TD-DFT calculation and analysis, the luminescence of these two clusters should be originate from the hybrid [(X + M)LCT] excited states. These two clusters show the sensing response modes of fluorescence enhancement and vapochromic fluorescence (including enhancement), respectively. The fluorescence sensing mechanism should be derived from the coordination reaction of pyridine vapor to tri-coordinated Cu of the clusters.

Neutral Copper(i) Phosphorescent Complexes from Their Ionic Counterparts with 2-(2'-quinolyl)benzimidazole and Phosphine Mixed Ligands.

Abstract:Neutral mononuclear Cu(I) complexes and their counterparts with counterion, i.e. Cu(qbm)(PPh(3))(2), Cu(qbm)(DPEphos), [Cu(Hqbm)(PPh(3))(2)](BF(4)) and [Cu(Hqbm)(DPEphos)](BF(4)), where Hqbm = 2-(2'-quinolyl)benzimidazole, DPEphos = bis[2-(diphenylphosphino)phenyl]ether, have been synthesized and characterized by X-ray structure analyses. All of the four complexes in solid state exhibit a strong phosphorescence band in the orange spectral region at room temperature. The photophysical properties of these complexes in both methylene chloride solution and poly(methyl methacrylate) film have been studied. Compared to the related cationic complexes, the neutral ones show blue-shifted emissions and longer lifetimes that can be attributed to the additional ligand-centered π-π* transition beside traditional metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT). By doping these complexes in N-(4-(carbazol-9-yl)phenyl)-3,6-bis(carbazol-9-yl) carbazole (TCCz), multilayer organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) were fabricated with the device structure of ITO/PEDOT/TCCz: Cu(I) (10 wt%)/BCP/Alq(3)/LiF/Al. The neutral complex Cu(qbm)(DPEphos) exhibits a higher current efficiency, up to 8.87 cd A(-1), than that (5.58 cd A(-1)) of its counterpart [Cu(Hqbm)(DPEphos)](BF(4)).
Non-bridging Oxygen Dependent Redox and Spectroscopic Properties of Cu Species in Phosphosilicate Glasses

Abstract:We reported a series of phosphosilicate glasses containing different Cu species (Cu-0, Cu+ and Cu2+). With X-ray diffraction (XRD), Transmission electron telescope (TEM), and absorption spectra (UV-Vis), Cu0 NPs and Cu+ were identified in the glasses with low Cu concentrations (0.02; 0.04; 0.1 mol%), and Cu+ and Cu2+ were identified in the glasses with high Cu concentrations (0.2; 0.4; 0.6 mol%). Raman spectra gave a clue that the quantity of non-bridged oxygens were related with the oxidation of Cu+ -> Cu2+ at high Cu concentration. With photoluminescence spectra(PL) and time resolved decay spectra, different Cu+ sites were discovered with octahedral coordination predominantly with different tetragonal distortions, and ETs from Cu+ to Cu2+ were also revealed with proposed mechanisms. The study in understanding the structural effect of Cu-doped glass on luminescence would be an important step towards the rational design of transition metal doped luminescent glasses for various applications. Abstract:Two new complexes [Cu-3(I)(L1)I-3] (1, L1 = 2,5-bis(4-pyridyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole) and [Cu-3(I)(L2)12], (2, L2 = 2,5-bis(4-pyridyl)-1,2,4-triazolate) are controllably formed by using aqueous ammonia to regulate the pH value of the reaction involving CuI and L1. Interestingly, L2 of 2 is in situ generated from the ring transform of L1 when increase the pH value of the reaction. 1 exhibits 2-D layer, while 2 shows 3-D MOFs with a novel 3-nodal 4,4,5-connected net topology of an unprecedented Point (Schlafli) symbol: (4.5(2).6(2).7)(5(4).8(2))(4(3).5.6(6)). Although both 1 and 2 are built of CuI and similar ligands, different arrangements of CuI chains and ligands endow them with different physical properties. 1 displays a strong pure red luminescence emission, while 2 is nonluminescent and shows a broad absorption band covering the whole UV-vis-NIR spectrum range. The emissive excited states of 1 and the charge transitions of the optical absorption for 2 are solved by DFT calculations.

Abstract:AbstractAs a kind of photoluminescent material, CuI complexes have many advantages such as adjustable emission, variable structures, and low cost, attracting attention in many fields. In this work, two novel two‐coordinate CuI‐N‐heterocyclic carbene complexes were synthesized, and they exhibit unique dual emission properties, fluorescence and phosphorescence. The crystal structure, packing mode, and photophysical properties under different conditions were systematically studied, proving the emissive mechanism to be the locally excited state of the carbazole group. Based on this mechanism, ultralong room‐temperature phosphorescence (RTP) with a lifetime of 140 ms is achieved by selective deuteration of the carbazole group. These results deepen the understanding of the luminescence mechanism and design strategy for two‐coordinate CuI complexes, and prove their potential in applications as ultralong RTP materials.
